Wanted to replace an old monitor that finally died after about 15 years use.
Simple, low desk-stand, and had the connectors I wanted (including built-in speakers)
This monitor is amazing for the price due to the refresh rate and built in speakers (not the best but good enough for youtube). The one issue is the brightness; it’s far too bright at the minimum brightness. It’s good for using in a bright room though.
So far so good got the monitor today and games play crispy and smooth as they should really happy I can enjoy 165hz display with cheap price package keep a bit damaged but it was perfect fine it even came with hdmi and display port what a deal
Bought this to finally drag myself out of the world of 1080p, and very glad i did. Build quality: Excellent. Stand: Height and swivel adjustable; excellent. Picture quality: 1440p at 144Hz; Excellent. I can find nothing to fault about this monitor!
Bought this a week ago to replace my old iiyama that had finally bitten the dust after 8 years. Build quality of the screen is great with plenty of adjustment. Image quality is amazing. Playing some of my Steam content now at 2560×1440 is like visiting them for the first time compared to the previous 1080 screen resolution and the refresh rate makes for such smooth game play. I bought it at discounted price so excellent value for money but even at full price it would have been worth it.
Excellent value and amazing picture quality. Blacks look dark and dont have annoying discolouration and overall colour correctness is outstanding at its price point.
It is so good infact, that when i upgraded to a budget 1440p display, the drop in picture quality made me jump back to this one and return the 1440p display.
This is the first monitor I have ever bought and it is one of the best for the price it is. The picture is great and you can change the settings for the picture on the monitor if it needs adjusting to your eyes. One of the best monitors in the market. Would suggest to others!
This device is extremely easy on the eye even when working all day in the home office. It is possible to either read full width spreadsheets or put documents side by side for comparison without issues. Reading email is much better than previously but like my other wide-screen monitor does cause Teams to lockup completely when sharing content from a corporate dell laptop. I suspect this has far more to do with Microsoft’s resource management and the laptops graphics output capability than the screen however.
It’s bright, it’s clear, it’s sharp, but the viewing angles are tight. If it’s not your main monitor or directly in front of you, expect some low contrast sides with the viewing angle being what it is.
Other than that, it’s great in it’s range.
Nice picture for gaming. FHD is sufficient for my casual FPS gaming. Ofc QHD be better but twice the price.
This monitor for ~130 pricetag is worth the price, a bargain compared to other models same 165/1ms specs, makes for a great console monitor. (it quotes sub 1ms rate but I didn’t test)
IPS is very nice on YouTube HD test, viewing angles on a matte 24inch not the best in a bright room but same as any other 24″ IPS and way better than a VA.
And super responsive no input lag feel at all 1ms feels great imo on FPS games even at 60Hrz ps4.
There is no height adjustment just tilt, might be important to know for some gamers that sit close for FPS games and will need something to boost height from desk to eye level.
i got it on a discount, its a great monitor if your into fps gaming. However the resolution for what you get isnt the best. i understand it isnt 4k but the image quality just isnt there. However it is still a great option, maybe not the best if your into simulators and story line games.
I chose this IIyama as I already had one and its great, but also some of the other VA gaming panels in this price range people complained of ghosting and even poor text quality for everyday use. It has a separate power pack and the stand looks nice but I used a monitor arm so can’t comment on that. I connected it up via displayport, to my GTX 1080. It comes with HDMI and DP cables, and I used the DP cable.
What’s it like?
Bright! Really really bright! It comes out of the box with an eyeball burning setting that I had to change. It has a few built in profiles for gaming, text etc but you have 3 custom user ones, I immediately made one that matched my 32″ IPS by putting the eco mode on max. Side by side its actually a clearer, better picture than my Viewsonic IPS for browsing etc. The curve is so subtle that you hardly notice it for work, its perfect really.
I tried the HDR, you must also enable the HDR in Windows (or on your device) AND the monitor or it looks terrible and washed out. The difference is subtle and I was a bit underwhelmed and decided not to use it. Might be worth it for watching films etc maybe.
I also used the 144Hz on my everyday desktop and you can really see the difference in smoothness with a regular 60hz side by side. There’s loads of settings and I personally liked the single joystick on the back vs a dozen different buttons. It also has a USB 3 hub built in and the speakers are passable for casual use.
Gaming?
