What is MSX?
MSX adds visible light details to thermal images.
FLIR MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) adds visible light details to thermal images in real time for greater clarity, embedding edge and outline detail onto thermal readings. Unlike image fusing (merging of a visible light and thermal image), MSX does not dilute the thermal image or decrease thermal transparency.
Thermal imagers with MSX capabilities actually have two cameras—a thermal imager and a visible light camera (i.e. a typical digital camera). Every time you take a picture, both a thermal image and a visible image are captured simultaneously. Built-in software extracts key visible image elements—outlines, words, numbers, and other high-contrast edge details–and adds them to the thermal image. This helps give the image definition and makes it easier to tell what you’re looking at.

Prodotto robusto, connesso in rete con app cloud.
I’ve only had it for about a week but so far the FLIR C5 mostly meets my expectations, except for one bug and some secondary annoyances. Obviously I can’t state anything about lifetime performance and stability other than that the casing seems to be solid and well constructed.
I’m an IR enthusiast (as a hobby) and an engineer and consider myself reasonably knowledgeable in thermal imaging. I knew not to expect a full HD thermal image experience but I must say despite the limited 160×120 thermal resolution the combination with the MSX optical ‘edge’ overlay makes for good images during daytime. The MSX overlay can be adjusted for distance to best line up the thermal and optical image. This seems to work well. It would be a bonus if this adjustment would have been real-time and automatic but alas it is manual only, At nighttime you lose the MSX feature because it needs ambient light, so at night at you are limited to somewhat fuzzy thermal-only images unless you observe an object up close or turn on the built in flashlight (for nearby observations) to bring the MSX back to life.
As I mentioned, the casing is sturdy, robust and easy to hold. The ‘take picture’ button feels a bit clumsy but works fine. Other than that most of the controls are accessed via the touch screen. The menus are mostly well constructed and self-explanatory. Only the manual temperature range adjust could have been more user friendly in my opinion. A quick wipe-down menu is also available to quickly turn on/off the flashlight and wifi/bluetooth.
There are quite a few ‘horror’ reviews regarding all sorts of observed problems with this imager and lacking support from FLIR. I did encounter one myself that someone else also mentioned: after not using the camera for a while it has a tendency upon startup to boot with a frozen white image and practically unresponsive behavior. The only option then is to power it down again, wait 10 seconds and power back up. That seems to work in my case so far. After contacting FLIR they directed me back to Amazon who quickly approved my return request and sent me a free shipping order. After a couple weeks I got my money back and ended up buying a replacement which works fine.
A couple annoyances are worth mentioning as well: the camera has wifi as well as bluetooth for linking to a network or a mobile phone but I haven’t gotten that working yet. At the minimum it is not self evident how to do that but pairing bluetooth with a phone seems to take forever and once it does I cannot do anything with it. Pairing to the flir cloud storage via wifi requires an account at flir but even with that the camera continuously finds ‘no server’. On the other hand, some people mention it is impossible to get images off the C5 to a PC – forcing to do this via a flir account etc – but I had no issues with that whatsoever (with Windows 11). No account, just connect the USB cable to my PC and I can readily download all images. As long as this works I don’t care about the wireless connections.
Also, the camera pauses quite regularly for a couple seconds of ‘calibration’ whenever you significantly change the scene you are looking at. So smooth streaming is not guaranteed.
As an alternative I looked at the flir pro one insert to a mobile phone but I rejected that option due to the fact the functionality completely depends on a working app on your phone. As soon as the app or device is no longer supported you can throw away your thermal imager. Hence my choice for a standalone handheld.
In summary, with informed expectations regarding the image quality to expect I was positively surprised. Daytime the images are good with MSX overlay and serve my purposes. Nighttime the absence of MSX indeed results in low-res imaging; you cannot use this imager to safely maneuver around in the dark with objects around. Although the camera provides near real-time motion imagery I think it is meant mostly for taking thermal still images for inspection purposes etc. For that it suits the purpose very well.
