Over the moon with the results
Really happy with the result so far, I’ve used it 6 times and have seen I would say an 80% I’ve gone from shaving every day to every 4 days and that’s only because I don’t like even a few hairs. Really happy with it I have been looking at buying one of these for years but because of the price put it off however I’m so happy I have and would buy another one tomorrow if I needed too.
As a pcos sufferer hai has been the Bain of my life since I can remember. I have seen a difference from the first time I have used this device – albeit a patchy one. Grateful to find a product to reduce such a major issue for me. Slows the hair growing back by weeks (rather than hours) and some hair didn’t grow back at all. Takes minutes for small areas
Hairless wonde
Philips is the go to for ipl machines and this one is just ad good as its more expensive cordless version. The nice touch with this is it also comes with a handy little trimmer too. Before you buy something like this is suggest you do your research as this is quite a large purchase. These devises are not a quick fix and takes multiple sessions over a few months and while they slow and thin the growth of hair it doesn’t completely remove it in places. Also take note that these are not suitable for all skin tones. This is relatively pain free, just a warming sensation at most. All in all if you want a great, well built ipl machine then philips is the one to go fo
Life changing!
Life changing! After my 4th use hair growth has been reduced massively! Just a few patchy hairs growing. absolutely amazed as i was super hairy! 5th time using tonight and had to shave just a small amount of hair away before use! Definitely recommend, why didn’t i get this sooner is my only regret! Very impressed
Easy To Set Up And Use
I ordered this Philips Lumea Advanced IPL hair removal device as it has attachments for different parts of your body including your face and I wanted to stop shaving my legs.
Once I had taken everything out of the box I followed the instructions and downloaded the app onto my Android phone. This app when opened guides you through everything that you need to do with your Philips Lumea. I have the perfect hair colour on my arms and legs – mid brown – so was able to complete a test area as per the instructions and as I had no reaction was able to go on and begin my treatments 24 hours later. I have been concentrating on my legs as they are the main area thatI wish hair to stop growing on so that I can stop shaving. I have now completed 3 treatments – one every 2 weeks – and I can see that the hair on my legs is beginning to thin out and I am getting much less regrow than each time.
This is an amazing unit and well worth the money as you can do your treatments at home without having to pay salon fees. I love that the device comes with different tips for other parts of the body eg face, armpits, lower body. Next I want to begin treatment on my upper lip but I shall complete my leg treatments first.
This was such an easy device to set up and start using in my own home. You are guided every step of the way by the app on your phone and you can even set reminders for when your next treatment is due to be done. It is a costly device but is much cheaper in the end than having to book numerous salon treatments where they use the same sort of device. I highly recommend this device for ease of use and the guided app.
Effective and convenient long term hair removal
Its very important to fully read through the manual and understand how to correctly use this device before use, and to follow the instructions to the letter.
I picked this up for my wife to use, she’s always trying out new beauty treatments and devices and she has had several sessions for hair removal in the past so I thought this would be ideal if she can do these treatments at home and save some money in the longer term.
It does take several sessions before you start to notice any difference in hair growth, but there is a definite slowing of hair growth, and she has said it is reasonably easy to use and is happy with its effectiveness. There is some minor pain during use, but nothing unbearable and once used a few times you become accustomed to it and it doesn’t bother you too much.
My wife says she much prefers using this over the Philips epilator that we received to review from amazon previously, but it is quite a bit more expensive.
it really works
This is amazing I wish I had bought it sooner i read the reviews and was skeptical but it really really works. My facial hair has upset me for years but for the first time this summer I can probably go make up free without worrying about my hai
Peace of mind for weeks!
I have been waiting a while to try this IPL for myself. I have heard alot about it, but I had to try it myself to give honest feedback. This IPL comes with three attachments and one thing is for sure that it’s a great great quality IPL for home usage. The instructions were pretty simple and once you watch a few tutorials, it gets easier to use it for yourself. It doesn’t gives you instant results, so you have to be patient for months and months. I have used it twice now and honestly can’t tell much difference. But I do trust the brand to give me long term results I am desiring for. The device is not absolutely pain free, but the pain level is much much lower than waxing. You can easily go 3-4 weeks without hair the first time you use it. This device can be used for the whole body. So when you see the benefits it definitely exceed the one time cost spent!
I bought this machine as I have thick dark hair and pale skin, but hair removal is really aggravating for my sensitive skin. I’ve been using it for almost a year and my hair hardly grows back now which is incredible! It doesn’t hurt at all and although can take quite a while, I definitely think it’s worth it. I was going to deduct one star as it was meant to come with a hair trimmer attachment and that never came, but I didn’t bother returning it as I wasn’t that fussed. Also it can overheat so sometimes you have to give it a rest for 5 minutes, but again, I really don’t mind. Have tried the more expensive one by Philips and think this one is just as good. I don’t think it’s even dramatic to say that it has changed my life and confidence.
Give it time
Was bought as a gift from my husband, it’s a bit chunky and it takes a while to get used to as you don’t know where you’ve done so there’s bit of guessing involved, but having hair free legs/and other areas is worth i
Very good and effective but need to be patie
My wife is so happy with this Philips lumea advanced ipl hair removal device.
First of all i think i should say that you need to read the instruction very well and be patient.
The device its doing his job but you need to take it easy one step at the time and respect the
instructions otherwise you can get hurt.It has also a skin tone sensor which check the skin tone and if the skin its to dark it will not work ,so be careful and read the instruction well You need to know not to get scared that this device maybe until you get use to it it will sting a little bit.You check the skin tone you have and if you are able to use on your skin because its not good for all the skin type and not good also for all
the hair colors. The trimmer included its nice looking and good to have it in your handbag. This its a very good device my wife is happy with it and she said that she would recommend .
This has worked an absolute treat.
I have pale skin and dark brown hair, so probably the optimum combination for using it. Had previously had salon IPL which had worked very well in just a couple of sessions, but the hairs on my legs had grown back quite a lot and I wanted a higher bikini line than I could afford at the salon!
Did my legs every two weeks for four sessions then again after a month. Now I’m just doing spot zaps when the odd hair pops up, every 2-4 weeks. I no longer need to shave armpits or legs at all, which is pretty good. I just use the little trimmer and then zap, but I’d say there were 10 single hairs total on my legs this week, after 3-4 weeks regrowth.
It has also worked really well on bikini line and above lip. I’ve done my bikini every week, which is not strictly in line with instructions, but has been effective. It works on whole area, even darker skin, although the hairs are a little more stubborn so it’s taken quite a few sessions.
You have to be prepared to spend about an hour a week on this. I did lower legs, armpits and bikini one week, then upper legs, lip and bikini the next. It keeps the sessions shorter. But I’d say I’ve done 8 sessions max and now I’m pretty much just doing upkeep.
My legs feel smooth and lovely and I’ll never have to be worried about impromptu swimming again
I only find it a little painful and warm in intimate bikini area and armpits, where I turn it down to 3 and 4 respectively. otherwise I’d genuinely say it’s painless, even on highest setting 5.
I’m so pleased with this. I hate shaving and waxing and this is a piece of cake compared with those and considerably longer lasting.
I wish I’d bought one years ago.
IT WORKS!
My friend has been raving about Philips Lumea for the last 2 years and I’ve been waiting to lay my hands on it for just as long.
I’ve been using this product for the past month and although I know I still have a little to go my word! This does work.
Beautiful stylish design of Philips Lumea Advanced IPL is really sleek and easy to hold. You get 3 attachments for the laser and it comes with a nice bag to pop the IPL in.
I’ve downloaded the app recommended and followed all the tips and tricks to a t and I found that after the first treatment hair on my legs was not growing for a very long time – pretty much all the way up to the second treatment 2 weeks later. Bikini line is showing a less of a progress I guess due to hair being thicker and armpit hair worked lots better now after second treatment.
I am really impressed with LUMEA and love the app. It keeps me on top of things by sending reminders and remembering for me when to use it all.
I always thought that these things work best on dark thick hair but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Philips Lumea Advanced IPL works on my thin fair hair and this treatment doesn’t hurt which makes a change from horrible epilating. Skin is left nice and smooth and not irritated. I love it!
Hair nearly all gone for good
Amazing product does exactly as instructions – has safety aspect which detects dark patches of skin. Hair growth almost all
Gone after using it per instructions. Brilliant but saves lots of time and money
Powerful, fast and easy to use
I have tried and tested a few IPL devices and as Philips are one of the leading brands in this field so I wanted to try this out. After using this for a few weeks, I can say that it does work but you have to be patient with it and keep following the schedule.
One thing to note is that you can use this device if your skin is light to dark, but not the very darkest. It is capable of handling for both large and small body areas. However, you also have to be careful if you have tattoos, if you’re pregnant, breast-feeding, have diabetes, epilepsy, or if you are extra sensitive to light. These are pretty standard list of safety considerations for any IPL device so nothing new there.
The device came in a very premium packaging and I was really impressed with the attention to detail in the packaging. The devices and all the attachments are neatly arranged in plastic packaging. The devices I have used till now were all corded but this is the first one which is cordless. It can work both on mains-power and cordless. I love this freedom to use it wherever I want. As soon as I held it in my hand, I felt that it is superb build quality. It felt quite heavy in the hand which is probably due to the inbuilt battery.
Using the device is really fast and easy. It is really precise and quite comfortable in the hand. The controls are clear and simple, and the flash window easy to see from most angles. It gives excellent reach all around your body, and I find it especially good for backs of legs. You get 2 metres of durable tangle free cord and the long handle keeps it out of your way. I also like that you can use this on your face, and hard to reach areas.
The device has 5 intensity levels. The lower IPL levels are safe for dark or medium skin tones, but fair skin tones can use the highest IPL levels 4 and 5. For medium and dark skin, use this clever skin tone sensor. It won’t flash if your skin is too dark. Keeping the flash button pressed, I can flash a full leg in just under 10 minutes, and my whole-body in around 40 minutes.
There’s a large and curved attachment to fit arms, legs, and torso, a small and curved one for bikini line and underarms, and a smaller flat one for your upper lip, chin, and jaw.
It’s bigger and heavier than other devices I have used but it’s easy to handle, very comfy and fast, so it doesn’t get tiring. You should shave in between each session, and between as you need, unless there’s no hair left. You have to do 4 to 5 sessions, one every two weeks to see full effects of this. You’ll notice it working after a few sessions, with softer, lighter, and slower regrowth. Then, bald patches appear, and gradually get bigger. After 4 or 5 sessions, I noticed that my skin was completely smooth. The results might differ for others but for my skin it did the job quite well.
I really liked that this came with the trimmer as well which is perfect for removing minor facial hair.
Pros
Really comfortable due to the ergonomic design
Powerful
Amazing results with continued and regular use
Cons
Price is high
Heavy
Overall, I am really impressed by this device as it’s powerful, fast and easy to use and. It’s really a all-rounder for all body areas, but especially good for legs or whole-body hair removal. Highly Recommended
More than 85% hair-free
Just amazing! Only after 3 treatments I can say that I’ve lost more than 80% of my armpit and leg hairs! I never believed in at home laser devises but they are amazinggg and a Must!
Sooo easy to use, just see which intensity the devise shows you to use depending on you skin tone and then voila! Sit in front of the tv and snap! You will be done in less than 10 min without any pain!
I used the devise 3 times (with 2 weeks interval) and going to use it for the forth time and then will go for every month. When I started using the machine I saw the result from the first use which was unbelievable!
