Right, first up it was delivered very quick and the packaging was very sturdy. I was already very pleased before i even opened it but you have to expect a catch. There didn’t seem to be one as on inspection, all the components were there and they all seemed to be good quality. Assembly was easy, no fiddly bits and everything went where it was supposed to and just clicked or thumbscrewed into place. A9v battery was included so i popped it in and went through the basic checks listed in the set up guide. The tone recognition is easy enough. Low and its probably tat and high suggests more lucrative metal. It definitely made plenty of noise when metal was placed near the coil. Everything was shaping up nicely so all i had to do was get it out in the wild. I spent about five hours in the field I had my permission to explore. what a blast, I had it on all metal to start with and I just got sick of digging up lumps or old machine parts but to start with I was excited with every beep. i set it jewellery for the last hour and came away with some soft metal which was registering as silver ad an old half penny coin. I cant wait to go out again and this little detector made it a great first outing. Not one single complaint. One other thing i would add is that the battery included only lost one notch on the built in power indictor and a rarely turned it off so the device will last a good while on one battery. Also, the pin pointer function was useful. You will definitely need a dedicated pin pointer to avoid a load of digging but it scream when you are nearer the prize so it definitely helps you narrow it down. Really happy with this purchase and i’m also happy to recommend it to other people seeking a starter device to get them up and running on their detectorists journey.

This is my first metal detector so after a lot of research via U tube, Facebook and metal detectorist sites I bought the DR.TEK MT-XR which has had a lot of positive feedbacks. As it is my first one I did not want to get an expensive one which I think maybe overpriced, it was very easy to assemble and came with a battery so had it working almost straight away,My first impression is how light it is. Very nice bright screen and plenty of settings, it has a excellent memory function which will be very useful, The pin point mode is great and along with the MT-6 pin-pointer I should have no trouble in finding some great items in the future. This is great value for money for starters like me or more advanced detectorist.
Found a few things so far like screws, nails, ring pulls & toy cars but more importantly some old coins which was my main reason for buying it… Looking forward to finding a Kew gardens 50p
    Like everything about it!

Very lightweight, easy to use & plenty of functions

I wanted to treat myself to a metal detector for my birthday & after researching several makes/models I decided that this was the best in my price range.
I was initially worried that holding it for any length of time would strain my arms or back, but it’s light weight meant this wasn’t a problem at all.
Assembling it was very straight forward and easy (although the manual’s diagram does reference 2 rubber gaskets which fit either side of the stem where the bolt passes through to hold the coil in place. However, after watching several assembly videos on YouTube, it appears that these gaskets are no longer required – please update the manual!).
Once assembled, I immediately went into my garden to try it out & within minutes got a strong signal. I passed over it several times to make sure, then used the PinPoint facility to find exactly where I need to dig & proceeded to dig for my treasure. Unfortunately, I didn’t find a hoard of valuable coins, but was oddly still delighted at finding a mangled piece of paint tin lid! This showed how easy the MT-XR is to use. I’m now obsessed with my quest to find buried treasure & I can’t wait to take my search further afield. I’ll let you know if/when I find something of interest!

This is my first metal detector. I have been reading a lot on metal detectors and reviews. The DR.OTEX MT-XR looked like it was a great buy with a lot of features.
It was easy to assemble and had it up and running in no time at all. A quick read of the user manual was all I needed.
Went to the beach to try it out, never found any coins this time but I did find a few items…..not valuable.
I set it to disc so that I was not wasting time on nails etc. I set off searching for the hidden treasures on the beach and almost instantly the beep went off, I pressed the pin point which is very useful to get the exact location to dig and it also gives you the depth too. My first find was a broken credit card as I think it picked up the memory chip. Second find was a bottle metal lid followed by a few bits of cans.
So I was well pleased how well the metal detector ferformed at finding objects although no valuables.
In a few words I’m well pleased and very impressed with the light weight and how easy it is to operate.
    Highly recommend the MT-XR

I finally purchased my my very first metal detector after toying with the idea for a number of years but never actually putting the idea into action! And well all I can say is Waw!.. I’m so glad I did!
I choose the Dr otek MTXR model after quite a considerable amount of window shopping comparing different makes and models for their features, functionability and not to mention cost, and found that this model stood out on many occasions as an equal contender against some of the considerably higher priced models and so I finally treated myself!
When my detector arrived I could not believe how quick and easy it was to assemble, (and even came with a battery) so was able to try it immediately. After placing a few tester metals around the garden I could not believe how accurate the device was with regards to the location and depth accuracy, and found the control panel extremely easy to use and understand (I think a few YouTube videos helped with that!) it is also more lightweight and comfortable to hold than I was expecting, being 6″3 I was expecting to have to hold it with a bit of a stoop but was pleasantly surprised!
Although I have yet to find my treasure, I cannot wait to begin my adventures and on first impressions I am quite confident that I have made an excellent choice of metal detector to finally get me out exploring!

Have just received my metal detector, first though was what a small light box have I bought a toy, my question was soon answered its no toy. easy to understand instructions had my metal detector functioning within 20 mins. Its been nearly 40 years since I last had a metal detector how things have changed, I went through the different functions and listened to the tones made for different metals etc. I had to get out so off I went trowel in hand off the the river banks close to home. Spent a couple of hours out there to start with picked up a few pieces of junk bottle tops and things then my first coin and old 5 shilling 1968 not worth anything but the fun of finding it was a buzz picked up a couple of old pennies before heading home. really enjoyable first time out will use the disc function next time feel more confident now looking forward to hours of fun and you never know what I might find. A great piece of kit and not to expensive

I have been looking to get into Metal detecting for a while and was looking at more expensive machines. Then I came across this detector, read the many many positive reviews on both here and other sites and decided to give it a try. At just over 100 I admit i was still sceptical. Well, i was wrong to be sceptical. I have been out a few times since Christmas and what an amazing machine this is. Firstly, it takes 2 minutes to put together and set it to your required length. I had a very quick look at the instruction book but to be honest there is no real need. Its so easy to use and understand, the settings are simple, and within no time i was wandering around a field. The machine is super lightweight so you will have no issues going on long digs. Although i havent found anything of real significance (a button, parts from a plough, half a million nails and screws) this little detector will find whatever is underneath it. I was finding small items upto 10 inches down, or varying types of metal no problem at all. The pin pointer is extremely accurate. Dont get me wrong, there are more expensive and better machines out there and in time i will probably upgrade to one of them, but for the money and quality this is a no brainer. After watching many review videos I can now 100% agree with what they say about the DrOtek. This machine matches and even surpasses rival machines at over double the price!!! A very Very capable machine.

I’ve been looking to buy a metal detector for quite some time and having trawled through many reviews decided to buy the Dr. Otek MT-XR. It was a great choice. I wanted something capable of providing good signals, lightweight and not too expensive in case I didn’t stick with it. It takes a 9 volt battery which lasts a good day’s detecting. I’ve purchased 4 USB rechargeable’s to keep ongoing costs down and they work very well. The machine was very easy to assemble and the instruction booklet was clear and straightforward. I tested the machine in the garden on various metals which were detected up to 10 inches deep and correspond to the numbers given for that metal type. I’ve been out with my wife on perhaps 6 occasions, mainly on the beach, and have had great success so far. We’ve found about 8 in modern day coins, a dog whistle, shot gun cartridge from 1942, an old penny from 1912, a half farthing (in poor condition) from circa 1840 and something that looks to be an old button. I couldn’t say how this compares to a more expensive detector but I’m more than satisfied with this one. The display and functions are easy to use. My wife is so into this detecting lark she wants her own so I will be buying another one.

This was my Christmas gift this year, my husband bought it for me after I watched the entire Oak Island series and was desperate to go out looking for pirate treasure on the shoreline. With not a scratch of experience I’m a total beginner and this was super easy to put together, the instructions were straight forward even though I simply just turned it on and went digging up the garden first. (Well my husband was in charge of the spade whilst I ran around shrieking I’d found buried silver). I seemed to have worked backwards and learnt from my mistakes, but this detector is simply that easy to use. It is lightweight and the display is simple to read with adjustable volume so as not to wake up the neighbours whilst searching for silver and gold on the front lawn. For a first detector this is perfect, affordable and robust I would highly recommend it. Purchased with a pinpointer and foldaway spade I can now go searching for that illusive pirate treasure .

