Ordered this, as trying to find ways of saving on using the gas in my house due to the current energy prices. I have used the microwave – Which is great and alot more powerful with 900W. I have also tested the convection oven out with quiches and frozen chips, and cooked both of them within 25 minutes, using little electricity and obviously no gas. Yes it is a little noisy, but nothing that bugs me. Instruction leaflet is clear, and to be honest does not take two minutes to understand how the oven works. Very Happy with this, hopefully giving me some savings on not using the gas oven.

We like not having to fiddle with a moving turntable. The power is great. The combination of micro and grill makes for good chips and baked potatoes etc. Terrific all round performe

    Great purchase

So this is a combination microwave, offering both grilling and a normal convection oven in addition to the microwave function. First of all, I think it looks quite stylish and modern with an expensive looking finish. The door pulls downwards to reveal a flatbed design inside-there is no turntable! This means you immediately get more cooking space inside, and this is particularly suitable if you have square plates or bowls, as a turntable might make it more restrictive when angular plate trying to rotate. I do find it kind of odd therefore that you get a circular wire rack and a circular baking tray supplied? Surely the whole point of the flat bed design is to provide a bigger cooking space inside, so by having a circular rack (presumably to raise food up so it is nearer to the grilling element ) means you effectively have less surface area-odd! Also the downside of having a drop-down door is it means there is less usable workable space immediately in front of the oven once the door is open.
The product is easy to use and the buttons are clearly marked so you could probably use this product straight out of the box without having to even read the instructions.
All the features you’d come to expect from a modern microwave are here: buttons to increase the time in either 10 minutes, one minute and 10 second increments, Clock, timer, defrost feature etc. There are also more than a dozen automatic settings for things like jacket potatoes, chicken, soup, pizza etc.
Of course none of this would matter if the product didn’t cook food well, so I guess the question is – does it? Yes, it does a fairly decent job. The lack of a turntable means you may have to open the door and physically rotate the food item, although it does a fairly good job most of the time of heating food evenly.
I do like this product, that’s not perfect (which microwave ever is? ) it comes pretty close. For me the large non rotating interior is a definite plus point, affording a larger cooking area with easy access via the drop down door – as long as you have plenty of worktop space.

    Stylish & modern.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs we are just a two person household, and bemoaned the fact after a house move four years ago that we disposed of our microwave, we decided that soaring energy prices could make this a worthwhile purchase. We’re mainly prepping food on the hob, freezing and then heating as appropriate in the microwave. We remember baked potatoes cooked perfectly in our old Sharp unit, but have yet to try out this one. We do like the fold flat door and the spacious easy clean interior. The lack of a rotating table is also a bonus as we have a lot of square/rectangular dishes. We find the grill facility very useful, but have not mastered the combination use of grill and microwave together. Hence our feeling that a recipe book might be useful addition to the printed instruction. Does it save electricity? I think it must do, as there’s no need to run it up to temperature for a start. Time will tell!

Seems to do the job quite well, a bit noisier compared with my old panasonic which was already loud. Flatbed is nice, the cooking trays are a bit cheap though, could do with a full width tray/shelf for baking and grilling especially as the walls have the ledges for one. The front exterior is nice brushed metal, with the sides painted steel, and interior is stainless. It’s a bit difficult to clean around the grill though. Doesn’t seem to let you add a minute or two to the timer without completely stopping and clearing it.

Previously, I had the other Sharp flat bed model, the R860 SLM 900 W, which started making peculiar clicking noises after 2 years, and Sharp have given me a 50% refund. This R861 is also a lovely user friendly oven but will this model, with the dropdown door, give longer service, like my original Sharp turntable model?

Good value for money but will it last?

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSharp’s R861SLM 900w combination flatbed microwave has a sleek appearance, premium quality feel, and is easy to use. We are a four-person family, and it fits all of our requirements. It’s a microwave that also functions as a grill and a convection oven. When we invite family and friends over for food, this, together with my regular oven and grill, comes in handy. More food is better. The size is perfect for us, and it can easily fit a large dish. It is quite deep, so make sure you have enough room and leave enough space around the microwave because it can be quite hot. Unlike most microwaves, which have a standard door opening, I like its drop down door for quickand easyaccess.Jacket potatoes, pizza, rice, oven chips, cake, and roast chicken are among the pre-installed auto menu options, which are a nice touch. I like to heat the old-fashioned method, even if technology is there to make things easier. The auto defrost preprogrammed option, which works by merely entering the weight of the food, is a fantastic function. Overall, a versatile microwave that is large, warms meals quickly and evenly, and is easy to clean.