With a few disclaimers I would recommend this camera to fellow enthusiasts.
Pros:
Seems like a pretty good build quality for taking onto jobsites, a lot of useful accessories are included. Screen is big enough to see what you are looking at, but it would be even better if there was something like an HDMI port for larger screens to be an option.
Cons:
This was the first thermal camera I’ve ever operated but I had higher expectations for the technology. I found the chromograph (color graph indicating temperature range) difficult to reference, it was always different, and the time it took to calibrate is something you want to anticipate ahead of time, otherwise you might miss the shot you want to take. I would have also liked the software to give me more options for exploring the heatmap data.
Thoughts:
I should have done much more research before choosing a thermal camera. Consider checking their website for their OEM articles and options for building custom solutions, if you do not see reviews for normal products. There’s a chance you can build the product you want/need rather than settling for the consumer grade options.
Nothing to dislike about this product I use it to see where heat accumulating In a server room
Easy to use and set-up, albeit long winded. Used it around the house to find dilapidated electric chargers, bad electric transformers, subsequently removed. Checked central heating and boiler flow and returns with aim of lowering temperature. Used it to find cold bridges in external walls, floors, and ceilings. Great tool for any household as you can find your self where the problems are before calling in the professionals. Cool tool for checking the composter.
Bought from the warehouse for a community energy cooperative for us to help people identify poor insulation in their homes. Despite being from the warehouse, this still had its screen protector in place, indeed it looked like new, although the USB lead was missing. We’re still learning but it looks really promising.
I bought the Flir c3x and the seekshot pro to review and help decide which was best. I chose the seekshot pro and i will explain why.
I have attached images of the seek shot pro and flir c3x so you can compare the quality.
Choose flir c3x, if:
– only used inside buildings
– close ranges
– home inspections
– easy reports
– fast and clean UI and UX
– better feeling product
– better app
Choose seek shot pro, if:
– longer distances
– outside
– higher resolution needed
– patience to practice using precision mode
– accept ugly images
– using for animals
– navigating at night
– night vision
– hunting
– bad UI and UX
– unresponsive screen that doesn’t always react
I found the c3x with MSX created a better result than the seek shot pro for home inspections. It has better automatic sensitivity to identify issues. The seek had to be set manually on occasion to see the same issues.
But outside, looking for animals, night vision and longer ranges the seek shot pro outperforms massively!!
I use for both home inspections and security so seek was a better choice for me and i was willing to work with the terrible touch screen, grainy images and poor app for that resolution for my purposes.
Best way to think of this is flir is apple iphone and seek is samsung android. Samsung has better hardware whilst apple uses lower spec hardware but gets more out of it, less issues, responsive and its friendlier to use.
Also seek is noisy it clicks every few seconds as it calibrates , flir just says it on the screen.
We are using it in our village to survey houses for heat loss. It is extremely easy to use and gives results that are simple and intuitive to understand. Brilliant camera!
I had the flir c2 that I bought a few years back and I must say, the flir c5 is better, not a major upgrade but you do see a difference in clarity. Maybe I should have bought the c3x to save a few dollars…
The recalibration every 30 seconds or so is annoying. Bit expensive for the homeowner that will only use it for an initial project and then maybe friends and family after that.
You have to spend some time getting used to this camera and how to understand and interpret the results. Particularly read up on the emissivity settings and pay attention to the distance you hold the camera from the object as this makes a difference and you have to match the settings accordingly.
We don’t use it with the FLIR cloud service, but it’s possible to just copy the pictures off it directly.
It’s reasonably battery hungry but not excessively so. Lasts long enough for our jobs – a couple of hours?
There’s no way to turn off the “FLIR” embedded logo it puts on every picture and this sometimes gets in the way, so you have to position the camera accordingly. Imagine if you got an iPhone and all your pictures had a little Apple logo in the bottom right corner that can’t be switched off… whatever. FLIR seem to insist on advertising on your pictures, even though this device is not exactly cheap!
