Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe sopranos is my all time favourite show so i just had to get it on blu ray. However, although the picture quality is amazing and a joy to see i don’t really like how the discs are set out. I was expected them to be in desperate cases for each season but they weren’t. It’s an amazing box set anyway just make sure you know how the discs are set out first.

Have just finished watching all these DVD’s and enjoyed them. However, the sound on them was fairly poor – had to increase the volume on the TV substantially. On one disk 2 episodes were find the 1 did not play well. I was surprised with these problems. The packaging overall was OK but when taking a disk out others also slid out – not a good design.

When watching it sometimes the disc would still,
be spinning and the film would.

Freeze for a couple of seconds,
    and come back.

    Apart from that AMAZING SERIES,
    it’s my first time.

Watching this and all the discs,
    are in brand new.

    Untouched condition, just
    like I paid for.

    With no scratch or fingerprint,
    in sight.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersI love this series so thought I would get it on Blu-Ray for best quality and it also costs a fortune for digital ownership. Strange, as the digital version uses no resources to make it which seems backwards especially in these environmentally responsible times.
This series is easily in my top 5 of all time, my review however is mainly for the disc case it comes in.
Discs are stacked on top of each other on retaining clips so its very hard to find and pop out the next disc. I would not have purchased if I knew this before hand as it’s not practical for use.
    Great series though.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI pretty much stopped watching TV the past 10 years. I also never got to watch this show back in the day but after my friends at work suggested i try this series, i gave it a chance and i have ZERO REGRETS!

I was hooked after the first few episodes and i was watching 3-4 episodes every night until i finished it. Such a great show. The product itself though, ehhh they could of done a better job. The discs are packed in tightly and its a hassle to change them around.

Enjoyable series following The Sopranos mafia family over several years, as the children are growing up. Took me a while to get into it – the characters are not very likeable (most of them are mafia hoods after all) although the performances are excellent all round. Too much swearing for my liking, the scenes of violence were sometimes shocking but, dare I say it – thrilling. Surprisingly there were also many humorous moments, some of which made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed the last series most of all (curiously this was split into two parts – Season 6 and Season 6 The Final Episodes), as by then I’d finally got to grips with who was who, some of the characters had grown on me, and things were rounded off as it reached it’s denouement. Hailed by many as a classic, I wouldn’t quite go that far and I wouldn’t watch it again as I have for example Breaking Bad and Fargo, but it is up there as one of the best and anyone who likes top quality series should at least give it a try.

Never watched The Sopranos when it first came out, but I’ve been binge watching these now and I love it. The show itself is great, no issues there at all, would recommend to anyone who enjoys mob/Mafia films/shows.

As for the product itself, the image and sound quality is perfect, again, no issues there at all.

But as others have mentioned, the case the discs comes in sucks, at first I thought people were overreacting, but once you want to go the the second set of discs you realise their complaints. You have to take out all the one set of discs to get to the next, which makes keeping them in order a pain to say the least, and it’s makes it too easy to damage them.

My only recommendation to avoid damages and frustration is just do what I did and take out the disc you want and put the previous one on another set of discs and rearrange them when you’ve watched them all, each holder holds more than the amount of discs on them, so adding more doesn’t make a difference.

Sounds like a small complaint, but when your bingeing a show, it gets annoying.

But for the price, I can only complain a little.
If you like The Sopranos or want to get into it, this is perfect, just the case is kinda lame.

I bought this because I needed to she my other half what a great series the Sopranos is, I purchased the blu ray version for clearer viewing. The only disappointment in purchasing this product was I purchased it on the 17th December, it was dispatched on the 18th December, and it arrived on the 31st December. When I purchased it, the dates given were expected delivery 24th-31st December, this was the slowest delivery I have ever received off Amazon. It must have been delivered in the back of an asthmatic ant! It wasn’t part of the prime package but come on, it’s the 21st century, not the era of horse and cart!
Product great as expected, delivery by company who it was purchased from pathetic!

