Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersNew to music making, wanted a keyboard with 16 rgb sensitivity pads, with more than 25 piano keys like with my Akai MPK mini II.

PROs: Great beginner controller with lots of features built into a slim layout. Knobs feel great. Still haven’t figured out how to utilize the assignable buttons appropriately so I know this controller is capable of more than I realize.

CONs: Pads aren’t as sensitive when being played, and don’t hold up with use well – sticking and don’t hit as loud. I realized this is because it is a cheaper model with cheaper material. You always get what you pay for.

Brought this for my son, his main gripe was that it didn’t come with a separate power supply, however he seems to like it so far, build quality seems good, would like a better instruction bookle

I’ve had this keyboard for 6 months now. All in all, setting it up could have been easier. The application that Alesis provides could be cleaner and there could be more instructions of online tutorials on how to use or assign the plenty buttons, knobs, and other buttons that just are sitting as display on plenty of users’ keyboards. Drum pads are alright, nothing too fancy. For what I got it should have costed less, but nonetheless I have it now and once I learn how to use it with its quirks I don’t think I’ll regret it.

I HIGHLY recommend saving 80$ and buying this other version: https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-V61-Keyboard-Controller-Buttons/dp/B00IWWHIUI/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=alesis+v61&qid=1578104931&sr=8-1

Perfect product. I used to have the 25 key so I upgraded to this one because I liked the brand. Nice design. No real drawbacks other than the fact the drum pads are a bit sensitive so if it isn’t on an even surface it’s easy to mistakenly trigger pads

Excellent quality. Rugged build. Keys are very nice as well as pads. However I didn’t like how hard I had to press down keys. Too much spring returning back against fingers.

Works well, interfaces nicely with Logic, Reason, Ableton and Maschine. Pro Tools is a bit harder, but then again Pro Tools is always weird about USB instruments. Solid quality, keys feel good, pads work well, knobs and buttons function properly. I dig it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis product seems good. I gotta say, it isn’t like playing a piano. But it appears well-made and I had a lot of fun with it and my DAW program. It’s a bit odd to me how these MIDI-associated products don’t really come with instructions and you have to search youtube for explanations… but there’s lots out there, so that’s okay. I haven’t yet experienced the advantage of the pads over just using the keys, but I can see that it is better for percussion recording if more experienced users say that, which they do.

Having owned a bunch of midi controllers I am extremely impressed with my VI49. The feel on the semi weighted keys is really nice. The knobs and the modulation/pitch bend wheel feel nice and heavy, and I feel in control. There are better pads out there, but these work well, and I am now fully used to them and can blast away.

I have played some older lines of the same model, and the one I just bought is better somehow.

All in all a fantastic piece of kit for such a modest amount of money.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI bought this Vi61 to replace an ageing Alesis QX keyboard. I’ve had it a week but so far all is well and I’m very happy. On turn on it was immediately recognised by Windows 10 so it’s plug and play without problem. Fit and finish is pretty much perfect and all the buttons, pads and knobs are functioning as they should. The knobs have a nice weight to them, the switches are a hard plastic, perhaps not the best quality but they work. My reason for choosing this keyboard was to gain more tactile control over the most used functions in my DAW, in front of which I spend my working days. Reviews had already assured me that the semi weighted action was OK and indeed it is for a 61 key controller at this price point.
I’ve spent some time already using the editor program to make changes I want. The editor program itself is not well written, somewhat unfriendly and confusing. Each time you start it you have to re-choose your device midi in and out for some reason. There is no file drag and drop, Neither is there any visual feedback on the keyboard display when sending or receiving to the program. It’s not nice to use at all. However it is versatile enough and you can make all the changes you need. Once all is finally setup as you want, you’ll probably not use it again so it’s no big deal. You can save setups to disc, and to any any of the keyboard’s 24 on-board presets. I shall most likely only ever use one or two.
For midi, each switch can be changed to either toggle, momentary or program change control, each knob to controller or aftertouch and each drum pad to note, toggle, momentary and program change controllers. You can choose from 8 keyboard velocity curves and if needed the keyboard can be split into zones. The transport controllers come set as you’d expect to momentary, but can be changed to toggle if wanted. The mod and pitch bend wheels’ midi channels can also be changed as can the sustain pedal. I will not use the gimicky drum roll function (which can also be edited). Overall I’m really pleased with control available.
The drum pads light up, 3 different colours according to how hard you hit them (completely unnecessary but some may like it)! The preset window, all the switches and tops of the knobs, and even the mod and pitch wheels light up blue, which is a great visual aid in a dark room. Out of the box, and value for money wise, I think this is an excellent controller keyboard. The keyboard action is better than my old device and I can see myself using this for years to come. I’ll amend my review if anything nasty pops up over time, but so far I’d say if the specs fit your needs, buy without hesitation 🙂

