About Us

“What do you think about going into die casting?”

It was September 1943 when this proposition was brought to Ryobi founder Yutaka Urakami.

The proposal came from the manager of Mitsubishi Electric’s Fukuyama Works in Hiroshima . Yutaka, then operating a small trading company, was no technician and, with no knowledge of die casting, had to ask “What’s die casting?” The manager explained and Yutaka immediately set to work reading about the process, learning about it from scratch.

After this momentous conversation and careful consideration, his reply to the manager was decisive: “I’ll do it.” This decision came just one week after Yutaka heard the term “die casting” for the very first time.

    Brilliant piece of kit.

The pusher is cheap plastic but otherwise this is a great device.

I use this periodically to shred branches and offcuts from bushes etc Overall very pleased with the machine – as long as the piece fits through the hole it will shred it up. If you put too many leafy offcuts in sometimes it can get stuck but usually with a push it continues. The container usually fills up at one end and therefore you don’t really get all the capacity. Overall I am really pleased with it – has been very robust in use and not too noisy on balance. I would recommend this tool though – seems very good for the price too.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve drastically reduced a silver birch in the garden and had loads of branches to dispose of. My previous shredder was a spinning disk type and continually struggled with even quite thin branches, often getting blocked and seizing up.
When I saw the video of this machine in action I could hardly believe what I saw – but it really does chew up whatever it’s fed with!
I’ve used it for days on end and not had any problems with blockages. The built in collection box is easy to remove and empty, then return to its place, with a sliding safety catch.
Thoroughly recommend this machine for ease and efficiency of use.

Very impressed, easy to set up and use, it just pulls everything straight in with ease. I bought it mainly to shred all the constant pruned branches of my willow tree and am so pleased with its performance, a nice sized bin. Would recommend for any home gardener.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAfter a couple of minor hic cups with the assembly we started shredding.

I wouldn’t say it was ‘silent’ but it is very quiet, for a powerful shredder. So far it has handled every thing we have thrown at it, large branches, about 1.5 inches, (~35mm), diameter are chewed up with ease.

It has reduced a 100Lt bin of waste to less than 20Lts volume. Very easy to use and would definitely recommend it to others.

For years I had a Mountfield shredder which has now virtually disintegrated. Didn’t think I would ever find one as good but this one comes very close. Is reasonably quiet and munches up fairly thick branches with ease.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNot exactly silent, but this is a good shredder. It deals with our garden pruning and branches of the Christmas tree, shredding them neatly into its bin. We use a Hotbin for composting and that needs a supply of wood chippings. The shredder gives us a good supply of these, stored in the shredder’s bin. I have deducted a star because while the motor is not deafening, it is not silent, as advertised.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersJust moved in to a house that had a really overgrown garden, this shredder made light work of all the overgrowth , and managed to shred everything easily, really quiet operation too, it’s loud nearby, but if your 10 / 15meters away it’s very quiet , much quieter than a lawnmower.

    Solid 10/10 from me

I used the shredder to “digest” anything below 35mm in diameter whilst taking down a large silver birch tree in my garden. It coped with everything I put through it. At one point though, the foliage refused to be shredded. I checked the hopper and the cuttings were piled too high – a thing to look out for. The shredder had plenty of power and I never had to use the reverse button.

The instructions for the cutter adjustment knob were vague and could be better.

Overall, a robust and reliable (so far!) piece of kit but then again it should be for 282!

I had a 6 year old Christmas tree too big now so along with other hedge trimmings was cut down. Eats through quite thick branches. Box often needs emptying and put safety lock on. Not loud, no ear defenders needed.

The wife set this up! Took her all of 5 minutes. We have a whole tree to shred, the Ryobi has cut up a bucket and a half so far, with no issues. It’s easy to use. It has cut up some decent sized bit of stick. Some bits are thicker than others, we will take all the cuttings to the local municipal recycling centre. So the size is not so important to us. There is no chance of getting fingers trapped in the cutter, which is down to the design. We would recommend this.

This is the 4th shredder that I have owned, including a petrol powered one. This is the best that I have used. It is quiet and steadily chomps its way throuigh whetever is fed into it. I had a 6 foot high pile of prunings and worked my way through them in 3 hours, a job that would have taken 6 or 7 hours with my previous shredder.

We have not had time to fully evaluate the Shredder but after putting it together, which took about 20 minutes, and putting a couple of 25mm dia branches through everything seem to be working well.
The structure of the unit makes it very sturdy and we hope it will give years of service.

The Ryobi RSH3045U 3000W Silent Impact Shredder is brilliant. There is no better garden shredder in my view.

