My Garmin watch records how many miles I cover when out and about but that is not the case when on the turbo trainer. My trainer came with a cadence sensor only, so I fitted this to the axle of the back wheel to monitor distance covered. No need to switch on or off, just ride and it wakes up and connects to my Garmin watch alongside my cadence sensor which is a different make. Do not fit it till you’ve set it up otherwise you’ll be removing it again, it can be a little fiddly while getting your fingers through the spokes but once done, it really is a fit and forget. Think if I was using this on the road that I would place a cable tie around it as extra security, you wouldn’t want to lose it.

They are ok! On the pricey side but I guess you have all the garmin kid is good to have them. If you want to save some quid plenty of choices out there but always cheap stuff turns to be very expensive so I prefer to play safe and get something good at once.

Firstly my Amazon order didn’t actually arrive and due to needing them for a long ride I ended up paying an extra 10 to buy from a local shop. Got a refund so no massive issues really.
Fitting was easy and pairing went well with no issues. So far they seem to track pretty accurate and I am happy.
Amazon were fantastic with the refund so cannot complain there but it’s a shame I didn’t get the deal price as when ordered.
Overall I think these are really good and works great with my 1040

I used this on an exercise bike along with my Garmin Edge 25 to keep track of my cadence when riding along to Apple Fitness + cycling videos. Very easy to install on the bike and just held it near the Edge 25 to get it to connect when on the add sensor screen in the settings menu.

Difficult to know how accurate it is, but seems right when riding to a song with a certain beats per minute.

Looking forward to trying it on my road bike when the weather is warmer.

I have to say the device itself and it’s easy installation are great. Where it has been left down is the glitchy companion app. I took two or three times to get it setup do to the app stalling or continually stuck in a loop. That being said once it was said up it is very straight forward and I really like it. I think the ride time maybe slightly off but I’m sure in future updates it will be resolved.

I got this because the GPS on my Garmin Edge 830 was great and recorded speed well but not if you are in a forest with a lot of overhead coverage. Took me 2 minutes to install and linked quickly and I was recording speeds in the forest and my cadence straight away

I bought this Garmin sensor bundle to replace the old versions that I’ve had for many years. I was disappointed to find that both batteries were dead when I unboxed them. It would make sense to put some sort of tab in the battery compartment to stop them draining when they are moving in transit.

  21. Anonymous says:

Garmin uses both GPS and speed sensor. I think it is based on the speed sensor first, it gives more precise information with the speed sensor and confirms it with gps-glonass. Right now I am measuring my speed from the gps, but the tunnel etc. It cannot measure the speed when passing through places, it cannot give as much serial information as the speed sensor during sudden stops or accelerations, and this affects the average speed. It measures the cadence very well, does not measure the speed, it is selected as speed / cadence in the settings, but it does not read any speed.

If this is what you are looking for then it works well. The speed sensor seems basically useless though if using a watch which uses gps – handy for a bike with no speed sensor but i don’t use any of the data as the watch defaults to gps. Was 55 ish when bought.

The devices are relatively easy to install and pair with Garmin devices. As soon as I start to ride my bike the data is automatically fed to my Garmin Fenix 6 and Garmin 1030 Plus. Although I suspect the bands attaching the cadence device to the crack is probably sufficient, I have added a couple of additional black rubber bands just to be sure it doesn’t get knocked off.

I got it to use it on the bike when I’m on the turbo trainer, as mine is just a dumb trainer with no sensors. It works brilliantly. The only slight issue I had was with the initial set up: my watch (garmin 735) kept detecting the cadence sensor and not the speed sensor but simply moving it away meant the speed sensor connected and ever since, both sensors connect automatically and with no bother. Would highly recommend both sensors!

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersI bought the speed and cadence sensor for my spin bike, so for those asking whether or not you can use these on a spin bike, the answer is yes provided that there is enough room for the speed sensor to fit on the flywheel mount at the front of the bike (see pictures for reference).

