This is a fantastic guitar for a beginner – very comfortable to play and frets are all perfectly tuned, although I had to lower the action a bit to suit myself. I am very pleased with it.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersMy Dad’s guitar broke just after a concert and he was miserable without his guitar. I bought this thinking that it would be a good stop gap until he could get to Spain and buy a new one. No need- he’s thrilled with it + wouldn’t change it for anything. Thanks Yamaha.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFirst thing to note is this is the matt version of the Yamaha C40, which gets great reviews. In fact one reviewer didn’t like the gloss version as it shows all the finger prints. Personally, I do prefer this matt finish.

I purchased mine here in India, where I am working for a while, as a cheap temporary guitar that I would try to sell on when we move but I like it that much that I am now trying calculate if can get shipped on.The description say the top is made of spruce, which it may well be, but be aware this is spruce ply not solid spruce.

It is a classical guitar and so you will find its neck a little while if you have been used playing a steel string acoustic or electric guitar. But it sounds OK and is loud enough given it has just plywood sound board and sides. I love playing it and although I don’t play classical guitar as such, it is still a reasonable option for the finger picking style I play and sing along to.

An excellent guitar for the money, so five stars on that count but can you ever really give a five star rating to a plywood guitar?

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFrom product notes above: “Contorted neck leads to comfort and good hand positioning.” I couldn’t see how that could be until I listened to the video clip. “Contoured neck leads to comfort and good hand positioning.” LOL. Bought the C40 in 2010.

You could spend a lot more money for a classical guitar and it would struggle to beat the C40.If you can get hold of one of these for less than 100 then you have got yourself the bargain of a lifetime. There are no classical guitars in this price range that can touch it.Superb balanced tone, great playabilty, and well made.I changed the strings to ones i prefer, but that’s a question of choice.I have owned and played many guitars over many years of playing and can honestly say this cheap as chips little gem is amongst my favourites.Overall if your thinking about giving a nylon string guitar a go and don’t want to spend big bucks then look no further.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve purchased many Yamaha guitars and keyboards over the years and have never had a problem with any of them. This guitar is no exception to the rule, it looks lovely, it’s well made and set up and sounds a treat. You couldn’t buy better at this price and I would venture that even for a significant amount more you couldn’t buy better. If you’re thinking about buying this guitar I can’t imagine that you could be dissapointed.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a well made and good sounding instrument. Although it is all plywood, it sounds good, with decent volume, good intonation and a pleasing tone. For the money it is a very good beginners instrument, or for occasional nylon players who want a cheap but decent quality instrument at their disposal. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could but have given it 4 because of the fret finishing. Although they are level and well positioned, they are rough. Any vibrato on the would strings makes a gritty sound. Because of this my wound strings have quickly worn through the outer wrapping. It’s an easy fix, remove the strings, mask the fretboard with masking tape and polish the frets with Autosol metal polish or Brasso. Then buff, remove the masking tape and then lemon oil the fretboard. You kind of expect to do this on cheaper guitars but a lot of beginners will not realise that this is required and really the frets should be further finished at the factory – I’d happily pay 10% more for the privilege. Still, a very good and playable instrument for the money, just polish those frets. With regards to the action, mine is fairly high, but probably the height that would be used for classical. It’s easy to take down so I can see why they ship the guitars like this.

I’ve found this a great guitar to start with (not that I can compare it with anything), and would happily recommend it to anyone considering taking it up. It doesn’t seem to need tuning as often as I thought it would, which is an added bonus.

  65. MilanClayqnje says:

This is well made, stays in tune and sounds good. I sanded the bridge down by a few mils to lower the action If you are a beginner, don’t bother ,but this makes it easier to play on the higher frets. This sounds good when you hammer it a bit, flamenco chords and fast scales all sound nice. Played with a picado or rest stroke technique it sounds lively, loud and bright.

This is not a solid top but it is spruce and rosewood and I have not come across anything remotely as good for the money.

