We play this as a family. After dinner, or on a Sunday whilst it’s cooking. It makes a change to game old school and not in the digital world. It encourages communication and teamwork and it’s our game of choice for family time. You can also play it in a power cut by candle.

Lots of figurines to paint and play. Big and heavy game, but with simple rules. No room to overthink how spells or combat work. Just little bit disappointed that box not include bosses. It would be really nice if they had at least paper token representation on the board. Really like an option to play with a companion app. Could not expect much more for 66 quid.

This game is great. I bought it for me and my kids to play and they caught on pretty quick despite being waay under the suggested age. There is an app to take over the role of the game master so the whole family can play (as players).
The board and minis (there’s loads of minis) are very high quality and well worth the investment. In full transparency, I luckily caught this on a flash sale and it was 50% off. I’ve found the price to be the biggest problem but even at full price its well worth it.

This is a great RPG board game for all ages that is relatively easy to learn and you can even play it solo if you download the companion app.

he game plays as great as ever, and the coop-app is a neat feature – but you barely need the tabletop game for playing with the app as everything happens in the app as well.

Played this when I was young, so nice to share with nephews who loved it. Loving the new packing and trays to store figures in is a brilliant idea. Packaged really well so no damage during transit, and arrived quickly, so much sooner than expected that delivery driver left on my doorstep while I was at work so was worried it wouldn’t be there when I got home, luckily a neighbour took it in until I got back – would like to know why it says handed to resident on tracking when I wasn’t even there!! And certainly wasn’t handed to anyone just left.

I played with this with my brothers and sisters who are in the early teens, but just couldn’t get into it. I love the concept but playing as the “dungeon Master” I didn’t really get to do much. Also the younger ones got very bored in between turns and couldn’t stay engaged for the whole time. Sessions can run quite long.

Brilliant game, family and friends played it, certainly helps having a DM, guide and dictate when the rules are a tad vague but now I don’t get to play it cause I’m perpetually Dming the families games.

My favourite board-game finally got a new edition, & it was well overdue.

This edition has solid furniture, nicer card-stock, & tidy storage trays.

The phone app lets you play solo, or with a group of 4 all playing as heroes if you feel compelled, though the traditional “Quest Master” role can be played for 2-5 player games.

Quality control is not great though, so check your models for defects, & request replacements if required.

There are also expansions available, & a great community of enthusiasts of HeroQuest online.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFirstly, the game itself is fantastic if you are into D&D type gaming. The standard quests are interesting. Especially if the DM likes to add a bit extra as part the experience. My kids 7 and 8 love this game. We’ve played it at least 2 hours a day since Xmas. It’s really captured their imagination and they’ve already made their own quests and love to explore and build up their players. If you are playing for first time miss out the first quest (the trial). It’s too long and difficult.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis re-release uses the old U.S rules.
    I am in the UK.
I approve this change as the monsters carry a much larger presence and threat level now.
The rules still have some glaring gaps which will have to be house ruled, such as searching for traps/secret doors on coridors that are really long and seems mad that they can check the enture thing, veteran HQ players will know what I mean.

Also, unarmed fighting rule doesnt exsist in core set but exsists in an expansion and that is where I think its abit naughty, as one of the quests has you unarmed.

On a positive note, the use of plastic instead of cardboard furniture is great for durability.

The nostalgia is strong with this purchase and long may it continue

What a great product. I had the original game 30+ years ago and this is better due to the pre assembled plastic furniture etc. very well made. Worth the money.

Had the original ” Hero Quest “, but some where in the mists of time either sold it, but definitely miss placed it.
So when this latest release came up, reduced in the Black Sales had to buy it.
Box is bigger than original and no silly card board doors.
Models are very clean and when my oldest boy saw them he’s looking forward to introducing them to his kids.
Just got to arrange a time to get playing now.

Used to play this when I was a kid and was thrilled when I saw it was available again. With the price dropping slightly I bought it to introduce my 8 year old to the world of HeroQuest. Previous reviews about packaging & quality have obviously been taken onboard as mine was incredibly well packaged, all pieces secure, really impressed! Gameplay is as good as I remember and my son picked it up quickly. Hopefully many more hours of fun to be had!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought this for myself and family to have a varied experience game to play and was pleasantly surprised. Betrayal has given us many nights of joy with its fun and hugely unique situations. The way you discover and build the mansion together makes every game feel different and exciting, plus the many haunts that can occur always make playing it again that extraordinary thrill. Highly recommended