If you need a great feeling piano with a lot of bells and whistles to control your DAW without even having to touch your mouse? This is pretty much for you.

All the buttons feel great, and responsive, the lights and colors show you exactly what you’re doing, and overall it’s a great piece of technology. It’s well worth the price.

If you’re comparing between this one and the regular V49, and want more control, get this one.

I am only just learning MIDI devices and playing the keyboard, but so far this has really been a great, fun investment. The only thing I find weird is the middle c and d keys lag during first couple of strokes after just being turned on, but then they clear up and it works fine the rest of the time.
Also, customer service is responsive and very helpful.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersThe build quality seems good, and I love the look and feel of the keyboard. It makes a nice addition to my setup. However, I had big plans for it and it ended up not being able to deliver on everything I wanted to use it for.

First of all, you cannot program the pad colors in any useful way. Many product shots seem to show the pads with what looks like individual color assignments that could be used to map them to parts of a song visually, but this is just not possible currently as far as I can tell. The pads only light up and change color according to how hard you press, and I think that’s it.

Second, the toggle buttons (or switches). There are a lot of them, which is really cool. But there’s no way to set their initial state. You can’t load up a song or an instrument preset or whatever and have the right toggles already turned on. The lights on the buttons can’t be externally controlled as far as I can tell, they start off and they turn on the first time you press them, period.

I’ve tried to contact Alesis support to find out if there is any way to remotely program them or toggle the initial state using CC or sysex messages, but they never got back to me.

So what it comes down to, is I hardly make use of the pads because I have better ones that I can visually map, and I don’t ever use the myriad of toggle buttons because it doesn’t make sense to always have their initial state be “off”.

The buttons feel nice and clicky, however. And the knobs have quite a bit of resistance, making them feel very good (although it can actually be kind of difficult to make quick and large adjustments to the knobs because the resistance is so much higher than my other keyboards). The keybed feels great. The keys are slightly weighted and feel substantial, but still quite easy to press.

The pads feel decent. They are about 50 times better than my AKAI MPK49 pads, which are terrible. But they are not as good as the pads on my Nektar LX25+, nor are they even in the same ballpark as the pads on my Launchpad Pro or my Maschine.

I had read up a bit more for my next purchase and opted for the V125. Glad I did. As a music hobbyist it fits in well with my requirements. Full size piano keys as I am use to, programmable controllers, very good build quality and upto date drivers for my MAC. Plugged in and set off.

I returned the 25 key version and then purchased the version with 49 keys…great decision for only a few extra bucks. This really is a great tool, easy to setup, and use. Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersIt has taken a bit of time to figure this thing out. It doesn’t play like my other Alesis keyboards do, it is hard to describe but there is a strange feel to them at first.

The software is a pain to learn, I still have yet really figured out how to record a song on it. For the last 25 years I have worked on computers for people as I am in IT, this software seems harder to learn than Adobe products but I think it is just a naming terminology of the stuff the program will do that I just don’t know what they mean.

I also own a MPC Pro and they software from them seems easier. I am hoping that when Ableton 10 is released for it that it will be easier. I did buy the Air “AIEP 3” and while I like some of it the rest of it is not very good. I do like most of the instruments that are natrual instruments. My MPC Studio Pro came with sounds that I think were a bit better though.

