I’ve been looking at something like this for a while, but I felt like they were too expensive for what they actually were. This one was priced right, so I pulled the trigger. There is a small Woodstove in my wife’s office, that needs smaller pieces to work well, so it’s been great for that. It cuts kindling very nicely, has nice welds, and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. I have younger daughters, and I like that they can split kindling with a little sledge versus a sharp axe.

Perfect solid steel not cheap cast iron. . Made well. Look no further this is exactly what I was looking for.

We have a Solo Bonfire fire pit and this makes it super easy to create kindling to start our fires. IT works from whole logs to the smallest pieces. I’m talking down to pencil width pieces of wood. I use my 4lb sledge hammer with big pieces and a regular hammer for smaller pieces. It is very study and works as expected. I keep small, medium and large pieces of kindling in my solo stove. Having the wood already cut down makes it easier to get a good hot fire goingn spur of the moment. Once the fire is rolling, it doesn’t matter if I put wet wood on because it all burns. This is much safer and definitely easier than trying to split wood with a hatchet.

I use this product to produce kindling for use in my wood stove. It is robust and easy to use. I expect to use it for many years.

It actually works well. I got the bigger one and happy that I did. I give it two thumbs up.

Had a smaller diameter splitter. Occasionally I needed a wider opening for larger logs. Bought this for those larger logs works well.

This has been such a great tool. As long as the wood pieces are the right size and dry enough, it works great! Would recommend.

Suprised my hubby with this to take on our camping trips. This has saved his back from pain while splitting wood. Good height, quality metal and has been a life saver.

This one is rock solid. I bolted it onto a 1″ thick base. makes it more stable and catches most of the bark debris. Cover is a nice touch. Its better than others I have reviewed on youtube. Metal is thicker and top allows bigger pieces. There are hard woods that dont really lend themselves to splitting this way. It much safer than holding it while I do the hatchet trick!!!

Very useful and easy for splitting the unknotted portion of wood 6″ in diameter or less. Otherwise too much pounding with a hand sledge. Well built (welded) and steady on the ground without the need to mount it to a bade.

I saw someone on youtube recommended this product and this makes splitting wood SO easy! As long as the wood isn’t too big for it! I had a hard time splitting wood before I bought this but I have no problem at all! The price is so worth it! I definitely recommend this product!

Yeah if you never split wood in your life and you used this contraption then yeah I can see why some would have issue with this. Sometimes wood gets stuck at times but you can just ‘hammer’ it out then it’s all good. If you split wood before the old fashioned way and then you use this, it’s amazing. I love it and I don’t dread splitting wood now. Have fun!

So far I have no complaints on this, it does have holes on the bottom “feet” to bolt it down to something so it’s more stable unfortunately that then makes it immobile. It also comes with a cover to put over it.

Listen, if you want to split logs, get a log splitter. I use this to make kindlin from split hardwood. It’s a bit big, but very light weight and sturdy. I’m a small woman and heat my house with a wood stove. if my piece is too small to stand up on its own, i just give it a small tap to hold the log onto the blade and then WHAM! the wood is split! no mess, the pieces fall right out they don’t get stuck like the smaller versions. I’ve tried it with whole knotty hardwood as well, no issues. Even my daughter can use it, and she has no hand/eye coordination. For the price, it’s of great value! I can’t imagine splitting a ton of large hardwood logs in there, i’m sure it’s possible, but if you are looking to split cut wood into smaller pieces, get this. Works even better than expected. Sharp and sturdy.

Gave it as a gift to my husband for Christmas and he says he can’t believe how effortless it is doing kindling with this product, even using a small hammer. It handles larger pieces of wood as well as smaller ones. He says it deserves five stars.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersKindling splitters come in all shapes and sizes. YouTube has dozens of videos on them. Before buying a splitter, it would be good idea to watch some of these because they do provide useful buying information. With regards to this splitter. The construction is impeccable. Solid steel not tubular steel parts. Unlike some cast iron units, nothing is bolted together. The welds are solid and the base is very stable and the powder coat paint finish was well done. Its rugged and because the blade is steel you can file it a bit to improve the ease of splitting.

I first used this up on my porch which was not optimal-I had to pad it so I did not crack a tile. In the future, I will bolt it to a solid platform like a big log-plus that would raise it off the ground. With a 3 lbs hammer I breezed through splitting down dozens of logs and split wood. It was fantastic.

The opening is large and all my split logs and smaller diameter logs fit wonderfully. The ‘V’ blade shape is great and does make splitting a little easier. The spreaders are smaller than many other kindling splitters and that is a very helpful feature when it comes to splitting unseasoned hardwood. The other feature I like about this, is its tall enough to hammer through most split log lengths 12-18″ easy.

I would absolutely recommend this kindling splitter.

