Pleased with the sander when I used it in my first project. Decent power and nice to handle. Dust bag takes away part of the sand. Really like the way the sand paper is clamped on – that part is well made. The item has fully met my expectations.

When your ancient sander dies in the middle of a project, finding another good one is a big plus. This is quiet, it’s quite easy to attach paper, and it does a lovely job. And it got here fast!

Not as dust free when attached to a Hoover as was hoped everything else about the product especially the paper clamps is quality worth paying extra.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHave only had the 18v random orbital until now. Even though it’s corded this is my new go to for wall and trim prep before painting. Easy enough to handle and large area finishing. By bulk 9 x 11 sheets and cut them in thirds for inexpensive paper. Great tool!

I’ve been buying cheap sanders and throwing them out after a couple of months. The big difference between the cheap junk and the Makita is metal vs plastic. A pleasure to use

Great price, has made sanding my stairs much easier and quicker. Dust bag collects a fair amount of dust, you can use either sandpaper with holes in or buy a roll and make your own too.

Golden Review Award: 56 From Our UsersPurchased primarily for sanding the wood stairs in our house after ripping out carpet. But after this is done, i’m going to do a LOT more with it.

There is glue, dirt, gunk & white paint on the wood surface of the steps.
Using 40 grit sandpaper purchased in the local DIY store here by the meter. I had the machine running roughly 5-6 hours, the only break was to brush off dust & hoover it out so about a minutes break between steps.

I was indecisive between this model, the smaller square plate one (palm sander) or a random orbit. Spoke to a pro carpenter friend of mine who makes boats & knows his job well. He recommended this over the other & i’m so glad i followed his advice.

For me this one unit does the task of a random orbit, a detail sander & a regular orbital (which it is).

Random orbit, i manually go in circles, i see gunk disappearing quicker than normal straight-ish strokes. Not 100% a random orbit but works well for aggressive removal.

Detail sanding…getting into tight corners, i lift the sander up & only point in the tip to the edge, did a decent job for me & took off loads of paint that was only on the edges. Also when lifting the sander up, the traction area is a lot less & you can feel the vibration plate moving fast & well. Once again, not every bit in the corner is off, but 94% or so done.

And of course regular sanding for long surfaces, etc (the entire length of each step).. 1/3 so a good bit of surface area, sure helps the job.

There is vibration of course, think of roller skates, an hour on them & when u take them off you can still feel the vibrations. Not with this unit here, after 6 hours of going at it my hands were not shaky, which did surprise me a bit actually.

The grip is fantastic to hold, if fingers are tired or you need a different posture to hold, you can always move around it. Can use it with one hand or both for leverage.

Dust, yes of course, its a fine dust sander & fine dust gets everywhere. I don’t have a builders hoover to attach in. So, i just used the dust bag itself, kept a broom brush without the handle nearby & a regular vax pet hoover at hand. All doors closed so as to contain the dust as much as i can. Cloth over nose, mouth & hair.
At the end of the 5 hours, yes dust everywhere !! You don’t see it so much when working but at the end of the job yes you do 🙂
But, once again the function of this tool is to slowly & carefully strip out layers of paint, wood, gum, etc. To be efficient in that task, it needs to sand out fine particles & fine particles are difficult to contain. So, personally i can’t complain about the dust, i feel its a part of the process.

Tomorrow i’m at it again, this time with 80 grit. Then a coat of varnish, then maybe a 120 grit light sand & more coats of varnish. Then the kitchen cabinets & then i just want to do more, i’m so enjoying using this tool.

For those who would like to know, yes, like most things in today’s time, it is in fact made in china. But feels strong & durable. I’ve also put a bit of body weight & pressure on it at times to really scrape & the motor handles well without failing or giving out.
And if all that wasn’t just fine, there’s a bonus…if you register on the makita site within 30 days of purchase, you get 3 years warranty.

I could not be more pleased with it all.

Amazon initially showed me 2 weeks delivery time !!! I panicked & tried to cancel the item & order elsewhere, but got a reply that i could not cancel? And the next day it was dispatched & reached me 2 days after. Happy here !!