    The best fun...

Bought this for my 10 year old son and myself to go treasure hunting.
It was easy to assemble but some parts that looked metal are plastic and felt slightly cheap, but only felt cheap, we’ve had no problems with their strength or durability.
The battery coming with it was brillaint, a 9v (square) PP3 battery.
It’s volume is great and detects metal and metal rubbish very well. It’s PP (PinPoint) is really useful and helps to find where the item when digging the hole, but a handheld pinpointer makes the job easier.
The conenctor to join the coil and the display has fallen out once or twice in transit, but never in searching.
I don’t find it heavy, but my 10 year old can only manage about 30 mins or so, so we take it in turns.

It’s great value, works well, simple to understand the larger the number displayed the bigger the find, found some coins (earliest 1983) and rifle bullets (intact and some collapsed) so far as our biggest finds over 2 searches.

As much fun and as acurrate as I hoped

I’ve been wanting a metal detector for some time I looked through the ones that are for sale on Amazon after weighing up the pros and coins I opted for the DR.OTEK METAL DETECTOR MT-XR
The delivery was quick and the price was right ( come on down )
Packaged well and there was no broken parts
It took me about 10mins to put together as it was easy and straight forward
I purchased this detector on a lightning deal so it was even more great value than the original price
It is very light and has many features including for beginners
It runs on 1 9v battery that was included
If your buying as a present this is a good add on
Looks like a space age instrument
    Can’t wait to use

Purchased for my 8 year old son as a Christmas Gift.

2nd time lucky, first time most parts were missing. Build quality is very good and easy to assemble. Would have been perfect if it could have folded down for transit instead of taking it half apart.

A little bit of tuition and I am sure my son will quickly grasp how to use it. on the whole its something he can grow into. Start off with simple functions and add more as he learns how to use it.

Value for money, I guess its good, nothing to compare it by. My own detector is a ground penetrating radar so slightly different and somewhat more complex. But this Dr. TEK will be perfect for him.

I am sure it will add to his hobby list and maybe one day pay for itself. God help the neighborhood though as I can see him digging it up. Will be perfect for him beach combing during summer though.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIt was decades ago since I last used a metal detector and assumed that they would now be easier to use. I was not disappointed and found this really simple to put together and get started. Okay I’m still not rich waiting to find that pot of gold but feel I have a chance. Its lightweight and well balanced so does not tire the operator. The garden is now metal free having found amongst other things, a silver plated christening spoon and a .303 spent shell case (since found out that there was a gun emplacement/ anti aircraft gun once sited very close to where I now live). Highly recommend for old codgers like me.

Our 8 year old son has been wanting a metal detector for awhile now. With all the restrictions in place due to Covid and so many wonderful places within our area to go, we decided a metal detector would be a good bit of kit to take along on our adventures which for the last year have been with our Kelly Kettle (another good bit of kit for the times we’re living in). At the very least, we’ll enjoy the exercise and filling our piggy banks and the most maybe a bit of ole treasure! Our detector arrived this morning after being delayed nearly three days; not sure if the delay was due to an Post or Customs, neither here nor there, as the weather has had us tucked up anyway. After about 10 minutes putting the detector together and testing it based on the basic set up instructions – we’re pleased with our purchase and really excited to get out and use it. I rated the lightweight feature as a 4 star because I can see where the bit of weight combined with the length of the detector might be tiring for our 9 and 8 year olds. Still, it would be easy enough for them to do a two-handed sweep… that said, they love to dig, so I see this activity going like this: Dad operates the metal detector, Mom operates the pin pointer (also purchased), the two kids dig and collect any treasure. Great fun for the whole family! I’ll provide another review with images of what we find – as we all found that brilliant when we were shopping for this detector.

I was amazed at the size of the box that it arrived in and was expecting it to be flimsy and cheap looking as the box was so small…… However I couldn’t have been further from the truth. It’s so well packed and easy to assemble.

Once I had it ready to go I went to my sister’s garden to look for a wedding ring I’d thrown into the grass when I previously lived at the property with my wife….. Don’t ask, she was irritating me at the time. My sister was blown away by the detecting, so much so that she wants to buy one for herself and her boys. The machine worked very well and it was very addictive. The down side of the detector is it is unable to fill in the multiple dig holes in the garden.
Overall very accurate, the pin pointer mode is great, very light weight so is easy to manoeuvre and great value for money.

First of all I’m totally new to metal detecting, I’ve been wanting to get one since I watched the TV show The Detectorists.

I looked at other reviews on amazon and other sites and they all say this is the one to get for the price.

it was packaged really well and the box is small so won’t take up too much space if you are the type that like to keep the boxes.

Takes about 5 minutes to put together and its really light and easy to handle.

You can adjust the length of the detector so it is suitable to your height.

Now silly old me has bought it during the covid-19 lockdowns so I can’t go off looking in the countryside or woods BUT I had a little play with it in the garden and asked my wife to go Bury 3 1 coins in the garden….I found 2 (i think she took the 3rd for a bar of chocolate).

I can honestly say up to now, I’m happy with it and I can’t wait to get out there and try and find some wonderful things.

Quick sum up at the end 🙂

So, I bought a basic one at half this price just to get a view of metal detecting, I live nearby several beaches so always thought it would be fun. True enough, I was hooked and so were the kids, ages 6, 9 and 11.
Went a few times but we were always fighting over who would detect so I had to buy another one, deciding to give the first one to the kids I started my research.
Yeah I could have bought one for hundreds more but I’m not planning on becoming a pro, I wanted a nice basic lightweight detector.
When I came across this one, it already had brilliant reviews but I was still sceptical because, come on seriously, this price for something rated so well.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered, couple days later it arrived and I couldnt wait to get back out, quickly setup which again is super easy.
Single 9v battery included that’s also a bonus.

So down the beach we went, detector on and we’re off, after a few minutes I’m beeping, still learning what’s what because yeah, I never read the instructions, but in all fairness, it’s pretty simple to work out.
Managed to find lots of junk so I changed the settings and the beeping stopped, wandering along for around 10-15 minutes and not a single thing, beginning to think it’s not that good and then BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!.
tells me it’s about 4 inches down so I dig, low and behold, a 2 coin.
Happy days, my first coin and its 2 quid, little smile on my face after that.
So all in all, totally happy with it. (Plus wifes been out and she’s hooked too so I think this will be added to her Christmas presents lol)

    Quick sum up:

Only takes 1 battery but still lasts a long time which is good as my cheaper one took 2 and was dead at the end of each day.

Height adjustable, I’m 5’9 and I only have it on the 2nd hole, theres another 4-5 more which i guess someone over 6ft would have no issues.

Very clear and easy to use, tells me by number what sort of metal I’m looking at and at what depth in inches which seems pretty accurate.

Lightweight and has a strap for your arm so you dont feel it after several hours.

Completely adjustable for sensitivity, all metals or you can adjust down in stages to get rid of the junk.

Has the built in pinpointer so that’s handy, if I couldnt find what was beeping after I dug a hole and piled the sand, I lay down the detector with the end hanging over the hole and just picked up a handful at a time, waved it over the detector and if it went crazy from the pinpoint, I knew it was in my hand, if not I dropped it back into the hole.

Oh, plus here’s the biggie, theres a 2 year warranty with this one when you register it online, alot of other ones dont offer that especially at this price because they’re cheap chinese junk.

Will buy another one the same for my wife lol

When my Garrett Ace250 went to detector heaven I thought that I would replace it with another one but a bit of research on the net pointed me in the direction of the Dr Otek MT-XR. The very positive reviews on Amazon and on YouTube caught my interest and when it came up as an Amazon Lightning Deal it was a very easy decision to press the ‘buy it now’ button.

It is brilliant. Light, very easy to assemble and very well made. The build quailty is excellent. The PP function is spot on and the back-lit control panel with its easy to understand icons, is a model of clarity and function. The sensitivity is superb and the ergonomics of the handle and shaft are a quantum leap over the now departed Garrett.

For a beginner or even a seasoned user, this cracking little detector offers enormous value and punches way above its weight and price point. I thoroughly recommend it and, if you are in the market for a budget metal detector that perform like machines costing 2 or 3 times as much, then the MT-XR should be at the top of your list.