The height of this kindling splitter is almost perfect. When i mount it to a base it will be perfect and my back will be better too. Its height makes me bend over too much as it is. I had to try it out today to see if it worked.
It handles 20″ seasoned oak like a champ!!! Sometimes you have to smack it pretty hard to get the split moving but then a couple of regular hits and you are done. Even stubborn pieces that are really too long for the splitter crack completely when you give it room to go down farther.
If it holds up it will be a great buy, and i hope it does.

OMG! this has been the easiest thing I’ve ever used to make kindling. I was able to make enough for the whole winter season in a very short period of time. It goes through wood like butter. I love that it has a cover to keep it in great working order.

While this splitter does work as advertised, there is an issue regarding the blade. For splitting fresh-cut trees, it is horribly difficult with the blade as-is. The coating makes the blade dull and, while it works fine for old, dry wood and pre-split logs, newer logs are tough. This is easily rectified by removing the coating and sharpening the blade a bit, but it negates the “safety” aspect. Therefore, you will have to choose between efficient cutting (sharp blade) or safe cutting (coated blade).

Overall, this is a good, heavy-duty splitter. You will simply need to determine whether a safe blade or and effective blade is more important to you.

    Choose between safety or efficiency

We have a Northern Michigan getaway in the middle of the woods, where we enjoy using fallen wood as fuel for campfires. We don’t need large pieces of firewood as would be appropriate for heating, we just enjoy the recreational aspect of a crackling campfire. This is just the ticket for reducing the size of the raw-cut branches to a more usable dimension, as well as further splitting it to kindling to start the fires.

We’d already obtained a similar product from another vendor, but I was a bit undecided whether its size would be suitable for our use, despite the fact that it was sturdy and worked very well in my initial testing. When I saw this one, there was little doubt that it is a better choice, due to its larger size.

It stands 5″ taller than our other one, and has a 9″ opening, two inches larger than the smaller splitter. This may not sound like much of a difference, but seeing the two side-by-side illustrates that we won’t have to restrict the size of the limbs to the same degree we would to use on the smaller one. The accompanying picture shows the difference in size between the two. I’ve obscured the other device by coloring it blue, but the relative sizes are accurate.

This one has a V-shaped cutting blade, which starts the split from the outside of the piece, rather than the center, as do most similar devices. It remains to be seen as to whether this is an advantage over the other type. It appears to be sturdy, with good quality welds, so I expect to get a satisfactory service life from it.

I like the fact that it can be attached to a stump or platform for permanent use, and also comes with a cover, although it’s doubtful that the inexpensive vinyl will hold up season-after-season.

We’ll have to wait for next spring to take it up north for the trial-by-fire, but I have tested it a bit here at home. Maybe we’ll enjoy a fire in the fireplace during the upcoming Christmas season!

Handy tool for starting and feeding campfires!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI had high hopes for this splitter as a portable, use anywhere splitter. But to to frank, unless you have it mounted on a stump or other firm structure you will be hard pressed to split whole logs.

The concept of the splitter is great. Place you piece of wood over the v-shaped blade, give it a whack, and voila, you have split wood. In part, this is true for most species of wood.

The manufacturer mentions you can use this anywhere. They even have a picture of it next to the fireplace. Do not use this inside, unless you do not like your floor. The energy transferred from your hammer, through the wood, to the floor, will eventually damage the floor.

To properly use this splitter you must bolt it to a fixed structure (like a tree stump). If you don’t do that, there will be too much vibration in the splitter, and that translates to wasted energy. Don’t try to anchor this to hard dirt or grass, again there will be too much vibration.

My first test was trying to split some already split Hotwood brand firewood. These are dried pine alder, and spruce, that has been split already. This splitter had no problem splitting those pieces even further. Then I tried a dried log of birch (cut a year ago). The log was about 3-4″ in diameter. The splitter had troubled catching on, but after a dozen whacks it was split. For my last test I tried a green piece of birch cut just a month ago. The splitter barely made a dent.

From the tests, I can see this splitter works great on dried split wood. Whole logs and green wood is a different story. The birch log that was not dried may haver been an unfair test, but I wanted to see its limit. Birch is pretty hard and I wanted to see how it would perform. Not having the splitter bolted to a firm hard base probably played a major role, but if that is a requirement, then this splitter (and all others in this category) should not be considered portable.

Had trouble with birch log. Needs to be mounted

It’s durably constructed with a low base to make it stable. It is a little low for me, but thoughtfully they have included some screws so you can screw it into a stump of your choice of height. Surprisingly, the “blade” is dull to the touch, but makes short work of all the wood I sent through it. Small logs and larger alike no issues. Included as well is a cap to weatherproof it, but I don’t think it needs it for our place. The only suggestion I would have is to have an additional loop for my mallet handle to fit in, but I guess that’s a better to best innovation. Overall works exactly the way it should a significant improvement to using an ax to break up wood for your burning needs!
