First thing to do is throw the crap wrenches away and use a ratchet and crescent wrench or two crescent wrenches. You will never get the handle together with those supplied. Twisted tines are great and I am able to remove my less than lush

It works great / I wish the twist tines were a little more open so would go over plant trying to remove a lot easier but it does a great job once I get it over the plant – and grassburs are a mess to get rid of – but works grea

I was pretty skeptical when I ordered this tool but have a flowerbed that you simply cant get a tiller or shovel easily into. So what the heck, I thought I would give it a try. It works great! Don’t force it and you will be very pleased at how easy it is to use. Digs well, and even in dry hard soil works well.

Able to go down deep and dig up even bush roots. Easy for a Senior Female to operate. During assembly was not able to get the nuts and bolts to flush completely, but this did not hamper the effectiveness & ease of operating the tiller.

Love this yard tool! This is a great solid tool for an amazing price. I compared it to one I saw at Lowes for almost twice the price that wasn’t as solid and had plastic parts. This tool is all metal with good hand grips. It works as described and with little effort I was able to loosen up dirt in my yard that was like concrete when I tried previously with a rake or shovel. It is easy to use and gets the job done.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI needed to cut through my backyard lawn in order to create level plots for our 7 vegetable beds and a wildflower garden. One review mentioned she was able to cut through her grass efficiently and she was older. So, I figured I would try this before I rented a tiller or turf cutter. I would need one after cutting the sod anyway to mix up my soil, peat moss and perlite. This tool is amazing. It twisted through the grass layer easily. The first few twists take a little elbow grease to get going but then once you get going, chunks of turf are easier and easier to remove as you work your way around. Digging up the 7 plots was easy. Laying and leveling the cement blocks was another story.

I also want to mention for another garden project, I did rent a tiller thinking it would make faster work for a much larger area. It was kind of a mistake. The vibration from the tiller left my body in pieces for several days. I was in a lot of pain and it ended up taking several days anyway because after one day, I needed 2 to rest. In the end, I figure this twist tiller would have done the job just as good, in the same amount of overall time and my back and arms would not have been in pain. Just a thought for anyone one the fence.

The tool is rugged enough into my second gardening season. I highly recommend it and when you find yourself only needing to loosen up soil, it is a breeze by comparison.

I live in the desert so our dirt turns to super hard clay. I decided to plant a garden and add fresh dirt to the rock hard clay. This broke up the clay like it was nothing and I am not a strong person. It mixed the fresh dirt in really well. So far my results are 8 spinach plants, 8 green bean stalks and a cucumber plant just sprouted. If I hadn’t used this I would still be out there digging through the clay a month later.
I was worried about possible shoulder and back pain that a lot of people warned me about with hand tills but I didn’t have any! And I am a person with a neurological disorder so pain can happen from opening a soda can or a bottle cap.

We were not too sure about this tool when we ordered it. However, it is best tool for the garden EVER! As we both have age related problems with bending and strength and we had a large patch of grass to dig up, it was brilliant for twisting up the roots. We did kill the grass off first with roundup which made it a bit easier as where there were small patches of grass that were not dead it was a bit tougher. Highly recommend.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis was easy to put together but may need tightening occasionally. I weeded my wintered over raised bed. I know most people just shove these into the ground and twist. Due to a shoulder issue, that’s less an option for me. There’s a tiny bit of more level top I can push down on with my foot but I could use a little bit bigger area.

Having said that, it’s nicely sturdy. The tines are coated and sharp points. It goes together easily. The handles are padded enough to help with grip and, for me, wide enough to help me get some good angle on.

So, as far as me, it’s a 4 star.

The wrenches that come with this tiller (simply tossed loose in the box) fit only loosely on the nuts and bolts, making it much harder to assemble the tiller than it needs to be. It’s almost impossible to use the wrenches to hold the nuts or bolts and screw them on; I gave up and dug out some real tools.

