When our small museum’s monthly lecture series resumed in-person talks in the summer of 2022, we didn’t want to lose our virtual audience. This box and a PC running Zoom let us bring remote attendees into our lecture hall, including full audience participation over our sound system. We have four PA speakers at the corners of our seating area, and thought we’d get feedback, but remote attendees can participate full duplex during the Q&A session and Zoom handles it fine.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a good value for the money. The Studio One software which allows you to record and export music/vocals including individual stems is great. It was user friendly once I knew what I was doing. Here’s a tip – check out YouTube for instructions on recording & exporting using Studio One. There are many channels which offer easy tutorials. The AudioBox USB96 was also invaluable. Allowed the microphone and earphone to interface with my computer to provide a more professional sound. The only true drawback is the microphone. It is serviceable but not top notch in terms of filtering out reverb. The key to reducing that and letting it behave more like a top quality microphone is blanketing yourself/voice – which I literally did. I threw a teddy like throw blanket over my head and had the sides hanging on either side of me to create a noise buffer from the room and voila – clear clean vocals!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThis has worked perfectly for recording guitar tracks (of the rock and metal variety) with my guitar that has an EMG 81 pickup. I pair it with GarageBand and the BlueCat Destructor plugin.

It also works well with my Shure SM58 mic, just have to turn up the gain on the box to around 45.

Perfect for EMG pickups and GarageBand

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBarring a few initial hiccups due to my old system, as soon as I upgraded the same thanks to their sound tech support this black beast worked like a butter. Right from its installation and set up to recording my vocals, it is redefining smoothness in a new way every single day. I am a beginner who wanted to taste the waters of music production, I am enthralled how this box in conjunction with Studio one have become a sweet reason of doing and learning something new and innovative everyday. Blindly you can bet on it and studio one as a complete daw, even if you are eyeing pro level stuff. I am happy I selected it and Amazon thanks for giving it to me.

I’ve been using the interface for a few months now and has little to no issues with it. The driver was easy to install in my opinion as they have a dedicated website where you can easily search for it and find it specifically for this interface. The sound it really good especially for the price of this interface. It gets the job done for me.

Compared to other DACs this just seems to be plug and play. It works amazingly even on Android and Linux. On windows you don’t even need drivers though if you want some more customisation it does help.

You also get midi in and out as well as mono out for setups with externally driven speakers. I use mine to control my KRK Rokit’s. It also seems to work well with high impedance headphones though my main ones are not so don’t take my word for it.

TLDR – Buy this just for the software it comes with, and get a cheap interface like the Behringer UM2/UMC22 to actually use for recording/listening to music.

I bought this interface fully in the knowledge that it was noisy, distorted easily, and the drivers were a nightmare to set up. And while all that is very much true, I bought this product for the software it came with alone.

I was looking to buy Studio One Artist as a secondary DAW, and I noted that it was actually cheaper to buy this interface (which includes S1 and a load of pretty expensive plugins for free), than to buy S1 on its own (which doesn’t come with the plugins). All of the software is Brilliant – I absolutely love it all, and I’m really getting on well with S1. It’s worth buying this interface for that alone.

In terms of the hardware, the preamps were so loud I felt like I was thrown back to the days of 16-bit recording, as I had to track as hot as possible so that it was possible to actually hear the sound of the mic above all the background noise. Line level ins were even nosier for some reason. My previous interface was the Behringer UM2 – which I ended up switching back to, mainly because the preamps are actually of a usable noise threshold.

The driver was absolutely horrible, as soon as I installed it, it totally crashed all of my USB devices, to the point where I couldn’t even use my keyboard and mouse. After some work, I just about managed to get it to behave. I opened S1, and selected Universal Control (the driver) as my ASIO device. The driver might be the least stable thing I’ve ever experienced: 2-3 tracks of audio at the highest buffer size was enough to make it underrun and crackle. For reference, my Behringer UM2 could handle pretty enormous FL Studio projects with 100+ tracks when running on FL Studio’s included generic ASIO driver. I uninstalled the Universal Control driver, and tried to use both ASIO4ALL and FL Studio ASIO to get the interface to run. ASIO4ALL wouldn’t even detect it, however, FL Studio ASIO seemed to fix my issues. Even through I now have a working interface, the sound it records is practically useless anyway because of all the preamp noise.

