I bought a Samson Q2U at the height of the pandemic when the whole world switched to remote work (and remote podcasting). I used this mic regularly in a fairly open room and its sound has always been great. Minimal background noise is ever picked up and my voice comes through consistently crisp and clear. The stand that accompanies it is a bit on the cheap end, but that’s to be expected. Well worth a $60 investment.

I spent months using lavalier and shotgun microphones searching for the best sound until finally getting the Q2U. The most important aspect of recording voice is eliminatingthe background noise which this microphone does really well. I should have bought this microphone earlier instead of experimenting. Sound quality is super and the build quality great – a heavy metal body. This is the best microphone.

Like other reviews mentioned, this is the best budget mic. So much so that I wouldn’t even call it budget as simply great value.

The XLR input is much better than the USB, so if you can, use that.

Greatest feature is the on/off button.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPicked this up to improve my online teaching and to do some voice over on work items. It was replacing a cheap microphone. This is a dynamic microphone and if you don’t know what that means then this is likely the type you want as it is much more forgiving of a terrible recording environment. It’s solidly built and is a reassuring weight and feel. It plugs in via usb and just works. Plug your headphones in and you have zero latency monitoring and computer audio, no software or anything just plug and speak. The up and down buttons change the volume in your ears not the mic gain. Also has a nice mic clip. The stand is well built but really needs another one or two of the tube extenders to get it to a good height for actually using on a desk. So after tossing this in your cart go and add a boom arm or desktop stand.
The sound is great and my classes say it sounds crisp and clear. If you are upgrading your zoom meetings or online teaching than perfect. Starting podcast? Yup works for that. Starting streaming? yes avoids the poorly treated room. Has the XLR port so you can move up to XLR as part of a growth in your journey.

Amazing compared to a headset mic.
Really impressed with the mic’s audio quality and build quality.
I just use USB but it’s nice that it has XLR just in case.
It’s definitely overkill for voice chat (people won’t really notice a difference over Discord unless you are really close to the mic).

Only drawback is there are no adjustments on the mic (if you were considering a Blue Yeti, those have adjustments for gain, etc) but you can deal with this in your audio settings anyway.

    Really impressed with this mic

I bought this mic as I started hosting my podcast (thephotographywaffle.com), it has proven to be an excellent mic with low noise and a great dynamic envelope. It gives crystal clear sound for vocals and is an absolute breeze to use with a Macbook. I would absolutely recommend this mic for anyone looking to record professional quality sound at an affordable price.

My friend got this mic and liked it so he then convinced the entire friend group to also get the mic. I have had it for around 3 months at the time of posting this review and it is extremely useful. Before my friends complained of hearing my gameplay through my mic and my mic cutting out on my old headset but now I haven’t heard one complaint. Great mic for the price, recommended.

Although this is a great price for a clear microphone, I deduct 1 star for excessive noise / sensitivity. I can hear my washing machine 3 rooms away, keyboard, my wife asking questions conversationally from the other side of the room. There are probably microphones that pick-up less noise in this price range.

It doesn’t get better for a USB dynamic mic in this price range. There are better mics if you have the setup to use XLR, but this beats all the other USB dynamic microphones. Plus this lets you switch to XLR when you are ready. A fantastic entry point to high quality microphones.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHands down, this is definitely the best microphone I’ve ever found to use with Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation software. It works much better, for example, than the more expensive Blue Yeti for dictation. ( The Yeti, despite all of its marketing hype, introduces a lot of background noise which causes Dragon naturally to produce frequent error messages “low microphone sound quality”). By contrast, this less expensive (!) Q2U is extremely directional, which completely reduces all background noise and results in super quick, super accurate transcription when using Dragon NaturallySpeaking software. It is a pure joy to use this microphone for dictation, since I never have to correct words, and the software gets the words right the first time. Much better than the Yeti for this purpose. Keep in mind that in dictation the position of your mouth is all important. Using this microphone, your mouth should be no more than 3 inches away from the microphone, and you should be speaking directly into it. Then you will get perfect dictation quality. So glad I found this microphone!

I was having issues where my coworkers couldn’t hear me so I purchased this mic and it fixed the problem! They said it sounds super clear on their end and they can’t hear any loud background noise that happens in WFH situations. I got an arm that connects to my desk so it doesn’t take up space. Highly recommend for those awful laptop mics.

Bought this because I hate wearing headphones. It is perfect. I can game/video call with speakers at normal volume and the microphone picks up no background noise whatsoever. In my setup the microphone is sufficiently far from my mouth that it’s out of webcam shot and yet the audio is still crisp and clear for anyone else listening. Really easy to setup. My friends were shocked by the audio quality of my voice: “super clear”. Couldn’t recommend more.

I can attest to sound quality of this mic, I used it for both talking and singing vocals and its amazing. Price is right and comes with sturdy accessories. Just do your research first what type of mic you need, this is a dynamic mic vs a condensor mic like yeti. Dynamic mic will capture less background noise and you need to talk close to it hence its good for outside studio and places with no soundproofing. Condensor type mic is very sensitive and picks up all noises from around you so it depends on your usage…

I was able to use this with OTG cable on both Android and IPhone with no need for external power.

