This is a great looking Joy-con, it works well and the buttons are easy to use.
However it be aware that it does not work when you remove the joycon from the switch, as it does not have an internal battery.

This is as described and works well with the switch surprisingly no drift after a year of heavy use. This works connected to switch on will not work in multi player ie disconnected from console would highly recommend as I have 2 switches in house and clumsy children. The cost alone make it worth while.

I got this controller to replace my original left Joycon when it started to drift. It’s a great replacement and I actually like the d-pad way more than the original buttons. The fact that it can’t be used wirelessly isn’t a big deal for me, since I have a pro controller for use in docked mode.

I had pretty much quit playing my Switch because drift was so bad I couldnt even play games as simple as Minecraft or Pokemon without becoming extremely annoyed. I couldnt even select in game items without fighting the controller and it was a miserable experience.
This was the cheapest route to go to fix that drift problem. It works fine and NO more drift. It looks really cool too. *It would be awesome if it came with a matching grafix sticker for the other controller.

    No more drif

Purchased this as our left joycon has gone for repairs. This only works on handheld and is not wireless however its great as my daughter can continue playing animal crossing. My kids miss playing mario together but hopefully the joycon won’t take too long to be repaired. In the mean time this handheld joycon with the cute mario images is super cute and Perfect for temporary usage. It’s comfy and feels exactly like the usual joycon.

After my left stick got stuck and wouldn’t allow my link to crouch in BOTW I was stuck playing only in docked mode of my the TV with a pro controller

After looking at joy cons I didn’t want to pay 50+ to replace both sticks just for handheld play when I had another solution with my pro controller

This joy con was the perfect comprise, cheaper then buying two fully functional joy con and small enough to fix in my switch case so I can easily swap it out for handheld mode

I don’t like this controller on ACNH , the lack of rumble is off putting and I don’t use the broken button when playing but for any game where the broken button is needed this great and fixes my problems

I will edit this review after a few days to see if the quality is worth i

It works great. My son broke his original joy con and we didn’t want to replace it until he was able to save up for half of it so that he’d learn to be more careful, so I bought this as a sort of compromise so that he can still play handheld but can’t use it for motion controls. It does what it’s supposed to do and looks pretty awesome as well.

I bought this product as a birthday present for my partner who is a great Zelda fan, and loves gaming. The product arrived very quickly after ordering it, and the detail on it is superb. It’s great value for money. My only disappointment, is that it’s only one, and doesn’t come as part of a joy-con set. That said, it is unlikely my partner will use it, but rather keep it in hits box as a collectors item, as with previous collectible merchandise. And I am still giving it five stars, as the description of the item clearly states it is only the one joy-con, and I think considering the value for money, the quality, and swift delivery, it’s not fair to knock a star off the rating.

It’s a worthwhile purchase though, definitely worth getting if you like gaming, and love the Zelda games.

Controls are quickly responsive and its just like a normal switch controller. Plus—come on, who doesnt like gold pikachu??

Overall this is a great fix for someone who is looking to play 2D games on the switch with a propper Dpad.

The major downside to this controller is the fact that the catch release button is way bigger than the standard Nintendo joycon, what this means is the majority of switch cases wont fit flush untill you have modified them in some way (as seen in photos).

    WARNING for case users.

I bought this so I could play fighting games like dragonball fighterz without getting my thumb inbetween directional buttons and this was perfect its super accurate and it’s not super squishy and the joystick is also great. The only nitpick I have is that the – and share buttons are made out of this super soft plastic and u can’t click the buttons without pushing in with the tip of ur thumb or fingernail. But other than that it’s amazballs.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAbsolutely perfect control-wise. Buttons move smoothly, cleanly. Design gorgeous.

Two things: the release button on the back is raised, which can impact any cases you want to put on your device, and the soft minus-button is very thin and tends to bend rather than push in unless you push perfectly straight towards the joy-con.

    Other than that, no complaints!

  51. BettyHardison says:

I bought this to have a spare left controller because the stock one had the drift issue, which was causing me issues playing Zelda Breath of the Wild.
The only cons of this one is that is not Bluetooth, so it works as long as you keep attached to the Switch: on the other hand is cheaper than buy the standard joycon. I use it only when I’m on the go.
The outer shell of the joycon is made of a semi-transparent plastic so you can see the interior of the controller, which is a nice touch.
This is an official licensed Nintendo joycon, well made and I didn’t have any issues so far.
I recommend this product to all the people that want a spare joycon to use on the go.

