Yep it’s a philips hue lamp so it’s expensive. But it’s fairly well built and the hue functionality is as you would expect. The diffuser works better than the hue square outdoor lamp as it’s a smooth light across the whole diffuser.

There is a couple of things they could improve. The 2 screws that you use to secure the front to the mounting plate are quite short so they make it harder to attach the front to the back. The split washer is a easy to loose thing that’s not great as when you attempt to attach the washer and nut to the screw it has a habit of slipping into the mounting plate.
The second thing is the electrical connections are poor. It really should be some form of maintenance free connection like a wago or some form of wireable plug as trying to screw a terminal block together while holding the front portion of the lamp and hold the nuts and washers it’s not the best experience. If you could pre wire a plug and click it together that would be much easier hence dropping a star.

Really loving the Philips Hue Econic so far. It looks smart with a classic yet modern appearance, and the quality seems really good. The smart features work well, and we can’t wait for Halloween to try out the various colour scenes

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic design with a modern twis

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPhilips Hue retains it’s position in my opinion at the top of the ‘Smart’ lighting pile. They have done so by making high quality lighting solutions that might be at the pricey end of the market, but work fantastically well. Given the issues I’ve had with other so called smart solutions this is a huge plus point.

So, out of the box you get a clean looking and well designed light that is a contemporary look on a traditional lantern. On my house it works well because it suits the modern renovated look – although of course, everyone may have a different take on it. Design is a personal thing but this lighting unit is likely to work on most houses.

Installation is easy – as long as you have some decent wall plugs, screws and the tools to do the job. I note that someone feels that the fittings should have been included but I’ve never used the supplied stuff. I always choose bigger better quality plugs and screws – and these depend upon the wall or structure.

Simple wiring – the usual L,N and Earth.

Once fitted and turned on it’s a simple matter of using the Philips Hue app to locate and set up the light. I’ve got ten Hue lamps in use in my house and all worked perfectly well without any faff at all.

The only thing I would say is that the Hue app whilst very good, is not quite as easy to use as one would hope. It does require a bit of thinking and setting up. Nothing one cannot work out but, I’ve seen apps that work more intuitively.

Overall, another excellent Hue product and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality and Ease of Use

    Ansonsten klare Kaufempfehlung.

    Schöne moderne Außenlampe

I have a good few Hue lights indoors, and after a few years they have become a natural part of every day, I use them for morning wake up alarm, mood lighting, and security when I’m away from home, as well as just for pure fun.

Adding outside lights front and back of the house was a natural progression. I used this good looking lantern to replace an existing (but not working) 500W halogen floodlight which had needed new bulb several times over the last few years and gave a certain Stalag charm to the front of my house. I’d given up on it really and just ignored it but had not got round to removing it

I was impressed with how straightforward this lamp was to install, and it looks even better in situ than it did in the box. Its an elegant modern take on a traditional lantern shape and looks really classy on the front corner of my house so it illuminates the side as well.

Havign got it up on the wall, I sat down to connect it to the wifi. It took a minute, if that. Really seamless quick link up and within a minute more I was having fun mystifying my neighbours with an ever changing show of colour. I settled with a nice warm white which transformed the house front and looks really welcoming.

After it had been up a few days I was expecting overseas visitors who hadnt been here before and were having trouble finding the house. Brainwave! I text them to say look out for the house with the purple light at the front.

If you have already Hue’d up your home, go and buy this now and complete the experience. If you havent yet been Hue’d, this may very well be the nudge you need to get started. Worth every penny of the price, practical and fun.

A superb looking light, looks even better once mounted (awkward to apply to a rendered wall and get a flush fit though!), screws to the wall with its plastic backing plate. Easy to put up and for once seems like it’s not a standard bulb in a fancy outer, but I could be mistaken – just didn’t want to take it apart too much!. The fact you can turn this whatver colour you like is impressive, perhaps be careful if you choose to set it to flash red with a home alarm, might attract the wrong clientel…. !!! Use a sperate bridge to make it do celver things, if you’re already into the whole HUE ecosystem then you’ll accept the cost to have clever and colourful ambient lighting that you can control with the likes of Alexa. For me cost is irrelavent, it’s a beautiful designed lamp that installs easily enough and is fairly bright. Makes my old house look a lot more modern.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is an expensive wall mounted lantern, but if you are already in the Philips Hue brotherhood; you just kind of accept that.
The light is adequately bright and you have access to the full colour palet of the Hue system through the Hue app.
Installation was a breeze in that it was immediately picked up by the app and just needed to be allocated to a location. It does not have a built-in motion sensor and that means that you need to invest in the new external motion sensor as well if you want to use it to its full potential. However what it does; it does very well, and I don’t regret the investment.

This is much bigger than I was expecting but quite light and looks great up. Lots of room in the wire casing which made it not too bad to wire in. Gives out a lot of light and the Philips hue app is easy to set up and use. Will be lovely in the summer for setting the mood in the evenings. It defaults back to white light when you turn it off and on again which works well for us.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBack in 2017, I decided I would try out the Philips Hue system by replacing the six halogen GU10 bulbs in my lounge with Philips Hue LED White and Colour Ambience equivalents. Without going into huge amounts of detail, I was so impressed with the features (dimming, colour changing ability, voice control, independent control of bulbs, remote operation etc) that within a month, I had replaced every bulb in my house with Philips Hue bulbs (a total of 36 bulbs)! Accordingly, it’s probably fair to say that I’m a huge fan of Philips Hue.

Over the last year, the range of Philips Hue lights has been expanded significantly and in 2018 alone, there was the release of the Philips Hue Play Light Bars (which I use behind my TV for ambient lighting) and a further range of outdoor lights, including this Econic Wall Lantern.

