Great mic!
This mic is excellent. I have various different microphones to use when filming in my office and this finally is the one I hoped for. It’s loud at 1m and has less noise than any other I’ve tried. I still use an NTG2 for my primary mic, but this is used as a backup mounted to the camera in case I forget to record the main track. The output is nearly as good as the NTG2 despite being mounted further away. The versatility of using USB or phono is great, it’s usually plugged into the camera direct but I can also use if with the PC if needed. As an all rounder this would definitely be my recommendation, and mounted close to the mouth could easily be a main podcast mic.
Its Rode isn't it!
Anything from Rode makes me happy, this isn’t in the pro range, but its a nice mic and great for vloggers and phone video makers. Its also brilliant for all amateur camcorder enthusiasts
Great little mic
I bought this as I’m filming videos on my iphone and needed better sound. I had to buy the additional cable sold separately and a dongle to attach it to my phone but it works great. Sound is definitely improved and certainly gives a much more professional finish!
The mic is small and easy to mount so really great addition to my kit!

The one to have
I’ve had tons of microphones, but this is amazing. Records 2 streams simultaneous and the quality Is crystal clear. Rechargeable battery, light and portable. Well worth the money.
Great piece of kit.
I love it. Great little piece of kit. Can always trust rode. It goes great with my Sony A6400 camera.
I have been using this Mic for about one month. I am impressed with the quality, I have used it indoors and outdoors, and the way it can handle the noise of the environment is excellent. I made a video where I thought the audio wasn’t right because I was close to the train station and every few seconds a train passes; when I checked the footage I could hear the voice correctly and clear, the train too of course, but not as noisy as I thought. Other places where I have used the Mic is in my studio and at the church, and it is good too, not too much echo. The battery is durable, and it charges quick.
The only thing I had problems at the beginning was when the camera turns off the Mic goes off a few seconds later, once it doesn’t detect power, that is great to save battery. However, when the camera goes off, and you turn it on straight away without waiting for the Mic to go off, the Mic won’t turn on, make sure and be aware when you turn back on your camera the Mic is ON before press record.
For everything else I am really happy with this RODE VideoMic NTG; it is worth the investment for me.
Worth the money, great mic
Can tell the difference with a cheap one. This mic works really good, it captures every sound in front of it, I use it mainly to play instrument. Definitely worth the money.
Great microphone for all types of filming!
After using the Rode Video Micro for my YouTube and client videos, I thought it was time to upgrade my audio. I needed a high-quality audio source that would help me produce better content with my Canon M50.
One of the most common issues I’ve found with previous microphones is forgetting to turn them off and then batteries run out. This is why I love the automatic power feature which turns the microphone on and off when the camera is turned on and off.
With the power for the mic you have several options with either the rechargeable battery, AA’s, or constant Micro USB power. This is really useful as it means there will be very few opportunities where the mic is out of power.
I also really like the variety of features that the mic has. This includes the high pass filter, gain modes, and safety channel. The best of these for me is the +20dB mode as my camera doesn’t have the best preamps. This gives me the opportunity to have really good quality sound.
Overall, this is a really good, professional microphone with some great features. I’m yet to find something that I’m not a fan of with this microphone and look forward to using it for several years. This is certainly a microphone that I would recommend to others.

My only comment is that the “I’ve forgotten to switch it off after use” LED is on the back…so expect the odd flat 9v battery if you’ve been using it to VC or vlog with.

Fantastic little microphone
I have been looking at these and the cheaper copies. The Rode videomicro is a super little mic and at a reasonable price.
No doubt this microphone is one of the best in the market so far. Great flexibility and easy plug/play in your camera. It’s also a good back up microphone if you record audio externally. The auto-on/off and the new recording functions make a strong case to buy it. -> 4.5 Stars
I received it the first time and the foam was a bit damaged. The customer service sent me another one and the result was similar. The customer service went the extra mile and tried to make it right all the time. They even sent me return tags as I didn’t have any printer handy during the lockdown. Nothing to complain about them. It’s just unfortunately a weak packaging from the manufacturer for such an expensive product. This means that the foam can be slightly damaged and in theory after few days should regain the shape but it’s not always the case as you can see on the photo/video. Again, the seller was great, it’s just Rode that they need to invest in better packaging for future releases. -> 2.5 Stars