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersThis Tv series was made between 1999 to 2007 and follows crime boss Tony Soprano who’s hitting a mid life crises. Having set up home in Tony’ swimming pool, a family of geese fly away bringing on a blackout for Tony. Remaining un-diagnosed, Tony is referred to a psychiatrist. The story unfolds through various events which are then often retold through Tony’ POV to the psychiatrist.
This stout card box set features a lift off lid and contains seven ‘standard’ sized DVD cases, each of which contains 4 DVDs. All six series are included [series 6 is actually in two parts] and while some have ‘extras’ these are limited to commentary voice overs on about a quarter of the episodes. There is also a neat booklet that gives a brief overview of each episode. Confusingly, episode lengths vary, especially in the first two series. Similar in many respects to ‘Weeds’ this has the lead character become something of an anti-hero.
Rated 18 this has plenty of swearing, violence, topless nudity, occasional full frontal [from season 4?] but despite this, it’s all much less than the publicity would suggest. Personally I preferred series 1-3, which centred around Tony’ impending breakdown. Series 4 introduced other relationship issues, 5 descends into drug dealing/usage and dream states while 6 [pt1] seems to go nowhere and 6 [pt2] returns to the original. I actually liked the ending, you need to listen to the lyrics and note the subtle volume changes and if you’d paid attention to the psychiatric meetings you should be able to ‘get it’.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersAfter waiting for what seemed an eternity for this show to come down in price,I finally got it…and it was worth the wait..!!.

Having read some of the negative reviews (some totally stupid) I can say they are completely wrong about this show…it’s brilliant…even after all this time…The other negatives complained about certain discs not playing…and or missing…then before they wrote a review about this collection and giving it One star…perhaps they should have resolved their issues first.
We all know about the show….well we should by now…so I’m not going into what it’s about or story line…My review is simply about the discs themselves run on a sound surround system…

Firstly….it’s made by HBO…yet another great collection from them ( I also have Nikita…Wow)..they seem to put together the discs well and the cuts made so you don’t see any ads was spot on.

Secondly…the sound quality was great…speech was locked in to the centre and moved around the speakers where necessary…There’s not actually that much steering involved but where it’s needed it’s there.

Thirdly…The picture quality itself was superb…and typically as the shows progressed in time it got better and better…due to better cameras I suspect and technology moving forward…For instance. The first 2 series ran at 20/23 Mbps,,,,but towards the latter discs it improved to 30/35 Mbps…and it showed in the detailing, contrast, and movement.

Anyway…like most on here that loved this …it’s a great show from start to finish…get it while you can, and you won’t regret it…Cheers.

Quite simply the best thing that has ever been put to screen, either on TV or cinema! As soon as it started on CH4 I was instantly hooked, from the opening credits and the opening sene. What makes it stand out is how character driven the show is and not just the main protagonist of the show Tony Soprano but also his family and his other family the mob. A fantastic representation of the pressures Tony faces juggling his life with his wife and children and his life in the Mafia all while seeing a psychiatrist. The development of every character in the show is brilliant, making you feel like you get to know them personally. The writing, production, directing and acting are second to none often giving you the feeling that each episode is mini movie, brilliant story lines from episode to episode with great sub plots in between and you find yourself loving and empathising with some of the characters even though they’re portraying totally immoral and despicable people. The combination of humour, violence and the immorality of the mob world make this a truly unmissable drama and a must watch for anyone who has not yet seen it. Quite a controversial ending to the show which some people felt let the show down but I personally thought the ending was great, just depends on how you interpret it yourself, so I won’t give anything away to anyone who hasn’t watched the show yet. First bought the box set on DVD and now have the blu-ray version, worth every penny as I watch the box set at least once a year over a three or four week period. So if you haven’t seen it get it bought and get it watched….Capiche!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our Users“What, no f-ing ziti?”

