FLIR C5 Compact Thermal Camera

What is MSX?

MSX

MSX adds visible light details to thermal images.

FLIR MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) adds visible light details to thermal images in real time for greater clarity, embedding edge and outline detail onto thermal readings. Unlike image fusing (merging of a visible light and thermal image), MSX does not dilute the thermal image or decrease thermal transparency.

Thermal imagers with MSX capabilities actually have two cameras—a thermal imager and a visible light camera (i.e. a typical digital camera). Every time you take a picture, both a thermal image and a visible image are captured simultaneously. Built-in software extracts key visible image elements—outlines, words, numbers, and other high-contrast edge details–and adds them to the thermal image. This helps give the image definition and makes it easier to tell what you’re looking at.

Purchased used. Appears to be in very good shape. This is apparently a discontinued product. I think my Seek has better imagery but this may be older FLIR technology. Anyway, it is what it is and performs ok.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIt works very well and is pretty good value for money.

My only reservation is that it takes about 2 minutes to ‘warm up’ when you first switch it on. It’s not too big a deal and it warms up much quicker if it’s only been off for a couple of minutes.

I found it’s too easy to accidentally press the power switch when you’re trying to take a photo (the buttons feel the same without looking where your fingers are). This is a pain when you have to wait for it to warm up again on when you switch it on again.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersIt’s hard to fault this thermal camera from a surveyors point of view. It’s light and easy to carry in a pocket, has a great display and simple but effective menu structure. The MSX picture enhancement is excellent and makes this camera stand out from those that don’t have it. It works really well with FLIR tools on a PC and pdf reports are quick and easy to generate. Power is micro USB and battery life is good. FLIR documentation is also superb. On the negative side it can be tricky to press the shutter (but this is a minor inconvenience) and it is also quite expensive – hence 4 stars. It’s great for the identification of cold-bridging and water leaks and is really easy to use. Use a photographic pistol grip on serious surveys – it makes it easy and less awkward to hold the camera up and view the screen over an extended period. Delivery from Poland was superb – they promised a 2 day delivery but in fact it came within 24 hours!

Every function you get on one of the bulky FLIR handle cameras is on this one, plus report building capability. It’s small, compact and has far more crisp detail in the photos (color, b&w, InfraRed) than any other product I’ve seen under $20,000. Why carry an elephant across the desert when you could carry a mouse?

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA really useful product. It has help me detect leaks where there’s no evidence of one. Build quality is ok, although it feels somewhat cheap, purely due to its light weight (compared to your average smartphone).

The software is necessary, but a pain. I’ve had to reinstall it after it wouldn’t open. Then I ran into an issue with the license.

Non-thermal imaging is poor. You’re better off taking a picture with your phone.

This is a very inexpensive IR camera that is well made. I have had a few issues where it lost sync between the two sensors (visible and infrared), but a reboot of the camera resolved it. Very easy to use, but note it is not a high resolution IR camera. I also bought the E8 for $3K and the more expensive camera has dramatically better resolution. This is a good camera to get started with, but I like the E8 for serious thermodynamic analysis. Not that the resolution is not good enough for small electronics.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI really liked this Flir C2, it is mostly like using a camera.
    Pluses:
Easy to use as these things go…
Software add huge value, allowing photo/heat image overlay, and temp readings, and report writing.
    Portable.
Video mode. handy when looking around for problems.

    Cons:
You need to know what your doing, there are some tutorials you can watch. Not a problem for Pros, I guess.
The sensor is not high resolution, 160 by 80 or somesuch. So the infra red picture lacks detail.

The recalibration happens frequently, about every couple of seconds, which can be very inconvenient since everything freezes. I believe that is a thing with IR cameras, but I’m guessing they get better as they cost more.

Accuracy. The measurements I took for temperature were miles out. Probably related to the distance setting, which could not be changed (on my particular set, I think this was a fault). So fine at 1 metre, but the picture I supply here, at about 4 metres was inaccurate, since the ambient temperature was around 10 degrees.
Finally, the usb plug in the rubberised case was very, very difficult to insert. Again, it might have been faulty, this was a amazon warehouse “refurb” for a very good price, but I had to return it for these reasons.