The tiller is fairly large and as such works well with large areas or to uproot large weeds, but if you have visions of using it to remove something like dandelions, say, it’s much too large and aggressive for that. Also, the tines are quite thick and don’t cut roots but rather entangle and wrench them out of the ground, so it would be very hard break up something like grass roots to till a new garden plot, for example. The description also mentions using it for a lawn aerator, but it’s really not designed for that since aerating a lawn doesn’t involve digging up big chunks. I guess you could just walk around and poke holes in the lawn with it, but that would be a very tedious way to do this chore.

Within its limitations, though, it works pretty well. I’m 5 feet 8 inches tall and it’s a good height for me, but it might be awkward for someone who’s much taller.

Worked well to help me break up the soil and remove some weeds in my front beds. The only thing is that the two cheap disposable wrenches they include for assembly purposes were not at all the same size as the included nuts and bolts. Now I have my own wrenches and sockets so I was fine, but tbh I don’t even know why companies do this. It seems so wasteful. Just tell me the tools I’ll need to assemble it in the description, don’t send me useless garbage.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo this works as it should. The tools included for assembly don’t quite work. The two “wrenches” that were included for assembly, the side for the larger nut was too large so it just slipped off of it. The nuts have rubber in them making them extremely hard to screw on. On top of that once you’re done with assembly you have two large bolts sticking out of the side because the bolts are too long. It’s still functional. I was able to till up an area of grass for a flower bed. You have to put in some muscle while using. Overall a good tool to have if you can’t afford an electric tiller.

I got this to use in my home garden and didn’t really know what to expect. It came in 3 pcs with all needed hardware. Its a straight forward assemble , it even includes a couple of wrenches. I had seen these but not used one. This year I decided to try me a small garden in my back yard. This thing is a straight beast in breaking up soil/ lawn. I was shocked at how easy it bit into the ground. I prepped a 6×10 plot that had been lawn for years and this was tons easier that trying to use a mattock/pick/hoe. Now it is a little bit of work but don’t be a wuss and boohoo how you have to twist and pry, wahwah . Super impressed with how this worked and what it can do !

Never used a tiller before… My boyfriend and I decided to tackle the SC red clay soil with this tiller and a shovel. We were able to dig and loosen the soil and dug up 2 holes in about 30 minutes. Each hole was about 2 ft in diameter and 1 ft deep, which was enough for our purpose.

The assembly was super simple, all the pieces and tools were included to put it together, took me maybe 5 minutes. I had doubts about the sturdiness because this is not one continuous post, but I had no problem using it as it is a continuous post, just a little wiggling, that’s all. The post is hallow, which is much lighter to use and carry too. In my opinion, Overall, this tiller is pretty solid and sturdy.

The red clay was a tough job, but mainly I’ll be using it for my garden beds. If this was able to tackle complete clay soil, I have no doubt that it’ll perform smoothly in my garden bed.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAbout two months ago, I was offered a free Walensee Twist Tiller for review via the Amazon Vine Program, and I accepted.

So I have a small vegetable garden in the backyard. Thanks to the sunny but cool, windy weather, I decided to till it today. I opened the box to find the tiller in the expected three sections. I thought the quality and the thickness of the metal was very good. The tiller handles have foam grips.

I assembled the tiller in under ten minutes. It’s easy. There are the three sections, two bolts, two nuts and four washers. The tiller includes the tools necessary for assembly, which are two small closed end wrenches, though you could also use your own wrenches or ratchet drivers. So you tighten those two nuts up good and you have a very solid piece of steel to work with. I removed the small plastic protectors on the tine tips and off to the garden I went.

The action is very good with this. You twist it to the right with downward pressure and the steel tines dig into the soil very well… almost like a screw. Depending on the condition of the soil, it may either just break it up or you may pull up a chunk of soil which you can just usually shake out. Repeating this action as you move around your plot will break up and till the soil very well. I was able to get down at least eight to ten inches, and had my whole vegetable garden plot done in probably about half an hour to 45 minutes – and that included a few passes to really break it up.