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFirstly, this is a great throw back to my childhood and great fun to play. I was dubious about purchasing due to previous bad reviews about the quality. I think they may have changed their manufacture and/or packaging because I haven’t noticed any of the issues with the pieces and figures not sitting flat etc, jammed in the packaging etc. It is expensive, but is great fun and I have no regrets purchasing. 90s nostalgia!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI had the original as a kid and lost it sometime as an adult to my dismay. But to my complete surprise and joy they made this newer version which holds dear to the original but with some nice new touches. The figures are well detailed and so very paintable, the pieces of furniture and doors are now fully plastic so will last longer than the original part cardboard versions. The game rules are pretty easy to pick up even for younger members of the family. Apart from the improvements in aesthetics the game is as i remember it and have had many a happy hour with family and friends playing it since purchase.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAmazing game and so much fun! If you like H P Lovecraft or Mansions of Madness, then you’ll love this. If you’re not familiar with either, but like horror mystery, narrative exploration etc, you will have a great time. One thing I do appreciate about this over MoM is that it’s NOT dependent on an app to play the game and there’s not much set up compared to similar games.

I had this game originally as a child, this re-release is fantastic and brought back so many good memories.

Yes some of the figures are slightly different and not made from the same material, but this is due to them no longer being made from games workshop.

The box is impressive and easy to store everything in.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersOrdered this as soon as it was available for preorder!!
Absolutely love the betrayal series, and this is definitely better then previous seasons of the game.

The characters are ALOT more sturdier then previous and have their own slots in the box. They’re made with a harder plastic- similar to warhammer models, rather then the previous type which was easily bent and damaged. With rubber coloured bases that appear to be removable, not sure why but I like it!

There’s new elements to trigger a haunt and the separate counters are in separate shapes to easily identify what is what, which saves time hunting for specific counters of a haunt.

Character cards have a trait hole to help move the counter up and down which I feel helps not damage the cards as much through sliding them up or down.

All in all, brilliant game, and brilliant changes. I look forward to expansions in the future!

Bought this as I had it when I was a kid. Ministures ok, but will need a bit of repair as the plastic tray holder in the box they sit in has cause some of them to be bent. But good starting point for kids and dungeons crawlers.

  31. Adam Learoyd says:

     United Kingdom

Only one negative to this some of the figures arrived bent in the packet I’ll need to straighten them.
This is likely due to their housing being a little too snug for the figures, bending them when inserted softer foam style casing would be better for this.

Loved this game in the day, and the reincarnation lives up to it. Had great fun playing through it. Still one of the best in the dungeon crawler category.
The only major complaint I would say is that it is worth getting the ‘feldherr’ foam sheets for the model inserts, as the plastic ones that come with it are impractical.
The only minor complaint, the quality of the plastic models isn’t fantastic, some of them are slightly warped. But I can let that slide.

If you were born in the early to mid 80s its likely you or one of your friends either owned or wanted HeroQuest! Well now it’s back and better than ever- the miniatures are more detailed and the furniture is all plastic and no longer cardboard and if you’re a.man child in your late 30s like me and have no one to play with then theirs a free companion app that plays the role of Zargon aka the bad guy aka the dungeon master. Complete with sound effects and and the wise wizard Mentor.reading out the story of each quest etc
so you can play by yourself, or force the kids to put down their devices and play with you. If you’ve never played HeroQuest then here’s a brief summary for you, players choose one of 4 warriors, a Barbarian, Elf, Dwarf and a Wizard. Each has different strengths and weaknesses. You work as team to conquer a quest. One player plays as Zargon the dungeon master and controls the board and placements of monsters and objects (or you can use the app). The game comes with a quest book, each quest is different and has a goal to achieve. Heroes enter the dungeon and at first the board is empty, but as they move around and explore the dungeon the dungeon master unveils doors and monsters etc. Rooms only reveal what’s inside them when players open the doors and this leads to lots of excitement is their skeleton warriors, zombies, orcs or something worse like a dread knight or dread sorcerer, theirs also traps and treasure to find! All the quests are different and act as chapters in an overall story to defeat the Witch Lord, the heroes spend gold between quests to buy new weapons, spells etc essentially leveling up! This is board gaming at its absolute best level, if you have kids they’ll love it, mine enjoyed working as a team to complete the first quest! Once you’ve completed the quests in the main game theirs expansions (sold separately).

Theirs a few die hard board gaming enthusiasts complaining about quality, now I’m not saying they’re wrong but it depends how picky you are. The miniatures (playing peices) some have bent weapons and the odd one may have a wobbly stand – but even as a complete novice to these kind of games I’ve discovered it’s quite common and also easily fixed, simply dip them in hot water, bend it back into shape then dip in ice water, really not a deal breaker at all.

