Live 1969
Elvis Presley’s comeback of the late 1960s is often reduced to his spectacular reemergence in 1968, an event designed for a mass audience watching at home on television. That NBC special from December 1968 certainly earned the attention of an audience who hadn’t paid attention to Elvis in years, but in many ways, Elvis’ real comeback didn’t happen until 1969.
During 1969, he recorded a series of sessions with producer Chips Moman in American Sound Studio, music that put him firmly at the crossroads of contemporary pop, rock, soul, and country while also reviving his commercial fortunes. Just as importantly, Elvis didn’t limit his comeback to the studio: he performed on-stage for the first time in eight years.

Excellentes performances pleines d’nergie. Par contre, ce coffret est pour les fans qui auraient assist tous ces concerts s’ils en avaient eu l’occasion ou encore qui aiment dtecter les nuances. Pour les autres, l’album Elvis in Person at the International Hotel, Las Vegas est une excellente option.
Wonderful recordings of eleven live concerts. The size and booklet are nice with great pictures of the king in the beginning (and the best) years of his reign in Vegas. Although, a bit pricy, I got a good deal with a damaged box (which I repaired to my satisfaction).

Actuaciones geniales, con sonido espectacular y un Elvis pletrico. Libro detallado y muy interesante. Al ser las fechas de los conciertos tan seguidas el repertorio es muy parecido entre los diferentes conciertos, pero son una autntica maravilla. SUPERCONTENTO de ampliar las actuaciones en ese ao l!!!!! Como siempre Elvis BRUTAL.

I’m a huge fan of Elvis and his music. I’m glad I have these recordings from his inaugural return to the Las Vegas stage, but there is a lot of repetition in the material (including the jokes) with only one or two different songs in each set.
If you’re not as big a fan of Elvis as I am, I’d recommend saving time and money by purchasing Elvis: In Person At The International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Les fans d’Elvis sont trs nombreux travers le monde et ils ne pourront que se rjouir de voir ce coffret sortir: les concerts donns par Elvis en 1969 l’International Hotel de Las Vegas, lors de l’inauguration de cet htel de luxe. Aprs presque une dcennie sans se produire en public, se consacrant au cinma (et peu de russites artistiques marquantes), Elvis revenait sur le devant de la scne en 1968 avec le fantastique NBC show. A partir de l il n’allait plus cesser de tourner aux Etats-Unis jusqu’ sa mort. Cette srie de concerts qui doivent le remettre sur piste est finement orchestre par le Colonel Parker, grand coup de publicit et d’invitations de vedettes comme Henry Mancini ou Fats Domino. Elvis ne s’est produit Vegas qu’en 1956 et il en gardait un souvenir mitig, face un public trs majoritairement adulte qui n’apprciait que peu sa musique “sauvage”. Mme si Las Vegas n’est pas la ville prototype du rock’n’roll, le public pas le plus bouillant du monde, ces concerts permettent au King de reprendre sa couronne et son got pour la scne: il y prend beaucoup de plaisir et a s’entend ses nombreux clats de rire! Il est entour d’excellents musiciens (le trs bon James Burton la guitare, Jerry Scheff la basse, des cuivres brillants, les churs des Sweet Inspirations mens par Cissy Houston, la mre de Whitney…), le “TCB Band” (pour Taking Care of Business) capable de jouer tous les styles. Du coup, ces concerts sont plein d’nergie, d’humour et d’motion. La musique a beaucoup chang en 10 ans, le temps a pass depuis ses dbuts (un peu plus de 10 ans mais c’tait une ternit l’poque!) ,Elvis l’a parfaitement compris en reprenant par exemple Yesterday et Hey Jude et d’autres reprises de l’poque (Runaway…). Il s’clate avec des classiques formidables du rock: Blue Suede Shoes explose d’entre, ou encore Johnny B. Goode. En 11 CD, on a ici des heures d’coute, un indispensable pour tout admirateur de cet immense artiste. Ecoutez la version dcapante de What’d I say ou I got a woman, Elvis avait le blues et la soul dans le sang! Et que dire de ces chefs d’oeuvre que sont Can’t help falling in love et In the ghetto? Sublimes chansons tout simplement. Ces 58 shows en 4 semaines pour plus de 100 000 spectateurs (chaque reprsentation se jouant guichets ferms!) seront un triomphe absolu pour Elvis, mme les critiques de la presse sont genoux! L o je suis plus rserv, c’est la prsentation du coffret, un prix lev quand mme: on pouvait esprer un coffret rigide, protgeant mieux les CD, pas faciles sortir de leur tui. Mme chose pour le joli livret de 51 pages (photos, infos, interviews trs intressantes), ce prix-l, ne peut-on pas avoir un vrai livre solide? C’est la raison de l’toile en moins. Mais ce coffret prend parfaitement place la suite de celui en 4 CD Elvis live in Las Vegas qui contenait un des concerts du 24 aot 1969. Plus de 40 ans aprs sa mort, Elvis nous poustoufle encore et toujours!

