Amazon Basics 23-Inch (58 cm) Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel

Safe travels

Whether it’s an adorable Yorkie or a graceful tabby, conveniently get your furry friend from point A to point B with this Amazon Basics pet kennel. Designed to keep your pet safe, secure, and comfortable when travelling, the 23-inch (58 cm) kennel works well for anything from trips to the dog park or hiking trails to routine visits to the vet.

Smart 2-door design

Thoughtfully designed, the pet kennel features two doors, one in the front and one on the top, which means twice as many options compared to most kennels for getting little fluffy calmly into her kennel. Easy entry helps promote a less stressful experience – for both you and your pet.

Convenient features

For added convenience, the top door can be opened to the left or right. Simply pull one of the two black handles forward to release, then lift and swing to the side to open the door. The door on the front of the kennel features a spring-loaded latch. Pinching together the top and bottom levers of the latch and pulling forward allows the door to gently swing open.

Heavy-duty design

Made of durable plastic with a steel-wire front door, the Amazon Basics two-door top-load pet kennel offers strength, security, and visibility, along with plenty of ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the kennel.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersJust picked up a rescue cat in this carrier .
Popped her in the top load door ,let her out through the ( steel ) front gate . Perfect!
Fairly flimsy material , but after bolting two halves together with 6X M6 bolts ,it is very sturdy.

We bought two of these for our kittens. They were easily put together and seem very sturdy. They open from the top or front for easy access. They make trips to the vet/cattery very easy.

I have a larger cat and this carrier is perfect for him he has space to move in it and the top coming off is so much better than trying to get him in and out of the small doo

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI find that smaller carriers can sometimes make my cats stressed, but this one here is amazing! It’s on the bigger side though so I’d take that into account. My ragdoll is quite big and this is perfect for him!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really comfortable for the cats!

Really good, strong and sturdy, lots of space, definitely on the larger side of cat carriers. Has screws to keep it together, can easily dismantle for cleaning. Has two openings, both strong and useful. Highly recommend.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersA good quality top loading cat or small pet carrier. Actually large enough for a puppy or small dog too. There are small nuts and bolts that secure the top half to the bottom, extra to the plastic clips. These are not necessary but provide extra reassurance. The nuts and bolts are fiddly to get secured, one I had to insert upside down. The top opener is large and makes it easy to get the cat in. The front strong metal door took me a short while to figure out, but is effective and actually also easy to open to let the cat out. All in all a good cat carrier, very pleased.

It does seem a little flimsy but it should be fine as it’s for my cats which aren’t too heavy. I like that it opens from the top as well as the normal gate on the front.

This is a good sturdy product and easy to assemble. It will hold a puppy or small to medium dog or a large cat which my one is . She is over 5kg and is very comfortable in this box. It can hold an animal up to 9kg. There is a top panel you can open as well as the metal door on the front. Good value for money and delivery was super quick

This is a smaller cat carrier just about adequate for mine. It went together fairly easily but needed screws to secure, most were missing. I used cable ties instead, much easier to remove and replace if you need to dismantle the carrier to get your cat out at the vets. Leaving it with the top door open and a fleecy lining, it was actually sufficiently attractive to Madam that she slept in i

Read previous reviews and was prepared to lose my temper but no, once I got the hang of it assembly was easy. My cat is large and argumentative, top opening suited him perfectly. Because of his weight I wouldn’t trust carrying by the handle. I bought medium and there’s plenty of room. Good value for money.

Bought this for our new rescue kitty who is 9 months old and already over 5kg. It’s got lots of space inside for him and I like that he can go in via the top door so much easier to get him into it. It comes with bolts to attach it together but can be taken apart for storage when not in use. It’s easy to assemble too. Happy with this. Looks good too.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersAssemblance was but we got there at the end. I have attached a clip for a little tip for doing the nuts and screws, as it was hard to do to be frank. For the door just focus on the left one and getting that in, and then hold down the handles on the door and it’ll fit easily in the other side! This carrier is amazing! So far for me atleast!- I had no trouble with it, i put my two guinea pigs in it to test it out for the new comer (Loki the Ragdoll) and it can easily hold them! Ben and ren were quite amused when i was taking them up and down the stairs! For their reward i gave them both a carrot afterwards, would totally reccomend! 10/10

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA little small to be honest, if I didn’t need it quickly, I would return and get the bigger size. My cat/kitten is 2.7kg and tbh I’d have purchased something a little bigger.

