Used already for a year , sharpening chisels and plane blades. Flatness is good but not perfect. During sharpening, I’m using no more than a quarter of the space for each blade, to reduce the error. Already I have half of it, extra-extra fine. It worn out slowly, but I’ve noticed, this is also depends what type of steel is used to sharpen. The one brings the stone from fine to super extra fine was a chisel made by blade taken from benchtop electric planner, and I guess it was with high percentage of nickel in it. As a conclusion I can say it is most used sharpening diamond stone among 10 other diamond and natural stones and worn part now become the area for fine finish. Reading reviews for most DMD stone brands i can see that some customers just run into bad products due to poor manufacturer quality control. So if you are lucky you will have nice tool in your workshop.

These are solid stones, I actually have a review on the coarse and fine stones but I would like more. I primarily use it for my pocket knives and chisels. I can’t speak to the longevity but it sharpens in half the time of other stones. They say you can use water but I use a diamond sharpening oil which will hopefully make it last longer. Easy to use, easy to clean, and it has a sturdy weight so it doesn’t slide around with the feet on it.

Like the title says these are top notch stones that will last you a very long time. I like using the coarse and then finish with the extra fine for my blades and get great edges that are razor sharp

    Vorteile:
    Einfache Anwendung,
    sehr eben,
    hohe Haltbarkeit,
    recht gleichmiges Schleifbild.

Tipp: Nicht so stark drcken, sonst knnten wohl Diamantpartikel herausbrechen.

I like to pick up ol, cheap handtools from garage sales that just need a little love. The blades are usually in disrepair, and this let’s me grind a new bevel into the blades quickly and easily.

Great sharpening block. Originally purchased to flatten my high-grit stones, but have also used this to do some woodworking tool sharpening (Irwin chisels) & other household items (putty knives, hatchet). Very pleased w/ results. It’s a bit rough for fine woodworking tools, but fine for my carpentry chisels (knowing they may accidentally hit a nail head when used). Great for hatchet/axe, putty knives, and other household items. When the time comes to replace my water stones, I’ll probably go to the finest grit diamond stone – I expect this will give me the sharpness I desire in my fine woodworking chisels & planes.

I like to modify my knives for my use, usually a sharper point and thinner edge, helps with watermelons and such, or to clean game, etc. This stone is very aggressive and it might simply be the right time for me to be aware of it. After using every other stone. Which again, I like to profile a knife for my uses or intended uses and this will give it to you.
All DMT products do a fine job. Again, this is an aggressive stone readily cutting metal off. Which if you let your edge go, or you have nicks and such, thi I believe will clear them up.

These diamond plate sharpeners are something I have been eyeballing for a while now, but I have so many sharpening stones, I thought this would just be a waste of money. Boy was I wrong! What a fantastic addition to your workbench and it gets your knives and scissors razor sharp! Super easy to use, slick design and decent size. The only con is the price point. I think this may be slightly overpriced, but it really works well, so I am ok to overlook this in deference to performance. I have several similar sharpening steels for kitchen knives that work equally well and I should have known that this performance would be on par. I cannot compare to other brands of the same thing, but I think will stick with this brand because I am impressed with the quality. Great product.

It does a fairly quick job of flattening the backs of plane irons and chisels before polishing them. Its not quite as flat as my Dia Sharp Extra Fine grade diamond stone [.0015″/.002″], but not far off from dead flat. It’s my “Go To” stone to find out what the next step is [up or down in grit] with a new blade or iron. All in all, high quality at a still affordable price.

I had a fine one, so I just wanted to add an edge-making stone to my collection, but this is not coarse enough for my liking; I had a bunch of very bad blades. The quality is very good, don’t get me wrong. Very flat surface (flattened the sole of a jack plane with it). However, I don’t know if the one I got is defective or whatnot, but I can see some grooves in the stone (after some use) doing nothing bad to my blades yet, but they are there (tiny scratches 2-3 mm long hair thick).

The edges of the stone arent 90 degrees and sharp they are rounded a bit instead (so not good to make a 90-degree angle around it, but it adds to safety)

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe 120 micron DMT stone differs from the earlier versions with very large crystals more akin to a course sandpaper grit. The problem is there aren’t actually a lot of applications that demand such a course grit in a diamond stone – casual users could use sandpaper instead.

The two main usages that come to mind are flattening the back of chisels and regrinding the bevels of chisels and plane blades – both in hard steels. Unfortunately, diamond stones are a poor fit for concave backs – they tend to naturally “roll” in a lengthwise grind, which can result in *worsening* the back significantly! Back and forth grinding can work, but also takes care to avoid “bumping” the back of the chisel and unintentionally adding a back-bevel to the front edge – again because of the fast cutting this can happen quickly and require substantial work to correct. Convex backs are much easier – but probably don’t require such an aggressive grit.

