I needed a light at the side of the house, something easy to have put up and no big expense.
    This has been perfect.

It is motion censored and only comes on when needed. It is weatherproof, essential of the outside place I have placed it which is not at all shielded.

It is reckoned the batteries will last a year if it is activated 8-10 times in 24 hours. I think it will deactivated much less often so hopefully the battery will last 3-4 years.

This light is definitely bright enough for where i have placed it. That it was easy to put up and only requires batteries is a huge plus. I don’t have to worry about there being enough sun to have any solar energy to power it.
I tried solar lights previously but they failed as the sun is mostly blocked where I am be a huge tree.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersVery good light for the money paid. Firstly, don’t be put of by the description of brown colour. It’s so dark as to be near black. Easy to install – love the fact the unit easily detaches from the bracket to allow straightforward mounting. The sensor is sensitive but not so as to activate the light needlessly. Brightness of lamp is very good. I placed mine in a very dark corner of my back garden where the path was near impossible to see and this unit has transformed it. Would recommend.

Had this installed above shed door for about a month. Weather has been pretty wet and light is standing up. Motion detection good. Light comes on about 6-10 feet from door. Good light although not really bright but perfect for my needs. Easy to install and use. Although screws supplied seem a bit flimsy. Good value for money. Would recommend

This light is perfect. It lights up the passageway between our house and next doors which leads from our back garden to our front garden. It it perfect. You can set it to suit your needs so ours is set so that it would go off if someone approached our gate but not if some just walks past our house. The batteries are still going after a year!

He was so impressed that he sent me a photo (as I was out) to how bright it was!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLiving in a flat where the entrance steps were obscured I bought one of these lights within a couple of days of moving in. The top step has a concrete slope to it and I was forever shuffling my feet to find where the slope finished and the steps started. The motion sensor on the light means a stutter step is all I need to do before the area is properly bathed in bright LED lighting.
The light stays in long enough for me to find and locate the barrel lock on my front door and still in when I use the key on my Yale lock to open the door.
Particularly good in the very dark mornings and evenings we’ve had this year.
Also the light itself will be very easy to remove for when the light is not needed in summer months or when changing batteries. I’ve not had it long but I’ve read how the batteries last a year with normal domestic activity.
Fixing the mount to the wall was simply three screws but there is no cover plate on the mount to stop people unscrewing the mount and having it away. I’ve superglued the tops of the screws into a flat surface because if I move this light is cheap enough for me to replace in my new home.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPerfect for me, I already have one outside my back door and the battery has lasted over 2 years so I needed another one over my garage door and this has proved invaluable for me. Electric lights cost too me. This was easy to install as I am handy with a drill, I like DIY.

I wrote the review above in 2019. I have an older one I purchased in 2017 and that is still working very well. However, the one I purchase in 2019 is giving me problems: the sensor does not de-activate. The light comes on when it detects movement but for the past few months, the does not switch off, it blinks then the light comes on again. Why is this happening? Can the seller contact me please. I have relied on this light outside my back door for the past two years and this is now inconvenient for me not having the light as I have had to remove it because it’s using up the battery.

First impressions are how bright the light is on just three LR20 ‘D’ type batteries. Fitting the batteries is easy and can be done in situ. Battery life is excellent. It depends upon how often it is activated but in areas that nobody should be, the batteries will last for a whole year which is excellent value for money. The casing opens and closes positively and so far has proven to be water tight. The motion sensor is sensitive enough to protect a whole driveway if required.

The light comes with a fitting kit and can be located just about anywhere you need it. Inside or outside, whatever the weather. An effective solution for a requirement to provide security or safety lighting quickly and even remote from mains power.

The bracket was easy to secure with a couple of screws and the light is positioned from there, batteries mean no need for any wiring which is great, the sensor works well and the light is bright enough. For the price it’s an excellent product, my neighbours though it might be a security camera, not sure if that would fool potential troublemakers though…

Mr Beams make incredible motion-activated lights. I have been so impressed with their internal lights that I was delighted to have the opportunity to try out their outdoor range. This one is big and bright (a little heavy but very robust), and works exceedingly well – I have it in sited down my side alley and it operates alongside my main (wired) security lights – and it is comparable in both its motion-detection and brightness. I have been using it now for five months with no issues (rain, frost, wind, etc) and am very pleased with how well it performs.
For entrance-ways, I would recommend that you think about where the light will be positioned, as it is VERY bright and it would need to be high enough to point downwards – you don’t want to be blinded every time you get to your front door.
For anyone looking for a quick fix to a security light need, then I highly recommend that you consider this product.

