EVOLAND Fire Striker Starter Kit, 4.56″ Length Ferrocerium Flint Camping Emergency Firestarter, Survival Firesteel Lighter for Camping, Hiking, Include A Whistle:

Who doesn’t love a flint, I’m not sure who was more exciting to go and test it out in the garden more, me or my 8 year old son!!

This smart looking flint firestarter comes with an emergency whisle too so it can help you out of a bad situation.

The first few times you use this you are taking off the paint layer which covers the flint, so once there is a patch exposed you can get some big sparks off it without too much effort.

We tried to light sime dry leaves, shavings and paper with no joy but then tried a ball of cottonwool and it was in flames on the first strike. We could then build a fire around it. I have attached a video clip of my son striking the flint to show just how easy and effective it is.

The whole thing seems well made and can work in the rain also, if you have some dry lint or cottonwool you can start a fire to keep warm and make a cuppa.

    Sparks will fly!

This is a must have survival item. The rod is made of Ferrocerium and has a black protective coating. Once you have scrapped a few times bright shining metal will be seen. Scraping now will yield a shower of sparks. This will ignite your kindling. The kit also includes a very loud piercing note at 120dB. The ferrocerium is mounted onto a T bar handle which aids the stricking. A short cord keeps a little multi tool steel plate which has a saw, bottle opener, hex bolt spanner, and ruler. You can use the saw section or back of the ruler to strike the ferrocerium in a continuous downward stroke to create sparks. These in turn are so hot they then ignite the tinder. It works very well and will be a life saver if you have to use it in earnest. Happy to highly recommend, Andrew

I’m not an outdoorsy person, nor am I a survivalist, but I did decide last year that a BOB (bail out bag) wasn’t too extreme an idea with the way the world is these days. Alongside the obvious – clothes, meds – I wanted a small collection of survival essentials, so ordered this to put with a couple of bivvys, a shelter and some paracord etc. rather than just relying on a lighter. Having never used one before, I can say that you absolutely need to practice before heading off into the wilds with it. Getting it to spark is relatively easy, but there is a knack, and I spent a good hour in the garden learning exactly what the knack is in practice having watched some videos online – as others have mentioned this doesn’t come with instructions.

Overall, I’m really pleased with this, and it’s gone in the BOB in the hopes that I’ll never have to use it for survival purposes, but with the confidence that I now could if I needed to.

No harm in having a little extra fire starting kit and this is perfect for it. Very light weight and doesn’t take up a lot of space so great to fit in a backpack. Does exactly what’s needed, it lit a fire quicker than I expected. It feels well made and durable. It also comes with a decent whistle that is quite loud, handy if you get into any danger. The set is a great substitute for matches and lighters for that wild camping feel.

Handy little tool for a wild campe

I’d argue this is an essential piece of camping kit and yes, matches or a lighter will be easier to light a fire, but if those fail or run out, this will do the job – though I’d always recommend a bit of practice first to get the technique down!

This rod is a good length and the finger grips at the end enable a comfortable hold. The included striker is also a good length and features a bottle opener to enjoy a celebratory drink after successfully lighting the fire 🙂

I think it’s also very good that the emergency whistle that has been supplied is not plastic, which probably would have been the cheaper material. The case is made from metal, so it should take a few knocks and last well. A strong blow of it and there is a shrill ear hurting blast.

If you are looking to go camping or learn some bushcraft skills this should be definitely considered.

Well Made Fire Striker Kit With Metal Whistle... I'd Recommend Practicing Firs

In the kit you get the striking rod with lanyard, striker and a whistle.

The striking flint rod is made of ferrocerium, which is an alloy of cerium, neodymium (the metal in high strength magnets), other rare-earth elements, iron and possibly magnesium. The rod is about 7cm long and painted black, but this soon scratches off. The flint rod is offset to one side to make striking somewhat easier.

The striker has a centimetre scale and also a scale for 5km against a 1:100000 map, although if you have such a map, the map will carry this scale anyway. The scale is stamped, but the angle was slightly off, and the metal seemed to be pitted under the paint on one side, which is a shame because this tool works well for lighting fires. There is a bottle opener on the side that could probably double as a 7mm wrench.

The tool works well to light a fire if you know what you are doing. The most important part is the tinder. I used some lint from a tumble dryer, but cotton wool works equally well, and another trick is to use the material from inside a woman’s sanitary product.

Make sure that you have some small kindling available, some material to accelerate the fire into a small blaze, such as fine wood shavings or paper. Put the tinder into the paper and make a little nest. Put the end of the rod into the tinder, preferably hard to the ground. Draw the metal edge of the striker down the length of the rod sharply and quickly to generate sparks into the tinder. Do this as many times as it takes to get the tinder burning. Feed in small dry twigs or kindling and grow the fire from a small one to larger adding bigger twigs carefully making sure to not put the fire out. I used the serrated end of the striker, that is labelled as a saw blade, although it would be useless as a saw. This could be used to scrape some tinder from a dry twig, but a knife would be far better.

I suggest that you practice in the garden or outdoors before taking this into a situation where you might actually have to use it to light a fire.

You also get a small survival whistle in aluminium with plastic fipple block inside. There is a small hole on one side, which I think might serve to generate 2 tones when the whistle is blown. The pitch is so high though, I couldn’t say for sure. It is certainly very loud and piercing and deafening the person blowing the whistle is usually not the best idea — but it works. A lower pitched whistle might be more effective as lower pitched sounds travel further. It is certainly very compact though and with flattened sides and the key ring loop, will easily attach to a rucksack or a keyring and its aluminium construction make it light weight.

