It’s pretty straightforward and simple. I use it to connect two external displays to my laptop and it works exactly as I expected it would. It also arrived sooner than I expected, so that was a great plus.

I searched for a long time to find an adapter that will extend the Mac screens so I could do my homework on a bigger screen! Most of the adapters I found only mirrored the Mac. I found this one that states it would extend and received it today. It works!! I have 3 screens set up and it is so nice!!

Gets pretty hot. Otherwise would give it 5 stars. Still works fine. Make sure you pad it with something to give it some space – if close to another device – like an SSD.

For anyone wondering, this will absolutely work with the latest 2021 MacBook Pro’s. Instantly outputs 4K at 60Hz to both monitors with no configuration at all.

I ordered this dual display hub as a cheaper alternative than spending 200-350 on a Dell dock for my home office and could not be happier. I am able to run 2 QHD displays @144hz though DP cables without any issues. As long as you do not need the additional USB ports from a full dock, this is a very good option for multi-display functionality at significantly less cost.

I’ve had this for a couple of months now, using it with a Dell XPS and two Asus 2k screens via Display Port. It just seems to work fine and solidly for hours on end with no glitches. I’m only using it for regular work so the 60hz on both screens is perfectly fine.

Best purchase this year, there aren’t many splitters that allow macs to be extended over three screens( 2 monitors and the Mac screen). Ona side note the customer service is also amazing, I’ve dealt with this company a few times and the customer support is so good!

Using the windows only version to get my Dell XPS 15 to display to 2 x external 24″ Dell monitors. Worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it in. I configured the power setting on my XPS to do nothing when closing the lid so I can leave the laptop lid closed and just use my external monitors to make working from home easier than hunched over a laptop screen all day. Add an external USB keyboard and mouse for full working from home comfort.

This is an excellent device that works perfectly with Linux despite the “Windows Only” description. I use it to connect a work laptop running Ubuntu (20.04) to dual 4K 60Hz monitors and it worked straight away with no set-up or configuration needed.

I bought this to solve an annoying problem I had with Startech’s other very similar looking TB3 monitor adapter, the one with dual HDMI ports at 4K 60Hz. I was using that one before, but it suffered from washed-out colours on the monitors, which I discovered is a known (and still unresolved) problem with Intel integrated graphics and TB3 monitor adapters that use HDMI.

As soon as I plugged this in instead I could tell the colours were fixed, and it’s been running every day for the last few weeks without trouble. So if you’re on Linux and want to connect a TB3 device to dual 4k 60Hz monitors, I’d highly recommend picking this up (it’s far smaller and cheaper than an external GPU), even if that means buying displayport to HDMI adapters, as it’ll work without any hassle and won’t suffer from any colour issues. It also runs cooler than the HDMI equivalent and is even a bit smaller in size.

I have been looking for a while at how to create a duo independant display setup to use with my macbook air 2018 (OS Catalina). I also have 2 Hanns-G 24″ screens. Just plug in play around with your screen arrangement, no need to download any drivers either. Works perfectly. No lag between the screens either. I just have to say thank you to the tech people at StarTech.com who guided me through through to which product would be suitable. The price was pretty amazing too. Got it on here for 87.30 RRP 165.59. StarTech website doesnt do it that cheap, but the tech people are amazing.

This adapter works perfectly. I use it to connect my Thunderbolt 3 laptop to my Caldigit TS2 docking station. The main problem it has is the “embedded” USB-C cable. It is very short and therefore fiorces you to keep the device next to the laptop. This is not always practical. For example, if you have a laptop stand on your desk, or even a laptop arm to place your laptop, the adapter will generally hang from the laptop in the air, applying tension to the wire.

I have a laptop arm which is the worst as the laptop is quite high from the desk. I used double-sided tape to attach the device under the tray of the arm and run my TB2 cable from the device through the arm down to the docking station. Even so, doing a 180 turn with the cable to insert into the laptop is very tight and I think will eventually wear the cable out.

I would prefer it if I could stick (with double-sided tape) the adapter on my docking station instead, but this is not possible due to the length of the attached cable.

