I was asked to do photos and video at a friends wedding as I am a bit of an amateur photographer. I have a Canon EOS 60D camera with a variety of lenses, I only mention this to give you an idea of the spec level of my bag. I knew I would not be able to get very close to the couple and, honestly, the mic on the camera body is not great.
I picked this mic as it is from a good manufacturer but also because it needs no batteries! It gets powered from the camera body itself, so no more worrying about charging an extra item or carrying around extra batteries. It simply mounts onto the camera body and plugs into the mic input of the camera.
The sound quality is very good. I was amazed by how clear the speaking was, and I was a fair distance from the ceremony. There is also a cover for the mic to reduce any wind or other ambient noise.
At this price, you definitely need one of these in your bag!
Very good product.
Having bought a decent camcorder for recording YouTube videos, I needed a decent microphone. The built in mic on the camera isn’t bad, but this is far better. It gives richer tones and the distance at which this picks up sound is also much better.
The ‘dead cat’ works well to reduce wind noise when filming outdoors.
This being a mono mic isn’t a problem for me as it is mainly used to record voice and creative content videos.
A good product, can’t fault it.
Great product!
Perfect for a backup mic, vlogging, or for beginners… not saying that pro’s should shy away however.
Extremely high quality aluminium body, the dead cat works incredibly well (first day out with it, wind was 20mph and I could still clearly hear birds 80yrds away with very little wind noise!).
Well impressed!
YOU MUST BUY the separate RODE patch cable if you want to use this mic with any smartphone.
This product is worth every penny!
I need good audio as I film a lot of different scenarios, mostly including a need for decent audio on location too.
I use a mixture of audio straight from this plugged into the DSLR, as well as audio from a Zoom H1n as well!
Really good sound quality, amazing that it has the “Auto Power On” feature, as the amount of times I’ve forgotten and had dead batteries due to leaving mics on is rather stupid.
Also the safety channel mode (recording left channel at normal gain, and the right channel at -10dB) is really, really useful for when you’re not sure what will sound best in post. A little bit more fiddly, but really, really useful.
Extremely impressed with this Microphone. I use it for frequently for an episodic series on YouTube (channel is War Mysteries if you want to hear the quality) and in conjunction with my Canon DSLR, produces beautiful clear directional sound.
The function I wanted is the gain boost, which is something this device offered that other shotgun microphones did not – it gives +20dB and – 10dB gain options on the primary channel (it also can record a safety channel which is handy). This is a great feature because DSLR amplifiers are crap, and by turning this down in the DSLR settings, the microphone compensates with the gain boost – essentially, this gets rid of that annoying hiss you get when you record video and audio with a digital camera.
It works extremely well, switches itself on automatically when it receives auxiliary signal from the master device (be that audio recorder, camera etc) and it has a rechargeable, removable Lithium Polymer battery, which itself lasts between 80 and 100 hours.
Perfect.
Great mic
Excellent mic but i find putting a 9v battery in a hassle.
Bought to upgrade the sound on my Sony AX-53 camcorder. I’ve been using a Rode Videomicro which was great but I always felt that there was room for improvement.
The VMP+ is that improvement, and what a significant improvement it is.
There’s hundreds of reviews online so I don’t need to mention the operation or sound quality except to add that in this era of YouTube it’s the audio that can make or break your footage. If you’re serious about video then don’t skimp on the microphone.

Great sound for the size and price
This is a great mic for a mirrorless camera like my Canon M50. I’m really surprised by the audio quality. It saved my bacon on a shoot recently when the separate lav mic and audio recorder got turned off when the interviewee stuffed it in their pocket. The rode picked up their audio really well and it was more than useable. Handy hint: to stop it bouncing around so much clip the cable into a slot on the shoe mount clamp wheel.
Perfec
It works well for DSLR audio and makes huge difference in voice quality. Thanks
All videos sound bette
Had this a few years now, works well with no issues.
All videos sound better.
