Attract A Variety Of Insects To Your Garden

The UK has a wide variety of insects and they need your help. A lot of the insect populations are in decline with constant building on land that homed them. They are happy to move to pastures new but they need a source of food and a place to stay safe. Having even a small area of flowers in your garden or balcony will help to attract many insects of a wide variety to your outdoor space. Having insects is good for pollenating plants but it also encourages birds and other wildlife to your garden.

A perfect Bee/Bug/Insect home which appears to have gone a storm with the insect kingdom, its comes with a hanging fixture which isn’t safe enough for the Cornish weather, so I securely fixed to the trellis in the courtyard among the wildflowers, were it is a hive of activity. Its good quality, well made addition to the courtyard. Quick delivery, well packaged and a seamless transaction.

I get bees in my garden regular as I plant alot of wild.flowers to attract the bees.
I ordered This bee house to replace my old one that I have had for quite a few years now.
This ne one seems alot better quality its strong and feels quite heavy.
It’s a natural wood had no paint or anything on.
I havnt put it up yet as its the rong time of year getting colder so I am storing it to put up next year.
It comes with a cleaning brush and comes apart so you can get it ready for the next year
Hopefully will last a long time and attract alot of bees.

    Ready for next yea

My kids and I loved hanging this on our garden fence in the corner next to a massive buddleia.

We cannot wait to see if we get any leaf cutter bees who decide to use this as their home. The item is very good quality and well made and perfect for using in your garden. Highly recommend and could easily make a wonderful gif

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is the 2nd bee / insect hotel that I have tried and reviewed, this one differs from the other in that the holes are a more uniform size so are probably aimed at specific ‘residents’ – solitary bees in this case. The hotel comes apart quite easily which will make it easier to clean come the Autumn when I take it down and store it away.

This hotel doesn’t look as if it’s been treated with any wood preservatives which is good, that gives more chance of insects setting up home. I’m a bit concerned about the bare wood roof so I may put a section of shed roofing felt on, just to give it more chance of lasting longer.

I absolutely love this wildlife house!

Looks great and actually works. Easy to set up and the animals love it – especially bees

Good price too, would recommend for any garden love

Very well made bee hive. It’s super cute and looks great on my fence. Can’t wait to see if any bees start using it.

Well made and gives good instructions for placing it. The metal rood protects it from the elements which is required in the west coast. Just waiting on my first residents moving in.

This is very sturdy and well-made.
It’s great that you can clean this out and it really makes for an attractive addition to the garden (It’s also a brilliant way to do your part)
Would have been nice to have different sized holes in it, but overall for the low price, this is a fabulous buy.

    A good-quality bee hotel

    As described and as advertised.

Well packaged and presented — this would make a lovely gift for gardeners looking for a little help with the pollinators or for general wildlife enthusiasts.

The beehive/bee house is well made in a relatively simple design. The only very slight negative we have is that the little copper plate attached to the centre of the roof is a little rough and ready, this bit definitely looks handmade.

Simple to use, easy to hang, good instructions on the back of the box in terms of where to put it, put an easy-to-use hanging clip on the back that is strong enough to hold the hive’s weight without issue.

A nice little cleaning brush is provided. This means you can clean out each of the nesting channels quickly and easily after use.

We think this would’ve been a better gift if it included a little bit more information about bees. This could’ve been links via QR code to websites with general information, how to identify different species, how to tell if the larvae have hatched, et cetera.

Also including a small packet of wildflower seeds would’ve made this even better — Especially if the seeds were for flowers known to be potentially attractive to bees.

Good all-round nice gift idea but we can’t comment on longevity yet we’ll have to how this weathers.

This seems like a decent quality bee hotel for the price, seeing what you can pay elsewhere. Comes assembled but you can take apart by unscrewing the wingnuts on the bottom to separate the layers for cleaning. There is a cleaning brush included which you can just stick in the holes but it does seem to get stuck requiring you to take it apart to get it out again, so you may as well just do that anyway. There is a hook on the back for hanging onto a screw or nail – it needs to be located in a warm sunny spot with food sources not too far away.