This microphone is tough to beat considering its price. It is built sturdy and doesn’t feel like a $70 microphone. I’ve never owned other similar shaped USB microphones so I can’t really make that comparison but the sound quality is significantly better than my lapel, shotgun and headphone microphones. If your primary use is recording voice, you can’t go wrong with this product.

I’m happy with the product. Just wanna inform customers about some info

USB connection is plug and play, doesn’t need any installation
Proximity effect – In USB connection, you need to be close to the mic, sound will reduce drastically as you move away, I’ve heard it’s slightly more forgiving in XLR connection in this regard

Noise cancellation – Not what most people would be expecting, you still hear the dogs and stuff like that.
If noise cancellation is the decisive factor for you, I would recommend Jebra evolve 40C headset, which is expensive than this mic. The sound from that headset was impressive when I heard it over Webex call. But it was different kind of sound, not the kind that you hear from dynamic mics like samson q2u.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis guy is almost unconditionally one of the best beginner podcasting microphones out there, its cost effective (when it’s correctly priced), has usb for absolute beginners and XLR for nerds and more advanced users who choose to hook it up with their audio interfaces and get excellent results, bear in mind however, the xlr sound is better than usb because of obvious reasons of better preamps in some of the dedicated audio interfaces, however this does not in anyway hamper its usb usability, its really really good. Its worth mentioning here that this microphone still outshines sound wise, its newer counterpart the Q9U which is an absolutely terrible sounding microphone without the mid boost being engaged, its primarily attracting only those who clearly want to buy a microphone for a certain look, otherwise the Q2U is an all rounder genius that holds its ground really firmly and even gives its immediate competition like the ATR-2100x fom Audio Technica a run for its money. Also this comes along with its accessories, the desktop stand is not a very good one but it does the job if you absolutely don’t have the resources to spend more on anything else, however any of those cheap spring boom arms can handle this microphone just fine, do remember that this microphone is really bad in the plosives department, so u will need a foam windscreen with it, which is also included in the package and is a huge help. Overall this is a great microphone and can cater to all needs of a beginner or even an advanced user if they are looking for good sound specifically and not the looks, personally I don’t see any problem in the looks department too but people find the broadcast looking microphones a bit more attractive, however they compromise with the sound big time. Happy Recording!

Not only is the sound quality from this microphone great, it’s a dynamic microphone, meaning that it picks up less background noise than condenser ones. My biggest problem with other mics like the ones made by Blue were that they picked up everything, whether it be the sound of my computer’s fan or the cars passing by right outside my window. This thankfully gets rid of the issue and comes with a lot of accessories, though you will need to mess around to find the proper spot where Q2U picks up your voice.

I’ve picked this up to use for professional purposes for voiceover work, and I put it to use out in public spaces and in cars, when I’m in a pinch.

Given the rigors I put it through, the sound quality holds up extremely well, considering I use it for unconventional (and mobile—not cell phone, but for non-indoors stuff).

If you plan on taking this out of the house, though, I’d get a smaller USB cable.

    Using this mic for podcast.
Know I could have paid three or four times the price, but not sure the difference in sound quality would be measurable. It includes a cover which does a good job of distributing the sound and preventing pops. Be forewarned you need good mic etiquette for proper sound quality. (Keep three to four fingers away from the mic at a slight angle and do not move around…) The mic stand is okay, but will fall over if you strike the cable.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThe Q2U delivers a balanced and neutral sound. Having a USB and XLR dynamic microphone is not a joke, and professionals in the audio industry should consider it.

1 – There is almost no white noise.
2 – It accommodates speech as intended. ( If you talk less than 5 inches away from it, preferably 3, you’ll get the most out of it.
3 – It is heavy and stiff.
4 – BEWARE, because I’ve tried contacting the samson support as I’ve already ordered the same mic before. I used it for less than 6 months and I dropped it on my desk more than 3 times and didn’t want to work. I hope this one wont fail. So samson, come on, could you please make sure that your customers have a way to reach ou to you more easily?
5 – If you are looking to stream or podcast, this is the mic. To sing, record instruments or film, this is not the mic.
6 – I recomment the samson Q2U over any other expensive gaming brand microphone that teen gamers fondle over. This is a serious mic, made for serious people, meant to be used by anyone that understands how to plug a usb cable into a usb port.

By the way: This microphone doesn’t require 48V phantom power. All you need is a usb port. And there you go. You got it.

    🙂

One of the few, good, USB dynamic mics.

Because its dynamic you can use it closeup for a podcast and it will reject most of the room sound, greatly improving the sound from the microphone. Note that the stand is quite short- worth considering a larger one, and a proper popshield.

I have recommended it to three other people, and they all love it.

  50. Vera says:

Bought this mic 6 months ago and haven’t regretted the investment. I use the XLR output for recording and USB for calls with clients or teaching orkshops. It works great both ways and I really appreciate the noise rejection (my cat especially).