Other than that it’s ok. The top loading mechanism is designed a little awkward but as mentioned this will do the job for now. I put a blanket inside as well so should be comfy for the upcoming trip to the vets. Overall 3.5 -4 *

These are good quality and you can load from the top, which is the main reason I bought it! I have an 8 month old ginger cat, slightly on the chubby size, but the small carrier was a bit too small and the large one is absolutely huge!!! I feel a size in between would be perfect for most cats, shame!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought this for my Ragdoll kittens. Knowing that the breed can grow quite large I was looking for a slightly bigger and very sturdy carrier that I could continue to use as they grow. It fits both kittens in at the minute as they’re still small but as they grow it will be the ideal size for one at a time. The only thing that I’m unsure about is the black plastic opening lever used for opening the top section – I’ve seen in a couple of other reviews the plastic bit has snapped off, it would be much more robust if they were metal. It’s the only part of the carrier I feel could be improved and time will tell how long it will last. That said the top opening is much more convenient for getting the cats in and out of the carrier rather than the front opening. Overall very happy with this carrier.

Ordered to fit a 10 week old Jack Russell in to go to the vets and also to use to get used to the car. He can stand, turn and lay down. It’s not his crate he uses overnight as I’d say it’s too small for that. I know it won’t last as he grows but for the visiting now it’s ideal to manage. Built on delivery as in parts, was easy to complete and the bolts fitted properly and it’s secure. The door is a maximum security prison double lock door, brilliant from others I’ve seen. This is metal not a tiny bit of plastic. The top opening is more of a phaff to open n close but can be done.
    Thank you

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersBought this in the larger size for my cat who gets stressed out going into normal carriers when going the vet. This item in the 23″ size would easily fit a small dog to be honest, but with a blanket inside, gave my cat enough room to move around without feeling cramped.
Relatively easy to put together, only fiddly thing was screwing the top onto the bottom as the nuts and bolts are quite small, so would be difficult for anyone with problems with their fingers or large hands.
I like that this has a front loading door on a spring release, a top loading door and the whole of the top of the carrier comes off completely.
I would say that you could easily fit two fully grown cats in this together.
The only down side is the top loading door as this releases on two springs and rather than the door lifting up, it comes off completely so could be troublesome to fit back on once the cat is inside without having to hold them down inside the carrier first.

Nice big carrier for my 6.6Kg cat. Putting this together was easy but the screws were going to be awkward because you need to tighten the nut, but there was no room to do it! Solved this problem by using small zip ties. There is also the normal clips you use to connect top and bottom, and if you were transporting small cat it probably would be sufficient. However, my cats are fairly large so I figured the extra security would be safer, hence the zip ties. So why not 5 stars? Well I haven’t had to use it since I got it, so it’s not been tested!

I like the opening top as it so easy to get the cats in and out. I leave them out all the time so the cats are used to them. They were very settled in them as they look snug but this suits cats when travelling and the vet said they were perfect for them.

Make sure you get the nut on the bolt the right way or they get stuck!

  24. Katie Wickens says:

I disliked how difficult it is to assemble. In the picture I decided to put the screws in upside down than the bolts at the top and that was fine. For obvious reasons the top lid is never going to be opened. I decided to cat proof a carrier for a 7kg cat with the screw type fastener and he gave up without a fight. I only put one on and used the rest of the screws and bolts supplied. I got 6. He stayed put. I had to get 2 cats to the vet in a car. I found the carrier’s fine for me and I had the larger ones. I do feel it is a lottery as some came with parts missing and some were faulty but mine were fine. One last thing, the instructions are useless to try and assemble. I should on looked on Youtube to find a solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lottery if you get a good one or bad one

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve just ordered my second one of these as they are so great! I have two rabbits and when it’s time to go to the vets, I have a bit of a battle on my hands. Most carriers just have a front opening so it can be really hard to manoeuvre our furry friends inside. I was resorting to hiding treats inside but they soon caught on to that!
With this carrier having a top door, you can pick up the bunnies and gently lower them in. It’s also great in the car as you can open the top and reassure them.
The carriers are very sturdy, even with heavier animals. One of mine weights 4kg and the other 2.75kg and it manages both with no issues.
The floor can be a bit slippy though so I put a non slip mat inside so that they have traction.
The door is made of metal so it cannot be chewed.

This carrier comes in two sizes. It’s a shame the smaller one is significantly lower in height as I feel there needs to be an inbetween size. The small is too small for one of my bunnies, but the large is a little too large. Not a major issue though, better to get one with more space than one that is too small.