It comes with 3 heads for face, leg, bikini area.
I highly recommend the device, it is expensive but worth every penny! Much cheaper than doing laser at beauty salons with same results, no pain, comfortably in front of tv!
Fast and easy to use but we’d recommend wearing your sunglasses while using it.
First thoughts:
Pros
Wired IPL version fires fast with the constant power supply.
Gun is small and light for ease of use.
Manual settings are quite simple to use.
Bundled trimmer included which is a nice touch.
Cons
Not meant to be used on fair hair (Blonde, platinum, red or grey).
No goggles included in the kit (incredibly bright flash, even when you’re looking away).
Well my partner was looking forward to trying this as it will save her cutting her legs to ribbons with razors (which is usually the case).
There is a lot of reading to do first to make sure you’re using the IPL safely on skin that might be damaged, freckled or sensitive and unfortunately it isn’t suitable for all types of skin tones or hair colours (it is not recommended for use on light hair colours so check before you commit). The ideal conditions are pale skin and dark hair as the pulsed light is absorbed by anything dark (bad news for heavily tanned or dark skin but effective on dark hair).
It is recommended you do a patch test on shaved legs 24 hours before use and pulse 5 areas using each of the 5 levels to see what intensity you can tolerate.
We then started the first treatment the next day when there were no bad reactions to the patch test (we did not re-pulse the areas that were used in the patch test). Initial treatments should be once every two weeks to make hair fall out and slow the growth, then treatments can reduce to once a month when the guide recommends a change in the treatment schedule.
Details and things to note (See pictures):
Intense Pulsed Light device with a small collection of interchangeable heads for different areas of the body which have different sensitivities. There are interchangeable heads for use on the legs, bikini line/underarms and face.
Light intensity levels can be selected by a short press on the power button to cycle through the levels 1-5. This was a little bit annoying as it means if you want to drop down a level from 5 to 4 you have to click through 1,2,3 to get back around to 4.
The head needs to be in good contact with the skin for the safety feature to allow the gun to fire. You will get a white ready light on the back of the gun when you have good contact and the flash is charged, you can then pull the trigger to fire a pulse of light and start the short recharge before it’s ready to fire again.
It’s light and easy to use and my partner can get around the back of her legs without too much trouble.
A small portable trimmer is included in this kit for eyebrows and other small areas.
Final thoughts:
So far this is working out well but it’s a two person job to get the best out of it without missing areas. You need to move the gun in small sections as close together as possible but without overlapping any area you’ve previously pulsed with light in that treatment session.
We think they should have included a pair of shaded goggles for this price point in case you don’t have any. This is so you can see what you’re pulsing without getting sunspots off the super bright flash so we’d recommend doing it in good light to avoid the flash contrast and wearing some sunglasses if you have a pair handy.
We’d definitely recommend this method for long term hair removal but you need to do your research to make sure it’s safe to use on your skin and hair type. If it is then you should give this some serious consideration.
Best hair removal I have tried so fa
This hair removal device is really good quality and very easy to use just makes sure you ready carefully instructions before use so you know how it works and you don’t hurt yourself .
It feels the safest, fastest and most efficient IPL technology, I have uesd
The flashlight targets each follicle with enough power to suppress the hair regrowth painlessly. You will never have to wax, tweeze or go to the beauty salon again. Visible hair reduction in just 4 weeks. For your whole-body hair removal including face, body, arms, underarms, legs, bikini line, etc. I have uesd different laser before but this gives less pain and comfort
This will definitely be my number one and I’m so happy that been chosen to reviewe it.
Already have recommended it to my sister and would do to you too.
Price is absolutely worth .
Results seen quickly so it works!
An excellent alternative to the more expensive salon and laser hair treatments. It isn’t permanent, but the upkeep of the treatment is fairly simple.
Instructions are easy to follow. The device itself is lightweight and compact. I can hold it comfortably in one hand. Very easy to use.
Is it pain-free? The simple answer is no. Any option that removes hair from its roots is going to be painful as expected. Is it unbearably painful? The answer is no. In fact it’s absolutely tolerable. How painful the process is depends on body skin type and which part of my body I’m zapping. For example, it’s completely painless on my underarms, but I always feel a quick snap of pain (almost like a needle) on my leg – but the pain goes almost instantly, like a mini electric shock.
My legs sometimes tingle for a couple of hours after the treatment, but they calm down completely after a full day.
It takes me about 3 minutes to finish both underarms, and about 15-18 minutes to finish both legs – though my first time took me more than half an hour because I was still trying to get used to using the device.
I haven’t yet finished the complete 8-week period, but so far, I can visibly see a difference on my underarms and legs. My usually fast-growing hair now grows much slower and is noticeably finer than before.
I didn’t see any results after my first go, but after every time I did it again, it definitely proved to be working. In contrast to epilating, the hair-free result lasts longer.
It takes time and commitment (and that’s why epilating would be much faster for hair removal than IPL), but the results are definitely worth it. Would highly recommend.

Works fast at reducing hair growth!
I have been learning lots about these lately and have had chance to use a few a compare.
This Phillips Corded IPL works fast at REDUCING hair growth and within 6 treatments stops hair growth altogether for a few months before needing to top it up. This IPL works best on leg and arm hair and takes a little longer for under arms a bikini line.
I like the skin sensor, most don’t come with this. It can recognise your skin type and set the laser accordingly for maximum comfort. This machine is corded only, i have tried the non corded version too but honestly for the price difference id go with corded as it doesn’t make that much difference.
Being so powerful i have found its slower than some of the cheaper brands and take it from 5 minutes per leg to around 8-10 however you do see the results faster. Also it comes with different adapters for different parts of the body to maximise hair loss which you again don’t see in most cheaper ipls.
The satin trimmer is a great addition, I love to use it when I don’t have time to pluck my eyebrows I just give them a quick trim and I’m off.
This one has been the best all rounder I have used so far but its important to understand that it will not remove hair forever. Without a doubt it significantly reduces hair growth and hair doesn’t grown back spikey and stubbly.
My Wife has been trying this Philips Lumea Advanced IPL for just over 3 Weeks.. & Seems to Work Very Well for Pain Free hair Removal/Tamer .. Be Prepared, its Not an Overnight Miracle or Permanent, you have to first complete a fair few initial sessions over the course of 8 to 10 weeks.. then continue with follow-up/touch up treatment every 4 to 6 weeks thereon after on any new growth or missed patches sprouting through. I will follow up in a month to 6 weeks time on how she is fairing.. as obviously she is still in the early stages of the treatment. Very Easy & Comfortable to Use, good to know its from a Safe & Trusted Brand like Philips.
It does not actually ‘kill the hair follicles’ preventing any regrowth.. the Intense Light Pulses put them into a ‘sleep/dormant’ state for a time.. which is no bad thing, you might want your ‘unwanted hair’, if we ever enter another Ice Age!
But my wife says, that compared to her occasionally shaving at times, or as she does, mostly using her Philips Epilator.. it is a lot less stingy painful (says she’s used to it after years.) but not quite as quick though.
I’m convinced my wife is a masochist/sadist.. Ouch! how could any one rip out hair or pluck eyebrows.. I’ve refused repeated requests on my eyebrows, trimming yes, plucking ..No!
After reading the Included fully explained, easy to follow & understand Instructions.. You have to Shave First?! She is doing her legs & facial hair with this at the moment, allow for about an hour, she said. Initially every 2 weeks for the first 8 or 10 weeks of around 4 to 5 sessions.. she has only completed 2 so far, but can see a few small patches where she must have missed on her legs, as there is some longer thicker stubble in places.
She said its not painful.. (I did try on my arm, myself, for the sake of experience.. I like my hairy Neanderthal arms!) So can also confirm that when she says, its like when you first ‘catch the sun’ in spring/summer on your bare skin.. leaves you feeling a bit ‘smarted’ on the skin after using, but only for around 15 to 20 minutes. When I tried it a few weeks back, it was like a ‘warmth’ when the light flashes.
She said its comfortable to hold & use in her small hands with a nice balance.. really easy for her using as well, just switch on with the single button on the top cover, you can cycle the ‘Intensity’ with that one button too.. Obviously must have a cooling fan & charge intensifier as it ‘Whirs’, but is pretty quiet..
She says you must press it onto your skin well, if not the ‘Ready’ Strip Light at the backend will not light up, (it also won’t if you have the wrong skin or hair colour) then press the trigger on handle & it pulses a flash, then move onto the next section.
She liked the 3 different laser attachment heads for different parts of her body, the largest ‘Windowed’ one.. for legs etc. is already fitted, with a smaller windowed one for Facial & Upper lip Hair, also one specifically for Bikini area too. She used the ‘Free’ included battery pen type facial/eyebrow trimmer for doing her face fuzz, before using the IPL on her upper lip area & sides.
As she says, a bit longer initially to do, than her epilator, which leaves her legs smooth for about 2 months, but once over the initial ‘Start-up’ phase.. & then only maintaining every 6 to 8 weeks or so, and without the prickly irritation of the epilator.. this she feels would be better!
You don’t have to do all your area’s in one session/day either.. My wife done her leg & face, then her other leg on the following evening.
As mentioned, a Rolling Review.. I will report back on my wife’s verdict & feelings following her initial start phase and afterwards with any regrowth in maintenance.
But she is pleased & happy to be using this so far, its easy, without any problems or issues.. she has pale skin & blondish hair on face, darker on legs etc. Says give 5 stars & we will adjust if necessary for the ‘results’.
Excellent quality and Effective
Philips Lumea Advanced IPL Hair Removal Device for Face and Body
The review is from my wife:
The build quality is of an excellent, top-quality device. The shape and size are perfect and comfortable to hold on my hand. Operating the machine is quite simple, has just one button which controls everything.
I have been using this device for nearly a month now. I already can see a bit of reduction in hair growth on my arms and legs. I can see it works slowly but consistently for me, and I do not doubt that after I finish my treatment period, the result would be perfect.
The device is painless, straightforward to use, has a detailed manual. I suggest reading the manual carefully before use. The pouch is handy to store the device when you are not using it. Also, the little trimmer is of good quality and helpful to use in a small area.
Overall, I don’t have any issue with this device so far, and I will update my review if I notice anything to mention. It’s on the expensive side, but it is worth every penny for the quality of the device.

eed persistence for months to gradually prevent hair growth
his is the philips lumea ipl hair removal device, several attachments for body, face and bikini area are included in this set, also a touch up trimmer to trim facial hairs and eye brows
this is a beautiful device, well built, sleek and ergonomic design, actually using it was kinda like using a massager wand, but it’s more comfortable and less heavy
i’m not the user of this device, i ordered it for my wife, the following comment was her experience after using it for weeks
this is the first time i used an ipl device, treatment steps are more complicated than i ever thought, but there are plenty of video tutorial on the internet, and also there is a philips lumea ipl app, which has a very detailed step by step guide for how to use the device correctly, also it helps me to setup treatment schedule for different body parts, so i don’t have to mark and remember the date for next treatment, as long as the push notification is enabled for the lumea app, it will push the notifications at the right time of the date
it’s more complicated to use then i thought, it has to be flat surface in order to let the device light up and trigger the laser, so it’s a bit hard for some bony area, like hair near knee, toes; better ask for help for back of body, back of legs treatment, and be sure to train the helper up as the process need skill and not that straightforward, also need patience, it would be a nice bi-weekly couple activity, also had to do it on shaved and unmoisturized skin
there will be slightly burn sensation when using it, uncomfortable on sensitive areas, but would get used to it after used it for many times
i saw hair is still growing on treated areas, i understand it’s not a magic wand that stop all hair growing after used once, it will gradually stop the growth of all the hair on treatment area, so i still have to shave and re-do the treatment until all hair stop growing, it will need persistence for at least months
all in all, i’m satisfied with this product, would recommend
Get it!!!