Not easy to use for amateur, maybe not quite good enough for Pro.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWe use this camera to find shorts and heat sources on pcbs. This camera works very well. The only thing I wish was better is the overlap between the camera image and the thermal image. For these close-up tests I switch the camera image off and only leave the thermal image on because the mismatch of the two images is too large and can be misleading to the location of a heat source.

Unit is simple and easy to use. Well worth the money. You can tell if cloth towels have been used, if a seat has been recently sat in, and even if someone has drank something recently by looking at their lips. The dual picture mode is awesome! I ghost hunt with it and would like a larger megapixel for that purpose; Not enough experience to say that it is valuable for that either. I was also hoping to use it for locating nocturnal animals, but everything is equivalent to a ‘whiteout’ type condition from residual heat; That’s just the way thermal works unfortunately.

I love this little camera. I am a construction management professional that likes to keep a bag of diagnostic tools with me when I’m in the field. This unit helped me source a water leak emanating from a commode 15 feet away from the visible water damage. I have been able to isolate the location of water penetration through a single ply roofing membrane which is usually very difficult to do. My only minor complaint is the low resolution of images. That, is a very small complaint considering the thousands of dollars that I have saved my clients with this tool so far, though.

Good high end quality product used mainly in a home renovation project for detecting hot spots in electrical wiring, and cold spots due to insulation deficiencies.
In my work environment I have seen the benefits to identify electrical hot spots early as these can cause more energy consumption and also a potential risk to start a fire. The unit itself seems to be working quite well and have revealed a few problem areas already that requires attention.
Looked at other less expensive options where a camera unit plugs into an iPhone, but were not convinced that the iPhone option will continue to work as good in the long run vs. this compact thermal camera unit due to the fact that manufacturers of iPhone’s tend to change the connectors over time and older accessories cannot be used on these newer devices.

Purchased this camera to inspect heat leaking out of hot tubs. Works as advertised, although you have to be patient when pointing the camera at a surface. It sometimes takes a few seconds to adjust to the surroundings. Overall, for the price, this is an excellent thermal imaging camera. Downloading images is easy, even without using their software. Just connect the camera to a usb port on your computer and locate the images folder on the camera. Then it’s just drag and drop pictures onto your computer. I’ve even tested it by placing my hand on a warm surface for 1 second, and then looking at it with the camera. You can clearly see the heat print from my palm and finger prints.

It does as it says on the tin….. though took a while to get the software running following a web download, once running simple to work out with a little playing, I didn’t need to read the manual of x 100 pages to get going, they could do with a quick instruction guide and a tips list and save a huge trawl

I work in IT environments and this defiantly provides quickly the missing link in understand how heat needs to be managed/channeled correctly to allow adjustment and therefore providing a faster more efficient solution to cooling devices. Especially to those who have no concept of why something needs to be done but need to fund the change to then make a saving,”its always been done that way” type conversation can be very frustrating day in day out, a picture speaks a 1000 words as they say…
No doubt the same could be said in any work place where this product provides benefit/understanding by being able to see what you are talking abou

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought the C2 as a creative tool, something I know it wasn’t designed for but I thought might have potential to make interesting pictures based on my product research. I have been more than pleasantly surprised with my purchase.

First things first, as cameras go, the C2 has little to no resolution when compared with any other digital camera on the market today. The visible spectrum capture is a whopping 346×462 pixels (I’ve not been able to capture at the spec’d 640×480), and the thermal/IR capture is 80×60 pixels. The Mac OS software was last updated in 2014 and while it gets the job done it could use some more development time to add stability, features and little improvements like remembering the folder path you choose to use instead of constantly defaulting to the one it wants to use instead, and the creative part of me would really really love more palette choices…but I digress.

The camera is easy to use, just point and shoot. The provided lanyard is helpful for wearing it around your neck and giving enough slack where you can move the camera around quite a bit without having to take it off, handy for me when I’m also carrying DSLRs. Battery life isn’t great, about 90-120 minutes from a full charge to flat, I wouldn’t recommend a power down/power up in between shots to conserve battery life unless you have some extra time because it takes around 45 seconds to fully boot. I find the touchscreen menus are constantly being selected without me touching the screen, I wish I could lock them as I’ve accidentally changed settings several times. And from a usage standpoint, don’t get too physically close to your subject or you can “pollute” your shot with your own body heat shadow, something that didn’t occur to me until it happened.

