Until it becomes out dated as tech does it has been a great lightweight, fast, tactile keys good laptop
Asus laptop
Very good laptop. Bought it as my main laptop. Excellent for the price.
good quality
i really liked it, great laptop – in perfect conditio
So far so good
Enjoying using it at present. Very fast compared to old laptop. Great screen. Battery sort of OK.
This is quite possibly the best laptop I’ve ever owned. It’s fast, really fast. The battery life isn’t fantastic but if you change the power mode when it’s not plugged in it lasts a few hours. I left it on high performance and I got about an hour and a half out of it. I tend to leave it plugged in for the majority of the time though.
Lightweight and fast laptop
I’m a domestic user but found my old Win 10 machine was getting slow despite clean ups and other methods to make it faster. This new Win 11 machine is lightning quick with SSID and an i7 processor. The hard drive is a bit small but that can be got around.
Outstanding Value
Great laptop for the price. Versatile and powerful for the average user. I can even play computer games nicely which my previous laptop couldn’t handle (even with 8 gb of RAM!)
Low cost great value
Can’t fault it, another great ASUS laptop- budget priced (paid 439) but great build quality and performance. Highly recommended. I’ve updated my review (April 2023) as this now ships with Windows in S mode – no big deal but you’ll need to take it out of S kids to install non windows store apps
Very Good
Great laptop once you switch to Win 11 home (easy and free) , s mode is awful ! mind you Win 11 is awful comared to Win 10 , i3 model fast wnough and good storage .HP value beater !
Does just what I need
I love that it is so light and silent, my last laptop was so noisy in comparison.
Once charged the battery lasts me days I use it very day for around 1-2 hours.
Best amoung it's class!!
Pos:
– Good configuration,
– Smooth performance for home working and studying
– Good battery life
– Excellent build quality
Cons:
– Weight – on heavier side of scale, not comfortable if need to be carried around frequently.
I got the icore 7 version of this and I am shocked to see how fast it runs. Im able to play games and stream with it. I feel like the only things that let this laptop down is the battery life being horrible even though it halfs the performance of my laptop when unplugged. I was also sad to find that there was no lan cable plug which sucks because I’ve had cheaper laptops that had one but overall it’s an amazing laptop for the price
I am basing this review on the price of the kit – you get what you pay for.
As a simple web browsing laptop to replace an aging device of similar spec for it’s time, I would say it’s excellent value and does the job web. I picked this one up when it was 380 quid for a relative – for what they use it for they are very happy indeed. Don’t expect to do anything usefully productive or gaming on this – it is what it is.
Use a little caution before purchasing read the specification carefully.
When I read the Amazon review I’m sure it said this computer had a backlit keyboard.this was a key purchasing feature for me,however I was disapointed to find the keyboard is’nt backlit, perhaps I’m missing something, however the description is misleading if this is the case.Other than that this computer is very good it’s fast & the screen quality is superiour.
No keyboard backlight lets this dow
I like the laptop, I’ve already upgraded the RAM by adding a 16GB module which improves it a LOT. especially with games and my Adobe applications.
Big minus is there is no backlight on the keyboard even though the manual references it.
Other than that, a great laptop.
Teething problem
On receipt added my personal apps and updated Windows, which required a restart. This froze the computer which freaked me out. Eventually found out how to do a factory reset, so all the apps needed to go back on. Now working well but could have done without the hassle.
Windows 11. Why?
The most annoying thing on is when they change software! And make you pay for 365! ! If I’d known this before, I’d still be on Office 2007! Windows / Microsoft rip off! B4stads!
Great for the money
Picked this up when it was on offer for a couple of hundred. Great machine for the money. Good for light office work, odd bit of coding, and classic games from about 10 years back. Fits my requirements to a tea.
"Full HD" Screen as state it was no
Returned the laptop as “Full HD” Screen as state it was not, very grainy and colours were very poor.
Seemed to operate quickly and easily, a good buy if you are not bothered about the screen quality.
Great Value
I am no expert on Laptops. So this is based purely as follows. It runs very quite. it is very lightweight to hold. It runs everything it was bought for very quickly. The Screen is crystal clear. In my limited opinion great value for money.
This is grea
super fast, a battery that works so I don’t have to plug it in all the time and very light and compact compared to my old one, also the screen is attached which is a bonus……..my last laptop was very old and very broken so this is a mega upgrade.