This review is for the Philips Lumea Advanced IPL Hair Removal Device for Face and Body with 3 Attachments and Skin Tone Sensor, Includes Complimentary Compact Touch-Up Trimmer — BRI923/00
This is fantastic product and so much cheaper than going to your local beautician. It may seem expensive but if you are looking at this product you must know how much laser treatments cost.
The product is really well made and Philips Lumia are the best. It is very simple to use and can generally be used anywhere on the body, include face. It generally takes a few treatments to start showing results but it DEFO works. I have used now for the past couple months and am seriously seeing a reduction is hair. It generally works on all skin and hair type but dark hair is better as the laser targets the dark hair root better.
The product is simple to use and comfortable to hold. You can change the setting depending on skin tone.
Totally would recommend! Worth the money and will actually save you load in the long run!
Good mid-price IPL
Like any IPL device, you won’t see results instanta -depending on your hair / skin type it takes several sessions (think minimum of 5 for noticeable differences in many cases). However, it does provide results over the longer term, if you stick with it, and don’t expect a total absence of pain -remember there is heat involved here! How long it will last will vary from person to person. Up to 8 weeks is the claim -for some, perhaps, although I would suggest ‘hope for a month & anything else is a bonus’.
Well-made and neatly styled, with attractive rose-gold trim this Philips Lumea unit is a straightforward one to use; functionality is perfectly straightforward with three detachable heads to adapt to different areas, and programmes that adjust on the fly to different skin tones, positions etc. The controls work well, so no issues there. Like most such beasts, it is at its most effective with paler skins with dark hair for optimal contrast, while applies here; I can’t comment on others. Given these conditions though, it seems solid, so a straightforward (if not cheap) recommendation if you’re in the market for such a product.
Packaging is modest, as is the unit size and weight so most hands will operate with comfort. Avoid highly tanned skin and tattoos, per usual for IPL devices. The small included trimmer is a decent, if basic item for use on the face as appropriate -no issues there. Overall, it seems to be a good, well-conceived product that can be recommended if you follow the guidelines.
After so much research into different IPL a machines, reviews YouTube videos I chose this one. My skin is pale and my leg armpit and bikini hair is dark, the rest is blondeish. I started using this early feb it’s now April my leg hairs are none existence I followed the instructions and used weekly after shaving. I use to shave and by the time I stepped out the shower I felt my hair grew back stubbly. It made me so upset on holiday with my ingrown hairs which where painful and leaving scars. This is the best thing I’ve ever done. My leg hairs take over a week to grow back my armpits and bikini grow so much slowly 4 days slower I’d say and much thinner and some areas have stopped growing in patches. My ingrown hairs have stopped as the hair is thinner and I have to shave less I’m so happy . Please everyone try this it’s changed my life I’m next making my mom try it honestly theirs a 100 day guarantee so May as well try it !!’
Amazing device which works , and are very useful especially as the summer are coming
First of all, it is a high-quality product that is perfect for IPL hair removal. However due to the size of it, it takes a lot of t time to use it over a bigger area like the legs, so if you want to do what be ready to invest a bit of time. So inside the packaging you get 3 different attachments ( Face, Bikini and Body), a small Touch up trimmer, a pouch to store the device, cleaning clothe and the adapter. The Hair removal device is really light and is quite comfortable to hold which is really good as you will need to hold them for a long time. The manual provided is very useful and detailed and should be read properly, as it explains all very clearly and it will really help to use the device. Which especially important if you want this to work. Controls are extremely easy as well as it really has just 1 button to use. It controls the power levels of the hair remover and the same button turns on and off the device so very easy. The cable is too short in my opinion so I end up using an extension cord for comfortable use. And so far I am really happy with this device as the summer season are coming and it’s the perfect time to start using this device, as it works really well.
I rarely write reviews but I know how helpful they are, especially when looking for and investing like this. I’ve had dark facial hair for years, thankfully mostly under the chin, but it has still bothered me and has gotten thicker and more wide spread over the years, despite having paid for laser and IPL treatment in the past. I I have wanted to buy one of these type of things for years, but was never sure if they were worth investing in as they are quite expensive and having bought a home laser kit years ago which did very little, I was sceptical. I’ve only performed one treatment so far with this, however I have noticed a significant slowing of the growth in the hair treated, which is synonymous with the clinic treatments I’ve had in the past.
I was tempted to go over the area again at first, as it seemed to be less intense a feeling than the clinic treatments I’d had in the past (I’m using the second highest-highest setting as suggested by the skin tone test). But having waited a week I’m glad I’ve stuck to the instructions, I did cause myself some pigment discolouration with the laser kit years ago by doing this so I would suggest following the instructions fully with this.
My hair is quite thick and I honestly wasn’t expecting to see results like that straight away, and of course it’s early days and I’ll have to see how the regrow things is affected, but I think the result so far is a promising sign that the device is doing what it’s meant to. I’m only one week after my first treatment so I’ll come back and update this review in a few weeks once more results are clear, but if you’re like me and wanting to get rid of or at least find a better way to manage unwanted facial hair, this could be a great option… as long as you have the right skin tone and hair colour etc.
So far I would recommend this as a good option for people looking to reduce hair growth. I don’t expect to completely get rid of it for good, but even professional treatment won’t do that. And at the half the price of 1 course of treatment this looks like it could be a much more cost effective option too!
UPDATE:
2 weeks after my second treatment, most of the hair on my chin area has gone completely! I’m really quite surprised and impressed by the effectiveness of this device, I was expecting to have to wait longer for these kind of results. So far I’m very happy with it and would recommend it for those with similar problem facial hair, with the right colour and skin tone of course.
A hair removal solution which is pain free
Firstly, the build quality is brilliant, it’s a sold piece of equipment, quite heavy to hold and has a premium feel to it. This model is cordless so you can use it anywhere and everywhere. It’s got a ergonomic design to it and even the flash windows are curved to contour with your skin. This device is also suitable for all skin tones so there is no special model to buy.
This is costly but you do get what you pay for and I have used a much cheaper Chinese version of this , it used IPL so similar and isn’t half as good or effective. Let me talk about the lamp life. The cheaper brands will only last for a certain number of flashes before you need to replace the whole thing, where this can last 15 years or more.
Do not expect results straight away , it will take quite a few session before you see noticeable results, the hair became thinner first before it limits growth. Then you need to keep on top of it every 1-2 weeks. This isn’t a lot of effort really for such great results.
The manual does suggest you do a skin test first and asks you to avoid using sunbeds for some reason. Using the device is super easy though and you only need to flick through the instructions. You will also need to shave first to. You can adjust the intensity levels but I use the skin sensor to choose for me. Press the trigger to flash your skin then move to the next spot. It’s painless and there is little effort involved. There are different flash windows for different body parts like face, under arm and bikini areas. Some have filters on the window for safety so you don’t get UV rays in your eyes. You get 3 attachments with this model.
I really like this device, It’s long-life lamps, different window heads, its cordless / corded and easy to use design all make this a premium product and much better than the unkwnon brand version. You also get a mini trimmer with this which is great for touching up and shaping.
One of the most advanced IPL hair removal device
This is one of the great IPL hair removal device from Philips.
Better precision and fast applications are the key features. The operation is quite smooth. Goes very well with your skin and even with different skin tones.
Suitable for full body application. Please note: Its corded not cordless.
It comes with 3 different attachments to meeting your skin tone needs.
It also includes a complimentary Compact Touch-Up Trimmer. Very useful for facial hair trimming or removal. Even for styling your eyebrows.
how to use
I am confused because the instructions say to completely shave the area, but when I did laser with a doctor I shouldnt shaved them completely. Is it very important for the hair not to be visible?
I’ve included some horrible pics of my hairy legs so you can see how it’s working! The pics with 2 legs is 2 weeks of hair growth after the 1st treatment, 1 leg on grey carpet is 2 weeks if hair growth after 2nd, and 1 leg on duvet is 2 weeks after 3rd.
I have dark hair and pale skin which is ideal and I think I’m 4 treatments in now, and about 90% of hair is gone on my legs. I’ve also tried underarms but with low success.
I use setting 5 which doesn’t hurt me at all or leave any burns.
The process is easy, but I find it incredibly boring. It takes quite a long time to do both legs thoroughly.
Would recommend – expensive but worth it.
I was considering getting one of these for ages, but never did because it’s not cheap and a luxury I could do without.
However, I am so pleased I decided to treat myself!!!
I’m on my 5th treatment now, and my hair has been reduced hugely!
It’s so easy to use, painless and super quick and convenient.
Hair doesn’t really grow much at all between treatments.
Not quite a five, because armpits aren’t as good, and still having to shave one a week or so – but saying that, that is still a huge improvement!
(For reference I have black hair and very pale skin)
I ordered the Philips Lumea about a year ago and have been using it ever since so I thought it is time to write a review.
What’s in the box?
* Lumea Prestige IPL device
* Curved-in body attachment (4.1 cm)
* Flatfacial attachment (2 cm)
* Curved-out precision attachment(3 cm, BRI954 & BRI953 only)
* Power pack and 2 metre long cable
* Instruction manual
* Lumea App info slip
* Storage pouch
* Cleaning cloth
Before you start, read the user manual and do a skin test.
The manual is a comprehensive, rather dry but easy read. You’ll find helpful diagrams, skin tone and hair colour charts, information on how IPL works, what to expect from your Lumea, instruction for your skin test, how to use it and aftercare guidance.
What does it feel like?
You’ll hear the whirring of the fan and a soft popping sound with each flash.
I found it pain-free with just a slight, occasional sting. But it’s no way as painful as waxing, epilating or threading!
The flashes mostly feel warm against your skin. But some areas, like thighs, bikini line and underarms can smart more because they’re more sensitive. And you may feel increased heat on your bikini line and underarms where your hair is thicker and denser.
After the patch test the recommended treatment schedule is that the first 4 to 5 times you uses Lumea have to be done bi-weekly. I started seeing some results after the 2nd use, after the 4th, there was very little to no hair regrowth. After the initial phase there should be a touch-up every 4 to 8 weeks. As I have light skin but dark hair for me the touch-ups easily last 8 weeks, 8 weeks of absolutely no hair.
I find it very easy to use the Philips Lumea, it is quick and painless (if it hurts you are doing something wrong), there is no mess and nothing sticky to clean afterwards.
Amazing!
Really good! You see results almost instantly! The lip shaver is rubbish though. And make sure not to catch your tattoo’s as I caught mine and it swelled up and has sucked some ink out. Other than that I cant fault!
Also recommend downloading the app as it reminds you and you can log all your treatments easily.
Love amazons pay monthly function! Without that I probably wouldn’t have purchased this.
It does actually work
I’ve used this for about 12 weeks now and definitely see a reduction in hair on areas I’ve used it. The hair grows back very slowly now and comes through in patches, with some areas being apparently completely bald.
Some cons:
The device overheats and will stop working after extended use. If I try to do my legs all in one go after completing one leg the device will need to be switched off for several minutes until it has cooled down and can be used for my other leg. Not the biggest issue but a minor annoyance.