  52. Anonymous says:

My left joy con started to drift when playing Zelda, this is a great alternative to buying a set of two joy cons, especially when my problem only affected the left con.

  53. HollySolomon says:

Obviously is what it is, no drift, brilliant, same weight as a regular joy con, just a tiny bit wider and the release button sticks out a bit further, overall do reccomend the product, but not the guy who delivered i

  54. VioletteKovar says:

It adds a traditional dpad to the left joycons. It loses all the extra functionality for that because the left joy con has no battery or gyro. It’s handheld mode only. If your comfortable with the current joycons size and want a dpad it’s great. If you want something bigger I’d go for the faint ex machina switch pro controllers. There handheld mode only but much larger. Pick what’s best for you.

  55. LizaBoyles says:

     United Kingdom

This is a wonderful product. I bought this as a replacement for my left joycon, which developed some stick drift, a common problem. This joycon is similar in weight to a standard one, with well weighted buttons and similarly good control to the basic joycons that come with the switch. It can’t be used when the switch is docked, but it’s excellent for mobile play.
The capture and minus buttons are made from rubberised material rather than the more standard hard plastic, which isn’t a bad thing ultimately, and caused me no issues through several hours of play. The Dpad is easy to use, and whilst I haven’t used it as genuine directional control yet, it feels through other play as though it would work well for that. I’ve had none of the occasional disconnection issues that I’ve experienced with other joycons, and the joystick itself fits my joystick covers perfectly which makes for a comfortable play experience. Not to mention the fact it is /absolutely gorgeous/ to look at, and now makes me very excited to look at my switch!

Only downsides I can mention are the aforementioned lack of remote play, and the lack of rumble in the controller; but it’s also around half the price of buying a full joycon, so I’ll take that tradeoff.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to replace a drifting joycon who plays predominantly mobile play.

    Excellent product, works well.

For the Price you really cant go wrong.

I’ll start off by saying its noticeably lighter and of cheaper build quality than the very expensive Nintedo made ones but thats not a shock. That said the Nintendo ones always seem to devolp that annoying drifting issue which when you are trying to fish/bug catch on Animal crossing is beyond fustrating.

This fixes that issue on the cheap and I feel the Anologue stick has more precision than before. The D-pad is a nice added bonus and its easier to quick select Items in Animal Crossing now.

Alas this only works in hand held mode but I use a Gamecube style switch USB controller when I have it docked anyway (highly recommend this).

My only minor gripe is it doesnt have vibrate but you don’t notice this if your other Joycon has it, and I’d honestly expect to pay an extra 10 for a Vibrate feature anyway.

So if you only use the Switch on the go or have a Pro/GC Control for Docked gaming – then this is perfect.

This has been far more robust than the official controller and looks great with my other grey joy-con. I have a pro controller for TV mode and only ever use the joy-cons when attached to the console, so the lack of vibrate / wireless is not an issue. D pad is also much nicer than the 4 buttons.

Lastly it is much cheaper and I didn’t for one minute feel like I’ve been ripped off as is the case when I had to replace my official joy-con (again) for the creep issue (just out of warranty, again). I would get a 2nd right joy-con if they did one for all the above reasons.

Now if only Nintendo did a Switch Lite that had a TV mode…

  62. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

The feel of the analog stick is exactly the same as standard joycon. The dpad feels superb and works a treat with Street Fighter Collection, MK11 and New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe!
If you have a handle grip, this might not fit anymore as this is slightly bigger than the standard joycon which is 32mm across the face vs the dpad joycon 33mm across the face). I have a Hori Goplay Game Traveller grip and my switch doesn’t seat properly once this dpad joycon is attached to my switch. Just something to bear in mind if like me you like playing switch with handle grips!
The only other negative is the lack of vibration, but it says clearly in the description!

Price is great, build quality is good too. I just assumed this would have exactly the same features as the normal Joy Cons, which it does not. My own fault really as I did not read the feature list as I just thought it would have all the features.

Slightly annoying as I did buy it as a 3rd controller. I do think the title on Amazon should be updated to make it more obvious that it only works in hand held mode!

    Still a great controller though.

I like the design, has a nice feel to the buttons. Doesn’t have the wireless functionality like the standard switch controllers but I only really play in hand-hold mode myself anyway so there isn’t any problems for me personally. The design is cool and looks awesome on my switch. Just wish they did the right controller in this style as I would like a matching pair.

