So simple and leaves the knifes razor Sharpe. Bought the extra fine stones too.
    Knifes are almost surgically shape.

I have this sharpening set on my boat for 25 years and love it. It came in a canvas case. This new one I bought for my house is as good but the case is cumbersome and the option of two angles is confusing

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is easy to use and is good for maintaining the edge on knives that don’t need a lot of work. You can get coarser stones for the Sharpmaker if you need to reprofile a blade, but the two sets of stones that come as standard are not particularly aggressive and are better suited to blades that aren’t completely full.

I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker on my Spyderco UKPK and on my Victorinox Swiss army knives. For completely blunt kitchen knives (and the like), I use a Lansky Blade Medic with its tungsten carbide sharpener to tear vast amounts of steel off the blades and get them back to a standard that the Spyderco Sharpmaker could actually work on.

    Pros:
    – easy to use;
    – effective on blades that aren’t totally blunt;
    – produces a very, very sharp edge;
    – compact package that sets-up in seconds.

    Cons:
    – not much use on completely blunt blades.

Easy to use and makes knives very, very sharp

I’ve sharpened kitchen and pocket knives to a super sharp finish. I can’t quite get the razor finish. Maybe I need a bit more practice. However really pleased with this purchase.

This did an excellent job on a range of knives and other bladed items.

The manufacturers have opinions and convey you them, which is excellent; for example, they recommend cutting angles and say why.

The devices comes with two “medium” ceramic stones and two “fine” ones. All these stones are triangular in profile. The main advantage over “plain” stones is that the device keeps the grinding angle consistent — not by clamping the knife, like some ultra-expensive devices, but by having you keep it vertical (which is fairly easy), with the stones angled, rather than you holding the knife at an angle to a horizonal stone. The basic sharpening sequence advised is 20 strokes per side for (a) medium, using the edge/corner; (b) medium, using the flat; (c) fine, using the corner; and (d) fine, using the flat. If you have knives that have been particularly abused (e.g. put through a dodgy wheel-based sharpening device) then I found it helpful to start with 20-40 strokes per side with a diamond “stone” (Spyderco SPY-204D Tri-Angle Diamond Sharpener, sold separately) to get the edge back to the right shape. (Possibly the medium stone would have done the job given a lot of patience, but this was definitely helpful.)

The booklet and DVD (or YouTube video) also show you how to sharpen things other than “plain” knives — such as serrated blades, scissors, potato peelers, and so on.

The whole thing is definitely pricier than cheap wheel-based or scraping sharpeners, but there are much more expensive things out there too. Good value, I think.

Expensive, but not as expensive as spending money on knives you don’t use because they’re dull. I suggest you watch the instructional video on YouTube before buying. The trick in using is to make sure the knife is absolutely vertical as you use it.

overall this is a good, easy solution to keep your knives sharp although slightly limited with the 2 grits that come with the package. If your knives are very blunt then you would need to get the diamond rods and if you want to get a really refined edge you would need to get the ultra fine rods.
none of my knives were really blunt and i got a very respectable edge on them with the kit rods and a little practice!

I’ve purchased over a dozen sharpening systems. The best one is Tormek so far, but it is also a bit complicated and requires training to achieve good results… and it is EXPENSIVE. This one however is the 2nd best! With the additional ultra-fine triangle stones you can get your knife as sharp as the with the Tormek system. Highly recommended.

The only negative part is that it takes time. Damascus knife sharpening will take you about 5 minutes, but if you want to sharpen some old cheap and probably damaged blade/knife – then it might take you 20-30 minutes, no matter that the ads say that it should happen in 5-10 mins. 🙂 Anyway, it is very good!

very effective sharpener – when sharpening a knife for the first time I found it worth marking the edge with a black marker pen so you can see what part of the grind is being abraded by the sharpener. A few of my knives needed significant regrinding (probably the result of my poor sharpening technique from prior attempts with a wet stone) before the 40 degree angle was working on the cutting edge. When I’d managed this I was able to get a razor sharp edge by following the process in the instructions. This is the first sharpener ive used which consistently gives a better than new level of sharpness to my knives. recommended.