I clearly remember watching the Sopranos on opening night January 10, 1999. I was immediately hooked. I was equally excited for HBO to release the complete series on Blu Ray. When I heard the complete series was being released on BR, I cheered. This review is focused on the packaging and HD quality of this new Sopranos Complete Series released on Blu Ray. I am both a fan and a collector. The complete Blu Ray series was released on September 8, 2014, in the UK. The series is “all regions.” I paid $145.00 US which included shipping. I choose the cheapest shipping, which I regret because of the time it took to have the package arrive to the States. I purchased the series on 9/8/14, and the package arrived 9/24/14 – 16 days. This is standard. I am impressed that Amazon UK sent a shipping feedback email. Unfortunately, the packaging of the box set was compromised in a few places, primarily on the corners of the outer sleeve. It is too bad that other groups don’t take clues from Criterion, in particular, with special box sets (meaning, the quality of the paper weight of the outer sleeve). As a collector, it is noticed when these special box sets reflect better packaging (meaning, heavier card stock on the outer sleeve, in particular). That being said, the inner packing was not damaged.

My box set is also having a encoding issue. The disc loads well and displays the menu. But after pushing the “play” button it takes several attempts for the episode to eventually load play. I use a OPPO BDP-83SE and it is up to date with firmware. I am noticing a small ripple effect that others are having the same issue. Last evening it took almost 20 to 30 minutes for the episode to eventually play. It is not a region issue because the complete series is listed as “all regions” and my player has been modified to be region free.

Lastly, on the downside of the new box set is you are not able to select scenes for each episode. I was surprised this was the case.

Here comes the good news. For me, loading that first Blu Ray disc was as exciting as watching the premiere. For Blu Ray geeks like myself, I am always disappointed when a Blu Ray disc is not truly full 1080p and is “letter-boxed, cut-back crud.”Or, selected scenes have been restored to 1080p followed by other scenes that have not been restored to HD, which is an obvious method of cutting corners.

I am glad to report that the HD quality of this Blu Ray box set is truly incredible! Every scene is breathtaking. It’s much better than the first-generation intermediate Sopranos Blu Ray series released a few years ago. I feel like I am watching the series for the first time. It is spectacular! The quality of HD draws out details that were quietly hiding. This allows the viewer to be deeply immersed into the scenes. For example, being inside the HD “Bada Bing,” I felt compelled to place dollar bills on my coffee table. Amazing! Lastly, the high level of HD also highlights the incredible acting. Well done, HBO! Fans will be happy with the special features as well. I am truly impressed that this series was released in true HD fashion. If you are a fan of the series, this is a MUST-HAVE purchase. The complete series will be released in the US on 10/4/14. I am curious if HBO will release a limited edition Blu Ray box set with a few cool bells and whistles. As of this moment, I am more than happy. “Here comes the Prozac!”

I use an OPPO BDP-83SE Blu Ray player. OPPO players are bare none the best BR players on the planet!!

I’m (maybe temporarily) rating this One Star in the hope it will get people reading it and someone answering my query.
IT DID. AND THANKS TO THOSE WHO GAVE INPUT. I STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE YET – BUT I’VE ELIMINATED THE DISC AS THE PROBLEM AFTER TRYING IT ON ANOTHER BDP-TV COMBO. (IT MAY STILL BE A STRANGE INTERACTION OF H/W & S/W WITH PART OF THE FAULT LYING ON THE DISC – BUT I’VE NO EVIDENCE FOR THAT AND IT SHOULDN’T DETER YOU BUYING THIS GREAT BUT PRICEY PACKAGE)
I’M THEREFORE RE-RATING BASED ON THE LAST SENTENCE IN THIS ‘REVIEW’.
I originally bought the DVD box set and had only watched Series 1 & 2 and Episodes 1 & 2 of Series 3 before buying the BluRay set (DVD set now sold via Amazon..).
I sat down in great anticipation to take up where I left off and watched Episode 3 of Series 3. A disaster. The lip sync was SO far out I couldn’t anywhere near correct it via either/both the TV or the (Oppo 95EU) BluRay player settings.
When I tried the next Episode (4 of Series 3) and a random few of Series 1 & 2 – NO lip sync problems… None.
This would tend to point the finger at the transfer rather than any of my kit.
It follows that I’m nervous other later Episodes are also duff but I won’t find out until too late to return.