Secondly it would be nice if it had an additional smaller lens as I have some troublesome hairs on my fingers which are basically impossible to zap with this as you need complete coverage of the lens before it lets you do the zappy.
Wife is happy with it, enough said (almost)
Bought for wife, she’s happy and says it’s easy to use and is definitely working. Only suggestion would be get tinted goggles too as creates a bright ambient flash in room.
This is the second hair removal unit 10 x better than the first hair removal unit which the battery discharges after 10 mins of use which had for 3 years, now this new one even better plug straight into mains no charging just use in one go whole body if you like, seems more powerful than the battery unit only now use once a month as a top up for random hairs, be patient at the start after 3 months of use once every 2 weeks you notice a big difference, hairs stop growing back or are small and fine, after years can go months if you for get to use and then only random hairs
This will change your life! I use this for legs and bikini line. I’m a good candidate for it as have fair skin and dark hair. I use the 5th setting (highest setting) I’ve used it for 12 months now and can go 4-5 weeks without shaving at all. And as I’m not shaving now my skin is really soft and smooth. No more razor burn no more spotty legs. it’s worth every penny. feels like and elastic band pinging you when you use it, not painful.
Wouldn’t be without i
Got this when it was on sale and it is just brilliant. I have very dark hair and it lessened the growth in weeks. It doesn’t work in just one go, so carry on using it for great results.
I bought this despite being a bit cynical about it making a difference. I had been for IPL professionally and had given up with it after nearly 500 worth of sessions and buying this was my last ditch effort to try and stem hair growth. I suffer badly with hirsutism and wasn’t holding out hope that it would do anything to my super stubborn hair growth.
3 sessions (about to do my fourth) I’m really seeing the impact it is making. My hair growth is starting to get really patchy, with areas that have already stopped growing anything! I’m using it on leg, stomach, bum, face, chest, underarm and arms and so far I’m super impressed and I’m so hopeful I might finally be getting on top of this growth. Next step with be to get the precision bikini head so I can do that! Fingers crossed it keeps going well, but I genuinely couldn’t recommend this product enough.
Effective
This is one of the best buy I’ve ever done in my life. I bought the latest one but had to buy this cheaper one to gift to my sister. I know she will love this. And for the price, you will never regret it. It is effective!
This is SO GOOD. After reading mixed reviews I decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did. I have PCOS and this has helped treat my face. It is so easy to use and probably takes under two minutes to do the area I need to do. Follow the simple instructions and you will not regret purchasing this. I’m noticing results after a couple of uses
We bought this as an alternative choice to the VEME product which failed within two weeks of purchase. This Lumea is far more advanced in operation and power and my wife has discovered there is a significant difference in the number of sessions needed using this Lumea compared to the VEME product. Already noticing impressive results, far fewer treatments needed (longer timescale between treatments), less skin burns, less time spent on each treatment. Very good so far. If we had any negative comments to make, it would only be that the curvature of the lenses are sometimes difficult to enclose around the area being treated and so it’s sometimes tricky to get the ‘ready’ light. A little practice helps.
🙂
so happy with it!!!!
So far in 3 sessions, most of my hair has desapareced !!
You have to get use to it, it takes me around 2 hours to do all the body… but it is worthit!!
Will take time if you can be bothered
Pretty simple to grasp. Also there’s an app to download if you want to be repeatedly reminded of when to laser your face off.
I got mine around 3 months ago and can defo see differences, but I’m not baldylocks just ye
It’s still fairly early days for me with this product but so far so good. I’ve done several treatments on my armpits and bikini line, 2 weeks apart as the instructions specify. For the first 2 sessions I noticed nothing so was slightly sceptical but since then I’ve definitely noticed a difference. I’d say in a big proportion of the areas there is little/no/very slow hair regrowth. The areas hair is still growing is probably just areas I have missed. I have brown hair (not super dark) and fairly fair skin and have been using the top level (level 5).
I have always been self conscious of my facial and body hair, I had tried several sessions of laser on my face which definitely slowed the growth speed of my facial hair, however once my sessions finished my facial hair started to grow back over time. With each session being quite pricey I decided to stop going all together and ended up shaving my face almost daily as this is required when having laser and because I had started, I couldn’t stop. I had 10x the amount of facial hair growing back either darker or thicker (I know people disagree that this can happen but I did for me!)
My hair is very dark and very thick, I have always dreamed of being completely hair free and thanks to Philips Lumea I am now achieving this goal!
Would definitely recommend, the app is also incredibly handy & helpful.
I’m on my 4th session and have seen a decrease in hair which is great for me as my hair is so thick and dark that when I shave I get bumps. Loving it as it means right now I can go a week without needing to shave my legs, so I imagine after a few more sessions will be even better. Didn’t notice any reduction until 3/4th use so stick with it!
After going to IPL treatment clinics for years, this is the best option to do it yourself at home; it’s very easy to use. I strongly recommend reading the instructions carefully and downloading the Philips Lumea app 🙂
Philips Lumea Advanced IPL is quite pricey but its definitely worth the money in the end. It actually works! If you commit to using it properly and following the instructions the results can be amazing. It makes summer so much easier not having to shave every other day. I had previously used an older IPL machine from a different well-known brand…it was heavy, awkward to use and results were minimal. Philips Lumea is the complete opposite. It’s light so you can bring it with you when you travel and its much faster to use. Overall I would highly recommend this product.
I am now 10 weeks in (5 treatments) and I can definitely say with confidence there is a reduction in hair.
But it’s not magic, not all of it is gone. I would say I’m at about 50% less hair. But what’s left is definitely finer and a lot more manageable. Will continue with it and see where it gets me.
It doesn’t hurt
It’s really easy to use
Noticeable results and kinder on the skin, if a little time consuming
The good:
– Clear instructions and the chance to download an app that reminds you when a session is needed
– Results noticeable after 1st use, especially underarms
– Much kinder on the skin than shaving,
– Different settings dependant on skin tone/hair colour and different attachments for body and face
The bad:
– Can be a little uncomfortable if setting is high
– Time consuming (to be expected though) due to the surface area it covers
Used it for the first time on my legs and face and very easy to use but you do need to be comfy to do your legs as it takes a little time and you have to move your legs around. I didn’t find it painful as I have had laser done before but no issues at all.
Since the first use I have already noticed a reduced amount of growth and in less time.
This product is amazing! Followed the directions and carried it out every 2 weeks (did it every week for my armpits) and two months later I have barely any hair. Is definitely a commitment but if you have a spare 30 minutes every 2 weeks to do this then you have time. Super easy to do. Would recommend to anyone who fit the criteria for hair colour and skin tone!
Love this product! I have questioned wether I should purchase the Philips Lumea for a while and now I just regret not doing it sooner! It is already making my like so much easier. I am already seeing a significant difference on the amount and rate of growth, and it’s so easy to use. I have shaved and epilated my legs for years, however this is by far the best product I have tried!
Best thing ever!
Best thing ever! Wish I’d bought one years ago! Since I have bought another for my daughter and encouraged friends to get one!
Don’t just think about it!
Trust me it’s definitely worth it in the long run!
Resulta take a few months to happen so keep going with i
Good Machine. Delivers Results. Some Discomort. Not suitable for Everyone.
The Philips Lumea Advanced IPL Hair Removal Device is a good machine but may not be suitable for everyone for different reasons. Firstly, enclosed is a safety manuel which provides guidelines and also lists various circumstances under which the machine cannot be used including skin tone, hair colour, skin sensitivity, medications, sun tanned skin etc. So it is very important to read this manual before using the machine.
It looks and feels well made and is easy to hold and use in the hand. The hair removal process is advertised as being painless but this is incorrect, when in use against skin, the machine produces a intense heat/light that actually stings and leaves a redness on some areas of skin. It can be quite uncomfortable. The design of the machine lends itself to work well on legs and arms which it does, however not so well on the face as this can be uncomfortable and difficult to angle so personally I have avoided this. Hair removal is not permanent with treatments requiring repeating to achieve multiple weeks of hair free skin. Overall, while the machine is expensive and is definitely a considered purchase, if it is suitable for you and you can tolerate some discomfort, the Philips Lumea range is a dependable brand that delivers goods results which will last.
Effective
I have wanted to try one of these systems so was keen to test this out.
I was worried that it would be painful and it wasn’t pain free but not as bad as I thought it would be.
It did remove hair effectively but you do need to repeat. You do have to be careful as well, the set comes with good safety instructions.
I am not sure this is really worth the high cost – perhaps if you pay for IPL treatment at a salon it may be.
I think I prefer waxing.
Clean skin and fuzz free body
Having owned a Lumea before I know how it works , but this version is more updated and also it comes with a wonderful Visa pure mini facial cleanser .
The lumea has lots of information on its website, yes you need to shave or get rid o free bulk hair before as this is about eliminating hair growth and follicles , not a hair remover as such . It works an dot works very well, but depending on your hair growth etc it may take some times , but I would imagine this is a battle and chore that you have had to deal with for a sheik , so a few more weeks is really worth it .
Firstly there is prerogative an dyou need to set aside some time . Instructions are very clearly supplied and there are plenty of videos on line . You can use it on your body, not face and be careful with public bits . I have harden middle age skin on my,egos so I had no reaction to the mild heat sensation . I have sensitive skin so only do short spells on other areas and build up . Again lots of info online .
If you are careful , patient you will get very good results .
The wonderful little Visa pure facial is great with it , comes with a travel isle bag an easy to pack . You charge it up , put cleanser on your face and some hot water on the bristles and gentle circulate round your face from few mins and it’s super clean. Has made a huge difference to my skins appearance and it’s far cleaner too . It’s a scaled down version of the larger model and holds a charge well .
Overall this is a great package and really good value for money . I prefer this to buying it individually.
Does the job
This is an (almost) professional grade laser hair removal system. at its core it basically means that hair that is zapped takes longer to grow back.
My wife has used this now for the past few months and has commented that it definitely works (you cant use it all over the body, just areas mentioned in the manual) and it isnt entirely painless. Its not shrieking type pain but its a little nip every time the laser shoots which, by the way, in a dark room looks like a star wars movie !
You do need to continue to use the device – its not a one time use thing. My wife commented that it lasts longer than just shaving alone which in her eyes is definitely a positive but at nearly 300 she wouldn’t buy one and put up with shaving as those razors are much cheaper!
Girls, I have read quite a few reviews on several websites, asked friends who have different types of hair removal gadgets and decided to purchase this one. I was doing it every week- whole body and after a month saw the results. I have dark thick hair all over my body. This is safe to use even on the face or intimidate places. 5 stars but you really have to do it week by week.
If you are of Indian origin and wondering whether it will work on your skin or not then stop thinking and buy it! It works like a charm. My black thick chin hair that I had to wax or thread every other week has reduced in just two sessions. I did my third session today and couldn’t wait to post this review. However it doesn’t work on darker skin complexion( my underarms are dark). Have to probably invest on a underarm skin fairness cream before taking the sessions.
My family consists of four ladies. My wife children (grown up) who together must have all the cosmetic knowledge ever produced if the number of magazines, toiletries and the multitudinous makeup products are anything to go by.
Naturally, they know everything about laser treatment as well and whilst I got this to review, I gave it to the youngest daughter (25) as all the others have their own. There is a lot of collective knowledge about these things in my family for sure.
Being a bloke of the marine engineering kind, I’m not the target audience. Not many of us in the offshore construction industry could claim to be in touch with their feminine side. We do however have wives who do appreciate the finer things in life such as not looking like a baboon.