Good solid microphone
Great quality from RODE as expected. Unfortunately does NOT include the Dead Kitten wind shield that is necessary for outdoor use in my opinion. After testing the mic out for a couple of days using my DJI Osmo Pocket while out walking, I noticed that I could hear a lot of knocking on my recordings which I later found was a result of the wire moving and touching parts of my rig as I moved. The solution I found for this was to isolate the cable from the shock mount and other componets on my rig by taping it up and using cable ties to control the routing of the cable. Speaking of the cable, it worries me that it is built into the mic and is not detachable/replacable, other than this I absolutely love this mic and would definitely recommend it.
Really hit jackpot with this mic, love how a little bit of research pays off. Yes, it’s a relatively expensive mic but it’s super versatile. I had recently bought a Blue Yeti X for my desktop set up in order to get better audio quality on zoom calls, as well for better audio on voiceovers (not a gamer/streamer which is mainly what Yeti’s are intended for I think). I was also in the market for a mic for my camera and was looking to pick up a decent rode mic (probably video mic pro) for it when I stumbled across this. I didn’t even know this existed. I guess it’s a relatively new mic compared to the rest of the videomics. I love versatile this mic is. I use it plugged into my desktop for calls and voiceovers, switch it to my camera when I’m shooting and also hook it up to my phone for shooting beautiful 4k video as well. This thing is such a good value for money if you use its functions since you don’t have to have multiple mics. It’s built very well, very small and easy to use. I returned my Blue Yeti after I got this. Great job Rode!

Excellent Mic with a great use range of use
I run the mic with a GoPro, GH5 and Osmo Action. It works perfectly, actually better than my Active Shot gun mic from Rode. It is ver compact and the dead cat works well.
A Superb Microphone
This a superb microphone, and doesn’t rely on batteries! The sound quality is very good… an improvement on the camera microphone. It’s ideal for someone into birds as it really bring in the bird whistles. For my use, this an ideal microphone!!!
Best portable mic for vlogs you can ge
If you vlog and film a tonne using a DSLR or phone this is an absolute must for. I use this a bunch with my nikon d5500 and huawei honor 10 and i must say the results a very good for the price range. If you are running this mic on a phone setup i do recommend purchasing SC7 cable since the mic won’t function on a phone without it. It’s the only drawback from an otherwise great product.
The VideoMicro functions very similar to the video mic go as you simply plug it in adjust you’re devise settings and you’re ready to go. It doesn’t run on batteries, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your preference but the sound production pre processing is still top notch. For those who don’t know most mics with built in batteries have a better quality sound since they also come with built-in pre-amps and high pass filters. Though it’s not necessary, these are for reducing noise, hisses and interference further and leaving a much crisper sound. These issues can easily be fixed since it’s just changing the camera settings on you’re device so unless you’re a pro wanting absolute control over sound design you shouldn’t worry too much about.
The mic comes with a hot shoe mount that has a stabiliser for vibration compensation and it stays level with the device you’re using . It even comes with a wind shield if you’re working outdoors. It’s well worth the investment and is a great entry level mic since it’s portable and easy to use.
Fantastic, useful
Brought this for podcasts and tutorials but also using for phone calls and meetings at work. Works superbly, great for isolating vocals, very clear, minimal noise. I’ve got it on a boom above me for desk work and it easily connects to my A7iii for shooting video.

Best microphone at this price
Bought this over a year ago and it still remains a great microphone, RODE is in my opinion the best manufacturer for microphones at their prices and you’d be hard done to find a better microphone for the same money.

Brilliant microphone for cameras with a mic input, 10x better then the internal mic. Need to buy a Rode adaptor for it to work with a phone. Doesn’t require battery which is great.