Any experiences, observations or thoughts out there – very gratefully received.

P.S. The picture quality everywhere I’ve looked kicks DVD a long way into touch.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersChances are you’re reading this to assess whether or not the upgrade is worth it?

Well, in my opinion, it is. Most definitely.

The picture quality is fabulous. A few scenes throughout the first season look slightly off (yellowed skin tones/questionable black levels) but that really is being nit-picky. It’s a huge step up from the DVD release.

So far, after having it for three days now, I’m up to the end of season two and the picture quality is basically flawless. Consistently beautiful and the novelty is yet to wear off.

The programme itself needs little introduction. Although the first season has a few goofy bits (the car chase through the grounds in the pilot episode & AJ’s school fight in particular) it’s still compelling viewing from the off.

I’m seriously enjoying the journey again, and from now until the last frame of that glorious ending, no doubt that the finesse of this fabulous blu ray release will continue to heighten my enjoyment of it all.

Great packaging, epic quality transfer and, as always, really top notch delivery time/packaging etc.

Great job HBO. ‘All good things..’

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersAt last, a truly AMAZING and beautiful transfer 100% worthy of this essential landmark series.

I report this as, IMHO, the pilot and earlier episodes of Season 1 in DVD format were at times a touch grainy and ‘flat’ – more like ‘video’ quality in some scenes – a factor exacerbated by the way in which ‘we’ are now viewing TV shows on far higher quality flat-screen TVs that reveal imperfections. Moreover, at times were some issues with the sound in terms of vocal synchronisation on DVD.

However, all of this has thankfully and gloriously been repaired and re-mastered to a level of absolute cinematic perfection.

From the iconic title scene, the picture is truly stunning and the pulsating music rich and exciting, with the anamorphic depth and colour palate of episode1, like a series of Caravaggio paintings!

This is one of the most satisfying and gorgeous transfers and Blu-ray releases I have ever had the pleasure to watch and, with it arriving yesterday, I am so besotted that I stayed in last evening and am already nearly on to S2!

A must-have IMHO for any fans of these truly brilliant series. 10/10

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFirstly… congratulations to Amazon where customer service is concerned. I live in the Irish Republic and the speed with which I acquired the set after ordering was first class, not more than two or three days. I’ve always found your customer service nothing short of excellent.

I am a big fan of the gangster film genre, but somehow I’ve overlooked this series completely. At James Gandolphini’s passing I made a pact with myself to get these shows watched (for fear of being whacked…). I’ve only watched the first two episodes of series 1 but things look very good. Typical of any good gangster film there’s great characterization, snappy dialogue and good musical scoring too.

A lot of people rate this as some of the best TV of all time; I’ve given it four stars for now, I’d love to think that will be five come the end of the series.

PS. I’ve read previous customers had issues over the box set itself. The `new packaging` is very good, the box is smart and robust, as are the cases, The DVDs are securely stored inside the cases with no risk of damage.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is not really for family viewing as it contains images of sexuality, a lot of profanity and extreme violence. It depicts life in a mafia family in a very realistic way. The men of the family, when they are together cuss a lot – well, practically every other word at times, and this series doesn’t really exclude anything profane or violent. And “hitting” a member who has been disloyal, is just like a bad day at the office for these guys, and then the contrast

Mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), has a home life similar to most other men. A wife that nags him and growing kids who’s education that he worries a lot about. But these kids are not afraid of their dad and also seem to know all about his mob connections, and are wily enough to “bend the truth” about the occupation of their father when asked about it.

All the pressure of work and family life has created problems for Tony Soprano, so much so that he is agoraphobic and this necessitates him visiting a female psychiatrist who he does a good job of screwing up due to who he is.