I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed, as I’d read reviews so knew what I was getting myself into, and the bundled software more than made this purchase worth it, in fact the equivalent cost of all the plugins and S1 is over 1,000, so it’s a pretty good deal.

Ich halte das allerdings fr viel zu viel Aufwand fr ein Produkt was einfach “out of the box” funktionieren sollte.

Daher: bedingte Kaufempfehlung bzw.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIch konnte kein A und B Vergleich zu meinem Focusrite USB6i8 Gen1 machen.
++ Soundquali Output war sehr gut. (Adam ax7)
    + Midi In/Out
+ Nur ber USB 2.0 zu betreiben! Macht mobiler!

(-) In Klammern!

So far really good. Feels solid and produces very clean sound with a pretty good range coupled with a Shure mic. The instructions that come with it are brief to say the least so you’d have to read the online manual on the Presonus website. For example, don’t connect your mic until you’re sure whether it needs (or may be damaged by) phantom power. Also (top tip) get yourself a good pair of headphones from monitoring – I spent a long time trying to eliminate sound that was actually not recorded but just came through as I monitored the input and played back…doh.

Sounds fantastic but for some reason when I plug it into my desktop PC the sound options on my PC flick rapidly between the AudioBox and my monitor sound, then like magic after about 5/10 mins it suddenly sorts itself out It’s plugged into a USB 2.0 socket as per the instructions. Other than that issue is a great bit of kit for the money.

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersThere are plenty reviews here that is obvious 1) they have no clue how this works and 2) somehow expect a $1000 audio interface for $99? Well this box has everything you’ll need for current and FUTURE needs. Why? Chances are you are starting to make music using your iPhone. This works perfect but you’ll need the Camera Connection Kit (CCK, $35~) and an original one if you want to save a LOT of headaches later. If you are using your laptop then no need for the CCK.

This has MIDI IN/OUT an integral part of electronic music. You might not need it now but later when buying hardware, you’ll be happy you picked one box with MIDI. With the CCK you’ll be able to record video with DIRECT LINE IN AND IN STEREO. No horrendous sound from the phone internal mic. Connecting this box to the iphone/Ipad and you’ll have crystal clear sound. Yes you’ll also need mics (like shure sm57 and cables) but is worth it. Just go to youtube and you’ll hear the difference. So for podcasting like having 2 mics for the conversation while using the phone for VIDEO is just amazing. Add a Sandmarc iPhone lens and you’ll be golden.

This works with ASIO beautifully. PreSonus has been working with ASIO for years and it shows. Other more obscure audio interfaces could be more finicky with WIndows but since PreSonus has already sold thousands of these things they have gotten plenty reports already to have it fixed. The more popular the item, the more chances you’ll have finding solutions in forums, Reddit, etc.

The included software is adequate as well. Obviously they wont include the full version (full version of Ableton is $750 ffs) Ableton Live Lite is 8 tracks with plenty free sounds and synths so is a good way to give it a go. This isnt a 30 day trial or anything, the limit is 8 tracks and if you buy full version then tracks are limited only by how powerful is your computer. So those reviews about software not working… sorry person, this hobbie aint for you. Cannot say about PreSonus’ Studio One since I dont use it.

For the negatives I think the knobs are somewhat crowded and that the volume knob would be cool to have a big one on top like other audio interfaces but inmy case, once I find the sweet spot I rarely touch the knobs and control volume and other things in the software. Also no knob on top allowed me to put the ipad on top which has a magnetic case so it’ll stick securely with the audio interface (didn’t plan it but hey, better then expected!). I would recommend it to a friend and I wouldn’t sell mine even if I have a big mixer, it too damn versatile when you know all it’s possibilities.