Overall after a few months I do like it, at first though I thought I had made a mistake, I still don’t know what I am doing in the software though. I can still play my music and such so it is all good, just wish I had more time to figure out the composing and recording in the software.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis works. It needs patience to set up just like most MIDI controllers, integrates with Ableton well, but I prefer to use something different. Worth considering if you need something like this. I was glad I bought this instead of the 25 key version, the keys have great feel and I feel encouraged to use this just by the design and feel. Depending on your hands and fingers, you might need to adjust the sensitivity of the percussion pads to suit your own needs.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersI waited a week to try things out and give an tried and tested review.

    * Build Quality
I was really impressed by the solid way in which the Vi61 was built. The case is sturdy, the knobs and buttons have a solid feel, with just enough resistance on the knobs to make transitions smooth. And the handy digital readout allows you to see exactly where you put the dial.
The two wheels to the top left are really nice to the touch, with a lovely, grippy, rubberised finish to them. Both feel smooth and the pitch bend has a nice resistance to it.
The 16 – yes count ’em 16 – pads on the left are much more sensitive than I thought they would be. The lights flash different colours to express how firm you are hitting the pads, which is useful. But even with the softest of taps you can trigger a sample or drum /high hat etc.

    * Keys
The keys are the size of piano keys, not typical synth keys. This means more room to be creative and less chance of hitting two unintended keys at once. For those used to the synth keys, don’t worry, you’ll get used to it real quick.
The keys are semi-weighted, which means, rather than press the keys you push the keys, like you would a piano. The keys push back a little and you can get extremely expressive sounds from the velocity sensitive aspect.

    * Performance & Integration
This keyboard is plug and play, straight out of the box….but….obvious things like ensuring your DAW (music program) knows that you’ve plugged your new kit in almost go without saying, but to really get the most from this MIDI controller, you need to set it up with your DAW. There’s a simple set of instructions on the Alesis website (didn’t know if I could link) and you can ensure that your knobs and buttons are interacting with your VSTs (instruments).

I’m using Presonus Studio One and everything interacts well.

    * In Conclusion
I cannot think of one thing I don’t like about this MIDI controller. The build, feel, ease of use and overall performance make this a no-brainer, especially in this price bracket.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersSo basically this is the sexiest midi controller I have used that is anywhere near this price range. the control options alone on a kerboard this size is impressive. as far as control inputs go this is one of the smoothest pieces of gear a bedroom producer could hope for.

the keys are semi-weighted and a delight to use. they feel a whole lot more expensive than they are. you dont get that cheap springyness feeling.

the pads are large and responsive. of course this all can be modified in the software which is also fantastic. the ONLY qualm i have at all is the buttons under the knobs have a hard somewhat cheaper feeling click to them. it would be nice if they engadged a little softer and not so abruptly.

anywho this is a for sure buy if you have the dead benji’s and want to be the ONE…(two, three, four…) and get all Mr. Anderson on some (keanu) Peanu Keeves. Punstable Punderpants

Bought this for my husband for his birthday and this is his review: Received this as a gift and I had selected it previously on my wish list. I’m not disappointed. I used to have a 61 key Yamaha keyboard and wanted to re-learn what I had learned in the past and add to some guitar and band recordings that I’d made using Garageband–this 49 key Alesis does the job nicely and the feel of the keys is nice too as they feel closer to playing a real piano. I still have much to learn and while it’s nice that Ableton Live 9 was supplied with it, I find it much easier to use Garageband which I’ve played around with since 2007 on an off. But the sounds and effects on both programs are great and I’m looking forward playing as often as I can. It would be nice if they included a power supply with it as well, but given the affordable price not really worth complaining about and of course it powers up fine using the USB line included.

The pads are not as responsive as i would have liked and they offer an inconsistent amount of sensitivity between them. Had to return because sometimes a key would get stuck on forcing me to restart my DAW which would have made it unplayable in a live setting. However Im not sure if the problem was within the controller or my DAW/computer so I still give this 4 stars since everything else about this is still good for its price.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersWhat can I say; I’ve owned many master keyboards and none of them have been any good, especially when it comes to the key bed. This one however has excellent action for the price with good solid keys, whilst still remaining light and portable. It has software that allows you to map the many controls available, allowing it to do everything a more expensive controller can do. And it has after-touch, a rarity at this price point.