Easy if you know what you are doing

This is a good quality item in my opinion. It is much larger than i expoected so no finnickity fumbling trying to keep a good grip, when it sparks it does so really well and i am very impressed with this item.
The whistle is a handy extra so i would definitely recommend this item.

This rod produces impressive sparks. I really feel with enough dry kindling shavings I might have started a fire (see video). I didn’t and after quite an effort I decided to put it away for a dry day when I can find some more dry kindling. In the mean time I will revert to matches or a lighter which I now know is my preferred method of lighting a fire (I am grateful to the people who invented them).
The rod has a black coating which is immediately scraped away when shaving fillings and striking for sparks. It is left silver, uneven and exposed. Be cautious of spelks. It will wear down eventually but will last a long long time.
The attached by cord scraper/ruler is also worn slightly in use but is strong enough for its primary function. It also has a bottle opener which is essential for a survival kit. The saw is the tool used to make the sparks and I can’t imagine it actually functioning as a saw.
There are no instructions with this product but are instructions on the Amazon product page.
The whistle is lightweight, metal and functional. It is quite loud and would be useful in attracting attention in an emergency.
The products are both lightweight (see pictures).
This costs 9.99. It works so that’s worth considering and has the whistle as a bonus but I’d advise shopping around if all you want is the fire striker.

Impressive sparks and a loud whistle

I am really into things like this so was excited to get this fire striking kit. When it came I had no idea how to use it and it doesn’t come with instructions so I had a look online and then tried it out. I started by scrapping the black rod with the scraper and when I had a decent collection of magnesium I decided to try lighting it. Looking at the photos it looks like you get a rough surface on the whistle to cause a spark with however this isn’t the case you have to rub the scraper along the rod really fast. At first I couldn’t do it at all but with a bit of practice I can get some decent sparks. That said I haven’t been able to get a fire going with this yet. I think using it outside camping would be a nightmare in the wind unless you had some fuel treated kindling with you as any wind would just blow the magnesium away

    …EDIT…
In the interest of fairness to the product I have played with this more and figured out that you don’t need a rough edge or to rub the rod and ruler together fast fo make a spark. It is actually really easy to start a fire with this you simply hold the ruler against the top of the rod and strike downwards as if lighting a match. I have changed my star rating to reflect this

I think this is cool and is good fun but I think I will stick to a lighter when making fire

This is pretty cool, and great fun. The wood scraper makes really good fodder, and whilst the strike isn’t the easiest to actually get a fire from, it’s very a woodsman and organic way of trying. It also kills a lot of time camping and is quite a mindful thing to try and do!

This fire starter striker kit contains a magnesium rod and a striker ruler metal and an aluminium alloy emergency whistle.
The rod comes coated in thin black paint.
The items are professionally made and durable. To make sparks you need to strike a few times to wear away the black paint until you see the magnesium silver beneath it. Then when you strike again, you’ll get sparks shooting downwards towards your ignitor material to creat a fire. The magnesium rod will last many strikes.
The sparks are strong and consistent. I test tried striking sparks in the shower and it certainly does work!
You also get an aluminium zinc whistle included which is handy if you get into a tricky and need to alert people.
This fire starter is most handy as forgetting to take matches or lighters is very possible when camping.
I will be keeping it in my car to ensure that I don’t forget this useful fire striker starter on my camping trips and garden BBQ’s too!
It represents great value for money.

Creats powerful sparks in any conditio

Excellent fire starter, assuming you’ve got tissue paper or suitable dry tinder.

Easy to get a shower of sparks. The striker has a bottle opener which works really well, a serrated end which is good for stripping bark to make tinder, a small slightly pointless spanner and map rule.

They throw in a really good whistle which works when wet and is shrill and loud.

Good value and ideal for camping/survival situations.

    Good tool.

I chose to review for my son who regularly goes camping and climbing munros in Scotland (101 so far)

Some weekends he combines a camping trip with climbing and he found this very useful.
It took a little bit of getting used to but he said it works fine every time after that and it is especially useful if matches get wet or a lighter fails.

He said he will probably take this instead of anything else as it is so practical.
The item is well made with clear instructions

Oh and there is also a bottle opener and a whistle included!

This is for the adventurer in you. I can now throw away my two sticks and use this when I’m next alone in the wilderness! Joking aside it’s a handy little EDC tool to have in your kit and, although most users will probably never actually use it, it’s a decent emergency tool. The black coating on the ferrocerium rod will come off as soon as you start to use the striker and it should last a long time. As a secondary tool the scraper bit has a bottle opener on it. What more could you ask for?

EVOLAND Fire Starter Kit, 4.56″ Length Ferrocerium Flint Camping Emergency Firestarter

This fire starter works very well indeed, one thing to note is that the coating on the road will immediately come off once this is used for the first time, even though, it works a treat and one will have no problem just as long as you have good, dry tinder.

The attached tool has a measurement ruling on one side, can be used to open bottles plus has a so called ‘saw blade’, this is best used on the rod to achieve good sparks.

The enclosed whistle is made from metal and is very loud, this can be attached to a keyring.

Overall, a good set, decent quality and works as advertised, couldn’t ask for more.
