Bought for our 14 year old grandson, he loves lego construction and this has been a good challenge for him. He did have an issue with one piece breaking (it was a cosmetic piece and not integral to the workings of the clock) but it was quickly remedied after careful glueing. The only thing that could improve this/these item/s would be the inclusion of the fittings needed.

Instructions are great as well as quality of parts. I have not been able to get the clock to work consistently. Fun to put together. Update: Was able to get it working, lots of patience and some re-enforcement on the back side where it mounts to the wall was needed to handle the weight of the bag. I was able to get it to work with 1.5 kilo’s. Also, part a2 was hitting gear d1 and required some modification.

This is an amazing clock kit, complex and frustrating to assemble at times, but worth the effort.

If gifting to someone, I’d make sure they’re reasonably mechanically minded and competent with their hands.

Some of the more cryptic pages in the instruction book, especially relating to the routing of cords and string were a real head scratcher. Use common sense and study the diagrams carefully. Cords need to be wound around spools in both directions to get up and down movement on the cords for the power gear and the balloon.

There is an online version of the manual, which helps as you can magnify some of the complex illustrations.

The manufacturing isn’t perfect and you’ll need to use a small spot of glue or a craft knife in places.

Make sure to sand and wax any moving surfaces as friction is the enemy here. The complex gear train will compound friction and stop the clock. Less friction means less weight required to drive the clock, which means less stress on the wooden frame and longer reliability. I got away with about 900g for just the clock and 1600g for the clock with the balloon mechanism engaged.

Get the clock fully working before tackling the balloon, which is counter to the instruction manual, but I think makes it easier to ascertain where problems might be.

It looks stunning when assembled and is very satisfying to watch it ticking away and the balloon doing its thing.

It’s not particularly accurate as expected, and I wouldn’t have it running continuously, as I’m sure the wooden parts will wear or warp pretty quickly due to the hanging weight. I might only attach the weight and run it when I have interested visitors.

Overall, a stunning bit of engineering and a striking functional ornament for the wall.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersI don’t do reviews, but in the case of the Ugears aero clock I just had to make an exception.
The design and construction of this kit is definitely on another level. You get what you pay for in life. The build quality is of this kit is at the highest level.

All I would say to would be buyers is take your time. Yes you could probably have it all together in a far less time than the 11 hours indicated by Ugears, but the result would certainly not be a working clock.

Care and attention to detail are required. Sand all rough edges and pay particular attention to those parts with mating surfaces. Anything that rubs against or contacts with another part benefits from more attention when sanding and waxing. The smoother the better.

The instructions are excellent, but in my case I had some difficulty in understanding the cord winding. Youtube did however quickly solve my problem.

The end result is fantastic. Visually a work of art. A work of art that actually keeps good time and a pleasure to watch as the hour sees the balloon quickly descend from its slow rise over the hour.

Personally I would not consider this kit as complex. Not for a child that wants quick results, more suited to teenagers and budding teenage adults who want to spend time creating something to be proud of. If you
take your time and follow the instructions carefully you will love what Ugears have helped you create.

Looking foward to my next Ugears kit. Have made many hints to Santa

Bought to keep me quiet during lockdown and it certainly kept me amused.
Everything is supplied (bar the odd squeeze of super glue!) but all axles, parts that may rub together a bit etc. need to be sanded, smoothed and waxed.
Everything turned, whirled and the weights (not supplied) dropped, right up to the moment I attached the pendulum.
I think I’ve just about wrecked it while trying to retro-smooth the moving parts.
There’s a Facebook group who show videos of moving completed clocks.

Beautiful model. Im an experienced model maker and this one was alot of fun. My advice, look through the whole manual first, familiarise yourself with it first, its fairly easy but the pictorial instructions for the waxed cord and ballon wire can be confusing. Overall I love this model, it looks fantastic, keeps fairly good time (considering its made from wood) and was a joy to build. U Gears have done a fantasic job.