👍
Great sound quality, but I think rode video mic pro stereo it bette
Product came as described. Included is the VideoMicro mic, the Rycote lyre shock mount and windshield (available for free here but not included in VideoMic Go). No battery required as it uses the camera’s battery. The cable included is only valid for camera but not smartphone (need to buy separate adapter). I’ve used it with my EOS 800D for occasional video filming.
Audio quality wise, clearer as compared to camera in-build mic, however background buzzing noise in a quiet room still audible with the mic. Good volume of sounds that is directly in front of the mic, whereas if spoken from the sides or behind the mic, sound capture will be reduced in volume. Hence best use by speaking in front of the mic. No difference in sound quality between using windshield or not in a wind-free environment. Unable to comment how useful is the windshield in windy environment as I never had a chance to test it.
Build quality is good, the mic is small and compact, and is made of metal. Mount is made of plastic and the build quality doesn’t feel as good as the mic.
Recommend for those who in on tight budget but need decent sound quality for small video production. If needing more superb audio quality I will recommend getting the more expensive Rode Pro version.
Quality for a good price
I bought this microphone to make small videos throughout my work as a nature photographer. I am quite satisfied with it, because together with my camera and the quality of 4K with the good sound captured by this microphone the result is fantastic. I like this model because it is small and portable and I easily put it in my photographic backpack. It was priced much lower than if it had been purchased in Portugal. I could not be more pleased.
Best mic for the money
Great microphone and works amazingly well, especially with a muffler.
Good upgrade from camera mic.
Ideal for run-and-gun shooting but for static shots I would still choose a separate recorder and microphone.
High Quality recording
An excellent small microphone for external sound recording when using a smartphone, camcorder or DSLR to create your video masterpiece. The only issue is that it comes with an included 3.5mm trs cable to connect to a DSLR or camcorder. If you intend using it with a smartphone rig you will need a Rode 3.5mm trrs cable which is sold separately but available on Amazon. I use an android smartphone and am lead to believe that the current crop of iphones don’t have a 3.5mm jack, so you may need a seperate adaptor for an iphone.
Decent mic with great build quality
Decent mic with great build quality. The dead cat/wind shield works well. My only criticism is the plastic holder which you use to connect to your hotshoe is sturdy but i doubt it will be something that will last long and have read other reviews where people state that it has snapped and were unable to buy just the holder separately.
Great Sounds
Works very well. Sound level can be boosted on the mic. Easily fitted into a camera. Remember to buy a 9v battery.
Four Stars
Great quality, great mic, 9v battery flap is very difficult to open however.
What an improvement on the last videomic pro, the auto turn on and off function is brilliant and a much needed addition to the last previous version, this now has USB charging which also a welcome addition. One other thing to note the jack it uses it detachable which means it can be replaced, our previous Videomic pro did not have this and that is actually what broke on it. Over all a great improvement glad we bought it and i am sure the sound quality will be just as good as the last.
Five Stars
Great Professional Mic! One of my favorite items and great audio.
If you want to shoot video with your camera, and audio is remotely important, then get one of these. Sound quality is a huge step up from in-camera mics, and with an extension cable you can use it as a boom mic if you need.
I absolutely love that it automatically switches on when the camera starts recording – saved my video so many times.
It has a rechargeable battery that seems to last for ever, and in an emergency you can swap it out for a pair of AA batteries.
It works well.
Great sounding mic. Battery is fiddly to fit without taking the foam off.
Well priced professional mic
For the price I bought this item, it is a very well made and high quality item.
My only gripe with it is how you insert batteries is a bit of a pain, but other than that, solid build.
Five Stars
Very good for interviews, looking forward to use it outdoor very soon, once I’ll get a dead cat !!!

It works fine for scratch audio or if you’re filming an event and need audio of the room. Not very good for any proper film work (e.g. short films, documentaries) I’ve managed to get some good audio out of it though, it’s maybe worth playing with the audio channels a bit on your camera.
Professional microphone at good price.
Bought for teenage son for Nikon DSLR 3300.Fits perfectly and records exactly as he wanted.
Takes a 9 volt battery which is a little fiddly to replace.
Brilliant sound quality has lots of battery life the only ...