I did order one from Amazon Warehouse that was supposed to be good as new. However it arrived without original packaging and had fur / urine stains on it. This was sent back and I’ve ordered a brand new one.

I would highly recommend this carried. Although there are cheaper ones on the market, considering it’s functionality, I’m happy to pay the extra to have a carrier that’s easier to use.

Use this as a travel crate in the car for my chihuahua. Have not carried it with the dog inside so cannot comment on the security of the top under load. This is the second of these I have purchased ( we have several dogs!) which must show how good i consider the carrier to be. Does everything I need for a very reasonable price.

Does what it says. You can pop the cat in via the top or the front. It all holds together well. Great for domestic use, but not a flight case.

My cat hate cages. It often took two persons to collaborate together to put her into a cage with four little lockers. I chose this one because it could allow me to lock it with one hand. It’s a good purchase because I put my cat into the cage quickly without any help.

Spent a long while looking at these types of crates in shops and online, reading poor reviews.
Almost in desperation bought this one.

Impressed, great price and good construction. It does have some plastic clips to hold both halves in place, but it also has good old fashioned nuts and bolts making it really secure.

Very pleased and almost half the price of the one I nearly bought.

    Would certainly recommend.

This is a lovely sturdy cat carrier. So easy to assemble and it came with all the necessary parts including the screws and bolts. Just follow the instructions step by step in the instruction booklet and it will only take a few minutes to assemble. I like the fact that you can load your cat in via the front door or gently lower your cat in and lift out via the roof. I’ve not used it yet but I feel confident my cat will be safe and secure during transportation in this cat carrier.

I broke my last one and thought this cat carrier would be a bit easier to use with the top access rather than me fichting to get her in via the front door. It was a little easier to get her in it and she jumped straight out when I opened the top and front. Its hard plastic so its what you would expect. Works as any other carrier if you don’t want to use the top. Our cat still doesn’t like it but its most likely because she knows she is off to have a fight with the vet!

  36. Julia Sagar says:

We had cases that you could remove the top 1/2 completely, but we actually prefer this design having a a hatch on the top to get to the bunny. It’s also massive so more than enough space for big cat or rabbit. Maybe not quite a Flemish giant tho

I read other reviews and wondered if I would struggle to assemble the carrier. It was a bit fiddly, but easier than I anticipated, once assembled it felt secure. I like the top opening. There are two little handles on top if you wanted to use a shoulder strap. This is not supplied. One of the side clips had not been attached properly, I managed to push it through. I bought the bigger sized carrier. My kitten sleeps in it.

Very good value, easy to assembled & seems sturdy. One issue that might prove worrying is the carry handle/lid. When I lift the box empty the handle & lid flex upwards. Hoping this won’t be a problem with a full sliced ‘Matey Boy Bengal’ in it! Knowing Amazon’s reliability I suspect I may be worrying unessascarily…he’s at the vets tomorrow so we’ll find out!. All in all better than a lot of more expensive ones out there.

This is the second one I have (I have lots of cats so need more than one) and these are good as they give the option of too loading as well as the front.
I understand when some people say that the lid doesn’t seem safe but if you look at the actual mechanism, it has to be pulled to open the lid and you can’t pull it when holding the handle, so this won’t happen…it would be nice to have a clip on the lid just for piece of mind.

A very good size for the price. Very handy for carrying two mini lop rabbits at the same time.

The build quality was a bit hit and miss in places. Some of the pre-drilled holes for the screws are not properly aligned, so it was a bit trickier than it should have been to assemble.

I bought this cat carrier as my cat has an appointment with the vet in a couple of days and I realized he is too big for the old carrier. He came from a cat sanctuary, he had PTSD trapped as a stray with a damaged leg. So my boy is very nervy. I read all the reviews and as always , swings and roundabouts. You would never buy a thing of you didn’t weight it all up yourself. Oh I should say I had a time limit so needed Prime only. This carrier comes in two halves with a separate door. There are four snap clips attaching bottom to top and if there were not six nuts and bolts the clips would not work too flimsy. It is roomy smart looking and airy. The other issue is the top access to put a very chilled cat in I guess? I knew this was an issue when I bought it and I intend to use a leather strap around the middle you can’t be too careful. I would have paid more for something else but more carriers come in the small size than larger. Some reviews had issues with the carrying handle but mine seems fine.