I am very pleased with my combination microwave oven. It not only looks smart in our kitchen but it’s already made life much more convenient. Love the fact it’s flatbed not turntable. The microwave is easy to use and powerful and has dealt with everything we’ve thrown at it. The grill function does an excellent job, cooking quickly and evenly. The platter-free, stainless steel interior is easy to clean. It is bigger than normal microwave so be aware of that when you buy.

This microwave was delivered qucikly and in good quality packaging. It was delivered in a large box and weighs around 20kg so you might need someone to help you carry it. It is well packaged and easy to remove from the packaging as well.

It is quite big so you need quite a bit of space on the countertop, it is also very heavy so be careful when carrying it. It has a lot of room on the inside and you can fit a large chicken or a 10-inch pizza in there which is really good. It also works as an oven as well as a microwave which is good.

Since there is no tray on the inside it makes it a lot easier to clean which is good. There are many different options and the buttons allow you to choose what you want to cook depending on the picture that you choose.

You can adjust the time from minutes to seconds and also stop it at any time which is good. Also, you can set timers on it as well which is great. It cooks food and defrosts, warms up as well.

Overall, an amazing microwave oven works fantastically and is really easy to use. Highly recommended!

I quite like this microwave. When it arrived it did have a few faint scratches on the top which is slightly annoying but they honestly weren’t bad enough for me to complain or sent the product back, after placing the microwave I couldn’t see them anyway so this doesn’t bother me at all.
I like the fact it has no turn table it makes it easier to just wipe any spills when needed which saves time cleaning it.
The instructions are pretty basic. You get the jist of how to use the machine okay. It does have a mention of a popcorn setting but no instructions on how to find and use that popcorn setting.
I mainly use the microwave setting. I tried to use the convection setting once but after realising it was going to take 30 minutes to pre heat before I could actually cook the food I cancelled and just used my oven as it would of taken less time to pre heat.
The door opening downwards does take a little time to get used to but overall I do like this product.

EDIT TO ADD: I was completely wrong about the convection setting, it doesn’t take 30 minutes to pre heat, it just counts DOWN from 30 minutes 200 Celsius is the hottest setting and it takes roughly 4 minutes to pre heat. After this time it just stops the countdown and beeps at you until you open the door to put your food in. After this the display resets and you can input the time you want it to cook for. I now use this setting regularly for pizza night as my oven doesn’t fit two pizzas, chicken nuggets and chips! It cooks the pizza thoroughly..even better than my actual oven in all honesty.

    Really recommend this product.

This product comes in a huge box, well packaged with simple, easily understood instructions. It is a standard size and not too heavy, and sits easily on my worktop. It looks incredibly stylish, and the pull down front is a great innovation, as is the handle.
As a microwave- which is how I will use it mostly- it is very simple to use, and the flat bottom means it is easy to clean and much more spacious than the old style. I was worried it wouldn’t cook as evenly, as it doesn’t rotate, but my food is cooked thoroughly, in fact, quicker than my previous one! There are incremental heating choices too, if you don’t want to cook on full power. A few reviews report that it is loud whilst running, and it is maybe a fraction louder than my previous one, but not alarmingly so.
I didn’t expect to use the grill function as often as I do, but it is great for pizzas and quiches etc, and there are simple guidelines for cooking within the instruction booklet. I am very happy with this oven and recommend it highly .

This combination flatbed micowave with the dimensions of 49.7×50.4×30.3cm is bigger than my old one, which was very small and basic, however it fits nicely onto the allotted kitchen surface and does not take up too much space.
To be honest, it is quite sophisticated for my very rudimentary needs-I only use a microwave for cooking rice, warming up left-overs,and throwing together a quick scrambled egg and I would only use the defrost facility in an emergency. I have cooked frozen baked potatoes in it (4 potatoes 80% for 9mins) and they came out evenly and perfectedly cooked.
It is easy to clean, I like the pull-down door and flatbed features, and the black and silver matches my toaster and kettle.
The clock is easy to set, although it did take a few attempts, and the instructions are quite clear and helpful.
Good, solid microwave, and hopefully, I’ll have no problems with it.

