Wow we had so much fun doing this. It’s full of beautiful little gems and my daughter is in love with them all. The cars tell you what they are and tell you information about them! Would recommend!

This set of 12 gemstones includes the tray and the tools needed to extract the gemstones from the blocks of chalk. However, the tools are plastic and thin, so the idea is to gently and carefully extract the gemstones, rather than simply crushing them and getting the stone out in 2 minutes. It’s meant to be done over time like archaeologists dig in reality. Our 9 year old really liked it. Would recommend for children ages 7+.

    Teaches patience

There are 12 gen stones to be found in this fun and entertaining set. A range of tools are provided to break open the blocks in search for a new gem. There are a number of description cards explaining where each gem is located and plastic display units with stickers. My nephews really enjoyed this activity, we do one every time they visit and they get so excited to see which gem they will discover each time. Would make a good gift.

    Entertaining educational activity

A cute little starter kit to potentially set your child down the path of a new hobby.
Lots of opportunity for mums and dads to join in and work together with their kids.
Once the child has chipped away at the the colourful individual ‘rocks’ then they start a new collection of the semi precious gems or even incorporate them into a crafting project.
Definitely recommend it a work surface is chosen that’s properly protected and will be easy to clean.
Good educational fun, nicely packaged and well presented.

I received this Mega Gemstone Dig Kit for free as part of the Amazon Vine Programme.

This is so much fun and my nieces loved it! I love the variety of colours of blocks to choose from and the mystery of which gemstone you’re going to get! It kept them (and to be completely honest us adults too) busy for ages especially as there weren’t many tools to go round for all of us at the same time. I think it would’ve been great if there were a few sets of tools (2/3) considering this is kind of like a party pack but it was fun nonetheless. Everything was packaged beautifully and the information cards about the gems were so informative and added another layer of fun once the digging was completed! I will warn you though that it gets VERY messy so make sure surface areas are covered and you’re not wearing your favourite clothes!

12 blocks to chip away at with all the tools provided within the box. Hidden inside some Gems/precious stones.

12 Identity cards to identify your stone with origin and brief facts relating to your find.

    Hidden within the 12 blocks:
    Jade
    Topaz
    Tigers Eye
    Rose Quartz
    just to name a few….

Interesting facts, and some precious stones to keep.

These are fab! I love how you don’t see anything like it in the shops. My grandson was so excited to find “treasure” and they kept my young grandchildren entertained. The tools are easy to grip and each stone breaks apart after not top long. Excellent value!

This gem stone dig kit is well presented and would make a nice gift.

The large box contains digging tools, presentation stands and 12 blocks containing gems. The tools are mainly wood with a couple of smaller plastic tools so safe for young children. The stands are thin plastic but suitable for display purposes. The 12 blocks are colourful and look very much like bath bombs! That being said it’s more interesting than chipping away at dirt coloured blocks. There is a small magnifying glass included so that you can admire your gems once discovered.

My top tip is to do the activity on a tray or in a 6 inch sided box, the tray/box then catches all the chipped away mess and you can tip it in the bin when you’re finished.

A fun set that will inspire children’s imaginations, hard work and discovery reap rewards! And let’s not forget keep them busy! Happy to recommend.

    Fun, educational activity 💎

I did get my children a couple of real gemstone sets, though I have my reservations.

To begin with, some of the gemstones are usually treated wit radiation to bring out the colour. And although the levels are considered to be not that dangerous (well, at least for people who use microwave, over, a TV or a laptop, electric heater), it is still there and it is very close to your child’s body. So I always advocate precaution and advise these gemstones are not played with but studied occasionally and displayed (good luck with little children and teaching them the word ‘No!’).

These are not large gemstones but they are quite a good size and demonstrate the differences between different rocks and minerals found in mother Earth. This is definitely an educational kit and will bring lots of joy to the ones who love excavation. These are to be extracted outdoors (preferably), or with a cloth mask over a child’s mouth and nose and somewhere where a grown-up (child won’t be able to do it on their own) could clean all the dust easily afterwards. Do not use a hoover as you will ruin the filter (learned the hard way).

Really nice idea, but the tools are too light for use on the blocks of chalk. My eight-year old resorted to crushing the blocks underfoot to extract the stone. It is a lovely set to get kids interested in geology.

My daughter loves the gemstone dig kit!
It was slow going at first but once she found the first gem she zoomed through the 12 brick.
It doesn’t come with a small wooden hammer, like other kits.
The help of the hammer was huge.
She found one of everything else and 2 geodes.
Over all this was a great purchase and will be getting the fossil kit in the near future.
    Would recommend.

This will keep a child, teen and/or adult occupied for a good while because it can take some patience trying to locate the gemstone in the rock.
The brush is actually more useful than the pick and hammer and I’d also recommend using water if the task starts to become too long.
The gems are beautifully polished, though smaller in size than I thought. I also really like the fact cards that come with each gemstone that tell you about the stone, it’s origin and uses.
Though it might seem up there in price, it will keep your child occupied for a good while and the feel really rewarded when the uncover the stone – so it seems worth it in the end.

    Great activity, beautiful gems

I have to be honest, I think I was more excited than the children in the end.

So this is a more expensive gem dig kit but it’s definitely worth it in my opinion. I like the fact the each gem is hidden in a chunk of chalky substance so that multiple children can excavate without other little fingers getting caught in the way.

