Western digital once again prove they have the best price to performance on the market. It’s not a massive price difference compared to Samsung and other brands but it’s nice to save a little. Only downside is the lower endurance but I doubt the average consumer will ever wear one of these out.
I used this SSD for my new Gaming Rig I was building. It is easy to install if you have all the right tools required for the job, as my motherboard required additional pillar and a screw with PH1 screw driver bit in order to secure the ssd into the motherboard.
But the SSD drive is very good, boots my computer in no time, lasts about 5 seconds and I’m already on my desktop.
I recommend it for any board that supports an M.2 slot.
Just built an entry level rig with an i5 Rocket Lake, paired with an MSI Tomahawk wifi and 16gb ram. With this SSD I am able to load Windows in 8-10 seconds, amazing! It’s so fast, and silent and for the price you can’t be beaten. I’ve also bought an SN850 GEN4 as a benchmark, that doesn’t boot Windows any quicker but I’ll report game for game loading. Otherwise, the Gen3 is amazing, find the right price and go for it.
I have added this as a secondary drive in an Asus laptop used for gaming, work related and everyday tasks such as photo editing etc. Seems to work flawlessly, obviously it’s too early to vouch for reliability. Laptop is pretty much on 24/7 and only really goes off it not used for over a day or putting in bag to take somewhere, so is probably a good test for the drive. The drive has been absolutely fine. I found that when transferring around 400gb of files onto the drive the write speeds were very stable and does reach the quoted speeds, the machine is heavily used also. Lets come back to this in a year time and see how she performs. Based on the other SSD installed in the machine (Intel) no compatibility issues and Based on other SSD’s I’ve come across I can’t really fault it. Loading times on new games are rapid even on MS Flight Sim 2020.
My other nmve (corsair) stopped being recognised by the computer (broke) so I decided to buy a name I trust. So far it’s all good, it works and it’s fast. If there are any changes to the reliability then I will update.

Upgrade for old standard SSD. Very easy to install and was able to use software to clone my current SSD to this. Boot time is now around 6 seconds down from around 30 seconds of the old (if you boot from hard disk the difference will be unbelievable). Lovely quality and looks great in the case. Maybe when I’ve got some money I’ll upgrade to a bigger capacity.
Not much to say, it was extremely easy to install for my first ever build.
It loads the customs map on tarkov in around 20 seconds for me, (might differ my memory isn’t amazing).
Easy to install and set up under the disc management wizard in Windows 10. Be sure you have a spare NVMe SSD slot in your laptop before buying. Most laptops post 2015 have the required extra M.2 slot.
Bought to upgrade to bigger capacity. It does feel like its bit faster than my older one was. I have been using it about a month now, so far all good.
Bought this drive to replace my main Windows storage device, a Samsung 860 EVO SSD.
I have two more WD drives: a WD Blue for media and another WD, Black model, for games.
I could’ve gone with the Samsung NVME, but this one was slightly cheaper and it came with a heat sink.
Now I can view and manage all of my drives with a single app, which is a bonus.
I’ve not done any benchmarks, but the drive feels faster than an SSD.
Windows loads faster from a cold boot and apps in general are a bit snappier than when I was using my old SSD.
I purchased this 1T SSD from Amazon with some concern intended to replace my 256 SSD of my Macbook Pro 2014. I used the adaptor https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08HPGZL8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and followed the instructions written in this adaptor. With careful movements, you can replace the disk and install again your Mac Os from an external USB disk. The WD 1T SSD is fantastic, with no signs of rising temperatures in demanding use (I read this was the case in a previous model of WD). At an excellent price, I think this is the best solution for your Macbook Pro, a real bargain. Very pleased.
Very easy to install, no M2 screw provided though so make sure you either have one, they usually come in a bag with the motherboard.
Took all of 10 mins to install WD Acronis imaging software and clone my old SSD with no experience of the software and it is a straight clone in every respect.
The speeds are as advertised, the caveat being many of those Crystal Disk mark benches screencapped on Amazon are using different settings so if youre scratching your head wondering why they have XY and Z speeds this is most likely the reason.
Personally I see no difference between this and my old SSD, I dont notice the improvements enough to recommend it as a straight upgrade over SATA SSDs so its something to consider. The service from amazon was excellent.