So yes the C2 is far from perfect on a lot of points. And yet…there’s something uniquely cool (no pun intended) about the results when you take the thermal image and overlay the detail from the visible spectrum and play a little with the software as far as the palettes and thermal range go. This is probably not everyone’s cup of tea and it’s not exactly inexpensive for what it is and there are all kinds of limitations as I’ve noted. But I’m very happy I got one all the same!

An interesting creative tool even if it wasn't designed with that in mind

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersFor the price you can’t beat it, I’ve already noticed when they redid my walls after having a branch come through my roof two years ago that there is a big section of wall that backs up to the attic that has no insulation and the temperature difference is about 20F so now I can already start using this to save money once I get up there and add insulation.

I love the build of this as it is rugged, just wish they did have a cover for the sensor so you don’t accidentally touch it, I’d feel much more comfortable keeping this in my jacket pocket. Unfortunately I purchased this a month before the new C3 came out (with Wifi, video, and picture-in-picture capability). Once the C3 came out Amazon dropped their price on this another $50, I reached out Amazon to see if they could do a price match as they used to but unfortunately they took that feature away in mid 2016.

The quality is good, not the best, but much better than that that I’ve used in the past with multi thousand dollar units. The technology has come a long ways and is still growing. The images are much better quality than those of the SEEK or other cheaper thermal units.

Though there is one that attaches to a phone and uses that camera that is over a grand but the sensor on that is much bigger, so you can capture more intricate details and also change lenses so you can do wide angle or telephoto. This FLIR is only wide angle – which works great but if you’re wanting greater detail from further away you won’t be able to achieve this without getting closer to the object.

Software – FLIR’s software on this is top notch, I’m very impressed just what I can do in it and even change the thermal range and colors. You can even set it up to only show colors above or below a certain range.

Customer Service – I reached out almost immediately as it seemed the sensor was somewhat off, such as if I was to look at my hand you could see an obvious offset between the picture and the thermal image (as they use both and overlap). This is great at distances of over 4′ with being accurate but I’m planning on using it with wiring inside electrical panels of boats. Generally it is a rats nest in there and I don’t want to see a hot wire and mistake it as the wrong one as the image would be shifted off. Anyway the customer service guy was top notch and able to answer my questions and concerns. He is still currently waiting on me to send him some more photos at which I’ve been lazy about. He even sent me a whole document on learning about emissivitiy and how to set it to what it should be (I’ve always been used to keeping this at 1 but I wanted to know why and when it should be set, this doc helped me)

Overall I’m impressed and loving it, I’m also hoping to use it in my boat as I have a leak in my teak deck and need to find out where is saturated, I know you can use thermal imaging to find water saturated material but I’m not sure how well this unit will do that. So far I like this and would even love to someday get one with different lenses and bigger sensor, but for now I’m happy.

Oh, distance wise, I can’t detect too far, such as over 100′ and I’m not getting objects I’d assume to be hot outside, this isn’t a problem just an observation. This is more of a home inspection camera and is what I’m going to use it as when I do house hunting.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersSicuramente molto utile.

I do wish the camera had a higher resolution, and that it had the option of removing text and numbers from the jpegs without having to crop off afterwards in imaging software.

It does the job. You can’t get too reliant on the color spectrum as it adjusts for the temperature range detected. But the temperature range is shown, as well as the temperature of the crosshairs point. This is just what I was looking for.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersReally great. I like it better than the Flir one. No fumbling around, plugging in the extender piece, then the module to my phone. Just pull it out and turn it on. The one feature I do miss is the hot spot/cold spot option in the palette options. I hope Flir comes out with that as a downloadable update to the color palettes. Smooth transaction in every way otherwise.

Our company uses it for inspections of equipment control panels, detecting problematic hotspots in advance. As an example of the resolution, if you press your hand against a wall for 5 sec, the camera clearly picks up the ‘heat-print’ left behind.