Upon opening the box I thought that it would have had a little more cushioning packaging however it didn’t affect the parts. It was very easy to assemble and I was amazed at the range of heights that this can be adjusted to.

Once assembled I read some of the manual and took he detector into the garden and began trying it out. Straight away it hit upon something in the grass and was a good signal. Upon investigation I discovered a small panel pin nail. Yes it was very small but gave a good signal.

I am very impressed with my purchase and after a long protracted search for the ‘perfect not break the bank’ detector I think I made the perfect choice. My grandkids will find it easy to use and lightweight enough and also gives me an excuse to get involved.

I will be going out next weekend and if I find anything I will re-post my findings.

    Excellent value for money

I’ve done some metal detecting, but I’m relatively new to the hobby. Done a fair bit of research and this seems the best bet. I was looking at Garrett alternatives, but some hardcore detectorists on youtube have given this pretty decent reviews, price is great and yellow isn’t my colour! Done some tests around the garden so far. Discrimination mode seems to work very well eliminating iron so you can swerve the rusty nails etc. Taking it to the beach at the weekend and a few other places to put it through its paces but I’m impressed so far. Pinpoint mode very good as well. Not sure you can go wrong for the price. The screen isn’t waterproof so will have to bag it in the rain, coil is however waterproof so beach work is no worries. Backlight is bright and you can switch it on for 10 minutes at a time. The length is adjustable and self aligns. Was easy to assemble. Jobs a gooden. Hope this helps!

I have seen pictures of other peoples finds using this detector that they have posted on their Amazon reviews, and they look quite unbelievable……a little too unbelievable if I’m being honest 🙂 It’s like they have an ulterior motive to want their reviews to be at the top for 3 months in a row 🙂 These items are more likely what you are going to find for the first few times you go out, because you have to dig everything to get used to your machine. I was out with my son yesterday and we were at the beach for around 5 hours and this is what we found. I am putting these pictures up not to put you off getting this machine, but rather to show that it really does work extremely well. Most of these items were very deep, further than 10 inches in fact. The black rock that looks like a charcoal briquette set the detector off, I thought/hoped it was a meteorite. I now believe after a peruse on the net that it’s actually a hot rock. The find of the day was a complete surprise to me. I thought it was a lump of squished metal, but after cleaning it up it looks to be a wee lion head button or brooch. It’s not ancient…i don’t think, but it’s definitely old. When i dug up the “gold coin” for a second i thought i was rich lol, turns out it was a chocolate coin wrapper 🙂 I couldn’t be happier with my detector. Get yourself one at your earliest convenience, you will be happy that you did 🙂

I already wrote a quick review for my MT-XR detector. For some reason it doesn’t appear to have uploaded.
I am very impressed with this detector. Was very easy to assemble. Had a wee practice out the backdoor and it worked extremely well. Managed to get out yesterday to Ayr beach and was there for a good 5 hours, though it didn’t feel like it. This thing is a blast, I’m so happy i bought it. For the price you pay you are getting a very good bit of kit. Unfortunately I didn’t get the detector when it was priced at 100. Though if you visit the Dr.tek website you get 10% off. If you sign up to the mailing list you get a 15% off voucher, though i didn’t do this until after i had already ordered lol. The point being, I am very very happy with my new detector and would have been happy paying the full price or even more for it, now that I have it and see that it’s even better than I thought it would be. Seriously if you are interested in taking metal detecting up as a hobby, but don’t want to pay the brand name prices to start with, then I highly recommend the MT-XR. You are getting a lot of bang for your buck. I am going back out on Wednesday and will take some videos of the detector in action and some pictures of anything i find……hopefully it will be more than all the ring pulls, tent pegs and the 3 whole pence I found on Sunday 🙂

As with most items, you get what you pay for. A good example being a cordless drill, a cheap one will chew screws or stall drilling holes, an expensive one will do everything you ask of it! so when it came to getting a metal detector to try out for a new hobby, I was cautious in that I didn’t want to spend a whole lot of money and not get enjoyment, but then I knew that buying a cheap one would be pointless. ( actually got my son a 40 one for Christmas a couple years back and it didn’t even detect metal that was placed directly underneath!)

So lesson learned. After scouring amazons metal detectors this one came out as a highly rated detector, so as always I searched for independent reviews from other sites and video reviews on youtube. it appeared to be in quite a few top 5 or top 10 lists on review sites, so this was good enough for me and at 150 I was happy to make the purchase.

On my first test I went out with a friend who is part of a club and has a Garrett something or other metal detector, cost him I think 550. He was most surprised with how this metal detector compared to his own as they both found the same items when tested as we found them. Bearing in mind this test was done on a beach, so I don’t know as to how that effects the efficiency of a detector. But as you can see in my picture we found all sorts of treasure, well junk, but it was exciting and we removed garbage from the beach so that’s all good for the community 🙂

The deepest find was, I would estimate, about 9 inches deep and this detector had no trouble with finding it. I would recommend this detector based on this test. I also buried a few items in the garden for the kids to have a play with, all items were found apart from one, but I had buried it about 20 inches deep. (worth a try) It did pick up though a penny at 10 inches deep, bearing in mind though the soil was loosened, so again, not sure if that has any effect on how well it works.

Hoping my boss allows me to have a go in one of his empty fields for some real treasure.

    Surprisingly Good!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWe purchased this in desperation as my wife lost her beloved silver troll bead necklace “somewhere in the garden” this week. Secretly I have always wanted to buy a metal detector, and this was the perfect excuse! I needed to get something that actually worked, not too expensive but decent and with enough power and accuracy to try and pinpoint the lost item amongst soil, flower beds, gravel pathways and grass spread over a large front garden. We had tried for many hours to locate the necklace and we had even emptied all the waste bins and searched the house just in case! There are a lot of entry products out there but this DR.OTEK model came up positively in a quick scan across the web. I particularly liked the feature that discriminates between different metals as my garden is full of old nails which would give us too many false readings. The product was delivered promptly and after carefully assembling it we tested different metals to see how it performed (you do that on wooden table, away from any electrical appliance that might cause interference). This is fully explained in the provided instruction booklet and the button controls are quite intuitive. The detector makes a different sound depending on the material, proximity, etc and we used a similar necklace to get a quick calibration. We even tried a gold ring to see how it responded. After this quick set up we went outside like excited children to see what we could find… We spent about 20 minutes concentrating on the flower beds to no avail other than rusty nails which the machine indicated correctly so we then moved on to the gravel pathways where low and behold we got a very strong and clear signal like the one tested earlier – RESULT! The neckless was hidden several inches below the surface, bedded in the fine gravel. Our new detector has now more than paid for itself, my wife is so happy, and I have a new toy to play with!

The idea behind buying a metal detector was to get my 11 yr old twins off their electronics and outdoors every once in a while. I saw an article on the bbc news website about a young lad finding a sword with a metal detector and asked my kids to read it. That got the excitement going and I started researching what detector to buy.

I had never been metal detecting before and I didn’t want to spend a fortune but also did not want to buy something that did not work properly or was poorly made, so I spent some time researching online.
I chose this unit because of the good reviews and the price range. I found it to be light enough for the kids to handle and it was very easy to assemble. Within 10 minutes, we had put it together and started detecting in our back garden!

After only literally 5 minutes, the detector went off and we dug up (also using the pinpointer tool to help and digger tool to unearth) a Victorian brass weight. The kids were elated and really encouraged to continue our hunt. We found many more small items but really need to find some more land to hunt on now!
I can only recommend this product as it does exactly what it says, all the more so, it’s exciting and a pleasure to use (For the kids and me!).

