The Sleep and Wake-Up Light designed to help you relax and wake up refreshed. With light-guided breathing and personalized sun settings. From the sleep experts and makers of the leading global Wake-Up Light sold.

Sunset simulation to sleep

The sunset simulation programme prepares your body to sleep by gradually decreasing light and optional sound to your set duration, gently helping you to relax before you fall asleep.

  1. Multiple brightness settings

Multiple light settings let you choose which intensity level is just right for you. When you are not sleeping, the wake up light becomes an adjustable bedside or reading light.

  2. Tap to snooze

A slight tap on top of the wake-up light sets the snooze mode. After 9 minutes the sound will gently start playing again.

  3. With RelaxBreathe for sleep

Inspired by well-known breathing and relaxation exercises our light-guided winddown function is designed to help get you to sleep by helping you decompress from the day’s activities and unwind.

  4. Midnight and reading light

When turned on in the middle of the night, the Sleep and Wake Up Light provides a soft light that is just enough to let you find your way in the dark – without jarring your senses.

I got this to replace a much cheaper sunrise alarm which I got to test out the concept. It worked in theory, but the problems with the cheaper model I tried were:
    * it wasn’t particularly bright – the light reminded me more of early evening light than morning sun,
    * snoozing the alarm turned both the sound and the light off, somewhat defeating the point of the light and also that the alarm and light turn themselves off after 15 minutes.

This alarm is much brighter, easier to use and doesn’t have any of the design flaws of the cheap model I tried. For the price, I wish a DAB radio were included, but the regular tuner works well enough. The speaker isn’t high quality, but it’s loud enough, and good enough for listening to the radio to wake yourself up in the morning. A feature I like is that the radio volume in general is set separately to the alarm radio volume, meaning that I can set it loud to wake me up then dismiss the alarm and hit the radio button continue listening at a more comfortable volume until I’m ready to get out of bed.

This is a fantastic way to wake up in the morning its so soothing to wake up in a gentle way. Likewise when the light fades away at night to gentle sounds it sends you to sleep in a better mood. So pleased I purchased this.

    Pros:
Very good brightness. Good sounds. Packed with features.

    Cons:
It is way too easy to stop the alarm. One touch on the screen and it’s off. You have to touch on top of it to snooze. I ended up touching the screen unconsciously. I guess it’s more intuitive for me. If you are a heavy sleeper it might not work.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersOverall it’s a good product, it just feels like it’s lacking in a few places – When your alarm goes off you can’t snooze it or keep the light on. When you turn the sleep mode on, it turns the standard light off briefly before turning the sleep-light on (which can be a different brightness). The alarm settings are particularly poor, you have 2 alarms and they can either be off or on, no schedule/days etc.

The brightness setting coincides oddly with the warmth of the light (ie you can’t have a bright orange, as soon as it’s mildly light it turns yellow towards white).

The sleep and wake up modes work relatively well, the light levels are impressively well balanced and there’s no obvious jumps in colour/brightness, making it feel much more natural than most lights.

There’s a well placed touch panel on the top to turn a standard light on/off (of customisable brightness), which is really handy.

All in all it feels expensive for what it is, I wouldn’t buy it again for more than 80.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersPros:
-it is very bright, I feel like I wake up to a real sunlight. Brightens up my bedroom which does not get much sunshine. I notice that I don’t even need the alarm sound anymore, I literally wake up to the light
-the transition of light is very subtle and gentle. Especially in the sunset mode
-I love the design. I think it looks really cool, like some space shuttle thing
    -touch screen works great
-very easy to set up, nothing complicated

    Cons:
-ridiculously bad sound quality. That forest/wave/bird sounds are unbearable with the low sound quality and high frequency tone. I don’t use sound bits at all. Haven’t even attempted to try the radio. I have an alexa, would rather set a nature sound alarm on that
-the alarm has to be changed or switched off manually. It feels poor technology. I need to switch off the alarm every Friday and turn back on every Sunday. Come on Phillips, how could you not think of this? I will be worried about this now- whether I forgot to change the alarm or not.. adds to my anxiety
-that breathing thing is useless in my opinion. I couldn’t concentrate on that red light. Didn’t relax me.
-too expensive for what it is, especially considering the “cons”
Will keep mine for the pros, the newer model with the automatic alarm change, is too expensive I can’t afford it.

If you can buy this product on offer (I don’t think it’s worth full price), it’s a fantastic wake-up light and alarm.

There are a nice amount of alarm sounds to choose from, plus pressing the top of the lamp turns on the night light -a really handy addition should you need to get up in the night.

I also love getting ready to sleep with rain or waves playing in the background, it’s soooo relaxing

The light is absolutely beautiful compared to the other brands that look super plastic and cheap and the quality of the light itself is phenomenal. This one is a joy to look at but it has some things that really bug me.