This is pretty easy to use and give a nice edge to your knives. This is not something you can use if you have nicks in the blade or you need to fully re-edge, but for everything else, it is a great sharpener.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy favourite tool in the house!
I’d bought a cheap sharpening stone previously and found it messy and time consuming – a complete waste of money. Then I came across the Spyderco sharpener.
    OMG! It is superb!
Far cheaper than a japanese sharpening stone and very little skill required to use it. Watch the video that comes in the package and break in the edges as the demo states. Within 10 minutes a knife will have a razor edge and no mess. I can now shave the hairs on my arm with my kitchen & pocket knives!
A superb bit of kit. Excellent design and packs away neatly in its little box making it handy at home and portable for the camping trips. It can sharpen literally anything as advertised.
Definately a must for any household!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI bought this for my smaller knives which were already fairly sharp.

Having watched the videos, I thought that it would be fairly easy to touch up a knife to maintain its razor sharp edge.

So far, it has been very hit and miss and all I have done is make some of my knives blunter.

I had no problems getting to grips with the edge pro sharpening system which I use for my larger knives but cant get the hang of this.

Will update score and share what I was doing wrong if I figure it out but for now it deserves no more than one star

Edit, After a bit more trial and error, I am starting to get the hang of the sharpmaker now.

My main hurdle was the rods became ingrained with the metal from sharpening the first few knives and therefore no longer worked.

Also many of my knives were sharpened at angles somewhere inbetween the 30 and 40 degrees offered by the sharpmaker. As the grits are not course enough to reprofile and I was trying to sharpen at a new angle, I was seeing no results.

Cleaning the rods with a wire brush and barkeepers friend after sharpening each knife brings them back to life.

Still not as easy as advertised and the grits arent course enough for reprofiling but it can touch up knives already sharpened to either 30 or 40 degrees.

I have traditionally sharpened my knives with whetstones. Whilst you can achieve a finer finish with quality whetstones, they take many years to master. The Sharpmaker couldn’t be easier to use. Bought one for my sister, who is an avid cook with once blunt knives. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersAfter reading about lots of different techniques and products for sharpening knives I finally settled on this after some glowing reviews from around the internet and I must admit I am very very happy with this product.

The first knife I sharpened was a cheap, yet brilliant, Victorinox pairing knife which had been slowly getting duller and duller for the past few months. Within 10 minutes it was razor sharp again and as good as new. With the included brass rods I never worried about cutting myself either.

The instructions come in DVD form and in a manual and are very easy to follow but I would definitely invest a few minutes paying close attention to them as I think it would be as easy to ruin a knife as it is to sharpen it. In a nutshell however you start with the brown stones in the 40 degree holes and run the blade, held perpendicular, down the edge of the stones 40 times (20 each side in turn). You then do the same again on the flat of the brown stones before moving on and repeating the same process on the white stones. The one tip that I cannot stress enough is to not let the tip of the knife run off the stones as this will quickly round the tip and you will have a time re-profiling again.

After building up a bit of confidence with the sharpening system I sharpened a few of my more expensive pocket knives and the results were just as impressive. All in all I would recommend this to anyone who wants to keep a few kitchen knives sharp to anyone with a keener interest in knives.

I have had a few different knife sharpeners for keeping our fish filleting knives sharp on our pleasure fishing boat and to be honest most of them have either fallen apart or ruined the knives.
This sharpener has no such problems and once your knives are worked on it for a while to bring them into line with the sharpener then its a simple few strokes as needed to keep them sharp, ime no expert knife sharpener but ime finding it easy to use even on a moving boat.
Simple design ,well made and works ..

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to sharpen my chef knives… but DONT! Most kitchen knives are sharpened to a much smaller angle than 45 or even 30 degrees. It works great for other tools, so I kept it and will use it, just not for chef knives.

