I have tried a few and some of the expensive ones feel nice, but this was about 75 quid a couple of years ago. I had to return an alesis one of the same price because it was jaked. but i got this and it felt pretty good. bit springy but thats what you expect. its taken a right battering for the last couple of years and its still solid. recommend. dont buy alesis cos its junk.

A lot of items on amazon in this category being “midi keyboards” are generally all plastic mushy key garbage with stupid drivers that don’t work in the first place. This keyboard is not that, the GX61 is extremely high quality for its price, the keys are very not mushy and feel a lot like my grandpa’s old piano I had as a kid 😀
I personally use this for making beats within FL Studio 20, it works flawlessly within that with very little troubleshooting to get it going if you know at a basic level what you are doing. they give you a wide variety of onboard options for the keyboard, but these aren’t required to be used to experience the functionality of this item. other than the octave and transpose selectors essentially. I give this item 5 stars if you are looking for a good full sized midi keyboard on amazon. For its price, ($127) this can’t be beat.

I really have nothing bad to say about this keyboard. You don’t have to press hard on the keys to play, like other ones I’ve bought for the same price. It feels really nice, it’s got pitch and modulation. The keys aren’t too small. Everything is just perfect. It even comes with a MIDI to USB which is really nice.

This MIDI controller is a fantastic value, well built and generally great. BUT the keys … they’re not fully-weighted piano-style keys, but they’re like partway to it. If you’re an organ player and are accustomed to the feel of the manuals on a B-3, it will bother you and it will slow you down and you should pick a different product.

But it’s an excellent keyboard. If you’re a piano player looking to do some synth stuff, and you don’t want full-on piano weight but the “casio keyboard” lightweight keys bother you, this is the one you want.

The keys feel pretty decent, but they make a lot of noise. Yet, the keys still have a lot of resistance to them. They don’t feel cheap, or like they’ll fall apart. The sound is more from the fingers first touching the keys.

Really nice mod wheel, the potentiometer is solid too. The pitch bend wheel has a bit of resistance too.

Overall, the construction is pretty solid, and doesn’t feel cheap at all. It directly works with my DAW (Reaper), without any configuration.

Identifies itself as /dev/midi1 ; to use in LMMS I had to use the alsa_raw and device “hw:1,0,0”. But works fine. I haven’t assigned any custom keys so the left-hand panel does nothing for me (except pitch bend). But for the money; it’s okay.

I think this 61-key model is the best value for beginners. At roughly $100, this was the only model I found in my research to have 61-keys. The other models also had some MIDI mappable sliders, faders, knobs, and pads with the caveat of only 25 keys.

This model does not have an extra inputs, but I have other MIDI gadgets so I just needed as close to a full size piano (88 keys) as I could find.

It is a plastic keyboard but its remarkably solid. The form factor is very compact. The only connections on this model are a USB for connecting to your device and an input for a sustain pedal. I picked up the flat black style of sustain pedal from m-audio for roughly $20 more dollars.

There are no speakers or built in sounds on this device. No headphones port either. It is intended to send MIDI signals to software on your computer or mobile device. There are loads of free “plugins” and “patches” available on the internet. This model may even have some included, I can’t recall.

I personally use it with Ableton Live as my primary DAW. For my sound library, I am using Maschine software with the Kontact library.

The end result is that this inexpensive (but not “cheap”) MIDI keyboard paired with a sustain pedal and the Kontact library are able to reproduce the sounds of a grand piano in a symphony hall (I’m referencing the “Noire” piano instrument)…or it can sound like bongos, retro synthesizers, drum kits, full audio clips, you name it.

If you read this far, thank you for your time, but just buy it already!!

There is nothing with better value per dollar until you’re at the $500 mark. And even then the performance and studio quality instruments don’t start until about $1100.

    Cheers

My only gripe is the lower notes on the left sometimes double click as in the note plays while pushing and then replays while releasing the piano key. It’s not ofter, but it can certainly mess up your flow whole playing. I mainly bought this as a beginner midi keyboard to learn how to play simple songs on and I must admit it still works for what I wanted it for and I do feel like I got my values worth.

Though I did trade this in for a mini MIDI controller, it actually was quite nice and did everything I wanted it to do. MIDI controllers, not synthesizers. This means that it produces information based on your input. There are no internal sounds. You will not hear any music with this alone. What is does do is the following… When you play the controller, it takes the information you input (what notes you play; how hard you strike the notes; how long you hold them etc), along with the parameters you adjust with the wheels, knobs, buttons, sustain pedal (NOT included)… Then it translates this information into MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), and sends it out to the next stage of music production via the included USB cable. You will require a sound engine of some sort to hear music. These days that usually means a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Logic, GarageBand (only for Mac computers) FL, Cubase, Ableton, Cakewalk (free and for PC), Pro Tools etc. Alternatively, you could use a digital interface.