Firstly the LCD interface is annoying to use but you get the hang of it eventually.

Sometimes I just want the red light it makes when it wakes you up but you can’t control the colour (s), only the brightness.

The clocks just changed and although it has a radio function, it didn’t auto change the clock via radio

This is my second phillips wake up light, and while overall i’m happy with it – my only complaint would be the light turns off with the alarm – would much prefer it remain turned on until manually turned off like my previous model HF3500/01.

The sunset unwind mode helps me doze right off to sleep, and the radio is a nice touch.

This light is easy to set using buttons on a ‘touch screen’. There are two alarm timing options which is useful. The relax function is lovely – we use it every evening when going to bed and find the warm light glow and our chosen sound of gentle waves, very relaxing. The always-on time display on screen is not overly bright and therefore unlikely to disturb sleep. I am not a fan of waking up to bright light so I set the alarm for 10-15 mins after I want to be awake and also use my iPhone alarm to wake me – this means that I wake up to a warm pink light rather than the bright ‘sunlight’ effect as it’s part way through the morning light cycle. The sound quality is not great but it’s fine given the intended purpose. It is expensive but I wouldn’t be without it because of the relaxing wind-down in the evening.

I love the fact this has no manual buttons and you can also switch off the display so it’s really minimalist. The gradual wake-up worked perfectly for me – I’ve set it to come on over 30 mins to brightness 19 with the yoga sounds to come on as a back up alarm. I am woken by the light a couple of minutes before the sounds. Also the night-light feature is really handy: I can easily set the dim orange glow to come on in the night if I need to go pee, which helps me from crashing all over my bedroom or having to switch on a main light (gah).

Absolutely saved me during the winter— I’m a fairly heavy sleeper and having this in combination with a 30 min wake up app was a lifesaver! Very sleek and modern design which I found intuitive to use and set up. Would definitely recommend for anyone struggling with winter. I have mine on a low light on my desk most of the day, the ambient glow is quite pleasant and it charges my phone too!

I like the sunrise option to waken up. Never used the sleep function. However, the orangish light for getting up during the night is excellent to see your way to bathroom without disturbing your sleeping partner. I have not used it’s FM radio. For the price of this device, it should have been DAB.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is an amazing product, I absolutely recommend getting it. It seems big but it’s just the right size, and everything in the description matches reality. It certainly eases my waking up in the morning, I never used it to get to sleep at night. I recommended this to plenty of friend already. If you are in doubt between a cheaper older model and this one, like I was, I can assure your money is worth. I also went through a lot of reviews comparing Philips to other brands but this was consistently the one advised. It does not have app connectivity but it doesn’t make much difference. Life changing product!

My wife is happy we have got this version as the smaller none wasn’t good.

My only problem is the selection of sounds or the inability to connect internet radio or another nature sounds of YouTube for instance.

The product is good but very hard to use and very, very frustrating. It is designed as a bedside lamp but if you are a glasses or contacts wearer you just cannot see the icons unless you have your glasses on, even then if the light is on you cannot see the icons well. The older Lumie was so much better as a simple sunrise sunset ligh

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve really been struggling to wake up and thought this might help… well, I wasn’t wrong! The sunrise function is great, I wake up feeling much happier as it’s much less jarring than having a radio suddenly blaring and as a bonus the sunset function is really helping me get to sleep. I’ve always been one of those people that can’t drift off easily but for some reason when the clock starts going reddish and can’t stay awake. I’m sleeping so much better and I genuinely wouldn’t be without it now, it’s been a godsend the last couple of months!

The Philips Smartsleep Alarm Clock is easy to set up for non techie people like me! I am enjoying waking up to the slowly increasing light and birdsong. Much less jarring than an alarm. The bonus for me is the sunset which, with the sounds of the rain or sea really is relaxing and the rhythm of the sounds make you adjust your breathing to slow down. If you want simple, uncomplicated, get this one.

Not sure what to say really. It does have all the settings as in the description, nothing at fault there. But it hasn’t greatly helped me get off to sleep much better and certainly does not get me up in a morning. But all that is probably my fault. If you are awake half the night then you don’t wake up too soon! Happy I did not pay the full price as on the Phillips website, the one I bought was an open box so much cheaper.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBit of confusion over the model? I thought this was the one that has the phone app?! It’s not, I don’t think it’s available in the UK? Anyway, it works really well and wakes me ok. Very good bedside lamp as well!

Now that my technology expert son has (with difficulty) set the light up I am benefiting from it a great deal.

It’s still not functioning for sleep – only “wake-up”, as my son spent up to an hour to get to this stage!!

You would need a PhD in Information Technology – to get the best out of it.

    A nightmare to programme!!!