In respect of the light fitting, I think this is actually very modern and stylish and is constructed from black aluminium and a white plastic cover which protects the lighting unit. As far as first impressions go, it feels very robust, both in terms of the weight of the entire lantern but also in the thickness of the plastic cover, which should hopefully last the lifetime of the lantern with ease (rated at 25 years, albeit, if you use it for an average of 12 hours a day i.e. on at sunset and off at sunrise, it is only expected to last for 5.7 years).

One thing to note though is that the lantern is huge! The lantern itself measures 20cm(w) x 20cm(d) x 23cm(h) and that is not including the frame to mount it to the wall. Accordingly, it does seem bigger than many standard lanterns but I don’t really find this objectionable.

This particular Philips Hue lantern is different from many of the other products which I have had the privilege of trying out, in the sense that the “bulb” in this lantern is actually LEDs printed onto a circuit board and thus, is non replaceable. Accordingly, once the lighting unit fails, there is virtually no alternative but to replace the entire lantern. This might seem quite wasteful and indicative of our throwaway society however, it has enabled Philips to manufacture Philips Hue products which are significantly brighter than the alternatives which have replaceable bulbs (1,150 lumens compared to 806 lumens).

The lantern is very easy to fit, requiring only two screws and rawl plugs (not supplied) to fit to the outside wall and then fitting the power cable into the supplied connector block. Anyone who is reasonably confident with DIY should be able to fit within an hour, probably less for an experienced electrician.

That brings me on to the smart features of the lantern. In order to use the smart features, you will also need a Philips Hue Bridge , which needs to be purchased separately. Without the bridge, the lantern will simply operate in the same way as any other light i.e. turn on and off with the switch on the wall, which would then defeat the purpose of purchasing this kit!

Once the Philips Hue Bridge has been connected to your internet router, the lantern is very easy to connect into the Philips Hue system – download the Philips Hue app (if you don’t already have it) on any iOS or Android phone, search for new Philips Hue bulbs and the system will do the rest. Once it is connected, the smart features are ready to use and from my perspective, the most useful feature is the ability for it to turn on automatically, when you arrive home. This operates by entering your home address into the app and when your phone’s GPS detects that you are close to home, you can set the app up so that it turns the light on (either at any time of the day, or between sunset and sunrise).

Other useful features are the ability to dim the bulb using your phone (or Google Home/Alexa), set routines for the light to turn on and off at certain times, set a timer for the light to turn off after a certain period of time and change the colour of the light to one of 16 million different colours.

Overall, I love this kit – both the style of the light fitting and the smart features, so why not give it a try? I appreciate that the Philips Hue system might be very expensive however, in my opinion, the smart features are invaluable and having adopted the Philips Hue system, I wouldn’t consider going back to basic bulbs.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersYou’ll need a bridge to get the most from this light which works really well with the hue light system – it’s colour so you can have whatever shade you like or set it up with other lights in the range to flash, colour change or emit a slight glow. The light itself is really well made, and a good mix of traditional with a contemporary twist. It juts out a fair way so is a good choice for a patio or the side of the house.

We have found the light easy to install and to use – we do already have indoor hue lights and this complements the range well. To get best use you probably need a sensor to get it to come on with movement, or alternatively you could program it to come on at dusk or use conventionally turning on at the switch or via the app. You can even get Alexa to turn it on.

A great light that is an excellent addition to the Hue range. Love it.

This is our third Philips Hue external light, and completes our outdoor lighting. It’s really well made, attractive to look at and works very well indeed. We’ve added in one of the new external sensors to our Hue system which works with both the outside and indoor lights to turn on when someone approaches and create the impression that someone is at home. Using the Hue app and Amazon Alexa makes controlling the lighting utterly simple and adds a layer of security and a sense of comfort when we are away from home. These lights are far from cheap, but they do their job really well.

This thing is huge! And being metal, it’s pretty heavy too. You attach a round plate to the wall over the flex and the whole weight of the beast is screwed onto this. It is an integral unit, with no bulb to replace, so fingers crossed it lasts for 25 years. I’d normally not like chocolate box type lanterns, but this does have crisp modern lines. Having colours in the garden is very pleasant when it’s set up with a bridge, and you can now get a separate outdoor motion sensor to link in with the app.

This is a review of the Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance LED Econic Black Wall Lantern Down, and not the other Philips lamps available on this Amazon page.

For anyone not familiar with Philips Hue, the longstanding system links smart lights to the internet using a Hue Hub which needs to be wired to your router. The system allows you, via the iOS and Android app, to control Hue lights from anywhere in the world, including at home. You can set routines – so a light turns on a 6pm and off at 8pm, for example, or that an outside light turns on at dusk and off and dawn. The Hue system can be linked to other smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa – so you can ask Alex to turn lights on and off, set a brightness level, or chose a colour. It will also link to Samsung’s SmartThings which will allow, for example, a light to be turned on if there is no motion in the house within 10 minutes.

The Hue range has expanded dramatically from an initial range of screw-fitting full-sized light bulbs and GU10 halogen replacements. Now there are a wide variety of bulbs but also light fittings including the lantern here. All Hue installations are dimmable, and use LED technology. There’s a choice of simple white, tuneable white (from a warm light similar to old style incandescent bulbs), and colour bulbs although not all light fittings come with a full choice.

This model uses colour LEDs so that you can set using the App, or some Smart Home devices, the colour and brightness. It is extremely robust and quite weighty. You’ll need to have a similar existing wall fitting or get an electrician in to install the unit.

In use the system linked easily to my existing Hue system and performs as expected. It looks very good.

Hue is my preferred smart home lighting system. It’s been about for a long time and is likely to be around in the future. It is worth noting that you will need to buy a Hue Hub if you don’t already have one which costs up to 50.

One star dropped for the lack of a hub and the overall cost. Four stars.