  70. Anonymous says:

Really great joycon and it’s perfect for the recently released SNES games which is the reason I bought it. I don’t even care that it doesn’t have rumble because I have it turned off anyway when playing games in portable. Just remember that it ONLY works in portable mode. There is no battery or Bluetooth inside so it won’t work unless it’s physically connected to the Switch. Hence why its so cheap compared to an official left joycon. Great product for what it is, though.

Lighter than the usual joy-con due to less components (motion sensor, vibration unit and battery). Still functions like any other handheld joy-con.
Reasonable price for this version of the joy-con.
Joy stick seems a little firmer than the slandered joy-con when you move it witch feels nice and no problems with drift (so far).
I like the design; makes the purchase that much more worth while and satisfying.

All in all a good item if you are if you are looking for a cheaper replacement for a single joy-con but only downside is can only be used in the handheld mode.

  73. Cycling Weekly says:

If you play handheld a lot like I do and want a d-pad instead of the buttons for 2D games then this is perfect for you. You can’t attached it to the grip it has to be attached the switch it’s self to work as it doesn’t have wireless capabilities or a battery, but like unsaid if your a hand held gamer then it’s a none issue. Enjoy 2D mario and alike with a D-pad the way it’s meant to be played.

  74. RickeyCundiff says:

I really like this it works very well in my switch. I reccomend anyone wanting a new joy con you they should get this and save money by not buying official crappy joy cons. I’ve have had several official joy cons and they start drifting after a few days so I have up and bought this one, I’ve had this several weeks now and I’m very happy. I bought it knowing it can only be used while docked or used in handheld but I’m happy with that. People need to be aware you cant use it detached like the official joy cons and it as no bluetooth or vibrate in. I highly reccomend this is you are not fussed about that and are fed up of replacing with the expensive official joy cons.

  75. Anonymous says:

An absolute must own for any Switch owner. If you play handheld mode most of the time then this joycon is for you!. The buttons and Analog Stick are so fluid and responsive. They are virtually identical to the official Joy Con buttons.

Now onto the best part………..The D-Pad.
This is where the joy con shines!. Hori has a designed an extremely comfortable and responsive D-Pad. This makes fighting games a lot more enjoyable!. Take Mortal Kombat 11 for instance. Pulling off hard and intricate combos are more far easy to do when using this controller. Its also perfect for platformers like Super Mario Maker 2 or Racing games like Mario Kart 8.

The decal design is also top notch quality. Unlike stickers that fade over a very short time, the decal will stay there for along as you keep playing!.

There are a few downsides to these controllers. These joycons lack a built in battery, NFC touchpoint and wireless capabilities. So just remember these points before you decide to buy. I never play Local Multiplayer so not having these does not an issue at all and if i do want to play Local Multiplayer, il just use my normal joycon instead.

All in all for the price, you cant complain for the quality you get. Hori really outdid themselves on this one and for 3rd party standards, the quality is exceptional.

  76. LynellMendez says:

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThe switch started with the left trigger floating- which is a common problem with these joy cons- I have a 4 year old gamer- we’ve gone through 4 sets in 18 months- and its not that he’s massively rough with them- he’s really respectful of the switch- but hes a little trigger happy- for example Zelda or Lego games he’ll spend loads of time running round- or have the characters spinning in circles.

So to be able to just buy the left- even if it doesnt match the right….and for the price I paid was great- it works brilliant- and I’m not too upset at having to buy yet ANOTHER joy con!

I wish nintendo would address the issue!

This was a replacement for my original broken controller which no longer reliably stays docked. It works well, but only when attached to the switch. Unlike the regular controllers, this lacks the functionality to work as a stand alone device. It also does not rumble, and is about half the weight of the original controller. But when attached to the switch it works just fine. The D pad is great for platform games too. So overall, if you don’t mind the limitations, this is well worth thinking about.

Works great - though not as a stand alone controlle

If you like me prefer to play in handheld mode then this is the perfect option. Not only is it pretty but it’s an affordable price. It starts working immediately when you attach it to your switch. The only real difference that might be distracting is the back button used to remove your joy-con. As you can see in the photo it sticks out, but for me personally it’s not a bother while playing. The joy-con build is see-through which is noticeable when held up to the light, which for me wasn’t too appealing. But overall it’s definitely worth the buy.