Golden Review Award: 181 From Our UsersSo I’ve been using this for a weekend now, and I gotta say, I’m thoroughly impressed—what a great and useful piece of technology for many different uses! Let’s get into all the aspects, “The Good, The Bad & The Returnable (spoiler.. there isn’t one for returnable)

// Packaging & “In the Box” Items — “The Good”
I won’t bore you with details, the short and sweet version is that the box is really nice, professionally laid out & designed, and very “gift-able”. Inside you get everything you need and more. The device itself, wrist strap, charging USB cable (forgot to include in my photo), multiple international power supply plugs, manual and some additional marketing + registration material.

// Quality of the Device—“The Good”
Right off the bat, you realize the construction is rock solid—fully wrapped in a soft rubber protective shell, keeping it safe from any accidental drops. The screen also has a flexible plastic feel to it, so unlike the glass your phones are equipped with, this will take a good beating before shattering. I’m very happy with its build quality, no issues or worries, however I don’t think it’s water/dust proof, so just keep that in mind before getting carried away with how you handle it. It’s an expensive technology, so like your phone, be cautious. That being said, it is built to be used in rougher environments, so don’t be overly worried about dirty fingers.

    // Features & User Experience—“The Good”
Finally the good part. Using it is a joy, it boots up relatively quickly (10-15 sec), sometimes taking a little longer to calibrate which it does frequently during use. The screen is plenty bright by default, but does have 3 settings (low, med, high). The screen is very responsive, but like your touch phones, you will need special “touch” gloves or your bare fingers in order to respond to your interactions. It’s got multiple viewing color modes, plus MSX technology which helps you see what your looking at through the devices screen. Basically it draws lines around objects to help discern object details—it’s a very useful option that most will have enabled at all times. It’s got a flash you can turn on/off, or even use as a flashlight. The battery lasts for a while, I’d probably recharge it every 3 days of regular and constant usage. One of my favorite features is the double photos that it takes. So after each photo, it instantly takes 2 pictures, one of the thermal view, and one of a regular photo so you can see exactly what your looking at (see attached photo). There’s also a lot of device settings and parameters that can be tweaked, things like: Emissivity, Reflected Temperatures, Distances, Language, Time, Units, Brightness, Screen Orientation, Power settings, and few more.

One of my other favorite features which I stumbled across accidentally, was the ability of locking the temperature range/color scheme. When your pointing the FLIR at any particular area, theres a temperature range for whatever scene your looking at, and the colors are spread out across that range. For example (see attached photos), my kitchen had a temperature range of 175 – 71.8, the oven was recently on so it was 175 and the coolest areas on the floor were 71.8. The color for the hottest area is 175 and shows as white. In my next photo of my TV, the range is 93.3 to 73.4, with the highest temperature of 93.3 also displaying as white. Both different “high temps”, but both showing as white. The lock feature, simply locks the color to temperature association, and applies it to every scene you look at as long as that lock is in place. This way you can compare 80 degrees, to 80 degrees, scene from scene. It’s all a bit confusing, but basically allows the hot temps to really come through and stay consistent as you walk around your location. All you have to do to enable this, is tap on the temperature range, either the top or bottom numbers and you’ll see a small lock appear. Tap it again, and it disables it—simple, and brilliant. I also like this because I find the FLIR calibrates less often. One last thing I wanted to point out, is the large action button on the top. There’s only two buttons on the device, a power button, and a “Take Photo” action button. This action button is oversized, which really makes it easy to take a snapshot—a small detail, but was well thought through.

    // Usages—“The Good”
I don’t work in construction, and I’m not a handyman in the traditional sense, so for me, I’m not as interested in finding cold or hot spots around the house, or electrical problems, etc. I actually have other practical uses for this FLIR C2. Believe it or not—it’s privacy. Let me explain, this is a thermal imager that picks up any thermal signatures—well any device that’s got electricity flowing through it will be giving off a heat signature. Some more then others, but nearly all will. My wife and I do a fair amount of traveling, most of those travels require staying at either hotels or airbnb type locations. This camera is an amazing tool for bug sweeps. If there’s a camera hidden in a teddy bear, this thing will pick up that warm battery immediately. Unplug any electronics that you don’t need, let them cool down, then walk through the area with this camera. You will find head signatures anywhere, even through thin dividers! So if there’s heat coming from places that shouldn’t have anything there, investigate. Even things like fans that aren’t even running give off heat and are clearly visible on this device. So if your the type that sleeps outside the comforts of your own home, this might be a good investment for you.