For all the 80s kids out there HeroQuest is back!

Absolutely chuffed to bits with my copy of hero quest, arrived on time, was in mint condition, really well boxed too, an filled to the brim with styrofoam pieces, so wasn’t damaged at all, the figurines/pieces of furniture, cards, all really top quality, one could argue, quite easily, that this is better quality than the original, seems to me they put a lot of effort into this relaunch, an the artwork, care, you can see the effort thats been put into this, they really have done this game justice, only been waiting 20 odd years for this 😉 as missed the crowd funded limited edition way back when. Sure the price is a little steep but it’s 100% worth it, just look around an see how much the original was going for, if you could find it at all. Well done Hasbro an red rock, solid job! Thankyou 🙂

Played the kriginal version of this and still have it, but got this updated version. The models are awesome. A few had warped parts but easilly sorted by immersing in near boiling water, softening the plastic to make it mallable, then bending back in place and then immersing in iced water to keep in place. Rules are easy to follow and follow more the US version of the game. Game is simple to play. The trays for models and furniture are nice but getting pieces out from some of their compartments can be cumbersome. Only downside is the price. Personally think 60-70 would have been more acceptable. Looking forwards to the forthcoming expansions sets too.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersVery easy fix that i dont think anyone has mentioned here on how to fix any warped minitures:

    1. Boil some water.
    2. Put the Boiling water in a pan or heatproof container, with a bowl of Cold water next to it.
    3. get the warped minis and dunk them into the boiling water.
    4. Theyll either Correct themselves when you put them in the hot water, or if its the base that is warped, you just need to carefully take it from the hot water container, flatten it/correct the warping, and put it into the cold water to re set the plastic.

this method works INCREDIBLY with the plastic they have used for this, and i managed to sort all the warping out within about 15 mins using this method.

This is basically the same game from the late 80’s, it was a Britsh made game and more popular in the UK than Dungeons & Dragons.
Great nostalgia trip but some of the game pieces (mainly the heroes and monsters) are a little cheap, the furniture is a solid resin plastic and of good quality though.

Overall very good, just the price is a little steep, especially as Hasbro needed crowd funding for this re-release for some reason. However I expect if kept in good condition this game could potentially be an investment as availability is already becoming an issue!

I remember having this game back in the 90’s and what an amazing game it is but sadly as much as I would love to have it again, I’m afraid to say what you get with this differs very little to the original so the price point is way over priced especially when you compare it to other dungeon crawl games out there on the market, where you get so much more for half the price of what you would pay for hero quest.

So, there’s been a tremendous amount of complaining about the quality of this game. I’ve owned the original version and I’m afraid I must admit the quality of the original was superior. However, I don’t think the level of vitriol directed at this game is justified. I also own more recent dungeon crawlers like 2nd edition Descent and the D&D boxed games and I would say that the quality of the mini’s is about the same. These are not meant to be super detailed mini’s for a collector like you would get with a table top battle game – they are playing pieces for a board game. Looked at in those terms they really are pretty good. Yes, the packaging solution is terrible, and yes one or two of my mini’s had a bent mace but unless your very particular and are looking for issues you probably won’t even notice. This game includes a lot of expensive to produce mini’s and also furniture, cards, dice etc and compared to other dungeon crawler games I don’t think it’s bad value for money. The main problem, If I can come back to it, is the packaging system. It’s terrible. And if you can free your mini’s without damaging them the packaging may not survive and should probably be binned. I’ve had to invest a considerable sum of money in a third party storage solution to keep it all nice and this seems a bit rich for a game that already cost quite a bit. Still, it’s Heroquest innit?? Gotta be worth it!

  45. Anonymous says:

Arrived in good condition, which was a miracle since the only protection in the packaging box was a 6 inch long piece of packing paper. A few of the miniatures were slightly out of shape, but easily reset with a dunk in hot water. Probably less issues overall than the majority of games with miniatures, and nothing unexpected. Game itself is the same as the original, except everything is a step up quality wise. The miniatures are bigger and more detailed. The scenary and furniture items are proper models, rather than cardboard on standees. Highly recommended, just be prepared to spend sometime straightening the odd miniature with hot water or a hairdryer.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our Users“Heed well my words for I will tell you of times past, of darker days, days when the realm was saved against all hope. For I fear the darkness is about to return….”

And it did, in 2022 courtesy of Avalon Hill’s re-release of the classic game “Heroquest”!

