Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHaving recently purchased a pair of these radios, I must say that I’m quite impressed. First, they fit perfectly in the hand and area a doddle to operate. Second, reprogramming them to the licence-free Pmr446 frequencies on the computer – via the dedicated cable and free software from Retevis – was also a doddle, although I’ve left the TX power set to 10w.
Although I’ve yet to test the range, I’ve tried them at close proximity, and, up to now, the sound quality appears to be excellent.
As for charging, using an iPhone charger, the radios didn’t take long at all, but I’ve yet to test battery stamina too.
Anyway, the units are solid and will surely withstand a drop test, they fit snugly into the charging cradles and, thus far, are just what we need for our camping trips.
Even though some say the belt clip is difficult to fit, it’s not that bad. All you need is a small screwdriver and a bit of patience. However, I can’t decide whether I actually need the belt clips or not, as it makes the radios less comfortable in one’s hand.
And so, my conclusion is that these radios are well worth the price. Once I’ve tested them properly, I’ll let you know the outcome.

I ordered these to keep for the inevitable SHTF situation that we’re long overdue in the western world. Like most radios imported from China, the default channels don’t align with our legal PMR frequencies, and the radios exceed the UK’s power limit of 0.5w (these are 10w) but realistically, who’s going to enforce this when it’s every man for himself?! Anyway, I tested a pair of RB85’s tonight in a standard British suburban area at varying stages, with assorted obstacles and interference increasing every step of the way. My partner sat in the house in the living room and I just went out walking! I began to lose transmissions at 0.9 miles, by which time I’d crossed a river, two fields, two railway lines, hundreds of houses, a church and an enormous Tesco Express next to a 4G phone mast. Needless to say, I was VERY impressed! Transmission clarity started out at 10/10 and decreased to a 5/10 at the furthest point. YouTubers seem to give it the big ‘un suggesting these radios will transmit for anywhere between 3-10 miles… Perhaps in open, flat land within line of sight of one another. For a realistic, standard urban test, this performance blew me away – I haven’t seen anything that will touch this, but then again given their power level, perhaps that’s not surprising. It’s just a shame the batteries aren’t interchangeable with AA’s for real emergencies and increased longevity. Otherwise, these are well worth the price!

Excellent radios. Once programmed to legal frequencies. Excellent transmit and receive audio.
Base chargers are OK and easy to drop the radios into them. Don’t stand in the holder unless charging if you stand it towards the front it is extremely unstable and will fall out at the slightest knock.Download the programming software or use the latest version of Chirp. I think the Retevis software is better.
Standard Baofeng type interface lead works very well.

Power output measured as per specification.

    Only two letdowns
1 Appalling instruction manual poorly written and tells you nothing that’s of any use.
2 Belt clip is a pain in the rear to fit onto the radio, but once fitted it’s very good.

In my opinion overall excellent value for money. The five stars are for its performance.
