I couldn’t do my SMD soldering without it. Works great. Nice display, focus is good. A very very solid design and very adjustable. The only negitive is the PCB support base is way too small. I ended up putting it on 180 degrees out so it sticks out the back. You have to use a weight to keep if from falling over, but the base doesn’t get in the way and you can work on larger boards. Another issue is the power for the lights with the base reversed tends to get in the way, but given that’s not the way its supposed to be configured, I can’t really complain. Overall, very nice and works well.

Purchased this a while ago as an upgrade from my last microscope and I’m glad I did. Very sharp and clear images with adjustable lighting. I had to put some white paper on the glass of the lights because it has a blue hue to it. Also the original cable I got with it had a short in it, after contacting the seller they sent me a new one that has worked without a problem. Very please with the product and customer service. If you are in the market for a decent microscope, you found it here!

I got this to help with soldering surface mount components (my eyes aren’t what they once were!) and to be able to easily show others what I was doing as my current binocular microscope is too old to put a digital camera onto.

This has excellent picture quality and a very tight field of focus and great magnification…almost too good as it is hard to get a wider field of view. (I did manage to increase that by mounting it much higher with great results!)

The five inch screen is sufficient for most local work and the HDMI output is fantastic! I was even able to stream the camera to another colleague working from home! I did have to put it onto a different “USB Hub”/plug to get both cameras to work.

Overall this is a great model. It sits squarely between the cheap ones (<$75 )that have to be nearly on top of the object to focus and the more expensive $400 and up models. I would highly recommend this microscope for the SM hobbyist as it is robust and easy to work with!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI love everything about it. I just started a new hobby a couple of months ago that requires me to have to solder leads to tiny pcb circuit boards. Even with very good magnifying glasses it was extremely difficult for me and I was very disappointed in my sloppy attempt at this. And so I new I must have a soldering microscope.
When I got the Andonstar I was very impressed by it’s build quality. It has a very smart and functional design and is easy to use. At first it was awkward to try and solder without physically looking at your hands while watching the display. But after a few sessions with it I started to get in sync with it and it became easier.
Now I will never solder again without it.
I carefully researched many competing models, but in my opinion this one is a perfect balance of cost, quality and performance.
    You won’t be disappointed.

Great microscope with a lot of uses. I leave it on the counter in the kitchen and have been using it to read small print to coin ID to looking at medical issue. Yes it is great for soldering too. I can finally see and I put away all of my magnifying glasses. I caught my wife using it to read the expiration date on some coupons.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersAt this $250 price point, there are a lot of digital micro/macro scopes to choose from. I’ve only had experience with a few, but this Andonstar is much better than the others — even better than I had anticipated. There are a lot of things to like about this scope.

First of all, it’s shipped with extremely effective cushioning, and arrived fully functional. Above-average cables & connectors were provided (except for the two AAA batteries for the remote). The power supply is 5V via USB, and a 2-Amp USB wall wart is provided, although I’m running it successfully (in stand-alone mode) on an unpowered USB hub, LCD, LED lights, and all. The all-black finish is (for me) much preferred over the older model’s white finish. The stand and the assembly as a whole are solid and free of wiggles and vibration.

But using it is where I really appreciated Andonstar’s usability. The long lens barrel is extremely easy to handle, and focuses with an easy touch with smooth (and necessary) viscous damping. It’s effortless to dial in a sharp focus, even when digitally zoomed all the way, and there’s no backlash. The length of the focusing tube also puts the small but sharp color LCD at a good height and the long focus removes the lens well away from solder smoke, tools, etc.

Vertical adjustment is in two stages — you can loosen an Allen screw on the mounting bracket and move the whole assembly down (it arrived in the full top position), although I doubt anyone would do this with the supplied lens, since its closest focus is about 2″, which is also roughly the lowest position possible. At this distance (which is still enough space for SMD soldering) the field of view is just under 0.3″ wide on the built-in LCD. The image is bright and clear. The maximum working distance is a bit more than 4.5″, giving a field of view well over 0.6″ on the LCD. This allows for a huge amount of space above the stage, making it ideal for SMD work.