Perfect for starting with electronic music and podcasting.

I haven’t used it for long, but it’s a great device for the cost. I had a humming issue, but careful browsing of F.A.Q. and the resources that presonus has to troubleshoot noise (it is a usb 2.0 powered and interfacing device, I haven’t fully looked into whether it can be powered with an isolated USB power source, and ran through the out channels, which would solve my noise issues more than I was able to. Using the wrong USB port will cause noise on this device, for me, I have to use my back panel USB port #1 specifically to have the best noise, as it is the first port on the base of the computer (with my Motherboard and chipset)

Sound from my AKG P420 is clean and warm. Never distorts or pops. I’m no sound expert, but my raw recordings need very little cleanup to have a “youtube” quality sound, and if I was producing content, rather than having this device for discord, I would be harder on it.

If I wanted better, I’d have spend 5 to 10 times the cost or built a multi-isolated rack/cabinet (again, 5-10 times the cost of this to start).

Though the box itself is the best I have used, this being my 2nd of the same, but slightly upgraded model, I found it very difficult to load the accompanying program software due to incorrect information concerning compatibility with my Windows 7 OS. Though it says that Studio 5 is compatible with Windows 7 it is not. After several support tickets which only received non-personal standard links which led me in circles nowhere was I finally able to create enough of a demand to finally get some personal help which helped by stating that Windows 7 could only work with their version of Studio 4. While attempting to then download and install this version further difficulties were again taken care of personally with specific instructions on how to correct the problem with a Windows 7 fix which eventually sorted out the problem and allowed the successful finally of the Studio 4 software. It was a waste of time and energies having to keep on insisting to get personal assistance rather than being shunted towards many useless links which could have been avoided with a straight forward one to one approach to my simple and uncomplicated explanation of my original problem. The end result was a very courteous and helpful personal help however which I am grateful for and it would help if their information printed online and that which is supplied with the product, printed on the box and in the instructions, were updated t simply show the correct limitations to using their version 5 of their Studio software with Windows 7.

As a starting point for recording your own music, this is an excellent choice dealing with latency issues nicely. Sure, there are cheaper alternatives but the build quality and functionality of this box are major selling points. Midi in and out works well. Bear in mind that this is via DIN sockets – if your midi device connects via USB, you need to connect direct to PC/Mac. The two analogue inputs allow recording of two guitars at once if required. These inputs can also be used as microphone sockets, catering for XLR connections and providing phantom power at the touch of a button if required. Bear in mind that headphones are a necessity for microphone recording to avoid feedback. Monitor speakers can be connected directly but the headphone jack can be used with (cheaper) active PC speakers to get you started. And if that isn’t enough, included in the price is the truly superb Studio One 5 Artist software as a download when the box is registered.

The audiobox was so easy to setup. Plugin in the USB, download the official drivers and everything was working within seconds. I don’t know how some people are having troubles with the setup. This was much easier than their older firebox, which STILL ran on W10 64bit.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have over 25 years experience as lead vocal/writer/rhythm guitar player both electric and acoustic.
When I was performing there was no recording software, there was no home PC’s! That is how old I am! “)

Back in the day musicians had to find a sugar mama to shack up with and support them while they played rock star! Rocks stars do not work! LOL!

We had to really tighten our belts while living on a shoestring budget and as soon as we saved enough to pay for a few hours we hit the studio! Studios were charging $200 plus an hour at that time.

Supply and demand dictated studio hourly rates and so if you wanted to record your original material you were gonna pay or remain a wannabe!

Fast forward to post PC where 9 of 10 households have at least two computers and recording software started popping up such as Cakewalk which were very expensive, complex and loaded with ticks and bugs! You practically had to have a university level degree in recording software or, again, remain a wannabe!

