I just bought this lens for my FX30 and wow! It’s a sharp and lightweight beast with excellent build quality and performance. I can see why these lenses get so much hype. A great lens for people who are starting out and seasoned pros alike.

Great all purpose option for APS-C sensors. Fast focusing, good ergonomics and sharp images. Distortion and CA are within correctable range. Doesn’t have OS. In terms of its price it’s excellent value for money. Sigma should’ve designed it for 16-50mm zoom range and moved its 16mm prime to 14mm (for APS-C) for true ultrawide FOV.

I bought this to replace the kit lens, its sharp, fast and makes for a perfect travel lens. You have a constant 2.8f aperture so lots of flexibility, especially in lower light. Took this on a trip to Asia and Australia and it was a great all rounder! highly recommend

The only subjective drawback of the lens is the lack of optical stabilization. But the lens is very compact.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI wanted a good walk around lens and this is it. I would like to have a standard zoom that was f1.4, not happening with my budget if one even exist lol. This Sigma is f2.8 through it’s full zoom range. This paired with my ZV-E10’s great handling of high iso can get me close to at least the speed of an f1.8 with very little extra noise. I am not a pro (YET), but this lens will help me on my way I’m sure. I was able to do a whole day’s worth of shooting with just this lens and my ZV-E10 on my neck. No 100lbs. of gear to worry about. To someone with a low income, this lens is still a lot of money, but obtainable.

The huge weakness of this lens is in backlight situations where you will see significant purple fringe chromatic aberrations. (For example, nearly any time taking a pic with a tree with no leaves).

Otherwise, except the lack of reach, this lens will impress. Sharp as a tack. Lighter than all but a few primes. I fit an a6600 with this lens into a jacket pocket!

At 50mm, close to your subject, you can get pleasant bokeh.

At night, my a6600 with this lens simply trounces my old IPhone X (but an iPhone 14 could narrow this gap…)

In my quest for an f2.8 zoom I initially purchased the Tamron 17-70mm. While feature wise this lens was almost perfect like the really good IQ, the focal length in both ends, and the VC, it’s just too big to carry around all day on my a6000. The Sigma on the other hand is the perfect size, and the 18-50 meets most of my focal length needs. My only grips is that the distortion on RAW files are pretty significant, so much do that you notice it while looking through the viewfinder. Good thing most photo editors and the camera (at least for jpegs) correct this.

I keep this lens on my camera most of the time, and use the Tamron for nighttime/lowlight situations and primes if I going for something very specific. If my camera had image stabilization built it, I’d sell the Tamron.

Excellent lens. Great build quality. Almost as good as my prime lenses in terms of sharpness, only a bit slower but has the advantage in that I only need to carry one lens, not three. Tested the autofocus on a moving subject and it was very accurate, didn’t miss one shot in a burst of ten. Highly recommended if you don’t want to carry three primes and are happy to accept the f2.8 max aperture.

This lens is a perfect pair with the Sony FX30. The image is just gorgeous, at least for video which has been my primary use. The barrel does extend when zoomed, so you would think it’s not great on a gimbal. But the light weight of the lens hasn’t thrown my gimbal off balance at all, even when changing from one extreme focal length to the other.

At this price point, you will not be disappointed with this lens, and it would give more expensive lenses a run for their money.

Perfectly worth the price. There is a huge difference in quality compared to the basic Sony kit lens (E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS). No OSS, but that’s not really a problem. If you’d even spend more money on a lens, I’d recommend the Tamron 17-70mm instead.

Sigma have really outdone themselves with this lens. It’s a really compact size, making it a great option for travel coupled with my Sony a6400. Despite the size, the quality of th shots is absolutely fantastic — it’s not far off my f/1.8 Sony prime lenses. Autofocus is fast, accurate and silent. For the price, there’s nothing else that comes close.

My ZV-E10 pairs with this lens 90% of the time, shows how versatile it is. It’s reasonably sharp for a small zoom lens. The weight and size are the main reasons I got it over the Sony and Tamron. As a beginner I felt the most important thing is taking camera out and use it, it’s difficult to do so with heavier and bigger lens.

I’ve been waiting for a compact standard zoom for years since I bought my A6300, and this looks like the one. It’s a very pretty little lens which pairs beautifully with the camera, and is the perfect size for a lightweight carry about. There’s no image stabilisation and limited zoom range, but compact size is more important than those features for me, though I do wish it went a bit wider than 18mm.