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe lightness of this detector, the Dr Otek MT-XR is amazing, a woman or even a child or disabled person could operate this all day and have no shoulder or arm ache, it took me about five minutes to put it together, when i saw how light the metal was i was concerned that maybe it was not very robust but when the tubes are slid into place it becomes quite strong in construction, forming a “double” tube, with the spring loaded buttons it is simple to adjust to your own personal spec, no matter how tall or short and the twist grips hold the whole thing sturdily together, it adjusts to fit into the boot of the car in seconds, i tried out the Garret 400i which was good but i found the mode adjustments too complicated and the handle grip gets wearying after a while, whereas the Dr Otek technical adjustments were so easy to understand and remember, the handle fits into the palm in a much more natural way and the foam padded arm rest with velcro securing strap makes it into a most natural extension of your arm. The Pin Pointer button is amazing and really centers the object detected, i have read that you have to go by the outer ring but i found if you go over the object in a cross shape it get it bang in the center of the search head, the depth gauge is very accurate also and saves unnecessary digging. At the beach it is easy to tune out unwanted items such as ring pulls, personally though i leave everything in just to relieve the monotony of large areas with no hits and the back lit screen is great in low light conditions.
My first time out with it on a friends farm produced two metal buttons, two horse shoes and a George the third cartwheel penny, the really spooky thing though was on the first button, i dug out a circular clod of earth and as i pulled it out of the ground there, at the bottom of the hole staring back at me was of all things not found with a metal detector, a flint arrowhead ! i could not believe it, if i had dug a half inch to much or less i would not have seen it, the signal from the button gave the signal that unearthed where it had laid for thousands of years, it is awaiting examination by the “finds” department of the National Museum of Wales, where hopefully they will be able to accurately date it, every time i look at it, i wonder about the person who made it, to him i suppose it was the height of technology, it may have meant his next meal, or helped keep him and his family safe, of course it may also have been made by his child or woman, whilst he was out looking for their next meal, so my metal detector can also be a time machine that helps me look into the past, hopefully one day i will achieve what we would all love and find a hoard or a gold coin but until then the little things keep my interest up and i have complete confidence in my friend, Dr Otek, if it is down there, we WILL find it, I am lucky enough to live by the coast and have found that with the waterproof search coil i can amble along in around three or four inches of water with complete confidence but i need to get myself a sand shovel, it is like a sieve so the sand and water run through and leave the find in the shovel.
The only not so good thing that i could find was that it does not come with a rain cover for the digital control head but cling film does an adequate job but all in all, I love it, it performs better than my neighbours much more expensive one, the look on his face when he saw what i had found on my first foray with it was priceless.
Rest assured you will not be disappointed with this, I am so glad that i chose it.

The metal detector arrived two days faster than the due date, which was an added bonus. It is very light and suitable for both adults and kids with an adjustable arm length This is very important when you use it for longer periods of time so your arm doesn’t get painful. Reading all the reviews, I chose the Dr. tek Metal Dector for this reason. It was so easy to set up and included a battery. It’s very accurate as we tested it prior to using it outdoors with all the different types of metals. Our first test was on the beach and although we haven’t found anything yet after two uses we had the best fun. The pin-point function is also very useful but I think I would purchase a separate pin point detector for accuracy. Additionally, I would recommenced probably buying two Metal Detectors if going out searching with a family. There is no fighting and waiting so long for your turn. Once you have it you don’t want to give up looking. It helps to bring both a big and small shovel. We took a garden sieve but the sand was too wet on the day but would probably be better on dry sand to use this. We used the metal detector without attaching headphones and could hear the beeping very well. It worked well over water too. However, if going alone headphones would be better. Good luck everyone that purchases this Metal detector. You will have lots of fu

I’ve owned this metal detector for 3 months and thought I’d leave a while to review to get good use & give a good review to help others.

It was very easy to assemble and instructions are very good on how to use. Comes with handy booklet.
It’s lightweight and easy to transport and carry.
I looked at many products before choosing this one as I wanted it for my son to use also and it’s very easy for him to use. It has clear readings of different metals and these can also be pinpointed which is great.
My son found some old tractor weights himself and they were buried more then 10 inches down.
You get a 2 year warranty which is fantastic. We’ve had no issues all Works perfectly and we’ve had some good finds including lots of coins and even found my gold ring I’d lost in garden so yes you can find gold.
It’s also good at the beach in shallow water it’s worked fine.
Battery life is very long we haven’t had to change them yet but think it’s easy to do when needed. I’ve read you can get rechargeable batteries for these too so good to know.
Very comfortable to use and lightweight so great item.
Glad I shopped around and did my research because for the price and quality this is fantastic.

    Top quality - highly recommend

Really impressed with this, easy to assemble out of the box, and comes apart easily too in case you need to travel with it. Very easy to read screen with lots of great features – there’s a ‘Jewelry’ mode which ignores iron so you can concentrate on coins and valuables, rather than nails etc., and also the screen tells you what the likely item is that you’ve found so you can further choose whether to dig for it, as well as telling you how deep the item is.

Then there’s the ‘PinPoint’ mode, just press a button very usefully placed at the bottom of the screen, once you’ve found an item, and it will zone in exactly where the item is, giving you a precise location. At the same time, the tone changes higher and lower as you sweep in this mode and a level indicator on the screen help you find exactly where you should be looking.

I really like how light this model is, not heavy like my last metal detector, which gave me an aching arm after a while. This one isn’t going to cause any problems there!. Great adjustable armrest and main shaft too.

There’s a backlight function, but the screen is so easy to read, even with all the useful information there, you’d only really need to use that in the dark.

The coil is waterproof, great for beach / rock pool / river hunting, and a standard headphone jack so you can plug in any normal headphones. I like the adjusting tones on this, and the volume control too.

Another really useful feature is that if you switch it off to save battery for a short while, it remembers the last setting so you can carry on as you were.

All in all, I’m really pleased with this purchase – I did a bit of research before choosing a detector, and found that this gave great features at an affordable price.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAfter looking at so many metal detectors and doing my research, I was drawn to this particular model and it hasn’t disappointed. The features are easy to use. Clear instructions with a quick start leaflet and surprisingly came with a 9V battery.
I’m disabled with the use of one arm only and have found it incredibly light and easy to handle. Very comfortable on the wrist and arm.
I’ve done a few tests with various metals and the pinpoint feature is fantastic. Easy to adjust so that my young grandson can assist me with my new hobby! Would be great if there was a cover for the display to make it waterproof. I understand the manufacturer might be designing one for the near future but in the meantime I will cover it with cling film for protection.
    Would highly recommend. Very impressed!

    (Update)
This manufacture has a great customer service team, it has a personal Touch and makes you feel valued which is rare now days, Response to queries Dealt with quick
    UPDATE 2
7 aug received my free Dr.otek Digger with case super happy very well made. Seen some reviews where it had snapped but feel it’s just bad luck nothing 100% every time. And I’m sure they would replace it.

Absolute brilliant machine .worth much more than the price. The pinpoint function is my favourite. Spot on every time. Previously bought a beginners model which was around 100 pounds ..sent it straight back was so flimsy
.then found this Dr otek on Amazon .feels so much more professional and fairly rugged .. on 1st visit out over local park all my decent finds in picture attached .Some signals I found were very iffy . I dug anyway to test if they were junk or not ..every time it was rubbish ..I discriminated the iron out on machine ..didn’t dig any iron…every time the numbers were steady within a couple of numbers it was always a valid find coin, pull tab ,bottle top etc..dug lots of coins including just over 15 in spendables and old round pound coins which can still cash in at the bank .just over 10% of machine already recouped.Woop woop.. I
Can’t wait to go to beach with this wonderful machine..
I really can’t praise Dr otek machine any higher..

FANTASTIC The Best value metal detector in my eyes .

