DMT D8EE 8-Inch Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond Extra-Extra Fine
The DMT Difference
Diamond Uniformity, Coverage, Surface Flatness
DMT uses micronised monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface. No other diamond sharpeners offers micronised monocrystalline diamond and most offer the lesser grade poly-crystalline diamond. Mono-crystalline is like an ice cube made up of one particle holding its form while poly-crystalline is like a snow-cone made up of many small particles that get sheared off during use.
Coverage: DMTâs process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.
Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool.
Choice of Diamond Surfaces
Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.
Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.
HardCoat, DMTâs newest proprietary surface, is able to withstand the rigours of ceramic sharpening, providing an even longer service life to the sharpener.
DMT Commitment
DMT is committed to providing the best diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, we will replace it.
Benefits of The DMT Difference

Portable Sharpeners
DMT offers an assortment of very portable, hand-held sharpeners that provide easy storage in home, shop, truck, back-pack or RV. Made to sharpen an array of knives and tools while portable enough for on-the-go sharpening. Interrupted surface models include Diafold, Mini-Sharp, 4-inch Diamond Whetstone; continuous diamond surface stones include 3-inch Credit Card Style, 4-inch stones and Mini-Hone sharpeners; one Double Sided Diafold is available in the HardCoat diamond surface, designed to withstand the rigours of ceramic knife sharpening.
Sharpening Steels
Most steels are designed to align a knifeâs blade, but DMT diamond sharpening steels in 10-, 12- and 14-inch models will both align and hone the blade. All are continuous diamond surface but one 12-inch model is offered in DMTâs HardCoat diamond surface, specifically designed to withstand the rigours of ceramic knife sharpening. For those who wish to sharpen with ceramic, DMT offers a 12-inch ceramic steel sharpener.
Bench / Counter Stones
DMT offers a nice selection of diamond bench stones from 6- to 12-inch lengths of varying widths to accommodate home, sport and tactical knives along with a mixture of DIY and woodworking tools. Models include interrupted, continuous and one DuoSharp model in HardCoat diamond. Models include Diamond Whetstone, DuoSharp and Dia-Sharp bench stones.
Guided Sharpeners
If you are unsure about sharpening, try one of DMTâs sharpening systems to assist with proper sharpening angles. All systems revolve around the 7-angle adjustable blade guide utilising either 4-inch diamond whetstones in the Aligner models or Double Sided Diafold Sharpeners in the MagnaGuide line. The blade guide can also be used with DMTâs bench stones.
Care and Use of DMT Diamond Sharpeners
All models are designed to be used dry or with water so there are no messy oils and extensive clean up to worry about. Always clean the DMT sharpening surface after sharpening. Rinse surface with water and wipe dry. After several sharpenings, clean more thoroughly with a mild abrasive and brush; rinse surface with water and wipe dry.
Always put away dry and store in a dry environment. Use leafing (paper towels, cloth, plastic storage bag) in between your bench stones to prevent abrasive sides from rubbing.

About Sharpening with DMT
Get the Most out of your DMT Sharpener
There is a âbreak-inâ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit for damaged or dull edges and work to finer grits. The work the edge is to do will help you determine the grit needed: Rough work, end with coarse grit (cutting cardboard); finer work, work through finer grits (food preparation).
- Initial break-in
- Light strokes to sharpen â let the diamond do the work
- Faster than conventional sharpening methods
- Rough work â coarser grit
- Fine work â finer grit

This is fantastic and removes metal aggressively. It works well when I need to set the bevel or lap the back of my tools. This saves me time and effort compared to sharpening on my previous water stone.