Tony also has a mother who rants and raves about her son’s inattentiveness, and her brother, Tony’s uncle who is the godfather – in name only, because Tony’s the real boss. Then there’s the rest of the family. Other “soldiers” that includes his nephew Christopher who likes drugs and tends to get very hot-headed and will kill at the drop of a hat.

The hits made by Tony and his men are quite brutal with the victims often being cut up into pieces and disposed of. Although such scenes are suggestive more than graphic, but at times a severed hand or head is to be seen.

I bought this series when I heard that James Gandolfini had died of a heart failure whilst on vacation. I had watched a couple of the series on my Sky box, but couldn’t really wait for the next series. I always thought there was something of the loveable rogue (albeit extreme) with Tony Soprano so excellently portrayed by Gandolfini.

If your not squeamish about violence and can handle profanity, then I would say that this box series is an excellent memento of The Sopranos..

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI remember everyone talking about ‘The Sopranos’ during the years that it aired on HBO, but a) I didn’t subscribe to HBO, and b) I didn’t think I’d be interested in a show about the mafia.

Fast forward to June 2013. One night not long after James Gandolfini died, my husband and I (now living in England) happened to catch a one-off episode of ‘The Sopranos’ on telly. We were immediately and absolutely hooked. We sat spellbound for the entire hour. As soon as it was over, my husband fired up the laptop, and ordered the boxed set.

Delivery was made a few days later and we have just finished watching the entire series. Some nights/week-ends, we’d watch 2, 3, 4 (or more!) episodes. The writing and acting are flawless.

I am a 59-year old woman. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d enjoy something like this. But I certainly have, and so has my husband. Yes, it’s graphic – but the violence and language and nudity are all elemental to the story and not just thrown in there for ratings purposes.

Now I understand what all the hoopla was about back in the day, and I continue to ask myself why on earth did I wait so long before ever watching this?

If you’re looking for some compelling television viewing to tide you over the upcoming winter months, and you’ve never seen ‘The Sopranos’, do yourself a favour and order now.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersThe Sopranos is the greatest piece of work in any moving image medium that I know of. Quite a statement I know, but hear me out… and I will take you through the [obvious] facts of the case, as well as my own feelings on the matter.

First of all without doubt. The writing is brilliant: pared to the bone realism interspersed with heart-wrenching drama, gut-wrenching violence, and heart-breaking emotion. Secondly. The acting is both superbly realistic, and yet highly characterised and supercharged with emotion. Thirdly. The cinematography [and it is a truly Cinematic TV series] is both beautiful and unflinching. It looks as fresh – and feels as gripping – watching the first series again now, as it did when I saw it 15 yrs ago.

But for obvious reasons, I will mainly talk about the acting….

After last week’s tragic news about the death of James Gandolfini i’ve been watching clips, scouring the web for his [often bit-part] movie performances, and reading about his life. If you want to see something of James Gandolfini the man, I would recommend his two documentaries for HBO about US soldiers experiences of PTSD – ” Wartorn 1861-2010 [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC ]” and ” Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq [DVD] [2007] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC ].”

If you want to know about James Gandolfini the actor then purchase this DVD box set. He took a character who in baser hands would just be a 260lb New Jersey-Italian version of Godzilla, and together with David Chase and a bunch of genius writers, turned him into an Everyman for our dystopian times.

We see the look of pain and childlike shame and helplessness when he tries to confront his mother, and then minutes later the cold eyed rage as he pistol-whips a junior goon with a telephone handset. Every episode is a roller-coaster of adrenalin, laughter, and seriously heavy themes. It says as much about the conflictedness of modern fatherhood and the hypocrisy of the modern Catholic church as it does about globalisation, and the amount that contemporary Governments and Corporations have ingested, and even added to, the ethics of Gangster-Capitalism. And not just Tony – every one of the leading actors give performances of incredible versatility and power.