The only other alarms I’ve ever used have been that on my phones, so can’t speak as compared to other alarm types, but compared to my phone alarms this is the best alarm I’ve ever used and well worth the money.

The gradual light increase wakes me up gently and I genuinely feel more refreshed waking up than I used to.

Definitely looks a bit funky but would highly recommend if you’re thinking about removing phones/screens from your bedroom and looking for an alternative alarm to use.

  24. Anonymous says:

Can’t live without it. Always wake up gently and alert, no noisy blasting alarms!
I’ve it set to birdsong and it literally just sounds like the birds out in the garden.
You honestly don’t need to fear not waking! You will! And there is an easy snooze function so it will go off again if you dose off.

Only downfall is you do adjust to waking naturally with the sunlight so you may find you wake before your alarm in the summer if you don’t have blackout blinds. This can be EARLY! Lol
But otherwise. I couldn’t do without.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve used a Phillips wake up light for the past 12 years or so, and finally that old one gave out. Not the light, but the sound. So I figured I’d get a new one. First I bought a cheap non-Phillips one that turned out to be a disaster, so I decided on a proper Phillips one instead.

I’m happy to see the new features added in comparison to my old one. Features I especially like:
    – the midnight function: if you need to get up in the middle of the night simply tap the top of the light and it will give a tiny amount of red light. Just enough to find your way and not stumble over clutter and breaking your neck. Very much appreciated.
    – ULTIMATE BRIGHTNESS!! The highest brightness level is seriously bright. No way you won’t notice that.
    – very dim clock light. I need my bedroom to be as dark as possible. Most electric alarm clocks have a clock light that is annoyingly bright, making it difficult to sleep. Luckily this light has a very dim setting, making the clock just visible at night. During the day it will not be very visible probably, but that’s fine. You can also turn it off if they want.
    – snoozing only stops the sound. The cheapo light I bought also stopped the light during snoozing which is just stupid.
    – the touchscreen can be quiet. By default it make a small sound, but you can turn it off. Using the menu is easy and straightforward.

No idea why it is designed to look like a ceramic sink drain, but you can’t win them all I guess. All in all this light is just about perfect, sink drain look and all.

Golden Review Award: 55 From Our UsersFor anyone who doesn’t want to read my entire review, this is my summary:
It is an excellent product but to me, it’s not worth the 125 I paid for it hence 4* instead of 5*.

I bought this Philips light to help me get into a better routine. I have always been an evening person, going to bed late and getting up as late as possible for work but I felt it was time to start transitioning into a morning person. I despise waking up in the morning, especially to the harshness of an alarm. The solution was a wake-up light to wake me up gently using a mimicked sunrise and natural bird noises.

I was tied between a cheap wake-up light on Amazon, Lumie or Philips. I tried a cheap wake-up light and returned it within 2 days as it wasn’t nearly bright enough and the speaker reminded me of the quality of the speakers we used to solder in Design Technology in school. I decided to go with Philips over Lumie as I preferred the modern look of the Somneo light and Philips has a great reputation for quality.

This Somneo light is a completely different level to the cheaper one I purchased (though should be for 8x the price). It’s genuinely made getting up in the mornings a breeze for the last 2 weeks, 8 am initially and now 7.30am. Here are the things I like and where I think there could be improvements:
    Pros:
    – Touch screen is excellent, easy to use and does everything you need. Super simple to set alarms as well as put the light on and adjust to whatever light level is necessary.
    – Speaker is good enough to where it’s difficult to know when waking that the sounds are coming from the wake-up light rather than outside.
    – Somewhat premium-feeling product and looks very modern to my eye, though of course, this is a taste thing.
    – Great night light feature (pictured) where if you touch the top the lamp goes red and gives you some light so you can see without it being overpowering

    Improvements:
    – It’s majorly overpriced in my opinion. I personally feel for its current functionality and features it should be more around the 70 mark. But, the entire wake-up light market seems to be overpriced, Lumie included. Hence why I’m content with paying the 125 as I don’t believe there’s much better out there for the money.
    – The radio is underwhelming, though that could just be my area. DAB radio would be a very nice addition, though in truth the radio is basically irrelevant to me as I won’t use it much, if at all.
    – Having the option to set which days on the alarms would be a good feature to add, though that’s not a big deal as turning off the alarm on a Friday night is super simple.

I’ve attached some pictures so you can see how it looks on different settings. I genuinely think it’s an excellent product, it’s just a bit pricey and there’s definitely some small improvements that could be made to make it better value for money.

Great product at a high price

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’ve been working night shift for a number of year but due to Covid, I had the choice of day shift or no job

One of the things I hated about day shift, was getting up in the dark to the buzzing sound of an alarm clock. Absolutely hated it.
So I invested in a light alarm clock.