After reading many positive reviews about this particular microphone I decided to buy it for my amateur video recordings since my phone camera isn’t too good nor can I attach wind muff to it in order to prevent wind noises.
I have tried it with both my Android smartphone and my MacBook Pro laptop and I had no issues. However, I have noticed that I would lose a sound output on my device if I use TRRS cable as that is the nature of the TRRS connector where the device would think it has both a microphone and a speaker connected.
It tried recording the sound on a very windy day and the sound was very clear so I am very happy with the wind muff, however, at the beginning I noticed that it sheds quite a bit of hair. The only thing I dislike about this microphone is that I cannot firmly attach the wind muff to it so if the microphone is shaking too much the muff can slide a bit thus letting the wind hit part of the microphone.
Overall, given the price on a deal, I would argue that it is a good value for money since the recordings sound very crisp and clear and the microphone is compact so it isn’t unwieldy.
Audio Level Up
This little mic from Rode and seriously leveled up my audio, especially for my vlogs. I would recommend anyone starting out to grab this mic as it makes a difference to your audio.
I have always used external microphones when I am filming anything on a camera, the internal microphones are just not good enough for anyone who takes filming seriously. This microphone is more expensive when compared to some of the other ones on offer, but I think that it is money well spent. The sound quality is excellent, allowing us to capture audio from a distance. You just have to make sure that the microphone is pointing at the audio source as it does not capture audio well from the side or back, but this microphone is designed to do that. Overall it’s worth spending that extra to get one that will perform well out in the field.
Great compact mic
Works great with GoPro (through their mic adaptor) and Pixel 4XL (through USB-C to jack adaptor and TRS-TRRS cable sold separately). Totally recommend.

Great for windy conditions, the mic moves around a little on the holder but it’s no issue and can be easily fixed in place if needs be. Nice build quality too!

Perfect little mic. I’ve attached it to my DJI Osmo Action to turn it into a little vlogging camera. Sound is warm and rich. It’s short in length so does not appear in view of the Osmo’s wide angle lens with the dead cat wind breaker off.

Great microphone for casual vlogging, audio in editing has almost nothing needed to be done with it. I was outdoors on tower bridge which is very noisy and it coped exceptionally well – very impressed

Immediate improvement to the camera mic
The audio quality is a lot better than the camera mic. SONY did a great job with the built in pre-amp. The noise is well controlled and I am very happy!

Really good quaity sound and very sturdy.
Definately recommend for video blogging etc. I found the wobbly suspensipon mount a bit too wobbly, so I put 2 elastic bands around the U shaped portions which made it much better and still doesn’t transfer noise. You can move the band up or down to adjust the movement.

I needed an on-camera mic for YouTube Vlogging – and the Rode Video Micro seems to be pretty much a universal choice among YouTubers.
I’m using this with a Canon DSLR – and it’s pretty much plug and play. The shock mount work well and the included ‘dead cat’ is great in outdoor situations.
In terms of sound quality – there’s really nothing to fault. It’s so good that I prefer it to using a Lavalier mic for ‘talking head’ pieces.
Is this the best mic for vlogging?
Given its size and price point and overall sound quality I think you can’t beat this mic. Sure there are mics give better sound but they are twice the price and more compared to this guy. It really is small, And the very large furry dead kitten works surprisingly well.

I would like to have been the choice of a dedicated one piece lead that fits directly from mic to Apple Lightning connection instead of joining 2 leads together.

Th great thing about this little microphone is just that… its little. Plus the fact that it doesn’t need a battery. it works straight off your cameras microphone input.
I purchased this over the Videomic Pro+ (250) because that unit is large and I have professional shotgun microphones when size and weight isn’t an issue.
A good lavalier microphone is better (I have several) but sometimes that’s a hassle to set up, and sometimes you just want something small to stick on top of a small camera and go!
And for that purpose, this unit is perfect.
The sound quality isn’t going to scare a professional shotgun mic, but its very usable and much better than relying on the camera’s internal mics.
Its a little bass shy, but in the typical use case for a product like this (talking to camera) that can be an advantage and aid clarity.
Its a very good little unit, and the included ‘dead cat’ windshield is a nice bonus…especially when Rode’s more expensive mics don’t include one.
Any downsides? Yeah, the shock mount is very weak… not that it feels like it might break, but if you move the camera even a small amount, the microphone wobbles like a nodding dog and this creates rumble noises in your recordings.
So it loses a star for that.