It’s definitely a workout for your arms and your back to a lesser extent. I think this twist action is superior to typical tilling with a regular garden till or shovel. It was not only much faster but I feel that it was much more effective. You can see in the photo my freshly tilled vegetable garden plot. There was a pair of robins hanging around that were dying to get in there to see what worms they could find.

    A few notes…

After tilling my garden, the grey paint around the tines is largely gone. Which means it’s now in my soil. This was not totally unexpected, but I’m still not particularly happy about that.

It’s easier to use this twist tiller if you have a little extra height over the ground that you’re tilling… say three or four inches. That small bit of extra height allows you to lean into it and put more of your upper body force into the action with a little bit less effort. You could use a few boards to stand on. It’s not necessary, but it helps.

Overall, I think this tiller works great and I highly recommend it. I wish I had this years ago. It just makes tilling so much faster and more effective.

This worked great for my garde

My wife is the gardener, but when it comes to heavy digging, i am elected. One of here gardens had become overgrown with Lobster Claw plants. They spread like mad and have a huge root system. I began trying to till the soil with this tool, but it could not twist through the entangled roots. Great tool, but the wrong job.

I switched to a gardening fork to dig up the roots. Once the roots were out of the way, this tool easily dug into the soil. Twisting it makes it dig itself deeper into the soil and then lifts and rotates the deeper soil, bringing the deeper soil to the top and distributing any fertilizer or organic mulch materials deeper into the soil.

Our garden soil (Tampa, Florida, USA) is composed of lots of sand and not as much harder packed soils. The tool easily worked the soil with not a whole lot of effort on my part. If working with hardpacked soils or areas covered with grass or dense weeds, this should probably not be the first tool you grab. You will need something to break up the harder things first, but then, this tiller is fantastic at mixing your soil and incorporating fertilizer or other soil enhancements.

This worked great for loosening up my ground beds, it’s really easy to use, just twist and lift. I use a rototiller in my main garden but my ground beds up by the house are too small for my big tiller so this is perfect for making it ready to plant. If you live where there is clay soil like here in north Ga. You will need a real tiller to break up new ground, this didn’t work on hard unplanted ground but it’s excellent for breaking up existing beds that you want to replant or add compost to, it loosens great and turns the compost in nicely. This was just what I needed to make ready my planting beds. It’s sturdy too and a snap to assemble. Very nice tool. Recommend

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is easy to assemble, fairly sturdy, appealing to the eyes, and of a good price. However, I’m not so sure if this is how a tiller should work. I’m in pacific NW with a lot of rain and when I use this it just grabs a ball of dirt and I’m not really getting much “tilling” done…whatever it means to get the bed ready for new crops. It looks and does what it’s designed to do, just not the effect that I want. Attached is a comparison of this and my very old manual tiller. Compared to my old one, it digs deeper and grabs a huge chunk of soil, but doesn’t “destroy” the grass or “scrapes” the grass as much.

I got this so my wife and I could start on our garden in the backyard. The tiller is very sturdy and appears well made. I had a little trouble getting the bolts to tighten when I assembled it using the included wrenches. I had to grab a socket out of my tool chest to assist in tightening things up, as the tiny wrenches just didn’t have the torqueing power. Other than that I have no complaints with how the twist tiller works or looks.

This arrived while my son was visiting and he opened the box and was impressed right away with the quality. My husband put it together in about 5 minutes. It comes with 2 wrenches for the job and instructions. It’s impressive and looks like a serious tool for the garden. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet, but my husband did and he said it worked well. He said besides tilling, it would also be useful for digging a hole in the ground to transplant something. Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am pleased to report this tiller does exactly as promised. I am especially pleased that it pulls the weeds up by the roots if need be. You can actually use your foot to push the claw deeper into the ground for deep roots. You’ll just need a little more elbow grease to twist and pull up on the handles as you pull out the weed. This tiller is a great tool for weeding and aerating the soil. It’s sturdy enough that I expect it will last many seasons to come.