This is now the home for Windows 10 Pro and Applications. I installed it on the Asus B550-E Gaming WiFi with processing coming from the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X. It was recognised easily when the time came to install the Operating System. Everything is running fine and blazingly fast.
Brought a 1/2tb one that plugged in and just worked. Set to x4 on motherboard getting 5 x my standard ssd. Got a 1tb one now as well just for games, they seem to load a lot faster.
Easy to install and is very fast to boot and all. However the read and write speeds aren’t exactly to the description they have provided.
Also with the WD Black Dashboard with the gaming mode enabled, i actually got lower read and write than without the gaming mode. Strange.
But definitely worth the money and was super easy to install

Easy to install great nvme SSD as a boot drive. Got a 1tb one to store games and all my apps on it and they load A LOT quicker then a mechanical hard drive. Can’t really go back once you’ve used an SSD. Definitely want to get this over a normal 2.5″ sata SSD. Similar price with many more benefits such as high read and right speeds when doing multiple tasks like downloading 9 games and playing another one at once. Also no cable management so.
Got this.as a fast caching drive for processing images – USB-C for fast transfer in a low-cost, lightweight housing.
Easy to install and use and absolutely no requirement to use WD’s software.
The model without heatsink has a sticker over the chips and a slim heatsink/cover on the back; to use a third-party heatsink the WD serial number/etc. sticker peels off easily and can be put on the back. It leaves to residue for secure heatsink attachment.
No special advice, no caveats – the 500GB one is cheap, fast and easy to use. Very happy with it; would be even better in a computer that has a direct interface.
It’s fast NVME PCIe 3.0 storage, easy to install and initialize on Windows 10. Prices are currently good (100-120 for 1TB) for this type of storage due to PCIe 4.0 NVME drives being the latest and greatest but you pay for the privilege and the average user may not notice the difference in day to day use. With this drive on a PCIe 3.0 bus read speeds can reach upto 3500MB/s and write speeds upto 3000MB/s depending on work load and file types being read/written.
Very good quality ssd, the speed is very close to the specifications and it was easy to install. I tested it with an enclosure on a before installing it permanently as an upgrade for a MacBook pro retina early 2015 (A1502). It was very easy to format to apple’s format and I required an adaptor to plug it to the motherboard.
Most people recommend the samsung ssd for apple but I used this one as it was a bit cheaper but similar specs. I couldn’t be more satisfied and hopefully this review will help anyone trying to figure out how to upgrade their MacBook.
I got this to change the m.2 on my laptop, was super easy to change and attach and started working straight away. Installed windows on it and imediatly saw the difference in speeds on the system.
But unfortunally i had to return it. The problem was the place where the m.2 sits is right in the spot where my hand rests and because this m.2 ran a idle temps of around 50 degress after a while it was uncomfortable so i had to return it.
But that was the only reason. If you buy this to use on a case or if the location of the m.2 slot on yout laptop is different you will have no problem as this is an amazing product.
This is one of the best M.2 PCIe 3×4 NVME SSD’s out there. Comparable to the more expensive Samsung SSD’s but a lot cheaper. At 54 for the 500GB version (when I bought it) you can’t go wrong! Western Digital were selling the same model on their website for 77.99, so a great price on Amazon at the moment.
Bought this to use as secondary storage for games as I only had a 500GB SSD with OS and handful of games. Very easy to install and set up in Windows by formatting the drive.
I should say that this won’t improve your FPS in games, this will greatly reduce load times which is worth the purchase.
Decent read and write speed, slight discount when purchasing but overall I have no complaint with this SSD. If I have more budget I would suggest go for 1TB drive.
This is a good SSD with excellent speeds, and it’s proved to be reliable for me so far. The software seems to work well (despite the ads, though they don’t get in the way too much). Only buy this when it’s discounted, below 70. Otherwise you may as well go for a Samsung.
he only hard part of installing is the tiny screw. and setting up is a little tricky if you have little knowledge with nvme’s. alot of fiddling with the bios. but other than that its super fast, super easy, and it doesnt take up sata plugs so it sits nicely on the motherboard. great product.
The drive is very easy to install and as expected once I installed Windows my boot up time went from 10sec to 6.1sec and the file transfer between drivers and boot up time of games and software are significantly faster then with my old normal ssd.
I got this SSD to replace my old disk hard drive and the speed boost to the computer was amazing! I have been using it for 6 months now and it still performs as good as when I bought it. The only downside is that the SSD didn’t come with the screws needed to hold it in place on the motherboard so I had to buy them from elsewhere.
If you are setting up or building a new computer then this NVME should definitely be places in one of the M.2 slots. It is fast, reliable, doesn’t overheat, and functions flawlessly. It’s been months since I got it and it still provides a top notch performance.
This is one of the major factors that contribute to a smooth gaming experience. With high reading and writing speeds that are far cry higher than a conventional ssd, this M.2 is a must.
It is very affordable compared to other brands and WD is a brand to trust based on experience.