Very useful Mic
This mic is a great partner with the Rode Videomic Pro+. The Pro+ is mono only and has its own rechargeable battery. Great for isolating the subject, where this one picks out a little more from the front while giving much more a sense of the space. Stereo staging is very natural and it has a more etched sound than the Pro+. As a combo, they’re great because you get the choice.
The Rycote mount is quite soft so the mic does move about if you walk around with it attached. It has a little more self noise than I’d like but it’s insignificant in most situations. The 20dB boost is very welcome and boosts the audio cleanly which means less noise from your camera preamp. I’ve even used it with my GoPro and it sounds great.
I like its sound. It’s natural and you can plainly hear where anyone speaking is in the sound stage. It’s not too wide and does open up the ‘feel’ of your videos. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you combining channels or even using just one in post production if you want mono and this works well for central speech. Sometimes I record twice. Once for speech in mono and then ambience separately. This means you can get the mic close to the speaker and add ambience at any volume you like later giving you a mono track planted inside a stereo ambience track. This gives both a great sense of space as well as a clear sense of where the speaker is with a stereo ambience track.
It’s a great mic. but buy a deadcat with it.

Great tool for a beginner content creator.
Good quality product. I use it with my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and a Joby tripod with a phone mount. To use it with a mobile phone you need a TRS to TRRS cable, not supplied.

Use it for the garden when filming the kids. The deadcat works great pretty much no wind noise at all. I also quite like the new red rycote mount and cable goes with the red manfrotto logo on my tripods.
Tiny size, big on quality
Purchased to enhance the audio recording on the DJI Osmo Pocket. Its a perfect accompaniment as the size doesnt addto much bulk to the teeny camera. Wind noise is reduced to almost zero when recording on blustery days and much more complimentary when catching voices. At under 40 its a proper bargain.
I was asked to do photos and video at a friends wedding as I am a bit of an amateur photographer. I have a Canon EOS 60D camera with a variety of lenses, I only mention this to give you an idea of the spec level of my bag. I knew I would not be able to get very close to the couple and, honestly, the mic on the camera body is not great.
I picked this mic as it is from a good manufacturer but also because it needs no batteries! It gets powered from the camera body itself, so no more worrying about charging an extra item or carrying around extra batteries. It simply mounts onto the camera body and plugs into the mic input of the camera.
The sound quality is very good. I was amazed by how clear the speaking was, and I was a fair distance from the ceremony. There is also a cover for the mic to reduce any wind or other ambient noise.
At this price, you definitely need one of these in your bag!

Extremely high quality aluminium body, the dead cat works incredibly well (first day out with it, wind was 20mph and I could still clearly hear birds 80yrds away with very little wind noise!).

I need good audio as I film a lot of different scenarios, mostly including a need for decent audio on location too.
I use a mixture of audio straight from this plugged into the DSLR, as well as audio from a Zoom H1n as well!
Really good sound quality, amazing that it has the “Auto Power On” feature, as the amount of times I’ve forgotten and had dead batteries due to leaving mics on is rather stupid.
Also the safety channel mode (recording left channel at normal gain, and the right channel at -10dB) is really, really useful for when you’re not sure what will sound best in post. A little bit more fiddly, but really, really useful.
Extremely impressed with this Microphone. I use it for frequently for an episodic series on YouTube (channel is War Mysteries if you want to hear the quality) and in conjunction with my Canon DSLR, produces beautiful clear directional sound.
The function I wanted is the gain boost, which is something this device offered that other shotgun microphones did not – it gives +20dB and – 10dB gain options on the primary channel (it also can record a safety channel which is handy). This is a great feature because DSLR amplifiers are crap, and by turning this down in the DSLR settings, the microphone compensates with the gain boost – essentially, this gets rid of that annoying hiss you get when you record video and audio with a digital camera.
It works extremely well, switches itself on automatically when it receives auxiliary signal from the master device (be that audio recorder, camera etc) and it has a rechargeable, removable Lithium Polymer battery, which itself lasts between 80 and 100 hours.
Perfect.
Good sound, but need application for mobiles
The sound of the mic is very good, but I have a problem to find an application, so I can have mic and camera at the same time, on Huawey Mate 10 Pro.

