This is my third Morphy Richards bread maker and it’s better than the others. The collapsing blade means you don’t get such a big hole in the loaf. I tweaked the recipe to get a delicious white/whole meal loaf and it’s now almost perfect every time

Not going to go overboard after two bakes but I can say its very easy to use. Put the ingredients in and walk away for four hours and return to find a loaf of bread. The machine does the work I want it to. The quest to refine the recipe to make the best tasting loaf I can, will take some time but I’m happy I’ve found a machine that will do the mixing and baking for me.

liked the simple to follow instructions, ease of use and the comprehensive recipes. easy to remove the finished loaf and easy to clean. super price for a good quality product, not impressed with the folding paddle idea, as it still sticks in the bottom of the loaf, but no hardship, just remember to remove before cutting the bread. other than that small blip, would recommend.

This is the third or fourth MR bread maker we have had, all the others have been excellent and so far this one will be as well. We only use it for bread so cannot comment on hopw well it performs on the other aspects. They have obviously listened to customers feedback as this machine has been improved such as the end of cooking bleeper now goes on for longer, previously it sound three times then stopped! All in all a good machine.

My experiences I hope may help someone.
I bought a digital probe thermometer for 1.99 which is essential to check flour (I keep it in the fridge) and water is between 20 and 30 centigrade. I also have digital scales.
I make medium size wholemeal using Waitrose Essentials bread flour and about 10% strong white. I have reduced the brown sugar to 1 tablespoon, and increase the yeast by around 25%.
The secret ingredient is vitamin C ascorbic acid, which is widely used in pre baked bread as a flour improver. I crush 1 gram vitamin C and mix it with the flour.
Do not do this with the larger size loaf, it will probably lift the lid.
I bake the medium size loaf on the settings for large loaf.
One loaf lasts me about a week, so I put half in the freezer.
The collapsible paddle is a brilliant feature, it has never stuck in the loaf and causes very little damage.
I prefer breakfast toast to be crunchy, so use a toast rack.
This recipe suits me and shows that little variations can work.
It is an excellent bread maker and very good value.

Looks a lovely bread maker and a great price for such a good product. I tried it and all was good and was easy to use. Basic controls and came with a book with recipes which is great, but wish the book was prined in A5 so that I could pack it away in the machine once it had been cleaned and rerady to put away.

This is the 3rd bread maker I’ve owned, all have produced lovely bread, the smell is better than any alarm clock! This has been the simp!est (and cheapest) model I’ve owned. It lacks the frills of adding dried fruit/nuts etc automatically but it turns out a decent freshly baked loaf, just in time for breakfast if you use the timer. I’ve tried a few of the recipes from the cook book that comes with it, my personal favourites, the basis white (a decent all round loaf) and the French white, fabulous with warm Camembert and chilli jam.

Overall a good bread maker but seriously let down by the claim to have a gluten free option. The only two recipes given in the literature that comes with the machine are not for standard gluten free bread. Scour the internet and it is hard to find a gluten free bread recipe that will work in this machine. So in a nutshell do not buy if you want to make gluten free bread. Great for all other types of bread though.

There is nothing complex about this, you just put your mix in, chose your setting and long press the touch sensitive start button. There is a gluten free setting also. What more can I say about a bread maker.

I initially made a loaf from scratch and wasn’t really happy with the result but I put that down to not having the exact measuring tools. I then purchased several different bread mixes the first loaf I used the bread mix setting and wasn’t happy with the loaf produced. The next mix I used setting 1 and used the medium crust and I got a lovely loaf. I would recommend that you use a little trial and error to find the best settings for the loaf that you like bes