This brings me to the only obvious defect in the design. The vertical adjustment works smoothly from lowest position up to about 60% of the way, and then gets tighter and stiffer until about 80% of full height, where the adjustment knobs require more force than I dare use. There may be an adjustment to alleviate this gradual binding near the top position, but I haven’t looked into it yet. There would definitely be times when I would want to use maximum height, and the feel of the mechanism binding tighter and tighter is annoying for something that’s so smooth and easy in all its other adjustments. Vertical adjustment doesn’t appear to be rack & pinion, and might involve a steel tape mechanism, but we shall see. I will contact Andonstar for assistance, and update this review accordingly.

Plugging the display directly into a 50″ UHD panel (without a PC) looks very impressive. New users should note that the scope initially defaults to maximum sharpening, which gives a fairly horrible image. Adjustment buttons on the remote control can set sharpness to low, medium, and high, and I find that low is quite acceptable. Occasionally medium adds some helpful sharpness on faint chip markings.

There are a few operational refinements I would like (turn off lights in stand-alone mode without turning off camera, for one), but this isn’t something I’ll need to do much. Mainly, I’m just very impressed with the design and rigidity, smoothness of focus, and image clarity. Very satisfied with purchase, especially if I can rectify the vertical adjustment issue, which I’m pretty sure is going to be a simple tweak.

The software, however, is another matter. For starters, a quick Google will locate a link that looks like the needed app, but these links are mostly defunct. There is a Dropbox link in the manual, however, that works. It’s provided in a shortened goo.gl form, and also fully spelled out. There’s nothing else there in Dropbox, however — just the software.

Next, the USB connection to a PC has trouble going through a hub. I haven’t tried it with a powered hub yet, but with a passive hub the camera is recognized but no image appears. If this is your first time using the software, there’s no indication of what the problem might be. Later in the manual, after explaining the software, there is a section on hooking up the scope, with a warning that your USB must be providing sufficient power, although this is described as 5V, which tells us nothing about power requirements. I recommend starting with a direct connect to the PC, and if a hub is needed, expect it to require its own power.

There is no mention of the camera’s required startup choice on USB, in which you must choose Camera Mode. This is fairly obvious, but perhaps a PC can also access the memory card (if any) you have inserted in the scope? I haven’t tried this, but it’s indicative of the somewhat sketchy software implementation. Then, unfortunately, the scope’s LCD goes bright blue, with “PC Camera” in the center, and remains that way until you stop using it with the computer. What a waste of backlight, and needless LCD burn-in.

Once everything is working and some time has been spent getting used to it, the software is serviceable enough. Fortunately, I don’t anticipate using the software a lot, as the scope in standalone mode is so well suited for my needs. Some elaborate counting and measurement tools are provided, which could be indispensable to a biologist counting bacteria in a petri dish, or to someone measuring mesh or denier in textile work. I can see an occasion where I might need to confirm the spacing of circuit board holes, but this is icing on a cake that is already under-cooked. Note that you must follow the calibration procedure for on-screen measurements to make any sense.

Video capture on the PC, so far, is a disappointment, although I don’t anticipate needing to use this feature very much. Although the video settings indicate that 1920 x 1080 is the default, when I click Take a Video, a popup tells me to set video resolution to 640 x 480. This setting is found in File > Video Setting > Video Capture Pin, which brings up a dialog in which you can downgrade from HD to this old PC VGA mode from the 1980’s. But this mode doesn’t do anything, either — thus far I haven’t been able to record. In fact, after trying a few settings, the app began displaying a blank grey image, although the “zoom navigation” window still shows a cursor with the image where it should be. So the signal is coming in from the camera, but it’s not getting to the screen. Closing the camera instance and reopening it doesn’t clear things up, but it’s clear the app has crashed ungracefully. For the time being, I won’t expect to be able to capture video. Oh, and the app doesn’t remember to wake up in the last size you set in Windows — instead it wakes up full screen every time, a nuisance on my 49″ UHD monitor.

Perhaps I can capture video on the scope’s memory card, and skip the entire PC software disaster.