    Absolutely Fantastic

  25. Anonymous says:

    I absolutely love it!
Assembly was sheer fun thanks to great precision of laser-cut parts. It was easy to find every piece thanks to detailed info in the manual, the instructions themselves were mostly clear – there were 2-3 moments when I had to think a bit longer what to do next (especially when the string/line was involved) but everything could be sorted out.
The clock did not start immediately when the pendulum was installed. Longer inspection revealed that even though the structure was leveled while mounting on the wall, the clock weight (with 1,75kg of sand) that was added at the end of assembly made the right part of the mechanism sink a bit. That was more than could be adjusted using the knob so an extra “pad” was needed above the right screw. Now it is working like a charm and the clock is surprisingly accurate (some adjustments of the pendulum bob were needed). The clock ticking is very pleasant as well.
I followed the advices of other users and every wooden part was sanded to get rid of any unevenness of the surface and wax was also applied with extra care where required.
I recommend it to everyone with a bit of experience in model building.

Excellent and works, but needs a bit of fiddling with, especially the balloon winding mechanism. I’ve done away with the ‘lever’ and made a device to stop the gear axle moving and therefore avoiding binding.

  28. ruby says:

I was bought this kit as a birthday present, having previously enthused about the previous two UGears kits I have made. As with the other kits, patience and very careful assembly is needed to get everything to work correctly. It’s important to make sure each rotating and / or meshing part operates really smoothly before moving on – don’t rush anything!
The instructions are comprehensive but do need very careful reading and interpretation of the diagrams where they deal with the correct winding and routes for the various cords and threads.
Now it’s finished it looks great on the wall, and I love the way the balloon drops on the hour. I do have a couple of gripes, however:
    – There is no adjustment of the pallets relative to the pendulum or the escape wheel. All you can do is adjust the angle of the clock on the wall. In my case, the clock has to sit a a noticeable angle in order to run reliably
    – The clock runs fast by about 13%, despite the pendulum being adjusted to its maximum extent
I also found that I needed over 2Kg of weight in the little bag to get it all to run, so there’s quite a load on the wooden pivots and gears- I feel they may give trouble after a while. Oh, and the little cable car balance weight really needs some extra weight in it to work properly
That said, this is a really fun product, but just don’t expect accurate time keeping!

Bought this for my 13 year old who, if interested, likes to be highly focused. He loved (& sometimes hated) it. Took him about 2/3 full days to build and about 2/3 weeks to get it running perfectly. He says waxing and ensuring parts move smoothly was the biggest challenge, followed by adding to the weight (he used loose change) to get it exact. It’s still running in his room, and he winds it pretty religiously. He says it’s off about 1-3 minutes, but I think that’s pretty amazing!

  34. Katherin18O says:

I’ve built quite a few laser cut wood kits (marble races, clock, toys, etc), and this is the best so far. It was a real pleasure to build. The instructions are excellent. After a bit of fine tuning the clock keeps pretty accurate time, with run times of about 19 hours before I need to reset the weight. The wax stick that comes with the kit is not great (and is very small). Instead of hard wax, I used soft furniture wax, which was great for waxing the teeth of all the gears.

The one small drawback with the clock is the setup of the faces. They’re not easily read from a distance. I’ve set up 15 minute markers behind the balloon, which makes a fun (but not very accurate) way to read the time from further away.

Further note: I have modified the string for the weight, and am now getting run times of 21 hours.

    Excellent kit, and works great!

Grazie, Antonio.

Takes a while, especially if you don’t read the instructions. It is made from balsa wood, which is clear on the write up, but this can be fragile if not handled gently. All in all a good product to keep the mind going.

Absolutely loved building this clock, really took my time and made sure everything was right and it looks fantastic on the wall. Then the problems started, it just doesn’t work, sure the pendulum swings and all the cogs go round but the hour and minute dials just dont turn. Have sent mails asking for advice and they want a video which is all well and good and I have made one but even compressed I can send it so waiting to hear back what they suggest next. I would just so love for it to work properly otherwise its just a nice ornament. Month later and still waiting to hear back from Ugears and now dont even reply to emails.

    Xmas present for hubby.
    3 days to build.
    Easy instructions to follow.
It is getting the time set that takes the skill.
3 weeks and we have managed it perfectly. We have added a bell to the balloon basket so we get a dingle when it drops

This is excellent value for money and as we have mounted it as well it is like a piece of art on the wall.
    Great talking point for visitors