This product has lots of great reviews and also a number of very negative ones. They should be tempered with caution: for example, unless there is some judicious mixing of the water and flour before adding the yeast, the little paddle that does the mixing just goes round and round in the liquid and never mixes the dough! Ensure that the mixing paddle is UP and in contact with some lightly mixed liquid and flour before adding the yeast and setting the machine and you will get a lovely loaf. Nowhere in the instruction book is this mentioned! And just in case you think my comment related to a ‘one-off’ situation, we tried following the instructions EXACTLY for three types of bread and flours: all programmes had to be stopped after 10 minutes futile mixing, slightly hand mixed, the paddle stood upright, reprogrammed and started again, with good results.
However, after using the machine for a number of months and trying several recipes the following works best for us for a medium sized loaf: 270ml lukewarm water, 1.5 teaspoons salt, 1.5 tablespoons sugar, 23gms salted butter, 450 gms strong white flour (a mix of 300/150gms strong white/strong wholewheat flour works very well too) and last into the mixing unit 5 gms dried yeast. Return the mixing unit to the bead maker and use programme 1.
We also have found that supermarket branded flour works just as well as name brands and cost half as much!
We have a fresh loaf every day with 5 minutes preparation time.
The Morphy Richards 502001 is a great way to make bread!

This is a compact and easy to use bread(cake)maker that produces consistent and tasty results. It took a bit of practice to get our wholemeal bread just right and found that using the small loaf quantities with the large loaf settings have the best results. Not really experimented with any of the other programmes but for what we wanted it is perfect and at a great price too with almost a third off the normal price.

Thanks to Amazon, who replaced the original faulty machine within a couple of days – great service.
This machine makes a lovely loaf of bread, well risen and with good texture. I’ve tried a number of the settings and all work well. I don’t have digital scales, as recommended and have had no problems. All flours are different, so I don’t see how accuracy to a single gram is of any benefit. I use less sugar and salt compared to the recipes, again with no issues and good resulting flavour. The paddle just needs to be held in place when adding the flour – I use one of my measuring spoons. The bread always comes out of the pan with no effort. The crust settings don’t give a really crusty loaf and I always use the top setting. Not a big issue, but I would like a crustier loaf from time to time.
Yesterday I tried yoghurt for the first time and it is delicious, with a good consistency.
I would recommend this bread maker.

So far so good, I’ve only use it four times and I only had a slight problem with one and I dont think at all that it is a problem with the machine, I’m sure it was the bread mix I had bought. It was a wheatflour which is heavier than normal white bread flour used in a standard white bread mix as it’s more of a struggle for it to rise. Although it did rise ok, not quite as much as the white ones, the top of the bread was very lumpy and rough, a bit like a piece of course rock. All other bakings have been perfect, extremely good, perfect shape, perfect taste and perfect crusty top. The only thing I was concerned about was that at the end of the cycle the bread pan itself had come loose, so I phoned Morphy Richards and they assured me this will happen as the motor reverses just before the actual bake so the paddle will fold down, it’s then so much easier to remove from the bread at the end. I must say it appears to be a really good bread maker and with my experiences of it so far, I would personally reccomend it as it’s the easiest and most compact bread maker I’ve had so far………this is my third.

My first bread maker which I’ve had just over a week and very pleased with. I haven’t had a bad loaf yet, each bake is getting better as now familiar with the machine and little tweaks to the recipe to suit taste. As with any bread maker you have to be exact with the measurements and the order of adding ingredients – the instructions are very detailed and clear.

I’ve had a couple of older models of Morphy Richards bread makers which have gone each to the great oven in the sky after many years use. The last one died just before Christmas 2020, when there was a dearth of such products available anywhere, presumably due to the latest lockdown, and I finally managed to buy this in early January.

This has similar programmes to my previous machines (with the nice addition of a programmable timer), plus a gluten free addition. However, I tend to make just two basic recipes and it works pretty much identically to the old machine (even down to the length of programme).

This new model is significantly quieter than the old designs; the paddle (which flips down during the process) makes a significantly smaller hole in the bread. It also comes with a nifty paddle extractor tool if the paddle stays in the loaf when it is removed from the tin. It has a smaller footprint on the worksurface, and the sides stay much cooler than the old designs. I can run identical recipes to my old machines, and they now rise and bake nicely (not the case in the last couple of months of either old machine).

