When I ordered it I was worried there would be a problem with it working (info from a previous review) but honestly it works great! My dog is loving this trainer. As soon as I bring it he gets excited. Great tool for teaching calm behaviour and separation. I do recommend this product. The downside it’s a bit pricey.

Great training tool that works exactly as advertised. If it lasts through several outdoor seasons, I’ll be very happy. If it does not, I’ll be less happy but will likely buy another for the next dog.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersEasy to use, easy to make extra complicated by using all the cool features too, if that’s more your thing! Dogs warmed up to it pretty quickly, but not all of them do. Since this works best with kibble, you have to have a dog willing to work for that. Haven’t tried other semi firm tiny treats in it yet, but I think Zukes might work. I have a very wiggly older puppy who couldn’t grasp the concept of stay, until we realized she would stand stock still staring at this thing. We were able to backchain off that, and now we’re building a nice stay. Another dog is learning to complete weave poles, she races ahead of me to enter 2x2s on command. Now we just have to start narrowing the channel. It’s a well made item, hope it holds up!

I have so far been very happy with this! We are about halfway through the DVD and am looking forward to continuing to work though it. It is pricy but if you have a dog that has some behavior issues to work though it is a great tool.

This product is everything the description stated. We use the trainer while working the weave poles. As soon as I see he is commited to completing the last pole, I click and he hears the beep and knows a treat will be waiting for him. He is focused and looks forward rather than watching my hand with a treat.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersDownsides first – kibble dispenser will get stuck every couple of minutes during a training session – usually no pick up, but occasionally a jam which requires the dispensing wheel to be taken off. Tried different treat sizes but little difference. The unit is also /big/ with the hopper taking something in the order of 200g of treats if you filled it right up !! The only reason I can think it is so large is my dog goes to it with such enthusiasm that the extra size/stability stops it being knocked about as much.

The big plus point though is the additional training options it gives you. I have a 4 yr old high energy border collie and the ability for me to be in one place and the treat to be dispensed in another is immense. For example, send aways training was impossible without an additional person. With the treat trainer it is easy – it took the dog a couple of minutes to learn the routine and a couple of days of 5 minutes training and I could send away to the trainer and not even give a treat. He just waits. I can keep him there as long as I want just by giving him another treat if it looks like his attention is wandering. Training for front door answering was easy – the unit is in the kitchen; the door bell rings, I press the remote, the treat trainer beeps, the dog now goes to the kitchen and gets his treat 🙂

Support material is very good but after a while I found with a bit of creativity I found I could create my own training exercises using the trainer.

I have been training dogs for dog competition sports for over 10 years. I have been using this product often using Zuke’s mini Naturals primarily for getting my dogs to gain confidence in my handling them at a distance during Agility and Obedience. Have only had to clear a jam once, and that was quick. It always delivers 1 or 2 treats as needed.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAccording to Petsafe, the manufacturer, the Treat & Train is out of production. Mine was missing the remote battery which was supposed to be included and Petsafe said they could not send another one because they no longer manufactured the whole item. Amazon still sells the product but what if it stops working or is defective? This is a great product. Get it while you can, but beware, you might not be able to replace a broken or defective one.

Training my impulsive dog who hates when we leave the house. When he got over his fear of it, he began to come to me and nudge me to treat him. The key is to find treats that fit. My trainer recommended this and helped him become accustomed to it. Now when we leave him he waits for his treat when we leave.

I absolutely love this! It’s great to keep your dogs quiet in the car with. My Jaxon would bounce from window to window barking at everything he saw, and my Briar would whine and cry the entire time we were driving. Even going short distances was a pain in the Jax (that’s his nickname). But it’s kind of hard to train them to be quiet while I’m trying to drive! This thing is amazing – all I have to do is push the button on the remote and it rewards them for being quiet. They caught on very quickly and now driving is so much easier. It’s also great to lure them into my bedroom with when somebody rings the doorbell. I’m going to recommend this to all my clients. Thank you Pet Safe!