But every one of them benefits hugely every time they share the screen with Gandolfini. In his film roles he is a great character actor, even when his characters don’t get as much screen time as they deserve [see Night Falls On Manhattan [1996] [DVD] [2001 ], or The Mexican [DVD ] – where the film noticeably loses pace, or any sense of realism after he is killed off with almost three quarters of an hour to go!]. But in The Sopranos he seems to both dominate every scene he is in, while bringing out the very best in his colleagues. It’s hard to equate the Alpha Male who is Tony Soprano with the mortified, mumbling, man who speaks about his acting career on “In The Actors Studio: James Gandolfini” [available on youtube].

If you’ve never seen The Sopranos before, but have noticed the outpourings of grief over the death of James Gandolfini – from ordinary fans and from many, much more famous collaborators and fellow actors: then I beg you to buy this box set. You will not have spent a wiser 45 quid in many a long year. I am very jealous of the experience that is about to unfold in front of your eyes and ears [did I mention how good the music is?] for the first time over the coming days and weeks: until you too, are haunted by the sound of Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. No, really… you will. Tell me about it – I radically reviewed my opinion of Steely Dan’s early career after listening to one episode of The Sopranos [can’t remember which but it involves Tony’s sister – another amazing performance].

For the rest of us who watched this series live, and countless times later on the tapes we made of it: get this and watch the beauty of the cinematography, the exquisite staging and settings – and most of all those magnificent faces – on a new TV or monitor and prepare to be amazed and touched again by this magnificent piece of art. 6/5!

And God bless James Gandolfini. As an actor, and as a man, he had as much of an affect on me – in my late 30s – as Humphrey Bogart had when I was 11 or 12. I learned more about parenting from James Gandolfini than I ever did from any of the books I bloody read. Pity my children if you wish, but watch this box-set and you will understand.

The Sopranos is a masterpiece, one of the few television series that unfolds like a great novel, with compelling writing and characters. The series is groundbreaking, with particular relevance to Western culture due to its focus on the mental health problems that plague our society, such as depression and anxiety. The premise is relatively simple: Tony Soprano, the protagonist, is a Mafia boss in New Jersey who struggles to balance his work and home life, and consequently seeks the advice of a psychiatrist. The two families of Tony Soprano cause him considerable stress and he suffers from panic attacks as a result.

The Sopranos comprises hundreds of characters, and watching the series for a second or third time is therefore more rewarding and enhances the audience’s understanding. The series tackles difficult issues such as family, gender roles, sex and the climate of rage buried within the American psyche. Despite criticism of the show due to its casual violence, I believe the bloodshed serves a purpose and is never gratuitous. The sixth season is the best in my opinion, but all seasons have something to offer. There is never a weak episode, but unfortunately some episodes are much better than others. This is not the case with The Wire, where all episodes are consistently good.

I would strongly recommend The Sopranos to all lovers of television. I would rate it just behind The Wire in terms of overall quality, but above Breaking Bad.

I snapped this up at 40 as a birthday present (for me!) and it’s one helluva bargain. I see the price has gone back up to 50 as I write this, but really don’t let that put you off – a whole 80+ episodes of a brilliant piece of TV history is worth so much more.

My wife and I caught a few episodes when it originally aired on UK telly, but it was the re-run on Sky Atlantic that did for us. We found the one week wait for the next episode was agonizing, so had to get the box set. We are totally addicted and can watch three episodes on the trot if left to our own devices. We’re going to be gutted when we’ve finished watching it all (which won’t be long now as we’re well in to series 5)

With regard to the actual box set – I was worried that I should wait for the release on Blu Ray, but my Sony Blu Ray player does a good job upscaling the DVD content, and the end result is very watchable (half way between off-air SD and HD quality).
I was also concerned by reviews talking about judder during camera pans. And indeed this was noticeable during the Series 1 episodes. I’m glad to say the problem seems to be restricted to that series, and a couple of moments in Series 5 (strangely).

We’ve not watched any of the ‘extras’ yet, so I can’t comment on those.