Minus a point for requring battries and not using solar power.

The reason I ordered this is primarily for use during the winter when I arrive home in the dark and trying to fit the key in the front door keyhole is a bit like trying to pin the tail on the donkey. After a bit of messing about on a step ladder, I managed to find the optimum position and fitted it to one of my porch’s wooden supporting joists next to the door. The light is not blinding and the motion sensor arc is not amazing (possibly more to do with where I’ve fitted it than anything else) but it does what I want it to do. If you’re after a cheap and easy self-fit door light, this is fit for purpose. However, if you’re after a security light I suggest buying something more substantial or employing an electrician to fit something more permanent.

We have only had this up for a couple of days, but so far it has been really good. A good bright light shines out for a good couple of meters and it is very sensitive to motion. I just hope that it doesn’t eat batteries – too early to tell at the moment.

  61. krista lafave says:

     United Kingdom 🇬🇧

We have lots of Mr Beams lights all over the house, garden and garage as we have bought them gradually over the years to light our home better.

This is a new style of light, which has a reflector ring all round the LED cluster to disperse the light in a larger vector and in a more uniform way.

The actual light itself is very bright, and the motion detector works well from around 8 meters for our particular light, which we have mounted on the side of the shed pointing towards the side gate which goes out to the pavement. The beam angle is nice a wide, so it covers the whole area of garden that I need it to.

The casing is also very good, it’s totally weather-proof and we have never had any of our exterior lights fail because of water ingress, so I’m expecting the same to be true of this light.

The batteries last around 4-6 months, using good quality Duracell’s, but that will depend on how often the light gets triggered by people, animals or cars. Swapping batteries is very easy. The casing simply unscrews and the battery unit slides out.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersMr Beams Outdoor Motion Sensor Battery Lamp Model MB360XT

    * This Mr Beams outdoor, battery operated sensor activated lamp is just great, especially when you don’t want to go to the expense of a light that runs on the mains electricity.
    * This lamp runs on 3 x D size Batteries, either Alkaline or Rechargeable.
    * Unscrew the Lamp holder, and then just position this where you want it, using the three screws provided.
    * Unscrew the front of the lamp and insert 3 x D size Batteries, screw the lamp back in. It is useful to grease it a little bit or spray a small amount of WD40 so it is easy to unscrew after it has been out in the weather.
    * Re-attach the lamp to the bracket and angle it using the adjustor hinge on the side.
    * The sensor works well and the lamp is nice and bright. I have not found that it is affected by rain.
    * Note it will be activated in windy weather by any garden plants that move in the sensor range. Once lit, the lamp stays on for a little while and then goes out.
    * If the lamp starts staying on, OR going off and then on again soon after, just test the batteries because I have found it can do this when the batteries are getting low.

    Very Useful & Effective

This is an LED, battery operated, light sensor. It has a waterproof casing and can be used outside. You need 3XD sized batteries. It comes with a bracket and an adjustable hinge, so you can angle it whichever way you want. Obviously, as this only uses batteries, it can be easily put up yourself and you don’t need any specialist knowledge in order to get this working easily.

You can use this anywhere outside, where you may need an extra light. If you have a side door, for instance, or if you park your car at the side of the house. This just gives you a little extra light to see by, it gives you security and is easily light enough; especially if there is no other light source. Just make sure it is not near anything which will set the sensor off — such as branches or large plants. Overall, very useful, easy to use and simple to install.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a functional battery-powered, motion-activated outdoor light. It takes three of the big D cell batteries which aren’t supplied. It feels like a well made thing and as you twist the battery compartment shut you can feel it biting down on the waterproof o-ring inside. The foot of the light has three screw holes and there are screws and rawlplugs supplied. It’s a straightforward thing to fit and once you’re done there are two knuckle screws to adjust the position of the beam. There’s a light sensor and once it gets to dusk conditions, the light comes on for 20 seconds when it detects movement. I’m about ten strides from the back of the house when the light comes on, so the stated 30ft range is at least approximately accurate. It’s only 200 lumens from a single LED. It’s certainly bright enough to light up my small back garden, but it’s nowhere near as bright as my neighbours mains powered security light. I think it’s fair to say that it won’t act as much of a deterrent in a security sense, but there’s enough light to find my back door and insert the key which is all I really wanted.