Enfin un coffret comprenant l’intgralit des enregistrements professionnels des concerts qu’Elvis Presley donna Las Vegas en juillet/aot 1969 lors de son retour aprs huit annes d’absence sur scne ! Seul petit bmol : le son. La voix d’Elvis n’est pas aussi mise en avant que dans les ditions prcdentes de certains de ces shows dans la collection “Follow That Dream”. C’est ce qui explique les quatre toiles… Ce coffret reste toutefois un “must” pour tout fan du King ! J’espre qu’en fvrier 2020 BMG aura la bonne ide de fter les 50 ans de l’album “On Stage” en ditant un coffret similaire contenant l’intgralit des enregistrements professionnels effectus lors du retour d’Elvis Las Vegas en janvier/fvrier 1970…

If you are the type who needs to hear the same thing 11 times before it starts to sink in you will love this. Almost by lock step each concert follows the one before, even the aside jokes are done again and again.
The wait staff must have been able to do the concerts themselves after the first ten shows. If they weren’t such croakers and groaners they might have taken that bet.

Trs belle surprise car je n’avais pas acquis tous les coffrets de cette priode au cours des annes !! Donc beaucoup de belles dcouvertes. Ce coffret s’adresse aux fans car la set-list ne varie pas normment. Nanmoins il couvre ma priode prfre : voix et accompagnement au top, choix des titres plutt axs rock que balade, enregistrement de haute qualit. A noter que les 11 concerts “offerts” ne sont pas les 11 premiers de ce sjour VEGAS car le producteur n’a pas voulu stresser davantage l’ARTISTE ! ENCORE !!!

Excelente producto, tanto para coleccionistas (que ya tenamos casi todos los conciertos) como para gente que es la primera vez que escucha este material. Aunque los set lists estn repetidos en algunos casos, la intensidad de cada concierto es nica. Es un personaje que se disfruta de pe a pa. Es cosa de sentarse a tomarse un caf y disfrutar.