I didn’t notice any ghosting playing a mixture of FPS, RPG and strategy builders. I had to enable GSync in the NVidia panel and I also used Windows Game bar to check my FPS, I manage to achieve 2K 144Hz on my setup. The curve and just the excellent picture do involve you a bit more in an FPS style game but it makes any game look great.
Honestly this a great everyday and gaming monitor with a vibrant involving picture BUT…
The flickering issue!
If you have the “Direct Drive” turned on which you will likely want for gaming performance it displays an occasional flickering (looks like interlacing) noticeable on areas of plain colour particularly greys. You can still use freesync/gsync and all the other features with DD off. It doesn’t happen all the time, just certain areas of images or content. Turns out Iiyama had this problem on these panels, different models and sizes, for over 2 years, also its not just them but other manufacturers using the same panels. So its a VA panel issue although I’ve read the LG panels do not have this issue.
Quality/Price/Dead Pixels?
However, maybe other panels don’t have the flickering but have the ghosting instead? It seems part of the prices/performance compromise? It literally says in the manual that using Drive Drive increases performance at the expense of quality but its still pretty disappointing. Also mine arrived with what looked like a row of dead pixels in the bottom corner, I arranged a replacement but the next day it had gone and so far its not come back, so I kept it.
I will keep mine unless the issue gets worse or the dead pixels come back, but its worth this keeping mind before your purchase.
The 32″ screen is beautiful, I haven’t needed to mess about with trying to manually set the contrast or brightness, it runs my games beautifully with its 144hz refresh rate! I now have my PC, Xbox Series S and Switch plugged into it thanks to the HDMI ports and Display Ports, they switch over easily when you turn one off and turn another on. I haven’t noticed any shadowing of screen tears. It’s just an absolute pleasure to play on!
Only trouble is, I sit very close to my desk – literally my desk touches my torso, so I’m close to the monitor and with a display this wide you end up either moving your head or your eyes and looking at the screen side-on – not really a problem with this IPS screen but it just feels weird and distorted.
Personally if I can find a decent/ budget 4k IPS with adequate refresh rate I’ll be moving to that. For now I’m sticking with a high refresh rate 1440p screen or two.
Likes : Refresh rate and response times. 1800r curve is just right for viewing from around 1 metre.
Dislikes : Menu controls are clumsy. The panel itself seems washed-out, even in high contrast modes. The panel itself feels very fragile; I had to wipe off a small speck and the cells did not recover until I massaged them back to life.
I admit, my negative comments about the VA panel are likely biased from my years of experience with high quality IPS panels, but regardless of display technology, the actual surface and rigidity of this screen feels soooo fragile in comparison. I suspect it would not hold up to any physical impact at all.
Subnote : I had to return the first unit I received due to there being 8(!) stuck pixels. The worst one being almost exactly centred on the screen. The replacement unit is (so far) completely free of them.
Mine developed a fault 4 days after getting it. First a blue line appeared. I tried different cable display port and two hdmi cables (two of the cable came from the monitor) I then uninstalled and reinstalled display drivers and then a another pc which was freshly had windows 10 19044.1348 21h2 on. No nvidia driver then installed latest ones too. Alas the blue line still there and last night another lined appeared which was green but its hard to see, the screenshot doesn’t show it. I contacted Amazon and then gave me a web site to contact iiyama unfortunately they dont deal with the public. The monitor is out of stock as the moment and also gone up a lot in price. I just want a replacement. The major thing with this monitor I dont like is the controls the buttons are behind the facia and really awkward to navigate. My Dell 24″ultra sharp have similar thing but was far easy to use.
I didn’t want an ultra wide screen monitor, so, I decided on this as being the next best thing, and I love it!!! It’s brilliantly designed and ergonomically created with a nice curved screen for your eyesight, and I have had no problems with setting things up, although it is a little bit heavy and care must be taken when lifting and moving it around. I obtained the 33 page manual off their website which was easy to read and even just using the factory settings it’s highly acceptable as a ”straight out of the box” monitor. Response times are fab, watched the footie and American Football at the weekend the colouration is just absolutely fantastic. At less than 300 I am delighted with the screen so far, I highly doubt you can get something else equivalent at this price, especially, with the basic specs of 1ms response time, a refresh rate of 144Hz and standard viewing resolution at 2560×1440, it’s addictive, I wish I’d bought one year’s ago, thank you iiyama.
During the day it’s all work and this monitor is excellent! Zero defects. Excellent brightness and contrast levels and pretty accurate colour reproduction.