This is a good combi microwave which has a drop down door so it useful for smaller spaces. It heats well – I have only just it on microwave mode so far but am happy with it. It is slightly on the noisy side to operate but that’s a small thing. Good value and so far works well.

I have a small flat so space is generally at a premium, but its very useful to have a combination product like this then a microwave alone. I will start with where the flaws are, mainly its the instructions being so so to be perfectly honest then the product itself. Once you actually get going with it and just mess around with the functions it becomes pretty obvious quickly as to how you will use it.

In terms of microwave its okay, does a passable job. If you have a large family that microwaves alot, you may want a dedicated and large capacity microwave. While I see this is a 900w Microwave function, I find in actual use its comparable to about 600w-700w microwave this replaces if I had to guess. In part because it has no turn table. Microwaves function best with turn tables due to the way the waves work in heating the food, by having a turning table it helps to cook the food more evenly, as its missing here, its why I think it needs a longer time to cook to hit those cold spots.

Now in terms of oven, its actually pretty nice. Find that its actually not small, but not as massive as most ovens, so you can hit that sweet spot in terms of cooking mid size dish’s without needing a massive oven to be heated up. Has made heating up that pizza a breeze and it does really cook well. I have cooked a loaf of bread and that also has worked well.

In all its a nice product but not perfect, mostly due to the instructions and microwave mode not being perfect. The oven mode however is ideal and no issues there. At time of writing the price of 140 is reasonable.

I found the Sharp Combination oven really good to use and it’s very good on the eye too. If fits into most kitchens. It has a good capacity for most average families. I found that all the functions are all really easy to use. If I’m just cooking something for myself and my partner I might just use the oven on this rather than the larger electric oven. The grill is perfect to crisp up your meals after you have a microwave then. The microwave is 900 W and cooks fast and evenly.

Instead of the door opening sideways it opens down like any other regular oven which is great in my galley Kitchen as it stops it banging into the wall. Colour way is black, silver and stainless steel.
I haven’t had it for very long and I can only speak how I find and I really like it. Perhaps it’s a little bit too big for my kitchen but because you can use it for three different cooking ways I think it’s marvellous

I have had a DeLonghi combination microwave oven for a lot of years and it has been very good, and still works perfectly well. The Sharp R861SLM gave me a good opportunity to replace mine with a more up to date, and hopefully more energy efficient model.

The overall size of the Sharp is fairly large 49.7 cm (front to back) x 50.4 cm (wide) x 30.3 cm (high) but to be fair, my existing one is also quite large (but 10cm less from front to back). Much of the additional 10cm is the fan at the back of the oven, the main part of that depth is in the centre and ours is tucked into a corner so the appearance from the front is that it is the same size.

In the past I have rarely used the grill and convection oven, so I expect it will be similar with this one, although the flat bed does make it more practical, albeit a little hard to get used to. Primarily it will be microwave use and at 900 watt, this is more powerful than mine.

So far, I have found this fairly easy and intuitive to use, the manual covers most of what you need, albeit a little concise; to be fair, these days getting a manual in paper form at all is quite a treat.

So far I have found that defrosting seems to be about on par with my old 850 watt, but cooking was definitely quicker. I always stir things half way through cooking, so I did the same with this; I rotated the bowl too, and my breakfast porridge was cooked in a minute and a half instead of the two it normally takes.

So far, the touch screen has been pretty good, and for the best part functions on the microwave have seemed obvious without the manual use.

As for the noise, I don’t find it terrible, it is about on par with my old one, so I don’t know if combination microwave ovens make more noise than straight microwave ones.

I do love the fact that the door comes down like a regular oven, as it prevents banging the door on to things on the counter top, either way you still need to be careful.

All in all, this seems a feature rich combination oven, it seems to work well, although I cannot attest to its longevity as I have only had it a short period of time. It looks good on the side, and at around 165 it seems to be reasonable value for money and within the ball park of other models.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a very large solid oven – it looks and feels like a microwave and to be honest as a microwave it’s excellent – without reading the instructions it’s simple ti set power time and start!

It is very heavy but very stable with a solid build quality and suction feet so will stick form to the worktop.