I really liked how simple it was to teach my dog. If she did the agility exercise correctly, she got a treat; otherwise she didn’t. If nothing came out, she would stare at me with this questioning look. Didn’t take her long to figure it out. Also, it was easy to set up and easy to use. The Treat & Train is a bit pricey, but worth the price. I recommend this product.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis is expensive but I think it’s worth it. I actually bought this to try it out for puppy training but tested it on my own dog first. The machine itself seems well built, there is a target stick which can also be used as a pointer and the remote control on the feeder can supply your dog with there favourite treat. There are two dispensing rings so you can choose one that’s appropriate to the size of treat you use; however the real value and benefit in this product is actually the accompanying DVD which provides you with lots of useful exercises/games.

Allows me to reward from a distance from theco tact obstacles. I can be behind, ahead or lateral and still reward her for correct contact performance. Unlike tossing treats where I need to be close or throwing a toy where I may accidentally throw it when she missed the contact I can push the button from far away and only if she stopped her dogwalk or hit her running aframe. Bonus is the tone making her hit.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersI purchased this in early 2014 and have been using it to aid in helping to socialize my reactive dog with unfamiliar people. It really enables positive engagement at a safe distance.

Occasionally the unit can jam depending on the type of food being used, but opening the unit and using your hand to manually rotate the mechanism will easily clear the jam.

The unit is fairly dog proof. My dog is very skilled at extracting food from various containers, He is able to get into this unit if left alone, but luckily he doesn’t damage it in the process.

When I want to make the unit more secure (e.g. when I leave the room so I can use the remote from a different room), I put the unit into a case which prevents the food storage door from opening.

Also useful for socializing reactive dogs

    2. If your machine seems slow/weak and has a hard time rotating, get it replaced. My second machine is a dream compared to the first model I received.

    1. Like another review stated, use a dremel and remove the outside lip of the treat dispenser circles. It isn’t pretty but it works. I attached a photo of what I did to mine — I can use any type of treat that fits through the hole now! Sometimes the kibble builds up like at the bottom of the photo without that edge, but that won’t happen as long as you keep it semi-full. 🙂

Absolutely love this after getting a replacement and fixing the edge. It’s SO much fun!!

If you decide to buy one of these, do read the very well explained instruction manual and watch the CD or your dog will just obsess with watching for the next treat and ignore you completely. Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIt works fine. The motor is a bit loud, so I switched very quickly to trick and treat rather than rewarding focus, which seemed random to the dog and it seemed to have an (understandably) somewhat unsettling effect on her. The dog is clicker-trained and knows targeting so she grasped the concept immediately, and was very happy about the new game then. She quickly tried to push the target more times to get more treats – I failed her on that. The heavy 4 D-batteries (not included) give it a nice stability. Yet I was a bit annoyed that the 12 V battery which should have been included was nowhere to be found. I am not sure why the target does not have a bigger flat base for stability but that’s not a significant issue. I would also appreciate the option of buying another clicker-equipped remote – would be useful when using the treat and trait outside in a fair distance from the dog.

This is my dog’s FAVORITE thing. I was surprised since he is a cautious, noise sensitive dog, but he loved this thing from day 1. Any treat that comes out of this thing seems to become more valuable than a treat delivered by hand. I just use regular kibble and he goes wild for it. We initially got it to get him used to the idea of being rewarded from somewhere other than my body, but now we just use it because it finds it so rewarding. Highly recommend.

Works very well for distance training. Just be careful that you don’t stick with it too long on any single skill as you and your dog may have issues fading it later. I actually love this product but due to difficulties and the remote breaking twice and only after using it twice I will rate it a 4. Customer service (Petsafe) was excellent and shipped out a new unit, however it took me awhile to figure out the manufacturer as it is not listed anywhere on the product :/ The dogs love it they respond to it. I train dogs and have used it for target training, dogs that bark at the door to teach manners, and overall obedience from anywhere in the area. It has various sounds and silent which you can alert with a remote to dispense. I like that it has the variety as with some fearful dogs they are sound sensitive and they will respond to the sound of the dispensing treat. Overall great product and have recommended and has been purchased by several friends!