The only downside so far is that the pan sometimes slightly disengages from the seating mechanism during mixing, but it has not affected the bread making so far. The recipes in the instruction manual also have far too many extra ingredients in them – you just need water, salt, yeast and flour – it gets eaten so fast it does not need
any oil, and good fast acting yeast does not need sugar.

The picture is of the first loaf I made with it: have since reduced salt and yeast to the levels I used to use and getting a much better rise. This 2lb loaf is 3 cups strong white to 1 cup wholemeal with added seeds.

    Nice quiet breadmake

Product is easy to use. Their recipes aren’t that great though. Didn’t rise at all. Not sure why that was. We reverted to recipes we used in our old bread maker and it baked a lovely loaf. Good rise and perfect colour once baked.

This is simply the best breadmaker I’ve had to date, but only 4 stars because of a couple of niggles. I ignored the reviews about the on/off switch, but this has become a real nuisance for me as I prefer to keep my day-to-day ‘gadgets’ plugged in. The other small niggle is that the bread pan does not remain ‘locked’ in place and moves during baking process. This hasn’t resulted in failed bakes, it’s just annoying. Other than that, this is a good piece of kit and, hopefully one that I will stay with for longer than the previous five…..

Makes lovely tasting bread and has a whole host of brilliant features including the delay timer. For the price, it is definitely one of the best on the market. Two frustrations:
    1. It makes very tall loaves of bread so worth only making 1.5lb loaves to get a reasonable/manageable size slices
    2. Our size button doesn’t seem to work properly. It automatically selects large and won’t let us change i

I’ve been making bread in a bread maker for 15 years now and when my trusty Kenwood machine died after making a few thousand loaves I was apprehensive of finding another good machine, but this one is actually better with many more features. I was a little apprehensive when choosing this, despite the many positive reviews, but I am really glad I took the plunge 🙂 At 75 quid the price was great, but I wasn’t sure if Morphy Richards, whom I associated with hair dryers and irons, would produce a good bread-maker. I was wrong to be nervous, as it worked great straight from the box – I just chucked in a 500g mix from Aldi and the required water, and out came my first loaf 2 1/2 hrs later. The wholemeal mix came out good but very dense (needed slicing thinly) and since then I have made a white mix which was lovely and fluffy, but prompted me to replace my cheap bread knife with a better one. I have also made cheese and onion and mixed see bread successfully from packets. Now I have fresh bread every day an the machine is starting to pay for itself, not just by providing inexpensive bread but also by reducing last-minute trips to the shop when running out of supermarket bread. Looking forward to trying custom home-produced mixes next!

Good looking piece of kit and although we have just received the item recently and used the machine to make just one medium and one large size loaves both have been excellent. The comprehensive instruction manual should be read thoroughly and adhered to the guidelines re accurate ingredient quantities and temperatures then I assume you will have successful results each time. The display could be brighter however we used this in a brightly lit position and this is not a problem as you soon get used to each icons position.

I love this machine and its been very handy to have. Its so easy to use and easy to clean the bread is amazing. It can be a little hit and miss though especially with brown flour, on a couple of occasions it hasn’t mixed the dough at all but I reset it again and it was fine, just a little annoying. As with other homemade bread without preservatives it doesnt keep well so best eaten or frozen the same day. Otherwise I love having it and use it very often. If you want to save your bread by making bread one of these breadmakers it is digital and has settings for light and darker bread it also has a short setting for Quick bread making also just to make the dough you can add fruits when there is a bleep and seasoning although there is a few problems with the instructions the instructions are not very clear and there is not a recipe book the book is in different languages and you have to search for the English language It would be nice to have a recipe book with plenty of colour but there is just a few pages of what to do and what not to do so you have to search and work out your recipes you get a measuring cup and a spoon for measuring but you have to read all the instructions clearly it would be easier if there was a to B instructions