Not a bad price at time for 1TB SSD. Got a Nvme to pci adapter board and managed to get it to work perfectly fine on a 8 year old motherboard. To boot from it, did have to flash my ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard with a custom bios I created that’s available somewhere on the Internet with the latest nvme driver injected. Now getting those sweet 3.5Gbps read speeds. Only issue is that I’ve not actually noticed any change in performance in Windows or Games compared to a regular SSD, but hopefully I’m futureproofed for when Nvidia make use of the RTX IO technology.

Wish I’d joined the SSD party sooner. Massive difference to loading times on World of Warcraft which is my main game. Really simple (if a little fiddly) to install but didn’t take more than a couple of minutes. Motherboard for those interested in compatibility is a Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming Z370. Very pleased with my purchase.

Fast, well built and amazing performance even after hitting the cache limits. This is the major reason to get this over a cheaper nvme drive. This will sustain fast writes for far far longer than the cheaper drives that have a tiny cache.
The next step up are the Samsung evo and pro lines which take the after cache performance up another level.
This drive was easy to install and setup Windows on. Has been 100% reliable in the few months that I have been using it as have all WD drives that I have used in the past. If you look at the SSD comparison chart websites they show this drive not too far from the top on speed for M.2 drives but well below the top on price. It is not the cheapest 500Gb drive but in its speed category it is the cheapest. That makes it the best value 500Gb M.2 SSD I believe. 500Gb is enough for Windows and all the everyday software like Office and my CAD program which load super fast on this drive. Boot up from cold is also about 11 seconds with this drive. It was 25 with my old HDD. I got the one with the integrated heatsink because it was only a few pounds more but I think unless you game off of it or spend a lot of time editing big video files then the heatsink is not needed.
My first experience with nvme drives and I bought 2 of them, it took me ages to realise that the screws to hold them in place come with the motherboard and NOT with the drives themselves which was a major inconvenience.
The drive is incredibly fast, Windows in about 5 seconds. I wanted this because of the added heatsink. Very impressed, but there is no information supplied at all.