    Pros:

    – Dog doesn’t inhale entire dinner in 10 seconds
    – Can be used for training
    – Batteries last a decent amount of time
    – Low cost compared to other timed feeders

    Cons:

    – Battery operation is nice, but it would be great to have a corded option as well
    – It will jam on occasion, although I’m sure it depends on the food.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI became aware of rewards-based training through Sophia Yin’s How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves and Tamar Gellar’s The Loved Dog. As a novice trainer, I struggled to capture and sustain the attention of my 8-week-old collie, Lucky, during our training sessions. When he turned 12 weeks, I decided to give the Treat & Train a try. The outcome was beyond my expectations. Within one day, I could get Lucky to do a down-stay in front of the machine for several minutes. After three days of practice with the machine and other training techniques, he was so calm and relaxed in the house that it was like having an adult dog. Granted, Lucky is a rough collie, the 17th most intelligent breed, and he was already a nice puppy when I purchased the machine. But I never expected him to be so well-behaved at such a young age. I have purchased a lot of garbage for my animals over the years, but this is the best $109 I’ve ever spent. I will never train another way.

It did not work. I thought it was the remote, so I called pet safe and they were very kind and accommodating. They immediately sent out a new remote. But then that remote didn’t work so I called them again. Once again to their customer service was amazing! They sent us a whole new machine right away. Now it works beautifully and we use it every day not only as a way to train our dog to stop barking at the door, but we also use it as a fun game at dinner time! We love the treatment train!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’d think carefully about how disciplined you’re going to be in using it before investing in a training device like this one. Shelling out a lot of money can often seem like a tempting way to bring about change (training your dog for example) but there was a lot more to using this PetSafe than I’d thought at first glance, so if you’re looking for a quick fix then dog training lessons might be a better way to spend the money.

That said, I’m impressed with the kit itself – the treat dispenser works well with the size of dried dog food that we use, and our Collie-Spaniel cross responds well to the target stick. We haven’t had the most success in training our dog by using the remote to dispense treats, but that’s more down to our inconsistency than the technology itself. We have a very busy house, which doesn’t really lend itself to a setup like this, but if you have the time and patience, I think it would work really well.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is a great training tool for your pet. The idea is simple, fill the dispenser with treats, use the remote control to dispense a treat, when your pet has done well or achieved a goal. The unit works well and dispenses exactly what you want. The biggest downside that I can see, if the remote goes missing or breaks, the unit is useless.

Overall I like this pet trainer, it’s a good idea and works well. I am therefore happy to recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThis is a very sturdy, well designed product (with the exception of the remote control which is bizarrely cheap & flimsy looking). lift up the plastic hood and there is a whole control panel in there which you can adjust to suit your individual requirements.

It comes with a dvd and hefty instruction manual so that you can utilise the machine in a variety of ways. The unit works well and there were no dispensing problems, but my dogs are older (7 & 14) so they are a bit long in the tooth to get used to something like this. They knew that there was food in there and spend a lot of time nudging it and pawing it in order to self dispense……I wouldn’t be happy leaving them with it if I was out as I think they would break it!

If you have time to train your dog and put in the hours to do it properly then I think this would be very useful, however if you don’t then I think it would be a waste and an expensive treat store.

Well designed and worth the money, but the remote needs some work.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersVery made and thought out device.
It comes with an excellent ring bound manual with simple laid out strategies and explanations of why and how training works.
The dispenser has a plethora of switches, so that it can perform different functions. It is not a one-trick pony!

An excellent DVD is also supplied with clear visual clips as to what you are trying to achieve and how to manage the lessons.

This product could be used by a dog trainer to great effect or a family to train their own dog with location commands.

I tried a a simple ‘touch the target’ routine with out Schnauzer.
She got it in 2 minutes.
We will use it to get her to reliably go to her ‘rug’ when the door bell rings, she can hear people getting out of their cars in the street before even entering our drive and barks.