Previously I’ve used the Bosch 600853670, Shredder AXT Rapid 2200 (2200 W, 230 Volt System, Cutting Capacity 40 mm, in Carton), Green/Black which was very basic. This has a spinning disc mechanism which gets easily jammed. I’ve also used a heavier petrol shredder from a friend which was expensive to buy, heavy to transport and very noisy.

The Ryobi RSH3045U 3000W Silent Impact Shredder, isn’t easy to lift, about 25kg, but easy to manouvre and wheeled. It is easy to assemble, collects the mulch conveniently. Best of all it takes 4-5 cm thick stems without jamming. It also has a clever self feeding mechanism which pulls long stems through after the initially feed. Didn’t clog with slender Virginia creeper stems either.

    Great tool.

For the price, l was pleasently surprised by the work effort this machine was capable of. I was expecting average work load for a shredder of this price. When first used, was surprised of how well it worked.

For general home use, this item is more than good enough. Just don`t have expectations of it shredding like a more expensive machine, then you won`t be disappointed.
Would like to have given four and a halve stars, but nothing in life is perfect, not even your partner.

This is a relatively powerful machine for the size and well worth the cost. It chews up small and medium size sticks upto 45mm with no hesitation. The output is easy to compact, bag and dispose of. The plastic feed lips are durable and the device does not seem to overheat in operation. It is easy to operate and clean. This is a recent purchase and will deserve 5 stars if it lasts several years of reasonable usage.

This chipper has a powerful motor. I had a shredder before which did chop finer but it used to jam regularly. This machine is great. When you push larger sized branches, the motor speeds up to chomp through them. I wish the feed hole was a bit bigger but all the same it works really well and has managed everything I have thrown at it so far.

This has come in very very handy because I have a thousand buddleia trees.

However it should be noted it is NOT silent, the instructions are not worded and are instead cryptic pictures, and if you let soft materials like leafs or flower heads go through, it WILL jam and it’s a royal pain getting it unjammed.

I do like it though and I’m glad I have it.

This is a rotating disc shredder so it’s self feeding and copes with branches much bigger than it says it will. I cut down a 15 foot conifer by 5 feet with really thick interior branches 3 inches thick and whilst it strained a bit they went through. As it’s self feeding you can stick a branch in and then go back for more so it’s very quick. Having a 3kw motor makes all the difference as well, the extra power is worth having simply because this shredder keeps going when others cut out due to overheating. Pretty much exactly what you’d expect from Ryobi in fact.

Brilliant shredder running at approx 85dBA at 1m when not shredding but when working hard it peaked at 106dB and the operator at 1m distance definitely needs hearing protection. The Ryobi data sticker has 102dB shown which could be an optimistic average for thin twigs. With suitable hearing protection the shredder is a joy to use and can drag in quite large twigs for shredding and then composting. After the shredder is disconnected from the mains power the cutter wheel is easy to access to remove obstinate bits of wood that need extracting. This appears to be a good shredder worth considering.

I cut down three trees, one lelandii and two hawthorn. The lelandii shredder so easy and used all the shredding as a base outside my shed and worked brilliantly. No clog and fantastic.

The hawthorn was more challenging as the branches where a bit unmanageable bit still shredded fine.

It’s not silent by any means but not loud either, you just know the machine is in use but it’s a great bit of kit and recommend to anyone with light to medium branches and debris they need to dispose of.

There is nothing really to dislike about this machine. It deals easily with branches up to 40 mm which produces a superb mulch.
What it doesn’t deal with well is leaves.
Some pass through unscathed others are corrugated. For our use it is great easy to clean and if you get a jam the reverse usually un jams the clog . If you want a leaf shredder this is not for you.

For a small garden with lot of big bushes and woody plants this has been fine we have some trees in our garden it has worked well on anything under 40mm which is its limit if like me you are paying to get rid of of your garden waste you can get more in bin I can only compost so much. Now I have this will mulch more now as well. Hoping to do away with my Garden Waste Bin with the council.

This just eats everything! The cutting head rotates on a spindle and does it slowly but efficiently.

Something wet like freshly cut blackberry branches don’t cut well and you may end up with them still whole but mashed. But, give it something like branches and it eats them. The chippings range from coarse to fine.

I used it to chip up some apricot branches to throw on my BBQ for some smoke.

Leaves can get stuck but I found that instead of using the plastic “stuffer” I was better off switching off and levering out the leaves with a bamboo stick.

This is a solid weighty built shredder. It performs well and so far has not cut out from overheating. It shreds a little coarser than my previous shredder and tackles 40mm branches easily. Was a little fiddly setting up the blade clearance.