You can actually use your foot to push the claw deeper into the ground for deep roots. You'll just need a little more elbow grease to twist and pull up on the handles as you pull out the weed. This tiller is a great tool for weeding and aerating the soil. It's sturdy enough that I expect it will last many seasons to come.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIt went together fairly messy. I chose to use my husbands tools instead of the provided tools, though I am sure they would have gotten the job done. Was able to quickly till my 8′ x 8′ dirt patch within 15 minutes. I wish it was a bit taller or had an adjustable height for the handle. Otherwise great tool!

Exceeds expectations! This is a great, high quality, well made hand tiller. It comes with everything needed to put it together and it only takes a minute or two. It has a nice grip handle. It is a well made product and should last for several years. I highly recommend!

This comes in three pieces so is quick and easy to assemble in a few minutes. It feels very solid and sturdy once assembled. In previous years, I’ve used a hoe and shovel to refresh my raised beds, which was very labor intensive and felt like a days work however long it took, but I was able to quickly and almost effortlessly refresh my flowerbed using this tiller. I just drop and twist, drop and twist, and repeat until finished. My soil looked like fresh, new, fluffy soil, and I had my new flowers planted within 30 minutes, and I could’ve done it in 20 minutes, but it was so easy to till I decided to be thorough.

I’m 5’2″ and working in raised beds, so I don’t feel any strain from bending because it’s more than three feet long. It feels solid but not heavy. The handles are thick but easy to grip and turn.

That thing really works well. So much easier than a hoe or spade. Easy to work around exciting plants. Dogs nice n deep.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThere were no reviews of this when I bought it, so I was a little concerned about the strength of the tines on it.
Thankfully, they are extremely sturdy, and I had no problems with them bending or giving at all in tough soil.

It arrived in a sturdy box, the tines had material covers to help protect accidental pokes, and it assembled in no time with two included screws, washers, and nuts.
They even included two wrenches in case you don’t have your own.
If you do have your own, you’ll probably want to use them, as the free ones included aren’t very wide and are uncomfortable to use.

I’m very glad I got this brand. I’m sure I will get many years of use out if it.

    Great quality tille

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersI’ve owned, and broken, two different Garden Claws that were the original and work on the same principle, and I was expecting a similar result with this Twist Tiller. But my last one was long gone, so I decided to go on and get this to review. Boy, was I surprised. First of all, it’s a lot more solidly built, in all respects, than a Garden Claw. It comes with strong nuts and bolts (and the wrenches to tighten them, which you’ll need) to screw the handle and the working end to the center post. Once tightened, I don’t think these bolts are going to come undone. The whole length of the tool is heavy duty, so I expect many years of use out of it.

What really shocked me was how easily the tines cut into my Georgia red clay, allowing me to break it up quickly without requiring a huge amount of muscle. I’m a little old lady, 4’11”, and the handles before the tines are stuck into the ground come up to about two inches below the band of my bra. The Garden Claw design has forked-tongue tine ends (for lack of a better way to describe it, more like triangle-tongued), and this Twist Tiller’s tines are straight and smooth like a nail…but bigger, of course. They just slip right into the soil (at least they did in the moist clay I tried it on) without much effort at all. Then it’s just a matter of lifting up, and the whole thing aerates and lifts up. I mean, wow. The exaggerated swirl of the tines works a whole heck of a lot better than the straighter swirl of the Garden Claw.

If you’ll compare the Twist Tiller to the regular shovel in my photos, you’ll get a good idea of its size. I’m in love with this thing. And it’s here just in time for spring planting, which will be happening for us in Zone 8a toward the end of March. Suddenly, the idea of breaking ground for new garden beds is not so daunting.

A Garden Claw user, this one surprised me