Brilliant sound quality has lots of battery life the only problem is when the battery dies it’s weird to put new ones i
Ditch your on board mic and spend 50 quid on this.
What a difference in audio.
I start just me talking in my room, then background noise of a youtube video and then both me and the video making noise. I have a Canon 70D and the audio the mic produces is very defined in the sense that it is natural yet punchy. I can’t place my finger on what makes it so nice (Maybe its because it’s a mono mic).
Listening through a pair of studio monitors (Focal Alpha 65’s pair) It’s obvious I won’t ever use the on board mic’s again. Solid choice, glad i bought it.
I’ve bought this mic for my note 8 since I’m going on holiday soon and decided to pick this up.
Just to clarify some things;
It records mono not stereo
Mounts onto a hot shoe or cold shoe mount
Requires the SC7 patch cable (~10) to work with mobiles (the cable included only works for TRS to TRS)
Audio Quality
Thankfully, they’ve included the windshield because without it, the audio picks up quite a lot of windy noise. Indoor use without the windshield is okay, but for conveniences sake you may as well keep it on. The windshield does an excellent job at keeping the wind out and softening loud breaths when you speak into the mic. I don’t pick up any ‘hiss’ as other people have complained about, but I do get some noticeable background noise. I’ve found that cleaning it up using Audacity makes the mic sound extremely high quality.
Mic Design
The mic feels very high quality with its full metal body. There are no complaints from me about the mic design.
Mount Design
The main problem I have with the product is actually to do with the Rycote Lyre Mount. Since the mic is only fixed on it at one point, the mic is able to rock forward and backward quite noticeably when you are moving about (i.e. walking). This is extremely noticeable on the audio, meaning it is more aimed towards stationary vlogging and filming (thus defeating the point of making it compact and easy to travel with). Using a different mount or using a gimbals should solve this, but falls heavily outside my budget (Rycote mounts are ~50 and gimbals are ~100). Also, the plastic of the mount feels very cheap and susceptible to snapping at any point. You do get 2 years warranty on this though, so I will see if it is needed at all.
Overall, this mic is definitely worth the money. It falls within the budget microphone price while delivering premium microphone quality (especially after editing audio in post). Pick this up if you’re looking for a compact budget mic!
Bought this for my camping vlogs as I use my Samsung Galaxy S7 to record, but wanting better sound quality. Tested with and without the microphone plugged in. Now you won’t notice much difference in volume, but you get a more rich sound and the dead cat cover ensures you don’t get that naff wind distortion ruining your videos. If like me you want this for your phone, you’ll need the SC4 adaptor cable too, otherwise it won’t work on any smartphone including Apple phones. You’ll also need a mount similar to the ones you get on a selfie stick but it has a cold shoe mount to attach the microphone, I’ve bought the Ulanzi one from Amazon and can recommend that too, sturdy metal. See video.
Having now used this a few times in various conditions, the sound quality is excellent, even picked up my voice clearly on a windy boat trip. Would this be without this mic for vlogging now.
A really effective mic for your DSLR. I have a Canon EOS 70D and was asked to film a musical concert given at a prominent venue.
I have spent more than a thousand pounds on the camera and felt that a small investment in a microphone was in order. I was not wrong. The sound quality is revolutionised with this external microphone. The build in mic is a waste of time and a small investment pays enormous dividends if you are thinking of using your DSLR for video.
It comes with a fluffy microphone cover and needs no batteries as it takes power from the camera (make sure the Mic jack is powered).
Well worth the investment. If you’re using your DSLR for video, make this investment – you won’t be sorry!
Great mic, better sound than a cheap version I purchased a while ago
Excelle
Works so well for recording bands. Good side/back rejection. Recommended
Well pleased with the audio quality
Well pleased with the audio quality, the only issue I have is those curved mount things break very easily, mine broke after a few days of use taking in and out of bags, I’ve used gaffer tape to fix and that seems to have it well to this day.
Will probably end up buying another anyway.as it’s a great product when doesn’t need batteries.
Not very good audio quality, but good as a microphone!
Not a perfect microphone and the quality isn’t ideal but for the cost and my needs of a small microphone for my camera it was perfect.