I use this sander about 6 hours a week nearly every week sometimes more to sand plywood and drywall filler. I have been thru about 9-12 sanders in the past 5 years from the $21 harbor freight to the best Dewalt and this is the best one I have used. The sander isn’t nearly as loud as any of the others yet it works considerably better and actually collects dust in the attached dust collector. After several months heavy use I am still very happy with it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWanted some bang for my buck to replace a 20yr old B&D that vibrated like crazy. My jaws were still clanging after I finished a job. So when the glorious day of failure came I was happy to jump on this “Makita BO3710 Finishing Sander” that I picked up for around 65 bucks in June of ’18. I always do my homework and was glad to see this Makita at a reasonable price. It’s purpose is for home use and what a difference, smooth sanding and no shakes afterwards. You can’t buy sandpaper any cheaper than cutting a full sheet into 3 pieces like the old days. The clamping system works great. I’m using the Norton sandpaper that’s easily found at HD… and thumbs to that as well. It did come with a hole puncher which I never used cause all the work is sanded outside for everyone’s listening pleasure and also to note, no carry bag comes with this item 🙁 Overall this sander is well built and perfect for many jobs. So far very happy with the purchase (5/5) and Amazon’s perfect score of getting orders to my door since 2010!!

I had a vintage Craftsman that started smoking and getting hot. It lived a long life and I chose the Makita. This sander is so quiet and transmits almost no vibration to the hand, and is light enough even this 67 year old retiree can use it with one hand. Love it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI recieved my sander and was right away pleased by what I reaieved. This is not an expensive sander compared to some, but it does offer some quality features for it’s price. On my old sander(another brand) I dreaded changing the sand paper. On the Makita changing paper is a breeze. Also it is quieter than a lot of sanders I have used over the years. No there is no attachment to pipe it in to your shop vac, however my old sander had this and I didn’t use it once in the few years that I had it. I would recommend this sander.

I have had a number of sanders but this one beats them all, it doesn`t shake the life out of you but really gets the job done. The added template for punching holes in the sandpaper for the dust collector is a good add on and the dust collector actually works for a change. It is slightly heavier than the cheapos but the grip is superb and it gets in very close to edges. Not cheap but worth every penny.

The dust-bagger collects quite a bit of the fine sawdust created by the sander. The sander is surprisingly quiet, in comparison to some other finishing sanders I’ve used. Vibration from the machine is minimal as well in comparison to a number of other brands. I’d buy it again if I was in the market for another finishing sander.

Sands very well, fairly quiet and low vibration. However, kicks out a massive mount of dust even using a dust box. Does not come with a vacuum adaptor; which would help a lot. It must be ordered separately but is not clear which it requires.

It may be much better on wood but have only used it on filler so far. It is like I’ll return it as the DeWalt I have puts out no dust at all when a vacuum is connected. It’s a shame because I like the Makita a lot – it’s a good shape, well-balanced, and handles well in one hand.

We used this sander to return our Ipe deck to near new wood condition in order to reseal. It was used continuously for 2 days and never had any problem. Just used it for the first time. The first thing is that the way that you attach the sandpaper to the sander is a much better designed mechanism than a previous Porter Cable sander that I had. This Makita is easy to use with one hand while you hold the material with the other. It is smooth. Too early to give it a 5.

Firstly, to all the other reviewers – THANK YOU! The previous customer reviews really helped in me making the decision to buy this product. This item is really great value for money. It’s solid and truly does a great job with minimum effort or mess! I used it to sand a couple of patches on my solid oak floors and was genuinely delighted with the result. The only observation I would make, however, is that supplying this item with only one sheet of sandpaper isn’t sufficient and you will need more – so buy extra sandpaper sheets at the same time you buy this product. Despite that, this is a terrific purchase – highly recommended!!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersUsual high quality build you’d expect from Makita. Dust extraction needs prepunched sanding paper which can be expensive if it’s a big job. You are able to clamp ordinary sheets but the dust won’t extract as well as with the pre punched type.

Not too heavy, easy and comfortable to handle. Double this up with a small detail sander and you’ve covered off most DIY sanding jobs in my opinion.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this based on other reviews and have several hours of use on it. I used 3 grades of paper on it to finish a maple table I am working on. There is so little vibration while sanding that you can easily read the fine print on the side label. Your hands will thank you.