Great little piece of kit. Upgraded from a Samsung 250gb SSD on my main system drive. On an Asus 270f motherboard. Used the lower slot. Acronis did the business on cloning to the larger drive with 0 hassle. The speed improvement is superb. Cheapest speed upgrade I’ve done on a computer with the highest result per pound spent in many many years.
Lightning speed boosting the power of my HP Z640 Dual Xeon workstation, which now boots from cold in 20 seconds! Seems to have improved photo and video editing processing speeds as well.
Exactly what the description says. One of the fastest options. Really easy to install, however it may be more difficult depending on your system (ie: if you have a difficult to open laptop).
Totally recommended.
(Make sure your pc/laptop can work at that speed, otherwise you will be wasting money, if your device is old).

i installed this and a samsung evo 960 NVME into the mini itx build i made for my brother and man o man did this mean NO CABLES were needed,if i had to add a normal SSD or HDD there would have just been a mess of cables to deal with
is this a fast drive with imperious read and write sppeds…you bet it is testing the speeds between transfers from this drive to the samsung it impressed me that i could fling a blue ray film from one to the other instantly litteraly in the blink of an eye,(or a mouse click),and vice versa,not only did it manage to transfer a single 3+gb title so quickly but i then tried it with multiple films consisting of about 15-20gb…have never seen storage swap between drives so quickly the green bar just zipped by in seconds
a word of advice though if you are transferring from a USB thumb drive the transfer will only go as fast as the thunb drive will allow…so an old USB 2 drive will still only transfer slowly….my point if you want faster thunb drive transfer speed…update your thumb drives as well
My oh my… the difference moving from a mid-tier SSD to this made was unbelievable… I’ve not enabled fast boot or anything else and usually boot into windows in less than 5 seconds on a bad day – moving large files around this drive is lightning fast and after testing I was getting slightly more than the advertised write/read speeds
It is a great SSD in terms of memory storage and price, but unfortunately from all of the testings, I got nowhere near 3000mb/s. The average being between 1000 to 1300 MB/s writing and 1100 to 1400 MB/s reading on MacBook Pro 13″ Mid 2015 (16GB RAM). On many occasions, the fans were kicking in very often even when I was just browsing the web without having more than 3 or 4 tabs open.
When it comes to gaming, I don’t think there is much to talk about as it made just a slight difference to the performance at games from the Appstore which optimized for Mac, ex. World of Tanks Blitz on mid settings.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one who experienced this but if there are more people encountering the same issues, maybe BUYER, try to look for SAMSUNG SSD’s based on users’ feedback, it is more reliable.
Great little NVMe drive, perfect for gaming, applications and for project storage. I moved my entire game library across to it and boot-times have never been faster! Would highly recommend and I even recorded speed benchmarks higher than the advertised rates.
Bit slower to boot from that my 250gb ssd but we’re talking about 8 seconds but overall outstanding!! if you have the slot on your motherboard it’s one of the easiest things to fit I’ve ever seen. just a flat out get one from me, been tempted to sell this one and buy a bigger and scrap my 4tb hdd.

Benchmarking this device suggests the rated speeds are accurate and this is a properly fast drive. I wasn’t sure if the heatsink was really needed but it was only a few quid more when I purchased the device, I’m glad I did. Under benchmarking this thing can get upto 80C! I think cooling is really a must!
Ordered this, and it arrived early. Well packaged, and protected. Fitting was easy, although with my motherboard ASRock PRO the screw to hold in place was difficult to get at. Bluetack on the end of a screwdriver worked a trea
The drive is very easy to install and is very fast, I only have a PCI 3 4x motherboard, but still managed to get nearly 3500 MB/s read speeds and 2600 MB/s in Crystal Disc Mark in normal mode. See screenshot.
My old SSD can only ever achieve around 550 MB/s at best.
Very happy – no issues what so ever, would recommend.
One minor thing there is no securing screw included, so had to dig out motherboard box and find one, but not really an issue.
The width was surprising and I was unable to install on my mobo slots but a while later I had the back plate off whilst the large heatsink still on top fitted nicely. Not installed any games on it yet but I cloned my old c drive with macrium reflect and the os feels a bit faster. The heatsinks feel quite warm to the touch so I’m guessing they take a bit of heat away. Good price
Installed as a secondary ssd in my Alienware m15. Interestingly, although it stated that the 2nd ssd will run as a NVMe Pcie 2x, It still gives reading/writing speeds above 3400 mb. DOES NOT COME WITH SCREW TO FIX IT!