If you need clear audio I’d perhaps invest in something of better quality but if you just need a simple microphone so that you have the additional audio track for editing then I’d say this is great.
This mic is so good! I was a little sceptical when getting it out of the box as it is really small. It looks much bigger with the wind-muffler on though, so will make you look much more ‘pro’ when taking video or photos at a wedding or event for instance.
The quality is just superb, so much better than the built in mic on most cameras, picking up sounds from much further away if needed, but also cutting out ambient noise when using it for interviews for example. When you use it indoors without the wind muffler, the small size means it is much less obtrusive. The audio it captures is almost as good as my professional Shure mic I use in my studio, great for making video clips when I’m out and avoids the need to use a separate audio recorder and merge the audio file. It connects via a fairly short, curly lead with 3.5mm jacks on either end. I had to get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter for my camera but it worked fine. The fact that the lead is pretty short is good, as it means it doesn’t get in the way too much.
Rode Microphone
Superb audio. Battery difficult to access as microphone cover is tight fit.
I had already purchase a Microphone from a German manufacturer and the wind noise on video was unbelievable even in the slightest of breezes, it spoiled 3 instances of unrepeatable video shots – so I bit my tongue and purchased the Rode VideoMic Pro… what a difference (both Mics were about the same price) – I use a windjammer and the Rode performs 100% better than my previous purchase, its quite a large microphone but for the money I think it may be hard to beat & if you register your product with Rode you get a 10 year Guarantee too, can’t be bad, wind noise is now practically removed from my video clips…wish I’d bought the Rode first…Great price…great Microphone for video use.
Exceptional value and quality
Exceptional value for money. The sound quality and build quality is just what you would expect from a professional mic from rode. The inclusion of a dead cat muffler makes this the best bang for your buck for a mid ranged level microphone. As mentioned before by other reviewers, if you are looking for a portable mic for osmo, DSLR or similar style cameras for vlogging or YouTube videos, you cannot go wrong. Built in cable management makes this an excellent choice
It’s certainly much better than the regular RODE videomic by a landslide, I most make films but it seems like it would be perfect for people that make vlogs, the 20+ boost is without a doubt the best thing about it, you’d obviously have to manually turn the volume down in your camera for the best results though, but it’s awesome!
fantastic mic. Use it for vlogging and sound is ...
fantastic mic. Use it for vlogging and sound is spot on, just remember to switch it on. Would definitely by the dead cat mic muff with this as wind buffering an issue without one. Rode’s dead cat is perfect for the job.
Brilliant mic, easy to set up and use, great battery life, just wish it came with a portable case I could use as find myself keeping it in the box. Is a marked improvement on the videomic go and others I have tried. Great value.
This mic is great limited feedback
It’s Rode you get what you pay for. This mic is great limited feedback
Works well on my GH5
Using this on my new GH5. Ok – maybe not as good as using an XLR mike but I didn’t want to fork out for the XLR adapter for the GH5 as well. I saw some advice to crank down the microphone input levels on the GH5 when using an external mike so this is what I’ve done and the results seem reasonable to me.
Great value for money
This mic is great when you’re on the go shooting and need good professional quality audio. I’m really pleased with it.
I’m very pleased with this mic, the quality is great and the improvement in sound quality over the internal mic in my Canon 70D is worth every penny it costs. Performance in windy conditions is excellent too, it turns footage that would have been useless if shot with the internal mic to having near perfect sound. If you are using it with a Canon 70D don’t forget to change the mic level from auto to manual else you’ll get lots of hiss.
This is the most amazing Mic I have ever used and produces very high quality audio. My Son has also used this really well on his Canon 5D Mark ii – a local band, 110 db, with a rubbish sound engineer – this Mic sorted everything out and the resulting audio sounded like the band had been recorded in a recording studio. As with all cameras, the noise that comes through using the built in Mic is rubbish – on the Canon, using manual with no in camera gain, the input gain was turned right down to just one click above nothing – this mic sorted out everything beyond that point with NO Noise !!!!! Totally amazed and you will never be disappointed. Please please please also invest in the
Dead Kitten Windjammer- when outside, the slightest gust of wind will undo all the great work that’s gone into this mic. I truly am totally amazed with this mic.
