This is the best thing I’ve bought in years. The socks are tough and very comfortable, if a little tight on the calves. I’m a size 8 or 8.5 (UK) and they’re a good fit. There’s a little extra room in the foot length but not much – they’ll fit a size 9, maybe 10, but anything above that they’re going to be a bit small. The heating element in the sole is all but undetectable by touch – you don’t feel like you’re walking around on a grill.

In terms of heating, there are four settings. 1 doesn’t seem to do much. 2 you don’t really feel, but then you don’t feel the cold either. If you’re either active or sitting about watching TV with a blanket over your feet, 2 is probably sufficient. 3 is nice and warm and 4 is probably too much unless you’re hiking to the south pole.

Battery life is better than I expected after reading some other reviews. Don’t take too much notice of how many battery level lights are still lit after n hours; it’s not very accurate. The first goes out quite quickly, second and third after maybe a couple of hours each but it’ll run a good long time on the last light. I typically put these on heat setting 3 for half an hour then turn down to 2. This way they last a good 8 hours. If you buy two pairs, you have a spare pair of batteries and you’re good for the day.

Couldn’t be simpler to use – there’s a single button on the battery, short press cycles through heat settings, long press turns them off. There’s a nice tactile click to it and it feels like a decent quality switch which won’t break after a couple of weeks. The batteries fit nicely into little pockets at the top of the socks. They have rounded edges and you don’t feel them digging into or pressing against your legs or anything.

They come with a V-shaped USB cable for charging – a single USB A plugs into your computer (or power bank, mains adaptor plug with USB, etc), and two short (about a foot) cables come off that with USB C to plug into the batteries. Charging from empty takes about 4 or 5 hours – easily quick enough to be able to charge one pair of batteries while using another pair. A desktop computer’s USB provides sufficient power to charge them, although personally I’m more comfortable charging such devices from a mains adaptor with USB. Charging from a laptop I haven’t tried, although should be just as capable if operating on mains power. You can leave them charging overnight and they just stop and go cold when fully charged.

The one thing I worry about with these is that when pulling them on, you can’t help but feel like you’re pulling and stretching the cable that runs from the heating element in the sole to the pocket at the top. It seems to be very securely sewn into the material of the sock, but I suppose time will tell.

Curiously, there’s a leaflet in the box which says hand wash only, although on the box it says machine washable in a net bag (not provided, although you probably already have some for washing delicates and if not there are plenty on Amazon for next to nothing). They’ve been through my washing machine a couple of times in a net bag and on 30C with no ill effects. Just tuck the cable & plug into the pocket, and remove the battery obviously. Probably a good idea to dry the plug thoroughly with a tea-towel as soon as they come out.

So overall, top marks. I always have my doubts when buying anything on Amazon these days, especially electricals, where there seem to be a thousand slight variations offered by companies named by somebody with an apparent fetish for meaningless six-letter acronyms. So far, though, very happy with these. Recommended.