This shredder is a solid piece of equipment and takes decent size branches in its stride. I have thinned out a small orchard of apple trees and it made light work of it. So long as you keep within the suggested thickness of branch it works brilliantly. Seems robust and turns piles of branches into smaller bag loads. Extremely useful for a medium size garden.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersI have owned a Bosch AXT RAPID 2200 shredder for over 6 years and despite having a sharp blade, decided we needed something with more grunt. Well the Ryobi certainly has that. It munches branches up to 45mm all day long and the only time it came to remotely being clogged was when the collection box was full. However, bigger branches finish up as nuggets the size of say a marshmallow. So its cylindrical blade (which is self feeding unlike the Impact type shredders that require you to push the branches in), chips rather than shreds, so much so, that we have been passing the contents of the Ryobi box through the Bosch to get a finer shred, in order that it will mulch faster. I could have looked at the Bosch AXT25TC but at nearly 200 more, passed on that and it seems to be similar in how it cuts.
Smaller branches and brambles are not a problem, providing you don’t choke it by putting too much in. Common sense prevails!

My conclusion is that when it comes to domestic garden shredders there is no one size fits all but one thing for sure, the Ryobi with its 3000 watt motor takes NO prisoners!

A FINAL WORD OF CAUTION. If you are using this on an extension reel make sure that the cable is rated for 3Kw AND THAT IT IS FULLY UNWOUND to prevent the cable from overheating.

Just got this shredder this morning. Chopped up piles of twigs and branches in more than three boxes, about 160 litre in less than two hours. It not only grind but also chop so the end product could be used as mulching material directly. Some comments said it is heavy, but comparing with my 15 years plus old Bosch AXT 22D, it is almost the same. I installed it in 10 mins and put it into action immediately. To me the weight means sturdy and toughness. In the two hours I have hard branches and soft material but pretty dry. They all go through the shredder smoothly. Not a single jam. Well, what can I say?! Comparing to my old Bosch, it is just brilliant! Why spend 400 pounds to buy a new Bosch?

Used it for several hours yesterday. Very quick. No jams, presumably in part due to the available power. Two large piles of lopped branches from magnolia, elderflower bush / tree, and conifer now converted into chips, and mulch. Mulch now being composted. Some of the wood chips onto a path. Very pleased. Will now see if I need to register the purchase for the guarantee.

Am quite impressed with this machine had an electric shredder a number of years ago it was useless,so thought long and hard about buying this. Copes well as long as you don’t try and shove to much in at once. Almost better at dealing with thicker stuff than thinner material. The reverse button is very useful if you get a slight blockage. Worth the money if you use it often enough and better than trip after trip down to the recycling centre.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis shredder is relatively simple to assemble and easy to use. It has a large collection bin and can run for a prolonged period. It isn’t “silent”, but it’s not terribly noisy. I’m probably at least 80 feet from nearest neighbour but nobody has complained yet! It does get jammed but access panel to clear it is easy to open. Seems very robust. Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUsed this to clear up after cutting down a tree in my garden, really good at mulching branches up to 40mm. Wouldn’t say it is silent but quieter than my previous one. Main advantage for me was not annoying my neighbours by burning all the branches that are to small to use as firewood. Also good at mulching the ivy which was on the tree.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersMy Ryobi shredder arrived very quickly from Amazon. I am an elderly lady(5ft tall), with mobility problems, but found it quite easy to deal with.
I was able to slide the box across laminated flooring into my living room to unpack it. Laid on it’s side and with the tape cut, that was simple enough. Checking the parts on the diagram, included was also simple.
Following the diagrams it took me about 20 minutes to completely assemble the machine and to stand it upright onto its wheels, ready to wheel outside into the garden.
It is simple to operate and I put a large pile of Eucalyptus branches through the system in 10 minutes. That 1/2 -filled the collection box which is heavy enough for me to deal with. This included hard wooden stems that had already had the side growths removed with a small hand saw. I was only left with the wide part of the branches, will provide logs.
Having previously used an old Bosch model which was good but certainly not as fast, or strong as this and also having tried the new very expensive Bosch which was very difficult to unpack and assemble, then failed to switch on, resulting in having to pack it up for return, I am more than satisfied with the Ryobi model and look forward to using it in short sessions to deal with mor of my garden rubbish. I can certainly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersThere seem to be two sorts of shredder – those with a spinning blade, and those with a slowly turning cog. This is the cog type. Put a chunk of wood in, and it cranks it through and crushes it into pieces about 40mm long and generally crushed sideways into fairly small pieces. This compares extremely favourably with my dad’s shredder which is the spinning blade type and apart from getting clogged every 10 minutes, can chop into lengths 20cm or more.
When it first arrived, the cog was set with a bit of space between it and the adjustable crushing plate. This meant that if i put wet wood/ green leaves through, they were corrugated but not cut. There are few instructions, it tells you that there is a knob to adjust but not what is the optimum position to adjust to, so i had to experiment a bit. Correctly set, it’s fantastic and very fast.
Note that it doesn’t have a hopper to fill up with stuff, just a short length of housing with a hole at the top only just big enough for the size of wood it accepts. This has a number of advantages – one being that there’s no hopper to clear out when it jambs; but a disadvantage that you can’t put bits of wood with sharp angles in. But because the cog turns fairly slowly, this shredder doesn’t fire things out at high speed and doesn’t wiggle a branch rapidly (my dad’s often bruised hands by catching the branch on its way in)