This super breadmaker is a refreshing and innovative development in what’s potentially quite a tired product line. Bread makers have been around for a long time, and never seem to have entirely caught on. If you’ve not thought of owning one before this is a brand and model that might make you reconsider, and prove to you how flexible, easy to use, and cost-effective these machines are. This bread machine is a sizeable presence on your work surface, and you will need to think where it’s going to go. The time I’m from unpacking to switching on is very competitive, and this is an instinctively straightforward machine to use. Remember that you will probably need a supermarket shop for a few articles that you might not usually buy, such as milk powder, yeast and different types of flour. This machine can produce a wide array of doughs and loaves of bread ranging from a quick emergency loaf for the kids’ sandwiches when you realise you’ve got no supplies on Sunday night, to quite exotic loaves. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the bread machine can also prepare your dough which you go on to cook in your oven. Overall, this is is a refreshing design with every feature you’d expect present. It would make an excellent wedding present.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersI bought this unit to replace a previous Morphy Richards Homebake which had given 6 or 7 year service. First of all the pros… it’s cheap; the bread tastes good although a little sweet at times; handy size for cupboard storage; simple to use in terms of instructions; it’s quicker to bake than many of the Panasonics I considered. The cons… the fold down paddle is really annoying and you find yourself continually continually having to prop it up while adding ingredients; the pan does become disengaged from the drive sometimes although I’ve not seen that cause a problem with the end product so far; the control buttons are not the best. You get what you pay for I guess, overall I think it’s good value for money but not as good as it’s previous incarnation.

I’ve found it relatively easy to use – it makes an excellent loaf – but the control pads (buttons) on the top of the machine need to be more positive.
All in all – a worthwhile purchase, even if a little patience can sometimes be needed

Easy to use. Only downside is the control buttons are not responsive to a direct touch. You have to find the sweet spot for each butto

The Homebake is an excellent product that does a simple job really well for a bargain price. Good size loaf, multiple programme and crust settings to deliver a range of options for whatever you need.

Non-stick pan to ensure your loaf comes out easy at the end of the process, and is then easy to clean once complete. The viewing window is also really handy for you to be able to check on how the cooking process is going without needing to open the lid and let precious heat slip out.

At it’s heart, it’s as simple as add a few ingredients, start the machine, 3hrs later enjoy the beautiful smell and then taste of home-cooked break. For 60. why not?

I am really pleased with this breadmaker. I am new to making bread and this breadmaker has made it really easy to create lovely fresh loaves. My kids really like me to make the dough and then we follow the number 8 instructions to make rolls. I’d highly recommend this product.

It works. Produces great bread if you stick to the recipes. Light, simple to use and clean. Had to have a replacement dough paddle after a couple of bakes as it fell apart. Replacement sent promptly and has been fine since. Much better value than the market leader Panasonic.

I’ve been wanting a breadmaker for years, but was always voted down my my other half, on the grounds that ‘you’ll just use it for a week or two, until the novelty wears off’.

Well, I’ve had my breadmaker for more than a year now, and it’s become one of the most used items in my kitchen. I tend to bake my loaves ‘small and often’, and I’ve progressed from the early days of obsessive measurement of every tiny ingredient to my present state of ‘measure the liquid and flour, and just throw in a bit of the other ingredients.’ Result: I always have beautiful fresh bread of various types in my kitchen.

I’ve not yet tried cake, and don’t expect to EVER try using it to make jam or marmalade (horrendously messy, surely?)

But I love my breadmaker, and it couldn’t be easier to use. Dump in the ingredients, turn it on, take a quick look at it five minutes later to double-check that the dough’s not too wet or too dry, then leave it alone for about 3 hours while enjoying the incredible aroma that begins to fill the house, then get the oven gloves and take out a yummy loaf.

Like I say, it’s one of the most regularly-used items in my kitchen now. I’ve not bought any of that squishy alleged ‘bread’ for over a year. I can’t imagine life without a breadmaker!