Having been inspired by Oak Island and the irrepressible Gary Drayton, I decided to set off on the metal detecting journey as a side activity to do while out walking the dog – in all weathers – or jogging with my children while they’re on their bikes.
I’d seen countless strange depressions or unusual stone formations set in the middle of nowhere and I always wondered what might lie underneath. Initially, I purchased a ‘standard’ metal detector that simply beeped; this was fine for the ‘honeymoon’ period where finding horse shoes or indistinguishable lumps of scrap metal led to a delighted fist pump (while no one was watching) but this soon wore off after endless scrap. I needed something that was more engaging but I wasn’t prepared to get too ‘serious’ with hugely expensive equipment.
You see, the trouble with ‘beginner’ metal detectors is that you soon tire of the repetitive beep followed by minutes of digging, re-testing and digging more before being rewarded with just a rusty nail.
I was aware of the next step on the road being a discriminating metal detector, that will discern between types of metal, but the price bracket increases dramatically and often, as I’ve found with other items, value for money drops off.
A bit of research is always worth the time and I was pleased to see so many positive reviews for this model. On closer inspection it’s possible to get a discount voucher from their website which moves this model into the ‘affordable’ category without being excessive while still maintaining the brand quality.
It has a much more ‘professional’ feel compared to my last detector and allows for a Star Trek style tricorder analysis before you even have to think about expending the energy to dig. It gives an idea of depth and material with an impressive numerical digital scale. The detector uses different toned beeps for each type of metal which is a refreshing change from the same constant, monotonous tone that so many beginner detectorists are used to.
It’s an excellent detector and picks up more than my previous one while also filtering out the rusty nails of the world. This means I save huge amounts of time and effort as I can concentrate on the ‘intriguing’ responses (which often turn out to be bits of aluminium or costume jewellery) but this is worth the cost alone.
It also runs on a single 9v battery, unlike most other detectors I’ve experienced, and is incredibly lightweight. No seriously, it’s well-balanced and carries far less momentum which saves arm ache and reduces fatigue which is a major plus if you’re into serious marathon sessions.
I found it easy to put together and the detector is much sturdier than you’d expect given the feather-weight nature you feel. I forgot to mention it also has a very useful pinpoint function that is visual and auditory allowing you to narrow down the area significantly (it’s also fun to use) as it’s like something from a sci-fi movie.
All in all it’s the best intermediate detector around. It will up your productivity significantly while reducing associated frustrations with fleeting or phantom signals.
I found it was like stepping up from the Dark Ages to the Future and I’m sure you will too…

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am new to metal detecting. My Grandson had asked me to take him. Who am I to say no. That was the easy part. Then I was introduced to the difficult subject of what type of model to get and how much I could afford. I was lucky. I have a friend who started detecting two years ago. He took me through several different makes but kept Dr. Otek until last. This was the best starter model on the market he said. His son had just purchased the same model and was out virtually every evening after school detecting successfully with it. I live near an old WW1 Army garrison site now completely wooded. I have a great deal of ground to cover and what I like about this detector is it is so light. You can handle it for hours on end. Also, it has a great discrimination scale for buried objects of differing nature, ie Iron, copper, etc. I have been finding old cap badges and buttons, not amazing finds for most, but for my Grandson, it was just the ticket. I have to say I just love this bit of kit and the enjoyment we have both had from buying it. I even found an old two shilling coin whilst scanning a large puddle. Brilliant.

I received the metal detector on 17/06/2020 it was so easy and simple to assemble I dint even have to use the guide booklet even though it does come with clear instructions on how to assemble.its very light weight and has a very comfortable hand grip the metal detector is that well made and easy to use even my father in law has bought the same model to day 17/06/2020 I have only used it on my garden lawn and I have found a old 10p and a few penny’s at 8inch deep. I even put my gold ring on the ground and it detectord it 10inch above ground level. Very impressed with this equipment and looking forward to going out in the open fields what I have permission for of my local farm . This is a must buy and more to this machine then what other machines have . Great price range having spending 2 days looking for a metal detector I allways went back to look at this one. You will not be disappointed definitely deserves 5 *****

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is my first metal detector and I have never metel detected before. Being at a mature age I did my research reading reviews and watching You Tube. I found that the DR.OTEK MT-XR came out quite favourable and seemed to be the metal detector most suitable for me as a first time user. So I purchased one and when it arrived and set it up I was more than pleased with the product. It was easy to put together and lightweight to hold – unbelievably so. After reading the instrution manual ( which I recomend you should do ) I found it was easy to use. I have only been out with it for a few hours but i am hooked!!! I had loads of hits with lots of bottle tops and ring pulls as my main treasure but I am a beginer with lots to learn. I have been testing out various coins and other metal objects at home getting use to the differnt sounds and distances that each item gives off – a great way to learn and a brilliant way to get to understand your DR.OTEK metal detector. I am very very pleased with my purchase and I know I’m going to have lots of happy hours, days, years with my MT-XR.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our Users***This review has been updated – my initial review being at the top with an updated opinion underneath***

Having already owned an TEK – the beginner’s model – (and having been reasonably pleased with its performance) I decided to buy a slightly better model. I’m still a beginner and didn’t really want to spend too much money on something which might be part of a short-lived hobby. So I opted for this one, despite lots of people on the internet suggesting that you should always go for a reliable, trusted and well known brand.
And everything was going really well. In fact, to begin with, this model was finding lots of things that the beginner’s model didn’t. It was also very easy to use – the accuracy of the pin pointer was very good plus the accuracy of the discriminator seemed pretty good. Unfortunately, after using it through some wet grass, it started to go nuts – lots of constant bleeping, the pinpointing just pinpointed everywhere as a target and, eventually, it got to the point where I had to abandon detecting for the day.
I was actually gutted. Because it was, when it worked, VERY impressive. There must be an issue with the coil – a gap or exposed area around the wiring. So, I reluctantly packed it up and sent it back.
I have now spent 100+ more on the Garrett EuroAce. Which is, so far, a nice bit of kit.
I suppose you get what you pay for, sometimes.

    ***Updated review (19/05/2022)***

This is my second review of the MT-XR from DR TEK. My first review was full of praise for the MT-XR but admonished it for what appeared to be a reliability issue/fault with the detector.
Immediately after leaving that review I purchased a detector by Garrett (the Euro Ace) which is/was about 100 more than the MT-XR. I’ve been using the Ace for a couple of years and have been mostly very pleased with it, but I was recently given an opportunity by DR TEK to try out another MT-XR. I happily accepted the offer and several weeks/months later after testing it out in various environments (weather conditions and terrain) I’m prepared to say that I am very happy with its performance AND reliability: I had no issues or bugs this time around – I was satisfied that the detector was performing satisfactorily. Like with any detector, if the user isn’t familiar with how certain conditions and soil/sand types can affect feedback from the detector then they will become frustrated or confused by false signals or indiscriminate alerts. I’ll go into a little more detail about that shortly.
The detector itself, in my opinion, is ideally suited for those who have already tried metal detecting with a cheaper/beginner’s detector and want something with more power and features without having to spend big money that is usually required for high-end metal detectors. Garrett’s Euro Ace is around the 270 mark, whereas the MT-XR is approximately 100 cheaper. And, if I’m really honest about this, in some aspects it shows – the Garrett feels very solid and the plastics feel more robust than the MT-XR. The main console/head unit is also higher in quality. But then it should be, considering the price difference.
The MT-XR feels no heavier than the Garrett and, after making a couple of easy adjustments to the length of the arm, I quickly became comfortable with it. There are many things to like about the detector: it is really simple to use and very accurate (just as accurate as the Garrett). It won’t detect quite as deep as the Euro but that wasn’t really an issue. The discrimination can be easily adjusted to eliminate certain metals and the sensitivity can also be changed to allow for shallow or deeper searches – and this worked really well. Anybody new to detecting will eventually find out that beach metal detecting can be very frustrating and you have to be very mindful of depth, and possible subterranean pooling/saturation of seawater (which will give endless false alerts). For this reason you need to have a detector that you can trust to eliminate as many of these false alerts as possible. You’ll still get some but that’s just the “beauty” of beach metal detecting! Overall the MT-XR worked just as well as the Garrett: good accuracy and the selected discriminations worked well. I would even go as far as to say that the MT-XR was slightly better in some aspects: I like the numerical feedback given for each metal detected – this is quite important when trying to gauge what you’ve just detected without having to dig it up. I also like the adjustable sound levels (this is something the Euro Ace doesn’t have – you have to wear headphones, have the sound off or annoy everybody within 50 metres every time your detector detects metal!).
    So, the Pros & Cons:

    Pros
*Reasonably priced for a detector that compares well with more expensive detectors.
    *Accurate & reliable.
    *Plenty of good features.
    *Simple to use.
*Great for anybody not wishing to commit big $ but still wanting good performance.

    Cons.
*Doesn’t feel or look as robust as some established brands (although I never managed to damage it despite putting it through its paces) – the main console feels like it needs strengthening.
*Doesn’t detect quite as deep as mid-price-range detectors.