The dashboard was pretty useless so you can just overwrite it with a simple format.
Gets a little warm under load though it remains stable despite this.
Very fast SSD. I bought this WD model it as I wasn’t happy with the performance of another brand of m.2 gen 3 SSD I bought from Amazon. As advertised it will give a maximum read and write of 3000mb/s+. On average you’re looking at around 2000mb/s read and 1700mb/s write. I have no idea how I lived without this beforehand; loading anything is nearly instant and games actually perform better in my opinion. If you’re thinking of buying one to replace a HDD or even slower SSD, just do it, it’s worth every penny.
My only complaint is it has only 931gb free. Which is disappointingly lower than 1000gb.

I got this at a much cheaper price of 124.99 to tidy up my PC build from a 128gb sata SSD and 2 500GB HDD’s and it’s great. Day to day i don’t notice the difference between this and my old SSD (sata not M.2) but that only had windows installed on it.
This is big enough for windows and all my games that i’m currently playing and i’m always the first one to boot into a level online. Transfer of files within the SSD are immediate and i’ll be looking to purchase another for additional storage later down the line
I upgraded from a 240gb sata ssd to this 1tb speed machine and I am very impressed with it. Everything is so fast and snappy, the installation was fairly easy once I realised my motherboard had to have an option enabled in the bios for nvme drives. The heat sink on this is very nice looking also.
I ordered this drive because I was totally fed up with waiting for EVERYTHING to load, even with a new fast AM4 Ryzen mobo and suitable peripherals. Although I had watched numerous YouTube clips about how fast these M.2 NVMe drives performed, I remained sceptical – until I (very easily) fitted it and powered up. Wow. It’s blazingly fast!
I’ve used this SSDs my boot drive, and to hold games where loading times were particularly critical. The sustained and random read/write speeds are exceptional even though it’s using PCIe Gen 3. I’d happily recommend this SSD at this price point.
This memory is just great. Very fast and easy to use. Loaded Windows 10 from start to finish in lest that 8 minutes and that with my slow typing. Boot up into Windows lightingly fast also. If your into gaming this is a must have for your storage.
Picked this up when it was only 30 more than the SATA version. Easy to install and the heatsink looks amazing in a black build. However…
The performance you gain on a gaming loading screen with NVMe compared to an SATA is <1s. Save your money and get a larger SATA drive.
M.2 socket is great for making a tidy build. You can get SATA SSD with M.2 connections.
So Much Faster than my WD Veloci Raptor 1000 RPM drives. Did not think there would be much Difference. Still needs to be scanned and optimised and Maintenance done on your system to get the best out of the Drive. But this is good. Board BIOS then Boot up from windows is in your face once you enter your password. You want fast, This is it.
Excellent stuff, can’t fault it. Does exactly what I need it to. I haven’t tried gaming mode with it yet, so have no idea how the temperatures and performance will be in that mode, as I bought the model without the heat sink. Temperatures stay fine in normal operating conditions. This is my boot drive and replaced my old m.2 ssd, as I had simply run out of space on it.
The packaging and build quality have all well exceeded my expectations, it’s very fast and snappy, noticeably much better than my 240gb Kingston SATA SA400.
HOWEVER, the actual storage capacity is 465GBs. You should always expect usable disk space to be a little less, but a 35GB difference in usable storage?? For that, I have to knock a star off value for money. Unless I’m missing something of course.
EDIT: I was wrong, it’s incredibly fast!
This is a great drive, with a very long lifespan and excellent speeds. I was initially choosing between this Black and the WD Blue SATA, but the difference in speed and in particular the difference in write cycles makes this a clearly better drive. The Samsung EVO is virtually identical in spec but more expensive, and so not worth the additional cost if you ask me.
I had a lot of issues transferring data from my old SATA drive to this — be careful which adapters you use, because BIOS won’t boot to half of them — but that’s not the fault of the drive. Windows suppliers just need to move on from BIOS…
I replaced my Samsung 500Gb NVME drive with this, as I needed more space for games and my dad needed a new SSD as his failed after 10 years of use.
Windows and games are loading slightly faster than the old Samsung drive but when I need to copy something from a normal SSD to this drive, it is stupidly quick.