There are two wheels supplied for different sized kibbles, standard complete dry dog food bikkies work just fine.
The device really does dispense just one at a time, I was surprised it worked so well.
The lower tray is removable for cleaning and as I said, it is a very study product, the woofer can’t tip it over or open the dispenser.

A battery is supplied for the transmitter remote control; BUT you need to buy FOUR ‘D’ cell cell batteries.
Use Alkaline, so they last, but these are horribly expensive. (10 to 12 for 4 in supermarkets etc)
However, Toolstation sell them for 2-50 a pair, half price (5 in total) and the are a good Which! reviews brand.

It would be better if a place existed for the remote to be stored, the only option is to bung it into the dispenser, where it will get covered in crumbs, so use a small plastic bag to keep it safe. By the way – the unit is quite large, so you’ll need storage space.

Highly recommended and great fun to play (train!) the doggie with.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAfter reading other reviews I was not expecting much from this but my dogs love it. So much so I have had to separate them so that they can take turns. Its very easy to operate, not so big as I expected and after a few minutes the dogs had worked it out. At the moment it is just a game for them so when they are really used to it I will begin using it as a training aid, it came today so I think that will begin tomorrow, I think it will work a treat as reward based training. You get a quick start leaflet, a detailed training book which has loads of training ideas and games and a DVD.So there is plenty of information. It seems well made, the treats fall through the dispenser easily and you get two different sized discs depending on the treat size.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLove the product. It’s only vice is that it only operates on batteries and does not have the ability to plug in for non-battery operation. It would be fantastic if it did both. Amazing training product! I use it in our office with our dog so he does not mug guests as they come in.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOne of the greatest tools for positive reinforcement dog training! With the easy-to-use remote, you are able to reward your dog for good behaviors from a distance. I use this product for agility, kennel training, and obedience. The product even comes with a manual, target stick, and two adjustable dispenser sizes (great for releasing less/more treats or treats of different sizes.) I use Zuke’s soft treats and my dog’s kibble for rewards and have had very few problems with the Treat & Train getting jammed. It has jammed occasionally, but the newer models seem to do a much better job and it’s very easy to remove the treat dispensing disc to fix it. Overall love this product and WELL worth the money. Amazon’s shipping was great as well – product was in perfect condition and speedy delivery!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI brought home my puppy when he was 12 weeks old and we didn’t bond right away, not for lack of trying. While I knew he was the independent type of dog, I still spent hours googling “Why doesn’t my dog like me?” I bought so many books and tried various techniques to get my dog to pay attention to me, but nothing really worked. Even when I had delicious treats, my pup just seemed confused and frustrated during training. But then after just one day of using the Treat & Train, my pup started to enjoy his training sessions and began to pay attention to ME. And that was just after practicing the first exercise of many detailed in the training manual. After two weeks of using it, he now pays attention to me, especially at meal times (the system recommends that you have your dog earn his/her meals with the Treat & Train) and we have bonded so much more. He still gets distracted now and then and he doesn’t always come when called but I have hope, thanks to the Treat & Train.

This is a very well designed product. Right out of the box, it was so easy to use immediately. The machine itself is high quality and runs smoothly. The training materials are very user friendly; the DVD and book are complementary to each other and well produced. We are using this for teaching independence and helping with separation anxiety but there are many situations that it will be helpful. I totally recommend it.

This is a great way to train your dog(s) to go to a particular spot and stay. We have started using this to teach our dogs not to rush the door when the doorbell rings. I would highly recommend anyone who purchases read the booklet that is included – it has very helpful tips on how to be consistent in training. In addition – anyone who uses this should start slowly so that the dog learns the initial step before trying to sit, stay.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOur stubborn hound mix performs like a circus dog with the help of this machine. We’re hoping he’ll eventually be able to cook dinner and serve us cocktails.

Without the machine, however, his training’s still a little rough. He’s able to obey basic commands like sit and come, but some of the other training doesn’t quite make sense to him without the machine around to beep and dispense a treat.