The paper mount is speedy and requires no “futzing around” to get it lined up. Paper changes would typically only take about 30 seconds. It comes with a “hole punch plate” that pops holes in your paper to allow the dust collector system to work well with standard sandpaper sheets. I found very little dust escaped while doing flat surfaces. Edge sanding of 1″ boards lets more dust into the air, but I expected that.

    Would highly recommend

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersHaving recently upgraded my cordless drill to a Makita and immediately appreciating the higher quality of the product to previous B&D and Bosch drills, this was a deciding factor in my choice of a new sander. Once again, I felt it was worth spending a bit extra on a top quality tool that I would have previously ruled out. This sander is extremely well designed and built. It runs really well without shaking your arm off and some of the small design touches are very pleasing. Should I need another power tool in the future, Makita is the brand I will look at first, as you do tend to get the quality you pay for these days. Highly recommended.

Spent 4 hours sanding some oak chairs, the Makita handled it easily. It’s quiet and vibration free, the paper is a doddle to load up and the hole punch makes life easy getting the holes lined up on any paper. It is definitely worth paying that little bit extra for the superior quality.

I highly recommend this sander to anyone. As a painter, when I am preparing decks, I am running sanders for 2+ hours at a time. This one never stopped working. I also have a Milwaukee sander which I never use thanks to this one. This Makita sander runs quieter, does a much better job, feels nice/comfortable when holding, and does not vibrate in your hands as much. The best thing I love about this sander is that it actually holds onto the paper. Other sanders tended to shift the paper after some use and then it would fall off. I lost so much time fighting with other sanders, that this one saves me both time and money.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI used it to sand the hardwood floors of three large rooms. …Not recommended by professionals, as there are better machines to rent… But I had the time (and unlike a floor sander rental, I get to keep it). This Makita sander works well. The dust bag doesn’t capture everything- so have a vacuum nearby. For the project, I used it for 4 hours at a time, twice a day. It doesn’t vibrate too much and the rubber on the extended handle helps to keep it firm and solid in your hands.

Gets right into the corner and most of the dust ends up in the bag. I’m sure I could rig up a way to fit the hoover onto it too. The plastic plate you get with it means you can use the cheaper sandpaper on a roll and punch your own sheets. The holes allow the dust to be sucked up and into the bag in case you didn’t know. Hope this helps.

  52. Anonymous says:

Easy to replace the sandpaper with the two clips builtin that securely hold the paper whilst using the Sander. The little bag doesn’t exactly contain all the dust so expect to still require a dust mask when in use (only reason it didn’t get 5 stars). Although I’m very pleased with it on a whole and highly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNeeded a sander to help with the edges of my hardwood floors. I was interested in this product because of the dust removal through the pad. I hooked my small shop vac up to it and noticed there was NO dust. It actually vacuumed up dust from the big sander. Like with all my Makita tools I have not experienced any problems. I bought this sander because it has the easy on/off install of replacement sandpaper sheets. This system works great. I use full sheets of sandpaper and cut them to size, so much less expensive then buying pre made sheets. There is a base plate that comes with the sander that you use to punch holes into your self cut sheets of paper so it picks up much of the sanding dust.
I wish the exhaust for the dust was a bit larger diameter but otherwise this a a fine sander.

I really, really love this machine been sanding everything with it. It feels very comfortable in hand, very tight and solid construction, low noise and low vibration. The dust collection works reasonably well considering it’s just a cloth bag. It’s very simple to empty and I actually prefer a zip opening than flimsy plastic containers latches.
The clamps are tight and easy to operate.