In the evenings this monitor supports a little gaming. For me image quality is more important than frame rate and again this monitor stands up well. The screen brightness is closer to 500nits than it is the advertised 400nits but don’t get excited. It’s great to expose those darker areas of an image but the HDR support isn’t anything special. We have no local array dimming here! Overdrive works well without introducing ghosting and I see very little black ‘smearing’.
Worth noting that I have this monitor connected to a laptop via USB-C (DP 1.4) sporting an RTX 3070. G-Sync is supported (via Freesync) but it was only when enabling HDR and Freesync via the screens OSD that I ended up with the image quality I’m so happy with!
Playing around with brightness, colour and contrast prior to enabling these features left me ready to pack it back in its box but once HDR and Freesync were enabled key image settings became fixed values (not manageable via the OSD) and picture quality becomes exceptional! Not seen this approach on any other monitor but it works!!
Also worthy of mention is the integrated USB hub. 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0. Mouse, keyboard, Corsair headset stand and webcam all connected and powered. Just one issue: the 2x USB 2.0 ports on the bottom of the monitor are back to back and anything but standard USB connectors will not fit when trying to use both ports. The USB 3.0 ports are side by side on the side so no such issues!
100% recommend this monitor for work and gaming. I’m left feeling like I have a monitor punching well above its weight.
I am very happy with this monitor, both for work and play ! For work it allows 3 documents at full size to be side by side. I had been considering a dual monitor set up but this is more convenient and fits my desk space better.
I enjoy some ‘shooter’ style games, mainly Fortnite, and the wide view with high resolution is very immersive. I’ve got a GTX1060 graphics card and was worried it wouldn’t handle the monitor, but with some settings turned down I get a frame rate of around 100 fps and the overall experience is far better than my old 1080p standard widescreen monitor at 60Hz. The graphics card could drive that at over 144 fps, but with a 60Hz monitor there seemed little point. Hopefully I’ll upgrade my graphics card at some point in future, when the ridiculous worldwide graphics card situation is resolved, but until then I am very happy with this monitor and my GTX1060.
Firstly, for anyone wondering you won’t be able to run at 1080p ultrawide. Not a big deal if your PC runs 1440p easily, but worth noting if you want to game at 1080p. There is still actually a 16:9 1080p mode, but no 21:9 at 1080p.
Secondly, the firmware is a mess and there are many of this model on the market (including mine) that don’t power on when you start the PC when they should, or start up with Windows 10 showing only half a screen and nasty artefacts over the other half. The temporary solution to this is to turn the monitor off and on again, or to power cycle it on and off from the plug.
The permanent solution to this is to send the monitor back to the manufacturers, though apparently this still happens after the firmware update from time to time.
Finally, the controls on the monitor are pretty terrible. I’ve had worse, but these aren’t up to scratch with high end monitors today.
All in all, I love the monitor, I just wish I didn’t have to reset it each day to get it working as it should.
+ The monitor’s specs described were delivered as expected along with a massive improvement to fps games. Excellent performance and highly suitable for competitive gaming
– After assembling, I noticed a single stuck (not dead) pixel which disappeared after gently wiping the screen with a tissue. This is not necessarily a negative and may just be a result of shipping as this can happen with pretty much any monitor regardless of brand. Haven’t noticed any other pixel issues since.
– One big gripe which is preventing me from giving this 5*: The power plug behind the monitor is way too loose and too easy to pull out with minimal force, which means adjusting the monitor or cable could disconnect the power completely. A little annoying after assembling but once you find the right height/tilt you usually dont need to move it anyway
This monitor isn’t curved but I personally prefer that so if you do see this monitor on sale I would highly highly recommend you buy it. It’s great for everything browsing the Internet, editing videos editing music and especially gaming. The only problem with that you might come across with this monitor is that some games don’t support it’s settings as default. This might make your screen a bit blurry at the edges so make sure you fiddle around with the settings before you do game with it there is a lot of settings pre-set on the Internet if you just look up the monitor and best settings for it on the internet.
So, this is a gold mine of a monitor, high resolution, high refresh rate, crisp no backlight bleed ips display, i only have 2 issues which are kinda just personal ones.
1. I dont know if its just my monitor or many others but the colour calibration is garbage out of the box, you can fix it manually to make the image pop but it will take about 20 mins to find your calibration standard.