When I attempted to calibrate on the PC, all I could ever get was “Can not be empty” in a popup error window. The procedure is so simple I can’t imagine what was “empty.” After a few such attempts, another crash.

So, with some reservations, my HARDWARE rating for now is 4 stars, pending resolution of the vertical adjustment issue.

If I could rate the software separately, I’d give it a 1, but I am reluctant to drag down the rating for the hardware, which is what I was really buying. I didn’t expect great software, since these video products NEVER come with decent software, although obviously they should, but it certainly could be a lot better than this! As a standalone display microscope this is great, and serves all my needs. A simple app that just does one thing very well would have been far preferable to a fancier one that’s unfinished and crashes all the time.

Fortunately, you can use this without any PC or software, or even with HDMI plugged straight into a TV, either of which produces great results. If snapshots and videos work well when I insert a RAM card, then perhaps the PC app will never be missed. Still, it’s a promised capability that fails badly.

I do specialized repairs on iPhone and I have been able to work comfortably from the first day.
It has good image quality, the LED light can be leveled and moved, it is easy to transport and above all, the freeze rate is almost non-existent.

    Good image quality

I have no plans to solder circuit boards. I will not download the measuring software or use an HDMI monitor. I just plan to copy images from the chip to my computer. I got this scope as a tool of curiosity, and it does that very well. It does not have a light “below stage” as biological microscopes do, but I am working on a hack to deal with that.
The big LCD screen is wonderful and the magnification is adequate for my hobby uses. I love the goose neck LEDs, too.

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersActually surprisingly good for a digital microscope. However, there is one rather glaring problem as delivered. I returned the first one because the stand was crooked and the image out of focus from left to right. Other than that problem I would be happy to use one of these in preference to a conventional microscope because one does not have to stay fixed looking in the eyepiece(s). It is much more convenient to be able to look at the screen without being in a head-in-vise-fixed-position. Unfortunately, when the 2nd unit arrived it had the same problem as the first one. I decided to see if I could fix it. It turns out the problem is with the alignment of the metal hoop that holds the microscope lens and display assembly. It is apparently designed with some slop in the screw holes to make it adjustable, but either they adjust it incorrectly in the factory or it gets moved around in shipping. Four screws hold the hoop assembly onto the up/down adjustment stage. Those screws also adjust the in/out axis alignment of the microscope lens so it can be made to sit vertically. Removing the assembly reveals four more screws inside that adjust the left/right tilt of the hoop, and thus the tilt in that direction of the microscope lens and display assembly. The only option for adjustment is to loosen the screws, position the tilt in the applicable axis and tighten the screws back down. For the in/out axis I found a .039″ (1mm) feeler gauge between the hoop bracket and the up/down stage worked nicely to align it while tightening the screws. For the left/right adjustment I held the hoop and bracket against a flat surface and tightened the screws there. Good enough now. There is still a little difference in focal point between the center of the image and the outer edges but its okay for my purposes.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUpsides: Very clever device and quite well built; looks like it should survive the rigours of moderate lab use. Works really well; love the illumination arms and the working distance is really good to allow a user to manipulate objects under view. For the price, I found this quite impressive and I’m sure it’ll be put to good use for soldering and other small tasks for which I previously used an optical microscope (for which presbyopia and spectacles were becoming cumbersome). Downsides: Does not come with Mac or Linux software, and I could not get the Windows software to work either. Fortunately, native drivers on my Mac were able to make use of the incoming USB video signals, but I was hoping to us the measurement aspects of the software. I’ll try using it with FIJI, but cannot report on success yet. I suspect that most of the time I will use the LCD screen and not bother connecting to a computer screen, instead capturing images onto an SD card and importing for analysis when required. If I find an old unused HDMI-capable screen, I might make a permanent connection via the dedicated HDMI port (though I’ve heard that when this is done there is no LCD display – not yet proved to myself). Hope this review is useful. A.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI received this item on time and well packaged
Setup was very easy just pull it out of the box and plug it in. Pictures are great some of the best I’ve seen. Where the scope is mounted to the base ring is a good distance to work with but for my work I needed more space between the bottom of the scope and the base due to my board holder. I found another ring near the bottom of the scope and moved it up and problem solved. I would like the led lights to be longer through the cable so you can aim them better with taller objects. They don’t need more flex just length for applications like mine and in general. I added polorizer lenses to mine that I made and they worked great with the leads to change lighting to read some burnt chip writing you couldnt see under normal conditions or lighting. All in all great product and very nice people to work with and great customer service. I am already telling people about this scope and how good it is. James Summers