Overall a very simple, very effective machine. I would definitely recommend it! Just keep in mind this is the single speed version.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersI am 56 years and have been a serious woodworker for 36 of those years. I have and still own many very good sanders ie.Porter Cable and Milwaukee. This sander at this price ranks at the top. The paper is very easy to change, it has smooth and almost vibration free sanding action, the tool is light but powerful, dust extraction is good, and most convenient is the instant on/off squeeze type trigger no need to wait for the sanding action to stop before setting it down and it also has a lock on button that is easy to activate. I would certainly buy this Makita tool again, and would not hesitate to buy other tools by this manufacturer. Sandpaper !/3 sheets are very economical when cut from 25 foot rolls sold at Canadian Tire for less than $10.00 a roll, yielding 33 sheets in either fine, medium or coarse grits. I was not expecting to be so impressed and delighted with this sander so I decided to write this review. I work almost every day after my regular job repairing and refinishing all kind of furniture as a side business, so I do A LOT of sanding……I have a couple of older 1/2 sheet sanders and they are great for sanding large areas quickly but this smaller sander is almost as good. I was especially relieved to find out how well balanced it feels to use and how little vibration is transmitted to your hands. It is also super quiet. The sandpaper clamping mechanism is perfect and holds any grit securely but not so tight it tears. All in all this is a great sander – it feels solid and well built and is very reasonably priced. I was so happy with it that I am buying another one. No compensation whatsoever for this review was received.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersI didn’t want to pay this much initially, but in the end I did and I’m glad I did. The most impressive things about this sander are the lack of vibration and the low noise. I could have bought a cheaper sander, but in my experience, paying more nearly always guarantees reliability for a long time. Also, the spring-loaded sandpaper attachments are dead easy to use and it comes with a hole punch so you can buy sheets of abrasive paper from anywhere and punch in the dust extraction holes. By the way, I still have a working Makita electric plane that I bought about 40 years ago!

The belts on my 4 x 24 belt sander are always coming apart at the seem. Now, I cut the belts in two and use them on the Makita sander; they work perfect. The Makita sander has the best sandpaper hold downs of any sheet sander on the market which is the weak point of all the sheet sanders. Plus it is quiet and light. The plastic die to cut the holes in the paper needs improving but overall, this is a great sander.

i love this sander! is much better than the other brand I owned before. as I read another review, the dust collection system rates a ZERO. so you can use roll sandpaper and dont have to use the hole puncher plate. but I still give the sander 5 stars! the switch, and lock on device make it easy to use one hand and hold the item you are sanding with the other. works great with small items being sanded. it is light enough to handle easy and heavy enough to do the work, just a great sander.

works well, low vibration, noticed that the dust collection bag puffs dust every time I started the sander. Dust collection port is smaller in diameter than any of the common conection fittings and doesn’t allow connection to my shop vac for even better dust collection. Platten is not perfectly flat with high spots wearing out the sandpaper unevenly. Solved by sanding the platten with sandpaper glued to a piece of “float” glass

Good results, not too londres and Very easy to use. Only downside is when the bag gets full the zip becomes hard to undo.

I got this as a replacement for an old B&D sander of the same size. I couldn’t find any sanders this size at my local stores. The first time I used it the bag kept falling off. It turned out I was not inserting the bag tube far enough into the sander. For some reason I thought that a grommet was a stop, but if you use a little effort, you can get the tube of the bag over the sander far enough that it won’t fall off.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersRips through various tasks, I’ve used this for general diy decoration and refinishing guitars.

I was impressed by the build, the machine feels good, not too heavy, the paper grips have a nice action and hold the paper solid.

The dust extraction is phenomenally good, it’s much better than the black and decker unit I bought this to replace.

Value for money solid sander I’d recommend it.

Amazing how there is almost zero vibration felt as you use this tool. It replaced a very old Black & Decker model that I couldn’t keep my hand on for more than 10-15 seconds or so. The releases are very easy to use and the pad accommodates sandpaper that is pierced for vacuum, but if you don’t buy that, the tool comes with a plastic jig that will punch holes in your normal paper. Nice, soft, flexible power cord. I have used this on a couple of projects so far, and am very pleased with the results.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m an amateur sawdust maker and I’ve built and or refinished dozens of pieces of furniture. Over the years I’ve owned and used a dozen different sanders of the finish, random orbit, and belt varieties. And I’ve tried every brand name under the sun, except uber-expensive names like Festool.
I can say with enthusiasm, that this is the best sander I’ve ever used. It’s smooth, quiet, easy-to-control, and produces excellent results. It’s actually fun to use. Weird statement, right?

As I said, I’ve never owned or used a Festool. But I can’t imagine any of their sanders are better than this Makita, at least not to the degree that you could justify paying $200-$500 instead of $55.

    Love this sander!