A better use is for aggressively reshaping the bevel of a blade without risking damage to the heat treatment from a grinder – this can save significant time over the finer grits, but probably only really is necessary if you are frequently restoring abused tools. Note the burr created can be significant enough to cause chipping in some steels (PVM-11 for instance), so care should be taken to work down the grits before breaking it.

I’d recommend getting the Coarse/Find/Very Fine stones first, then working back to the 60 micron/120 micron stones only when a task is presented where Coarse is too tiring and sandpaper would prove too expensive. Note all diamond stones occasionally gouge a line deeper than average, so if you are looking for a perfect polish you might avoid the courser stones.

Received this item packaged in pristine condition. I have a few high end pocket knives. I needed
an high end diamond whet plate. As a knife collector, all must or should know that the factory
edge as to be beveled out before a razor sharp edge, can be made. Excellent for old knives that
needs to be straightened out, so you can begin the honing for a sharp edge achievement. This
diamond plate is the best quality and functional one, that I have purchased. Expensive, yes it is,
for me anyway. Sometimes you get what you pay ( Old Saying )…

Nothing wrong with this product! It’s the perfect and affordable sharpening stone that can take a hit an keep going! I’ve sharpened are heads, machetes, scythes, pocket knives, kitchen knives, and even resharpened some used dull utility razor blades and they all will come out sharp enough to shave hair if that’s your desired sharpness although I wouldn’t recommend that sharpness for some tools like an axe lol. I believe I’ve been using it for close to a year now an other than the ware in cycle that took about 3 days (may vary per user) it still works as good as it did after the ware in cycle. Over all an awesome product an not to mention it arrived a lot sooner than expected too! All stars for this product and the seller!!!

Works excellently with fixing damaged hand plane irons to hand plane soles and quickly restores chipped, kitchen knives. I use it as a cheaper alternative for a lapping plate for my water stones, though the DMT lapping plate has better flatness. I clean it with Comet w/bleach with lightly flowing water after rinsing. It does seem to get a slight brown discoloration even before I used Comet. Alum, from the baking aisle, also does a good job for cleaning when you make it a paste.

Great high quality stone that will take the chisel edge to the next level compared to a 1000 grit trend stone.

I haven’t used water stones, as I prefer the fact that diamond doesn’t need levelled.

I’m happy with how this stone cuts and how the blades perform. I’ll usually strop after it, but it isn’t required.

It’s not cheap, but it is GOOD! And you’ll only cry once.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI’ve been sharpening blades for nearly 70 years. Have used Noton commercial stones, natural Arkansas stones, and all manner of water stones both Japanese and American. These are my current favorites. Most blades need only the Fine and Extra Fine to produce a hair shaving edge. I occasionally go to the Extra Extra Fine for a truly razor sharp edge but it is not really necessary. I have one coarser stone but it is rarely used. I always use the honing fluid also sold on Amazon. I forget the name but it’s a blue ultra light oil and it brings out the best in these stones (actually ground steel plates). Just remembered, the honing fluid is Trend and well worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSo I have had a few lock-back pocket knives kicking around my life for a few years now. One Gerber has been with my for over a decade. Over the last few months, I have realized how I have completely neglected blade care all this time. I use them purely for home use, work use, and have yet had a chance to use them as an “outdoorsman” would… someday!

Some of my knives have gotten nastily damaged and dulled over the years…. some just dulled. I have a “pro” motorized, ceramic kitchen knife sharpener, and out of of desperation I TRIED using it on my oldest Gerber. Nope, can’t barely fit the thick blade in the slots, and even so, the original bevel must be at too large of an angle. It looks like it tried to grind down a secondary bevel. I know that it cuts at 20 degrees.

After research, watching sharpening methods using everything from sandpaper, to whetstones, to splash & go stones, to diamond bench sharpeners, I settled on this one for all my general sharpening. After trying to emulate the methods I had watched, I cannot believe it, but I already have had HUGE results! My oldest most damaged Gerber, pitted, dulled, etc…. After doing the work 10x slower than anyone else, I managed to restore the edge, get ride of the pitting AND properly sharpen the blade all on this stone… Didn’t even use a coarser stone before hand to “repair the edge”… I got it to the point that it cuts through paper smoothly, through the full blade with no jagged tears… I do not have a proper way to strop the bevel off yet, so I did some horizontal blade sharpening pulls, alternating until the bevel pretty much was gone, and I used my work mat in place of a leather strop in the meantime until I can get one…

It can’t arm hair shave very well just yet, but I am sure until I can get more of the proper gear to remove the bevel and I work on my technique, I am convinced I will be able to get to that point. I watched a video of a guy sharpening a blade on this stone, and had such good technique, was able to shave his arm hairs straight away.

I will get there! Meantime, fantastic bench stone! DO NOT BUY CHEAP DIAMOND STONES! Those are not made properly where the diamond is not ionized into the metal, and are just stuck on with adhesive, meaning it will wear down and rub off completely over time. This stone will last for years in comparison!