I know this is a long review, but there’s a lot to digest here.
When I first read Elvis: A life in Music, the Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Mikael Jorgensen and realized there were 11 complete concerts recorded during Elvis’ August run at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, I was hoping someday they would release all those shows. FTD and BMG released a few of the shows, but Legacy finally put them all together in this fabulous package. If you’re a hardcore Elvis fan, then you need to get this set. Certainly, there is a lot of repetition in the set list, but being able to listen to these shows in their entirety in such high quality is treasure trove worth digging into.
The highlights are all of the versions of “Suspicious Minds” which range in timing from 5:56 to 7:42 followed by a raucous version of “What’d I Say.” The medley at the beginning of the show: “Blue Suede Shoes,” “I Got a Woman,” “All Shook Up,” “Love Me Tender,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “Hound Dog” break the listener in to the show with a bang. These renditions tend to be done at quite a fast tempo, except for “Heartbreak Hotel.” Elvis does these songs justice, and even though the rendition of “Hound Dog” is perfunctory, Elvis does a good job of mixing the melody of Big Mama Thornton’s original and his own. The prelude to each version or “Hound Dog” finds Elvis taking a long time to get to it and you can tell he sings the song with tongue in cheek. I think if he had his druthers, he never would have sung that song again except for the fans wanting to hear it so badly.
The versions of “Memories” and “Baby, What You Want Me To Do” that were done on the television special get decent treatments from Elvis, though I wish he would have extended “Baby, What You Want Me To Do” for a little while longer or had as much fun with it in Vegas as he did in Burbank. “Runaway” is delivered well each night with appropriate seriousness. Most of the versions of “Yesterday” are ruined by Elvis singing “I’m not half the stud” and then giggling, but the renditions of the fade out of “Hey Jude” are done with energy and spirit. Each version of “In the Ghetto” are performed well by Elvis. It’s obvious he really liked the song at that point in his career.
The highlight of every show though is the incredible versions of “Suspicious Minds.” The longest version, 7:41, performed on the August 22 Midnight show, are worth the price of admission for this set. The best version is the one RCA chose for the Live at the International Hotel in Las Vegas which runs at 7:02. Just listen to Jerry Scheff’s bass line on each version. I mean this bass line is thunderous and absolutely riveting.
There are a few tunes that Elvis doesn’t perform very often such as “Words,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “My Babe” (the best of the lot) included in the set. These are welcome variations from the standard set list that permeates this collection. It seems like Elvis really enjoys these variations as he tends to perform them with more seriousness than some other songs. There’s also the twenty second snippets of “Loving You” that you wish Elvis would have done with just the acoustic guitar, but such is life.
The one-off songs like such as “Reconsider Baby” (the best of the one-offs), “Inherit the Wind,” and “Rubberneckin'” are a major welcome for this listener as I plowed through this set. It would have been great if Elvis would have challenged himself more and played some other songs from the American sessions, but such is life.
Overall, this is a huge must for Elvis fans, but there are some things that get irritating on this set. The monologue and the introductions to “Hound Dog” tend to get on a person’s nerves after a while. Elvis’ giggling and guffawing during many parts gets tiring, and his making rifle shot sounds gets old after the first time. For the most part, there is really only 45 to 50 minutes of music for each 70 to 79-minute show. This means that there is only at the least 60% music on one show (August 23 dinner show) to 73% music for the August 24 dinner show. I think what happened was Elvis was told to shorten the show by shortening the amount of time he was talking to the audience and making some inappropriate jokes and double entendres. The last show Elvis even belches into the microphone.
My favorite show is the one from August 24 Dinner. Elvis is focused and is really down to business. The monologue is only 7and a half minutes and the babbling before “Hound Dog” is kept to a minimum, and he sings “Yesterday” without singing “Half the stud” My least favorite show, though it has the most one-off of all 11 shows, is the midnight show of August 26th (the famous laughing version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight”). Elvis was in a particularly silly mood and I think it affected the performances. Not that they were bad, just not performed as well as they could have.
Here are some statistics for those who are interested. Also, these are my timings, so they may be inaccurate. Disc 1: 72:18. Disc 2: 70:48 Disc 3: 76:45 Disc 4: 77:13 Disc 5: 79:47 (the longest show in the collection) Disc 6: 61:31 (the shortest show in the set) Disc 7: 62:41 Disc 8: 72:05 Disc 9 75:10 Disc 10 73:28 Disc 11 74:52. That’s over 13 and a quarter hours of live Elvis!