Overall, you can’t fault the product. It’s worked great for me, is accurate as far as I’m concerned, allowing me to track data from my workouts. One thing to note, you NEED to do your research into what this thing can pair up with…I’ve seen so many reviews on here saying that it’s not pairing…that’s down to user error, not the product itself. Follow the instructions, and videos on youtube to see best ways to pair.

The way I use it: I have a Garmin Vivosmart4 (basic fitness watch, a bit like a fitbit) and thus already use the Garmin Connect app. You can easily pair the Speed Sensor to the Garmin Connect app by just going into the ‘Devices’ settings. (Note that because you can’t see live workouts via the app….you will not be able to pair the Cadence sensor to the Garmin Connect app!) Your speed sensor data (distance, highest and average speed etc) will just be uploaded as an activity when you finish your exercise. In order to see the live data, I use a free app called Cadence – on this, you can easily pair both Speed and Cadence sensors (as well as a heart rate monitor if you so wish) and have everything displayed on one screen. This will show your distance, speed, RPM etc. (I love this app as you can also switch between indoor and outdoor cycling, so perfect for me on a static spin bike).

Relatively quick and easy to install (cadence sensor strap a little fiddley but didnt take long to secure) and are now tightly in place. The cadence sensor comes with 3 different size plastic straps to go around the pedal, I had to use the biggest. The speed sensor comes in a silicone case so the strap is stretchy…that being said, I had to be a bit creative with an elastic band as on the spin bike the fixture is a lot thicker than a normal bike. Both sensors automatically switch on when moved so no need to fiddle around before each workout.

Overall, can’t fault it. The product is definitely worth the money compared to cheaper alternatives on the market, materials feel quality too.

Hopefully the review can help answer some questions others have had!

    Great piece of kit!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersPaired easily with my Forerunner 35 watch (Settings/Sensors) after a few turns of the wheel. Didn’t see a flashing LED as the manual suggested I would. No need to measure tyre circumference as apparently the wheel size is automatically calibrated on compatible Garmin devices. Tested it on a turbo trainer by setting the watch to ‘Bike’ with indoors chosen and worked a treat. Only two rides so far but impressed with the simplicity.

I really didn’t know why I wanted to buy this sensor as my Garmin computer measured speed/distance very well but I read that this would enable my computer to work when I put the bike indoors on the rollers. This really works well and it is possible to really work on fitness etc. I would hope that I don’t have to but I would buy this again!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThis is a good device, it’s easy to attach to the bike and very simple to use.
The manual seems to expect you to already know what you’re doing so personally I’d search the web for some help setting up. I did, and I’m fine.
It does work with the phone app but for best results you should definitely interface it directly with your Garmin device – ie smart watch. I have a Vivoactive 3 and it’s a great companion to give me speed monitoring when I’m using my bike trainer indoors.
Remember that it takes 2 rotations to switch on. So when training, jump on your trainer, do a few pedal strokes and stop… then set your watch running.

I decided to stay true to Garmin, as all my other bike gadgets are Garmin (despite the other seller ones being cheaper). It is a good little design and a bit fiddly to get on but not hard, All was working well but now Zwift cannot always find the speed sensor, even when the pedal is moving. I have to take it off the back wheel, take the battery out, put it back in, back on the bike, and it usually works after that. Shouldn’t really have to do this and I have only had it just over a week so the battery shouldn’t be wearing out.

This kit was very easy to install on my bike, paired very easily with my bike computer and seem to give very accurate readings. The only downside is that because of their accuracy, they don’t make you seem like a cycling god who should be in the olympic team, and instead they point out to your friends why you are always at the back of the group!

