About Us

From her earliest days, creativity and imagination were a big part of Melissa’s life. Outgoing Doug made friends easily thanks to his playful sense of humor and infectious energy. Raised by educators, the young couple knew in their early 20’s they wanted to create meaningful products for children.

After pooling their life savings together, Melissa and Doug worked night and day out of Doug’s parents’ garage to develop their first product. They borrowed Doug’s father’s stick-shift station wagon to make deliveries up and down the East Coast.

For more than a decade, Melissa and Doug focus solely on creating wooden puzzles, over 1,000 styles in all! They decide it’s time to reinvent wooden toys and make them more creative and fun. Toys that don’t just look pretty on a shelf, but also give young children countless ways to play!

A beautiful table and chair set for any children’s room. It was very easy to construct and is very solid and sturdy once assembled.

It looks lovely and is definitely high quality.

My 2 year is quite tall for her age, but it is the perfect size for her as she will be able to grow and continue to use it hopefully for many years to come.

The table has storage underneath so that we can place her stationary for drawing time.

Slightly expensive yes, but you do get what you pay for which is quality and excellence.

    Would highly recommend!!

Arrived well protected in its packaging and is in flat pack form, the box is fairly heavy giving a early hint of the quality of the items inside.
Assembly was fairly simple, my wife had no troubles putting it together following the included instructions.
The wood and fixings used in the constructed are nice and chunky, giving the finished item lots of strength to stand up the inevitable abuse my toddler will give it over the next few years.
My boy is 2 nearly 3 and the sitting position looks perfect for him, he seems comfortable and says he likes his new table and chair.
I sat on the chair myself, the description states a 70kg weight limit, but I’m about 100kg and it still felt very secure and rigid with me sat on it.
The top of the desk has a raised section across the rear and rear corners, useful at stopping items being pushed/falling off the back of the desk. There’s a groove for keeping pens, pencils, rolling pins, anything cylindrical, to stop them rolling off.
The lid lifts to reveal a good sized storage area for books and small toys.
There’s a mechanism for holding the lid up, which also provides a bit of resistance when closing the lid, helping to avoid little fingers getting trapped.
Fantastic desk and chair set, we use it daily for playtime and eating time with our toddler, it’s a good size for him and we should get a good few years use out of it before he outgrows it.

Very easy to assemble. The wood is strong, durable, and not easily scratched. It doesn’t have any cracks either. The surface is smooth and easy to clean with a tissue or wet cloth. I also polished the wood with a mineral oil to help preserve it. We had a lot of fun painting and decorating and designing the table and chair legs.

The chair is impressively robust – it can easily carry the weight of an adult without breaking, slanting, or creaking (though it’s a bit too short for an adult to use normally).

The table is excellent! Its legs are perfectly uniform, so the table doesn’t shake. I love the wide gap in the middle that allows the opening and closing of the lid – makes sure no tiny fingers get trapped underneath. The space inside is great for storing books, stationery, or even little snacks.

Though it is a bit pricey compared to another very similar wooden set that I had, the quality is very impressive. I have no worries that this will last a very long time, even with all the messy and rough handling that the set goes through on a daily basis. Would be happy to recommend.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a very well made desk and chair, ideally suited for home schooling.

It was very easy to assemble with all the wooden parts labelled clearly with letter stickers and the screws and washers clearly marked in a package with numbers.

I’ve included a few photos as well as a video looking around the finished desk and chair which I hope you find helpful.

It took me about 15 to 20 minutes to put the whole thing together. You will need a Phillips screwdriver but that is it, no other tools were necessary. Once built you have simple and tasteful school desk and chair with no exposed screw heads or rough or sharp wooden edges present.

The internal desk lid arm is well made and it stops the desk from accidentally falling shut and catching any little fingers. It can also be locked in the open position if you desire, although it takes a bit of force to re-close it (see my video) if you do. The only Melissa & Doug branding is found on the underside of the chair and on the inside of the desk lid, which I liked as it keeps things understated and subtle. I also liked the design decision to make the desk lid hinges nicely recessed so you have a flat top surface.

The only thing of slight concern worth noting, is that this desk and chair is stated as being suitable for ages 3 to 8. I think that 8 year old top age is optimistic. I’d probably say 6, maybe 7 at a push, is the top age for the average sized child. If you need a sizing guide my eldest daughter is approx 120 cm tall and I’d say she was at the limit of comfortably sitting at the chair and desk. Any taller and it all starts looking a bit small.

Otherwise this is a great set. Easy to build and feels a quality item that will last.

I have been looking for something traditional like this for my child’s bedroom and places like Ikea just dont have what I want. Getting this to review was brilliant as I was going to buy one. The table and chair is the perfect size for your young child. I would say up to about aged 10. The furniture is solid and well made and it was simple to put together as well. It was all assembled with a cross head screwdriver. There was no missing pieces or splits in the wood it was a simple and painful process.

The desk has a hinge on it so you can store books and pencils. Reminds me od the old fashioned tables at school years ago. The chair is matching and can be pushed under the desk to keep compact and neat. I like the colour and simplicity of it, it can be wiped down clean and is a perfect at the moment as we have to home school in lockdown.