Nonetheless, worth the money. He’s much more confident, thanks to this device.

I really like this and the method of training my dog is very clear. I have run into problems finding a food that motivates my dog sufficiently so it has taken us almost a month to get to the down-stay game which is my main goal.
The actual device works well when the food is the correct size and I have had no mechanical issues.
I would recommend this. Watch the YouTube videos with Dr. Sophia Yin on this machine to have a sense of how it works.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis tool is great for training your dog. I recommend putting all of the dog’s food in it everyday, and using it to fed him/her through training. It keeps your dog active and makes them work for their food, which is perfect for puppies who are active. It also helps to slow down their eating. We are not to completion yet for door training, but so far it has helped us to teach lie down, stay, and some fun tricks like paw shakes and what not.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI required this mashine to use ist for distance working with my Dogs. I Train since nearly 9 years with Dogs and clicker and it almost was difficult for me to reard in the distance without the dog coming up to me.
It works fantastic and reliable. The first time my Dogs meet with it it has to stand my rough motoric Aussies and they did not destroy ist or make any scratches. This was the first test for it. After conditioning the machine for one or two lessons it was no Problem for all my Dogs to work with it and to understand it.
I am stocked about it, that I can turn the volume of the sound up and down.
For everyone who worked ditsance parts with his Dogs it is a great Thing!
Thank also for very quick delivery! (please excause my english 😉 )

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis product was recommended by an animal behaviorist to help train a young rescued German Shepherd Dog. She LOVES playing our ‘training Game’. We both enjoy our training sessions. She is far less reactive to the doorbell and anyone walking on our street. The support materials that come with the trainer are very easy to understand and everything is broken down into small simple steps. Excellent online support material is available too. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to help their dog be less reactive to, or distracted by, things that happen everyday in a typical household (delivery trucks, mailmen. visitors, etc.)

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI think this is an excellent device for training dogs to tune in to their owners and be calmer in many situations. I am a bit disabled so cannot be on my feet for training purposes. This is a great system for me.
The kibble does jam at times, but the problem seems to occur when the level of treats is too low.
    I recommend it highly.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI was having some issues with my English Springer Spaniel regarding her agility work. She had suddenly forgot how to do weave poles and really wasn’t all that interested in working in general. Using this as a tool to train to work away from me and her realizing that she would get food for working has changed her whole attitude!!! She is back to the happy, silly, willing to work dog that she was 2 months ago! I’m sure it was just a phase but this helped work through the phase in a hurry! I can see so many uses down the road for training puppies and am really excited for future uses! After her potty time in the morning she runs straight to the counter with the Manner’s Minder on it and sits next to the counter! She is so EXCITED about working and training again! BEST idea EVER, especially if you don’t have someone else available to train with and treat your dog for you!! LOVE this product!!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBut — it can have mechanical problems. The company that makes these is very good about replacing units, so save your receipt. My complaint is that my machine was inconsistent. When it did work, it was great at settling down my anxiety-filled rescue dog.

I recommend ordering 2 remotes, so if you lose one, you don’t have to interrupt the training while waiting for a new one. My girl has very severe separation anxiety — she was brought from france and somehow ended up on a California freeway — and this device was recommended by her trainer. Plus, it’s fun! I put in broken-up Cheerios when I leave, light on the calories, cheap, and the more treats, the longer the activity lasts.

I recommend this for anxiety, or just for fun. It’s a good way to train a dog that has high energy and trouble focusing. The price here is the cheapest I’ve seen, as much as sixty dollars less. But do watch the DVD. This tool will only work if you follow the instructions, and, like any training, are consistent.

Also recommend the thundershirt for anxious pooches.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWorks as described. An additional feature which I have fabricated myself is to enable the dog to trigger it himself by targeting the red target ball by mounting a tilt switch and transmitter in the base of the wobbler. Its great to see them target in one room and run into the next to get the treat.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is really a great product, and I don’t regret in any way buying it – I would recommend it to anyone interested in pet training.

However, that being said, there are some things that could have been better.