    The pros:
    * Small lightweight lens perfectly matching the A6000 model range.
    * Overall, just takes really good pics.
    * Very good corner-corner optical performance at F2.8 at all focal lengths. I did some pixel peeping when I got the lens, and the sharpness at the corners does drop a bit in the middle focal length (~30mm) but that clears up at F4. But you won’t notice unless you peep.
    * Auto focus works well, though I do get a few misses.
    * Excellent close performance. I took some product photos when I flogged my old Nikon gear on Ebay, and this lens was great.

    The con:
    * No filter stacking. I like to keep a UV filter on my lens at all time, that way I never need to bother with the lens cap. I also often use a polarising filter which I have always stacked on top of the UV filter. On this lens, this gives you dark corners at the wide end, so I have to remove one filter to put on another. This vignetting could have been cured by a larger filter size, but Sigma chose aesthetics over function. This loses a star from me as it alters the way I want to use the lens. Worth thinking about if you use filter stacking for affects.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI have used this lens to do a couple of shoots now so I have a good feel for the image quality. The lens is small, light, and focuses well in both photo and video modes. The image quality is excellent for a zoom lens. You will get about 90% of prime quality. Now, depending on your what your doing with your photos this may be more than good enough but if you want the absolute best quality then you will need to go to primes. It’s hard to put my finger on what exactly it’s missing but it just doesn’t produce the same quality as my primes but for a zoom it does a very good job.

    – Made in China
    – Seriennummer mit einem Sticker aufgeklebt
    – Sehr viel Plastik

    Fazit:

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersI’m a photographer that shoot most of my stuff while hiking and travelling. Size, Performance and versatility are my three biggest factors. Usually, I have to compromise pretty heavily between them. Last year I hiked in Zion for a week with the Sony 16F2.8, Which was amazing for keeping the weight down on long high-mileage days, and virtually disappeared on the camera. This was in exchange for meh results and a lot of lens flare and aberration. This year I decided to suck up the size, and took a Sigma 16F1.4. The weight was reasonable, and the pictures were amazing, but the lens itself was a chonk and it was frequently in the way. Both of these lenses also lacked versatility, resulting in a lot of shots where I shot wide and sucked it up for a heavy crop in post.

Enter the Sigma 18-50f2.8. Pictures are sharp as a tack, check. Common 55mm Filter size, check. Small package, check. Reasonable weight, functional zoom range, decently wide aperture etc. It frankly does it all, and does it without being fat, heavy, obtrusive or expensive. Is it my favorite lens? No. It’s frankly, just a little boring. It doesn’t have a niche. It is however ASTOUNDINGLY capable. It’s great to watch a player who shoots from half court, has handles like a Globetrotter or will dunk over 3 defenders, but this lens is the guy on the team who is a solid 9/10 in every fundamental and plays everything textbook. It’s not a “fun” lens, but it will absolutely get the job done capably in every situation, in a smaller package and half the price of it’s competitors.

The minor gripes: The focus/zoom rings are annoying. They’re flush with the barrel and I frequently have trouble finding the right one by instinct. They’re smooth, but not intuitive to find. The lens hood when stowed also gets in the way of the rings. There is also no image stabilization. As a photographer, this doesn’t bother me a bit. If you’re a videographer, this will probably be a big problem if you don’t have in-body image stabilization or a gimbal.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI have been constantly impressed the more I use this lens. I have all three Sigma APSC f1.4 primes and this tiny zoom nearly act to replace them all! It is difficult to tell the images apart and this lens is about the same size as the 30mm f1.4. It is beautifully made in Japan to Sigma standard. Auto-focus is fast, accurate and quiet and the approx, 12cm near focus is outstanding for semi-macro work.

Golden Review Award: 33 From Our UsersI ordered this Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 because I just could not decide which was better for me. The Sigma 18-50 was mostly great. It was small, light, and decently sharp. According to all the reviews the Sigma was supposed to be sharper than the Tamron, but that was not the case for me. At first I thought I just had a bad copy, and got a second 18-50. The second was better but the Tamron at 18 and 50mm was still sharper, and the Sigma doesn’t go to 70mm. The Tamron also has slightly warmer colors, and I just kept picking out those photos over the Sigma. In the end I kept the Tamron. The Sigma is still a great little lens, but I preferred the Tamron 17-70.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersPros
    -Super light to carry
    -Amazing auto focus.
-Fast aperture for a zoom lens.
    -Good colour vibrance.
-Sharp enough to use a 60% image crop.
-Good build quality (not the best but -sturdy).
-Has a weather sealing at the end of the lens, so dust and moisture is unlikely to affect camera too much.
-Dont have to change between multiple lenses when travelling (i.e., one lens gives a value of multiple prime lenses, albeit with little bargain on sharpness/subject seperation)
-Pretty cheap in terms of cost of ownership.