    Worth the buy

The D pad on this controller is perfect quality for 2D games and I even prefer it in place of the standard buttons in most 3D games. There’s no wireless control, rumble or motion controls but on all the games I’ve tried that use rumble and motion controls, the right hand joycon makes up for that on it’s own anyway. I actually use this in place of the blue joycon now 90% of the time.
It’s lighter than a standard joycon due to the fact there’s less inside it (No rumble etc), but it doesn’t feel cheap at all. It’s as good a quality as the actual Nintendo joycon, they wouldn’t put their seal on it if it wasn’t.
Absolutely no issues with this whatsoever. Couldn’t be happier with i

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFor the price this does the trick. But be aware of a few things going into this. As stated by Hori this is for handheld mode only. That’s the reason it’s cheap. There is no rumble or battery in this joy con. There’s also no shoulder buttons when you take the joy con off as it cannot be used wirelessly when removed from the switch. Ok now that’s out of the way.

I play a lot of retro games in handheld mode and the AAA Nintendo games mainly in docked mode. So this D pad is perfect for me.

When using the smaller screen games like Mega Man X , NES classics etc just look better. But the Switch doesn’t come with a DPad. I have previously modded a switch with a new shell and it was an annoying and frustrating process. I didn’t want to do it again with my newer switch so went for this option.

The joy con and more importantly the dpad feels great and instantly helps when playing 2D platformers.

I love it and I think the price is very reasonable. It has improved my retro gameplay and performance.

Some reviews complain about button quality, but I have been surprised by how good this has been. The d-pad has been alot less squishy than other reviews have suggested. It has never misinterpreted my input in the same way that the offical nintendo pro controllers d-pad has done for me in the past. The “-” button is definitely very squishy (bad). Everything else is pretty much identical to the offical nintendo joy con.

The biggest downside is the lack of rumble support and wireless connectivity.

But somehow this hori controller has remained slotted into my switch since I bought it. I have never really wanted to switch back to the the original switch joy con!

If you can’t be bothered to perform a Joy-Con shell swap to one with a real D-Pad, this Hori Joy-Con is your only other option. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, though ideally, the D-Pad would be clicky instead of mushy like Hori has opted to go for. Not bad for 20, but if want a proper Joy-Con, go for the Joy-Con shell swap instead.

Great little Joy-Con with some big downsides: lack of wireless connectivity, HD Rumble

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersMuch like many people (probably) I had to look for an alternative when my left joy-con controller decided that something really interesting was in the corner and never wanted to leave. After repairing it once already, the stick decided that once again the corner was it’s one and only love.

Eventually, I said sod this and picked this little bad boy up and I can happily say that *so far* it remains perfectly centred and hasn’t joined the other joysticks to go and party in the corner.

The D-pad is a nice and welcome addition despite it being mushier than poking mashed potato. It works and for the price, I can’t complain.

The Legend of Zelda themed design on the controller is really nice to look at ever now and then when I put my console down after a horrible time losing at Smash.

Be aware that this product is specifically for games in handheld mode. If you want a proper dpad, especially for 2D or side on games, it does the job very well. Looks the business. Just don’t be expecting it to work in docked or tabletop mode…

Got the dreaded drifting problem with my original joy con which made playing games such as Dark Souls borderline impossible at times ,so I brought this as it was a cheaper alternative to the official joy cons as I only play my switch in handheld mode.

As near as you will get to a dpad on the switch. Not perfect but near enough. Nintendo missed a trick by not releasing one themselves. Hopefully it will last, time will tell!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe main reason I bought this d-pad was to play SNK Heroines and Street Fighter II with as I found it extremely difficult to perform the moves accurately with the stick. The d-pad makes things a lot easier.

The d-pad Joycon itself seems to be well made. The actual d-pad doesn’t feel that positive when you press the directions, not like the d-pad on the Nintendo Pro Controller, which has a stiffer and more positive response. Having said that, it does work, I just wish it had a slightly stiffer feel. I will do until Nintendo, hopefully, release an official d-pad Joycon.

Golden Review Award: 122 From Our UsersFirstly, in case you missed it, this controller does not come with the bells and whistles of a normal Joy-Con. There’s no HD Rumble (or any vibration at all for that matter) and no battery or wireless connector. It can only be used while attached to the Switch in handheld mode. Of course, this is all reflected in the price as this controller is significantly more affordable than a Joy-Con.

I’ll also bring up some other differences that may not immediately be apparent. While the joystick looks identical to the one on a standard Joy-Con, it is ever-so-slightly stiffer. Nothing you’d notice in normal use unless you’re paying very close attention though.

The L and ZL buttons are clickier as well as being in a slightly different position compared to a normal Joy-Con.