    Overall verdict.
This is a great value detector that is an ideal bridge from beginner’s detectors up to mid/high range detectors.
Metal detectors can be REALLY expensive. Anybody who is either thinking of taking up metal detecting or is considering buying a better model than an existing starter model will have seen many YouTubers who use very expensive detectors and will feel obliged to spend more than they really need or want to. You don’t need to spend big money to get a detector that does the basics and does them well. The MT-XR is proof of this – it is perfect for anybody thinking of committing to metal detecting but wants to make sure that being a detectorist is something they can enjoy before spending too much money.
    Happy Bleeping!

Recently i decided to give metal detecting ago, so after doing some research on Amazon and also Youtube i settled for the DR.OTEK MT-XR metal detector as it had alot of good reviews.
    .
When it arrived it only took me about 10 minutes to assemble without having to use the instructions. The detector itself is extremely light and very easy to use. You can also extend and shorten the length of the stem so ideal for kids and adults..
The different types of metals that it detects are displayed on screen in the way of icons. When it detects something the icon relating to that metal starts to flash and there is audible beep from the speaker built in under the display module.
Ive only used it a couple of times in the farmers field next to the house, and managed to come across an old horseshoe, so hopefully im going to have alot of fun trying to find old coins etc. I would recommend the MT-XR to any beginners like myself.

Please note that this is my first detector although i have used others owner by a couple of friends. I did quite a bit of research when looking for my first detector and finally decided on the Dr Otek. it has many features that you do not find on beginner / entry level detectors. The unit is very light and comfortable to use, i have arthritis so a heavy detector is out of the question for me. The soft grip handle is excellent and the ergonomic angle at which your hand grips keeps the wrist straight and stable. Both the position of the control console and support bracket are adjustable for comfortable use. while the detector is easy to assemble it does not collapse down quickly for storage like some other do, this is a issue if you have limited boot / car space although the coil can be removed or adjusted to fit a smaller boot better. using the unit is easy to understand for the beginner but I would recommend reading the instructions and following the set-up guide for first use. Out in the field the detector has performed well and I have used it on the beach and fields, the pinpoint feature is very good and really helps to trace your finds although i would still recommend getting a dedicated pinpointer handheld probe as this is especially useful for smaller finds. the detector has several modes to discriminate various metals so you don’t find junk all the time, it has a back-lit display which is good in low light conditions, battery life has been excellent running on just 1 9v battery, the detector has a depth range of around 8-10 inches at max range. built in speaker is clear and has 3 volume settings – i find low setting fine for normal use, a headphone socket is also provided. All-in-all I have been very impressed with the detector, its good value for money and would recommend it if you are looking to start detecting.

I’ve always wanted to go metal detecting in my spare time without wanting to spend hundreds, but I also wanted something that would actually work well. After endless time looking at endless models and reviews I plumped for this one.

So here is a point by point review to make your decision as easy and simply as possible !

    1) It takes a couple of minutes to put together which is as easy as it gets.

    2) it has all the function modes that you need to go looking for old coins and jewellery etc and you can work out exactly how to use it in a matter of minutes. It really is very easy to use. Trust me on this as I find all technology a nightmare to wrok out these days !

It has enough buttons and features that are all accessed by the press of a button. You won’t lose your mind having to go through endless combinations like in some top of the range cars multimedia system !

Once you find something there is a pinpoint button which is really fantastic as it tells you exactly the spot you need to be digging !

    3) It is very lightweight and so you can use it for hours on end in great comfort and comes with an option of different length settings and has a lovey foam handle where you grip.

    4) You get exactly what you pay for when it comes to how sturdy the machine is !

It is sturdy enough to last for years provided that you take care of it and treat it with care. Some of the fixings are all palstic. So you cannot over tighten things and you cannot throw the machine down to the ground every time you find something and want to start digging. When you put in in the car when you go home or store it away you need to do so away from the kids and you have to make sure that you don’t bang it about or that it keeps falling over in the cupboard as eventually it will break. This is not an industrial machine.

    5) The coil and the whole stem of the machine are waterproof but the display area is not. So if you want to take it into a deep stream you can do so with no fear but you cannot use this in the pouring rain.

The display can also be illuminated for use at night which is a great feature often not found even on the more expensive detectors.

    6) For what you pay you will never be disappointed with this machine ! I have found so much stuff but have yet to strike it rich !

For the price this really is absolutely everything that you will need to get you going and it won’t be a purchase that you end up thinking, ” I wish I had bought a more expensive machine “. It really works very well indeed and comes with a cracking guarantee !

Eventually if I find anything of value I will buy a really top end machine, but until I do there is absolutely no need for me to even think about doing so as this really does the job very well.

    Hope this helps !

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOk…. So…. I have never owned a metal detector before and have always been a little skeptical about how accurate they can be with differentiating metals and producing accurate readings. I have to say the unit itself is extremely professional looking and more importantly, very light and comfortable. I have found the operation of it intuitive and self explanatory. The display is good, easy to read, backlit, and doesn’t look like a toy, yet does tell you what you need to know. The depth guage is clear and the discrimination categories seem to be accurate. I have tested the categorisation of metal and the targeted metal mode with a known precious metal and against iron junk with perfect results. You may see some other comments here about detection speed which I have found is just a case of understanding the science behind how it works. The unit works on change of magnetic field, therefore it needs to sweep to see a change. It can seem like the unit lags a little with detection but what I have observed is that the trailing edge of the coil on each sweep is when you will hear the indication. This is actually a benefit from my understanding as it enables me to make X and y sweeps of a target. This in turn really accurately pinpoints visually using the trailing edge as a visual reference. This would be harder to do if the centre of the coil was where the audible indication was actioned. The pinpoint mode works really, really well. I would advise making circle shapes at height from the target as if measuring around the top of a beach ball on the ground. This makes the coil measure at the edge of the detection sphere and really helps identify the sweet spot at dead centre before you close in.
I have done my first attempts at finding treasure in my back garden as most people do, and within minutes had my first 3 finds. I honestly couldn’t believe how clear the positioning was and how easy it was to confidently dig a hole certain something was to be found! I went on to notice some perceived false positives throughout a single sweep and started think false positive deltas had crept in and this was the compromise on not spending twice as much on a known unit. However. I was wrong. What in actual fact was going on was the sheer amount of junk under my lawn!! Old nails. Ring pulls, wire fencing, you name it… All manner of junk. Frustratingly I need to dig up all that nonsense before I can be entirely certain the elusive gold coin isn’t being hidden in among all the noise!! I did get a little excited when I used discrimination mode and eliminated the 2 lower categories (iron junk) and got a hit…. Woo hoo…. Ring pull circa ,1980’s… Haha…. Still… Proves that function works….
You know what…. Overall I really have nothing bad to say about this machine at all, although I recommend using headphones with an online volume so you can Lower the amplitude in analogue for comfort. I honestly believe this machine could suffice the needs of most detectorists and hold its own up against much more expensive kit. Well done Dr Otek. Top marks.

    Top marks. Accurate. Comfy. Intuitive.

I borrowed a cheap-ish detector from my father-in-law and had been using it for a while, before taking the plunge and buying my own. I did a fair amount of research on entry level detectors and I read and watched a number of reviews on this model. What came up, time and again, was how this detector had all the functionality of a detector twice its price, with the built-in features being much more representative of an intermediate level detector.

When it arrived, I was pleasantly shocked by the compact packaging and just how lightweight it was. I put it together within a few minutes – it is very self-explanatory, but there are instructions. I was immediately pleased by the spring-loaded buttons on the stem (think elbow crutches) with enough notches to cater for any height individual.

The size of the coil was good, too, and I prefer the open style of the layout, enabling you to see through the centre part of the coil to help identify the exact spot on the ground of any signal. The detector has four modes: all metal, discriminatory, memory and jewellery. They are well explained in the manual and very easy to operate.

There are three tonal sounds, depending on the signal received back from the metal being detected. This further helps you to discriminate as to whether you will investigate the object further. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack, too, as well as three levels of volume adjustment.

Lastly, and most impressively in my opinion, is the pinpoint function. Once you have detected a target, with a press of a button, you can switch into pinpoint mode. The closer you then get to the target, the more rapid and high pitched the tonal response. Just be aware, the highest and most rapid tone is when the outside of the coil crosses the target, not the centre.