    Highly recommend this clock

Golden Review Award: 35 From Our UsersThis clock was a fun challenge to build and run. Nicely engineered and overall a quality kit. Great for the tinkerer like me and attention to detail is very important. Take your time with this one because clockworks are a bit finicky anyway. All gears need to be clear of burrs and waxed per instructions. Wax all gear teeth and its sides that contact the frame. Use a birthday candle or candle wicks to wax inside small holes for wood bearings. It’s important to get all the gears running free of any binding. You can over wax it though, especially the sensitive items such as the escape wheel and pendulum fingers. Buff or wipe the wax smooth after you apply it. Remove the pendulum and spin all the gears slowly by the weighted bag string to check for any binding. Listen for scraping noises. Bind free gears should work with about 2 lbs. of weight. I’m running reliable at 2 lbs. 6 oz. The manual say 3.3-4.4 lbs. which seems too stressful on the frame. Once the clock worked I lightly superglued all frame parts that supported the spool weight to the mounting holes. My clock is mounted 71″ from mounting holes to floor. I’m also using a bucket of BBs because it’s shorter than the bag by 9″. That gives me an extra 4 hours of run time. The rate of travel of the weight is about 2.25″ per hour. There is enough string on the spool to get 25+ hours before resetting the weight. The manual says 12 hours. The escape wheel is basically a seconds hand with an X on it which makes it easy for timing the clock. One revolution is exactly a minute. Use a stopwatch for initial timing. I found the upper pendulum weight is more of a course setting and the lower weight will fine tune it within seconds per minute. Moving either pendulum weight upwards will slow the clock and vise verse. You can vary the bag weight to get even more precise. So far I’m less than a minute off per 24 hours. Not bad for an all wood clock. The balloon also needs to be jam free and slightly heavier than the counterweight to overcome minor friction. I used all the counterweight disks but one. Any binding can stall the clock gears. The balloon drops on the hour. The clock will speed up slightly for a minute or so until the balloon gears reengage. So precise clock timing needs to be done over an hour or more.
Of all the 3D puzzles I’ve built, this one is by far the best. It will test your patience and reward you when it works. I hope my tips and setup will help others. Enjoy!

    The best 3D puzzle clock

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBe aware that there are NO written instructions, only pictures, and there are NO adequate videos on-line to answer important construction questions. As an example, there are three separate lines supplied with the kit, and scouring the instruction booklet for clues as to which one is which still left me scratching my head. If you are lucky enough the guess correctly as to which line is the right one, good luck figuring out how to route them by studying the pictures. The wooden structure is truly an engineering marvel, and while great care MUST be used when separating the pieces from their templates, the level of precision was remarkable and not one drop of glue is needed. Another example is the rubber bands provided, one of which must be cut to a specific length, and they are not (IMO) adequately distinguishable. And it doesn’t help that there are some of different sizes that are not used. The templates provide “spare pieces” but the one piece I snapped in half accidentally, wasn’t one of them. So the one I assembled in the video DOES employ a drop of super glue. The clock in the video above is the result of two adults, both of whom having significant mechanical skills, working over a three day period totaling some 30 man-hours. The example shown also has a glitch somewhere in the drive wheel (the equivalent of a main spring in a wound clock) that is hanging up and not allowing the weight to be lifted back up to “wind” the clock. Disassembling this beast is a daunting task. The unavoidable looseness that taking it apart will cause, will almost certainly pose problems for the overall structural integrity. Pieces that required some additional mechanical force to assemble will not take kindly to the reverse operation. A working knowledge of Cuckoo clocks would be helpful, and this example probably would have benefitted from a more, no, make that a MUCH more liberal application of the wax lubricant provided. The completed project, while gratifying, is not for the beginner or the faint-hearted.

Sometimes it is was hard to follow the instructions especially where the various cords/strings go, but we managed. Pay attention to de-buring and waxing and it will work. The critical bits I found were getting the balloon and counterweight just right. Not enough counterweight can stop the clock as lifting the balloon is a strain. Too much and the balloon may not come all of the way down and gets in a ravel sometime though the next hour! Pendulum needed a bit of clock oil on it to make it swing nicely too. Some of the gears can catch on each other and stop the clock, so shift them a bit so they are parallel to the body. Really like the clock and it has been running non-stop now for 3 days.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe balloon will rise until it is released by the missing cogs in part no 63, page 21, but just before this stage the counterweight has over-wound above top dead centre on part nos 128/130/131, page 49 and the clock is straining to overcome this addition weight, and stops. I have overcome this issue by removing the last cog on part 63, so the balloon drops as the counterbalance gets to top dead centre. May I suggest your diagram on page 21 showing the position of the gap in the cogs in relation to the minute indicator, part 66, be more explicit AND part 63 in the future has 3 cogs removed , rather than the two as existing? This type of stopping appears to be an issue with other modellers.
The Clock keeps perfect time and now runs for 12 hours – brilliant – thank you.