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI am using this on an indoor exercise bike. Installing couldn’t be easier, both attached to the pedal crank arm. Cadence sensor paired flawlessly, the speed sensor unfortunately came with a flat battery. Annoying as this meant spending time searching for a cr 2032. Once new battery installed this also paired flawlessly.
Setting the wheel size can be tricky. I knew that at approx 65rpm I covered 2km in 5 minutes. 65*5=325. 2000m / 325= 6150mm. Setting this as the wheel size ( circumstance not diameter) saw this within 2 seconds at 2km. Fine tune another time.
    Update
Speed sensor did automaticially switch on when pedalling. Moved the speed sensor from the crank arm to the bottom of the crank, ie in same relative position & orientation as if fitted to wheel hub, however this did not resolve the problem. Swapped to road bike, still not switching on. Removed & replaced battery the sensor then came to life. Contacted Amazon who contacted Garmin on my behalf. Upshot new speed sensor on way. Great service, in resolving this frustrating situation.

Excellent accessory to your training experience

Not the cheapest for 4 stars but there’s is nothing else to gripe about. Attachment easy with the supplied silicone rubber hoops. Connects after a couple of rotations of the pedals to my Garmin 130 with ease. So far battery has lasted over 10 hours without issue so I can’t yet comment on the battery life claims but it does what it says it does, and I cannot complain.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought both the speed sensor and cadence sensor as a pair to use in tandem with my “dumb trainer” during lockdown.

The items arrived very quickly and were super easy to install.

I’ve been using them for a month now and they have continued to be consistently accurate when providing rear wheel speed and crank cadence.

One small tip is that you may need to position your Ant+ sensor where it is unobstructed by something like a table. A USB extension cable might be on your list if you’re using a PC. For me on my phone, it works nicely.

    Super low budget zwifting!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersTruth be told, I bought these Garmin sensors because I wanted them. I didn’t need them – my 9 speedcadence sensor from Aldi has done a perfectly good enough job, reliably for the last year. But somehow I convinced myself of th convenience of these that could easily be moved between my bikes, even though buying another one from Aldi would have been cheaper and easier.

That said… I love the fact that these from Garmin don’t require any magnets or aligned sensors, and they’re far neater than the cheaper alternatives. They’re so compact that you actually can’t really see them, especially the case for the speed sensor which wraps round the back wheel hub.

I’ve connected them to my Garmin ForeRunner 935. When I first tried to get them to connect, I couldn’t get the cadence sensor to work, so I took the battery back off in case there was a plastic battery blocker. There wasn’t. And when I put it back together, I either broke something or didn’t put it together properly because I couldn’t get it to power on for the next fourty minutes. Eventually, I managed to put it back together in a way that aligned the contacts and it now works fine. I’m not looking forward to replacing the battery though. This is the reason for the lost star in the review.

Connectivity is reliable and accurate. Never any delay or lost moments.

In hindsight. I will use these for races, and I’d have extra confidence in these kind staying put, as they don’t need to remain aligned with other sensors. It’d be easy to accidentally knock them out of place mid-race, so perhaps the extra money is well spent!

This is the easiest tech to set up. Within 10 minutes I had my bike in a clamp stand, the sensors attached to the bike, and both sensors calibrated and ready to ride.

I’ve been a very satisfied Sigma user for over a decade, but the Garmin tech is attractive because of its simplicity (no magnets!) and instant connection to the head unit, using Ant+.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this sensor to use with a Garmin Edge 520 computer and planned to swap it between my winter bike and a static spin bike. Only used it on my winter bike so far (Norco Search) and it works a treat.
Set up was a doddle (just need to find the right menu on your Garmin) – as soon as you put the battery in the cadence sensor it was found wirelessly by the Garmin Edge. Once the sensor & computer are paired, there’s nothing else you need to do: the Garmin Edge automatically links to the sensor every time I switch the computer on.
Out on the road, the display on the Garmin updates to changes in cadence within a second or two. I’s behaved perfectly & hasn’t dropped out/lost signal so far over 5 or 6 rides, despite some foul weather.
When you first come to insert the battery, you do need to be careful, as other people have said, but it’s not that tricky.
The stretchy band that mounts the sensor to your pedal is nice & secure. It wouldn’t be too difficult to regularly swap between two bikes as I’d planned, but I think I’ll move a wired Cat Eye cadence sensor from my summer bike & permanently mount that onto the Spin bike, then swap this wireless sensor bi-annually between the two road bikes.
    Great piece of kit!