Headline says it all. If you want better images spend more money. This unit provides what is needed to know for the most part. Learn how to understand the information it provides. Lots of videos online.
IR + normal photo at the same time is a great feature. I did not manage to setup the WiFi, requires FLIR cloud and giving all rights to your pictures to FLIR. I do not like this. Using USB cable instead, which is in fact better for me, also from security point of view. Camera is great.
Would love to be a sponsor lol
Over all great tool
Size like a phone fits in your pocket
In my photo you can see the engine I scanned
Has two missing cylinder
Would like to try other products from FLIR
Thanks FLIR
Quick delivery. It has an audible alarm that I can’t hear due to my hearing loss. It would be better if the LED screen was back lit and had a hold feature for the moisture reading. Good enough of a product for my needs.
perfect camera to begin with and get used to the IR world. The image is not as clear as a 320×240 camera, but it’s getting the job done till I decide on the next camera……EASY to set up and use in the field
I haven’t given it a whole lot of use, but at the time of purchase, I picked it up for about 450 (I think it was on amazon day).
It is quite easy to use, and it’s definitely helpful in finding minor issues when doing domestic surveys. It’s useful for spotting where the damp is occurring, rising damp and cold spots in a room. I’m sure there are many other occasions that this could be useful.
It is certainly not the best, but at its price, for its very pocketable size and for smaller servicing, it certainly serves its purpose.
Compact design, there is no onboard storage so any pictures have to be transferred via the app which is a pain in the backside to be fair. Overall though it is a great camera.

Bought this to use for hunting down cold bridging in typical new build housing and seriously put off the mobile phone attachment models. The C5 is very compact and very easy to use. It’s increased cost over the lower models is well worth the money to get 180×120 thermal detection. Battery charges fairly quickly and lasts hours. Comes wit ha good quality belt holster style carry case that is plenty tough enough for typical usage cases. The device itself has a rugged rubber shell. Screen is large and clear but as with all Thermal cameras, don’t expect to just be really proficient at using it for a while unless you are already trained in their use. Also they are incredible for finding damp that is not visible to the eye.
Works awesome I’m able to see through the drywall to see studs as well as water.
Para obtener buenos resultados, paciencia.
Es un producto de calidad.
Great product! Beats the hell out of the Chinese knockoff. Plus it’s got a 2m drop protectio
Extremely useful camera, found to have many uses. I use it to show up heat anomalies on electronic printed circuit boards, i.e. difference in temperature between adjacent RAM chips. Also used for investigating sources of heat loss around walls and doorways in my house. Very convenient feature of camera is that it always takes 2 photos (one infra-red, the other conventional photo so you get a handle on what it was you are seeing in infra-red. Very sensitive. Very compact and portable. Holds battery charge well. Wish I had bought one years ago!!!!!!!
You get what you pay for.. perfect for a home inspection business.
Prefer it over my e8 & e4.
Pros:
Compact, tripod connector, MSX software, USB-C charging, 2 yr warranty on unit, 10 years warranty on sensor.
Cons:
160×120 IR sensor, must have a steady hand when taking images.
Overall, it’s ok, although I think a bit sluggish and pricey, as you can get 320×160 sensors for approx 20% cheaper (but warranty or CS is v bad apparently).
Wifi acquisition takes ages, hence to boot the thing – Only turn it on when you need to upload, otherwise it’ll spend the first 10/15 seconds waiting to acquire a wifi signal – wasted time where you can’t actually use the device.
To change the ‘spot light’ function, you need to swipe down from the top of the screen to activate it.
To change the brightness, you also need to swipe down and set it from there.
To access the images, you can’t simply connect it to a laptop, you must ‘upload’ it to the ignite.flir.com website where it will save images for you.
You get approx 1G of upload data to save.
Saving is easy, and you can select/create folders as you need, and also annotate the images as you take them.
Image is of back on one of my racks at home.