I decided on the DMT brand after good feedback from more experienced woodworkers.
1) they were right, this is fantastic, especially followed up with extra or ultra fine. It also never needs flattening like a water stone.
2) buy a bottle of Hone-Rite. It’ll prevent rust and keep the plate like new foreve

It took me all of 5 minutes to re-establish a new, flat, primary bevel on an old plane blade with the X-Course diamond plate. Easier than I had expected, when using an ‘eclipse’ guide to keep things square and even. I then went on to use my other stones to get things razor sharp. This diamond plate is far easier than any low-grit waterstone I’ve ever used. I’ll probably buy a few more grits from DMT and replace some of my other stones. Highly recommended!
I bought this product based on reviews, and at first was not sure if I was over spending, since I am a hobby woodworker. But once I received the product, I was pleasantly surprised at how well built it was. In fact, I was amazed how HEAVY the bench stone is! Indicates that the material is really solid and dense. With this, my sharpening system now consists of only two items: A regular Oilstone (coarse), and this diamond stone, and I get all my cutting edges razor sharp. (Off course, there is the trusty leather strop at the end, and for touchups).
8-inch diasharp extra extra fine: a minute or two of honing a big Japanese chisel and it’s easier shaving that any razor I’ve ever used. I wouldn’t use this anywhere near my neck – just shaved some hairs off my arm. Not to mention low effort shaving of infinitesimal and not so small shavings from a maple violin neck. Admittedly I spent time in the past with other stones/slabs getting the chisel ready to accept such a fine edge, still it’s amazing to me even with decades of woodworking experience how sharp it gets from the extra extra fine diasharp.

Great quality! So happy I finally took the plunge and bought one! Now I need to buy in fine/super fine. I already have the wave sharpener in fine and it really does a fantastic job on gouges, so won’t hesitate to buy more when I can afford to.
The first one I recieved had a tiny imperfection (a bump in the casting) but Amazon returns are so easy I got a replacement within a couple of days. The plate itself is great and cuts really nicely. I used to use nothing but water stones but having to flatten them all the time becomes a real pain. These dimaond stones are worth the investment and I’ll be replacing my last two water stones once I have more funds.
A very good plate.
cuts well and cleans up easily.
First I own MANY DMT Products – I have been buying DMT products for 25 years, and if I guessed I own over 30 of their different products I still might be underestimating. I have a woodworking shop plus I do a lot of other sharpening around the house – including the need for sharpening yard tools, scissors, kitchen knives, etc. There are many times I like the speed and low maintenance of diamond based sharpening products, and for many applications where the most refined polished edge is not always required it is the best solution in my opinion. I also own a full regimen of waterstones and sharpening jigs or honing guides that I also use on some of my woodworking tools.
I recently added a full set of these DMT 8″ Continuous Diamond plates to my sharpening regimen, as I wanted something to sharpen my kitchen and pocket knives instead of my smaller handheld hones, and my waterstones. I purchased the Extra Coarse, Coarse, Fine, Extra Fine and this Extra Extra Fine versions of these plates. I have had experience with all the other DMT grits in other tools and plates over the years, but this marked the first time I would purchase and Extra Extra Fine grit from DMT. I read a lot of mixed reviews about this plate on the net – with hot and cold feedback regarding the flatness of the plate, the QC of the diamond distribution on the plate, and other factors. I was interested to see what I would get when I ordered it. Note I have also had experience with their Duosharp bench plates / stones also – the ones with the “interrupted” surface and circular holes of no diamonds.
Well, the first DMT8EE that I received was interesting. Not having another Extra Extra Fine plate to compare it to, I was initially a little puzzled upon inspection of the plate. My plate seemed not to have any grit distributed on the business side of the plate. The back of the plate was clearly labeled stating it was not the sharpening surface. But the side that was supposedly the sharpening surface was just as smooth as the back of the plate. When I attempted to hone a pocket knife on it, the plate was getting scratched, and I could feel a little feedback, but it just did not feel right.n This could not be the EE plate I had read about…. and having read feedback about the grit distribution being inconsistent, and even one review that claimed their plate had NO grit, I was immediately suspicious.
I called DMT, and honestly trying to figure out if this was a defective plate over the phone was a non-starter. They offered to have me ship it in and have a look, and I thanked them for the offer. Being a new plate, what I did instead was order a plate from a different source. When this one came in, it was a completely different plate with grit you could both see and feel on the business side of the plate. Realize these EE plates have a very fine coating of grit, but it should still be detectable. At that point, I judged the initial EE plate as defective and one that should not have passed QC, and returned it to Amazon.
As far as how well the new EE plate works? Well, it does seem to do a decent job at a final hone on my knives. Realize I would not buy this stone if your goal is to get a mirror / polished edge like a 10K waterstone would, but it does bring up a sharp honed edge. Most in the know realize that diamonds give a more “toothy” edge than waterstones if you progress through the finer stones, but for my purposes a toothy edge is OK for my pocket knives or kitchen knives. I sharpen or hone those knives more frequently anyway, and the convenience and speed of the diamond plates is a nice trade off in that respect.
Bottom line – I think these DMT continuous diamond plates are good. But I also have found out you have to keep an eye on the quality of the plate you get, and don’t be afraid to “try again” and replace it if you got one with an inconsistent grit distribution. I had the same experience with the DMT “Fine” plate I received – the first plate had very uneven grit distribution, and some spots on the plate we raised and the grit felt almost coarse. I realize there is a “break in” period for the plates, but this was beyond just “break in” required – it was just a poorly manufactured plate. Also, pay attention to the flatness of the plate, and check it with a straight edge. As well as a grit distribution issue, my Fine plate had a bow in it.
Whether I like these DMT continuous plates more than the DMT plates with the “holes” in them for knife sharpening – the jury is still out. For chisels and plane blade bevels, there is no question I want a continuous surface for touch ups or bevel setting. But for knives I am still in the process of judging which plate I like more. Perhaps I will update this review at a later date when I come to a determination.
Good plates, recommended – but pay attention to plate flatness and evenness of the grit distribution.
Thanks for reading.
Good price for DMT extra coarse.
If you want to stop using a grinder, this is the diamond plate to buy, provided you also have coarse, fine and super fine plates. Or if you only use carbon & A2 steel blades and want an extra coarse to cut bevels, using oil stone and strop for the rest.
What is there to say, these are fantastic. I bought this to lap my waterstones. It cuts but the stones and dull knives very fast.
This coarse stone is perfect for truing water stones and wood plane bases, a job which quickly wore down my extra coarse stone. The final finish of course needs serious refining with less coarse stones, however it does what one would expect from a very coarse diamond stone.