Elvis conquers Vegas and returns to the stage. If you were lucky enough to be there, it is precious memories. If not, you are at the concerts through these excellent CDs and book. There is a new saying in the Elvis world: “Everything in one place.” 42 years after his death, with virtually nothing left in the vault and with everything that’s been released scattered piecemeal across numerous discs, it’s now the fashion to collect all the recordings together from particular sessions or live seasons (see also the That’s The Way It Is deluxe set from a few years ago) and sell it back to the fans in expensive box sets. Great news if you’re new to the game, of course, because despite the high initial outlay you save an absolute fortune in the long run by not having to search for out of print CDs, just to get the odd track here and there. For the rest of us, though, boxes like this have to be justified by promises that we’ll sell all our old albums and save some space by keeping only the new one. It never happens, we just hold on to everything.
Fans who know about the specialist ‘Follow That Dream’ label will be aware, for example, that the forthcoming Memphis Sessions (American Sound) box, despite containing five discs and costing around 60, holds less than fifteen minutes of unheard music (no new songs, and mainly only false starts of already heard recordings). And so we have a similar situation with this new live box. I can’t remember the exact details, but I think somebody somewhere worked out that if you take all the unheard music and stick it together, you’ll just about fill one CD. No completely unheard shows (although one did previously exist on vinyl only, released earlier this year as a Record Store Day special edition) but a couple of shows which had been picked at for compilation albums over the years and which are now brought together for the first time. So you could say, if you were being cynical, that you’re paying not far off a hundred pounds (depending when and where you bought it) for one CD.
That’s not a fair review however, that’s just me moaning, and a review should be about what we get and how it’s put together. And the answer to that is, it’s (very, very) good in parts. For a start, this is the live comeback year, so we’re not talking about drugged up and slurred speeches, fifteen minute band introductions, and Karate demonstrations. This is Elvis at his (almost) live best. Personally I think he got better the following year, but you may disagree, and what’s not in question is his commitment to the music. So that’s the first tick.
Secondly, the sound quality is about as good as you’d want. Or is it? I’ve seen people complaining that it’s too bright, people listening on stereo systems costing tens of thousands of pounds – and then I’ve seen others saying that it’s amazing on regular real-people systems, through headphones and Bluetooth speakers and car stereos. Sound quality is subjective. We’re also in the era where Elvis fans talk about their favourite ‘versions’ of recordings, where one mix or one re-mastering is preferred to another. This is great news for the record companies because it means they can reissue CDs at regular intervals after having given the tapes to a different engineer to mess around with. Yay…. For me, this new set sounds good enough, and I play everything on headphones or Sonos speakers. Even a kitchen radio. Just like most normal people do.
Third, the packaging. Eurgh… Buy it, take the discs out (if you can prise the cardboard slots open without ripping them) put them in a laptop and turn them into nice little MP3s or FLAC files, then put the box back on a shelf. Never open it again, and occasionally remind yourself that you paid a lot of money for something you never look at. After a while the guilt will go away, and you’ll be at peace. “At least I don’t do drugs and I’ve never been in trouble with the law.” That’s what I tell myself.
Lastly, the repetition. Well, I’m assuming that a casual music fan isn’t looking at the Amazon listing and thinking to him or herself, “I’m in the market for some Elvis. I know… I’ll buy these eleven virtually identical live shows.” If you’re buying it, you know what you’re getting and (presumably) you’re OK with it. But it is very samey, there’s no getting round that. Mostly the same songs, in roughly the same order, with the same dialogue in between. And that’s fine if it’s 1969, and you’ve got a ticket for your once in a lifetime Elvis show. You wouldn’t expect a performer to come up with a new set of quips and speeches every night, would you? But fifty years later, listening to the same speeches almost a dozen times can be a bit – a lot – boring. There’s only so many times that you can hear the same joke before you stop laughing. (It’s three times, in case you were wondering.)
In some ways it’s remarkable that four decades after somebody dies, there is still a big enough market that boxes like this can be considered viable. We, the fans, should consider ourselves well served. There’s no way that this isn’t a four star release, and it’s only the thoughtless packaging (oh, there’s a book in there as well, but I’ll be honest – I never look at them) and the lack of new material that stops me giving it five. I don’t know where we go from here, but I’m in no doubt that at some point in the next couple of years my credit card will be debited with a similar amount for yet another box of material that I am only buying because, ‘It’s all in one place”.
Its worth getting for the one concert that was unreleased (except on Vinyl in April this year) and also for the 4 concerts that contain previously unreleased tracks (31 tracks). However I think it should have also contained the 03/08/69 concert as that has been officially released before on soundboard. There are from august 69 unofficial audience recordings of other august 69 concerts but due to the sound quality I can understand why these were not included. The packaging is nice but could have been better and is flimsy and hard to remove and replace the cds and I would have preferred a similar style packaging to Elvis Thats the way it Is Box set with far stronger cardboard cover and a larger size (album size) box set. The booklet is nice but a more substantial larger and even hard cover book would have been better. It would have been better to include all concerts from August 69 available in soundboard quality or to just include the previously unreleased concert and the 4 which are now more complete