Anyway, having given this to daughter number three and recently managed to collect the tribe back together I put aside my more manly side and asked them all what they thought of IPL and this one in particular.
Firstly, it isn’t as good as going to a professional place and getting hair removal done by a pro using pro laser equipment it seems. My tribe all agree that getting laser treatment is pretty much permanent, but that home use IPL isn’t. In other words, this isn’t a one hit solution.
It does work. Yup, used over time it does work and it will remove hair in the place’s you ladies don’t want it. No, not my back which, admittedly isn’t as smooth as it was as a young chapAs for my man parts? Not convinced I want to zap them with a lightsabre although having cream rubbed in later might change my mind
The thing is, the household coven also point out that whilst this will remove hair, you will be on a mission to maintain it. The IPL job is something that must be part of your routine it seems, although not particular onerous.
The general view is that it’s not entirely painless although not as unpleasant as being waxed. Now, I’ve never been waxed, but the idea of having my chums down below slathered in hot wax then the hair being torn from them isn’t overly appealing. If I was a lady, I’d be using IPL for sure. Actually, I reckon I’d be heading off to a salon to be frank.
The unit comes with the small add on head to allow more difficult areas to be dealt with. Having had builders around doing some work I was tempted to get this back off my daughter and deal with the gorillas doing the brickwork who, like all builders have no concept of how grim a silverback’s crack of doom is, when it’s hanging out.
The blurb says it deals with 85% of hair quickly and if you do a good Google search and of course read the manual the fact is that lighter hair is harder to deal with. So, if you have hairy legs that look like they belong to a zebra then after three sessions you will still look like a zebra. Only one with alopecia. For you ladies with normal hair, then after a few weeks it will be under control if my crowd’s views are anything to go by.
Seems well made — which it should be for the wedge and the manufacturers name.
Overall, a good additional ladies tool for regular planned maintenance duties.
Takes the pain and hassle out of the task
This product is very clear about it’s target market – females between the age of 25 and 45 who wish to get rid of body hair. As a hairy male, I have to judge it by its affect on the target group, rather than upon myself!
I would say that this target group has reason to be well-pleased with such a product. It is neither painful nor difficult to use. The extras are all quite useful (apparently!) Much more care obviously needs to be taken with hair on softer skin, but the device is well suited to this. The manageable size of the tool makes it worth taking on holiday, although there are some larger ones that do more, but which really do need to stay at home.
This Philips IPL arrived nicely packaged, on taking it out of the box you have the main device and 2 attachments that fit on the end of the unit, one is for the body and has a larger opening area and the other is for the face and has a smaller opening area. The unit has 5 settings, which controls the intensity/strength of the light and is selected on the top via a button which lights up the 5 light indicator to show you the setting chosen. If you have not used one of these before be prepared for the bright flash of light, which did take me by surprise the first time I used it. Using the unit is easy and comfortable, simply place the unit on the area you want to treat, the light at the back of the unit will light up indicating that it is places on your skin correctly and then you will get the pulse of light when you press the trigger. To have continuous bursts of pulses just keep your finger on the trigger and move the unit to the next location. This treatment is not a quick win, you have to keep using the unit regularly for several weeks before you see any benefit, I have been using this product for about 8 weeks now and I have noticed a difference.
I only used it twice so far and the result is just amazing i have no hair on my armpits and hands, my legs are almost hair free just some patches of thin, light colored hair. My bikini lines are hair free which feel amazing My face is smooth overall i am super happy about my purchase it was the best buy ever.
Thank you Philips
I have waited 8 weeks to write the review of this product because the results are not intended to be immediate. I haven’t had much success with other hair removal products and was a bit concerned about buying the lumea due to the price, but I have been pleased with the results. I didn’t really notice any difference after the first 2 sessions. By the 3rd session my leg hair was more sparse and by the 4th treatment it was clear where I had missed a line of hair as the rest of my leg was almost hair free. I started underarm and bikini line later so results are not so good yet. It’s a little uncomfortable under my arms but soon over. Overall I am happy so far and would recommend.
This is a quality product – a solid feel in the hand and well made. It runs off the mains which is good — no need to plan use ahead and wait for charging. But. There is a long list of warnings & precautions explaining who should not use this machine. There is a range of suitable skin colours and a fairly narrow range of suitable hair colours. It is essential that the instructions – and warnings are read and fully understood — there are quite serious risks from mis-use.
The leaflet gives a guideline on how long it should take to do each body area, personally I found this to be a considerable underestimate. Maybe with more practice I’d get quicker — but considering how careful you have to be not to exposed skin to multiple flashes — I can’t imagine you’d want to be too cavalier about it.
I have very pale skin so have only tested the lower range of intensities — but even these I can feel as what I’d describe as ‘prickles’, I find it hard to imagine the higher intensities being described as ‘painless’! If it inadvertently catches an unshaved hair — the smell of burning hair gets quite strong.
I’d have to say It does work — hair regrowth was considerably less and took considerably longer (bearing in mind I’m usually a disposable razor fan!). Am I a convert to the Lumea — yes & no. It isn’t a permanent fix, so you do need to keep at it and quite frankly it’s quite a length process covering legs and underarms. Not to mention the fear of overuse of the laser, yes, those risks and warnings are — quite rightly — pretty scary. But it is good for facial hair removal — albeit incredibly pricy for such a small gai
This is the second device of its kind that I have reviewed, it is intended for a female market or target audience I think so I have been assisted in reviewing it by my mum, sister and a female friend.
I want to get a few general points out of the way first. There is a popular myth that this sort of lazer/light hair removal is permanent after a single use, it isnt, it requires a number of treatments over a series of weeks to be effective. With this model hair will remain gone for four or five weeks after a number of seasons but it will be finer or more sparse when it does return. The treatment DOES work.
The device does generate heat on the skin, it is not painful but it could produce a heat rash like effect, no blistering though (unless you should not be using it for some reason, and DO read the supporting instructions, safety guidance and use the safety features, it does feature a skin tone sensor). That is to say it is not the easier (in terms of free of sensation or more convenient) alternative to elipators or shaving or waxing but it is another, different, option to those and it may be a matter of personal preference between each of those.
Now, this device specifically. It comes with a number of attachments for different parts of the body, of these the three ladies assisting me with the review have said the leg attachment was of great use, making it easier to more quickly treat larger parts of the leg. On the other hand the attachment for the face they did not rate as much (of the three no one really had thick or dark hair on the sides of face, back of neck, upper lip or chin which could be treatment or targetted airs for others, so that is a factor to consider), they did say they definitely would not use this for shaping eye brows for instance.
This is a heavier, bulkier device to the one other which I have reviewed, each of those who used it noticed that and I noticed it unboxing this device. I suspect it would put a bit more of a strain on the wrist if you are using it for a longer time, such as a full body treatment and it does require you to hold it differently if you are using it for self-treatment too. Personally, I think the other “phaser” design, as opposed to this heavier, bulkier “gun” design is easier to hold and use but that could be simply because it resembles epilators, shavers and other devices of that kind. It does mean that it is much larger when transporting it, dont get me wrong it is not as large as a hair dryer (and there are compact, travel hair dryers which would be smaller) but it is an aspect of the device.
The device does seem to be of a quality build, from good materials and I expect it will last a long time with frequent use, without any drop in functionality or the treatments it can provide. The results that I have seen from this treatment with a number of people would lead me to recommend it as all those using it have said it is on a par with treatments available from clinics or spas. There is a very good app which is available for download and lots of very good information available from Philips website to consider before you buy or use as a form of customer support when you own this. It can be operated without this but it is a plus when using it for best results.
Really pleased with the performance of this product. It does everything it has promised in terms of hair removal and the time between treatments is great. It takes at least 6 weeks before I start to feel any sort of regrowth so very pleased and this is useful before holidays and trips. However, the loss of a star is purely down to the pain and effort that go into it. Nowhere does it state that there is significant pain to the treatments or that it will take literally hours to complete hair removal on some larger areas. It’s still worth it, but it does make it a bit of a commitment.
As requested by Philip we have used this for 8 weeks before reviewing.
First, it works best on fair skin with dark hair; the more the contrast the better it will work.
It’s easy to use and not uncomfortable, surely better than waxing.
After the first treatment very few hairs grow again.
After the second one 2 weeks later, still some coming, but the difference is noticeable.
After third treatment 99% of hair is gone.
On my husband’s back the hair is a bit more persistent, so possibly more treatments are required, however, there is a big difference from before.
Hopefully the days of waxing are over.
Worth the expensive price as it’s easier to use, better built and more effective than other IPL and similar I’ve used and tested.
5 stars
I have tried a couple of IPL devices in the past with my last one also being a Philips Lumea and having tried a different brand prior to that I can confirm that the Philips ones really are worth investing in.
This model is a corded device and whilst very similar to my older model it is smaller and does feel lighter. You do need to use IPL’s more regularly at first and then I have managed around 4 weeks between uses but I believe some do manage longer. It isn’t a painless way to remove hair as you do feel a little sting but if I was to choose between waxing, epilating and using an IPL then the IPL would win hands down. You do need to keep up the routine when you first start to use it and it can be a bit time consuming if doing a larger area such as your legs which is one of the reasons I have dipped in and out of IPL use when the time constraints of being a Mum and working have meant it has been easier to just shave so I’m by no means an IPL angel.
There are lots of review already talking about skin type, hair colour and medical reasons why you may not be able to us an IPL and so I won’t go through some of them in this review as the information is also available on Philips website but if you are thinking of investing in an IPL then I would say Philips is the brand to choose just from past use with another brand.
I’ve used a Philips Lumea before, me for my back and shoulders and the wife for her legs, we found it really easy to use, quite a relaxing sensation when you get used to it. Over a long period of time the regrowth is less and I think if I really had the discipline to remember to keep up to it I may be hair free by now.
My only criticism of the previous model I tried was that you could not use it on hard to reach places, the full surface had to be contact with the skin before the light pulse could be activated.
Using this new updated model it arrived in the same fantastic packaging you would expect from Philips, the instructions are really clear and simple to use, this is important when it comes to getting the setting correct for your skin tone.
This new model is a little smaller and easier to handle, the noise of the light pulse seems a little less intense, but the results and speed of use have been equally impressive.
My experience of using this has been as a previous user, I must stress that if you are using it for the first time its important to read the instructions and maybe trial on a test area of skin before getting carried away with use.
The 85% reduction after three treatments is a bold boast, while I can see results its not been quite that impressive, I think if I kept up to it every 4 weeks results would be better, but its so easy to forget.
I would recommend this device, once you are over the price tag and start seeing results you’ll be glad to see the back of regular shaving.
I love the Philips Lumea – what an amazing gadget for those of us who spend an inordinate amount of time throughout our lives waxing, shaving, epilating etc! I realise that this is an expensive item but, after using it for a couple of months, I can’t imagine going back to my old methods and, in terms of waste, this one gadget should, over the years, save numerous razors, wax papers etc etc from going to landfill.
There are a lot of contra-indications, (largely based on hair and skin colour), for the use of this IPL device so please do read the information provided by Philips before deciding if you should give it a go. I like the fact that it has a built in skin tone sensor for extra safety – that just provides a little extra peace of mind. Luckily, my hair and skin colour are fine for use with this device so I was able to proceed.