Bought this for a new computer I was building.
I knew it was something special when it took less than 20 minutes, from me inserting the windows disk, to completely install Windows.
Gaming is a breeze thanks to a 3gbs read/write speed; likewise for large photoshop files.
It is a very fast device but does not really help if you are a gamer. In my opinion it does not make gaming massively better. It’s not like night and day
This was a massive upgrade for me as I only had a 110GB SATA SSD and a 1TB HDD, not ideal for games. This has expanded my storage hugely and gives me much more room to install games, especially with games getting bigger and bigger. Relatively easy to install if you know what you’re doing.
I’ve just replaced a samsung EVO plus 970 for this WD Black 500GB. Couldn’t be happier! The WD delivers better read and write speeds and produces a much smoother performance overall. The only thing missing from it is the heatsink. However, since I had a gaming performance heatsink I preferred to buy the model without a WD heatsink and added my own. Brilliant result!
I’m using the disk in my main PC right now. It required no setup to get it working and it’s nice and fast. A very simple way to give your PC a speed boost.
If you’re simply looking for an M.2 drive with top-notch performance, this is certainly one that should be on your shortlist. The heatsink-equipped version costs a fair bit more, but could be worth it if you value aesthetics and better cooling.
Great product. I had to clone my old hard drive which I did using an USB enclosure and mini partition wizard. Overall the install went well. I would advise using ESD protection when handling the device.
Using this my PC boots up before my monitor even turns on and since it mounts straight to the motherboard its not taking up any sata ports for larger storage options and doesn’t take up any space.
Very very good SSD. Installation is as easy as any M.2 drive, which is to say it can be quite fiddly. I’ve got a couple of these and they are as fast as they should be.
When installed I didn’t see much of a difference between before and after. Loading times were slightly faster but not incredible. Though could be my comp was already pretty decent. Also, probably just me but I did struggle with the install abit but must admit I’m not the most tech skilled person.
Transformed my PC, even from a regular SATA SSD.
I move any games that I’m currently playing across to this drive now, load times are almost non existent.

I installed some of my steam library on this – I didn’t notice and FPS increase but I wasn’t expecting to as this replaced a dying SSD. You may if you come for a mechanical HDD.
It does get warm under load but that’s to be expected.

The device itself comes in a cardboard outer and simple plastic inner, fitting is simple, the biggest obstacle is when folks don’t realise this is an NVMe SSD and you need to fit it to an NVMe SSD rather than just any old M.2 Sata header, so don’t get it wrong folks, get it inan NVMe M.2 slot and you will have the best experience ever.
So, performance with games like PUBG, Fortnight and World of Warships is excellent, streaming to the same drive as you record game play also flies. Building with Visual Studio has also improved (with my project previously taking 9 minutes now taking just under 6 minutes, just for being rebased from an older SATA SSD to this unit).
The performance difference from an SSD SATA is there you can feel it, but you can positively taste it when you run this alongside the a mechanical drive, blazing fast performance.
Does what it says, very fast. Cut boot time by a factor of 10. Installations & using apps also very much faster than before. Good value as cheaper than equivalent offerings. Fitted to a lenovo v130 with no issues. You don’t get the screw needed to secure it to the motherboard though so be sure to have one on hand.
Super fast. Make sure you have the tiny screws in your motherboard, and I do n’t mean the riser!
So in my MSI X470 GAMING PRO motherboard, the only things that wwere installed were the two risers, that look like screws, they look like all you would need, but take one out and look closely at it, it might have a little thread i nthe centre with no screw!
MAKE SURE you know this before you purchase as these do not come with any screws. Unit and paperwork ONLY.
I can suggest you search for m.2 screw or something on ebay or something. WHY DON’T THEY GIVE YOU THE SCREWS WITH THE DAMN BOARD.
Anyway, the performance is great, so 5 stars, ease to install is 4… well let me change that to 2. Because why. Give people the effing screws for the damn item. I blame MSI for this and other MOBO manufactuteres that don’t unclude them and I blame Western Digital as well.
Great item sitting by itself if you cut all of the installation part out. 5/5 for the item itself.