I had my doubts about this microphone but it performed well on my Nikon D3300. It is mono but that means it is more ‘directional’ and seems to give a clear natural sound just as one would expect from a professional video. The ‘dead cat’ really does work well as I can verify from recordings made on the balcony a ship in 56 knot winds – there was no wind noise at all resulting from the microphone. The only thing I don’t really like about it is the bright red cable – it looks naff! The dead cat is essential but does look a little over the top – nonetheless it works.
Upgraded from the older VIdeoMic.. this is much smaller and produces better audio.
The rode videomic pro is a improvement over the built in mics on a dslr or videocam,
It is a good mic but your subject needs to be close to it to get the full benefit and sound quality from it.
It is very good the closer you are to it, more depth and clarity over the built in mic on my dslr but the quality gets less and less the further away you are from it.
The battery cover is fiddly to get back on and is not the easiest to see which way to put the battery in.
There is a small sticker on the inside of the battery compartment showing which way to put the battery in but this could be easily missed if you did not know it was there, there is also a image on the back of the battery cover showing battery position as well. This mic is more suited for interviews and vlogging etc, it will pick up noise from behind and sides but this will not be as clear as what is in front of the mic as this is what it is for. If you were looking for a more ambient sound of the area you are in then the rode videomic stereo would be better for this purpose. If you purchase this mic you will also need to get your self a 9v battery as there is not one supplied with the mic, overall i am happy with this purchase.
Excellent product, i always wanted a rode microphone for my gopro hero 4 as the sound on them is terrible but i couldnt decide on which one to buy, after watching countless videos on youtube to try and see which was best i decided on this one. It arrived quickly and was well packaged.. i was not dissapointed, you recieve everything that you need plus a dead kitten (windshield) for outside use. It has made a significant change to my videos. I would totally recommend this product to anyone who wants a good microphone that isnt too big sitting on top of your camera.
Good Recommendation by a friend, same setup as mine, so should be fine.
Not had the chance to use it yet but was recommended by a vlogger friend who has the same camera/video setup as me.
Loveeee
I honesty love this, the quality is amazing! Please bare in mind that it doesn’t come with a case (protection) and you’ll need a battery
It has very good sound indeed – I use it with my Nikon DSLR on a tripod. As is well documented on YouTube reviews, to avoid hissing sounds you need to use the Rode’s 20db setting and turn your camera’s mic gain down – I have mine set to 7 which is about half way on a Nikon. The sound picks up really well and is very clear when I’m making YouTube videos. The other thing I found is that it’s better to have the microphone mounted on a bracket and not on the camera hotshoe – this is to avoid the mic picking up autofocus noise from the lens motor. You could always turn off autofocus I guess but brackets are so cheap to buy on Amazon you might as well do that.
You don’t get much in the box but then you don’t need much – it’s a microphone at the end of the day. But a very very good one.
AMAZING Just what I needed to up my YouTube game. It’s such good quality…really nice compact design and as a Brucey bonus you get a dead cat…win win!! I do comparisons with and without the mic using my iPhone 7 and show the best way to connect it to phone as not as simple as you might think. This can be seen on my channel HempTech and video is called MUST have accessories to improve phone video quality!!
Hope it helps you decide
Great buy, definitely worth getting to attach to a ...
Great buy, definitely worth getting to attach to a dslr if you’re making a short film or something similar. much better than built in mics, picks up sound much better.
Great Performance
Did exactly what I needed it to do. Very pleased. I agree with many other reviews that the battery cover is awkward but once you have done it once should be fine I reckon.
I’ve used it a few time indoors for filming Youtube and I like the sound quality of my voice compared to audio coming out of a camera. I have yet to use it outdoors, hence 4 out of 5 stars but it’s a good mic for the price and if you are just starting out.
It's your best mic!
Best mic for you DSRL camera! Nice and clear audio. I love it! It works perfectly with my Canon 1DX.