This is a well made product, which has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. The instruction video is very helpful, and demonstrates how versatile this product really is. It can sharpen just about everything that has a sharp edge.
I’ve only used on a few penknives so far, but it has worked very well – much more effective that the simple alternatives where you just drag a blade between two angled surfaces.

Make sure you buy the diamond rods if you have very dull knives that need reshaping. The standard rod would take forever to do that.

    Really like this sharpener.
Bit of a learning curve – watch Youtube video first – on longer kitchen knives.
Tip – start sharpening on shorter blades, maybe 4″ or so, then progress up.

Clean he stones between uses with Cif abrasive cream.

Fantastic piece of kit. Works like a dream on knives that have lost their edge.

For the exceptionally blunt knives which have been neglected for too long, I have added the diamond stones from the Spyderco range (from the US Amazon store where they were cheaper).

You won’t regret buying this item.

I bought it to keep my kitchen knives reasonably sharp and it does the job perfectly. Takes just a few minutes per knife to sharpen a blade that won’t even cut paper to the point where it will cut thin strips out of a shop receipt. Probably with a bit more effort I can get even “shaving sharp” out of it but I don’t feel the need to have that on the average kitchen knife. Really easy to use as well.
As another reviewer mentioned, the coarse stone is not that coarse so a really dull knife will take some time but that’s kind of expected.

Really good product. Small and compact, so it’s easy to store as well. At first sight it seems like there are lots of bits, but watch the tutorial and it’s an easy 1-2-3. I spent an hour sharpening all our kitchen and camping knives, and they retain their sharp edge for quite a while. For those who don’t know the kit can also be used for bread knives, chisels, nail-clippers, and so on. It’s very versatile and simple to use. I would recommend this to anyone considering buying a sharpening stone / oil as a better bet overall. I have both, and would only use the stone for taking out nicks and burrs before using the Spyderco sharpener to put a proper edge on the blade.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersNo matter what knife you have it will eventually start to loose its edge. This is why it is important to sharpen your knives on a regular basis. You can use a whetstone or sharpening steel, however I prefer an easy to use sharpening system that requires no skill. This is where the Spyderco comes in. The system is made up of two sets of ceramic stones, one for the heavy work, and one for the finishing work. You can sharpen scissors, and both plain and serrated edged blades, and it requires no honing oil.

The basic process for sharpening involves twenty swipes along the corner of the heavy sharpening rods, then another twenty on the flat side. After that, you do another twenty swipes along the corner of the finishing sharpening rods, then another twenty on the flat side. The rods are set in the stand to the correct angle, so it is important to ensure that your blade is vertical for each stroke.

All in all I do love my Spyderco and you will no longer find a dull blade in the house.

Excellent. I wish I’d bought this kit years ago. After watching a few youtube videos and practising with a cheap kitchen knife I plunged in and sharpened my best Spyderco knife and Khalsa kirpan without causing any damage. It’s easy and I got both blades far sharper than factory new on my first try. I used only the fine grit rod and didn’t go sharper than the 40 degree ‘corners’ with the second blade as was entirely happy with the cutting performance achieved.

Impressive delivery from Amazon; I didn’t expect a Sunday parcel especially as I’d chosen the free delivery option!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersKnife a bit dull? This will get it sharp. If the blade is really dull or has nicks, this sharpener will not perform miracles. Nor will it get knives razor sharp, unless I’m doing something wrong. The instructional DVD looks like a QVC infomercial but at least it’s useful. The stones need regular cleaning to keep them effective. For best results, use this in conjunction with the Lansky Puck Lansky Sharpeners The Puck Dual Grit Sharpener – Grey . Use the Puck for sharpening and repairs, and this product for fine honing and serrated blades.