either way i’ve got all the things i needed but turns out i need a decent mic on my camera as well as the mic i have on my desktop. Got all this tech and with a few hours of sorting bits out i got a premium set up!
The audio sounded crisp and clean, not going to lie almost as good as my Blue Yeti mic which cost me 80 quid at the time which is a bit annoying. Purely because this was like 30 odd and this will probably be my new primary!
Noisy
Was going to use this for YouTube but the static and background noise is just too intense even after changing my in camera microphone sensitivity settings. I couldn’t even fix it in post production. So I had to buy any other one and use this to record in camera and then one into the pc and align the tracks after. More work but this 20 mic that is usb has less background static noise. Would be good for anything other than recording speech in a room for YouTube videos. Unless you don’t mind the static noises.
Bought to upgrade the sound on my Sony AX-53 camcorder. I’ve been using a Rode Videomicro which was great but I always felt that there was room for improvement.
The VMP+ is that improvement, and what a significant improvement it is.
There’s hundreds of reviews online so I don’t need to mention the operation or sound quality except to add that in this era of YouTube it’s the audio that can make or break your footage. If you’re serious about video then don’t skimp on the microphone.
Great sound for the size and price
This is a great mic for a mirrorless camera like my Canon M50. I’m really surprised by the audio quality. It saved my bacon on a shoot recently when the separate lav mic and audio recorder got turned off when the interviewee stuffed it in their pocket. The rode picked up their audio really well and it was more than useable. Handy hint: to stop it bouncing around so much clip the cable into a slot on the shoe mount clamp wheel.
Not bad
I expected better sound quality, and the stock cable doesn’t work with phones. But it did indeed improve the normal phone recording, after buying an extra cable.

with a bit extra support this would be perfect. very good performance just a bit wobbley. wind noise reuction is good but mic wobbles about a bit in a gust. the indor and stationary performance is as good if not better than the sightly larger rode. what you really need is the mount of the larger mic with the compact size of this one for travelling. cant have everything. I can fit this in a tiny camera bag with a dslr body, 3 lenses, dual battery charger, tripod and cleaning equipment. pretty impressive and half the sixe of my girlfriend handbag!

Product came as described. Included is the VideoMicro mic, the Rycote lyre shock mount and windshield (available for free here but not included in VideoMic Go). No battery required as it uses the camera’s battery. The cable included is only valid for camera but not smartphone (need to buy separate adapter). I’ve used it with my EOS 800D for occasional video filming.
Audio quality wise, clearer as compared to camera in-build mic, however background buzzing noise in a quiet room still audible with the mic. Good volume of sounds that is directly in front of the mic, whereas if spoken from the sides or behind the mic, sound capture will be reduced in volume. Hence best use by speaking in front of the mic. No difference in sound quality between using windshield or not in a wind-free environment. Unable to comment how useful is the windshield in windy environment as I never had a chance to test it.
Build quality is good, the mic is small and compact, and is made of metal. Mount is made of plastic and the build quality doesn’t feel as good as the mic.
Recommend for those who in on tight budget but need decent sound quality for small video production. If needing more superb audio quality I will recommend getting the more expensive Rode Pro version.
Glorious Microphone
What a buy. A massive improvement from the predecessor microphone.
The microphone I had for last year when filming steam locomotives on the mainline under the overhead wires always produced a massive buzz noice during play back.
Now with this one no problems at all after a testing & was an instant success & now I can have confidences in using the microphone while filming steam locomotives on the mainline.
Love this microphone. The build quality is second to none, with a great shock mount to stop vibration being transmitted to the microphone. Unlike the previous version of the mic, it has two great advantages, a changeable cable and a rechargeable battery. Should you forget to change the battery, it also takes two AA batteries or one 9V, so you shouldn’t be caught out. One other great feature is a safe channel, should you find yourself in a noisy environment. It will attenuate the right channel. This was enabled when I first purchased, so threw me a bit at first, with one channel being lower on the VU meter.
Highly recommend.
Rode Video Micro Compact Camera Microphone.
I purchased the Rhode Micro to give me greater outdoor sound quality that I was not getting from the built in mic on my Canon M50 when recording football training videos. The Rode Micro is a small and lightweight budget audio setup that has provided good quality sound to my videos. The Rode Videomicro is a compact mic that does not require any batteries and as proven time after time that it can provide a good quality of sound outdoors in windy conditions. I’m extremely pleased with the performance of the Rhode Micro and would highly recommend.