I have used quite a lot of these Mr Beams lights – including some that are networked to each other. This is the basic cheap version and will suit most people rather well. They are very simple to fit, the batteries last for a year in most conditions and they give out a surprising amount of light. There are many different models – so spend a bit of time looking at the features to see what suits your situation best. I really rate them.

I’ve owned and used many different LED motion lamps in the past, and of them all, this is the most impressive to-date!

About the size of a large coffee mug, it’s sturdily built and has very good weather sealing, making it safe to site even on exposed walls that will experience driving rain. I tested mine under the direct high pressure spray of my hose and the insides remained totally dry.

The best feature is the bright, wide beam which easily illuminates my entire garden path. It’s very impressive performance from the single centre mounted LED, aided by the wide reflector element. I see the odd viewer has stated it isn’t very bright, but I disagree – for a battery powered LED light with a long battery life it’s pretty amazing actually. No, it isn’t as bright as a mains light but that’s a different proposition entirely, and you need to have realistic expectations. This light certainly gives you enough illumination to see what you’re doing though.

Below the reflector sits the motion detector which picks up movement easily from 8m away in my case. Within the motion sensor housing a photo diode senses ambient light levels, turning off the lamp during daylight hours and saving valuable battery life. The device uses three large and chunky D sized cells, clamped in a battery holder cradle. This battery size isn’t all that common these days, and I choose to run my lamp from nine AA rechargeable batteries instead, using three AA to D cell adaptors. It seems to be a good solution.

The exterior of the lamp is entirely clean, with no switches or knobs to twiddle and risk going faulty. That improves reliability but it also means you cannot turn the light on manually or adjust the illumination delay (fixed at 20 seconds), movement detection sensitivity or lux threshold for activation. None of these things seem to matter on mine though, and I approve of the simplicity – previous lamps of mine have always failed through switch failure and eliminating this weak point feels like a good idea.

I wouldn’t call my unit brown in colour – more a very dark olive drab. It actually looks a lot better than a stark black would though, so I like it. You can also order white if you want to hide it visually against a white fascia.

In summary, this is a very efficient lamp with excellent performance and a high quality construction that will stand up to wind and rain. Mine works very well indeed and I’m happy to recommend it. Batteries are not included.

I have to say that this light is probably one of the brightest I have had. I previously owned one similar to this and found that the batteries were long lasting, it worked for months before they needed changing. So hopefully this will be the same. The light is really bright and comes on for about 30 seconds as soon as someone walks nearby. It is made from a tough and robust plastic and comes with a mounting plate and screw fittings. At the moment I have it temporary placed by the back door to shine onto the patio until my husband fits it permanently to wall. It lights up the whole patio and is perfect for when the dog goes out late at night.

    Bright and robust.

This takes 3 D batteries that are inserted into the light head by unscrewing it counter clockwise. There is a small symbol at the top indicating lock or open. When inserted the head is fairly heavy. Easy to install, a knob on the wall holder is unscrewed allowing the actual light to be pulled off the holder. The holder is then screwed on the wall with 3 screws It is best to position this screw at the top to stop anyone from underneath unscrewing and running off with your light. The light is then inserted into the holder on a cog like stem, allowing you to angle it left or right. There is also a screw turn on the base of the light to allow the light to move up or down to get the correct position.

The light is bright but not overly so, illumination a good few meters properly, so ideal for a welcome light or to a door etc. The light stays on for about 20 seconds or so when no movement is detected before going out. If movement is detected it will stay illuminated.

On the whole a great little light, but feel that it is slightly overpriced for what it is.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAlways good quality Mr Beams, and this product is no different. Easy to install, battery operated, very powerful light, with good motion sensor range. Given the expected battery life, excellent value, and perfect for installing outside back doors, or carports/garages etc.