First of all, the remote control is a bit disappointing. It works ok, but does not have the build quality that the manners minder itself seems to have.
Second, it’s quite a noisy machine. The beep sound is adjustable, but even the lowest level is far too loud. It’s great outdoors (I use it for agility), but indoors you’ll prefer to turn the sound off completely. But even if you do that, the mechanism itself is not really quiet.
Lastly, it jams a lot, which is probably the biggest problem. The mechanism is really sensitive to what treats you use, but even when you make sure you only use round, hard pellets of the same size – sometimes a pellet i broken in half and jams the tray so that you need to remove it manually and restart the manners minder. That’s really easy to do, but might be an issue if you leave it on automatic mode so your pets can have some fun while you are away.

Golden Review Award: 119 From Our UsersThis is a wonderful training aid. I have trained several agility dogs over the years, but have never had the success as with using this device to train the weave poles. It’s a modified version of clicker training, only better. My novice dog learned very quickly that the loud beep would be followed by treats, then, doing what I wanted would produce the beep, which produced treats (or an entire meal dispensed in small increments or whatever amount I regulate).
After spending several months building a foundation for weaves, I was able to place the Manners Minder at the exit of the weave poles. The dog learned right away if she did the weaves correctly – TREAT! I can send her to the weaves, which she will now complete flawlessly regardless of my whereabouts – NO babysitting the weave poles anymore! And for whatever it’s worth, I DO NOT have a breed which is thought of as an “agility breed” (i.e. Border Collie, Sheltie, Aussie). Previously, I had a target saucer at the end of the weaves with a treat. But if the dog did not do the weaves correctly, she could usually beat me to the saucer and snatch up the treat before I could get there. This is the best training aid I have used with nearly twenty-five years of training dogs.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBeen wanting one of these for ages, because of great reviews I’d read from experienced trainers and experts. Comes with detailed written instructions and an instructional DVD.
Only gripe is that often my dog’s kibble (normal dry food) gets caught in the opening, which stops the machine. The kibble is Puppy food and not very big at all, less than a centimetre at the widest point. Tried using the disc with the larger holes too (you get two distribution disks), but the kibble still jammed it. To avoid any jamming at all you’ll have to use REALLY small pieces of food. Also, if the target stick falls over or is pushed over, it doesn’t right itself, which I thought it would have. Apart from that, Great.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersMy dogs are obsessed with this. I have to hide it from them. I have worked on targeting, used it for one-jump agility work, and worked on the doorbell reactivity with it. The down-stay mode is fantastic, it really works. The remote has great range and occasionally when I want to wear out one of my dogs, I’ll put the MM upstairs and sit downstairs with a target and the remote. It gives them a quick workout when there’s snow on the ground or I just can’t get them out of the house. I have since recommended this to two of my friends who both purchased on Amzn thanks to their great price and fast shipping.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI took my puppy to a doggy psych Dr., I know now that you’re finished laughing, the Dr. had the Manner Minder in her office that she used as we talked for our 3 hour appointment. When my pup got into something she shouldn’t the Dr. pushed the remote and the beep sounded and puppy was immediately then focused on the food dispensed and not the trouble she had initially started. I bought one for my home and the instructional dvd is a big help. I can say it does work. I used it to have my dog lay and eat, instead of going crazy when the cat visits the other side of the gate separating them. I have also used it when I vaccuum to keep her from chasing the vaccuum. I could be more diligent at using it more often, but I must say, I was impressed with what I’ve used it for thus far. I need more visitors to really get her trained with it to not jump on the gate near the front door or to stop jumping on people as they visit. Overall, if your dog is food motivated, this is great!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI purchased the Premier Manners Minder for my Mom, who has two small dogs with little obedience training. She was very impressed by how well it worked and how fast the dogs responded to it. Her only problem was that the one dog would run over and eat the treats, while the other dog was still at the door barking and jumping on guests. She asked me to order a second unit, and is seeing improvement with the “problem” dog. The remote controlers operate the unit they came with, so a more controled feeding is possible.