The model is made from 4mm plywood, the laser cut pieces are easily removed and require minimal sanding. I found this a joy to build but a challenge to get it to constantly run, whilst under construction I would recommend pieces that rub together are sanded to reduce friction. The instructions recommend a 2Kg weight but 2.5Kg was required but never the less a joy to build.

Absolutely amazing kit. The quality is really good, from the laser cut pieces to the instructions. I built over the course of 2 days, including hanging it & on the third day it ran for a full cycle. Wooden clocks can be temperamental and I expect it won’t run perfectly every day but it’s impressive it ran so well without any tweaking.
    Minor complaints are…..
The ballon and the little carriage are not heavy enough to keep the strings they are strung with taught but this doesn’t effect the running, so not a biggie.
One minor mention as a build note……
Stringing the waxed twine is a little confusing. The instructions are solid & I’m not sure they could explain it better. If your building the kit though, just take your time to understand where its suppose to go, as trying to remedy it at the end would be a nightmare.

Making your own clock seems like an amazingly ambitious thing to do, making it out of wood even more so, but this UGEARS Aero Wall Clock Wooden Puzzle makes it possible, even if it doesn’t exactly make it easy.

It’s a surprisingly small box packed with multiple laser-cut sheets of components, an 80 page step-by-step manual and all the accessories you’ll need to make the clock. You might want to source a proper sheet of fine-grade sandpaper before you begin because the little cut piece that’s included isn’t going to last the course. All the pre-cut pieces need to be pushed out of the sheets and a tool is provided for this but again you might want to find something better like a small screwdriver. On the sheet each piece has a number alongside which corresponds to the instructions in the manual – once the part is separated from the sheet there’s no identifying number so take careful note as you go. The laser that’s been used to cut each piece is accurate to a hairsbreadth and it leaves the cut edges very slightly burned which actually gives them a really appealing look – and a slight burned aroma!

Of course the real pleasure is in the process of making the clock and taking the time and care to do a good job, if you want to quickly knock together a working timepiece this kit probably isn’t for you. It’s the kind of thing you’d spend the cold Winter evenings doing and maybe get it finished in time for Christmas. We’re about 70% of the way through as I write and not in any hurry. It’s neither easy nor particularly difficult but you definitely need to take your time to ensure the right part is in the right place and although the fully illustrated manual is very good it can take a few moments and a clear head to get it right first time. You’ll need a good work lamp and your best reading spec’s (if necessary) but it’s an enjoyable and satisfying endeavour.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersUpdate 9/24/2022: It’s been over a year and the clock still runs. Now that it’s thoroughly broken in, I reduced the weight in the bag to about 2 1/2 lb. and it runs fine. I messed with the balloon mechanism and now it works much of the time. It’s still lousy as a timepiece, and it still gets stuck occasionally, but I didn’t buy it so I can get to appointments on time.
    =====================================================

Update 10/31/2021: Almost three months later, the clock is still running. The short video was shot tonight. It has run pretty much continuously, except for the times I forget to wind it. The issue with the balloon still exists (see below). I solved the problem by disconnecting it. So the balloon now just hangs there, doing nothing. The clock is still not good at keeping time, but it happily ticks away with a pleasing tick-tock sound. I wonder how long it will last…
    =====================================================

I’ve built several Ugears puzzles over the last several months. This clock went together as well as any of them, there were no missing parts, and it was fun to assemble. It’s hanging on the wall right now, ticking away behind me as I type. It sounds like … a clock. lol

It does not keep good time, though. It gains or loses several minutes a day. It’s raw wood, so it’s highly susceptible to temperature and humidity changes. The biggest problem is the balloon. About 30% of the time, when the balloon drops, the gear that is supposed to lift the balloon back up clashes rather than meshes with the driving gear, and the clock stops. Yes, I sanded and waxed appropriately, and tinkered and tinkered with it, trying to get it to reliably work. I gave up. So now I think of it as a clever knick-knack…

But it’s cool, I’m glad I got it, and would probably buy it again, even knowing what I know now. Just know you’re buying a well-engineered puzzle that mostly works, and not a timepiece.