The colours of the blocks seem to represent what might be inside, there’s little cards that tell you what’ll be hiding in these blocks.

The tools however, you receive only one set which the kids may fight over, I had to find some other tools that could be used for my other child.
However they were good quality wooden tools unlike other kits with plastic which have previously broken on me.

But you actually do get real gemstones here! Some are mesmerising like the tigers eye.
I did find it hard to match the gemstones to their pictures though, some don’t like their photos at all so I’m still a bit confused with some of them but nonetheless the kids loved it and I certainly did too.

I would definitely go for this if it’s for an older child with an interest in gemstones. Fabulous quality!

    Real gemstones, brilliant fu

This was so much fun for my kids to do. But the stones inside the actual blocks were tiny so some were harder to find than others. Love how you can display them all after and learn which each stone is. Can get messy but it’s only chalk to safe on carpets mine hoovered out fine. Easy to do if a little wet but not needed plenty of fun.

This gemstone excavation kit is a brilliant fun and educational activity. Our daughter loves collecting a variety of gemstones and this kit offered a bit more fun, having to dig them out manually.
You get 12 blocks of compressed sand with a gemstone hidden in each. The kit comes with tools to dig them out and brush them off and includes a small magnifier to inspect them close up.
The gems can be shared out or collected and displayed in plastic cups.
It would make a great gift or fun activity to share with a friend.

This is a set of 12 blocks with 12 gems .
    They are quite good quality
There is a lot of play in these. My 11 year old boy has an interest in gems and geology and he loved this set. It took him a while to go through all the chalks.
My TIP: be carful when digging around the stones as you may scratch them in process.
I also wish the product came in fully recyclable box rather than in plastic tray.
Also my hammer’s head isn’t set properly and falls off (we glued it).
My son has awarded this set 5 out of 5*
And for that reason I would buy again and I would recommend
I hope my review and photos were helpful

    So much to play with

I showed this set to my daughter, wanted to get her attention on something different than Roblox or popping toys.. This was perfect to keep her busy with, at least for an hour or so. I helped with crushing the chalky blocks and she was dusting the gems as soon as they became visible inside the chalk. She used the little hammer and wooden stick to get into them more.. All in all, we did them all. I washed the gems and they are small but very pretty. I love them. My daughter played with them for a bit, she loves the rose quartz. My favourite is tiger eye but to be fair, all of them look special and unique. They are well polished and the shape is nearly like cube. Along with the set we got the cards presenting the names and basic information about each of the gemstone. Its very educational and interesting. Sometimes I think how amazingly this world is created.. it hides lots of beauty underneath the soil..
This set of hidden gems would make great gift for those who are into geology and archeology, who like to discover the past and learn from it..
I just love these gemstones, they are amazing. Leftover bigger pieces of chalk we can reuse for drawing on the path..
One thing-the little wooden hammer is to lightweight to break the chalky block..I used the wooden stick to drill into it with men’s force so kids would spend the whole day to break one..But after all it’s a fun to do it, not speedy challenge 😉
    Highly recommended.

I’ve seen ‘excavation kits’ like this with plastic dinosaurs skeletons but not with gemstones. And which isn’t fascinated by shiny gemstones? And after the (somewhat messy) activity of clearing the ‘sandstone’ from and the treasure in the middle, having a range of gemstones to display, rather than plastic dinosaur bones, is probably more something that a kid will value for longer.
In the kit you get 12 ‘stone’ blocks, two of six different colours, the colour of the block (presumably) indicating the gemstone inside. That means if it’s a shared activity between two kids you can be sure they have an equal distribution of gene between them.
You get the various tools to ‘excavate’ the gems; stylus, makes, brush etc. There’s even a little magnifying glass and an information pack about the different gemstones. I think the clear plastic pyramids might be intended for the kids to use to display the favourite gems on.
The blocks are, basically, compressed sand so it’s worth thinking about the mess it’ll makes breaking these apart and doing the activity outside or at least on a big playmat or tables cloth to aid cleaning up after.
But kids will have fun ‘mining’ for the gems and will hands a like collection of shiny gemstones to keep afterwards. So lots of fun all round (except maybe the cleaning up!)

Update. Just taken this to a family party for my 7 year old niece. She loved it and spent a happy 45 minutes excavating the gems. She now thinks she may want to be an archaeologist when she’d grows up!

Something to keep the kids entertained for a while

This set is good family fun.

great fun for primary aged children.
    tools included.
display plinths and information cards included.
I tested with children aged 6&8 and although it took quite a long time to find each crystal we all enjoyed this activity.
this would make a great gift.

    Cons:
    maybe a tad pricey.
some children might get frustrated by how long it takes to chip away the chalk. If this happens you can soak the chalk in water for a quicker discovery.

Happy to recommend – 5 stars from me.

    Great fun discovering the gems

This is a fun set for any little one who has an interest in rocks and crystals.

All you need to do is add a little water and they can get going slowly chipping away at the blocks to find the treasure inside.

The crystals aren’t the biggest (about 1cm wide) but it’s still fun and exciting when they find them and get to figure out which Crystal it is!

It’s a great way for them spend an afternoon indoors but still feel like they’ve been on an adventure.

Overall I’m really happy with this set and would definitely recommend it.

    A fun and informative set.