Reaper was the first to offer a fairly user friendly program and at just under $30 for a full version with lifetime upgrades Reaper was the Ford Model T of it’s era! Reaper brought pro recording to the masses where pretty much anyone could afford it and start creating great professional sounding music at home for a tiny fraction of a small percentage of the cost.

Now PreSonus has put together a variety of bundles to fit most people’s budgets and with PreSonus there’s no need to buy any additional equipment because inside these bundles you got everything you need to to download the software, connect the interface, plug in vocal mics/guitars etc and start recording immediately!

There are multiple instructional videos on YouTube which anyone can follow and understand, including complete novices!!

I highly recommend PreSonus. For the money you just cannot beat it!…”beat it”?…hmmm sounds like an awesome song title! “)

I don’t think that the makers support Linux specifically so glad to say it wasn’t money wasted. Can’t comment on the PC/Mac software options but so far it’s worked fine with Open source DAWs such as Ardour and with Audacity sound editor …

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersThis is an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and FANTASTIC Product. Whatever little I have experienced in the last couple of days have definitely given me delight and cheer. Yes, you MUST go through YouTube tutorials on YouTube to help you INSTALL the audiobox properly. Otherwise you will keep facing problems. Please make sure you DEFINITELY go through the tutorial. Here is the LINK to the TUTORIAL which I found most helpful:
    https://youtu.be/WxomMFEZvBc

This link is especially for the MS OFFICE 10 users. I am sure you will get such a tutorial if you have MAC.

I am yet to start using the Studio One to create songs and Podcasts, that will need lot of help from suitable YouTube tutorials and practice. Nevertheless, I am absolutely sure I will enjoy that Journey very soon.

Thank you very much for reading this feedback, Thank You so much Presonus for this AWESOME product. Like many others I too was stuck on the dilemma : Focusrite or Presonus. I read somewhere in Amazon feedback that the ProTools that one gets free with Focusrite package are very difficult to access. So I was scared. And somehow I always found Presonus design quite sober and sophisticated. And don’t forget that Presonus gives you the MIDI to even plug in instruments like which unfortunately is not a feature in Focusrite. That together are TWO BIG ADVANTAGES Presonus has over Focusrite.

Light and Love, All Of You!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersWith a Mac it’s supposed to as easy as plug and play. It was not. It would register power, but my Mac would not register its existence. Changed the usb cord, nothing. Pushed buttons and switched things off and on, nothing. But then it came on… and then it was off again. Then it dawned me that I needed to plug it in directly to the back of the Mac, and not through usb multi jack extension. It worked like a charm.

Of your looking to start out or even looking for something that is cheap but can compete with more expensive bundles like this I would invest you can’t go wrong best money I spent in a while 🙂

I chose this interface because my producer uses Studio One and recommended it. If you are starting with nothing, buying this will be a cost effective way to get going.

Downloading the VST plugins is as bad as everyone here describes. It is truly hell, and that’s not really Presonus fault, but Presonus did make it seem like they were their own plugins. Some of the plugins are only free trials as well, not even plugins that are included. Some plugins are “free versions” too.

Software hell aside, I wish there was more than ONE audio output. It would be extremely helpful for two musicians to have control of headphone volumes.

Also there is a cool blend of dry monitor and computer output monitor, you can turn it to dry and get a zero-latency monitor signal, which of course eliminates your metronome… That has caused issues for me.

Only having two inputs is a huge burden, but apparently thats what you get unless you spend a thousand dollars on gear.