Excellent product. However, coating is missing near one edge and coating came of on few minuscule spots which is manufacturing issue. I think this plate and grit is very nice and ideal for doing fine honing but also takes material off fast enough that it can be use as shaping, just takes a bit longer which is good enough if you want to buy only one diamond plate that can shape as well as finish. If you want to buy only one diamond plate because you have finer and coarser wet stones (as I do) then I would recommend this grit. I thought hard about which stones/plate to buy so here’s what I got for sharpening my chisels and smoothing fountain pens: rough grit cheap diamond plates from China on eBay for few bucks, then this 600 grit DMT D8ME plate, then a combination 1000/6000 grit stone (I recommend CERAX brand or King stone from eBbay. I think Cerax is better) then finally I bought a 12000 grit stone from eBay (I recommend CERAX, the other option is Sharpton). This way I have one quality diamond plate (diamond plates cut faster which is neither good nor bad) and then I have the finer whetstones for producing quality polished mirror finish.

I got this to dress plane irons and chisels, and to flatten/produce slurry on the 6000 grit Japanese water stones I finish with. If a complete moron like me can produce a usable edge on a
Water isn’t the best lubricant; I ended up replacing it once because it turned a murky red color. I haven’t seen this explicitly stated anywhere, and web searches turned up nothing, so I was pretty deeply confused as to why it was changing colors on me. So far, lubricating with Simple Green has kept the replacement clean.