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersGreat little sander. I used this to sand back a kitchen worktop with 80 and 120 grain paper, then to sand back a hardwood decking with 60 grain paper. This did the job brilliantly. I was worried that it would be too small but it did a great job.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a good little sander and isn’t too noisy. It comes with a plate that makes the holes in the sand paper for you which is brilliant and I wasn’t expecting. I’ve got a whole house to do so this is going to be a long term friend. The only criticism is the dust collector; it is a bag with a zip in it and the dust just seems to fly everywhere and it has now got a small hole in it. Don’t let this put you off buying it because in my mind, the dust will escape no matter what.

We bought this to control dust on drywall sanding on home projects. No issues so far and it does control dust. It doesn’t come with an adapter for the shopvac – which I think would make it a 5 star purchase. My husband was able to use a washer that came with a bunch of hose washer and put that between the sander and the shop-vac – and that seems to have done the trick! There is also a universal adapter for shopvacs that we bought and didn’t use for this since the hose washer seems to work just as well or better.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThere are many things that I do like about this sander:

+ The handle gives you much more control than a palm sander when you are using it on vertical surfaces or smaller corners. It makes it possible to use just a tip of the pad to touch up small corners.
+ The sanding pad movement is smooth and you won’t feel much viberation on your hand.
+ Paper holder is tight and solid
+ Dust collection is effective while working on a large horizontal surface
+ Uses standard sandpapers (just cut 9 X 11 sheets yourself)

    Some minor issues:
    – The dust bag position is low so it may get into your way while working on tighter places.
    – All the dust vacuum holes are along the edges. It would be more efficient if there are also holes near the centre.
    – Locking button for the trigger is a little bit awkward to use. You can’t push the button while the handle is being gripped tightly against your palm.

This is my first sander so there is no preset baseline in my mind to compare against.

Golden Review Award: 28 From Our UsersI’ve owned numerous cheap orbital sanders and none if them compare to this. Yes it’s more expensive but the old adage you get what you pay for applies. Build quality is superb. It comes with its own dust bag and blows dust in itself, no need to attach a hoover. Also comes with punch plate, which means you can buy 1/3 sanding sheets of your choice, clip them in (very secure clip system!) then press down into punch plate to make the holes, really simple and cheap on sandpaper. Best thing is when you turn it on, quiet but powerful, and the vibration through to your hand is minimal, unlike other sanders which shake your whole arm to hell. Buy it, you won’t regret it.

I really was impressed with the way this sander looked. I have not used it yet but from looking at it this unit looks solidly built. The price was reasonable. I like it and have never used it yet but when I need it , it will be there.Update 2/19/2014. I have used this sander now and it is everything I thought it would be.This is a great buy for a sander you need around the home for your projects.I simply love it.I had no trouble installing the sand paper and the paper held great making my project fun to do.

I didn’t give this a five star rating only because the dust collector material pulled away from the plastic after a short time using the sander. I was able to duct tape it back in place to at least finish the job. Other then that it worked perfect. Lots of power, never bogged or stopped when pressure was applied. The noise level is low although I always recommend hearing protection anyway. The dust collector works good. There is a naturally going to be dust while sanding but it did catch the majority of it even with the duct tape holding the bag on. Would recommend purchasing one if you are not looking to spend a fortune and still get a quality product. Hope they re-design the dust bag.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI use this sander along with a random orbit sander. I find that this one is best on small to medium pieces where I don’t want the edges rounded at all. This really is the right size for my use. It is larger than a palm sander and smaller than a 1/2 sheet, which seems to be more flexible in my projects. I also like being able to use my own sheets and the included punch for dust control. Also, sheets are cheaper than random orbit sander. Installing sheets is simple and straight forward. Wish there was a way to attach my vac, and am still working on that one. Used it yesterday on a craftsman stile mirror I’m building. Used 120, 220, and 320 paper on it, and was pleased by the outcome. By the time I got done with 320, there were no visible marks. Can’t speak on durability as it is not yet a year old.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI like the fact that it can use a regular sheet of sand paper. Just cut a full sheet of sand paper into thirds and it easily and securely attaches to the sander. It has a large work surface which helps keep the work smooth and uniform. This sander is perfect for a large flat area like a table top.
Update: I finally got the opportunity to compare this sander to a 1/4 sheet sander by Craftsman. This sander is much, much better than the Craftsman sander. The Makita actually sands while the craftsman sander just vibrates.
