I have just begun using this server with Unraid installed as the OS. I found the installation of new drives extremely easy and the drives run cool. The build itself has a nice industrial look and there is a good selection of drive LEDs to see which drives are active.

Thanks to the built in USB drive Unraid was extremely easy to install. Having two ethernet ports and USB is also great. Although I believe the HDMI is not meant for video output I was able to access the BIOS using a USB keyboard and make any necessary changes. Even the Unraid command line was available via HDMI which is great.

Only other thing I would have liked to see is a 2nd M.2 slot.

I bought this as a replacement to my ageing NAS and a small server I was running at home to combine the two in one machine. The build quality is really great and the machine has been running smooth and far exceeding my old setup. The Celeron processor is just right as it balances power consumption with enough power to run a media server and a few docker instances with ease. TOS (The operating system which comes with the NAS) is intuitive and easy to use so I kept this as it fits my needs well. Advanced users with more specific requirements also have the option to use other 3rd Party NAS OS.

After days of research, I decided to replace my Synology DS918+ with the Terramaster T12-423 and I am glad I made that move. The Hardware itself is robust and of premium quality. Under the hood, it looks immaculate and organised. The added HDMI connection is brilliant for various reasons, including troubleshooting via CLI should I ever experience connection issues. I am still testing this unit, but overall this was a fantastic purchase and I would highly recommend it. TOS 5 is a great software and very fluid and has most of the stuff that I have seen and needed in DSM 7.

    Pro:
    – 12 Bay NAS for such a great price (Got it on Amazon Prime Deal)
    – Compatible with many Hard Drives and doesn’t warn about third-party HDDs like Synology does
    – Ability to install a different NAS Software if desired
    – Support is Fast, literally instantly and you don’t have to wait for days
    – Customer service on Terramaster website is very knowledgeable
    – 2x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Ports (This is fantastic and works great in SMB Multi Channel)
    – 2x USB 3.0 (Perfect for my needs to connect my UPS and External Hard Drive for Backups)
    – PSU is easily replaceable should it break
    – Cooling Design is brilliant, HDDs stay between 35-41C when under load

    Cons:
    – Only 1x M.2 Slot
    – Mixing different RAM brands other than Terramasters’ would not work with their TOS 5

5.0 out of 5 stars T12-423 - Excellent and Premium Hardware, Great Value for Money!

It took me a while to decide whether to proceed with purchasing this as some reviews were quite mixed. I must say I am very impressed with it! Much smaller than expecting and very easy to setup and explore the settings. TOS is easy to navigate (I am coming from using DSM on a Synology). I’ve installed 6 HDDs and setup as RAID0, and then added a DAS through USB3 and set that up as a seperate volume for backups.

Really straightforward and a great system! Very happy with my purchase!

Good performance either in raw disk as through the network (I had 220MB/s with TRAID 5), but the TOS user experience is not as good as QTS or DSM, and the app also are a bit behind altough it has all the essentials one (multimedia, backup, cloud, etc). TRAID is and advantage against QTS. I have big expectations on the external array box connected through USB (D6-423 for example) since it appears it is fully supported by the TRAID either each drive alone or external raid.

Now the worst: The UI lags behind. For example, when you add a disk to the TRAID it is working behind the scenes without any kind of feedback, until 5 minutes later that shows the raid reconstruction progress. You do not know if it is really doing anything. You must to wait to the end before adding a second new drive, including full array sync (hours).
NOT all the NAS drives are compatible, check the list first.
The NVME are only x1 so you could have a max of 1.000MB/s, and you NEED a heatsink on them. ALSO there is a maximum of HyperCache that you could use that depends on the RAM of the NAS. With the default 4Gb you could only add 288Gb!! (I had bought a 2Tb x 2 NVMe sticks!!!)
When you change certain things (HyperCache for example), it dismount the Volume1 and everything is stopped for an unknow time… Cifs/NFS/Web UI included… And no clue when it will come back.

4.0 out of 5 stars T6-423: Good hardware/performance/price relation, but software a bit behind

The T6-423 is a really good unit. In my opinion the build quality is as good as it gets and the noise level is super low, when standing by it I can barely hear it. When next to a PC I cant hear it at all.

    currently I have the config 3x 16TB HDD Raid-5, 3x 4TB HDD Raid-5 and 2x 2GB NVMe Raid-1.

generally the T6-423 has 3 purposes and never really have any performance problems with the config I have.

My son likes to store the countless videos he makes playing games that he is preparing for his pending youtube channel.
i backup all my raw photos and lightroom photo catalogs
i store and run virtual machines from the T6-423 for my home lab (I work in IT).

On the support rating. Normally I don’t like rating support without having used them and it just so happens I did have to. I originally setup the T6-423 with 3x 16TB drives and then imported the 3x 4TB from an existing terramaster unit I had that was failing, the reason for buying the T6-423. Within a short amount of time I had a member of the support team logging into the unit to address the issue. Overall very happy with the time to support and support given.

Word of warning if upgrading the ram. i brought a 16GB stick but it wasn’t on the compatible list and the unit refused to boot. This has been fixed in the firmware 5.1.24. So if you do buy a T6-423 and extra ram, before you install the ram make sure the firmware is at or newer than 5.1.24 else it will not boot.

Overall, super happy with the T6-423 and recommend it.

Great hardware. If all you want is a good NAS unit this is the best. BUT I wanted more apps like my private version of drop box without the security issues. I sent this back and bought Synology DS423+. Which is a lower hardware spec but amazing secure software.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe product is neat and easy to install. Because I had problems, I was offered a RAM upgrade for free. They take it very serious and I think it is worth installing.

Please be mindful that tech support is abroad but good on replies. 8AM is 4PM their end.