As far as I know, there isn’t another piece of hardware that is better for less money. Get the scarlet is you want PT, and this if you want S1.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI am new to recording audio to a computer. The box works as advertised and when you connect either an instrument through 1/4 inch cable or a good quality XLR microphone, the sound quality is very clear and accurate. The studio one software that is bundled is not that easy to use at first but again the sound quality is very clear and accurate. There are lots of videos that show you how to use the software so there is plenty of support. I have used garage band on an apple computer and this I believe is a worthy competitor on a PC. I wish that the bundled studio one software included notation features and it would be nice if there were two more inputs on the box. The build quality seems very good. Very impressed and pleased with the product.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersSo you want to record audio on your PC/Mac. Then you will need an audio interface. This Presonus has two channels which can take 1/4″ plugs for guitar leads or XLR cables (microphones). It provides phantom power to those mics that need it. It connects to your PC/Mac via USB. With my Mac nothing else was required. It was recognised and became the default input and output for audio. In respect of output you have separate volume controls for headphones (1/4″ jack) and stereo output to studio monitors if you have any to connect. Sound quality is great. It’s a simple bit of gear that works well with excellent sound. It also comes with a massive software suite however I’ve not bothered with that as I have Logic Pro so cannot comment on it’s pros and cons other than to say you get a basic sequencer and a lot of software instruments and effects so you could start recording music with that if you do not have any other programs like Logic or Cubase etc

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersI have been using this for a little more than 2 years now. I’ve used it with numerous software suites, including the ones that come with the purchase. The mic and headphones included in this package are not world beaters, but have been great for home use and YouTube videos.

The hardware: Easy to set up, runs off of PC USB connection. Solid construction, easy to use physical interface. Most of the audio display will be in whatever software you are using, but does have red light indicators for clipping. Sound quality has been very good both with the included mic and others plugged in. I would reccomend a good pair of studio monitors be attached if you don’t want to have the headphones on all the time.

The Software: It is a bit of a pain to set up initially, but provides a lot of good options once you have done so. I am primarily using 3rd party software like Audacity and the Sound Forge Suite, but that is a personal preference. When I’ve used the programs included in this purchase they have been solid offerings. Note: I am only recording vocals, not instruments, so I am referring only to my experience with vocal audio quality.

Overall: I am very pleased with this purchase and strongly reccomend it. Just expect that to use the software included you will need to set aside a few hours for registering/installing/customization.

I bought this with no knowledge of recording, on recommendation of a friend so I could record tracks for our church band during lockdown. It’s been great and I use it for both direct recording for the keyboard, and microphone recording for vocals. I find it hard to get a decent sound with the microphone, I always have to amplify it hugely in my audacity program, but I’m sure that’s either my mike or my lack of technical ability, rather than the box. For my needs, it’s been great.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI have never used a daw before purchasing studio one. I have however played guitar for over 25 years. I have had the software for about a month now and I have already recorded 5 full songs, each with many tracks. I started by watching a lot of tutorials on how to use studio one, since I had no previous experience. This turned out to be a great step for me. The software was very easy to install and setup. I feel like I have learned a lot about how to use the software in the last month. I also feel that the software is very intuitive and user friendly. There is still a ton I can learn about using the software, but as I said earlier I have already been able to record 5 complete songs with just the knowledge that I have acquired in the last month. I also like the interface that it comes with. It allows me to easily connect my guitars and bass to be recorded. It also comes with a microphone, which connects to the interface. The speakers are also pretty good quality for the price of the bundle. All in all, if you are someone who is interested in recording some of your songs or ideas from home, this bundle will allow you to do that. Just set it up with your mac or PC and you are good to go.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve been trying to find the perfect audio interface for a while. I am happy to say that my search ended here with a decent price point and such versatility!

There are two mic/line/instrument pres as well as a MIDI hub in the back of the interface. That means that you can record up to three things total. 2 lines and 1 MIDI. This is a major advantage over other interfaces.

Please do consider this interface, especially since it comes with everything you need to get started with obtaining high quality recordings. I personally recommend this interface because it has the two combo pres, the mic, and the headphones for less than most other studio bundles.

If you are wondering, you can definitely plug the line out from your guitar amp with a speaker cable to one of the line/inst. inputs on the front of the interface.

