The frequency range is quite wide so can be used as a general low frequency instrument mic. It has good internal gain and only needs 6-9db preamp to bring it to parity for a kick. Its pickup range is less than 1m which means it’s not picking up everything else going on around. The sound is clear and undistorted with very little noise – perfect! The sound is pretty true though the EQ rolls off at around 1000khz (as you’d expect). For most live applications this is a good choice for kicks or bass amps. It’s ok for recording demo tracks.

These microphones are very well-suited to recording guitars, and I would expect many other acoustic instruments. They have a -20dB switch, which I assume is for micing drums(??).

Don’t get these for vocals – they are not meant for that.

You’ll also need to power them, so make sure you have phantom power.

Not sure yet how rugged they are, so can’t comment on that aspect.

I bought this to replace the Shure SM57 I had been using to record my acoustic guitar. My preamp isn’t adequate for using a dynamic mic, such as the SM57, for recording an acoustic guitar so I had to crank the gain, resulting in a ton of excess white noise.

This AKG P170 resolved my white noise issues. I am getting a very clean signal. Nice overall sound. Very happy with this mic.

It is an excellent mic. Unfortunately I already had a good AKG mic C1000s and was hoping that the C451 would be better for a specific job but it wasn’t. But it is a lovely mic.

We use this mic for acoustic guitars and instruments. It performs well and sounds very natural. The gain before feedback is workable in a live situation. This little mic is an excellent value for the money and it performed significantly better than I expected.

I bought this mic to use it as an overhead microphone to record gongs. It picks up the sound wonderfully and its sound is very clear! In fact it’s so sensitive I tried it near the gong and it kept on clipping even with the gain turned to almost “0” so I wouldn’t recommend it for that purpouse but it is definetely a perfect mic for recording other sound healing instruments.

Seem to be pointed at the acoustic and/or drum overhead usage but . . . . are far more versatile than that.
Bowed instruments, cello, viola, violin and even double bass works great. Even vocals!
Or as a stereo pair (mine aren’t matched, can’t tell) super results for anything.
The speedy crispness is easily tamed if required in final production. Quite universal really.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersMuy buen micrfono, a mi parecer casi no colorea el sonido.

These are very good microphones, except for the kick drum microphone. Sound quality from all the other microphones can be shaped and eqed to your whims, but they naturally sound good. Be careful though that you have proper balanced cables routed to your mixer if you cannot select phantom power individually for the mics as dynamic P4 and P2 s may damage easily from the phantom. Unbalanced cable from your P4 and P2s to a mixer that fires phantom to all inputs at once, will make you whine that the AKG mics are of inferior quality when they gradually fail when that is not so

Perfect for toms and decent on snare. Great value, although bleed rejection isn’t great so although snare positioning is super due to the size, they pick up LOTS of hat. Way more than a well positioned sm57 for example. They sound great for the money imo.

Heard this mic was just as good as studio models starting at more than triple the cost (and on up into the thousands of dollars!). So I got one to record mainly acoustic guitar for my home demos. My SM-58s do not nearly have the dynamic range to capture decent acoustic sound. The AKG 170 does the job and is perfect for home demos—for me anyway. You be the judge. I’ve also found that mic-ing up my Fender Hot Rod amp with the AKG 170 results in far superior performance than an SM-58 as well. Highly recommend this product. The AKG 170 is professional quality in construction and performance at an accessible price.

Initially bought one of these for recording acoustic guitar. Was immediately struck by how quiet it was compared to my other “entry level” mics; no self-noise appearing until you crank the gain up past 90%, even then it’s still quiet. Sound is great, and depending on the distance from your source you can get everything from intimate & direct through to big and roomy sounds – all captured faithfully.

It also works well for recording loud guitar amps. I’ve tested it side-by-side with a condenser mic (CM25 MkIII) and there’s no discernible difference in tone. The pad switch seems handy, but haven’t had to use it yet.

Was curious about stereo recording, so bought a set of matched RDE M5s, but those were comparatively pretty noisy & tinny, so returned them and bought a second P170. Even though they’re not ‘matched’ there’s no obvious difference in output or tone (bought 5 months apart) – and they work fantastically on a stereo bar in standard stereo configurations.

They’re very slim, quite long, and feel quite sturdy and high-quality. The mount provided fits well, but you could probably knock it out accidentally with little force.

Overall, very impressed with these mics.

I use this to record acoustic guitar along with another small diaphragm mic. (One at the sound hole. One over the guitar shoulder to catch overtones.) Excellent results. I’m really impressed considering the cost. Check out the ton of YouTube reviews. It’s hard to find anyone who says anything bad about this mic.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have the D112 and the Shure Beta. Both are built like tanks and work well for bass guitars, kick drums, and other very low-end applications. Study the curves for the frequencies these mikes will handle, because they differ. The Beta yields a smoother sound, whereas the D112 has more punch. I have a D112 mounted inside a 24″ kick drum, just about 4″ from the batter head. It sounds great. Generally among the handful of other drummers or engineers I know, the D112 is preferred on the kick for rock or country applications.

AKG has always seemed to provide a better mic than the price would indicate and here is no exception. I bought this mic as a multi purpose unit for our church. I use it for crowd micing during hymns, organ micing and occasional guitar micing.

The pattern provides a very feedback resistant output even with gains cranked higher than normal. When I need another condensor I won’t hesitate to order another.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from the P170. As far as small diaphragm condenser mics go, I’ve had a bunch of the usual suspects and have always liked the concept more than the microphones. Even the Rode NT5, which is a fantastic microphone got sold on. I might keep this P170. For what I paid for it, this mic will fill a niche requirement in my project studio and every time I look at it I won’t be reminded of money sitting unused as I was when I chose something other than the NT5. This P170 was bought on a Black Friday deal and wound up being half the price of my dearly departed Rode. The P170 isn’t a better mic than the NT5; it’s different though and with the quality it brings to my instrumental recordings, it could be the bargain I need for that every-now-and-again recording. Four stars well earned. If it was a C451B it would have been a five star review but I cannot afford a C451B for occasional recordings. Thanks to Amazon for a fast and fabulous deal.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve only used this mic for about 10 minutes now, but I have to say that I am blown away by the sound quality, especially for the price that AKG is selling them for! It sounds sooooo good on acoustic guitar that I actually had to stop playing and rave about it! It has a wonderful frequency response and transient response for acoustic guitar that brings out the natural beauty of the instrument without coloring the tone too much. I can’t stress enough how impressed I am that AKG can make a mic that has this level of sound quality at the price tag they are selling it for. If ur looking for a good small diaphragm condenser for acoustic guitar and have a somewhat tight budget, get this microphone. U won’t be disappointed u did.

This is used in a home studio to mike up an acoustic guitar and gives a lovely crisp sound with a bit of eq’ from the mixer. It would be even better if I could prevent the guitar spilling over into the vocal mike, but that’s my problem, I’m well pleased with it.