2. This is apparently for every single example of the monitor, from you moving your mouse to the cursor moving on screen is acceptable for slow paced games or games that dont require quick reaction times, but i flat out dont recommend this monitor for something like csgo or high ranking call of duty matches as it feels a little slow, kinda like xbox/tv levels of slow, which isnt that bad but it might put you off if you play fast paced games.
Apart from that it exceeded my expectations for such a cheap ips 34inch 144hz monitor.
21:9 – Feels like you remove the box from your head, I want to re-play every favorite game in my collection and watch all the great movies once again, no more black bars, this monitor is meant for content creation, movie watching and playing games, basically its better than standard monitors in every aspect, even viewing googles maps is more immersive now.
Proper stand and packaging, took me few minutes to fix a stand to a monitor, no tools required. All needed cables were supplied.
What surprised me even more is audio. It has good speakers, there is some bass and it sounds well, I will definitely use it to play music.
For the money I paid I cannot believe its being sold for 329 pounds, 5-6 years ago an ultrawide 1080p 60hz with no audio cost the same amount of money and similar monitor with 100hz cost 1200+ pounds.
Regarding the issue people had with first revision of monitors – they are all gone, iiyama listened to feedback and updated all the monitors with new firmware, no issue at all, no dead or stuck pixels, just perfect.
My primary monitor is 144Hz, so I didn’t want to buy the same monitor again as I only need 30-60Hz for my secondary.
While shopping around, I found this monitor which has excellent reviews, in addition to many great features – all for a fairly low price.
Upon opening the box I was impressed with this monitor. The stand comes with a thumbscrew so you don’t need any tools to put it together and there’s even a cable management clip on the back of the stand.
The screen is what you’d expect for a TN panel, so not much to say there. The colours seem okay, but I still need to tweak the settings to get it looking similar to my primary monitor.
Out of the box the monitor runs at 60Hz, which is fine for me. To increase it to 75Hz you need to change it in Windows, but it won’t make a difference for me so I haven’t bothered. Freesync is another cool feature with this monitor, but again I don’t need it so I haven’t enabled it.
The speakers on this monitor aren’t amazing, but at this price you shouldn’t expect that. For online classes, podcasts and stuff like that they’re fine, but for music, gaming, films, etc. I’d put the headset on.
The connectivity of this monitor is great too. It has DP and HDMI so I can connect my PC and my PS4 to it without having to switch any cables around.
The monitor has auto-input, meaning it will automatically switch to any input source which is giving a signal, and auto-standby, so it will go to sleep when it’s not receiving any input.
For this price, this is a really solid monitor. I’ve been spoiled by high refresh rates though so I wouldn’t recommend this as a primary monitor – 75fps is just not enough for me. Get a 120Hz+ primary and this will make an excellent secondary monitor for things like Discord, YouTube, web browsing, etc.
UPDATE:
I’ve been using this monitor for about a week now and I stand by most of what I said in my original review.
One problem I noticed is that the stand provided with this monitor does tilt the screen noticeably, which isn’t great for a TN panel as they have pretty terrible viewing angles. I fixed this by buying a tilt-adjustable dual monitor stand, which I was looking into getting before I purchased this monitor anyway as I knew I would be tight on desk space, but this is definitely something worth considering.
Furthermore, this monitor doesn’t have as many options to play with in the monitor settings as I would have liked. I’ve managed to get the colours close to my primary monitor, but I can’t get them to match close enough that I can’t tell the difference when windows span across both monitors.
I must stress, however, that this monitor is very good for its price. Is it an amazing monitor all round? No, but if you’re buying this monitor with that expectation then you aren’t living in the real world. If you already have a high refresh rate gaming monitor, then this will make an excellent secondary monitor. However, I wouldn’t recommend this as a primary monitor due to it’s moderate refresh rate and lacking colour customisation.
I’ve come across concerns with regards to the monitor’s input latency as well as some quality control and firmware-related issues in earlier samples. I haven’t experienced any of these issues myself. In terms of its input latency, I can’t say I’ve noticed any sort of lag at all. I’m not a competitive gamer nor do I have any experience with any other gaming monitors, but I do play fast-paced action and FPS games at high frame rates and haven’t noticed any issues at all with input lag. The monitor seems to respond quite fast to my mouse and keyboard inputs (based on my subjective experience rather than any actual measurements). If there is any delay, I’m not experienced or trained enough to be able to notice it in any way.