As someone that in his last builds had been using a old style HDD, and was looking at a “normal” SSD this was really worth the investment, W10 boot in less then 12 seconds.
Perfect SSD storage. My motherboard recognised it straight away, so there was almost no set-up required. I initially installed it as a slave drive for applications, but I was that impressed that I bit the bullet and transferred the entire system to it.
Performance is where this product shines, and to say it’s blazing fast is an understatement. Load times have dramatically improved on almost every application loading, and in some instances games have improved in overall performance, including better draw distances.
For the price I believe it is an absolute steal – and you get a very good guarantee from Western Digital, too.
I had never used any NVMe memory before this review, so I was pleased to get the chance with a free 500gb WD Black SN750 High-Performance NVMe Internal Gaming SSD from Amazon Vine. The memory was a compact board that simply slotted into a free NVMe holder on the motherboard. The memory was quickly detected, and up and running in only a few minutes. I have never installed a drive that fast before. Like some other people report, the NVMe didn’t have a screw, but my motherboard had spare fitted ready to be used when memory was to be fitted. Check you board before you buy any screws.
NVMe memory seems to be a halfway house between normal PC memory, and SSD drives, with the ability to act like any other type of drive for booting etc. I hadn’t intended to try this card as a boot drive, but I was so impressed by the fast way it loaded and saved files as a storage drive I just had to try it. It allowed my PC to boot very crisply.
My system is used for building and designing Graphics and Animations, and I tend to have a lot of drivers etc loading at boot. Boot time used to take minutes, now using this NVMe it took initially 57 seconds, but I managed to get that down to 35 seconds, I am sure with more care I could get it faster. I have seen reports of under 10 seconds for booting, that might even be possible on my system if I put it into gaming mode and used the BIOS fast boot!
The fast SSD’s and older hard drives now feel like they run in slow motion compared to the SN750 drive. I am now moving over my working areas from these ‘old fashioned drives’ to the SN750, and when that fills it won’t be long before I get more NVMe’s and move my SSD’s etc into an archiving role in a NAS! There is a distinctly slow feel to what used to be my fast SSD drives, forget the hard disks they now feel tired. NVMe now rules!
SATA is a legacy standard that wasn’t designed with solid-state storage in mind. On the other hand, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express drives) offer about 5x the bandwidth and can approach transfers speeds of 3GB/s!
Once installed on a Windows 10 device, the NVMe has been detected it and installs the drivers. Therefore, should be an overall easy install.
Which means that this unit is an excellent add-on for the purposes of Gaming. This WD is a pretty good piece of kit.
I thought I’d give Western Digital a go since it was cheaper than the Samsung. It’s definitely fast but the RYZEN 5G system did not seem as fast as other RYZEN systems I had built. Too many things were different to be sure and I never ran any actual benchmarks. I expect this drive is just as good. Just an emotional attachment to the Samsungs feeling they must be the best.
What ever you do make sure you fit an NVME drive in your next system build if you can. The prices are now very similar to SATA SSD. The prices of the 500GB ssd are so reasonable there is no need to get a hdd unless you need 2TB or more of storage. You can build systems with both but it’s almost not worth the bother if 500GB is enough.
I had already bought and fitted the blue version of one of these back in March 2017 when I first got this Acer PC and thus I had no fears that it would not fit and of course the old one would be a backup of the old installation.
I used the windows 10 media creation tool to create a USB stick to perform the fresh installation of Windows 10 64 Bit.
The SSD slot in my PC is under the slot load DVD and hard drive and one also has to remove the front bezel to get them all out.
This Black SSD like my old one comes with no mounting hardware so check you have the small screw to hold it in the slot.
It all worked fine and the first thing I went to install was the “Western Digital SSD Dashboard”