All in all, a brilliant set. The greatest piece of TV I’ve seen (apart from *maybe* The Wire)

  22. ARBYasmintbdce says:

I bought The Sopranos after reading just how good it was.

The only problem is that I also bought the box set of 24 at the same time and I’m going to have to make a major adjustment to the change of pace before I can get around to actually watching it!

Managed only one episode so far, and I need an episode of The Mentalist or 30 Rock (both of which I bought at the same time) to ‘recover’ from bingeing on 24!

    After having watched the series…

Tony Soprana is a brutal sociopath who heads a crew rather than a Family, and makes his money in a seedy, rundown part of Jersey.

    ‘Cuddly’ he is not.

His wife is a total hypocrite, more concerned with his infidelities than the violent and murderous way he makes his money.

Chase also shows the day-to-day tedium (bordering on banality) of Soprano’s life, which although accurate makes for even more tedious viewing in many Episodes leaving you to decide whether to ‘skip’ them or do something else until they play out.

So, how to rate The Sopranos?

You have unsympathetic characters (and a few almost laughable caricatures) indulging in casual violence and murder, intermixed with boredom.

On the basis that it is more believable than the ‘suspend ALL belief before watching’ 24 (5 stars), I might as well give it the same even if only for the acting and ‘understated’ climax to the series.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis item was received in perfect condition and we are going to be soooo sorry when we’ve seen all 6 series through. It is an unforgettable work. Tony Soprano is a mafia boss who lives a somewhat schizophrenic life: a good father to his children, and, according to his tenets, a good husband to his wife whilst indulging in quite a lot of sex with other women, shady business deals, violence and murder.
Not hesitating to kill viciously in cold blood, he nonetheless cannot quieten his conscience. He tries to love his hard-faced mother and because of all this he suffers from depression and he seeks advice from a Psychiatrist who comes to fear him, but who cannot quite stop seeing him. Tony’s beautifully played character (just watch his face when he is really up against it, absolutely expressionless and dead!) is just one important part of this many faceted story: love. lust, family loyalty, infidelity, faithfulness, religion, violence, tenderness all pulled together by an excellent cast. There are surprises in the story along the way which, although shocking, make you gasp and then fall about laughing.
We are now in the middle of series three, watching, self-indulgently, sometimes two or three instalments on the trot. But we try to be sparing – like I said, I am going to be sooo sorry when it comes to an end – it’s brilliant.

Nothing short of brilliant, The Sopranos made a splash at TV dramas, with one of the ultimate anti-heroes. Not only Tony Soprano is one the most compeling characters in the history of television, the problems that make his life so difficult are not so different from the others that do the same to our life as well: mother, wife, daughter, “job associates”.
Eventhough Tony Soprano is the “capo” of the Jersy mob, the show goes way beyond the tradicional mob movies: of course he is one tradicional mobster, other than the fact that he has a shrink to make him deal with the problems of his life that, most of the time, have nothing to do with what he does for a living…
In the most extreme circumnstances, we find Tony making some human decisions that level with some of absolute rage and anger, but, at the end of the day, if there had to be an ultimate mob boss, I’de like that to be Tony Soprano, because he is such a nice guy, a goodfella…
Noteworth is the fact that Nancy Marchand had health issues that held the part of Livia Soprano from being one of the most manupulative “villans” in the history of TV, and she was just another mother, another wife…
In the end, I’ve seen this show on TV as it went along, I’ve seen it on divx twice and I now bought it in DVD, so I’m just about ready to take another peak at it and I know it’s pretty much going to be just like my first time…

About the box set, there should be more subtitles available: I’m yet to know what’s the extra expense to put the subtitles for all of the Western Europe…

    TAKE NOTE!
So no season has neither French Language nor French subtitles in them. It also doesn’t include Dutch, Arabic, Hebrew or Icelandic subtitles at all! So if you heard someone say that this box does include these subtitles they are wrong, or more to the point: the cases in the box are lying!!!

    Hope this helped someone 🙂