I feel that the instructions lack a little – in particular there’s no information about exactly when during the year the bees will use this and when would be a good time to open it up for cleaning when it would be vacant – it simply mentions cleaning “at the end of season” – so when is that exactly? If solitary bees are using this to lay eggs then they will block the tunnel entrances, and so at least you can tell when the emerged adult bee has broken through and vacated, but if bees and other insects are just using it as a shelter, surely they could be using it all year round? Another good reason to not simply ram the brush into the tunnels I would have thought.

This is a great way to start encouraging solitary bees in your garden. We are lucky to have a south facing garden and I have seen many species, such as red mason bees and leaf cutter bees. Place is a sunny position, around 1.5metres off the ground and ideally near to some flowers, that way you will get the maximum amount of bee visitors. This bee hive is solidly made and robust, just tighten up the two wing nuts prior to installation. This can be taken apart and cleaned as soon as the bees have vacated, ready for the new generation of bees. This is important to discourage mites and other pests from bothering the bees. The only downside for me is that the whole roof is not covered in metal, I think this would have been preferable. Excellent quality for the price.

For the money this is great value. I put this on my fence next to my flowering hibiscus. The bees went in straight away.

Im so impressed I’m gonna buy a couple more to line the fence with.

    Well made

This is not only a handsome addition to my garden it looks to be designed in an ingenious way to provide many years of shelter for bees. I love the copper flashing on the roof of the hotel. This should stop water ingress and prevent any warping.
The wood looks great and I feel it will ages well and continue to be aesthetically pleasing.
This is a sturdy and well made construction that has clearly been built to last.
I think bees and insects will happily settle in soon.

Well designed & constructed using quality materials.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Users…with this 6 floor x 4 ‘room’ bee-hive shaped, bee-hotel in an unvarnished natural wood, from ‘Garden Locker’.

As the item is not wrapped inside, a note of cautioning on unboxing ~ the edges of the metal-type flashing across the apex is razor sharp to one side on the one I received due to not being flat where it is attached via 8 tiny ‘tacks’.

On my measure, the bee-hotel stands around 18 cm high x 17 cm wide (max) x 16 cm (max) front to back, overall…the latter 2 measurements due to the roof overhang.

Approximate ‘room’ size, 4 on each:

~ 10.5 cm long channels on the lower floors
~ 7 cm on the top level, due to the recessed back of the roof overhang.

The natural grain of the wood gives it a less uniform look and, as you might expect, there is the odd knot here & there.

It has a single, metal-type hanging hook on the back but ours is standing on a garden wall where bees are known to hang out, so to speak, although no apparent residents at the time of writing (in situ 2 weeks).
It is held together by 2 x good quality wing nuts on the base that unscrew when it is time for cleaning.

As shown in the current stock images above, it arrived complete with a little cleaning brush in a branded cardboard box with details on the back:

~ ‘BEE KIND TO THE BEES’

This includes advice on where to place your bee-hotel, which is 1.5 m off the ground.

    11 images attached

Hoping to create a bit of a buzz around here...

I already have a bee hotel in my garden, and this year the solitary bees and leaf cutter bees have been filling up the holes at a staggering pace, so I needed another bee hotel and this fits the bill perfectly.

i love the design, it’s really well made and easy to take apart from cleaning. I also like the fact that a cleaning brush is included to help with the maintenance of the bee hotel going forward. I’ve hung this bee hotel on a fence post which is very easy to do thanks to the hook. Cannot wait to see the bees start moving in!

A great gift for others or a treat for yourself as it is so great to watch the bees filling up the holes!