1) Gaming performance
The monitor handles high frame rates very well. As mentioned above, it offers a fast response to your mouse and keyboard inputs. During fast motion sequences or rapid camera turns, the image does not get blurry. The refresh rate and pixel response time seem to handle those rapid transitions extremely well, giving you a very smooth experience if you’re able to hit high frame rates with consistent frametimes. At this resolution, you can expect an overclocked 6900 XT to push roughly 110-120 FPS at maxed out settings on a GPU-intensive game like borderlands 3, while you can hit over 130-140 FPS on less graphically-demanding modern titles while still maxing out all settings.
With Freesync turned off, my untrained eyes haven’t noticed any stuttering or tearing at all, not even once.
2) Image quality
Left at their stock/factory calibration settings, the colours look fine and the viewing experiencing is good for anything from gaming to productivity, but the monitor doesn’t offer anything exceptional or exciting in this regard. Viewing angles are exactly in line with what you’d expect from an IPS panel. The very first thing I did with the monitor was to check it for any dead pixels by cycling through several solid colours and I’m glad to report that my panel is entirely free of any defects, 6 months on.
3) Build quality
The very first thing I noticed is the premium feel of this product. It’s made almost entirely of plastic but, at first glance, the quality of the construction seems above average and comparable to what you’d see in much more expensive monitors. The adjustments (tilt, pivot, rotation and height) are very smooth and highly satisfying. There is one noticeable problem however. Despite its apparent build quality, the monitor is very wobbly at the neck and even a slight nudge to your tabletop will send the screen into a persistent wobble. I’m able to put up with that, but it’s an annoyance and definitely something to consider.
The product requires no tools at all to assemble. The neck comes already attached to the monitor. All you have to do is hook the neck into the stand and secure it by hand (instructions provided).
4) Backlight
The backlighting on my particular panel is fairly uniform and gets a thumbs up from me. The brightness can be turned up quite high and I’ve noticed no backlight bleed on my panel.
However, there is one important thing to point out and that is the visible IPS glow that I can observe on my panel, most pronounced in the dark and at a high brightness setting. This is not a problem for me and isn’t visible when I’m sitting at the desk at a normal viewing distance away from the screen, using the stock brightness setting. It’s not a big deal but something to bear in mind. This is not a defect with the monitor but an artefact of IPS technology.
Another thing to mention here is the poor black levels on this panel. Black looks very lit up on the panel at stock brightness. My panel doesn’t come anywhere near close to displaying true black, but again, this is a limitation of IPS technology and not a problem with the monitor itself. It doesn’t significantly affect my viewing experience. But if you require true, deep blacks for your work or gaming, know that this screen won’t provide that. This, I feel, is one of the monitor’s main limitations but not a deal-breaker and I’m still giving this monitor a full 5 stars.
5) Accessories
It comes with a UK power cable, an HDMI cable labelled as “premium high speed hdmi cable with ethernet”, a display port cable, and a cable for the USB hub.
The manual is fairly useless and can be discarded. It wastes its time illustrating how to plug devices into the monitor (iiyama have assumed their customers don’t know how to use cables to connect their devices to the monitor) rather than explaining the OSD features and settings, which would have been handy and removed the need to guess the meanings of many abbreviations and options.
6) Aesthetics
It doesn’t have the gimmicky “gaming” style you see implemented in other gaming monitors. It looks clean and professional with a very minimalistic, all-black design featuring the company logo and G-Master branding at the back.
The bezels on the sides and top measure just 2mm, contributing to the sleek appearance of the viewable screen.
7) On-screen display
The OSD can be navigated using a row of 4 buttons (no joystick). It took me just a few minutes to get completely comfortable with it and I can now navigate it with ease, so it gets a big thumbs up from me. The range of settings accessible via the OSD can be seen in the attached photos.
8) Sound
The monitor packs a loudspeaker(s) at the back. To my surprise, the maximum volume goes up very high on the monitor and is much louder than you’ll ever need. Setting it at 57/100 is too loud even for me. The sound quality is fairly good considering the source. I’d be very happy to use the built-in speaker for everything from music to podcasts but I don’t want to disturb the neighbours.
9) Range of movements
– 45 rotation about the vertical axis
– Limited pivot motion (not enough to orient the panel to portrait – see photo)
– Tilt (see photo)
– Height adjustment range of 13cm
10) A few measurements
– The viewable screen measures exactly 33.4cm by 80cm.
– The distance between the edge of the viewable screen and the bezel is 6mm (that’s to say, there’s a black border around the viewable screen measuring 6mm in thickness).