I have yet to come across any negatives, except I wish there was an 88 key hammer action version. But I expect that would be more expensive. It’s USB MIDI was plug and play with Windows 10 and I haven’t experienced any drop outs.

All in all for the price I don’t think you’ll find a better controller. Highly recommended.

I like it. Makes composing easy. Simply connect the usb power cord and the midi cord and you are ready to go. Looks pretty cool too as well as being functional. I am not a pianist so I can’t really comment on the keys other than to say they are more weighted than a plastic key on may many synths. In other words… the keys had a nice feel and felt “semi-weighted.”

This midi controller is phenomenal, and i’ve owned and been around many different types though music production schools and recording studios. Pads are a bit stiff which causes a little fingertip pain, so don’t expect soft pads like your MPC. The pads on the mpc 2000 are much more jelly like and soft. The lights for velocity were pretty cool, and the keys felt great. Halfway between weighted and non weighted. My box came a little banged up, so I had to return it because I didn’t want to risk it. I wish it had a dim feature on the bright blue LED display also. I got a lot of compliments on this controller at Fullsail.

Top.

Golden Review Award: 120 From Our UsersThis is a day one review. If however I find any cons, I’ll add them later. As of now, this keyboard is FANTASTIC to say the least. Great feeling keys, nice and bright backlights, and solid yet smooth mod and pitch wheels. As for the wheels, they’ve got medium resistance with little to no inertia. Feels amazing when soloing.

My biggest concern was the 25 key limit. As I’m working on a budget, I couldn’t afford the 49 key, and the 61 would be too big for my desk. It was either the V49 or VI25 for me. I am SO glad I went with the VI series. If you’re wondering if 25 keys is enough, ask yourself this question: what am I going to be playing? If you’re just using it to put in simple chords into your DAW, this’ll work great. As I already mentioned, soloing is what this thing is designed for. I’ve included a short video demonstrating a solo that requires the use of multiple octaves, to give you a good impression what it’ll look and feel like switching between them. Sorry in advance for the quality, I was using my webcam as the camera and mic.

As for the drum pad, the buttons are very sensitive. Good detection, and it’s cool that you can trigger them just by pressing, not striking. This is where my only “con” is. If you’re getting into your music while using the pitch and/or mod wheel, it’s quite easy to trigger the pads and screw up your sound. I hope there is a setting within the Alesis software that I’m unaware of that will fix this. If not, it’ll be something I just get used to. Either way, not really a con, just a heads up.

The nobs and buttons can all be mapped to various functions within your favorite DAW. I’m using Mixcraft 7 Pro Studios and everything seems to work wonderfully. That is, after I configured the play, stop, loop, etc. buttons.

Aftertouch is an amazing feature. For those who don’t know, aftertouch is the ability to press into key after it’s been struck and at it’s lowest point. This can trigger different effects to your favorite synths. Think of it like 3D Touch for your keyboard. It’s cool, but I haven’t used it much.

I am VERY pleased with this product and am glad I bought it. If you’re on the fence and have the money, get it.

    **Update**
After using this product for over two years, my only issue is the USB port. As I was playing, if the cable was moved slightly, it’d stop sending midi data to my DAW. At first I thought (and hoped) it was a bad cable, but I was wrong. I put up with it for a while, but it seemed to get worse. I was about ready to purchase a new, different controller. As a last resort, I took it apart to look for any problems. After examining the port, I found three out of the six solder points were separated very slightly. After a few minutes of soldering and hot gluing, I finally have it back to it’s original functionality.
While I still love this controller, this issue reflects poorly on the build quality and longevity of this product. If you’re not a geek like me, you’d be spending $100+ on a new controller.

