A must have if you download loads of videos and music
I kept running out of storage on my phone so I bought myself a
SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD. Its got super fast read and write speeds and can hold all my videos and music with ease.

I have two of these ( and got cases for them as well) . Saved all my CD collection on them (one at home, one to travel with). A breeze to operate, very fast, very portable. Regular USB adapter very handy.

This is a fast, robust SSD , with 2TB of storage. Purchased at a Amazon deal price that makes this a very cost effective storage solution at 121! Highley recomended. Also can take files from both Mac and PC!

Great external support the device allowing you to easily carry ‘everything’ with you. This is the second hard drive and I’m really happy with them. They do exactly as explained, I use them to backup my business work.

Bought to replace a traditional HDD that had a head failure leading to a 400 plus recovery service cost.

Small, light, fast, is USBC with a USBA adapter. I also have the Extreme Pro version of this drive.

Fingers crossed, so far so good.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNot fast on a Mac, not the drive's fault but bear it in mind
I bought 2 of these to be used as time machines on my M1 max MBP. With read / write speeds up to 2000mbs I was impressed but when tested on Black Magic i was getting slightly less than half of what is on the box.

I spoke with Sandisk (western digital) who said that this is not a thunderbolt compatible device and Macs only work on 3.1 rather than the 3.2 gen 2 that’s needed to get the most out of these drives. I then chatted with Apple who confirmed that all their Macs work on 3.1.

So . . .unless you buy a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 compatible SSD you will only get around 1000mbs and not the 2000 you are probably wanting and paying for. Dont blame the SSD it is a Mac thing but the box could have pointed that out I suppose

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersAlright after a technical glitch
Used this straight out of the box as would be expected. I needed this for music production. I got to 1.8TB of data saved when it crashed. All files had disappeared and my computer said the module was unformatted so I had to start all over again after reformatting. It would seem its not able to cope with being used all day. On a positive note. Very small and portable and I am able to use files from it very quickly when producing music which puts less strain on my iMac’s memory.

Couldn’t believe how small it is, basically the size of a credit card. I need to store and access big files and be able to switch between machines (laptop, macMini) often. I’m always on the go or travelling, this portable SSD is just perfect! Safe file storage. This small drive is also very robust! And you can attach it to a keyring, carabiner hook or similar. Clever.

If you’re going to use one of these as I did, to make an image of your laptop disk for protection against losing your system and all the contents, then you want to have something totally reliable to store it on.

During a promotional period, I made the decision to purchase this product. In my assessment, it’s an excellent hard drive that boasts rapid responsiveness. I’ve employed it to store the video files related to a feature film I recently shot. One noteworthy advantage is that I can edit the content directly on this device without encountering any delays, eliminating the need to transport it to the picture editor for further editing. I found its functionality to be so satisfactory that I proceeded to order an additional unit.

4atab for this price in this compact size is marvelous. I’ve already had the 1TB for a year and it’s great. I’ve read in other review that both these do start disconnecting. I had this problem too but bought a new high bandwidth cable cable and its solved it. Now I’ve got this 4TB one and I’m just as happy with that. It is fast. Really fast. 510Gb transfer worked out to be 3 seconds a gig. It ain’t 1 second. But it’s enough.

Great quality , huge capacity and fast in writing and retrieving data
The investment is truly justified in terms of value for money. Having purchased it a few days ago, I’ve begun transferring all my data from various PCs and laptops. It’s notably swift in writing data compared to other products, and its compact, portable design is a plus. However, it’s important to note that data transfer speed can fluctuate between 80-200 MB per second, potentially influenced by the speed of your PC or laptop. This is due to the bidirectional limitation in data transfer, so it’s advisable not to anticipate exceedingly high speeds on your computer or laptop. Nevertheless, this speed proved satisfactory for me, allowing me to move approximately 1 TB of data in just a few hours.

Gone are the days of waiting hours for slow transfers. An SSD drive is one of the fastest for large file transfer. The Sandisk extreme portable SSD is smaller than my iPhone and fits into the palm of my hand.

It is lightweight compared to my Western drive, and feels rugged to take everywhere with me. Comes with additional adaptors to use the traditional USB A ports but I highly recommend using the USB C.

I knew these back-up drives were getting smaller, but I really hadn’t realised how small this one is. And the little cut-out in the top corner means you can loop it onto something so you don’t lose it. Have done one back-up and it was super fast.

I have two of these SSD’s that I carry with me everywhere and use them to back up my photos and laptop. When I get home I just plug them into my NAS and download images straight to my storage.

On their own they are pretty tough – I have occasionally dropped them with no ill effect. Protected in the small dedicated case, they would have to be trampled by an elephant to break. A bit pricey, but worth it!

Heads up if you’re thinking about buying this! My model is fine, works as it should, but be careful because there are some models out there with a fatal flaw where your data actually starts deleting itself. The way to fix this is through a firmware update by Sandisk. You can check on their website if you have an affected model or not.

Other than that, I’m quite impressed with it and it was super fast to transfer files across. Feel nice and sturdy and is super small!

On three operating systems (Mac, Linux Debian, Windows 10) I have had the same problem. I run an experiment and capture approximately 20Gb->300Gb of data in RAM and then offload it via USB3 to the SanDisk device – I get around 200M bytes/s – not blistering, but fast enough. The problem comes when I have another large file to write, the card just has zero bytes transfer. It sits there for a couple of minutes and then resumes. The files are written correctly, the CRC of the original and copy are the same. It does get very hot, even when idle, much hotter when writing, perhaps it is a thermal problem?