This bread maker is very easy to use and makes delicious bread. You open the lid, pour in all the ingredients using the measuring cup, select the type of loaf you would like, the size and also how brown you would like the crust and then press go. There is a window in the top so that you can see the bread rising and cooking. I now refuse to buy supermarket bread as this tastes so good. I use it a few times a week. I took a loaf round to my in-laws and they loved it so much that they have put a regular order in! Some of the recipes use too much sugar and salt for my liking but I just adapt the recipes. It’s very easy to use and clean. I have only given it 4 stars as I find the markings on the measuring cup too faint; they are etched onto the plastic and I have to hold it up to the light to see them, and also the plug cable is slightly on the short side, but overall I am very happy with the addition of the bread maker to my kitchen and love making and eating fresh homemade bread so easily.

Used to a Panasonic, this significantly less expensive bread maker has surprised in a very positive way. Recipes are different to what we’ve traditionally used but proved successful. Basic programmes faster than other bread makers we’ve used but one tip I would pass on is not having relevant ingredients fridge cold. Seemed to make a difference if they were allowed a few minutes at room temperature. Supermarket pre-mixes also performed well.

The Morphy Richards was not too noisy and cleaning was not an issue. All in all, an impressive performer at a very reasonable price.

Having owned a Panasonic bread maker for some time, I was interested to see how this cheaper Morphy Richards model would stack up. I’m pleased to say that it makes great bread. The French loaf has always been my favourite – the simplest and the best – and this does a great job with that (you need very strong bread flower for the best results – Waitrose is the best for this). I find it is not as consistently light and fluffy as produced by the Panasonic but that is nitpicking really.

If you have not used a bread maker before, it is a revelation – so much better than any bread you can buy. And the smell of freshly baked bread on a Saturday morning is just lovely (you can time delay it to run overnight so bread is ready in the morning). A tip: remove the bread as soon as it is cooked, take out of tin and place on a wire rack straight away.

This machine appears to be great value (60 at time of review). The see through lid is a nice but non-essential addition, although I do worry that this creates a cool spot and is perhaps why results are less consistent than my Panasonic.

I have probably used a great majority of breadmakers that have come to market and from that I can say that this one is very good when using mixes or your own recipes , with my first loaf i used the recipe book provided but using 2 tsp of sugar not the 2 tbsp recommended (no loaf of this size needs that much sugar!) the loaf in pictures 4 and 5 came out underbaked and with a very cake like texture , loaf two using my usual recipe was very much better and perfectly cooked with a nice crust and crumb(pictures 6 and seven)
The fold down paddle leaves only a minimum hole in the load which is so much better than standard ,the range of programmes is good and with the extra of jam and yoghurt recipes extends its use .
The pan is smaller than my usual one but not by much and it is much easier to put away as it is not as tall.
For the price it’s a very good option.

Having owned a Panasonic breadmaker for a few years I have to say my review is based more on comparison. This is in my opinion. A good entry level breadmaker for someone who wants to make the occasional loaf and small loaves in general. The instructions and recipes aren’t entirely as easy to follow as the Panasonics but the bread cooking times are shorter so if you want a small loaf cooked quickly this works well enough. The unit itself has a smaller footprint and I did like the addition of the window so you can peruse your bread while it bakes which my breadmaker didn’t have before. I felt the Breadpan itself wasn’t as sturdy and thick walled as the other brand but good enough, and at a fraction of the price this is a good entry level breadmaker and the loaf we baked came out well, but slightly denser (mainly as with the shorter cook times the bread has less time to prove) . A nice machine but not the best out there, so although it’s good value for a long term machine od pick Panasonic

    Good entry level machine

This is a relatively compact bread maker with 14 individual programmes. It differs significantly from the other bread maker available on this Amazon page with 12 programmes and my comments therefore only relate to the 14 programme version.

The 14 recipes range from a basic bread to French bread, wholewheat, sandwich, sweet, and rather more bizarrely jam! You can also choose from three different crust settings depending on how crusty you like your bread. There’s a dough setting which allows you to prepare dough for croissants, ciabatta and more for example which can then be cooked in an oven. And there’s an option to set depending on the size of the loaf you want to make. As a result the bread maker is very flexible indeed.