I have tried many brands of strings, but I think D’Addario EJ45 Pro-Arte Normal (.028-.043) Classical Guitar Strings sound and last best.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot to mention. It is extremely durable as well. Mine is chipped to hell around the edges (7 years without a case.) the back plate of wood is coming away, yet the sound is still brilliant.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersI decided to write this review mainly because of other reviewers who seem convinced it’s not a full size guitar! Classical guitar bodies are not as large as most steel string acoustics! It is full size and fits snug in my hard guitar case. I have been playing classical guitar for 30 yrs. This Yamaha guitar has been so much better than I had expected. A decent bright, clear tone, a nice low action, and a decent straight neck! The intonation is spot on. The 4th string had a slight buzz on a couple of the frets due to the low action being ‘on the limit’, but this soon cleared up as it was played in and the strings have tensioned up. For the money the finish is excellent and you need to inspect it closely to find the odd blemish, but for the money no moans on the cosmetics. I bought this guitar to replace my ‘spare’ which I gave to my daughter. Was originally meant for chucking in the back of the van and generally abusing, but it has turned out to be far too good for that! I also thought the black finish was unusual and cool! Worth every penny.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHaving achieved a grade 5 in electric playing I decided to review my early interest in classical playing.Yamaha being a well known brand seemed a logical choice.I oredred this guitar as a deal which came with a top quality stand and a carry case and a tuner and spare strings wow all for under 100.00 unbelivable. For that price you might expect the quality not to be good but you would be wrong. The instrument is excellent the tone is good it never suffers fron what i would call cheap disease which is when instruments poory constructed bend and twist out of shape.I use this every day and it holds tune perfectly. The neck shape is not too wide or deep which makes it very comfrtable to hold.Only critisism which is small is that the back of the neck is not varnished or treated and looks unfinished.I used a cloth and applied two coats of tru oil (gunsmiths ) now it looks beautifull. However if you do this remember it will invalidate your warranty,so wait until the warranty expires first. All in all it is by far the best value instument I have ever purchased.Even if you cant get the deal it is well worth the price on its own.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersI was originally going to buy the C40 but my attention was taken by the reviews of the Yamaha F310. Yes the F310 is a fantastic instrument, a real beauty, but no one said how difficult it’d be to reach the other side of the guitar. I’m not that short in the arms, but I was straining to reach over to play the strings with my right hand, bruising my under arm and my fingers were getting sore. Why on earth didn’t anyone say how much smaller the C40 is compared to the F310? I was thrilled when I unpackaged the C40. This guitar is an absolute gem. I can reach over, easily and I’m not fighting to keep the guitar on my lap as it fits a treat. It makes the most beautiful sound and a further plus point is that my fingers are not suffering as they did on metal strings. The C40 has to be the nicest beginners guitar for quality and sound without breaking the bank. I thoroughly recommend it, especially, if like me, you don’t have long arms, and you want to keep some skin on your fingers. Delivery was so fast that it came before expected, and whilst packaging was pretty minimal, it was perfectly safe.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’m really pleased with my Yamaha C40, I used to play an Yamaha CG-100A years ago, so I knew what to expect from Yamaha guitars, and I wasn’t disappointed at all with my new C40. It’s good for everyone. The sound it good and the guitar is nicely made. Only comment – the bridge could have been varnished but it doesn’t affect an overall performance of the instrument. As an entry level guitar I would definitely recommend it to everyone how is looking for a nice guitar at good cost.

Golden Review Award: 50 From Our UsersI been playing since 1987, and I got one of this a few years ago as a present. I had many guitars of really good quality that cost a lot more than this, and this one is just as good. The construction is flawless, and the mast feels very good in the hands. It stays in tune, and it sounds great.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersFirst of all, I have to say I am not a very good guitar player.
I started with learning some chords and then advanced to strumming by tabs and so on.
At the moment I am trying to teach myself flamenco and it is quite a challenge.

Nevertheless, I wanted to have something above the low budget guitar segment. I found the
C40 on Amazon, read all the reviews and purchased this item.

The guitar looks very solid and noble. No unnecessary ornaments, just a plain, classical
guitar, which was exactly what I was looking for.
The sound is quite decent and full, though I probably cannot tell the difference to more
expensive ones, yet I am rather musical, which should allow me to make a judgement to a
    certain extent.
The only -albeit little- flaw would be the provided guitar strings, which are not to worsen
the guitar’s quality. The A and the D string already startet to curl up and make the strings
rattle, but I was planning on replacing them with flamenco strings anyway.

Apart from that, I can only recommend the C40. Excellent value for money!