Top product and great value for money.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIt was our first time using a detector, this product was rated highly in Amazon, which in truth was a little more than we expected to pay as novices, but we wanted a reliable product. It was easy to assemble, fairly lightweight and functionality was pretty simple. We used it once so far with great delight, although one draw back was it would bleep under the 40 range, then gave ONE single spike of 80 or more, which had us really excited, then reverted back to below 40 when hovering over the area again. It’s most probably our inexperience in using detectors, but like I said using it was simple enough, therefore couldn’t understand the random high spikes. Love the product and look forward to having more adventures with it!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have never owned a metal detector before and was debating whether to go for this or the Garrett 250. At the time of looking, the Garrett was retailing at 185, whereas the MT-XR was 130. I understand the MT-XR has previously been as low as 100, so I wondered whether many of the positive reviews considered it good value at this price rather than what I paid.

In the end, I made the decision to purchase the (cheaper) MT-XR because the video reviews I watched suggested it was of similar build & quality to the Garrett 250.

The detector arrived very quickly via Prime. The box was surprisingly compact and lightweight. I have attached a photo of the contents. Assembly only took one pair of hands, no tools and about 10 minutes. The instructions are very easy to follow, although there are some errors in spelling & grammar – I understand it was produced in China and doesn’t seem to have been proof-read, despite appearing to target a mainly American market. I say this because the display, like the Garrett, tells you what type of coin you are likely to have found (all American denominations). The user manual does suggest what these might be if you are detecting English coins.

The user manual covers the various different modes on the detector, what the signals mean, how to discriminate against certain metals, how to use the built in pinpointer etc. I have deducted one star from the product review because the package contained a card detailing information to validate the 2 year warranty. I navigated to the website on the card and the link was broken. My detector is therefore not currently under warranty.

The detector is incredibly lightweight and really easy to swing. I now understand what many reviews meant when they mentioned this. I haven’t used it for hours on end, but I imagine this wouldn’t leave your arm or shoulder feeling sore. The hand grip and support is good and the height of the detector can be adjusted to cater for all sizes (no aching backs!)

The only thing that surprised me with the detector was the number of plastic components. This wasn’t evident in the images of it. The head appears to be plastic, as do many of the sections that you tighten. The main lengths making up the detector are a lightweight metal. As I say, I haven’t owned detectors before so this may be completely normal, particularly for one at the lower end of the price range. Whether this will prove to be durable or not, time will tell.

I tested the detector using various metals including nails, assorted coins and keys. If you do not use headphones, the detector is quite loud, even on the quietest setting. I found the quietest setting when using noise-cancelling headphones to be just fine. The audio jack is the same as you would find on a mobile phone and is just beneath the control unit. The control unit is simple to follow and I understand it has a backlight, although I haven’t found the need to use this yet.

Within about an hour of using the detector on a small section of land in the back garden (approximately 6m2), I found a number of items – nothing of value, mind you! The detector was useful in pointing out the type of metal it was likely to be and the approximate depth. The built in pin pointer was very intuitive and helped to find the precise location of the metal. I think I will probably look to get a handheld pinpointer too though – once the hole is dug, it would be far simpler to scan the turf/soil that has been dug out and the hole with the pinpointer rather than reach for the detector again and use the pinpointer function on this.

All in all, I’m very happy with the purchase at this stage. I now just need to gain permissions to use it on some open farms/green spaces, which is proving difficult to attain.

Edit 28/04: The warranty webpage is now working again and I have managed to validate this. I have now used the detector on a slightly larger area of land and found a number of metallic objects including modern coins, kids toys, lead piping and agricultural metal. There were a few instances where signals were strong and repeated. The pinpointer honed in on these and told me there were metals at 2″, 4″ and 6″ depths. I proceeded to dig holes on a few occasions, going as deep as 10″. The detector would then pick up no signal in the hole and no signal of the material removed from the hole. This has led me to question the device and how reliable it is. These aren’t the odd bleeps but repeated signals in the 80s and 90s.

    Punching above its weight!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhen I started looking around for a metal detector, I wasn’t sure what I should be looking for as far as features. Everything looked either cheap and basic ‘toys’ or very expensive pieces of kit that were for people that knew what they were doing.

I’d never heard of the Dr Otek brand and had initially disregarded their detectors on the basis of ‘nothing that cheap could be any good’. It wasn’t until I had done more research into the features I wanted in a detector that the MT-XR model came up again. There simply wasn’t anything available in the that price bracket that had similar features. In fact, to find similar features in better known brands such as Garrett or Minelab I’d have to spend almost 3 times as much.

The Dr Otec MT-XR certainly doesn’t disappoint. It appears to be well made and surprisingly sturdy for such a lightweight detector. The notch discrimination and sensitivity work very well and the digital numerical readout (almost unheard of on models in this price range) is very accurate. The screen is easy to read in bright sunshine, and the back-lit display is a great added feature. Having a standard headphone socket keeps things simple (I’ve noticed some more expensive brands use special connectors, so you are limited to what headphones you can use), and the three increment volume control on the device itself is pretty handy if you’re not using a headset. At its highest volume you’d easily hear signals over other sounds on the beach or wherever you are detecting.

I’d highly recommend this model for anyone looking for their first metal detector, and even to those who have been using metal detectors for a while. You don’t need to spend hundreds on a Garrett to get a good, reliable detector.

I’d love to see Dr Otek come out with a protective carry bag for this model, and especially a rain cover for the display panel, but there really is nothing that I could criticise in the detector itself. An added bonus was that when ordering from amazon, we expected delivery to take 7 days, and it arrived within 36 hours! Superb service!

I purchased the DR.TEK Lightweight Metal Detector for Adults after toying with the idea of owning a detector for some years. I have been actively looking, adding to the basket and researching.
I finally took the plunge when I saw this model. It appeared to have everything I was looking for, simplistic, yet effective, light weight and great for beginners. Of course the proof would be in the pudding as they say.
Delivered ahead of schedule, the box arrived. Well packaged and damage free. The detector was checked for parts and assembled. Super easy. A key feature for me was that it should be lightweight. I have a back and arm injury. This model is perfect. No issues at all with carrying or moving it around.
Following the instructions, I did some test sights. The display is really helpful in narrowing down potential finds . These can be eliminated from the display . The display together with the sounds, which are easily told apart really helped know what you might find. I then took it out to my front garden which has a lot less debris in it ( garden currently under construction) and again found it easy to use, with a real air of excitement for potential finds. My daughter found the whole thing quite amusing, but once she gave it a try, she was also hooked. We discovered some coins and a charm from her bracelet, lost a few years ago!
Obviously under current circumstances, this is a really odd time to be buying something like this, but I have not been disappointed. I aim to practise my skills during lockdown with a view to venturing out very soon. I am over the moon!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAfter much research, and looking at customer reviews, I decided to get the MT-XR. I know people have mentioned the packaging, but I didn’t buy it for the box. The detector was easy to assemble, with the clear instructions. I manage to tune it with various metals, and seems to work well. I have done some detecting in the garden (due to covid-19 lockdown) and have found small bits of metal. I can’t wait to do some proper sweeping in the land we got. My impressions are this will make a great first time user detector for all ages, it is adjustable and very light. It has a good 2 year warranty period, so make sure you register when you get one.