What could I possibly dislike about this box set. It’s Elvis for goodness sake, it’s wonderful, beautiful and very very special. Plus it was delivered much quicker than originally predicted.

maybe I have just about every track that elvis sung, and loads of box sets etc QUALITY OF PACKAGING IS POOR. OUTER SLEEVE IS VERY THIN ,THE CD SLOTS ARE VERY TIGHT both could easy to rip .

Oh Boy Oh Boy, at last Elvis escapes, no sorry Sony releases a box set of Elvis that was worth the asking price. 11 discs containing 11 Vegas 69 shows, unedited and in their entirety. Mixed and mastered superbly, each one is crystal clear and Elvis man, that cat just rocks!
It was pure, raw, unadulterated Elvis giving it his all, as only he can. Rock n roll at its best by the King himself. It was raw, but polished and his voice was harsh when rocked, smooth when crooning for the women in the audience. Elvis was BACK and he was in total control, the leash was cut and the Colonel was no longer the puppet master.
Elvis was having fun on stage and it was contagious and he brought the band along with him and held the audience in the palm of his hand. You want to listen to Elvis live, then this 11 CD box set is the definitive of live.
The recordings are fabulous, you can feel and hear Elvis, you can hear the guitar licks and almost hear James Burton’s fingers on the strings. the only let down, especially on the first show is that Ronnie Tutt’s drums are too far back in the mix, maybe it was the way it was recorded but thems the breaks, but they got it right in the end. You can hear everyone coming together, better and better each show. This box set is value for money, unlike the 68 Comeback Special box set, double the price for less than half the discs. That was a rip-off especially as 80% was previously released. I didn’t purchase it.
If you are an Elvis fan, then this is a box set not to be missed and if you’re not, then this is the best box set to start of with. Get this and you’ll learn why Elvis is the best. Forget the rest this is Elvis showing the world that he is King, not just of rock n roll but every gene that was, is and yet to come. No one could or ever will again be able to sing and cover so many styles as Elvis.

RCA/ Sony has compiled more boxed sets for Elvis Presley than for any other pop and rock star in history. This includes exhaustive complete masters, masters from the fifties, sixties and seventies, several gospel sets, deluxe editions of individual albums, and more. In recent times they’ve released impressive boxes of his earliest recordings, his Stax sessions, the That’s the Way it Is sessions, and the 1968 special.
This set is perhaps the best, and most fun, of them all. And I would argue among the most important.
Physically, the set is more compact than many of the more recent ones. But the book is terrific, with enough background and history for the novice and collector alike. The discs may not be stored ideally, but that may be its only drawback.
Yes, a lot of duplication, but that’s how the shows went down fifty years ago. A set list was composed, a script was written, and each night featured both. But each performance is top notch. Presley is in peak vocal form, and the band behind him sparkles. The mixing job on this set is top notch. You can groove with the vocals and band well. If you change the EQ on each show, it’s interesting to note the difference.
This is a vital document. Thankfully RCA had their recorders running. If only someone had thought of a video for posterity. Elvis is finally liberated from the lousy movies and wretched soundtracks on this set.
It’s a fantastic set I love having 11 concerts of Elvis but who cares if the setlist is almost the same but when you have rare songs that Elvis performed such as memories rubbernecking this is the story these are songs he would never perform again. I think we are lucky that RCA recorded all these concerts. Then add the 5 or 6 that’s the way it is concerts and Madison square garden concerts and the rehearsal and satellite show of aloha from Hawaii and recorded live in Memphis from 1974. Thats almost 30 recorded concerts that we have of Elvis we should be thankful that RCA recorded as many concerts as they did. The 68 comeback special had 3 or 4 concerts so I’m blessed to be able to listen to this man from 68 to 74.