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was surprised how slow the rotor was but under use it was powerful enough to crush branches up to 40mm dia. providing they were reasonably straight. It did not reduce the foliage as small as my previous machine but it certainly seems more robust and safe to use. Overall I was very pleased with its performance.

Golden Review Award: 88 From Our UsersI had initial reservations about ordering this shredder: I was initially drawn to to the Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 (as I’m generally confident in their products ) but it had enough variable reviews to put me off. This Ryobi has a bigger power output and generally looked ‘beefier’ so I thought I’d take a chance on it instead. I’m so glad I did because I have been most impressed with its performance since!

The unit has a relatively small footprint and is easy to move about via the its wheels. It’s not too loud in operation and you won’t need ear defenders. The clippings box is a decent size at 55 litres (which translates to being full every twenty minutes or so if shredding constantly). It’s very simple to operate: basically just ‘on; ‘reverse’ (if the mulched gets jammed) and ‘off’. It’s very safe to use also – and there is no danger of losing any fingers even when using them to force down the odd bit of resistant garden matter (though use of the provided paddle for this is better and more effective).

So far so good, but what’s great about this shredder is how reliable It is and pretty much happy to handle anything I’ve thrown at it. It claims a maximum width of branch/stem of 40ml and it manages this with ease (and I’ve often exceeded this) you can stuff things in pretty indiscriminately (ie grab a handful of mixed diameter branches mixed with softer/greener stuff) and it just chips it all without fuss. I have used the shredder for several hours now for long periods and not once has it overheated or required manually freeing up/clearing the mulching gear/mangler. What you tend to find is that once the collecting box is full it won’t accept new material until it’s emptied. This too is a safe process as the collecting box acts as a circuit breaker once it is removed (ensuring that the unit can not be activated until it is replaced). I’ve probably only needed to use the ‘reverse’ function a couple of times to unblock a jam (and this worked fine).

In short this is a great product that I’m really pleased with. Simple, effective and safe – and for the money probably as powerful as you might get. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersThis is one big buy and being low priced I was geared for some disappointing performance. This is the best purchase i made after my house and car this year (a little noise there kkk)

Compared to other high priced kits in the same small domestic ranges; I think this one is the best. I have run it for a tough 4 hours right from packaging and must say I have no regrets on first day of use.

The is an adjusting screw for the shredding, The machine is not as silent as stated but rest assured it’s not uncomfortably loud. Assembling is so easy, took less than a minute (at least I quickly figured out). Assembly instructions are there but too much graphical, would have preferred a few more words.

Now I don’t have to hire some pricey guy who goes dump the waste in places illegal; i can happily take to recycle point and for some time am sorted

The only thing I wish was there out the box is bucket-free mode rather than having to empty the collection bucket after a few minutes shredding. A more conical/funnel on inlet gap would be a big plus as with current one it does get too small for some cuttings.

I just hope in the next versions there is emphasis on power saving by way of a built in auto-switch that can cut off/on when needed rather than run even when there is nothing in the machine.

    Overally, i am very impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look no further, just go for it.

Golden Review Award: 50 From Our UsersBin is big. Mechanism is relatively silent (I didn’t need ear plugs). The large wheels make it quite manoeuvrable given the size.
But you need to ask yourself why you’re buying a mulcher.
If it’s so you can do your own composting, consider the garden waste you will be putting through it.
It does very well on hard and semi-soft matter; like tree / bush cuttings.
Where it doesn’t do nearly as well is with soft but resilient waste like brambles or creepers where the blades do not make a clean break allowing each stem to twist around the mechanism.
I’ve not found it a major problem, and I don’t know if other mulchers would fare any better, but it’s something to bear in mind.