Initially you are advised to treat the areas every 2 weeks. It is a little time consuming to treat all of the areas but, if you consider that this is only once every 2 weeks, (with probably a bit of shaving etc in between for a start), then it isn’t too bad. I found that, after just a couple of treatments, there was already substantially less hair growth – amazing! After a few more sessions there is a very noticeable reduction in hair so I am hopeful that with a few more sessions I will be largely hair-growth free.
This version of the Lumea is corded, which I don’t have a problem with as the cord is fairly lengthy. I believe that there are versions, however, that are cordless if that is preferable.
Overall I am really, really impressed by this device. The handy little app reminds me when I should re-treat – great because I’m not generally the most organised. I can’t wait to see what a few more months brings – I have high hopes for pretty much permanently hair-free areas.
A great se
What a fab set! An ipl machine and a facial cleansing brush!
The ipl machine is great. It’s so easy to use and doesn’t hurt. You just feel a warmth. It’s important to use the tight setting for your skin tone though. After a few uses I can tell my hair growth is slowing. It’s easy to hold in the hand and not awkward to use. It’s fairly small so easy to store.
The cleansing brush is a mini version of the usual one you see but the smallness is only the main body. The brush head is the usual size and it works great with a foaming cleanser to give a deep clean.
If you want both items then this is a good bargain.
An absolutely fabulous Philips Lumea IPL system was received for review. Please note this comes complete with an attachment for use on the face and a gorgeous micro trimmer complete with guide for use on one’s face and eyebrows. Of course Philips needs no introduction in the field of consumer electronics and they regularly seem to bring to the market advanced and capable devices that look gorgeous, work well and are reasonably/competitively priced. It’s almost as if they have turned leading edge science into an art form! My wife has been using this for the past few weeks and here are some thoughts.
The Lumea comes with a comprehensive and clearly set out manual, guide how to use the device and a long list of precautions and contraindications. It’s a good idea to read this through a couple of times as clearly the device is not suitable for all skin types, all skin areas, those on certain tablets, those with certain diseases and skin problems or who have an unsuitable skin tone.
This being said, for the vast majority this is eminently easy to use and is suitable for very efficient and long-lasting control of unwanted body hair. I have followed the programme as advised over 6 weeks plus and results are very impressive. Please note, there is no hurry, take your time and you will avoid, most likely, any complications, skin irritation and discomfort and just have smooth, hair-free skin. After a little acclimatisation it’s easy to develop and roll/slide and click action that makes the coverage of large areas possible. There is also an App to give further advice and promote a tailor-made programme of hair removal. By and large in use the device is painless, occasionally at the higher settings I experience a tingling in my skin but this is short lived and passes quickly. I have had no other side effects at all.
The kit includes an attachment for use on one’s face and this also works well. Once again I took my time and built up the treatment slowly with good results.
The micro-trimmer is also excellent and works well although I have not used it on my eyebrows.
Overall this is a fabulous device that is easy, comfortable and safe to use. It’s the sort of thing that not that many years ago one would pay a fortune at a health and beauty clinic in order to achieve exactly the same results that one can experience with a little patience in one’s own home. Of course the device is not cheap in terms of initial purchase, but I would argue that on a long-term view it is very cost effective and will allow the user to permanently control unwanted body hair with excellent cosmetic and aesthetic results.
With thanks to Vine, Philips and, a delighted spouse, Frankie.
Effective
Been using this for 6 weeks and am pleased with the results. It has taken a while to get used to using the system, but if you follow the instructions it is going to take a while. A lovely package. Only drawback is the time it takes to be really effective.
Works but requires perseverance
This is an expensive hair removal device by PHILIPS. It works by harnessing intense light based technology and directs pulses of light at the hair root to break the natural cycle of hair regrowth. It is said by the manufacturer to bring about an 85% reduction in hair growth after just 3 treatments. The high intensity lamp has a working life of about 20 years. The device is mains operated and comes with a 2 pin plug like a mains electric razor. It has 2 separate heads for facial and general body use. The device is not suitable for everyone and contraindications like skin and hair colour can be scrutinised on the website prior to purchase. My wife has been using this device for just over a month – 6 treatments in total. She is not very hairy to begin with but is beginning to notice a difference on her legs which she says are much smoother. She intends to continue with twice monthly treatments to try to achieve permanently silky smooth legs. Definitely worth a shot if you can afford it.
The Philips SC1997/00 is a corded IPL hair removal device that comes with a compact trimmer and has a large 4mm exit window attachment for use on the legs and a smaller 2mm attachment for use on bikini line/armpits/face (its not suitable for use on eyebrows)
I would recommend that anyone thinking of purchasing this device visit the Philips website first to download and read the user manual before buying as there are a number of skin types and medical disorders that make IPL treatment unsuitable and well written, detailed advice is given in the user manual.
I really like this device. I’ve been using a previous model for quite a while now and this one is significantly better in my opinion; its smaller and weighs nearly 200g less than my previous model so is far easier to handle (see uploaded photo – this model is on the left ). Unlike some previous models this one can only be used corded and comes with a 2 metre lead. I always used mine corded anyway as the recharge between flashes was faster when plugged in so I’m not really seeing that as a negative.
I’ll be honest IPL treatment isn’t a quick fix, to achieve lengthy periods of ‘hair-free’ skin requires several sessions, every other week initially and once achieved you still need to continue with top-up sessions every few weeks. Making the time is worth it to me, being able to rely on not having to shave my legs, think about my bikini line or armpits in the summer or when on holiday is great. Times between continuous top-up sessions differ from person to person as our hair grows at different rates, but I find if I do a ‘top-up session’ once every 6 weeks it keeps the areas I use it on hair free.
This IPL device is easy to use, the manufacturer does recommend that you do a skin test first. After shaving/waxing/epilating the area, clip on the appropriate attachment, select your chosen intensity and after placing on the area you are treating once the white ‘ready light’ comes on press the flash button. You then move on to the adjacent area before doing the same again. The ‘flash ready’ light won’t come on if you don’t get a good contact with the skin and initially you may need to adjust the angle, once familiar with using the device you obviously get better and a sessions will be a lot quicker too. Note: This model has a built in safety sensor if the ‘ready light’ flashes orange the sensor has detected that the skin tone on the area you’re using the device is too dark.
Pain – that dreaded word! You will feel the zap when it flashes. We’re all different and obviously some do feel it more than others. I can only speak for myself but I wouldn’t say its painful, noticeable yes – certainly in the first few sessions but these days I hardly even notice it. The manufacturer recommends that if you find it uncomfortable you should reduce the level of intensity you’re using.
The included hair trimmer that comes with this model is a slim compact trimmer and comes complete with battery, trimmer attachment (2mm or 4mm length available) and a cleaning brush. Its easy to use and the tiny blade makes it ideal for hard to shave areas or even for shaping.
What method of hair removal we use is a very personal choice but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this Philips IPL device, its not the cheapest but it works and it works really well. It does take time especially with the initial 2 weekly sessions but once past those I find giving up an hour of my time every 6 weeks well worth the benefits.
Another great IPL device from Philips
This Philips Lumea Advanced IPL Hair Removal Device is the latest in a long line of Philips IPL Hair Removal Devices so they know what they’re doing by now and it shows through in the results.
IPL in the early days was a bit hit or miss, at least the ones we tested were. In the last 3-4 years, though, it’s really come a long way and Philips have been the ones we’ve preferred. The way they work is by Intense Pulsed Light on hair follicles to kill them off so they stop regrowing. It’s obviously not as quickly as that, though, you’ll need to spend a good 6 months to show some proper results. That said, you can usually see some signs of it working over just a few months with bi-weekly treatments.
First, though, you really do need to check for skin and hair type to ensure that the device is safe for you. Amazon’s page already has a comprehensive guide on this.
It’s getting a little more difficult to review these as my wife has been using the systems for a while and has less and less hair growth now but as I said, it takes many years to fully disappear and new devices like this are getting far better, so it’s certainly easy to make a comparison.
The results from this latest IPL device were great, far better than the earlier models and a little better than last year’s one. It’s also safer, with a patch test being done by the machine to ensure skin colour on the area you’re testing is safe. The catchment area is slightly larger on the main head, too, making it easier to cover an area faster and you also get a smaller head for the face and other small areas.
The other new feature is the app which helps schedule treatments and gives you tips. It’s well written software and certainly handy but is standalone, not linked to the device.
Overall, then, if you’re new to IPL hair removal this is the perfect way to start and if you’re previous device has run out of flashes then I’d recommend this as the next step up.
Impressive bit of ki
The Lumea is a long-term project to reduce hair regrowth. You initially shave and then apply the Lumea to the same area. It has a head for the face and one for the other body parts. It fires pulses of light which are a bit shocking at first but are not painful. You allow windows for different parts of the body and keep repeating the process. My wife has white skin and dark hair and has taken well to it and there have been no adverse effects. So far there has been very little hair regrowth. You do have to invest a bit of time up front to get the most out of this gadget but it should save you long-term. It’s an expensive device, but if you can afford it, you will probably be pleased with it.
My friend couldn’t be happier with this gift and won’t stop going on about it. They have sensitive skin and swears it’s the best hair removal system they’ve ever tried and have convinced their families to give it a try to.
Noticeable effec
This Philips Lumea Advanced Hair Removal Device generally looks and feels well made. Included in the pack you get a body attachment for use below the neckline; face attachment for use below the eyes; storage pouch; power adapter (24V/1500mA); cleaning cloth and user manual. There’s also a supporting Lumea app for IOS/Android which is handy and manages the usage of the device, by letting you know when the next session is due etc.
Before buying this device you should check that your skin type is appropriate. Philips state that you’ll see noticeable results after three applications, in fact even after a couple uses the results are obvious. I’ve used this on one leg but not on a small part of the other and the difference is clear plus the treated hair doesn’t seem to regrow at a noticeable rate. The same applies to my face. The area you can cover at one time using the device and attachments is larger than many other hair removal devices I’ve used but very precise.
In terms of usability this Philips device scores well it’s easy to operate and what I like is that it doesn’t emit an obvious burning smell like some other popular hair removal devices. In addition, there’s virtually no sensation as the device does its job, you’re aware of the pulsating light but that’s really it.
As I’ve said the unit looks and feels well made although you’d expect that at the price, I say this with the exception of the rather feeble fabric case and ill-fitting cover on the included VisaPure Mini Facial Cleansing Brush. The disadvantage of this device is that it isn’t cordless unlike some other hair removal devices. Although the power cord is long enough for ease of use, oddly, Philips have fitted a bathroom type 2 pin plug rather than a UK square pin version..
In summary, so far, this is an effective, premium product with a few shortcomings and a fairly high price tag although the actual results achieved so far seem to justify the investment. I’ll update this review as my experience develops.
The Lumea Advanced IPL hair removal device is another well put together quality product from Philips and which also comes with a 2 year warranty. Even better, there are no disposable or replacement parts you need to buy so once purchased the operating costs are just the amount of electricity you use.
Firstly it is important to point out that this device is not suitable for everyone. There are quite a few exclusions for skin and hair type. If you are not sure and before you decide to make a purchase check out the Philips website. If you are one of those that finds themselves excluded due to skin or hair colour don’t think ‘oh I’ll give it a go’ because it won’t work and you’ll get frustrated. You have been warned.
I’d also advise you to contact Philips because there are a number of medical issues and medication that would also exclude you from using this product. Exclusions run into two pages. Bleeding gums or varicose veins? It’s not for you. Consult your doctor if you have freckles, scars or moles too. Twelve pages of safety warnings!