Heroquest is a fantasy adventure set deep within a hidden stone labyrinth. This maze of underground rooms and corridors is controlled by Zargon and the evil sorcerer’s forces of dread. Your four valiant heroes have been summoned to do battle with this ancient evil and must descend into a trecherous world of the unknown, restore honour to the realm, and destroy the forces of dread!

Heroquest is a game for 2-5 players set across a total of 14 quests, with each quest taking approximately one hour to complete and increasing in difficulty as the game progresses. during a quest your heroes may acquire valuable treasures that can be spent between quests to purchase new weapons, armour, potions, and equipment to assist you with the missions ahead. This is a co-operative game. The aim is not individual success and you will have to work together to defeat the evil sorcerer Zargon and his minions. divided you will fall!

    This game contains the following:

    – Gameboard
    – 31 monster miniatures
    – 4 hero miniatures
    -15 pieces of furniture
    – 21 dungeon doors
    – 93 game cards
    – 4 turn order cards
    – cardboard tiles representing hidden doors/traps etc
    – quest book
    – 4 character cards )Barbarian, Elf, Wizard, Dwarf)
    – game masters screen
    – pad of character sheets
    – 6 white combat dice
    – 2 red movement dice

For those who have played the game before the sequence of play and rules haven’t changed. For those who are new to heroquest, the rules are relatively simple to pick up and understand.

One player must take the role of Zargon and effectively act as the dungeon master (DM), whilst the remaining players each take a character each. If there are less than five players then it is acceptable for a player to control more than one character as the game is optimised for all of the characters to be used in each mission.

Each character has several important attributes:

    – Attack dice. The number of dice the character roles when attacking monsters
    – Defense dice. The number of dice rolled when defending attacks.
    – Body points. Reflecting a characters physical constitution and ability to withstand harm.
    – Mind points. Reflecting a characters wisdom, intelligence, and resistance to magical influence.

Characters also start with an item of weaponry each, where as the Wizard may choose three of the four elemental spell decks with the fourth going to the Elf.

On any given turn the heroes start. Each hero can move by rolling the two red movement dice (D6) and moving upto the total amount rolled. Each hero can then take one action, such as searching a room for treasures, searching a corridor for traps or hidden doors, attacking a monster, or using a spell.

Combat is resolved by the hero rolling their specified number of attack dice, with each skull rolled representing a hit. The monster attacked then responds by rolling their specified number of defense dice, with each shield rolled representing an attack deflected or blocked. For every hit that doesn’t get deflected your hero scores one point of damage to the monster, which in most cases will kill them although some monsters have several body points and may require several successful hits to kill them.

When searching for treasure there are several possible outcomes. In some locations you may discover special artifacts (as dictated by the quest book). If there are no special items then you must select a card from the treasure deck of cards – but beware – whilst this may reward you with a discovery of gold or valuable trinkets, a full 50% of the cards reveal traps that may harm your hero or wandering monsters who will immediately attack you.

Once each hero has completed their moves and actions, it’s Zargons turn.

Zargon controls every monster revealed on the game board at that given time. Like heroes, monsters may move (although their move is a defined amount rather than 2D6) and make an attack, although some monsters can also cast spells. Monsters do not search rooms, open or close doors, and cannot pass through hero characters.

Quests are won by meeting the specific criteria stipulated by the quest book. Between quests all of a characters attributes are returned to their starting levels and the hero may also keep any items, artifacts, or treasures obtained during the mission, with acquired wealth being spent in the armoury if you wish in preparation for the next quest.

Despite now being more than 20 years old, Heroquest remains a game that is as easy to play as it is to enjoy. The rules haven’t changed in all of this time because they don’t need to because it’s a timeless formula that works as well today as it did back then.

The new models and furniture are of incredible detail and quality, and no assembly is required allowing you to play the game straight out of the box. Speaking of boxes – this one has all the space you need to safely contain all of the games componants without any of them rattling around loose as was the case with the original version of the game.

In terms of complaints there’s very little to moan about here. The miniatures can be a little fiddly to take out of the plastic blisters that they are contained within in the box, so serious gamers may want to look for a more bespoke storage solution.

Apart from that my only real complaint is that the game requires a minimum of two players – a problem in these times of covid – although there are numerous fan-designed rules for solo play online and also an app available for download that allows solo play.

At 100 the game is also quite expensive (the original was only about 25), and for that price you can purchase pretty much any table top game system you like, many of which are more complex than this is. Lets be honest though, you don’t want to do that – you want to dive back into your childhood and play Heroquest.

    I’ll use my broadsword!!!!

The game that defined your childhood is back and better than ever!