This little bee house will hopefully encourage more wildlife into my garden – living on a newbuild estate that’s still under construction comes with significantly fewer birds, bees and bugs than I’d like so I’m planting and building as much as I can to turn our garden into a haven for them all!
The construction of this bug hotel is solid. The copper strip is a great addition to help prevent water ingress.
The installation is very easy and I think I’ll be getting a few more to try and help more little creatures out!

Really good quality of manufacture and made from thick wood and a small central metal area to the roof. Arrived fully assembled with just the two underneath wing nuts needing tightening. Cannot tell if the bees are happy with it yet but the glut of ladybugs we are having certain appreciate it. I have been fortunate enough to try two bee/insect houses from the same company and they are both the same excellent quality. I have included a picture of them both together so you can choose which you prefer as they are both the same price at 14.99 each. Each of them also includes a small cleaning brush.

    Sturdy Quality & Decent Weigh

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought my first bee house for a Christmas present for my husband last year. He said he wanted one and I thought a) it would be a passing fad and b) I would not be interested at all. It is fair to say that I was totally wrong on both counts and we absolutely love it to the point of obsession (please don’t judge!) As with all obsessions, one is never enough so it was time to expand the bee property empire!

This is a nice little bee house in the style of a Swiss chalet for bees! It comes in a pretty box, making it an ideal present. It is sturdy and well made and you can either use it free standing or hang it using the hook at the back. I think it’s better to be hung up and it is best to be somewhere sunny and near to flowers that attract bees – ‘our’ bees like foxgloves. I like that this bee house can be taken apart so you can clean it and there is a cleaning brush provided.

I would say the only negative point would be that the holes are all the same size and if they were different you would get a wider variety of bees. Apart from that we are very pleased with this addition to the bee house portfolio!

This is nicely constructed and the first I’ve seen that can be dismantled as all I found a bottle brush does is push any bits of dirt , leaves etc further into the hole blocking it up. Its very simple to take this apart and brush it all off. I know I have leave cutter bees as they have left perfectly rounded cut marks in some of the leaves in my garden but without a bee home myself they maybe taking them to another house or somewhere natural in my garden.

The roof has a strip of copper to protect from water ingress and a single hanging hoop on the rear although mine wasn’t cantered it stayed level on the fence. This would make a nice gift for someone with a garden and should last longer than the cheaper bamboo cane ones as its easier to maintain.

Handy being able to take it apa

This is really cute and seems well built, with a little holes for the bees. It’s small but quite chunky, so ideal for a small space or garden. It’s cute for 14.99 but the finish is a bit scruffy – the metal across the top is dented and just not the finish I’d expect.

Cute but not the neatest finish

The last few bee homes I have had from Amazon I have marked down considerably because after reading up that the holes need to be a depth of 8 to 15 cm (Sussex Wildlife Trust) they needed modification as the holes were far too shallow. This bee home is far better design in many ways. The lower holes are 10 cm deep and the home can be disassembled via two wingnuts making it very easy to clean out. The round holes at the top are only 7 cm deep so I will drill these deeper but they are better than the previous home where they were only 3.5cm deep. Only downside of this one is that the roof has only a small metal strip covering the roof joint the other ones had a fully covered metal roof which gives better weather protection but overall I am far happier with this one than the others.

At last a bee home with holes that seem deep enough

I am a huge fan of bees (as we all should be considering how important they are to the planet!) so having as many of these around the garden as possible is very important. This is my third bug/bee “hotel” and I am really looking forward to welcoming some in for the rest of the summer. I have sited it against a fence about 4 feet (1.5m) off the ground near some lavender – so am hopeful that some little chaps will take up residence soon. It is really nicely made in solid wood and is pretty on the eye.

I have bees visiting my garden every year for my lavender. So I thought I’d help0 them out with a new house for them. It’s put up outside ready for them to move in.

It’s well made and should last years. Be looking after the bees for years to come.

Top quality well made wooden bee house.

    Gets 5-5. Totally recommended.