The minus and screenshot button however are made of soft rubber, and this makes the narrower minus button in particular a lot more awkward to use. Not a deal breaker, but I’d have appreciated them changing the shape of the button as well if they’re going to change the material; something larger like the screenshot button does not suffer as much (this particularly annoys me as I use a soft silicon grip with my Joy-Cons; when I fit one over this controller, the minus button gets even harder to press).

The release button on the back is also quite different to a normal Joy-Con’s. For whatever reason it sits on top of a big wedge of plastic, sticking out roughly three times more than the normal button. Something to watch out for if you have grips or armour guards for your Joy-Cons, or a full body grip-case for handheld mode.

And now for the star of the show, the D-pad. While it’s definitely not a clicky pad, it feels responsive and accurate. It performs excellently with 2D platformers and is very consistent in producing fireballs and dragon punches in Street Fighter.

However, the pad’s greatest weakness is its position on the controller. Whereas your thumb comfortably extends when using the joystick, it claws down over the D-pad in a position that compromises control and comfort. You can adjust your grip to combat this somewhat, but you’re almost forced to pinch the controller at the bottom, rather than nesting it against your palm.

Finally, I have some gripes with the look of the controller. The transparent dark plastic and gold design look terrific, but the design doesn’t really mesh with any of the standard right Joy-Cons. I’d personally have preferred the option of the standard grey, blue or red. Also, since neither BotW or Odyssey need a D-pad at all, the Mario and Zelda theming seem like an odd choice.

Overall I think it’s a nice item, but I can only recommend it if you need a decent D-pad for handheld mode. If you play plenty of platformers or fighting games while out and about then it’s great, otherwise you’ll not get much more out of it than you will from a normal Joy-Con.

    Great pad, imperfect controlle

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersIf you’re reading this you’re probably like me, and can’t stand the Switch’s janky 4-button d-pad for 2D titles. The good news is this is a massive improvement, and makes stuff like Sonic Mania and the Nintendo Online NES games much more enjoyable to play.

First things first – for those that missed it, this thing has no rumble, no motion controls, and no wifi so has to be physically attached to the console to work. The upshot of this is it’s fairly cheap by Nintendo standards, and it’s also super light (I thought I’d recieved an empty box at first). The control stick feels very similar to the regular Switch one, and the shoulder buttons are nice and clicky.

The d-pad itself though is good, but not great. In a word, it feels kinda mushy. It’s hard to feel when you’ve pushed from a single direction into a diagonal one, which can be a problem when it’s important to press diagonal directions quickly, like fighting games. However, I just got it today, so hopefully it’s something that can be adjusted to. That aside, it’s working great so far, and I’d totally recommend it for the price.

Not perfect, but does what it says on the tin.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI’ve been waiting for this product for ages and finally have it, I can hardly believe it. This is very much a joy-con designed to fill a very specific niche. This is a substitute left joy-con for the Switch and the big deal is, it has a proper d-pad, rather than the crosskeys that mirror the right joy-con.

So what? Well, the crosskeys are fine, except when it comes to 2D fighting games and some retro stuff, where they are next to useless. Games like Street Fighter Anniversary Collection are next to unplayable with the default joy-con and make these type of games fairly pointless when the Switch is handheld mode. If you play the Switch in docked mode, there are plenty of fight pads and other controllers to do the job, but in handheld mode, zippo…until now.

What the left joy-con needed was a d-pad and this gives it. The analog stick is still there and the other buttons too but now you have a d-pad to pull off those tricky hadokens etc. It is a good d-pad too, firm and certain, yet not too hard. It seems pretty accurate and I was able to consistently do fireballs as Ryu to my satisfaction. The durability seems good but that is going to need more extended play to properly judge. In my opinion, it is one of the better d-pads on a recent controller.

And that is about it. But buyers need to be aware of what this joy-con doesn’t have. As stated by the manufacturer, this joy-con is only for use in handheld mode; it has no remote capabilities, no motion sensor and no rumble feature. In short, you can’t use it when the Switch is docked. None of this really matters though, as this product is designed to fill that specific handheld niche. Few fighters or retro games use the motion sensor or rumble, and rumble is a bit pointless in beat ’em ups anyway. It is a shame you can’t use it when the Switch is plugged into your TV but there are those other contol options available that I mentioned before.

All in all, this is a great product for the right customer. You’ll know whether you need this or not because you’ve probably been asking yourself why this didn’t exist before, and now it does. Just don’t buy it as a replacement joy-con, only as an additional control option.