Five Stars
awesome mic, does the job very well and is very professinol
Good mic. Better than in built but not close to separate audio (even wireless)
Like rode products and have bought many. Bit disappointed with this mic. Would have expected better performance than I am getting even tweaking the other settings. Though much better than the built in camera mic does not match up to using something like the rode filmkit. Also it would have been good to be able to replace the connector lead with higher quality ones.
Best microphone on the market for recording sound directly in camera
If you want your sound to be directly recorded with the footage (in camera), don’t waste your time buying anything else but the RODE mic. It’s a great product, at a great price.
Simply Perfec
The sound quality is brilliant compared to the other models. If you’re serious about your sound and stuck between the Rode Videomic go and the pro then go for this. worth the extra 60. Fits perfectly on my 70D and doesn’t enter frame on any shots.
Classic professional recording device.
Wow. This is the bomb. My recordings from my video camera are so much better. Buy it.
Works great nice sound
Have used this mic on my gh4 and with the zoom h1. Works great nice sound. Everyone else should have one.
Five Stars
Works great straight out of the box.
Remember to buy batteries along with it!
Five Stars
Easy to set up and use. Great product, really useful and works well.
Couldn't recommend enough!
I needed a new mic for my camera, I wasn’t prepared to pay 100 for RDE PRO MIC, I saw the “Videomic Go” and I read a few reviews, came across this mic and found that there is an issue with a hissing noise in the background with certain Canon cameras, so I was tempted to go back to the Videomic Go, I found out that using audacity you can sort the problem out extremely easy keeping in mind that Audacity is a free software, and I couldn’t recommend this camera enough!!! If your on the line on whether to buy this or not, I’d say DO IT!
Best Mic for DSLR's
This is the peak of DSLR microphones. It you are a filmmaker, YouTuber or just wanting to shoot some video with high quality sound then this the microphone you need. I tried a number of different microphones that cost between 20-50 including the Video Mic Go but was always a little disappointed by the quality. I wasted money on cheaper mics thinking the difference in quality could not be significant but honestly the difference is night and day.
This is easily 5/5. Top quality product and RODE are a great supplier.
BEST FIRST MIC
Even Better than the previous model
BEST FIRST MIC. Worth all the money. i got it for filmmaking. Do not skip on sound quality- very important.
Arrived in plenty of time and worked a treat. The instructions are well worth reading correctly so that you put the VideoMicro microphone on the Rycote Lyre Shock Mount the right way. Excellent purchase for my Canon EOS-M and for ‘B’ roll camera/Vlogging.
Update;
The base of the Lycote lyre Shock Mount had snapped. I got in contact with Rode and they sent a replacement from their England base in London. There is a 2mm bolt which need a 2mm Allen wrench to remove it. I have 1 year left on my warranty so they replaced it free of charge. If you haven’t already make sure you register your Rode microphone for its 2 year warranty. Still fantastic for the price.
New version is better quality!
I got this item on the lightning deal, regardless for the original price it’s still worth it but I was lucky enough to get it for hundred pounds. Being new to DLSR cameras and Microphones I’m still learning how to get the best of the mic but so far good.

would advise using a youtube tutorial
light and easy to connect Only drawback is that you don't know ...
Improve the sound captured by my videocorder , light and easy to connect
Only drawback is that you don’t know if the battery is still alive
What may not be immediately obvious is how small this microphone really is.
It fits in my palm, yet it produces level of audio that compete with thousand $ microphones.
It might take a while to get the hang-of it, and depending on how you set it up you do have to have a very sound-controlled environment, but under the right conditions it performs superbly.
Pros:
– Cheap
– Performs at professional level
Cons:
– Can be hard to operate
– Careful with how you set it up
RODE - Need i say more
All round perfect product.
Much better iteration on the previous model as it has a much more product stabilizer compared to the elastic bands of old.
Almost Perfec
Sounds crystal clear and fits on the top of most DSLR cameras effortlessly. You’ll need to go out and buy a battery for the microphone. Wish it came with a battery but that’s the only downside.
Fantastic
Fantastic I don’t think anyone needs another review on this Mic it’s reputation speaks for itself and it really does live up to it no complaints here.