IMPORTANT: If you are experiencing any weird clicking issues, it is likely because the sample rate or size is too low. I remember thinking that I should only set it to 128 samples, but that led to audio problems with guitar preamps. I recommend 512 samples to be safe.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI purchased this USB audio interface as a temporary solution. The last interface that I purchased, the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6, was WAY too buggy and I had to send it back. So I wanted to get something that was closer to ‘pro’ quality, and that was going to take time to save up money. So I looked for a temporary solution, in the meantime. I went with the Presonus, because I had an Amazon gift card and it was under 100$. It gets the job done in a basic sense. It’s plug & play on Mac OsX, and it can handle basic sound duties for production, mixing, or DJing (I have not tried instrument or voice recording. If you’re on a tight budget, are a beginner, need a quick/cheap travel interface then this is a good one. I really only have to critisms. 1) the control knobs are small and tight. So dialing in an exact volume is tricky. 2) this interface periodically makes itself ‘unknown’ to my computer. About once a week, I’d say I’ll come to my Mac and Ableton will say ‘no audio device connected’ and I have to go in preferences and tell it to use the Audiobox as it’s input and output. Those are my only 2 gripes. Other than that it works for the time being.

I’ve had my Audiobox for just over 3 years now, and it’s one of the most reliable pieces of equipment I’ve ever bought. I use it with Logic Pro X on my Macbook Air, recording with a very cheap 20 condenser microphone, and I’ve produced some really high-quality, professional-sounding recordings. It’s a very simple piece of kit, with 2 dials for the levels of each input, and 2 LEDs which flash if there’s any clipping. Because of how small it is, I’ve taken it to countless venues to record concerts, and it’s never failed me once.

I can’t recommend this enough – either for beginners who are just starting with audio recording, or professionals who need some light-weight equipment for easy travelling. Absolutely fantastic hardware.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis product is excellent – I’ve used similar type auto interfaces before, namely M-Audio products, however I wanted to move from Pro Tools and utilise the Artist version of Presonus Studio One.

As many reviews have noted, PreSonus have email marketing deals on allowing you to upgrade the Artist version to the Pro version at an overall excellent price. In my circumstance it turned out cheaper to buy this and upgrade to pro than just buying Pro version outright! Amazing.

As a pro tools user I’ve found the move to presonus easy, it’s certainly similar to Pro Tools which helps and seems to work much faster on my setup.

Note, you need to buy the Artist VST plugin to work with 3rd Party VST’s or upgrade to the Pro version.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersThe PreSonus Audiobox96 is a bigger brother to the AudioBox, for not much more money. The only (but important) difference that I can see is that the ’96’, which refers to the maximum sampling rate in khz, is double that of the AudioBox. As a hobby guitarist this is more than adequate.
Set-up is quite straight-forward. You don’t have to install the Studio One Artist software immediately if you don’t want to, in which case all you have to do is register on PreSonus’ website, download and install a couple of files, plug all the leads into the box, and plug the USB lead from the box into your PC. This also acts as the power lead, so one less cable.
If like me you already have a favourite DAW (I use Reaper), you need to enter the audio and MIDI settings. So, in Reaper Preferences, Audio system is ASIO, driver is AudioBox ASIO Driver; MIDI settings are AudioBox USB 96 MIDI In & AudioBox USB 96 MIDI Out. Be aware that if you use MIDI the Audiobox96 contains no MIDI sounds, unlike my old Soundblaster. I believe this is the case with competing audio/MIDI boxes so I would not mark it down for this. Therefore, you will depend on using VST instruments and/or a DXi softsynth such as CoyoteWT, or of course your keyboard synth’s internal sounds.
In use, the preamps give a clear sound with no detectable noise nor latency. I monitor guitar input via Reaper with the mixer knob turned all the way to Playback and so far have had no reason to move it. I have my guitar going through a Joyo British Sound and it sounds great but you have to experiment with the levels so as not to induce clipping.
In case you were wondering, this unit takes over all the functions of your internal audio so you can still play mp3s through it!
Conclusion: great audio and build quality, enough inputs for a small home studio, good price and included software if you need it.