Golden Review Award: 45 From Our UsersA great kit, yes it’s tricky, yes it may not fully work if you do it wrong, clocks are a feat of math and engineering, anyone expecting more than a semi functional model is not understanding what goes into a real timepeice. For what it is I loved it, in fact I will make another but decorate this time. It’s not for the feint of heart or beginner yes, however! Anyone can build it if you can follow a picture instruction book and have good glasses. Not all will get it working.

Time to build of 11 hours they say, yes I agree. You need to sand, wax and smooth parts for nice low friction movement. If you just pop out the parts, put them together it could take 3 hours too. It will not work and then you will give it less stars. So this where the advanced builder comes in. Advanced builder will take their time and make a nice model that functions at a basic level.

For the impatient builder you will still achieve a nice model that will not function for long.

Think what type of builder you are and expect the result that you put in.

    The kit:
    Read the instructions
    Read the instructions again
Follow the instructions (mainly for us men who believe manuals are for putting your cups on)
Very well laser cut, did not need a knife in my case
Get more wax and check out YouTube on how to wax cogs
    Wax the cord
Buy good sandpaper and smooth all parts for low friction movement
Sand all cut edges where you can, the laser leaves joins to keep it framed in transit, these need removing
    Have patience
The correct weight will be important in the bag, try lead shot rather than sand
Weight on the balloon counterweight is also important to slow down the balloon drop when running.
Test each cog as the kit comes together for friction and movement
Make sure you hang on the wall to complete, if you try to build first, hang later you will tangle your cords and lines

It’s a model clock, please do expect to get the correct time after 5 minutes of use
It’s also quite sturdy once built

Have fun building it, that is the overall aim, it’s a great achievement no matter how far you get.

Sorry! It’s a long review but I found it a great model to work on and looks good on my wall

This clock has a hot air balloon design, the balloon descends when the hour strikes, then it slowly rises again for the next 60 minutes.

Achtung: ordentliche Schrauben nutzen inkl Dbel!

Hm. Schade.

Super süße Uhr - mit kleinen Macke

There are more and more of these laser cut wood models available, and they are generally good value and very impressive. This one is a little extreme, both in price and in the amount of work required to make it. It is an incredibly complex model and not for beginners nor the faint-hearted!

However, built carefully, it is a very impressive piece of kit, and functions well as a clock afterwards. Alright, it won’t stay accurate for long, but it is very satisfying, and well worth the money.

I loved building this kit, and took some setting up, but dont expect this to keep perfect time, its made of wood after all

I’m a big fan of these laser cut wooden kits, and they get more complex all the time.

This one I think has broken some new barrier of complexity: Even the manufacturer’s think there’s 11 hours of painstaking work in it: You’re building a real, working pendulum clock with two dials, It’s not a sculpture with a clock mechanism in it, and making these models, whilst it’s very absorbing, is challenging in some ways. This one has 320 pieces and is two and a half feet high. I’ll update this review when it’s finished, which will be in a while.

So, I’d have a few previous models under your belt, you’ll already know the deal- step by step, making sure everythings correct before you move on. You can’t really take these back apart, and if one thing is wrong, they don’t work. So be patient. If I was coming to the kits new, I wouldn’t start on this one.

60+ is a lot for some die-cut plywood, of course, but the amount of work that goes into designing them and making them function must be astonishing, so you’re paying for that, really. People really into the hobby will find the expense worthwhile

    Have patience.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’m astounded that I can basically make my own clock! Ok, I’ve not made it yet and for someone thats not much good at D.I.Y (I don’t do much to be fair) this looks a bit daunting. But its a case of following the instructions carefully. I’ve literally just started but the pieces are extremely well cut, and everything looks as shown on the product pictures. This would make a fantastic birthday or Christmas present for someone as well, although I’m keeping it for myself as I want to see if I can finish it and make it work (I’m confident I can).
The only strange thing so far (hence 4 stars) is that the clock dial seems to be going backwards (as the numbers are the wrong way round .. back to front!), so not entirely sure how that’s going to work, but have every faith it will (if it doesn’t then I will be back to amend my review).
Price wise its incredibly expensive at a whopping 62.50 but I do feel that a lot of work and thought has gone into this though not sure its quite worth over 60. I’d also prefer it to be coloured as does look a little done, so once made i’d be tempted to test some paint on the left over bits from the cut outs to see if i can paint some of it – although this one looks a bit complicated and it may well ruin it, so maybe on 2nd thoughts thats not such a good idea.
I would recommend these but feel this should be under 50.

I hope you found this helpful. Please let me know if you did as it always nice to know if my reviews have helped.