Another thing I use this for is power saving. Unpluging all sorts of devices we had no idea were running hot even when not on, like the fan, but also things like lamps, gaming systems, even electronic wine openers.. all of it is adding to your energy bill, even though it’s at such a small amount, every bit could help.

The other interesting thing I discovered, was that my TV was much hotter in one of its corners. It ran 14 degrees hotter then any other place (see photo attached). So if your making a large purchase, and want to make sure there’s nothing strange or wrong with your product, this might be a good way to determine that too. I still haven’t looked into the whole TV issue, and I’m not sure there’s anything I can do about it, but I will be testing some settings to see if I can turn down some dynamic lighting or something.

One last thing to note, this is obvious, but might you might not realize it right away—this will not function through a window. So if your inside your home/apt, and trying to pick up heat signatures outside, it will obviously not work.

    // Overview—“The Good”
Anyway, I really really like this device, I think it’s a wonderful product, that’s capable of doing a lot of very handy tricks. It’s built very well, a lot of great features and customization options are included. I would highly recommend this portable unit to anyone looking for a solution to several scenarios.

Love it! Lots of great uses—privacy being one of them! Great build, nice weight, sturdy. Highly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought this to figure out whether my house had insulation and found it so helpful.

It showed me at a glance exactly where I was missing insulation in the attic. The overlay made it so useful, because I could show the worker going up there exactly where to go and I could monitor whether he was doing a good job, without going up there myself.

Same for the walls. I have heard of workers who have cheated people out of insulation, but that wouldn’t happen with one of these as proof.
It made it easier to know what would be needed and to budget for it without surprises.

Golden Review Award: 29 From Our UsersAlthough I only rated this camera with 4 stars it is worth all 5 stars, I will explain in a moment.

This is my first thermal camera and I have to say it has been a lot of fun! I got this because I had a outlet in my house that only had LED christmas lights plugged in started to overheat and melt. I freaked out and didn’t leave the house without turning the power off at the breaker box. That started to get extremely annoying so I opted to get this camera to check EVERYTHING with electricity in my house. I succesfully checked everything and all was good. Well except I found that there were a LOT of places around the house that the insulation was absent allowing heat to enter causing excessive strain on my AC unit. Fixed those things and my electricity bill was a good $50 less than previous months and years. This in itself made the price well worth it.

Now since this is a Flir, once you register the camera on their site they offer a TON of training materials and even a program to allow me to create very professional reports in the event I decide to use this for a side job. I cannot reiterate enough the amount of useful stuff they will provide to you.

Now for the reason for only 4 stars. This camera has no type of cap to protect the glass over the censor. Now don’t get me wrong they did design a rubber bumper around the lens to keep from easily damaging the lens but that will not protect it from dust scratching the lens. I ALWAYS sit this with the censor face down due to the rubber bumper they did add to the front (picture). It seems it wouldn’t have been too difficult to create a cap to wedge onto this rubber bumper to protect from dust.

Overall I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my purchase and the camera’s features are the same ones found in the MUCH more expensive models. You’re not missing too much by buying the cheapest thermal camera they offer. Well done Flir!!

Best decision I made! Don't need a multi thousand $ thermal camera.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOne of the coolest products I own. This winter I found a lot of cold spots in my walls and was able to fix the leaks without trying to guess where the problems spots were. One of the surprising things I found was that some of the GFCI outlets in my house were hotter than others, even when nothing was plugged in. I replace those and they now are the same temp as the walls.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersThis is a very good tool and amazingly sensitive as you’re able to see the smallest change in temperature such as a handprint after leaving it on the surface of something for as little as two seconds. It’s very handy having the thermographic image and the standard image, but there are two reasons why I haven’t given it five stars. The first is I think that the standard image should be of a higher definition The second is I believe that the lens should have some kind of protection when the camera is not being used.

I also put a space heater outside under a cover to keep my plants from freezing. I was relieved to know that it didn’t get too hot anywhere. It’s a bummer when you burn the house down! 🙂

I was wondering if the resolution was enough. With the edge overlay and center temp reading it’s fine for a home owners use.