First one arrived with outside of box intact, inside packaging had been torn and damaged by some other unlucky purchaser. The unit itself had visible dings in the steel and raised bumps associated with the pits, almost like someone had intentionally damaged the surface with a punch.
Second one didn’t look great and felt a little rough at first. Decided to try it out on a chisel, the roughness was gone after a couple of passes and the edge was as I had hoped. I’d give this five stars if not for the hit-and-miss quality control, as others have commented on. Also, the price point is pretty high for what you get; but, considering there are not a lot of options or competitors for this product, if you can afford it, it’s worth the spend.

  41. Steven Hamley says:

Just got this stone today. My ultratech was getting pretty dull so I decided to give this a shot after watching videos that recommended this exact stone. I was afraid when I saw the bad reviews about it not being fully coated or flat. Mine is only missing the diamond coating on maybe a 1/2mm square on the very very corner so I feel like that is more than acceptable. And from what I can tell it’s perfectly flat. It cuts into the steel very well and it doesn’t cut so fast that you would be afraid to remove too much material so I really like that. It sharpened m390 just fine and after stropping the blade it whittles hairs. As does my 154cm Emerson that I just sharpened on it. And let me say I’ve abused that knife every way possible and there were decent chips in the blade that I was able to work out. I’d recommend this stone with a two sided strop and 3.5-1.0-0.5 micron diamond stropping compound. I’ve been able to get knives to shave with simple cheap stones but those edges don’t feel nearly as sharp as this Diesharp stone makes them. Overall I’d buy again. And it’s very heavy so it doesn’t slide around even with decent or light pressure applied. I’m sure this will last me a good while and I like that it’s low maintenance because gosh do I hate oil stones.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI have had and used numerous DMT diamond stones for more than 20 years. I have visited the main office in Marlborough, Mass. where they replaced under warranty a stone which looked like it had the diamonds coming off. They didn’t think there was anything functionally wrong with it but replaced it anyway, and have me 2 free sharpeners of types I didn’t have. They are awesome in my opinion.

That said, I think this is a knock off and not a real one because it doesn’t look like the same quality as any of the other DMT (have 9, 4 continuous diamond bench stones) products. It looks exactly like you would expect a cheap Chinese knock to look. It looks like it was placed on a concrete floor and kicked around for a while. I looked at it under a 10x jewelers loop and it clearly looks pitted and scratched. The edges look banged up. I included a photo of a 20 year old DMT extra fine grit bench stone for comparison.
It’s going back. Uncertain at this time whether I will reorder from Amazon who was the seller. I’ve checked photos of this grit stone and what I think are real ones don’t look like this one. They are etched on the side with DMT, Extra Extra Fine, and 3Mesh 8000 Grit. The surface on the photos looks flawless, not at all like this one.

Update: DMT terlls me that they have not had issues with knock offs and that these stones do not look like their other stones. I have given it another chance and have learned some things in the process.
    1) This stone HAS to be broken in. The literature from DMT calls it “partially broken in” at the factory. Fro practical purposes though you need to fully break in this stone for it to be uselful.
    2) DO NOT USE THIS STONE ON ANYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT UNTIL IT IS FULLY BROKEN IN. (At least as an 8000 grit stone)
    3) you have to be purposeful in breaking it in. Cover every square inch of surface. If you don’t you will, sometime be honing some blade you care about and a part you missed while breaking it in will leave large scratches on it. I took an old plane iron threw it in a jig just to be able to control the surface angle. I was able to flatten out the entire angle on the plane iron. This should not have occurred with an 8000 grit stone. I bought an extra course DMT bench stone because performing this on my DMT course stone was taking too long. I have about 15-20 minutes of contiuous working on this old plane iron and while resurfacing the entire edge angle it is still leaving pronounced scratch lines. It is still a long way from an 8000 grit water stone in terms of honing/polishing an edge. The 8000 grit water stone leaves a literal mirror finish. I judge this to be about like the DMT course stone in terms of how fast and how rough it cuts. The DMT course stone however has been used for years so is well broken in.
I will update further when and if I ever get this to function like a true 8000 grit stone.

DMT replaced this stone under warranty. I don’t of they prepped it more than usually because they told me they do a little prepping on all of them before shipping this 8000 mesh stone. Anyway, the replacement was head and shoulders better than the one they replaced. I’m not sure it’s going to get to the point that it will completely replace an 8000 grit water stone. I will update this review of it does.
I used this on my test plane iron (which is more than 100 years old and a fairly pitted already so the edge isn’t perfect but after using this stone on the bevel and lightly removing the burr from the back, I stropped it with green oxide and then plain leather. It easily shaved hair off my arm. I call that functioning like it should.

The big advantage this DMT 8000 grit has over the water stone is that you can just spray some water on it and touch up a plane iron or chisel immediately. With the water stone it has to soak for 15 minutes and then you have to make a slurry using a Nagura stone before you can use it. While the water stone works better in my opinion, I probably won’t be using it for touch ups any more.

Seems like a cheap knock off but isn'