Anyway, you will need some internal computer software or outboard hardware to hear music. A DAW is a great choice because you can record and switch instruments and create many layers, as well as edit and snap them to a time grid if you’re sloppy etc. There is a ton to know, but the important point is that this is a MIDI controller, not an independent instrument.

This is a really good keyboard and is really easy to set up. It is recognised by Logic Pro and all the buttons work straight away just as labeled. It is easy to re-assign any key or button to any value. It doesn’t look or feel cheap and because it doesn’t have too many additional buttons as and sliders, it is less deep so it leaves enough space on your desk for your monitor and computer keyboard. Would recommend.

he plastic keys bend instead of using springs as far as I can see there are no reviews talking about it breaking so I think its safe otherwise I love the feel of the slightly rough glossy keys and the pitch/mod wheel work great feel great, ardour my daw of choice plays nice with it same as carla rack maps well to it so far only problem is how much space it takes up and the rattling noise from the the black keys feel worst then the white once can feel the rubber membrane depress and the black once rattle if you rub your hand past them otherwise I had a problem of not pluging it in all the way and key messing up velocity in helm vst not the keyboards fault though this keyboard feels great through the struggles of learning to both play and use vst, lv2 or ladspas on the daws mentioned it feels like a dream slick and just works a real workhorse if you keep in mind how big and clunky moving the thing around will be no fixing that though unless you have a drawer under your desk for storage honestly 10/10 wish it had midi out plastic body feels solid

I’m a novice so I can’t say I know a “lot” about midi input keyboards. I will say, you need a program to read input from this keyboard. It does NOT have sound generation capabilities on its own. It is ONLY an input tool. Exactly what I needed, but a headsup for those who might see this and not know.

If you’re looking for a budget no-frill keyboard, this will meet your needs. I’ve done music production with FL Studio for over 10 years. This was one of my first keyboards (used to use an M-Audio long time ago, which was just okay). Its keys have medium actuation point, that’s split between a real piano and regular organ keys. It’s not bad. I’ve done graph/value testing with the pressure response and the two dials, and their dead-zone and variability is consistent and a non-issue. If you get a faulty product, Amazon will replace it anyway. I have no complaints, and it does what it needs. I was surprised by how lightweight this is, but it’s at little to no compromise. I got the pedal as well, and it’s plug and play.

The manual helps you find online instructions to get it working in FL Studio within just a few minutes, which was great. Doesn’t require any special software at all. It’s basically plug and play.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am a game dev operating on a small team who wears a lot of hats. I was looking to purchase a small MIDI keyboard for music composition to complement my full size digital keyboard. My main requirements was something compact that fits nicely on my work desk and that will allow my keyboard and mouse to be used comfortably alongside it. I tested out three keyboards based mostly on reviews and price point: M-Audio Keystation MK3 (48 keys), Nektar Impact GX48 and the Impact GX61. The M-Audio Keystation MK3 was my least favorite of the bunch and my strong dislike for the way the keys felt resulted in me trying out the Nektar 48 key and then the 61 key model.

M-Audio Keystation MK3’s keys are fairly well documented in the reviews, however the overall reviews (4.5 stars last I checked in June 2021) does not seem to reflect this. The velocity in the keys seems all over the place, and the response of the keys when hit, especially the black keys is quite stiff and unnatural, especially for someone used to a full size digital piano (most of my experience is with Yamahas and Casios). For this alone, I cannot recommend the MK3.

Enter Nektar Impact Series! The feel of these keys are leaps and bounds better than the M-Audio’s. I tried out the 48 key version first and once I tried it out, I knew immediately that I would be returning the M-Audio’s. Then after a day or two, I decided the form factor was such that the 61 key version would fit nicely on my work desk without crimping my ability to use my mouse and keyboard for entry while using a DAW (FL Studio and Reason).

I have not tested the other functionality, but to be honest there isn’t many bells and whistles on this model. However, if you’re looking for a lightweight and functional MIDI keyboard with a great feel to the keys, I can’t recommend the Nektar Impact G series enough. Both the 48 and 61 key versions are solid. No complaints thus far.

Best MIDI keyboard at the $100 price entry

I love the simplicity of this MIDI controller, and it’s great value for the price. Setup was really straight forward on my Windows 10 laptop. I was lucky in that it fit perfectly on a sliding shelf below the top surface of my desk. With this setup it’s hidden out of sight when not in use. However I get the impression that Nectar tried to simulate a semi weighted key action by fitting stiffer key springs. This feature falls short of any kind of a “piano action” feel. To be honest I would have preferred a regular synth action with lighter springs. Other than that I am pleased with my purchase.