That fails looking for two different dll’s which it assumes are installed on your PC (you will note the download is only 174Kb) and even after installing a couple of other applications it still fails to find one.
It seems to work fine as did the old one but this one should of course be faster.
Just rather disappointed about the quality of their software.
I’ve just installed this and started transferring my games to it. Personally as I was already using a SATA SSD drive, I didn’t notice too much of a performance increase immediately. I think speeds will be limited by the devices you’re transferring to and from, given the bottlenecks are often the slowest device. But loading times and write speeds importantly feel exactly the same as my initial SSD.
Installation was super easy. As my motherboard didn’t support this card given it was made in 2014, I had to buy a PCI Express adapter. This is around 10 on Amazon and comes with a cute mini screwdriver and screw to secure the card to the board. Then simply plug into a spare PCI Express 3.0 slot and start your PC.
The drive was immediately detected so simply required formatting within the ‘Disk Manager’ tool, then it was ready to use. Formatted capacity was 465 GB.
One thing I love about the card is how good it looks. Sadly it won’t be seen in most cases, but it’s incredible to think hard drives now are this form factor and I’m looking forward to prices dropping to take advantage of ever higher capacities in the future.
WD came late to the SSD market and after a slow start this is the 3rd version of the Black NVME drive they’ve released. I already have the 2nd 2018 model.
Comparing the 2 you’ll notice no difference except a few MB/s here and there.
Installation was no different to any other M.2 SSD drive.
These drives are faster than the SATA based SSD but whether you’ll notice the difference is debatable unless you move huge files around on a regular basis.
As a windows boot drive the difference is a second or two. General windows tasks aren’t quicker to load.
It shines for editing 4k video though – HUGE files.
Still the price is good, a 5 year warranty is included and for video editing the drive working very well and should be on your shortlist.
Gamers buy one, it’s seriously fast
Make sure you download the WD dashboard from WD and use the dashboard to set the SSD into Gamer mode 😉 then it never sleeps it’s always ready to go.
Ran out of space on my MSI GP73 8RE laptop, so opted to get one of these as a dedicated game storage drive, transferred my entire steam and oculus libraries onto the drive, has made an astonishing diffrence in loading times.
Love it. Used in my dell XPS 13.
Please note. On the XPS the pcie lanes are in low power mode. You will not get the advertised speeds unless you have the right amount of lanes available running in full power. My PC can hit the advertised speeds. So happy with this drive that I am going to buy a 500gb for my PC. Going to get away from SATA for my OS drive plus most used software.
I bought this NVMe to add to my gaming system which was using a 128GB SSD from years ago. There is a massive change to the speed. Windows 10 now boots up in literally 4 seconds, if that. The post screen is up for longer than the boot process!
Windows 10 detects it and installs the drivers when installing too, which is excellent.
Gaming; well, I am the 1st to load into a game area and wait for the others. Everything is so much faster! I was going to purchase one of the competitor NVMe’s but went for the WD one as a “punt”. Glad I did. I bought the 2019 version.
Speed! Oh my god… I’m speechless. Going from a 7200rpm HDD to this SSD has been a real eye opener. I have never experienced loading times like I have with this. Have always used western digital for my HDDs over the years, and this is by far the most impressive upgrade I have done to my workstation, by a mile!
This little device flys through, I got it for gaming only and my loading time is practically none compared to my previous SATA SSD. You can download the WD app to update firmware and keep an eye on your SSD health. Very pleased with the price too, I got it when it was on offer, almost 20 quid cheaper than samsung one.