In addition the bread maker has a window so you can see whether or not the recipe is working and it has a timer so that the bread can be cooked in the early morning ready for breakfast. There’s a recipe booklet as well.

In design terms the bread maker is similar to most other models around so the bread is a slightly unusual shape and has a hole in the bottom where the needer blade is. In use, for the three recipes I’ve tried so far, the bread was as expected.

There’s nothing particularly special about this bread maker, but nor does it have an obvious faults. It’s a fairly utilitarian object which deserves four stars.

The “Morphy Richards Homebake Breadmaker 502001 White” offers a 14-programme menu that includes several styles of bread in 1.5 and 2lb sizes (approx 700g and 900g) and functions for cake, bake, dough, jam and yogurt. It can also accommodate 500g pre-packed bread mixes. Most breads and cakes need 3 to 3.5 hours although a fast-bake option reduces that by about half and dough can be produced relatively quickly. There is a small view window in the lid to view progress. It has a time-delay function to defer its start and produce fresh bread for the following day’s breakfast or sandwiches for lunch.

The dough function includes pizza bases, ciabatta (there is a related error in the manual), baguettes etc. and anything portioned (bread rolls, bagels, buns and doughnuts), shaped (bagels and many fancy breads), or have a topping applied (some breads, pizzas) and that must be oven-baked, fried (doughnuts) or boiled and baked (bagels).

It has options for three crust strengths and a programme-dependent ability to vary some timings. It lacks a dispenser for nuts, dried fruit etc although it has a warning buzzer that sounds several times at the relevant point in a programme. It uses a central paddle as do many others. A nylon-bladed spatula will help incorporate stray ingredients from the corners and sides of the pan, an occasional necessity.

The pan dimensions tend to produce tall loaves, especially in the 2lb size which may rise slightly above the pan lip when first finished but shrink back slightly when cool, and fewer slices if sliced lengthwise; it was suggested elsewhere that slicing cross-wise gives more ‘normal’ slices, using the bottom and topmost slices for croutons. Everything baked in it should be cooled in the pan for a few minutes before attempting to remove them.

Other than the machine, and initially packed within the pan, is a cup-size measure, spoon measure and a wire hook to help release the paddle from the finished loaf. The manual includes a selection of recipes that follow the US preference for cup measures, but many more are available on-line and in books and using either cups or weight for major ingredients. Many bread-machine books offer variations for 3 or 4 loaf sizes to suit most machines; one or two of each should suit and most will probably suggest the programme mode to use.

The included recipes require various frequently used ingredients; flours, fast acting or easy bake yeast (never dried active or fresh yeast) and dried milk powder are common to many and others can be added as required. Accurate digital kitchen scales and a full set of spoon measures with fractional sizes will prove valuable. The machine is potentially capable of consistent results but experience will help achieve the very best results every time.

Ive had several Panasonic bread makers over the last 30 (yes) years, and never bought another brand as I had been convinced they were rubbish. This one has changed my mind. Its smaller and sleeker than the Pan, and fits better ont he worktop under the wall cupboards. My kitchen is old so there isnt much room under there.

The pan is lighter and thinner than the Pan. (IYSWIM). The blade is and interesting articulated 2 part thing, not sure why. Instruction book is surprisignly good; I used the 2 page getting started spread to make my first loaf, a medium plain white loaf. The recipe says use sunflower oil, I would usually use butter but for testing I used oil. You put the ingredients in in the opposite order to t he Pan, ie water first and yeast last.

The bake time is shorter too, 3 and something hours which is at least half an hour less. There’s also a viewing window which being who I am actually caused me some stress as for the first few minutes nothing seemed to be happening; the blade was just turning (in the water?) underneath the flour. Oddly the instructions contradict themselves; Dont open the Lid followed by open the lid to check the dough is the right consistency. I checked and it was.