Seems good enough. Goes by work on an older 2014 iMac with the supplied USBC and adapter. Just doesn’t appear. Had to use a different cable and even then, it disconnects after about 10 minutes. Not sure why but works ok on a newer MB Pro. Maybe not for you if you need it to back up an older machine

I primarily brought this drive to use with my MacBook and Time Machine backups. I used to use a smaller thumb sized 2TB drive and these backups would often take over a day to complete, and would very often fail or time out. Upon receiving this the first thing I did was set up this drive with Time Machine, and the first backup completed 150GB in under 45 minutes, a drastic improvement.

The drive is nice and wallet sized, and fits in my rucksacks pockets when I am away. The only draw back is the cable is very short. It is fine when using my laptop at a desk, but when I use it on my lap the drive just dangles by the wire. Being a USB-C connection does allow any wire to be used, which is also handy. The inclusion of a USB-C to USB-A conversion cable is also a bonus.

Bought this for video editing – to use as a work drive, storing the original RAW footage (regularly backed up, obviously) while working in Final Cut Pro.

This handles the transfers effortlessly and allows me to edit 4k footage with numerous effects applied, without dropping frames (Macbook Pro M1 Max) – all while working on the footage stored on the Sandisk SSD, not my internal SSD..

I’ve thrown a lot of work at it and it gets warm, but never hot. It’s small and convenient to carry, fits in a jacket pocket or a backpack pocket quite easily as it’s remarkably thin.

    Can’t fault it.

    Small, practical but overheating
This SSD is great and is smaller than it looks in the pictures. Which is what you want. No issues but I wouldn’t recommend using preinstalled software that comes with it. If you do you make sure you learn how it works first.
It is also overheating when transferring large amounts of data for a while. I don’t know if that’s a problem or not but it could be if SSD is covered and not cooled down. When you touch it it is actually hot but you can still hold it without getting burned. I’m sure SanDisk know what they are doing and it is not a real threat to the device.

Golden Review Award: 65 From Our UsersWorks with iphone and ipad
My main reason for buying this 1TB ssd was for when I travel and and have lots of camera footage to backup from my shoots.
Portability was a big factor, and hoping it would work with iphone (since there isn’t a lot of info on it)
The ssd itself works well however max transfer speed I’ve seen so far is approx 270 MB/S on magicbook pro using default hardware, nonetheless faster than my other HDD’s. I have noticed it heat up a lot in use, more than the 500gb version. In terms of wire / usb-c port connection, it feels a little flimsy and weak. The ssd has a front patterned surface and a rubber back both of which seem to attract dust.

Now onto iphone connection…I have tried both the 1TB and 500GB versions (with the supplied usb-c to usb adapter), both work with iphone (12 mini) via a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter (make sure adapter is original as fake / defective wires have given me an unpredictable intermittent connection). In my experience the 1TB ssd loaded faster than 500GB on iphone.
Now Iphone allows you to view ssd contents BUT as soon you start saving iphone files onto it or tinkering with the ssd’s data you get the infamous ‘This accessory requires too much power’ sign. Even if you re-connect the ssd, once the sign appears once it keeps coming back. What worked to reverse it for me was actually connecting it to a laptop and deleting the iphone files saved on the ssd or the folders where data was altered. Another option is to scan for errors (whilst plugged into the computer), even if there are no errors I found that often the ssd starts working without needing ‘extra power’. Another option to try, this has given mixed results tbh is to connect the ssd to iphone whilst it is switched off then turn it back on and see if the sign reappears.

If you definitely want 2-way iphone-ssd use then you will need a power hub to power the hardrive (and also bypass the ‘…requires too much power’ message, or if none of the above options work to get rid of the message). I bought the ‘…RSHTECH 5 Port USB 3 Hub with 4 USB 3.0 Data Port + 1 Fast Charging Port Portable USB Splitter with 12V/2A…’ because it provided more power i.e 24W compared to similarly priced 5-port power hubs – so far so good! As a bonus iphone was able to read both ssds (1TB + 500gb) at once when plugged into the power hub.

In terms of folder load time there was no difference for me using a power hub vs none. I didn’t notice a difference in performance or predictability between an old iphone lightning cable vs latest lightning to usb-c cable. I have tried iphone (with ssd connected) plugged into a usb wall socket vs plugged into an apple 30w adapter, again no obv difference.

Another point to mention, with big folders around 90gb (raw files/4k videos) my iphone struggled to read the content despite loading for 20+ mins? The successful cut off for me has been around 65gb folder size max, anything larger definitely gets divided into smaller folders. I did notice some large 4k videos load slowly and freeze midway, but the ssd did let me save them directly on my iphone despite this so was able to view them better that way.

My Sandisk ssd-iphone experience so far (in summary):
Option 1 – viewing/saving ssd content on iphone -> no power hub required
Option 2 – deleting/altering ssd content and/or saving iphone content onto ssd -> power hub required

Hope that helps, I struggled A LOT to find info on iphone sandisk ssd connection so thought I’d share all of my recent findings.

On a sep note – the ssds worked absolutely fine with ipad Air 4th gen utilising it’s usb-c port so no adapter required. Literally a case of plug and play – and definitely a lot faster than on iphone.