This is a solid construction of thick softwood held togeather with two threaded rods and wing nuts. The roof apex is covered by copper sheet. A small triangular clip is at the rear so that it can be hung on a screw. The layers of softwood are drilled for the bees, and a bottle brush is included to clean out the holes after the bee lavae have hatched, ready for next year. Mounting instructions are included. Easy to put together and fix to a fence at 1.5 metres above the ground.

This is a great introduction to bee and bug houses. The usual ones have bamboo, but this could encourage people to make their own and drill wood sections and logs. This was delivered at a good time courtesy of Vine, as both of our bee houses are full: mostly bees that seal the bamboo with mud, with a few that are sealed with leaf.

This wooden bee hotel is attractively made, with a natural finish and a design inspired by bee hives. The bee home is made almost entirely from wood, with a copper strip across the top of the roof to stop this from leaking.

I was surprised to find that the layers to this move about in the hand a bit, and it turns out that this is because they are separate pieces held together with long bolts, so this can be taken apart to clean it once it’s unoccupied.

There is a metal hanging loop on the back, which needs to go against a structure such as a wall or fence. This is a garden item, and the finish to the wood is a little rough in places.

I would have given this five stars, but on the insect hotel I received the copper strip has been really badly finished. It’s crumpled at one end (unsightly) and has been very roughly cut, making it sharp in places.

Attractive design, but copper strip on the top is badly cut and applied

  28. TeenaAtkin says:

With a south facing front garden, this solitary bee hive is perfect for us. What I hadn’t realised when I ordered it is just how well it’s constructed. The design resembles that of a full sized bee hive. On the top apex is a broad piece of copper so the rain shouldn’t permeate and it’s stunningly well made.

In the attractive branded box – this would make a perfect gift – is a small bottle brush to clean out the many holes at the end of the season ready for the new occupants. The different layers of wood will come apart once the two wing nuts at the base are unscrewed to enable leaves and other detritus to be swept out.

It could be free standing – and, made from natural wood, this is robust and a very good weight at 1.16kg – or it could be hung with the metal loop at the back. Ideally place it around plants at a distance of 1.5-1.8 metres off the ground.

In the past few weeks I’ve often said to my partner that we have what appeared to be a wasp in the house. Nine out of ten times he’s told me it’s not a wasp but a bee. There are a good many species of bee – he’s started to try to identify them from guides and if they do find their way indoors he sends them out via the ‘tumbler over a piece of card’ method.

As the listing indicates, of 270 species of bees in the UK the majority – just under 250 – are solitary bees. We live rurally, have a lot of bee and insect friendly plants in the garden and get very large numbers of bees through the summer.

Just outside the window as I write there are a dozen or more bees on a clump of Echinops, which they love. If you are considering this and aren’t too sure about what plants will attract bees, have a look online – there’s plenty of information out there. If your children or grandchildren have an interest in nature, they’ll love it when a bee hotel appears – and you can discover the natural world with them.

This solitary bee house/hotel is well made and beautifully crafted. It arrived presented so well in a lovely gift box making it ideal for gifting. We positioned ourselves on the fence close to the flowers that the bees seem to frequent the most. I love the idea that these lovely little creatures have somewhere they can go to rest. Until I started watching the bees in the garden I had no idea just how hard they work all day.

At under fifteen pounds this is a fantastic weatherproof and sturdy construction that I would say is absolutely terrific values for money and worthy of five stars. I absolutely love it.

This little solitary bee hive is very well made, easy to put together and looks lovely amongst the flowers, I’ve placed it 1.5 metres off the ground in between blue and purple flowers, apparently what bees see and prefer. Clear concise assembly instructions, you only have to tighten 2 wing nuts, then position it, it comes in a lovely box, would make a wonderful gift for any age, and compared to other items of the same product the price is good, and to be honest the quality is so good not sure how another item double the price could be any better. Came in perfect condition, on time.