I was looking for a lightweight stand-in for a very heavy (50lb!) 76-key weighted-key Ensoniq synth that I’ve been using as a MIDI keyboard and this was just the ticket. It arrived this morning, I unboxed it, plugged it into the USB port of my old Macbook Pro, set the MIDI input of the software synth that was already running on the Mac to the Nektar, and presto! it worked right away. It has a very reasonable unweighted-keyboard feel and is generally pleasant to play. I tried a voice in the software synth that uses velocity input and it worked fine — very responsive and easy to control over a wide dynamic range. It’s very compact — barely larger than the keys themselves, and seems quite sturdy. Also nice is the fact that it uses no batteries or AC adapter, just USB power, so setup is really simple. I’m looking forward to being able to go to rehearsals without needing a wheeled dolly to get a keyboard there.

This is my first Nektar product, and I’m totally pleased with it. I watched a lot of Youtube videos and read a lot of reviews before buying, and it lived up to most of the reviews.

It’s very light in weight, but the build quality feels really nice. It’s not heavy-duty pro-quality housing, but it’s a very attractive body and does not feel cheap.

The keys are not super-loose like most boards that are described as “synth action”, but not as heavy as a weighted or semi-weighted board. I like both synth action keys for EDM and weight-y keys for playing piano parts, so I don’t have an absolute preference for one or the other – and this is right in the middle. For the particular use of this board I would have liked something heavier, but if you want something that you can do both electronic music and classical piano, this is a good hybrid for doing both.

Professional players would probably not like the feel of the keys. I’m just a hobbyist and a nub keyboard player, but I can tell there’s an inconsistency in the key stiffness. Some keys have more “give” than others. Under the fingers of a pro player it’s probably awful. For me it’s noticeable if I’m running up and down the keyboard to test the keys, but it’s a zero-issue when I’m just playing. The velocity sensitivity is pretty good and seems to be consistent.

The volume, modwheel and pitchwheel feel really high quality with the mechanics. They are even a little stiff for my taste, but very smooth. The mod and pitch wheels have open faces on the left sides for some reason, and it concerns me that dust could get into the bearings and become a problem over time – not sure why they wouldn’t enclose that face.

I use Reaper as my DAW, and a host of synths and samplers including Kontakt, Spitfire instrument, sForzando, Serum, Vital and more – and it works fine with all of them. I have not installed the software for this, it has worked as a straight plug-n-play device in Reaper without the need for any custom configuration.

I have not tested the built-in midi programming or transport controls at the time I wrote this.

While this keyboard doesn’t have all the fancy features like drum pads or knobs, it keeps things simple and is easy to use. I use and Akai MPK mini as my main keyboard and use the Nektar 61 key when I want to play piano parts with both hands or use Kontakt libraries that use the low keys as key switches for different sounds. The keys are not heavy like a real piano but as someone who isn’t a real pianist, I prefer the light weight keys. The pitch and mod wheels are pretty standard. Nothing wrong with that. The software is a nice touch too. You can make the buttons control things in your DAW such as play, pause, record, etc. It comes with a daw but I never used it. If you’re recording music, it’s best to get a real DAW like Reaper. Overall this keyboard is simple so if you don’t need all the features, it can’t be beat for the price.

I only use Linux so I was unsure if it would work ok. It does, straight out iof the box.
I use Fedora Linux 30. I connected the keyboard by USB (no drivers needed, also it gets power from USB).

I downloaded VMPK (Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard). This comes as a single file executable for Linux and has lots of instrument sounds. All I had to do was go into MIDI connections and change the MIDI IN to ALSA + ‘Impact GX61 (1)’. I left the output on SonivoxEAS (I believe that this is the synthesizer component that generates your sounds). So if you want to just play the keyboard as an instrument through your computer, this is all you need.

If you want to do sequencing and create larger pieces of music, you can download a DAW (digital audio workstation). I used LMMS (this also comes as a single file executable). To use the keyboard with this, I did the following:
    * Go into Edit>Settings, MIDI settings tab (with the keyboard symbol).
    * Select MIDI Interface as ALSA-Sequencer.
Then you can apply the keyboard to tracks in the Song Editor:
    Click on the cog symbol,
    Click on MIDI>Input>Impact GX61 MIDI 1.

I bought a Stagg sustain pedal and plugged it into the keyboard (1/4 inch jack). And now I am learning how to play the piano.
    Love it.

I’m a guitar player mainly and use keys for the odd recording, but my old, heavy synths and their flabby keys were taking up too much space so I bought the Nektar. I was expecting something cheaply constructed with springy keys and photocopied instructions, but didn’t get any of that. The Nektar is a solid controller with very nice keys and nice action. I had it up and running in Logic in minutes. For a hundred bucks, you just can’t beat it.