Being woken by the simulation of a rising sun and if necessary, the soft sound of birds chirping or in my case the chimes of a Nepal Bowel is great.
I wake up with a more positive attitude, rather than a resentful one.
The light brightness is adjustable as well as the duration it takes to get there.
Alarm volume is also adjustable (which is a bonus as I wear ear plugs) and you have the option of having no sound.

There are two alarm settings, which I have one alarm set with light and sound for the week day (and my phone as a back up, which I’ve never needed). And the other set for light, no sound for the weekend.
BUT I do need to remember to switch the alarms on/off manually. You can’t schedule different alarms times for different days.

I also use the sunset simulation at bed time, which is also a very pleasant feature but I’ve not used the soothing sounds.

The night light feature is a bit low but usable.

Yes this is a very expensive alarm clock but you soon forget the cost when you wake up each day in a more positive mood than using the alternative.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSo many people thought I was crazy to buy a glorified lamp for such a price but for me personally it has been one of the best things I have ever bought. I work on a ship and sleep in an inside cabin with no access to natural sunlight. Prior to puchasing this I would spend hours hitting my snooze alarm and lose half my day as I was incapable of waking up in pitch black. Now with this lamp I naturally rise, feeling refreshed and it has positively affected my mood throughout the day. Good sleep is priceless so if you identify with my situation this product could really benefit you.

Personally, I didn’t have an issue with the settings. They aren’t the clearest but with a little common sense and process of illimination its easy enough to navigate. Fully adaptable with alarm brightness, volume and timing for your personal taste. The USB charger on the back is great to have but now that most devices need “Fast Charging” the speed of its charging is less than convienient, so I wouldn’t advise this to be your go to for charging your phone etc. Not sure if mechanically its worth the money but the positive affects its had for me is priceless.

This is the future of alarm clock’s trust me I have found it so much easier to wake up for work since getting this product the way it gradually wakes you up is amazing. If you are going to buy one of these clocks stay clear of the cheaper models you see on this site spend a little more to get a genuine product. Will be buying a second one for my daughter when she’s gets older for getting up for school.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo the cost seems a little excessive for what it does. The menu functionality is a little fiddly until you get used to it. Seems like you have to go to a menu to get to a menu to get to what you are trying to do. Other wise! Nothing but praise, the wake up feature is amazing, really soft impact and pleasant, and the relax feature for going to sleep is amazing as well. The USB charging port was an added bonus for me, as my house has very few logically placed wall sockets =)

I hate being woken by an annoying buzz or bleep. Somewhat sceptical that this would work but it does. Often find myself being woken by the light before the alarm goes off and it is heaven. Being woken up by light is much more gentle than by a sound and my day is started off in a nice way. Only reason for 4 stars is that it is quite pricey so I guess it depends on how much being woken up gently means to you. Also lovely to fall asleep to the sound of waves on the beach.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI’ve had my alarm light for about a month now. I’ve always struggled to wake up and the clocks changing really had an impact this year.

I’ve left it on the 30 minute dawn and this seems perfect. It really does wake me gently.
The alarm noises aren’t great but I’ve chosen some deep bells and it’s not unpleasant.

Snoozing requires tapping the top of the light so this feel natural (and not fiddly).

I’ve also been using the sunset feature. Although I’ve never struggled to get to sleep, it’s very calming and I think I get to sleep within about 15 minutes.

When used as a lamp, it’s pretty bright. I use this in the morning. My one annoyance is that it’s 3 taps to turn it off again.

Overall, the build quality and design is good. It’s easy to set up and looks pretty cool. It doesn’t omit any annoying noises and I’ve got it set up so the time isn’t lit at night (I like a dark room).

It was 110 when I got it (ouch) after reading all the reviews for similar products. I’m glad I bought it. It’s cut my snoozing down by half.

It could be improved by having different alarms per day / weekends etc. but I knew it didn’t have this when I got it. I leave it set for the weekend now too.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersReally easy to use, the touch version is so simple to use compared to other brands. I like that you can have 2 separate alarms, makes it easy to have a weekend alarm and weekday one. The display is bold and easy to see but it is dimmable so at night I turn it down to the lowest setting. You can also turn the display off completely which is a great option.

The radio quality is really good and the fade in with the alarm makes it less jarring.

The overall design is modern and slick, I’m really pleased I decided to try this instead of another lumie, which are always so unnecessarily complicated to use. Highly recommend.

This was a lot to splash out on for an alarm clock. I haven’t noticed a great deal of change in my sleep as I tend to not even notice that the light is on but it can go up a notch in brightness so I may fiddle about with it.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI got this light for Christmas, but I only started using it in the New Year when I went back to work. It is awesome!!! I float out of sleep rather than being startled into wakefulness. If I wake up earlier than the alarm, I know by the light level and sound that I have a bit of time to lie in. There’s no need to scramble to find the light switch to read the clock. This is my first wake-up light and I love it!