It’s a microwave and grill and convection oven all in one – basically like a combo but I think it serves first a foremost as an excellent t microwave
It can warm food and cook food too.
It doesn’t have a turntable – but instead a flat ceramic type floor plate – making it easy to clean and allowing larger items to be inserted

Have to leave it for 30 mins to heat up if wanting to use as an oven and you can make more or less anything you can do with an oven

Quality is great – easy to use – power is good and size is very good

The door opening mechanism is also excellent and surprised hasn’t been done much before

For the price it’s a bargain.

Sure you’ll get more satisfaction from a gas oven when baking but if you want an all in one with lower energy use this is worth i

This microwave is great and I have not used my electric oven since I bought it. I haven’t noticed any increase in my electricity use and I am using this to cook all kinds of meals now. I have had a smaller grill/convention oven/microwave in the past and never made real use of it. I have also bought new pyrex cake dishes and trays to use and amy really pleased with my purchases. My only complaint is sometimes I need to bake cakes for an extra few minutes.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersI bought a combi microwave (Panasonic) over 30 years ago and used it for c.20 years before passing it to my son. No grill. Metal turntable and ceramic honeycomb insulation pad so you could use metal “tins” in combi mode. The instructions were excellent with examples for using combi to save time – probably because they were so new.
We have recently moved. The kitchen is small and I wanted to replace a small microwave and tabletop oven with one appliance. I didn’t want to spend too much for something that may, or may not, work in the way I want. This was therefore a bit of a compromise and the flatbed was interesting – other makes of this type were above what I was willing to pay.
I wouldn’t call the Sharp R861 a true combi – in convection mode it just blows the hot air from the grill around. The flatbed seems odd but I hope no turntable will be a benefit. The instructions are poor – no help with the combi modes at all.
Got it yesterday and tried the microwave mode for heating milk for coffee – slower by 10 seconds or so than our 700w microwave, probably because no turntable and a bigger space.
Made a batch of cheese scones in convection mode 180c. Should have used 170c and pre-heated – forgot it was fan but they took about 18 minutes and were fine. I’ll know next time.
Today I roasted a chicken. The preset for this uses convection only but my old combi had instructions for using microwave/convection to save time so I guessed that this should work. A 1.6kg chicken bottom up in a ceramic dish on the flatbed at a “micro+convection” 170c for 20 minutes. Turn the chicken breast up and repeat 170c for 20 more minutes. Worked very well. Much quicker than a conventional oven with the same result. This method should work in a turntable combi if you have room for the dish/chicken to turn. Why do the manufacturers not promote this more? Why does nobody suggest this method when you search online?
The flatbed seems to be ceramic so I may be able to use “tins” in combi mode so long as they are well away from the walls as you could with my old combi. Something for me to consider but I would rather not break it yet. This is not a recommendation, try at your own risk.
Just tried a poppadom in the centre of the flatbed. 30 seconds “Quick Start” full microwave, turn over and repeat. Again a slower cook than my old 700w microwave but an excellent (better) result.
The grill seems to be hotter at the back so some turning round when grilling is needed but that’s often the case.
I bought from Argos as it was the cheapest (149.99) I could find nearby and I had Nectar points to use. At the price, so far, this seems to be a good buy. I think I paid around 300 in the 1980s.
    Addendum – 2 days later.
I had 2 small cooked savoury pastries in the freezer. I put them frozen in a metal 6″ loose bottom flan tin on the flatbed of the microwave. Set on combination mode micro+convection 170c for 10 minutes. There was no arcing so I assume this mode will be safe for other metal tins (see my comment above re combi mode). The pastries were hot right through and had slight additional browning, but a little drier inside than I expected. Perhaps a minute less at this setting or 200c which uses less microwave power. More experiment needed but this appliance (and others like it) are far more versatile than the manufacturers are telling. It comes with a metal “baking tray” but has no mention of it in the instructions – a missed opportunity in my opinion. Time to try combi cakes and pies!

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersI’m very happy with this microwave oven. It looks good, and works well. I have baked bread in it, which came out fine at 200C. The instruction book is not helpful, and it is difficult to know how to use the combination of oven and microwave. So I tried all the different presets for 100 seconds each and discovered the following: 200C has 30% micro power; 170C has 45% micro power; 140C has 60% micro power; 110C has 75% micro power. In the 100 seconds, it switched between heat to micro approx. 5 times. I’m not sure how useful this is to anyone else, but for me in experimenting with baking, it gives me some idea of the power level, and used along with a microwave cookbook or website may save time! Eventually… Overall very good value for money.