I have an old Packard Bell TJ65 that’s done me 10 years plus, I have to remove the keyboard (Stuck with velcro) then use a screwdriver to short a power up as the power button failed and a real pain to replace but it still works and for an old girl it is fine for me, BUT not for the rest of the family! The old TJ65 has an amazing shiny crystal clear screen as competed with the old Sony cinema laptops, but it is so flippin noisy it drives me mad and I installed a fan control software to quieten it down.
So I waited for Black Friday as I do my TV and Mobile requirements and this Asus laptop popped up very early on on Amazon before the sales started and I snapped it for 329. I bought a Crucial RAM 8GB DDR4 3200MHz in the sale for 20 which simply slots in, apart from undoing some screws on back of laptop it was simples, just plug and play, re-screw and done, upgraded Ram to 16GB. I am not a nerd or a techy, I don’t even know if I have done any good, but I feckin hate newspaper websites that kill my laptops and this has done the trick.
The Asus is really fast, very very quick starting, I have 3 profiles for family and it’s bullet fast. The screen is not as good as my old TJ65 but you getz what you pay for and it’s fine for what it has to do. If you need a seriously good screen then you need to dig deep right. It is light to carry, the hinges are not looking to be the strongest so will be careful and not take the Michael. But what I really love about it is it is silent, so silent I worry something is not right, I have a 1900 HP work laptop 3 months old and is noisy compared to this Asus! The battery is fine, it lasts for hours and I have never yet had to run for a charger, it is absolutely reliable and suspect that’s because it does not have an energy thirsty fan panging away..
The only downside is a real cheap keyboard, my HP is back-lit and posh, this is button press, twang and noisy as you type, but actually, for an old fart like me, it actually helps as I don’t mistype as much!
So I am sorry for the wordy review, I don’t do many, but it’s a definite yes from me and I would buy another, if I got some amazingly well paid job that meant i needed another, but I guess I have 3 laptops now so by default have a great job, unfortunately not in the pay scale department!!
First off, amazing laptop, top performance (i7 12th gen) OLED screen is beautiful, can’t praise this laptop enough, however…fan would ramp up often and I thought is was due to the performance of the CPU and not great cooling as it thermal throttled running Cinebench. I thought I would add some liquid metal thermal paste to see if I can improve cooling, I took it apart (a breeze by the way) removed the heat sink and found…just the worst application of thermal paste, didn’t cover the CPU!! added some liquid metal and the idle temps went from 55c to 25c, ran Cinebench and temps topped out at 65c!!! come on Asus a little product control would not go a miss. Should you buy this laptop…Absolutely and if your temps are high or fan ramps up often, check the thermal paste, you don’t need liquid metal just good application.
Quite a fast processor and ssd.
Purchased for my wife’s Christmas to replace her 3 year old ASUS laptop which was slowing down.
She uses it a lot for photo processing and was impressed by the speed which was probably helped along by the solid state drive. Loading photos from her camera is very fast, although I had to purchase a USB adapter as this doesn’t have an SD card slot. It doesn’t have an optical drive either but fortunately an external one isn’t too expensive.
No problems with Windows 11 and, to date, no problems with the laptop either.
Pleased with our purchase and the price it was just before Christmas.
So I was on the hunt for a new computer after my music production tower was definitely showing its age. I decided to go for a laptop as I wanted to take it out of the studio as well for live stuff. There’s a few cons but nothing major. I still think it’s one of the best laptops for the money (I got it on offer for 729. The 12th gen i7 version).
So here are the pros and cons. Pros: brilliant screen, backlight keyboard, really fast processor, additional thunderbolt ports, fast SSD and RAM.
Cons: RAM appears to be un-upgradable (could be wrong) and SSD is only 500GB. This is not a big issue as I will probably get an external drive someday. Battery life isn’t the worst but does drain quickly when you are actually doing something with the laptop. Fan can be quite noisy, although it isn’t on all the time. I wish there was more USB ports although I do have a separate powered hub.
Overall, it is a very quick and so far stable laptop that plays nicely with my audio interface and such. I feel like it is a little bit fragile though! Still, would definitely recommend.
had it delivered yesterday evening, quick review/observations:
– the screen is vibrant, the colours pop – but contrast felt a bit too much and I think there is too much red. It’s possible I’m just not used to an OLED screen on a laptop and I’m slowly adjusting. I played a few 4k movies this morning and I’m really liking it now!