The built quality is excellent and sound quality is VERY good at this price point, no matter what some of the other reviews say. True, the included accessories aren’t the highest quality but they are more than DECENT and seriously, for this price I wouldn’t even expect Samson to include any! The extras (table stand, XLR and USB cable, foam windscreen) make this neat little mic the perfect starter kit for those who don’t own any audio gear and don’t want to be making an investment right away.

If you’re at the beginning of your audio realm journey and are trying to decide between a condenser and dynamic mic, I’d give a strong consideration to purchasing a dynamic mic first because condenser mics really do require an extremely quiet, well sound treated room, otherwise you’ll just end up with very bad audio even from the most expensive condenser mic.

my blue yeti broke and i didnt want to spend another 100 for a mic, got this and it sounds just as good if not better than the yeti, i use it for podcasts and recording videos/audio. i’d prefer a headset mic for gaming with friends because its easier to set up (just put the headset on instead of trying to place yourself close to a mic stand) but the few times i had to use this to play with my friends they thought i sounded amazing

Previously I had used condenser mics, but none of them were good with noise cancellation.

Good price, good quality, and it was immediately recognized by my system, and doesn’t require any initial or constant fiddling with sound device settings to work.

The stand it comes with stock can be easy to tip if you set it on your desk. I find an arm suspension stand to be preferable to avoid constantly bumping the mic/stand over. That being said it does seem to readily and easily attach to third party stands with no adapters needed.

I recommended this microphone to my brother instead of a Blue Yeti because I knew you wouldn’t need software for it to sound decent and is a nice combo with a boom scissor arm. the only downside to this microphone is that windows 10 always resets the settings to 100 which makes the microphone sound very boomy and uncomfortable up close. which is bad since this is a dynamic microphone, you should be up close to it. this microphone is intimidating because it looks like a stage mic but trust me you’ll get used to it and thank me later.

I cannot say enough good things about this microphone. The fact that I can listen with my headphones and ear buds while streaming makes it great. USB connection makes it great. XLR cable into a future mixing board even better. This is not a lightweight mic but that did not matter because I have it on an arm about 2 inches from my mouth. I did test it, you have to have it close to your mouth or it will not be as “loud” or clear. I plugged in the USB cable and it was recognized in Streamlabs OBS without any issues. I recommend this mic.

Buy audio interface. I recommend the ones from Focusrite, but with dynamic mics and their low sensitivity it really hardly matters what to choose. You will need preamp anyway.
Buy preamp. I recommend SE DM-1.
Buy a nice cable with EMI and possibly RF shielding. Included cable is very bad and acts as radio antenna—you will get tons of buzzing due to electrical interference. I recommend Mogami XLR cable with Neutrik connectors.
Buy Shure A81WS windscreen, and replace whole microphone head with it. This will help with sibilance and plosives, from which Q2U suffers a lot, completely eliminating this issue.

This setup will be pricy, but interface, cable, and preamp are unavoidable with this type of microphones, and windscreen raises the price of microphone itself slightly. It makes sense to do this upgrade to make your setup more futureproof and prepared for possible microphone upgrade, and to unlock the potential of Q2U, as this mic is really wonderful, and any mic under 200 will show diminishing returns with unnoticeable little differences.

High quality microphone for voice recording. Beware, though, that this thing is *extremely* sensitive – it will pick up the sound of air coming out of the vents of a central air condition system. You really need a sound-proofed environment to use it properly.

I bought this because I couldn’t get rid of the electronic buzz that accompanied built-in microphones, and even a condenser-type external microphone I bought. This gives crisp, clear sound.

I didn’t give a 5-star rating because the stand that comes with the package is total garbage. It’s sturdy enough, but I can’t believe it was designed for this microphone. It’s almost impossible to balance the mic in it, and it will fall over at the slightest vibration when using an add-on pre-filter. Get another stand and you’re in business.

The audio is fantastic! and way better than a blue yetti or any other condenser mic because it does a great job of noise reduction.
This is probably one of the best sound quality to money value that any other dynamic mic out there can get.
    Highly recommended.

    Great audio for the price!

I have used this microphone for about 8 years now. I have pretty consistently recorded a podcast almost every week since then and this microphone just now broke down this week. It’s been an amazing tool. I’ve recorded about 500 episodes at well over 1,000 hours and it’s never let me down. Both the usb and xlr modes work well. I’ve used it for live shows and left it out in my truck in sub zero temperatures. I’ve dropped it lord knows how many times and even got it wet once. It’s amazing that it lasted as long as it did. I’m going to buy another one. I highly recommend it.

    Frs “Homeoffice” zwei Mikrofone bestellt.
Das Samson ist super, weil es kein Rauschen mit sich bringt, die Stimme sehr natrlich klingt und vor allem auch “nah” !
Zum Podcasten einwandfrei! Zu Musikaufnahmen etc. kann ich leider nichts sagen.

Records nice with USB cable plugged in to your laptop, doesn’t cancel surround noise much BUT.. if you edit the recording with audacity or any other software, you will be amazed to hear your own voice.
Nice product but the price is a bit too high in INDIA I bo6it for 15000 INR now its just over 7k

Nice product but the price should be around 6 to 7 thousand INR

This microphone is solid and sounds amazing. Can be used with a XLR cable too to increase the mic quality!
