A friend recommended these skimmer socks. They fit inside the skimmer basket and trap all of the small debris that would otherwise pass through to the pool filter. In a short space of time they can change colour, in our case usually to green, largely pollen, but p[possibly some dead algae. Quick rinse and they are ready to go again. One pair has kept our pool clean from June to beginning of September. Highly recommend giving them a try.