I’d also like to point out that the product is not a one treatment magic wand, you will need to persevere as the instructions direct you to.
It can be effective on most areas of the body and comes with an integrated filter for those more sensitive areas. It has a skin tone sensor and if it detects that your skin is too dark it will stop working.
Before use you will need to get that razor out and then you need to test a patch of skin.
It claims that it will work and be safe on those more sensitive parts and I will agree that this has been my experience. Due to the large 4cm treatment window it is quick to cover a wide area.
I have not been convinced that there is an 85% reduction after three treatments, it takes a little longer than that, I’d say an average of 5 and don’t forget that you will have to persevere.
The treatment schedule is to start with one treatment every two weeks for four to five weeks and once that is out of the way a touch up treatment every 4-8 weeks is recommended. Schedule around 20 minutes for a treatment.
You may get a little skin irritation at first but it’s not a deal breaker as it doesn’t last long. Let the device decide what your skin tone is, do not under any circumstances use a higher light intensity as you could end up with burns or skin discolouration, infection or blistering. Be sensible and the product will do the job.
Does it work? Actually it does, I am beginning to see real progress and if used properly there should be no problems.
It is a well made product with a good warranty and for the right skin and hair type it will work well. It is not however an instant hair removal tool, you will need to schedule its use into your bi-monthly beauty regime. Remember, you will need to persevere to get that silky smooth look.
I’m in two minds as to whether it is good value, but it is a premium product at a premium price.
Please note Philips technical team have confirmed this is an updated version of SC1997/00. It should therefore say SC1997/00 on your model number. I’ve been trying to confirm with them whether it does indeed also treat hair which is pulled from the root as none of the older models do this (actually no other IPL device does this).
**Tested on light olive skin which tans very easily & black hairs.
Although I’ve used many different models of Philips Lumea over the years (older models), I still used this latest model for two sessions (once every 2 weeks) on 2 & 3 setting, & I’ve noticed much improvement in reduction of hair growth. Thus I have come to the conclusion that the performance of thus latest model is better & has most probably been improved by Philips. As advised by Lumea app, first 2 sessions is every 2 weeks, then after 6 weeks.
Firstly, this is supposed to be the upgraded & only product of its type that can laser hairs which are pulled from the roots, the previous models & any other model you buy on the market ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO LASER HAIRS WHICH HAVE ROOTS & HAVE GROWN FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS & THEN CUT BY RAZOR. Thus, this product is unique to the manufacturer.
Features of this product are basic though, comes with 2 attachments (one small & one large) as a previous model has skin sensor detector (you press a button to determine which number to use automatically) but you have to put the number in manually in this one).
However a major improvement on this model is that it’s much more compact & lighter, making my arms less tired during use.
Further, this can only used corded (ie. it’s not cordless). Mine is slightly loose & comes out which could be )
Another really useful feature is the Pen Trimmer which is an electrical mini Shaver, very useful for small areas, or hairs you’ve missed while shaving. It uses 2 AAA batteries. I think Philips should sell this separately. If you miss hairs while shaving (which happens a lot as in the shower you can’t always see), it burns while lasering & is not good.
Also, this is not as easy to use on ‘unrven’ parts such as elbows, fingers etc whereas previous models were better. If the sensor is not on COMPLETELY flat surface, it takes several attempts to get a zap. This is not good because obviously one doesn’t always have completely flat surfaces on the body. Elbows, knees, other areas can be uneven.thus could be a product fault but when I get a replacement modem. UPDATE: they’ve sent a replacement & it works much better although still is a bit fiddly.
NOTE: Philips not only have a 100 day money back guarantee, in the product description it also says 2 year GLOBAL WARRANTY. so please bear this in mind if you find a faulty one as some of them can be, but such as they dint zap properly, you have to keep pressing several times to get a beep, it is unreliable (sometimes zaps, sometimes not etc). I highly advise to contact them as they will look into it.
Please note the following when using this IPL device:
_IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AS YOU DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE YOUR SKIN
-first 4-5 treatments are bi-weekly
-hairs can be waxed, shaved, tweezed prior to use but skin should be completely hair free
-can be used on face (BELOW CHEEKBONES ONLY), bikini, legs, arms, armpits, or anywhere else really but NOT AROUND THE EYES, EYEBROWS
-IF SUNBATHING, DO NOT USE FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS AFTER OR IF YOU HAVE LASERED & SKIN IS EXPOSED TO THE SUN, WEAR SPF 50 FOR 48 HOURS
PLEASE NOTE PHILIPS ARE SAYING THIS IS AN UPDATED VERSION OF SC1997/00. IF YOU CHECK YOUR SERIAL NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE HANDLE, IT’LL NOT SAY BRI921/00 WHICH IS THIS DEVICE BUT SC1997/00.
I’m most disappointed with philips customer services, they used to be good but I don’t commend them anymore. The only ones who have been very helpful, professional (not telling me to “you take care of yourself” at the end of the call which I consider unprofessional, rude & personal) were based in Greece (you’d tell from their accent).
Very effective after only 5 uses, not painful or noisy
AFter only 5 times I noticed a mark improvement under my armpits and legs, I don’t see any black hairs or any hairs now. Not painful to do either even on highest setting (5) and very quick response, only takes a short while to do and saves getting it done professionally you can do it very easily with this its the same thing only DIY so you have a lot of money. You have to keep doing it to the recommended time which is 8 weeks.
Very decent product and results - let's see if it keeps performing!
The Lumea is impressive from the moment you pick it up – it looks cool and sits comfortably in the hand, and includes a facial massage cleanser and travel bag. And even from the first use I started to notice a difference in some of my thicker body hair. From how I understand it, the system works by using light pulses to relax follicles (thus eradicating hair) and to suppress hair regrowth. The more you use it (to a prescribed programme – not too time intensive), the less hair grows back and the less often you have to do treatments. And there are varying ‘windows’ to measure the treated areas as you go, and make sure your skin isn’t damaged. Plus you can even use it on sensitive skin on the face and underarms – exactly what I want! Don’t get me wrong, it’s not totally intuitive to start using (case in point: the makers think you need an app to track when you use it and figure out your optimum usage times). And don’t forget to make sure that your hair colour and skin tone are within the acceptable range before you make the commitment. But really the hassles have been pretty minor for the results I’ve had so far – I’ve had less regrowth and much fewer rogue dark chin hairs. I can’t wait to see how the progress continue, when I can maybe go much longer between uses.
Hair removal can be messy, painful and quite ineffective at times. Using a razor, either traditional with foam- or electric, doesn’t offer the best results and hair can grow back quickly. The Philips IPL system has been around for a good few years and this is the latest model.
Philips is a well established brand and have many years of expertise in the home electronic sector. This product is basically a laser hair removal system. It works by emitting a pulsing laser whilst you run the device over your skin, it all sounds very sci-fi, but the results are pretty amazing. Instead of just shaving off hairs, the laser actually lifts the hairs out of your skin. The result is much more effective hair removal and less regrowth. This product is corded; less practical but I actually prefer this as you don’t need to worry about recharging or battery life issues. Simply glide over your skin, and face, and it quickly removes hairs, giving noticeably better results than standard shaving alone. There is a slight tingling sensation but really it’s pain free so please do not worry about this aspect.
Being the latest model there are some great additional features here. Philips have eradicated the need for replacement laser cartridges, the one supplied is claimed to last for 20 years. There is also a Lumea app, easy to use and well designed which lets you keep track of your hair removal schedule. Included with this product is a small facial hair tool which combats those small hard to reach areas, such as round the ears and lips. It’s effective but nowhere near as good as the main IPL unit. Think of it as a touch up and not much more. What isn’t included is any real carry case which I found surprising and disappointing. If you wanted to take this away with you, you are left to chuck it all in a small bag which is less than ideal considering the price you pay for the product
There are similar products available from other manufacturers, some are slightly cheaper. I do firmly believe it’s worth paying the extra for this model though. The build quality is exceptional and other manufacturers still require replacement cartridges which works out to be even more expensive. Whilst the Philips IPL may be a bit more expensive initially, it works out much better value overall. When you think of how much a hair removal session at a salon is, this pays for itself quite quickly and I have found most salons use a similar laser removal system, so it makes a lot of sense to be able to do this at home when you want to without the need to book appointments etc.
Overall, this is really the best hair removal system out there. It’s quick, effective and it’s from Philips so you can count on the product to last. One thing I would point out is that although it works on the vast majority of skin types, not all. So I would strongly recommend checking the Philips Lumea website to ensure your skin and hair type is covered
This is an amazing piece of kit for hair removal. It actually weakens the hair roots so that after time they don’t grow back! It’s not effective for blonde hair or dark skin though. Also, it’s not pain free and feels like elastic bands being pinged on your skin when the hairs are being zapped. It does work brilliantly on my dark hair/light skin combination. Quite a pricey outlay initially but compared to salon treatment prices it will soon pay for itself.
Effective Corded Hair Removal
The most important advice I can give a potential buyer of this Lumea is to ensure it will work for your skin type before you buy. This kind of system does not suit everyone-if your natural hair colour is red, grey or blonde or if your skin is a deeper brown or black then the Lumea is not recommended. Most other skin pigmentation are compatible, but given this device uses a laser-like light it is imperative that the instructions are followed to the letter to avoid damage and irritation.
Having said all this, this Lumea system does do what it promises namely to remove hair completely by drawing each strand out from the root by the application of a short burst of intense light and not simply cutting off the top as with razors or lady shavers, Therefore after a fairly long session using it, you can expect at least a couple of months of smoothness without re-growth. You will find that you use the device more at the beginning and as the process is repeated over the course of a year you find that your hair growback is reduced by up to three quarters.
The main device which looks like a space gun has two separate heads-one for the face and the other for the body . Additionally you get a face massage head which can be used to compliment the hair removal. However this is a simple single speed device with one type of bristles, not a complex exfoliator such as you find on the market these days.
My main issue with this model is that it is corded and has a two pin plug which has to plugged into an adapter which in turns needs to be plugged into a conventional electrical socket. This does mean you don’t have to wait around for it to charge, but restricts you movement as you use it and might be an issue if you are using it whilst travelling. Talking of which you do get a drawstring travel bag which is a handy extra.
At the end of the day a device like this is judged on if it does remove hair effectively-this system certainly does that if you use it carefully and once you get used to the sudden flashes of intense light that are its essential feature. Recommended.

My other half is one of those ladies who hates shaving her legs due to nicks and refuses to wax because she hates the pain aspect so to find something that promises not only long term results but pain free really ticks the boxes for her. It was easy to use and after a fair few treatments she saw less hair on her legs.
All round it is a good item and whilst its pricey, if you think of how much you’d have to pay for a daily treatment to help deal with problem hairs then it will pay for itself in no time at all. All round, she’s very happy and will hopefully revisit after a few more weeks treatment to report as to how well its still working and how well the reduction actually is.
Works very well, but sadly not suitable for folks with darker ski
My wife has had another Philips Lumea hair removal contraption (the Prestige SC2006/11) for several years and has found it works well, so she was interested to try this newer model. The fact it comes with a mini facial cleanser is a bonus and she reckons that is pretty effective too.
There’s no point in me describing how it works here as there are comprehensive instructions included. You need to make sure you follow them and stick to the times given. There are two different ‘windows’, one for the face, the other for the body.
It has a skin tone sensor built-in for safety, but the box itself shows (in colour) which tones it works on and also which body hair colours it can and can’t deal with. I’m afraid if you have cream coloured, grey or ginger hair, you’re stuck with the somewhat cheaper products from Mr Bic!