The beeps went and I got the loaf out. theres a little wire hooky thing to get the blade out with but it wasnt needed, the loaf slipped out beautifully. Perfect rise, great crumb, nice chewy crust. Next time I’ll use butter and after that some of the other recipes; I’m impressed.

    Really good Panasonic competito

This breadmaker comes with an excellent manual that includes a wide range of recipes as well as good instructions. It makes pretty good bread too! There are some recipes for cake, jam and yogurt, as well as various forms of bread. All the recipes we’ve tried so far have come out well. The instructions are a bit long-winded at times, for experienced bakers, but perfect for beginners.

We use half the salt suggested in recipes and leave out all or most of the sugar (except in sweet loaves of course, when we just reduce it). Salt is included mainly for flavour. By all means follow the recipe, if you’re use salt in the kitchen. Sugar is said to feed the yeast but we don’t find it makes any noticeable difference except perhaps to enhance the crust colour marginally.

It’s irritating that the recipes give cup measures, with grams and millilitres only in brackets afterwards. Cups are much less accurate, and yet accuracy is essential in bread making, especially when a machine rather than working hands-on. I’d recommend putting the pan on some digital scales and weighing everything in. That includes liquids. For most liquids, notably water and milk, 1ml = 1g. Oils are lighter, around 80ml to 100g or 12g to a 15ml tablespoon. Syrups are heavier, at around 20g to a 15ml tablespoon. Build your own table, over time.

Negatives? The big one is absence of a dispenser for nuts/seeds/dried fruit. They’re likely to get a little mashed, added at the start. You can add them when the beeper sounds of course, but that’s no good for overnight bread using the delay timer or if you’re out of earshot of the machine.

Minor points are that there is sometimes some unmixed flour or even dough around the edges of loaves, the display isn’t always easy to read and the controls can be a bit unresponsive to the touch. Beware the very hot top of the machine too.

Overall, this is great value at the current 59 Amazon price. We’ll be reverting to our Panasonic, however (our third). It’s more expensive but has a dispenser and, in our view, makes slightly better bread.

This has been my second experience of owning a bread maker, and I’m already far more impressed than I had been with my old machine, a FastBake machine from the same brand.

Looks-wise, this 502001 machine is definitely smarter looking, with a stainless steel top panel, and a shape that’s taller and has a smaller footprint. The steel top panel does seem to show marks really easily. Every fingerprint touch shows up. When switched on, this has an easy to read blue LED panel. This displays the cycle time to be taken, the crust darkness of the current setting, as well as the number of the programme that has been selected.

This machine is slower than my old machine when it comes to making bread. Proving and kneading time is longer – however my first trial loaf (a 1.5lb basic white baked on the medium crust setting) came out edible after around three hours, unlike loaves made in the old machine which, unless I stopped the machine to increase the proving time, seemed to range between the texture of bricks and on the dense side. Unlike my old machine, this has settings only for 1.5lb and 2lb loaves.

In addition to the longer proving and kneading times on this machine, I noticed that the mixing paddle is hinged, allowing it to flip up and down as well as rotate on the spindle when on mixing and kneading cycles – although I checked to see how this was doing, I didn’t need to stop the machine to help ensure an even mix as I had been doing with my old bread maker. I have pictured the paddle for this machine, next to the single piece paddle from my old machine. I did forget to take the kneading paddle out of the mixed dough as I normally would before this started its last rise and baking cycle, so ended up needing to hook the stuck metal piece out of my bread using the tool provided.

I don’t see myself jam making in this, I like making jam over the hob, but I’ll be interested to see how well the yogurt making cycle works out – I’ve been making my own yogurt and cream cheese using regular whole milk in our slow cooker. The recipe included with this bread maker is quite different from the method I’ve been using, including a combination of UHT whole milk and skimmed milk powder – although both require a live yogurt starter.

I made the fruit loaf the first day I got it, very nice!!! Very surprised that it worked so well for this price!