    Cons
    -Lacks in lens stabilization.
-Bokeh not as smooth as a prime lens but manageable.
-Some lens distortion when shot in RAW, particularly at the extreme focus lengths 18mm and 50mm – barrel, pin cushion, chromatic aberration – but can be corrected in post. In JPEG, Sony corrects the distortions in camera so not an issue at all.

Overall: Fantastic lens to have in your kit. It’s currently my go to kit, even when going to cover professional obligation.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAmazing lens. Used this with the Sony A6400 & it was a delight to use & I was really happy with the images it produced. Even zoomed all the way in using Lightroom & pixel peeping, you can really see the quality. Super sharp, great bokeh & was really surprised with how small/light this lens was, yet still had a high quality feel.

I ended up selling this lens & purchasing the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 only because I felt I was lacking that extra focal range with the Sigma.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersZoom molto compatto, versatile e tutto sommato economico se paragonato alle altre 2 alternative simili sul mercato, anche se con lunghezze focali differenti, il Sony E 16-55 f2.8 e il Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Riassumo per punti la mia recensione:

    Pro:
    – made in Japan

    Contro:
    – non stabilizzato
    – la protezione da polvere e liquidi parziale
    – avrei voluto un po’ pi di tele

    Conclusione:

    Brava Sigma!

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersI own the Sigma trio (16mm F/1.4, 30mm F/1.4, 56mm F/1.4) and they’re all excellent fast lenses but it’s a pain to carry all three with you and switch between them all the time when you’re out travelling and don’t have the time to do all that.

If you’d rather carry just one versatile lens and don’t expect it to be razer sharp like prime lenses and don’t expect to pay a bomb for it, then this is the best lens money can buy for Sony APS-C sensor cameras right now. Tamron is maybe a close second, but their 17-70mm F/2.8 is much larger and heavier (although it does have vibration compensation) and not to mention, considerably more expensive (around 15K more)

Sure, the 18-50mm F/2.8 DC DN doesn’t have any sort of camera/hand shake compensation but that’s a small price to pay (especially if you have a in-body stabilized camera like the A6600 or have a gimbal or use a tripod). Some stabilization would’ve been nice but then the lens wouldn’t have been this ultra portable in size, super light weight and just a breeze to work with.

EDIT 26-Feb-2022: I added a video of the Sigma 18-50mm lens + Sony A6400 perfectly balanced on a Ronin SC gimbal. Since the entire setup is so light, balancing this on the gimbal was completely effortless. You can probably balance a lot more (mic + a small light) with this setup. Vortex/360 mode was also super smooth with this combo balanced on the SC.

Image quality wise, it’s F/2.8 so it’s not the fastest lens out there but it’s way better than the competition, especially for a zoom lens. Images are STILL tack sharp in many cases, even in low light and even at the widest aperture. There’s some noticeable chromatic aberration but nothing that can’t be explained away as artistic expression. Lol.

I’m still going through this lens and will be taking it with me on several trips and add more photos to this review in time but since I’m cooped up at home right this moment, I don’t have a lot more to say at this point.

All things considered, Sigma didn’t disappoint, not one bit. They make superior lenses that are sharper and faster and cost less than their competition. What’s not to like about that?

NOTE: All photos of the Sony WF-1000XM4 were taken using the Sigma 18-50mm at 50mm using a Sony A6400. More/different photos to come later.

EDIT 26-Feb-2022: Added some more photos taken with the Sony A6400 and Sigma 18-50mm lens

The most affordable high quality zoom lens for Sony APS-C cameras

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIf you’re considering buying this lens – DO IT!! No doubt you’ve read reviews and watched Youtube videos. They’re all right, this is an amazing lens. VERY close to prime lens image quality right across the zoom range. Pin sharp images mean you can crop WAY in and still have high res images. On top of it’s optical performance, the lens is incredibly small and light, and by far the most affordable of the lenses in this sort of zoom range. It’s an genuine bargain. You will not refret buying one.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis lens has been praised in different reviews. Not a single poor review. So I had to test it.

    – Sharp from corner to corner at f4.0, with all focal lengths
    – Fast lens, f2.8 for a zoom
    – Focuses ultra-fast even on A6000.
    – Images at f2.8 are very good, excellent sharpness in the middle.
    – Equivalent from Sony is around 1,400 and seems to be less good. This lens is around 400!!
    – Professional level feel, forget those plasticky kit lenses
    – Tamron has similar offering, not this kind of quality though. Price neary 2x.

In summary, if you have APS-C sensor camera, this is you number 1 lens. Period.