– the laptop doesn’t feel super cheap but doesn’t feel premium either, it’s..Ok
– the laptop felt slow compared to my older quad core Dell. Maybe because everything wanted to update and it is running Vista..cough cough sorry Windows 11. Also the fans were triggering fairly often, not very loud but not quiet either.
I updated to the latest Bios, made a wind recovery disk, wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu. I had to plug in my USB-C thunderbolt docking station (with a usb keyboard) as it didn’t have laptop keyboard drivers at start. After installing the OS and running updates – the laptop keyboard works fine.
With Vista(wind 11) gone and Ubuntu on it, the laptop is snappy and the fans barely kick in.
– speakers aren’t very loud, but are ok
– I played some Darkest Dungeon last night, no problems. With an OLED screen you really appreciate the darker colours
– the battery will last about 4h
– warranty is only about 10 months for some reason, mine expires in November for some reason
For the money and after the tweaks, I’m really happy with the machine. I was looking at Dell XPS, but that would have been 200+ more, a worse screen but better build quality. Since I’ll use this for studying and a lot of youtube&twitch – the screen is important.
My main suggestion for everyone using windows would be to (if you have the skills), update Bios, make a windows recovery disk and re-install.
I have no idea what ASUS did or added to their build image but the machine felt slow compared to my older Dell (quad core). Well that is running a fresh install of Windows 10, while this is running the “new Vista” + some bloatware…
ASUS Vivobook 15 X515JA 15.6″ Full HD Laptop
This comes with windows 11 home S so if you need to run application that not in the windows store then you can opt out of the windows S mode and it will revert to the usual windows home 11.
This can be done in the windows store to switch version or even upgrade to Pro if needed too.
The laptop itself isn’t half bad, for the price you pay its pretty good value its snappy while being responsive and should be able to run most applications and deal with their needs rather well.
Its not a gaming laptop nor a system that can be used to run heavy applications, so if you need a system for anything else this is perfectly suitable.
Wouldn’t be a bad laptop if your needing something for school, college etc.
The battery is probably the only thing that i felt within the price range could have been better it still last around 3 – 4 hrs however, this will also depends on the settings and application used so will vary from person to person.
Has most connectivity that one needs so one USB-C, three USB-A one of which is a USB 3.2 a HDMI and micro SD card slot which personally could have been a normal SD card slot.
Overall is a quick, snappy laptop that prefect for school or college needs. Will run all windows application perfectly fine.
Only criticism is the battery life which i felt if aimed at the student could have been a little better.
Build quality is as expected within the price range, its still a nice simple yet sleek design from ASUS.
Great laptop, amazing screen & lower battery life
The specs are great, no issues at all. The laptop is super fast and manages a big load, it is light and the screen is just amazing! Colours are very rich and it is nice to look at. The battery is a lower side unfortunately but doable (lasts around 4 hours of full use I think, but haven’t tested it that well yet). The keyboard is fabulous, touchpad as well. Speakers are of poorer quality so I use headphones for meetings to hear well. Camera cover that is fitted in is useful so you don’t need to stick anything on it. It scans finger print for a qucik sign in and has new useful ports. No problems with overheating even on flat surface. Overall, I am super pleased with this laptop that I hope will last long.
Bought to be used for office work, internet browsing and some low level strategy gaming and it does all this with ease. Start up is ridiculously fast and so far all programs are very responsive.
The display is superb for work purposes but I wouldn`t class it as “ground breaking” when watching a streaming service. Its “not great – not terrible” to coin a phrase. The sound isn`t bad for a laptop but I do smile at the embossed “SonicMaster” logo on the front 🙂
I have no issues with the keyboard. Its responsive and feels just about right when typing away.
As for the body. Cheap, thin plastic. I wasn`t expecting much at this price but it really lets the whole thing down and makes me wince every time I close the laptop and put it in the bag as I`m worried I will damage it.
Battery life isn`t great. I`m getting about 4 hours.
If you are considering this laptop be aware that it does not have an ethernet port so its wi-fi or nothing 🙂
Its an okay entry-level laptop for basic office work, low level casual gaming and the odd movie or two. Just be gentle with it!