– Lastly, the bottom edge of the viewable screen sits 20.2cm above the surface of your desk with the monitor at maximum height. This isn’t quite enough for me so I will be placing this monitor on a short stand. It’s also mountable, if that is your thing.
All in all, this is a solid monitor that delivers high-end features at a mid-range price point. If I had to buy an ultrawide monitor again, I’d still choose this one, 6 months on (despite the screen wobbling around violently as I type the last of this review).
Initially I was puzzled by how poor this monitor seemed: I’ve had iiyama before and they’ve always excelled, but I spent an age trying to calibrate this one for day-to-day computing, with no good results. Fortunately, I stumbled on a review site which suggested turning the brightness right down, and hey presto things fell into place. Of the important settings I’ve found Brightness = 50, Contrast = 70, Overdrive = -2, Black Tuner = -1 and Colour Saturation = 10 to suit me. In the end the only fault I can find is a tendency to ghost when scrolling down web pages quickly, which might annoy gamers but which I think is acceptable at this price level.
Build quality is good and fortunately I paid for height adjustment, which to me is a must.
I’ve taken a star off because it really shouldn’t be coming with the brightness defaulted so high.
Purchased as a Like New Warehouse deal for 134 in September 2019 to replace a Samsung 23″ S23B550V LED Monitor which I had for ages.
Even though the iiyama is not recognized as G-SYNC compatible in the NVIDIA driver software, G-SYNC does work for me with my GTX 1060 3GB through displayport. That was a great surprise, as I suffered tearing especially in PUBG.
It’s hard to comment on picture quality as this is subjective. To me it all looks fine. The reds are red, the greens are green and the blues are blue. I read a review that mentioned that the blacks can look washed out, but that is not my experience with this monitor. It looks fine to me.
I’m a bit sensitive to issues like backlight bleeding and ghosting, but I suffer none. I bought a more expensive BenQ a few months back, but had to return it as it had loads of problems with bleeding and ghosting.
Input lag is a non issue.
I don’t know what more I could ask from a 27″ HD monitor I got for 134 in 2019. It’s pretty good for what it is.
TIL when setting it up:
1. In order to benefit from Freesync / G-SYNC you first have to enable Freesync in the monitor’s menu.
2. To benefit from the 75Hz screen refresh rate, you need to change that setting in the Windows 10 properties of the monitor (see image attached).
3. You need to enable G-SYNC in the NVIDIA Control Panel (see image attached). No guarantee that this work for everybody. It worked for me though. Once this is done, don’t forget to disable V-Sync in your games.
4. Apparently you have to use a displayport cable with the monitor to get G-SYNC to work.
Great product. The edges are a bit deceiving as there’s a second edge sort of within the screen, but it’s not a big border by any means. The picture quality is great. Windows loads brilliantly. I’m writing this review on the screen now. I don’t game excessively but everything seems to be registering as quickly and the resolution is great. Easy picture controls and a handy cable holder. The stand I got was not adjustable – you can only tilt it, not change the height and orientation like other reviews suggest. I had to use a piece of wood and three rubber tiles to get it to the right height. If you want to connect a laptop like I did and use this monitor as a second screen, headphones need to plug into the monitor, not the laptop. The iiyama logo is incredibly bright when you first turn it on, which is annoying when using at night. The instruction manual I got seemed to show parts I didn’t have, but everything I did have fitted together perfectly in a different way, leading me to believe that the manual I got was for a different model. Overall a good product, with just a couple of things.
The picture quality is as good as the LG – good colour balance and contrast.
No stuck pixels on my copy. I read in the reviews that some people had issues with stuck/dead pixels but mine has none.
There is a setting on the monitor called “direct drive” – use it! Avoid the “overdrive” feature because it causes some ghosting – at least on my setup (Nvidia RTX 2070). You can try it yourself: set overdrive to +2 and scroll some text up and down. The ghosting is not present when “Direct Drive” is selected instead, and that bypasses some of the monitor’s processing circuitry and leaves it up to the graphics card.
The refresh rate gives phenomenal results on games. Although the monitor is Freesync (AMD) compatible, it seems to be working fine on the (NVidia) RTX 2070. There is no tearing or stuttering, so I suspect that the NVidia card is using Freesync. I read somewhere that NVidia were quietly supporting Freesync on newer cards.