This system is awesome, I have a s30v blade on my Leatherman Charge TTI and I’ve manged to make it sharp enough to shave stubble.
The only thing that you need to consider before buying this item is if your knives are too worn down to sharpen with ceramic stones. You can buy the additional diamond coated rods if you need to aggressively rebevel your knife. But I would recommend getting a professional to do a touch-up with a belt-grinder. Much faster and it will only be required once as you can keep your knives maintained with the sharp maker from that point forward.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI had researched that this sharpening system was one of the best. It’s expensive but such an important part of maintaining your tools it’s proven to be a worthwhile investment. It’s very easy to use and I instantly saw the results.

Included are two different grit of stones; a grey, coarse stone and a white, fine grit stone. The grey one is capable of producing a good working edge, sharp enough to slice through paper with no issues. Moving on to the white stones will then produce a razor sharp edge, capable of shaving hairs or even shaving paper.

I first tested this on two folding knives which had an ok edge to start with, just not particularly sharp. They were razor sharp within 5 minutes just by using the white stones. I then tried some kitchen knives, one of which was just plain dull. Working through the steps outlined in the instruction booklet (greater detail provided in the accompanying DVD) I was able to bring them back to a razor sharp edge.

So far it has handled everything I’ve tried with it (knives, nail clippers, scissors, picks…) and given great results. It’s super easy to use since you only need to make sure your blade remains vertical as you draw it down the stone. No water or oil is required either.

  41. HilarioTimm says:

I took the plunge and bought this after watching a few reviews online. They were all very positive and emphasised the simplicity of getting a good edge on a blade.
I’m a diesel electrician and my Leatherman multitool has come to my rescue many times over the years. It gets lots of use, and if I’m honest, abuse, at the train depot I work at. Consequently the knives need a lot of attention to maintain a constant edge.
I’d previously tried the Accusharp which was considerably cheaper and probably simpler to use but couldn’t achieve anything like this can.
If you’re at all serious about your tools I couldn’t recommend this kit higher. As I’ve seen in other reviews, there could be a problem if your edge is completely and truly blunt, as the sharpening tools you receive are medium and fine grit. But even then, a coarse stone is available separately.

  42. Niraj Ranjan Rout says:

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersSo I needed a knife sharpener that worked properly; one that sharpens my the SV30 steel blade on my new Leatherman Charge TTi (I had originally intended to get a much cheaper model…). Did the usual internet research and this came up again and again. A knife sharpener; that retails at about 100; even at this Amazon price, is still ludicrously expensive. No matter, it’s the best and being a modern man, only the best will do – after all I can’t possibly suffer the crushing embarrassment of a less-than-razor-sharp pair of nail clippers.
So a few days later (slightly vague ordering process, no tracking but arrived sooner than expected) it arrived. Open the small A4 sized package and I seem to have paid 70 for a small plastic box containing a few sticks. Oooookay

So I stick on the DVD; ignore the cheesy advertorial style and a rather affable chap who clearly lives for sharpness soon charms you into sharpening anything from your best knife to your dogs claws; with consummate ease.
I can now do the “shave off my arm hair” trick with anything remotely resembling a blade – even my keys.

So yes it’s a LOT of money but this is what you pay for owning the Top Gun elite of blade sharpeners that even a child (not recommended) could use.

I’m a knife collector of four decades, and my father taught me how to sharpen knives correctly many years ago. The Sharpmaker doesn’t stray from the traditional methods like many of the new-fangled “gadgets” which are simply not worth any money at all, let alone what they cost. No, this tool simply gives you a way of maintaining a consistent angle, which is the single greatest key to a hair-whittling edge. The two grades of stone provided will suit any already well-maintained blade. You’ll need a coarser stone to bring something back from the dead, though!

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis is a great solution to keeping knives sharp. I use the Lansky Standard Sharpening System for annual maintenance but it’s tedious to setup and takes a while to use. Its limitations are especially clear on larger blades.

The sharpmaker sets up on the kitchen counter quickly, and really works exceptionally well for keeping blades in good condition.