Decent specs for price @600 but misinformation regarding special feature: backlit keyboard (there is none other than the caps key) f7 which is usually reserved for backlit ctrl is blank & fn+f4/5 does nothing.
personally disappointed as the backlit functionality was one of the main reasons for the purchase!
However this was bought as a present & the recipient is still thrilled with the gift so item won’t be returned as it ticks all the other requirements.
Additionally, other reviews mention reduced battery & loud fans these can be fine tuned to personal preference in the myAsus app, (easily missed) depending on model* there is a whisper mode to substantially reduce fan noise. Initial boot & updates do activate the fans to an audible level but again this can be adjusted in the app.
First of all I have to say it has NO BACKLIT KEYS as some have suggested it has [ see Q & A section] but this could be due to the configuration ? i.e. mine is with an i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and 258 GB SSD.
It is quite bulky but no worry to me. This was to replace my 6 yr old Acer s13 with WIN10. Having tried to put my own configuration and programmes on this laptop I have found Microsoft are making it much harder to change what they want you to have in Win 11.. For instance trying to use Firefox browser that I like instead of MS Edge was not easy. You have to disable their S system. The same goes for other non MS programmes so putting obstacles in your way if you are trying to make individual choices. Also the new layout I am trying to come to terms with. So don’t expect it to be all plain sailing as they make you believe. Has a decent sized screen. The loss of backlit keys is a pain. The price seems decent generally though. Only really bought this due to increased storage from my Acer plus the screen section was coming away from the keyboard section so meant an expensive repair. On reflection just about justifying buying this laptop – so far !
The value of the laptop is really good. I bought the core i3 version for 229 pounds. I also added a 16gb ram to it. It has a 4gb onboard ram and 4gb user replaceable ram. I got a deal for a 16gb ram for 30 pounds for another black friday deal and added it. Now the machine is a really snappy. It can handle multitasking with many chrome tabs and 4k video streaming. It handles complex excel sheets, office documents just fine. I haven’t tested its gaming capabilities. Keyboard is good to type on and the trackpad is just average. Wifi performance is poor however i noticed that I can change it if I want. Battery life is pretty average(around 5 hours) while the screen is tft with poor viewing angle. The display is good if you are looking straight at it. Speakers are average but manageable. Overall this is the best value laptop in the market….
I purchased this as a replacement for my current desktop machine. The laptop, for the 1hr I had it, performed well. The keyboard is a bit “plasticky” for me, but usable. It came with Windows 11 pre-installed (Windows 11 is a lot less user-flexible compared to Windows 10, and I prefer to have more control over my setup, but that’s just a Microsoft Windows gripe, nothing to do with the pc)
My main gripe is that I didn’t check properly the port availability before I purchased this.
1) There’s no Ethernet port, so it can only connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (via a mobile or tablet hotspot).
2) Whilst I could connect a single additional monitor via the onboard HDMI port, I have a multi-screen setup, patched through a USB-C hub. However, the USB-C port on the laptop does not allow video output, or Ethernet traffic.
These two were showstoppers for me.
In conclusion, this’ll be perfect for just going about as an entry level laptop, but if you need additional connectivity, this may not be for you; it certainly wasn’t for me; I returned it same day that I received i
We’ve been Mac users for ages now but a friend of ours wanted us to get this for them.
They have been very happy with the performance so far and that it was a decent price at 479
There aren’t many other laptops with 16GB Ram 512SSD and i5 processor kicking about for that price.
We got the 16gb ram for longevity with windows support. The processor may prove an issue but we will have to wait and see
The screen is decent enough quality for people that don’t know it can be better or with eyesight on which Retina displays are wasted on.
It is lightweight which is good for something that is supposed to be portable.
A good solid buy
Only been using this for a few hours so far whilst I set everything up. Noticed it didn’t have the microSD card reader as advertised in the images, so got a partial refund for that as some compensation. So far it’s been pretty smooth performance-wise. Installation and updates were fine. If you like at the screen directly you can still see some vignetting already, and the viewing angle seems pretty narrow too, so probably not the best for watching stuff on. The other thing though is the fan! An hour in to setup and the constant high-pitched whirring is very noticeable (even as I write this on my phone with the laptop idling in the background is it still increasing in intensity!), so might need something to distract from it if it bothers you. Otherwise seems to be doing the job as a laptop for everyday use.