  72. Dan Tynan says:

I have purchased a number of products from Mr Beams and they have improved markedly over the years. They have always produced sufficient light, but I have found that they tend to allow water to enter into the battery compartment and on that basis have always installed them under the eaves of our house. We presently have various Mr Beams products installed:

At the entrance to our garage illuminating the driveway
Above a set of French doors
    Log store
    Bin store
    External doors X 3

What these lamps are ideal for is providing illumination where it would be difficult and too costly to install mains electricity, or where a temporary solution is required. In terms of effectiveness, they are not quite as good as mains units, but far better than solar units; which deteriorate over time and in the winter rapidly become discharged and cease to function.

This unot provides a powerful arc of light, more than sufficient for casual use e.g. at a door entrance or to illuminate a pathway. The sensor is not adjustable, however, is not overly sensitive and after setup is activated when someone steps within 8 metres – the light remains active for 20 seconds and a full set of alkaline (not pound shop) batteries should last for up to a year with normal usage – in our case 6 – 10 times a day.

In terms of weatherproofing, might I suggest that these items would be be classed as “shower” rather than “water” proof. The sealing has improved exponentially over the first items we purchased and therefore provided that they can be sheltered, if not from the rain, driving wind, then they will provide you with good service.

In terms of how they compare to cheaper models, in particular solar models, well I have lost count of the quantity of solar products we have purchased and despatched to the tip. This item for the price more than satisfies our external lighting needs and is recommended.

This has gone up at the bottom of my side access to my bungalow (we have the entrance on the side). Easy to fit. It has the range to pick up movement the length of the side passage and illuminates well. So useful now we have put the clocks back and arrive home in the dark and still get deliveries at teatime – it comes on to provide safety if we haven’t put an outside light on. There is also the security feature that, if unwanted attention, the intruder would be surprised when it came on and fully visible in the light, thus deterring them from lingering.

I’ve got a few other Mr Beams products around the house and garden and I have found them to be both well designed and useful. This LED spotlight is well up to the brand’s usual standard, and it actually works better than I had expected after reading some of the other reviews. It features a weatherproof housing, making it perfect for outdoor locations, and it is rated at 200 Lumens, which is bright enough to see clearly when there is no other light source. This light takes 3 D size batteries, which are not provided, and it can be permanently mounted using the included fixing kit. This light could also be used indoors if required, but it is really designed for all-weather use outside and it works as it should after it gets dark. Well designed and practical this battery-powered motion-sensing spotlight makes a good addition to my collection of Mr Beams products and is recommended to anyone needing a compact battery-powered spotlight with the motion sensing feature. Currently around twenty-six pounds from Amazon this wireless light provides an easy solution to lighting an area without mains power available — and is a much cheaper option than employing an electrician to come and fit a mains powered unit for you. Bright enough for short distances, but with the ongoing running cost of replacement batteries, this LED light is reasonable-enough value at the current price – although some may prefer a solar-powered model for convenience and cost-effectiveness; four stars for value and performance.

I have a number of Mr Beams lamps for both indoor and outdoor use. Consequently I’m aware of their strengths and limitations. Essentially if you want a reasonably bright light above your doorway that is switched on via motion detection, and also don’t want the hassle or can’t use main electricity for it these are a good option. Battery life is ok although all batteries dislike very cold conditions. The limitations are a less bright light than most mains powered floodlights. Easy to install, can be placed almost anywhere, easy to replace batteries and an effective if limited range and brightness. Horses for courses.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe lamp is sturdily made and can be fixed just about anywhere using the screw holes in its base, screws and plugs are supplied. It can also be used free-standing, as per my photo.

Light coverage is good in my opinion, adequate for a porch or perhaps over one’s back door. One has to be realistic about the area an LED lamp powered by 3 x D cells (not supplied) is going to cover, it just can’t compete with a 100W floodlight but is so much easier to fit because there’s no wiring to run and no risk of a character-building shock.

There is no On/Off switch, if it’s fitted with batteries then it’s working, and there are no time delay or sensitivity adjustments. When triggered by the PIR motion sensor the lamp lights for 30 seconds or for as long as motion is detected. In my simple tests the motion sensor ‘saw’ me at a range of about 15 feet, but because PIR sensors are temperature sensitive – the colder they are the better they work – the detection distance will vary.