A much better design would’ve been if they simply had two female ports (TB3 and TB2) so you can run your own TB3 and TB2 cables, of whatever length you need. This would’ve been much more versatile and reduced the cost of the device.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLike many people who have bought a new Apple laptop recently. The move to USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 has been extremely disruptive. I spent a fortune on new accessories. One thing I wasn’t prepared to do was throw away my Belkin hubs and Apple Cinema monitors. I tried Apple’s own Thunderbolt 2 – Thunderbolt 3 adapters; and they worked inconsistently. One day I would switch on my computer and the monitor or hub wouldn’t work. For no reason. StarTech are a respected video brand, who used to make a well respected Thunderbolt 2 hub, so in desperation I decided to give their adaptors a chance.

Let’s get the negative aspects about them out of the way first. They are bulky, with the electronics coming in a case about the size of a stack of playing cards, rather than a small pack of chewing gum like Apple’s own convertors. They’re in a shade of dark grey only a sys.admin could love.

But once you get over these cosmetic issues you get a product that just works. It is ironic that I had to go to a non-Apple supplier to get this most Apple of attributes. I can wholeheartedly recommend these convertors.

Using this box, I’ve finally been able to use my BlackMagic ultrastudio mini recorder on my new laptop (which doesn’t have thunderbolt). And it works faultlessly. I’ve tried it direct into the USB-C port on the laptop and via a USB-C hub, when the hub was also driving three monitors and receiving 56 channel audio over USB, and it was still rock solid. It gets a little warm, but much less than any of the BlackMagic boxes.

Have given this a 4 because although it works it should have a slot to connect a C-USB cable in addition to the 2 x HDMI slots.
Otherwise the HDMI connectors provide you with a duel set of screens which work fine.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI got a new Windows Laptop (Dell Latitude 7480) which has a USB-C connection on it. I used the StarTech adapter to use my Apple Thunderbolt display with the Dell laptop. I plugged the adapter in the laptop and the Apple Display fired up instantly, no setup required. I can now use my Apple Thunderbolt Display using the normal windows option such as duplicating/extending my laptop screen.

Works really well on my Asus UX501 laptop USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port to connect to a Black Magic Intensity Shuttle video capture box (Thunderbolt 1 at 10Gbps). Provides the pass-thru power needed by the Shuttle without a problem (and it needs quite a lot of power as it gets pretty warm in use). Didn’t need to install any drivers for Windows 10; it just worked out of the box.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWorks perfectly under Linux (Ubuntu 17.10) on a Dell XPS-13-9360. Unlike the 30Hz version of this which worked for a period of time and then seems to cut off one, alternate between them, or both – I guess because it was overheating(?) – this one seems to run very smoothly. I’ve been using it for a day and a half already and no problems at all. I had been forced to use Windows in order to use my Dell DisplayLink dock (since DisplayLink doesn’t work under Linux very well at all, if at all), but now I can stick to Linux – I’ve not even bothered to try this on Windows because it has been rock solid. Startech don’t support Linux, but it works very well indeed – I guess they don’t due to a matter of support personnel/training, rather than the device itself.
BTW, even though I am using Linux, my config is dual boot, so I can test on Windows too; so I they did support me for the 30Hz version (it had the same behaviour on Windows) – and they give really good customer support.

Correction, this doesn’t work well with the larger monitors, and I have to wonder about the long term reliability with the two Dells (I’ve not tried them yet). The issue is that this is designed to run at 30Hz, and the monitors are at 60Hz. It works for a while, sometimes even a long while, but eventually it becomes unreliable – I presume it is overheating or something like that. There is an identical looking 60Hz model of this, so I advise getting that; and that is what I am going to get (not tested it yet) – as an addition, it claims to support Apple computers, so there is even more certainty that it will support Linux (though this one seemed to too – so long as you’re driving 30Hz monitors).

I’m not the kind of person who leaves reviews very often but I feel that this device deserves it.

I’m using this with a Dell XPS 9360 and it just … works. I can run 2 Displayport monitors & my laptop monitor all at the same time in extended mode with negligible system resource. This device really does just do what it says on the tin.

Also, shout out to StarTech support. I had a query for them about something related to Thunderbolt and the person on the other end of the live chat got exactly what I was talking about straight away and was able to point me in the right direction. Genuine breath of fresh air to speak with someone who knows what they’re talking about after buying their device. Kudos.