Golden Review Award: 38 From Our UsersI received it earlier this week and have been enjoying it. Mine arrived fully assembled so all I had to do was pull it out of the box and connect the cables. At first I thought I had received a used microscope because it appeared that the viewing screen had scratches but it turned out to just be a film protector and after I removed it the screen was thankfully in pristine condition.

Apart from using the included viewing screen you can also connect the microscope to a pc with the supplied usb cable, or you can connect it to an HDMI monitor or TV with the included HDMI cable. If you connect it to a pc via USB you will need to download the Andonstar software. Mine was in the Chinese language but I followed the instructions from the website on how to switch the language to English. Perhaps in a future update they can make it so that upon installing the software it’ll give you a choice between the two languages.

My thoughts on the USB software is that other than the measuring functionality it isn’t very useful. The viewing screen turns off while you are connected to the PC via USB so you have to play around with the microscope while looking at the computer screen which can be annoying if you don’t have the space to put the microscope near the computer screen. Furthermore the biggest detriment to the USB software mode is that the resolution is limited to 720p which means that if you ever want to enlarge the image you will be limited by the initial low resolution. Also if for some reason you want to record video with this software know that you must set the resolution to 640 x 480, ouch. I didn’t even bother trying that.

I tried the HDMI connection to my 60″ HDTV and while it was interesting it has the same issue of the viewing screen being disabled while you are in HDMI mode. So when analyzing a specimen you have to keep looking up at the TV or monitor while playing with the microscope. It just doesn’t feel as comfortable as when viewing through the included viewing screen.

The features list says you can use a micro-SD card up to 32gb in size. I got a micro-SDHC 16gb card and it works wonders with this microscope. I can comfortably take photos or 1080p videos while analyzing specimens, and when I’m done analyzing I can connect the microscope to the PC via the USB cable and enter Mass Storage mode which basically allows you to transfer your photos and videos from the micro-SD card to your computer.

One big tip I have is that in photo mode if you hit the menu button on the controller you can change the resolution. Default is 12mp but I actually prefer setting it to 1080p. Also very important is to change the quality to Fine, this is especially important if you want to do any enlargement of your photos. Unfortunately it doesn’t save your choices so each time you power up the microscope you have to set these options again although maybe a future update can make it so that it’ll save your preferences.

As for magnification don’t go overboard with the 560x claim. If it had an optical magnification of 560x that would be amazing but I imagine the lenses would be very expensive. No I think the optical magnification is between 100x and 200x and the digital zoom of 4x gives you the 560x on a 22 inch monitor but keep in mind digital zoom is nowhere near as good as optical magnification because digital zooming adds pixels to enlarge the image and anytime you add pixels you are introducing artifacts into the image. In fact I just physically measured (putting ruler to the screen) from my computer monitor a table salt cube from one of my photos produced by this microscope at maximum magnification and what I got was a cube with a length of 2 inches which is about 50.8 millimeters. Table salt cubes are typically 0.3 millimeters in length. So just divide 44.45 mm by 0.3 mm and you get about 170x optical in my case. With 4x digital zoom that’d be around 680x magnification on my 24 inch monitor but I’d much prefer the 170x optical image.

I’ve included some images I took so you can have an idea of what to expect from this awesome microscope. Images are of table salt 1080p, table salt 12mp (4k?), Equate brand sucralose artificial sweetener at 12mp, Equate brand sucralose artificial sweetener at 12mp and minimum magnification, table salt captured by the USB software at 720p, dead grain beetle missing part of its antennaes 720p, blue string on my Cheerio at 720p, and a short 1080p video of ice melting on a partially frozen Eggo waffle.

My thoughts on the USB software is that other than the measuring functionality it isn't very useful. The viewing screen turns off while you are ...