This is very good value having bought it during the Black Friday offers. I had another Asus Aspire 5 I bought about 4 months ago and the volume of the speakers was feeble. I understood from the specs that the Vivobook S 14 OLED K3402ZA has Harman Kardon speakers so I was hoping that the volume would be better on this new machine. However, whilst the sound quality is good, I was not surprised to find that the audio volume is feeble. I have ordered some external speakers but cannot understand what the problem is with producing a laptop with audio that can be heard at a normal volume. I don’t require intensely loud audio output, just not the muted levels which it seems let down this otherwise excellent machine.
The quality of the case, keyboard and OLED screen together with thunderbolt outputs are excellent.
It’s a very quick laptop, no question about that. You can have multiple programmes and/or internet tabs open and it doesn’t slow it down. Has all the right USB and HDMI ports so great connectivity. Transferring files using the USB ports very quick.
However, battery life is poor. You won’t get anything more than 4 hours from it. It also looks and feels on the cheap side. No keyboard backlight either. Screen is ok but more premium
laptops have a more superior display.
If you are after a fast processing budget laptop that you won’t be using too much on the go then this is the one for you. But if you use it a lot on the go, require something with a more premium feel and visuals are important then perhaps consider a more premium built with lower 8gb ram machine.
The Vivobook S 14 OLED offers a ridiculous set of features for its price. With a 12th-gen Intel processor, 16GB RAM, lightning fast PCIe storage and a gorgeous display, the laptop really seems to sit in a league of it’s own when it comes to the 500-700 laptop bracket. The design is understated and well built, with some obvious nods to Apple’s recently refreshed lineup of Macbooks – the thin bezels, minimalist silver body and large touchpad. I wish they didn’t include the obnoxious harmon/kardon branding underneath the keyboard, and I’m not a fan of the orange escape key, but overall it’s a nice looking machine. The display is absolutely gorgeous, and is what ultimately drew me towards the Vivobook in the first place. It’s 2.8k resolution, 90hz refresh rate and 600 nits peak brightness make it stand out even against laptops worth considerably more, including the M2 Macbook Air. It’s a pleasure to watch movies, browse the internet and even play some lighter games. Colours are vibrant and blacks are deep, and the 90hz refresh rate makes the whole laptop feel buttery smooth. It features a decent I/O configuration as well. On the right side, we find 2 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports (very nice), a HDMI port, a single USB 3 port and the headphone jack. On the right, a single USB 2 port, which is appreciated, but I would’ve loved to swap this with one of the Thunderbolt 4 ports to allow me to charge from both sides.
The combination of the i5-12500h and 16GB of 3200mhz means that this is a laptop capable of more than just web browsing. I use Ableton Live 11, and one of the main reasons for purchasing a laptop in the first place was to allow me to take my music with me to the studio or on long journeys, so a capable, powerful laptop was essential. The Vivobook does brilliant in this regard, handling multiple tracks with numerous plugins all at once without slowing down too much. Of course, compared to more powerful desktop pc’s and other higher end laptops, it struggles with larger projects, but for throwing down ideas and editing existing projects, the Vivobook is great. I tried playing a few titles from my Steam library as well, and, whilst you certainly won’t be doing any heavy gaming due to it’s discrete graphics, the laptop handled smaller titles well and was enjoyable to play. In fact, the display is so beautiful that I sacrificed higher frame rates for higher settings in some titles just to experience that OLED panel.
However, all these components need powering at the end of the day, and this is where, in my opinion, the weakest factor of the Vivobook lies – battery life. With a full charge, I was only able to make it to 8pm with light use throughout the day before the battery reached 10%, and this didn’t include any heavy-load programs like Ableton or games. To be fair, the incldued charger does charge relatively quickly, but I would definitely suggest taking it with you if you expect to be out the house for more than a few hours. It’s to be expected in a laptop of such a low profile with mid-high end specs, but it’s still frustrating to be constantly watching the battery icon as soon as you turn the brightness up or open a few different windows at once.
Overall though, this is definitely a laptop I would recommend, especially if you’re particular to a good display. It really is that beautiful, and is usually only found on laptops far more pricey. It’s got a clicky and satisfying keyboard, a big, responsive touchpad, and a display that makes even the most mundane tasks enjoyable. The battery life isn’t the best, but as long as you don’t mind carrying your charger in your bag, this isn’t too big of an issue. A sleek, fast laptop that you should seriously consider.