I used this item to connect two Dell U2417H monitors to a Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop. To do this I bought two HDMI – HDMI 1 mtr cables from Wilko at 2 each, and made all three screens work independently by interfacing them with this StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Dual HDMI Adapter – 4K 30Hz – (Windows Only Compatible). I’m running with Windows 10 and it was “plug and play”. (My system is not 4K, but the adapter works anyway). All three screens appeared in “Display Manager”, and were simple to configure. Only one problem on setting up, the system was silent, when I added the adapter it diverted the sound from the laptop speakers to the non existent speakers in the monitors, knowing that, it was a simple task to reverse the process and set the laptop speakers as the default. The Adapter works hard and gets warm, this is to be expected, it’s not too hot to handle. The lead from the Adapter to the Thunderbolt port is 12 inches long; I would prefer longer, but it’s not a problem. The Startech help desk was fast, knowledgeable and helpful. Update: Its now 26 June 2018, and I have experienced no problems with the above set up running 8-12 hours a day/365.

Moving away from Apple laptops I was worried that wouldn’t be able to continue using my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen.

This device worked on my XPS13 9360 running on Linux Ubuntu 17.04. I was able to drive my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen (and integrated audio in it) as a second display. Worked first time, no driver needed, no problem (Linux rocks…).

Only caveat was that I was not able to use the USB or the network adaptor at the back of the screen. It seems that the thunderbolt adaptor sees the display as an HDMI device only rather than as a docking station (which is should normally be with a Mac). However it was my main goal to be able to reuse this unusual screen which does not have standard connectors like HDMI or Display Port, etc… This Startech adaptor meant I didn’t have had to sell my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersNOTICE: This review is primarily for those who build their own computers or are looking to build one in the future (it’s fun and not that hard!)

For anyone wondering if this will let you connect an Apple Thunderbolt 1440p display to your Windows PC, the answer is, well… maybe. It’s a complicated process that will take up much more of your time than you would probably like, but after a bit of tinkering I got it to work, so it’s definitely possible.

When I arrived at my new video editing job, my first task was to build a new video editing rig, since I wasn’t too keen on the 2009 quad-core Mac Pro my predecessor had been using. The only thing was, sitting there unused and sad was a very nice 27″ Thunderbolt Display. Since this is an excellent panel I wanted to use it on the Windows 10 rig I was about to build, but upon further research I discovered this may be a much more difficult task than plug-and-play.

See, Thunderbolt Displays will ONLY work with a thunderbolt port, you cannot simply get a mini Displayport to Displayport adapter like you can with an Apple Cinema Display, which are older and use mini Displayport instead of Thunderbolt (even though they look identical). Your options for buying motherboards with Thunderbolt equipped is very slim, but they do sell PCI cards that let you add Thunderbolt ports to your system. I purchased the Asus X99-Deluxe II motherboard, which comes with the Asus Thunderbolt EX3 card included.

I needed this adapter because the EX3’s thunderbolt port is the latest standard, which uses the USB-C form factor. If I would have done more research I maybe wouldn’t have needed to get this adapter, but no use complaining now and besides, the X99 deluxe II is a glorious beast.

However, when I first plugged everything in and fired up my machine, nothing happened. I downloaded the drivers, went through settings, enabled Intel Thunderbolt in my motherboard’s BIOS, still nothing! I was ready to return this and give up, but I researched and researched, changed some more BIOS settings, then a day later–WHAMO–it worked! Now I have a beastly dual-1440p panel setup.

So, the important things to know if you’re looking to purchase this card to connect an Apple Thunderbolt Display:
    – You will have to tinker with it, possibly for multiple days before it works.
    – It will require you to mess around in your computer’s BIOS settings. This can be intimidating to first-timers.
    – Do your research! This is an expensive adapter and you don’t want to get it then find out you also have to purchase pricey computer components to make it work.

    My system:
    Mobo: Asus X99-Deluxe II
    Expansion Card: Asus Thunderbolt EX3
    CPU: Intel i7-5820K 4ghz overclock
GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 OC black edition w/thermal pad mod
    RAM: 64GB G.Skill ripjaws V series DDR4-3200
Storage: OS on 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, several other standard HDDs
    Display 1: 27-inch 1440p BenQ BL2711U
    Display 2: 27-inch 1440p Apple Thunderbolt Display