Please remember, though, that this is a GAMING monitor. The refresh rate is the major feature here. Image quality is good, but colour accuracy is mediocre. If you have 250 to spend and you are looking for a monitor for photo/video editing then you would probably be better off spending the money on a monitor with higher colour fidelity because the refresh rate won’t matter. That said, the colour accuracy is no worse than my previous LG monitor.
The monitor stand has a swivel on it, so the monitor can be rotated on it’s vertical axis. The monitor can also be tilted on the horizontal axis and rotated in “portrait” orientation.
I have only been using the monitor for two days, so can’t comment on how reliable it is long-term, but so-far-so-good.
Its very very responsive and smooth, va panels cant compare in terms of response time/input lag/frame skipping. I can tell right off the bat with the mouse cursor movement alone. Even with a 144hz VA compared to this, there is some motion blur on the VA panel. With this one, which uses a TN panel, there is no motion blur. Its smooth.
Did a frame skip test and it passed easily, to the point where it even caught individual squares changing midway from black to gray. There is no frame skipping. None. Zero. Im using the display with a midrange rx 480 amd card myself and its extremely smooth and consistent. I have freesync enabled alongside enhanced sync, both in gaming and conventional use the transition between windows, animations, movements etc are extremely smooth ofc.
What I like about the 2018 version of the red eagle is how they placed the usb ports on the display. Its placed behind the panel facing downwards. So I have my keyboard and mouse conveniently plugged right into it and it looks orderly still. As opposed to the 2017/2016 version with the silvered neck stand, which had the usb ports on the side of panel facing away from the panel.
As for aesthetics and practicality, its another reason I prefer iiyama over any other monitor brand for general pc use and gaming. Unassuming yet has the features I needed. I also like that they went all black again, removing the silver colour on the neck of the monitor stand that the previous version had.
Speakers arent quality ofc, two 2 watt speakers, but they’re LOUD for monitor speakers. Tip on increasing loudness even further is to enable loudness equalization in win10, it makes a noticeable difference across the board anyway, be it headphones, built in speakers or actual speakers/sets. I dont use computer speakers, I use headphones and if I dont feel like using them just to watch a tutorial video or something, I use the monitor speakers. Not really and audiophile so Im not into speakers clunking up my pc desk.
The tilt, swivel, rotate, elevate stand is seamless and easy, a bit easier than the previous model. It takes very little effort to pivot the monitor in portrait mode, I can do it with 1 finger. To swivel the monitor doesnt take much effort either. To get to the point, any positioning adjustment you try to do with this monitor will have it give you very little resistance while turning/moving it. The only thing that gives resistance is if you’re elevating it from its shortest height. You have to press a button on the back neck of the stand for it to unlock, after u press that, to slide it up or down give little resistance to your push/pull, yet its firm. If you slide it back down to its shortest position, the button clicks in the back to lock it in place.
Overall I give this monitor model a 9 out of 10, the previous version gets an 8/10. They made some qol improvements on this 2018 model, with the usb positioning and all black aesthetic being the major one for me. Not 10/10 because the price…iiyama keeps commanding a higher price for their products in the same class as other brands. I paid 230 GBP for the previous model, back in 2016. This model I paid 218 GBP. Other monitors in its class(144hz, freesync, 1ms response time) cost anywhere from 15% – 20% less, tho u dont get the added features i guess.
I got two of these monitors, and mounted them on a VESA mount so they are close together and the ultra thin bevel really makes the experience quite the something, and instead there is some “blackspace” where a traditional bevel would be which makes the transition between the monitors smoother with no poking out plastic.
The buttons and bottom bevel look nice, and the buttons aren’t mushy and the setup menu gives several neat and appreciable options such as the “Blue Light Reducer” and ability to store settings, and of course FreeSync.
The FreeSync is, well, FreeSync. However this is a 75Hz monitor so you don’t get high-refresh rate, but a smoother (than non-FreeSync 60Hz monitors) viewing and gaming experience. I don’t play games at 144 FPS so I saved money there.
There are also two USB power ports and audio jacks, but I haven’t tested the audio jacks. And standard IO is a DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA
A small issue I had was text ghosting on 0 brightness and contrast below 50, but setting the color mode to “Text” fixed that issue and didn’t introduce any other issues.
The speakers, as usual with monitors, aren’t great but they’re functional and a nice to have.
Overall a nice monitor, but it’s not the best option for strictly gaming, and for professional colour work (photo, video etc.) this is far from what you should be looking for.