Mrs JC’s opinion is this one (it’s cordless, incidentally) works as well as her earlier model but so far, she can’t tell any difference in performance between them. Given how happy she’s been with the earlier one, that’s actually rather reassuring and bodes well for this version.
These things are a lot of money, but if you’re keen to minimise hair growth and can afford one, from my wife’s experience, they work very well and I’m happy to recommend them to you.
All that’s needed now is the new Philips Lumea “X1000 Hair Regrowth” version, due out shortly (ho ho), which chaps like me can use to promote new hair growth on our shiny heads.
PS. “Darling, can I borrow the facial cleanser to clean my alloy wheels please…?”
This is a crazy good bit of kit. Philips always know their target market, and always release a top product to cater for them.
The light that emits and pulses from the product is the key to preventing hair growing back. It can be used on all sensitive areas such as under arms, bikini line and even above the lip. The epilator is a bit big when holding it, but not so much so that it’s an issue to use. A few goes over each area over a period of days, should slowly have the desired effect. This really is incredible, and well worth the price.
The package is well presented and included is the device itself is a hand held affair, charger, body and face adaptors and a little bag to hold it all. I was somewhat disappointed with the bag as I don’t feel it offers enough protection for such and expensive device with delicate attachments and would have liked to have seen a semi rigid case of some sorts.
Use is very straightforward. As I understand the hair has to be in the `growth’ stage and so I shaved the rear of my upper arms in order to use it during it’s growth stage. I particularly like to keep on top of my back and upper arms.
It is simply a case then of selecting the appropriate intensity for your hair/skin colour and away you go. In use the sensation was quite tingly for me but not uncomfortable.
The included info guides you through this process and the correct selection etc but if unsure I would suggest starting off on a lower setting to see how you react.
In use there was some light bleed so I investigated the need for googles. Although you don’t need them in use they may be handy to reassure or help those particularly sensitive to flashes of light such as migraine sufferers etc.
I am both surprised and encouraged by the results that quite frankly I was sceptical of. After several months I can say it has definitely reduced hair regrowth and what does regrow is much thinner and lighter. I am grateful for the included bikini line lens so that I can tackle more delicate areas.
I am happy to report that it has had a positive effect over the last few months. Hair has started to regrow but it is much lighter and I am confident in a few more sessions this will reduce further. My wife has used it on her underarms and really noticed a lessening in regrowth and what does regrow is much lighte
Reliable IPL system from a company I trus
This model is the SC1999 Lumea Prestige minus the bikini light window (as with the Lumea Prestige) but with a mini facial cleanser added. The other thing to know is that Lumea isn’t for everyone. Dark skins types, certain hair colours, and certain medical conditions mean this is a no-no, but there is information about this at the start of the manual and on the Philips website. If Lumea is okay for you, it’s quite easy to use.
We’ve tried a few hair removal methods and gadgets over the years, including our all-time favourite the Philips Ladyshave wet-dry model. At last we are trying the latest version of Philips IPL hair removal system. Goodness me, what a revelation and revolution this is!
What you get in the box is packed into several layers, so keep digging to get everything out. On the top you’ll find the Lumea itself, which looks like a Star Trek weapon, an alternate light window (there’s one for face and one for everywhere else) and mains adapter. At the bottom of the box is the paperwork, cleaning cloth, and handy zip-up storage bag.
It’s easy to use, and not at all painful. Painless hair removal, and at home! Hair removal happens after repeated uses of the Lumea, so that after 4-5 goes the hair has mostly fallen out. Extra applications every 4-5 weeks will maintain the hair removal.
The mini facial cleanser is a nice addition, usually an item costing about 40 separately. It works well and, being waterproof, is handy for cleansing skin while in the shower.
There are many IPL hair removal systems out there, many of them costing much less than this one. Personally, when it comes to skin treatments like this, I wouldn’t dabble with brands I’ve never heard of. I feel comfortable with Philips products, and would pay a bit more for peace of mind and good product support. The Lumea is a great item. Easy to use and very effective given a little time. I would just like to have seen the bikini window included.
This is my second Lumea, after having the first one for the best part of a decade. While the basic function of it remains the same, there have certainly been some enhancements. For example the sound is a little more muted, and the rose-metal styling of it is a bit classier and makes it feel less like a hospital treatment and more like a luxury home beauty device. I think it’s marginally lighter (haven’t actually weighed it for comparison) but the build quality still seems fine. The addition of the skin tone sensor as a safety feature is certainly a plus as well.
After being cynical about it years ago, my old Lumea showed me that IPL does work, and first impressions are that this new model, working on exactly the same principle and probably the same wavelengths and light intensities (as far as I can tell), will be just as good but not better. However IPL is not without its pain or its problems. Working with intense targeted heat, it really can sting quite a lot, even when you’ve been using it regularly and everything is normal. The idea that IPL is the pain-free (or far less painful) alternative to waxing or shaving is definitely a myth, and the promotional pictures showing women using their Lumea and smiling carefree is a bit of a mis-sell. This thing stings initially, and on some body parts there will be redness and a little bit of swelling as well, akin to a *very* slight heat abrasion or burn. However, I don’t want to go too far the other way and suggest that this is really painful or dangerous- I wouldn’t say that. I just have to dispel any implication that it’s “pain free”.
Also on my skin the length of time you get hair-free legs after IPL doesn’t quite live up to the marketing promises, predictably enough. It’s definitely more long-term effective than waxing, making it an ideal treatment to use on the run-up to a holiday so you can go hair-free throughout the holiday without needing to go through it again, but I’ve never been able to get close to the “8 weeks hair free” promised. 3 or 4 weeks, maybe. Also on the subject of holidays, bear in mind the warnings that you shouldn’t use IPL if you’ve got a tan- that will be kind of a big deal if you’re a regular sunbather. There are plenty of other circumstances in which you shouldn’t use it- not just skin tone but for people with sensitive skin, on certain types of medication, and so on.
Despite being accustomed to IPL now I was still a little nervous about using it on my face, but have given it a go in the interests of testing. The more targeted attachment for the face makes this possible and feels like you can target it reasonably well, but it’s not quite small enough to target a specific mole or problem area all that precisely, so facially I think I’m more likely to give it a miss and stick to the legs and underarms. Luckily the compact pen trimmer included in this particular pack does a good job on my small facial mole, so that fills the gap nicely. The trimmer is smart-looking but fairly basic- it wouldn’t retail for very much in its own right, but it is a perfectly decent, Philips-quality shaving device.
IPL generally won’t be for everybody- if you search online (not always recommended for anything health-related) then you’ll certainly find a horror story if you look hard enough- or some scaremongering, depending on how you look at it. But if you’re wanting to seriously invest in a beauty item that’s going to keep you hair-free for longer- albeit not quite as long as advertised, not quickly, and not painlessly- then this Philips is a sensible choice. They’ve been producing Lumea for years and it’s a device you can rely on.
Easy hair removal
The Philips BR1922 Lumea is a corded IPL device, which means that it lacks some of the portability in use of the cordless models but you do not need to worry about periodic charging to maintain a battery.
* In the box
The Lumea comes with two attachments: body and face; the body attachment is already in place on arrival. The facial attachment has a smaller window and an extra filter. These are easy to change (a simple push on/pull off) and the one not in use can be stored in the bag.
There is a soft, pull-cord bag that is just large enough to hold the Lumea, power lead (3 pin UK plug) and attachments; it is adequate but could have been better given the RRP of the item. It is hidden at the very bottom of the box under a piece of card, so don’t miss it.
* Health, skin and hair colour warnings
As with all previous Lumea devices, there is a long list of warnings and it is concerning that the health issues that could render this unsuitable for use are not currently listed on the product page with the exception of the skin and hair colour guide. I have attached (or am in the process of attaching) photographs from the manual that list some of the things that render this unsuitable for the user (e.g. diabetes, varicose veins, chemotherapy) but would also urge anyone considering a purchase to consult the Philips website to check the source information. Use could exacerbate pre-existing conditions, cause complications such as burns or, at best, the process just won’t work.
As well as checking you don’t have medical conditions that will prevent use, you also need to check your skin and hair colour against a chart (this is on the product page). Basically, the darker your skin and the lighter your hair colour, the less effective this method of hair removal will be and it won’t work at all on grey, white or red hair.
* How it works
The Lumea is targeting the root of the hair to prevent fast regrowth and only works when the hair in question is growing, which means results will be patchy in the initial phase but do bear with it; once you have continued for a while, you should see a difference. I have used an earlier version of the Lumea for a few years and am in the maintenance phase, which means any hair growth is soft, very sparse and hardly noticeable. It doesn’t offer permanent hair removal but the frequency of treatments reduces significantly the longer you use this and you should see results within a few weeks on soft hairs; thicker hair will take longer to treat.
* Preparation
As with most things in life, preparation is the key and you need to remove the hair you wish to treat prior to starting. This feels counter intuitive but it eliminates the potential smell of burnt hair, makes it less messy and more effective. Unlike previous guidance, Philips now state you can epilate or wax as well as shave to remove hair before using the Lumea, albeit you need to wait for 24 hours after waxing.
* Consumables
One thing to bear in mind is the lamp cannot be replaced, although it has a long-life expectancy (the lamp is expected to last one user for 20 years), backed up by a 2-year manufacturer warranty. This also means that you do not need to concern yourself with replacement lamps.
* Summing up the pros and cons:
Pros
* Offers long term (not permanent) hair removal that is painless.
* Corded use so it is always ready to use.
* Variable intensity settings to cater for varied skin tone/sensitivity on different areas of the body.
* Includes a sensor that prevents use on too high a setting for the skin tone.
* Quick lamp recharge time.
* Lamp cannot be replaced, so there are no costly consumables in use.
* Good balanced weight in the hand and comfortable to grip. It isn’t too heavy.
* Controls are simple and easy to use.
* Two attachments, one for body and one for face.
* Storage pouch supplied so you can keep everything together.
Cons
* Lamp cannot be replaced; once it’s gone, the device can no longer be used.
* Existing medical conditions may prevent use, as could skin and hair colour.
With this model you also get a brilliant facial cleanser machine. I thought this might be a bit gimmicky but actually it’s really good and works well to brighten and exfoliate your skin.
Being the latest model there are some great additional features here. Philips have eradicated the need for replacement laser cartridges, the one supplied is claimed to last for 20 years. There is also a Lumea app, easy to use and well designed which lets you keep track of your hair removal schedule.
So far, so grea
I gave this to my sister and this was her view:
I’m really pleased to have this as I’ve replaced another model similar to this, but not where near as effective.
This device does not immediately remove your hair, but does so over time and it reduces regrowth and therefore, requires long term use for full effect. I’ve not had it long, but I’m confident on the basis of using another similar product and if you persist, it does work.
This does not come without some discomfort and you need to be prepared for that. It’s not pain, per sey, but can be a bit tricky at times. Stick with it though as you get used to it and notice it less and less.
It’s easy to use and thankfully, you can use on your face also which is great as with some similar brands, you can’t. It also comes with a mini facial cleanser which is a great addition as these are pricey in their own right.
The instructions are simple and easy to follow. Stick to the times suggested, i.e, 2 minutes for your face only and fifteen minutes on your legs. You can use for your bikini line and underarm also.
If you use this now, you will be arguably in better shape to cease waxing/shaving by summer! Happy days!