Rode as always equals great quality
When it comes to mics for my filmmaking, I always go with Rode for the guarantee of great quality. This mic has not disappointed. Massively helped with sound capture quality when using my dsl
Sound quality is very good, battery life is grea
Sound quality is very good, battery life is great.
The suspension system does feel a little cheap, but its effective and hasn’t broke on me yet after 9 months of abuse in a bag so happy
I own a Canon SLR and was always a little disappointed with the audio quality from the built in mic. So after a bit of research I purchased this and used it for the first time at a family wedding and wow!! The sound quality on the recordings is amazing! Any speech is clear, the loud band playing didn’t distort the sound, this mic managed to capture all the base, treble and other high pitched sounds with ease.
More importantly, when pointing the mic towards your subject the mic picks up their speech amazingly over other loud sounds nearby instead of picking everything else up. The battery lasted all day and all night and I loved using this product.
Great little Mic
Really pleased with this Mic. Works very well with my Canon 70D. Much more detailed sound than the built in mics. Not as directional as some shotgun mics I have tried, but I think it gives a good overall balanced sound. Windshield works well in light winds but haven’t tried it in a strong wind.
grea
great microphone, price is a little high but sound quality is goos
Great little mic, use as a standard to measure others.
The performance from this mic is quiet good given its size. You need to turn on mic power on your camera as it has no power of its own.
I do get a good quality sound from it and tend to use it as a standard when setting up. I havent used it too much outdoors but the dead cat does work well.
Having made a mistake and tried a cheap alternative, spending the money on this was well worth it. My advice to anyone would be “don’t try and cut corners by going cheap…. its just not worth it”.
I have produced a couple of vlogs for my web site and conducted some interviews outside with homeless guys, the sound is perfect and makes the videos worth watching. I use the mic as a hand held with the extension when interviewing and park it on top of my camera when vlogging. Worth every penny.
Excellent quality. Carrier was Parcelforce
Excellent quality. Carrier was Parcelforce, and box had a major rip in the side of it. Luckily mic’s box inside was unharmed.
I like this mic a lot. If it was a slightly ‘hotter’ and ‘quieter’ mic it would be 5 stars but frankly for the cost and the size, Rode have already worked miracles – I’m just your typical demanding user and nothing will ever be good enough! 🙂
Even the RSM-191 annoyed me with it’s size and matrixing box so Rode are in very good company here with me.
Such a Solid microphone night an day better than the entry grade one (which is really hot on the input) the sound is clear and is very directional as you;d expect from a shotgun mic
Great mic, good price and good quality audio.
Pretty great mic to have on a DSLR, good audio quality and very lightweight. The shockmount is super handy and means that you almost always have decent quality audio.
The only problems I’ve had have been that using the different audio levels on the inside basically ruin the audio and when the battery starts to run out the audio gets fuzzy, with no indication on the mic that the battery is low.
This one was reasonably priced and because its RØDE it has to be good! After arriving this I was and still are ...
This was my first RDE mic so wasn’t really sure which one to go for. This one was reasonably priced and because its RDE it has to be good!
After arriving this I was and still are very impressed with the quality of sound. The mic would be perfect for beginners or even professionals.
NOTE…
If you fiddle about with the camera while recording, sometimes it picks this up. Its not a massive boo hoo but it can be annoying.