A neat and useful light, recommended.

I’m using this internally in a dark stairwell where it provides sufficient light on dark winter evenings. I can see why the advice is to use the light externally as it has a bit of a plastic industrial look. Moreover as it’s battery powered and has a single LED it’s not particularly bright – indeed it seems a little less than 200 lumen to me. Additionally the light does not come with the three large size D batteries you’ll need which are not cheap.

All that said, the light is very easy to fit with the base detaching from the light unit to allow easy fitting, and battery replacement. The movement sensor works will and the period of illumination is spot on. If the batteries last for a year I’ll be very happy. In my situation this is a very inexpensive solution for a specific problem which can all be done without the need for an electrician.

I can’t speak about how well it functions in very exposed positions but build quality seems good.

    Four stars.

We bought a new house a couple of years ago and as a temporary measure we put up several sets of Mr Beams spotlights. We didn’t have the money to call an electrician, and didn’t want to damage our new house with cables and brackets. However two and a half years later and we are so happy with our lights that we would not consider anything else.

This light mounts simply with 3 small screws to a backplate to which you then attach the light unit. It took me about two minutes to fix mine under the soffits of our porch. Install the 3 D Cell batteries and you are ready to go.

The motion sensor is sensitive enough to pick up a person from at least 8 metres, and the light is bright enough to shine the same distance. After 20 seconds of no movement the light turns off.

We now have six Mr Beams lights fixed around our house – they are so easy to fit and effective! We have replaced the batteries in our other lights about three times in 2 and a half years and have had no problems with water getting in to the lights.

This is an excellent and easy to fit outdoor light which will provide a good amount of light with long battery life.

I already owned a pair of the earlier model of these which met with mixed results… They were both great until one just stopped working after a couple of weeks.

This poor reliability seems to be a common theme judging by other reviews and even on this newer model the issues still seem to exist.

The light itself takes 5 minutes to fit, the adjustable elbow means you can angle it as required very easily and despite being labelled as ‘brown’ it really is closer to black in colour.

The light is reasonably bright but obviously being battery powered it will never compare to a mains powered light.

The sensor does seem a little hit and miss but is generally OK.

For me this is a short term solution until I can get proper electrics wired and fitted so hopefully I won’t encounter any of the reliability issues that seem so common before then!

I had a couple of Mr Beams lights at my previous house and was happy to start again, especially as I live in a fairly dark semi rural local (very few street lights).

This 200L version is very easy to fit, runs off 3 x D cell batteries and provides a welcome pool of light when returning home on a dark night.

Battery life was OK and certainly cheaper than getting lights wired in.

We’ve had a pair of these for over two years now – and I’m pretty sure both are still on original batteries, certainly the batteries just go on and on. One is in a small external cupboard in the side of our house (originally for coal) and the other is in a garden shed. Both are used daily and the Mr. Beams provide truly bright, stable light as soon as the doors are opened. The design isn’t very pretty – chunky black plastic – but the solid design, practicality and usefulness are top notch.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersSo far I love this light. I have had other types but not this brand & this is by far the best. Its bright, compact, has a wide angle beam & the light is very clear indeed. It seems to be watertight but due to the long dry summer we are having I cannot really comment on how it will cope following a good old British downpour. Watch this space.

My other half fitted this under the eaves of a one storey extension and he said it was really easy to fit. It casts a good light about halfway down our long back garden and it comes on immediately we step out the back door. The range and light cast is as described. It is not as powerful as the old electrically powered spotlight we used to have high up on the top of the house but it does the job and we didnt want the hassle of wiring a light from the outside into the house.

This light is very good. I wanted something that was wireless but not solar powered, as sometimes you do not get enough sunlight in this country ! But as it is battery powered it worked perfectly for my needs and was actually quite powerful.

Delighted with this product. Easily installed, not obtrusive and works really well. Batteries are expensive (as always) but it’s saved alot of hassle running wires etc and it does the job perfectly. Gives just enough light for our drive and the PIR works really well. Will probably get another one.