The RODEs have a good reputation amongst lavalier microphones, and out the box they’re easy to set up. However the instructions are short on information for troubleshooting and you have to resort to YouTube for the answer.
Quality for a good price
I bought this microphone to make small videos throughout my work as a nature photographer. I am quite satisfied with it, because together with my camera and the quality of 4K with the good sound captured by this microphone the result is fantastic. I like this model because it is small and portable and I easily put it in my photographic backpack. It was priced much lower than if it had been purchased in Portugal. I could not be more pleased.
Quality mic which makes a difference
A good quality mic which does deliver better audio. Don’t particularly like the red support which is very wobbly and am concerned it could break in the future. But that aside, well recommended.
Good mic used with phone
It is easy to use, has a nice design. The quality for capturing sounds 1m in front and arround was good, but not excelent. The red plastic stabilizator bends down when you put the dadcat on the mic.
Quality Audio
Fantastic build quality as you would expect from Rode, this mic is really compact and fits in my camera bag very easily. The audio quality is great and the dead cat wind shield is a nice addition, I have tested this mic in a variety of situations and it has not failed me yet.
very easy to use and set up
very easy to use and set up. the fact it runs off the power of the camera. My other mic, the batteries were 10 so this is saving me money. The dead cat fluff for the mic is really handy as I shoot outside. overall I haven’t had any issues with it and seems to be a popular mic amoung Youtubers.
Great mic. Detachable for small storage when traveling

If at initial setup the deadcat looks like its falling off just push it hard all the way to the base of the mic and it will hook there for good. No issues

Decent mic with great build quality
Decent mic with great build quality. The dead cat/wind shield works well. My only criticism is the plastic holder which you use to connect to your hotshoe is sturdy but i doubt it will be something that will last long and have read other reviews where people state that it has snapped and were unable to buy just the holder separately.
Fantastic audio
This mic has been fantastic, I use it on my Canon EOS M3 and the audio is very clear and directional, so all my to camera stuff has a great level. The “dead-cat” cover works very well, I’ve been out in strong wind and it stops the mic clipping in the noise. I would really recommend it to anyone looking to improve their video work with decent audio, it’s so much less faff than a lavalier mic as well.
Performance is much better than the price suggests
Been using it for broadcast tv and it’s quality is fantastic at this price. Only negative is the suspension feels delicate so I do expect this to be the achilles heel for durability but after several documentaries filmed, the verdict is a massive 5 stars!
Great starter mic
Great mic to plug into my camera – Very user friendly and picks up a good sound, however there is a strong hissing sound that I have to work hard to edit out in post, but as a starter it’s great.
What an improvement on the last videomic pro, the auto turn on and off function is brilliant and a much needed addition to the last previous version, this now has USB charging which also a welcome addition. One other thing to note the jack it uses it detachable which means it can be replaced, our previous Videomic pro did not have this and that is actually what broke on it. Over all a great improvement glad we bought it and i am sure the sound quality will be just as good as the last.
If you want to shoot video with your camera, and audio is remotely important, then get one of these. Sound quality is a huge step up from in-camera mics, and with an extension cable you can use it as a boom mic if you need.
I absolutely love that it automatically switches on when the camera starts recording – saved my video so many times.
It has a rechargeable battery that seems to last for ever, and in an emergency you can swap it out for a pair of AA batteries.