I have tried no end of microphones on my camera and on a boom pole fed into the camera, including some very expensive long shotguns. Mostly, I think people are trying pick up people speaking and not wanting to pick up traffic and background noise. This microphone would be my preferred choice for both a boom pole and a camera mounted microphone. Long shotguns deaden the background noise only a little bit more than this but they also take out the ‘liveness’ of an actor or speaker making their voices seem too artificial. This microphone is a really good way of fading down background noise but keeping voices fairly realistic. Nothing… i said nothing… not even 700 pound microphones can eliminate background noise. If you hear traffic, every microphone you use will hear traffic. if want no background noise at all, you have to record in a soundproof studio, pick a location in the middle of a desert, or simply use ADR to put dialogue sound onto video. So, in my mind, this is the best microphone I have used for someone who cant do that. Mine had a different mount which used a set of rubber bands. I have tried this kind of mount now used here, both can produce the same issue if you fumble the camera you will hear it. If you hold a camera steady and with a light firm grip, and don’t whisper or breath too loudly, its great. If you wanted to put it on a boom pole, you’ll have to get a hot shoe adapter (a few quid) and away you go. i’ve had mine 4 years now and it still works perfectly. Get a dead cat muffler for outside work though. It also works well with most Zoom and Tascom recorders I’ve tried it on. My bes first choice of all mics I’ve used. They got it right with this one. mol
Seems Good
I haver owned it for maybe two hours. I plugged it into my Canon 5D3 and went outside. Its quite windy and an electrical storm is rumbling in the distance. No rain yet. I pointed the camera at a nearby tall tree that was being bent over in strong wind blasts…really strong.
The subsequent recording was of a tree getting a bit of a battering. You could plainly hear the roar of the wind in the tree as well as a blackbird getting very agitated. It did not allow wind noise on the Mic to be recorded. I am very pleased with it.
Great Microphone for Improved Audio Quality on Your Movies.....
Having been disappointed with the sound quality of the built-in microphones on my DSLR cameras I had tried using one of the Rode M3 mics from my recording studio. This was great but the M3 was a bit big for location work and I found it difficult to isolate it from the camera noise. This Rode Videomic is ideal, it has the same high quality as the M3 but in a smaller size & with the isolating mount. The mic is very sensitive and I find I need to use the attenuated setting in most small room recording. The mic gives great results and control over the sound quality. I would recommend this to any budding film maker….
Brilliant for a piece of amateur ki
OK so no balanced output here, but the sound quality is really very good for a domestic semi-pro piece of equipment. You need to remember to switch the thing off though as it has its own battery. The Lyre shock-mount does a good job at minimising the sound of the DSLR auto-focus and the directional cardioid pattern is pretty good so long as you are fairly close and sitting in front of the mic. (There is an extension lead for boom work as an optional extra) Like Photocel – Rode has identified that there is a need in the semi-pro video market for a quality product – and they have delivered it with the VideoMic
Cheap but pretty cheerful.
I’ve been using this to collect ambient sound for video, recording direct to the camera or sometimes a Tascam DR60D. It isn’t a MKH416 by any means, but for non critical ambience – interior and exterior – it produces a reasonably crisp, low noise output which is perfectly usable. The battery arrangement is a little clunky but battery life is sufficiently long it shouldn’t be a problem provided you keep spares on hand and don’t go into a mission critical shoot if you’re not sure of how much juice is left.
As I said I opted for a shotgun mic instead of a lavel mic due to the advice I was given. I recorded using my vidcam’s (HDC-SD90)auto settings and whilst I am no Barry White this mic did increase the bass levels significantly.
Thus my only concerns are that the pad switches are not designed for frequent use and the increase in bass. Other than that its well made and the lyre mount does isolate the sound of button pressing.
First impression - wow!
I’m no expert but having just bought a Sony A77 I thought I would give video a try.
On camera Mic is faint and lacks tone. It also amplifies every little bit of focus “buzz” from my not so quiet Tamron 18-50, which blanks out everything else.
Mounted on the top of a Polaroid V bracket (on the camera hotshoe with adaptor), this mic is about 20cm (8ins) from the lens and the lens noise is hardly audible. Compared to the on camera mic, the sound quality is amazing – a lot louder, clear and sharp with plenty of tone.
In time I am sure I will become more critical and find it’s limitations, but so far I am really impressed with it.
I have put this on to my Canon 550D, the only decision making was mono or stero, this really depends on what you wish to use it for. In simple terms without all the science if you wish to record a person talking to the camera go mono everytime, it is more directional. If like me its to catch all the suound around mainly when travelling as a tourist go stereo, india, africa, out-side concerts & music, shows, arts, rivers flowing and cultral sounds.
As a make I think it takes some beating, sure its on the bulky side when mount on the camera but i is a serious bit of very well made kit and you will never regret buying it.