Not for the homeowner and NOT for detecting wildlife. You will see a SPOT only that will be white. It’s for closer and larger use. Windows and doors. Roofs, leaks.
For the home owner get FLIR one.
For wildlife use the one advertised for wildlife. My Shepard is a dot at 100 fee
I strongly recommend this product – I use it for PCB board development, electrical engineering and occasional tracing of in wall power junction location and hot water pipes. It is quite easy to get started with this camera, of course for best results a little bit of reading on IR reflection index will help a lot. You can run the camera pretty much out of the box. The install process (first time your run the camera) is a bit lengthy but that is to be expected.
A note to future owners: as with any precision equipment, if you plan to use this product professionally, I strongly recommend you look up for a firm/company that does metrological checkups – this way they can calibrate your camera – now Flir does this through their vendors and recommend you should do this every 2 years.
The camera itself is very rugged, it is made of a heave rubbery like material and the screen indents in, so if you drop it on the ground it will not break.
NOTE! The first picture is taken of the parking lot in front of my apartment at 11.30 PM (darkness). The mode is pure termal without any edges (it does not overlay the RGB picture and trace edges) – is just what the thermal camera sees. The photo is taken from the 12th floor (way beyond what Flir recommends as a shooting distance) about 50 meters from the parking lot. You can clearly see the cars with the “hot” engines.
I am quite happy with this product! I strongly recommend
Intuitif, simple d’utilisation.
Upgraded to this from the C2 and am very pleased with the extra clarity and features – not least the min and max temp spots. The MSX technology produces images of a clarity one might associate with cameras offering a higher resolution than the modest 160 x 120 provided. The Flir tools software provides the opportunity re-consider on-site choices once back in the office, and enables the manipulation and enhancement of saved images, An affordable must have tool for surveyors and building inspectors.
Love this, fits in my pocket and good enough resolution for the price. I use it multiple times a week as a home inspector. The UI is a clunky but functional.
Easy to use, in device storage. Very good resolution for the $.
Well made, rugged, good performance and the software menus are easy to navigate. Good battery life. Bright clear screen is large, making viewing easy. Drops right into a jacket pocket, easy to carry.
We use it to spot bad chips on power amplifier circuit boards. You can’t see it with the naked eye, but this camera shows the overheated chips glowing brightly on the screen. The boards are diagnosed in minutes instead of hours. For that reason alone it was worth the price.
If you’re new to infrared imaging, don’t expect lots of megapixels, that would cost you a fortune. Instead, if you need more resolution just get closer to the subject. The resolution of this camera is adequate for my application. It has good file-transfer features which I haven’t used yet.
It also has another use that is equally wonderful. If a horse or cow doesn’t come home at night, this camera can quickly spot them a long distance away. Likewise, a quick scan of the pasture confirms all are present and accounted for. It’s better than a flashlight because they stand out among objects that conceal them such as fences, trees and bushes, which appear dark in the infrared image.
Looking for cold spots around the house to upgrade insulation. This camera does the job for the money. Also will show a water leak if you suspect you have water leaking somewhere. I would recommend
Nix.
I’ve used similar thermal imaging cameras and Flir has done an excellent job on this one. A must for the home owner looking to conserve energy or contractor. Easy to use with invaluable data. You can actually see where your insulation is defficient in the summer or cold air entering in winter. I’ve used very expensive units to check heat exchangers that are begining to plug up, electrical components and many more. I don’t use the windows software since the camera can display problem areas. No issues with the C5.
Great info in every shot with both the thermal on top of the visual images. Intuitive interface with options for preferred colors to peak temperature.
Good camera very helpful for located covering supply ducts in new construction and I using for find a/c copper lines behind the walls. Also really good for other things too. Was a fast delivery and I highly recommended
Takes a while to start, and takes a while to refresh. But that’s expected.
Works great and as supposed to. Example here of heat build up in dry wall from water boiler on other side. Currently used for consultation on heat build up for server and network racks/rooms.