Without a doubt this thing is great for the money, but don’t expect it to last forever. 🙂

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersShort review about the keyboard – be aware that it does ship completely unmapped, which is great for many reasons, but don’t expect plug and play in the traditional sense. Also if you’re an idiot (like me) be aware that the dimension length of 62.5cm is the actual keyboard length. The entire product is somewhat larger. Great feel to the thing. It’s brilliant. Buy it

On the seller – these dudes were brilliant. DPD lost my first keyboard, and as soon as I mentioned it another was posted next day delivery, with a nice comment to dpd to try not to lose this one. Will buy from them again if I ever need anything. Thumbs up to them.

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersI got this to use with Ableton Live, but I didn’t want the “8 track launchers with faders” layout that so many keyboards have right now. The huge bank of 36 buttons really helps with what I need in my setup.

So far (after a day of use) everything is great. But I will note a few quirks:

    1) Dimensions are listed incorrectly – Description says something like 24″ wide. I got this for a travel gig so I was concerned about size. The actual dimensions are 33.75″ long, by 10″ wide (power switch sticks out by 1/4″), by just under 3″ tall including feet and knobs.

    2) There was a strip of adhesive plastic across all the keys – A nice feature to protect them in shipping… But I felt I was going to yank all the keys out of alignment unless I took extreme care. Perhaps warming it with a hair dryer would have helped.

    3) The free editor software works, BUT, you really have to make sure certain options are selected in order for it to communicate with the keyboard. This took me two hours to figure out. Options -> Device Setup will open a menu for connecting to the device. See attached screenshot. Before you try to Send or Get a preset to/from the connected keyboard, open this and select VI49 EDITOR Out and VI49EDITOR In and click Apply. You might even have to do this every single time, it seems to forget easily. At first I felt like this dialog does nothing at all but it makes all the difference when you get the MIDI Communication error. It did not work for me to just select VI49 Out and VI49 In, it has to be the “EDITOR” option for sending and receiving presets.

So far so good - A couple tiny quirks

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersIf you like stuff, this things is a stuff that you’ll enjoy. No extra stuff that you don’t need. The object is nice looking and can handle a nuclear explosion; as long as it no where near the blast. I could smash it with a sledge hammer and it would definitely be ruined. It has nice keyboard sensitivity and does everything its supposed to do. If it is not plugged into your computer or your computer is turned off, it will probably not work. If you do not know how to make or play music, this might not be the thing you want. Unless of course you plan on learning how to make or play music…. then I guess you might enjoy this…. unless you don’t have a computer of some type… because it is a midi controller… The world is a confusing place, unless you delude yourself well enough to have it all figured out. You can not tear this keyboard open and fix it yourself after you’ve broken it because you are not very handy. Get better at life.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersSo I upgraded from the Arturia Minilab, which broke on me in about over a year. The USB port kept pushing in. Arturia offered me no help, saying I would have to pay, but took weeks to even reply to ONE email or response. So I threw it out and just bought a new keyboard, but one that would LAST. I didn’t know the quality of MIDI’s actually mattered. So I looked up good quality MIDI’s and choose this one. I love it. It’s solid. The keys are solid. Buttons are solid. The build is solid. I love the color MPC buttons, the screen and all. 5/5.

    Setting up with FL STUDIO:
So I finally figured it out after looking all around the internet, Youtube videos, asking people who posted the videos, etc. I’m using the Vi25.

    Presets:

    Rew CC: 114
    FF CC: 115
    Stop CC: 116
    Play CC: 117
Loop CC (you’re using FL unused)
    Rec CC: 118

Now, what happened to me was a “Midi communication unsuccessful. Verify MIDI connection and device settings. Verify no other applications are using the MIDI port”.

I couldn’t figure out HOW to fix it. I closed out FL Studio, the editor, restarted my PC, restarted my life, smashed my keyboard over my head, nothing worked. What you have to do is go to Options > Device Setup. Choose The V125 (Or your keyboard) as the input/output and hit “Apply”. NOW send the present to your keyboard. It should work.

When you open up FL Studio, you choose your IN/OUT on the MIDI and Oxygen 25 as the controller.

NOW, hit play/pause/FF/RW and it should work.

For the knobs, you just left click > override generic link > Turn the knob you want it to be controlled with.

I HOPE THIS HAS HELPED EVERYONE. If I left anything out, let me know.