After lots of research online, I decided to buy the MT-XR detector. Being new to the hobby I didn’t want to spend a lot of money initially. It seems now, after using it on a friends wet allotment that this machine is as good as his (a different make) which cost nearly twice as much.
On arrival, the machine took only a few minutes to assemble and the handbook supplied is really easy to understand and follow. The detector is extremely light and the handle length adjustment means it can be comfortably used for hours by anyone.
My friends allotment has given up a lot of objects but not many particularly old although I did find a horse shoe buried nearly 10 inches deep. The rest of my finds have been a belt buckle, hand tools, 2 old pennies and a pound coin. The discrimination setting works really accurately and the display is clear and easy to read.
Further pluses are adjustable volume, a back light on the control panel, quite a large water proof coil, depth indicator and sensitivity control. It also comes with a battery to get you started.
I would highly recommend this machine to anyone.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersHaving become addicted to The Curse Of Oak Island and Gary(Bobby Dazzler)Drayton I decided to do some research into a decent entry level detector, and this one seemed to be the one everyone was giving great praise, so decided to go ahead and purchase, and I am very happy I did so, OK so it’s not the cheapest on the market at a little over 110, but the features it has are normally only seen on detectors twice the price at least, to start it is very light and balanced to operate, meaning less stress on your arm on long hunts, also seems very well made, item arrived next day, and was built and working within 10 mins, easily adjustable for difrent sizes, I am over 6 foot tall and don’t have it fully extended. The item easily detects different metals clearly (as my little video shows) although I did have to turn sensitivity down to demonstrate, as kept picking up
flooring nails under carpet, but i did expect that, so all in all if you are looking for a decent detector I would definitely recommend this one, and let’s be honest if you have read this far you know you want one,

Detector arrived on time as per delivery ,in a plain outer box so ideal if its a present. Simple assembly and very light ideal to be swinging this detector all day . First time ever detecting and after reading all reviews good and bad i thought i would try it anyway and make my own mind up. So a few tries in the garden with carefully placed coins to get the feel of the detector and noises it makes and what the display shows. Now off to the beach and was picking up loads of nails and screws etc in dry sand to a depth of 8 inches, the wife got a signal of 80 to 95 ( never seen her so excited) but we couldn’t find the source but the spot is noted and back with a sifter to go through the sand. So into the wet sand which i think needs a bit more practice as although we turned on the detector in the sea water as recomended and turned the sensativity down to 3 we seemed to be getting so many false signals although i put a 2p onder a flat rock which the wife found with ease i then burried a 1 coin 6 inches and noted the spot and she picked that up quite easily (i had to tell her what i did though ) . So in all i think for the money we had a very good day on the beach and the detector worked fairly well ,i spoke to a guy with 800 of detector and he had no better luck than me so if your on a budget like me go for Dr Otek and give it a try. Different beach in 2 days time and i will give an update how it goes.
Well 3 different days and 3 different beaches my conlusion is if you want to detect in wet sand forget it because whatever we did with settings etc we had no positive signals or just false signals (digging for nothing ) so frustrating we gave up on that idea,on dry sand it seemed to work better .I think we will have to spend a few more pounds and buy something better ,this Dr Otek is going back in the box destined for the car boot sale

Easy to follow instructions and use

What a great metal detector this is! I’ve been wanting to get a detector for a while and having looked at a few I decided on the DR.OTEK. Firstly the delivery was prompt like it always is with Prime. They said the detector is lightweight and their not lying, when the parcel arrived I opened the box to find the detector in a number of parts and within minutes are was good to go. What makes it even more helpful is that it comes with a battery which is included which saves you having to get one especially if this is going to be a Christmas/birthday present. So on my first outing I took it to the local beach, now like all metal detectors their not magic so you gave to be patient with it. The controls are straightforward and simple to work. The DISC setting is a good feature if you want to search just for certain metal types. It also has a built in PinPoint finder which is a good feature. I returned home and tried the DR. OTEK in my garden and then I found my first item which you can see in the picture. With a few sweeps across the grass I had a decent signal which came up on the LCD display which has a back light if the natural light is fading. This stays on for 10 minutes then it goes off, you then press and hold the volume power button for 2 seconds and it comes back on. Overall this is a great detector for beginners and amateur dectorists alike. It has some great features and is extremely lightweight. You can also reduce the length of the stem by pressing in the 2 silver buttons to fit in the boot of your car. I would definitely recommend this detector if your thinking of taking up the hobby.

Fantastic lightweight, easy to use metal detector. 5*

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWell it took me quite a bit of time watching YouTube videos and reading reviews before I bought my metal detector the MT-XR. I have done a little metal detecting before but not a lot but enough to know what I want. So far after a couple of days use I cant fault the machine. It’s very light and extremely easy to use and understand. Right from out of the box it assembled easily and quickly. I also bought the pin pointer which is brilliant too. The detector has an excellent pin point feature of it’s own but I would still advise buying the separate pip pointer. Its light and easy to use when sorting through the earth for the treasure your detector is telling you is there. My only negative is the controller isn’t fully waterproof but I just wrapped it in clear plastic and kept on going even in the worst of Scottish rain. I think a water proof cover is coming from the company soon according to one YouTube reviewer.

Fantastic value for a well put together full feature detecting.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersBought for myself after watching the Dectectorists and needed to get out more. I did quite a bit of research across the net (watching and reading reviews etc). Opted for this one due to the good reviews, ease of use and price that was being offered at the time (Its got all the features of more expensive machines).
It’s simple and very easy to put together, it was done in a matter of minutes. Requires a battery which was included (nice touch). The instruction booklet is great, easy to follow and printed well. The machine itself is lightweight so you can head out for hours at a time and you won’t feel like you need to keep stopping to give your arms/back a rest.
I have only used in my garden so far due to the good old English weather but the results are impressive.
For me, it needed to be as simple to use as possible and there has been no complaints so far. The settings allow you to search for any kind of metal with high sensitivity and you can choose what kind of metal is being detected.
All feedback so far is positive so would definitely recommend this for people of all ages who fancy trying their hand at metal detecting. In short this metal detector is pretty awesome! I love the design of it. It is very simple to setup and use straight away.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersThis is my first metal detector in a while. The last one was quite heavy giving me backache as soon as I started using it. No problem with this Dr Otek MT-XR, really lightweight and easy to handle. Putting it together was very simple and easy. The instructions are precise so setup was brilliant, been out already and found a few coins one was over 6 inches deep! Pinpoint and descriminator are fantastic, these MD have moved on a lot since 20 years ago! Thoroghly recommend this to anyone just beginning or experienced.

I am new to the hobby so didn’t want to spend a fortune on a setup but didn’t want a cheap and nasty one so I spent a lot of time researching online and on you tube etc before making my purchase and I can truly say I made the right choice, this unit is super light weight and easy to assemble, it’s also very easy to operate and after comparing it to my friends more expensive models I can say with its features and performance I would not have been disappointed if it had cost me twice the price!! All in all I can say that for the price you will not find a better metal detector add to this a 24 month warranty you end up with a no brainer…. Buy one now, awesome bit of kit!

Review update. Pics of finds added.... Awesome detecto

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersJust getting into the hobby of metal detecting so didn’t want to spend lots of money on top of the range equipment. I searched the internet for entry level metal detectors and came up with the usual established brands with their brand price tags, then I saw the Dr Otek MT-XR, the price was right and it promised features only found on more expensive intermediate models, so what was the catch. Had they sacrificed build quality or performance. I searched the internet for meaningful reviews by experienced metal detectorists but found there were very few such reviews. The few I did find were very favourable so I gave it a chance and purchased the MT-XR.
It arrived promptly and in good condition. The MT-XR was easy to put together and as well as being light weight felt sturdy. It came with a battery so I went outside and created a test bed using nails, ring pulls, and Uk coins all buried in the earth at varying depths from 2 inches to 8 inches. The machine correctly identified the target and its depth, the pin pointer mode was useful and accurate enough to locate the targets.
I have to say that the MT-XR has lived up to the good reports I had read on it. For the price I could not have found a better device. As to its durability only time will tell but from the sturdy feel of it and its performance so far I expect it will last me for some time to come.

Golden Review Award: 35 From Our UsersThis is the 1st metal detector I have ever owned and wasnt expecting much from it, mainly because of the price compared to other machines that are recommended for beginners. However I have been quite surprised how well it works. It is very easy to setup and get started and the instructions are plain and simple to understand. We took it to the beach near us to try it out and were getting lots of good signals with it. We were finding some things buried quite deep in the sand and the display was giving accurate depth readings, no treasure yet unfortunately but it was all good fun and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking to try metal detecting but doesn’t have alot of money to spend.

Golden Review Award: 64 From Our UsersAfter much research I bought the MT-XR model. Other models with the same functionality come in around 1.5 to 2 times the price of the MT-XR. It took me know more that 3 to 5 minutes to assemble and it even came with a battery. All locking nuts and screws are integril and therefore no tools required – result !!!. Its light weight to use and the screen is large and clear – see photos. Headed into back garden and got first signals, this is where you see that the Target ID indicators (ie what material find is most likely to be), find depth and pin point mode are great. The full functionalty will take a bit of practice, but you can get up and running within minutes. They have a support e mail as well and promise to get back in 24 hours.

Quality, easy assemble, intuitive to operate