Fantastic concerts the king back where he belongs back on stage singing great songs and enjoying himself. Instead of feeling sick makeing them movies. This 1969 box set is a brilliant release

On peut regretter l’absence de 1 ou 2 shows en bluray 5.1. Peut tre dans le futur.(Les nouveaux coffrets Beatles sont de bons exemples).

This 11 cd set comes in the 7″ package format much as Prince From Another Planet or The Searcher. The box and packaging is made out of card and is somewhat flimsy. Be careful when picking the set up as the weight of the discs can cause the sleeve to crease if you pick it up from the corners.
Within the box are two fold out cardboard sleeves one of which contains six discs, the other five discs. There is some nice artwork on these sleeves containing photos of Elvis, some 1960s style graphics and a photo of Las Vegas advertising which is nice and reminiscent of those times.
Included is a nice 52 page booklet with great photos and text some of which are anecdotes of those that experienced Elvis’ return to live performances as well as quotes from Elvis himself. At the end of the book is several pages dedicated to the discs and their track listings which also explain what was previously unreleased and where the released material was originally located.
Now as for the music, 11 discs of consecutive concerts from August 1969. I have sat and listened to them all today and can confirm the mix and mastering is superb and you can hear elements of the music, for example piano, on some songs you were unable to hear from previous releases. Fantastic. Now as we are aware much of this material has been previously released either as complete concerts or piecemeal though if is wonderful to have these concerts in uniform sound rather than the variety of mixes previously released. It has been great listening to many familiar songs but in the context of the original set lists and performances.
There are many repeated songs from this period and you now have over an hours worth of Suspicious Minds and a couple hours worth of Elvis’ Life Story / Monologues but you become acutely aware of Elvis’ excitement and rawness returning to the stage. As Elvis worked through the 55 shows at The International Hotel there was three days of Peace and Love at Woodstock during August 1969 and rather than having his fans sit in a muddy field Elvis hit the boards up and running with a well rehearsed set that simply didnt miss a beat. He sold out the venue every single night and his return to Vegas was triumphant and buried the ghosts of 1956 when he flunked at The Frontier Hotel.
There are some highlights in these shows for example Memories which he performed in the Singer Special in ’68, Inherit The Wind and This Is The Dtory, two lesser known songs from Memphis Sessions in 1969 which he never performed live again. Rubberneckin’ is a treat and its great hearing Funny How Time Slips Away a year before he recorded it in Nashville. One of my standout tracks is Reconsider Baby where Elvis proves he was a natural blues singer.

Ce splendide coffret nous retrace en 11CD du midnight show du 21 Aot au midnight show du 26 Aot ce retour fulgurant.La prsentation contenant un livret de 52 pages est superbe et les photos sont splendides.
Cependant,les disques qui sont insrs dans la conception dpliable en carton o figure de trs belles photos sont difficiles d’accs.Il faut s’armer de patience pour retirer chaque CD sans abmer l’insert en carton et c’est un peu dommage.Quoiqu’il en soit je ne peux me rsoudre retirer une toile,tant ces enregistrements pleins de fougue sont historiques.
This is an 11-disc set featuring a selection of shows from The Kings engagement in Vegas in 1969. The set is well packaged, comes with a lovely booklet and the sound quality of all the CDs are great. Yes, it is is essentially 11-discs of the same songs, but each show is slightly different and unique, especially disc 11 which has the ‘laughing’ version “Are you lonesome tonight?”
Ultimately it does what it says on the tin, and it does it well.
Fortunate to receive this set on 9 August and I am aware that there are delays expected for many Amazon customers. Well this is certainly a lavish box set and 7″ format. The set is extremely well presented and contains a very detailed discography. However I did deduct 1 star purely because the set starts only on 21 August ’69 and I feel he was starting to show some signs of boredom. Compare with Opening Night (actually the disc is Aug 3 not 31 July) and you’ll see what I mean. Nevertheless it’s still a very fine collection and a must for all Elvis fans. I noticed too that some of the tracks are a bit shorter than previous CD releases. There probably a few other shows from 69 still in the can so it’s not complete indeed 11 seems a strange number to include. They certainly could have included the marvelous 3 August show and I would have awarded 5 stars without hesitation. The Mule.