I purchased this to write music for live streams as a recorded backing track. It’s that good that I’m going to be using this live when gigs are allowed to happen again. 5/5 stars, cannot recommend it highly enough

Fantastic usb controller, at a great price. I use it with Playground Sessions, Ableton and FL Studio. If it had a standard 5 pin Midi out, would be 5 stars.

Bin sehr zufrieden.

You get what you pay for. The Keybed is to be expected at the price range. The controls work good and no fault for the product. Easy to map and very versatile with different DAWs

If you plan on using this with a DAW, then this is definitely for you. However, I have noticed that if you play some notes very fast, it may play some of the notes very soft, or perhaps miss them. Again, this is fine if you are working in DAW because you can always clean up your midi track.

For my uses, this thing works great!

    Model I bought – Nektar Impact GX61

Software I use – FL Studio

First impressions were very good. Sat next to my M-Audio Oxygen 61 I dare say this looks smarter with it’s straighter/box shaped lines. Some might argue that it’s basic and boring looking, but that was the exact reason I bought it. I already have midi controllers and needed a keyboard to focus on my key playing without all the distrations of knobs and pads. So the minimal look really appealed to me. You do get a few buttons such as an octave changer, a transpose button. A pitch shifter wheel etc. All of which are a welcome treat. One feature i did find useful was the key velocity adjustment. (Something you don’t usually get on budget or lower end models.)
The overall build quality of the GX61 is brilliant! I didn’t expect too much from a keyboard that cost so little yet one of the first things I noticed was how well it was put together. It has a nice bit of weight to it and although it is plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap and tacky. It has a thickness and feel of a more expensive product.
At first the keys did feel and sound a little clunky when playing hard and fast. (compared to my used and worn in Oxygen 61) However, I soon got used to it once they’d been played for a few hours. It didn’t really seem too apparent and definitely not annoying enough to justify any negative feedback. If you play with headphones or your volume quite high you wont hear a thing. So it’s all good. Oh! And they’re full sized keys incase you were wondering.
Inside the box you get a set up guide, a software installation slip and a usb cable. Apart from the usb cable I didn’t bother with the rest, the keyboard plugs into my PC and laptop and is recognised by FL studio straight away. No need to download and install anything extra the setup was very simple! On the back of the keyboard you have an on/off switch, an input for the usb cable and an input for a sustain pedal (which is not included)

At under 100 it is great value for money. It has a very sophisticated and classy look incomparison to some other models on the market. If you’re out there looking for your first keyboard and wanting to learn the piano (or even use it purely as a midi controller) then the Impact GX61 could be the perfect first keyboard. For a more experienced player who is perhaps wanting to go from a 25 or 49 to a 61 then it’s a very good investment and upgrade. For the price this thing is going for… This is probably the best 61 key midi keyboard on the market!

I use it in garage band on my iPad. The one negative is that its PURELY an MIDI keyboard. It doesn’t have speakers and doesn’t make sound unless its in an MIDI program. Its fine for me because rhats what I want it for. But someone else might wants both speakers and the midi

Amazing midi keyboard, could be worth $200! only small problem is you can hear a small noise when pressing down keys but barely noticable! one of my best investments

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGot this to create music on the fly so I don’t have to be confined to my studio all the time while composing. Great keyboard. Keys have great feel and nuance to them. Clicky noise is not too bad either. I can’t speak to the built in recorder as I use other software as my primary DAW. Controllers wheels feel great as do all of the buttons and keys. Set up is plug and play. I plug it into my laptop via USB and everything is just ready to go. Love it and now I have opportunities to create music in my recliner, bedroom, and anywhere I feel inspired. Recommended.

Have had this for quite some time now and can honestly it’s a bit of a bargain. Very compact and stylish for what’s on offer and believe me there’s a lot for your money.

Works well controlling garage band for iPad and iPhone but of course most people will want to hook it up to their computer workstations and it doesn’t disappoint in this area. Offers basic machine control for most sequencing software and a range of midi assignable commands. That said this is not a full on controller so you won’t find any sliders or programmable ribbon controllers. That said, it does what it does really well and is still good on features.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usersso far its great.
i purposely ordered just a keyboard this time without any knobs faders etc, because knobs on two of my midi controllers have mafunctioned once in a roland keyboard and once in akai. this time i wanted just a good keyboard without other features.
the keys feel good abd very playable. there are four velocity curves which you can set according to your taste. you can also set velocity to 127 or 100. very helpful if you want constant velocity while playing.
works well with all my DAWs like Reason and ableton live.
there are transport controls like stop, play record reverse forward which is very handy when recording midi as you don’t have to keep going to the mouse and keyboard to press record stop or play.
its a very good keyboard. how long lasting it is only time will tell.
