Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersImpressive bit of kit. I have mine connected to HomeKit, easy to set up and install. Mine is done with batteries, but it is pleasing to note this can be wired if you have an existing doorbell feed.

Having used a ring doorbell and a blink doorbell, neither fully satisfied my needs.
Along came Aqara G4 and this little beauty ticks all the boxes!
24hr recording, incredible connection speed via the app, perfect sound quality from afar, precise motion detection, AI face recognition, Apple home control, come on this is beyond good! This device is cutting edge!
    PERFECT

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI 1st purchased one of these 3 months ago, and returned it after a week, (Was running it on batteries), it was sluggish and missing loads of events.

I was recently advised it was much better if mains powered so decided to give it another go, it really is like a totally different product when on mains power, perfect 24/7 recording to SD card, instant notifications through HomeKit, Brilliant, so much better than the old Ring bell it replaced.

If you use Apple HomeKit and mains wire this you won’t find better.

1st foray into video doorbells and I’m happy so far.

Device was installed with external AC power.
This meant a drill through masonry as there was no existing power connection. (The AC transformer is standard for doorbells, any one that provides up to 24v 0.5A is fine, plenty on ebay. Just test one out with it before you install to make sure you don’t have a dodgy transformer and test it for 12 hours at least and make sure there is good ventilation around the power socket as they do get very warm).

I have a pebbled exterior and had to wedge a small piece of plastic to one side and then drill the screws to secure the backing which was now level due to the plastic piece. If you have bricks then this won’t apply to you.

The angled backing plate wasn’t needed. FYI instructions that came with item are a joke. Download pdf from the amazon listing, it’s halfway down the page and miles better. The chime needs usb power and I used an old iPhone power adaptor.

Doorbell was set to low sensitivity as I live on a busy road and it only picked up loitering when someone came into the driveway and it caught the 3 randy fox thruple having loud enjoyment eith each other on the grass. (Dirty dirty b**tards, they carried on despite me mooing loudly through the 2 way doorbell comms).

The Aqra app is brilliant, can scroll back on timeline for 7 days and view video when motion is detected as well as saving loitering moments and when doorbell is pressed. I have lots of clips now of friends and family pulling faces and making gestures on it. Lovely!

The 1080p resolution will do me and the wide angle means I catch my neighbours entrance as well as 5 houses across from me.

I give it 4 stars because the chime needs to be less than 5m to the doorbell. This may be my issue as I live in a house built in the 70s and the walls are thick. Need to use a hotspot downstairs etc but if you are in a newer dwelling then you should be OK. I also have to restart the app as the video hangs now and then when I go live to doorbell.
A few folk online have complained the device as 2.4ghz only on WiFi. For me, I could never use 5ghz on account of the thickness of my walls.

Overall, I’m happy with this. Not used homekit and the NEST integration isn’t great as it would be nice to have all the features available in Aqra app on Nest.

I will use IFTTT with facial recognition in the future but it’s not one of my main requirements. The 7 day storage is excellent, no subscription needed and ill be using the NAS feature to offload footage when that becomes available via firmware in the future.

If anyone as questions please let me know. Happy to help.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good video doorbell!

eat doorbell. Works out of the box with Homekit Secure Video without needing any 3rd party app.

Minus 1 star since the box doesn’t include any instructions for mounting or specifications.

I had to email aqara and they sent me a link to their mounting instructions video, but I can’t post it here as external links aren’t allowed so you’ll just have to do the same or find it on youtube.

At least I can provide the PSU input requirements that are also missing from the box:
    12V-24V AC 0.2A 50/60Hz 8V-24V DC 0.5A

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhat separates this from others is HomeKit integration which is seamless, has local recording on sd card on the repeater inside the house not on the doorbell, cloud recording and you can send it to a NAS. It is a great modern design and is bigger than most smart doorbells. The repeater inside the house is what connects to the wifi and then it makes its own connection to the doorbell. Other doorbells I have had have all struggled with the wifi connection as the doorbell is what connects to the wifi. With this one the signal is much more stable because it’s inside the house. The app is quite intuitive and opens quickly even outside my home network on 4G. The video quality is good and the night vision is on par with others. The HomeKit integration works really well in my experience. Some have had issues with it but mine seems rock solid now. Overall a great doorbell and great for the price.

Now to the couple of annoying things with it which may get addressed. On battery alone I found it to be a bit flaky on the response in HomeKit and connectivity. The battery life is nowhere near what they suggest as I have a lot of movement with cars etc so I guess it can’t be helped. Once I hard wired the doorbell it was rock solid connectivity and much more responsive with less disconnects. Highly recommend hard wiring it. I bought a 9 AC power supply with a 5 metre cable from Amazon which did the job.
The only other annoyance was I wanted to fit this on the right hand side of my door as you look at it so I got a better view of my driveway with the angle bracket included. The problem is the security screw holding it on to the back plate is only on the right hand side so I couldn’t use it as it was next to the wall. I had to secure it to the backplate with it off the wall and then purchased some T-Rex extreme hold double sided tape to stick it to the door frame which was plastic. Overall a fantastic doorbell and the best I have tested so far.

Excellent battery powered device that has really nice camera settings from 720 to 1080p resolution. The sound is clear and I love the recording feature on it. Perfect if you are in the Apple eco-system (iPhone, Apple TV, Macs, HomePod) as some of your Apple devices work as Hubs/bridges to create assure good connectivity with the device. Another plus is automation and face recognition. Glad I have bought this doorbell, definitely worth it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe Aqara Video Doorbell G4 is an exceptional addition to any smart home, especially for those embedded within the Apple ecosystem. The seamless integration with HomeKit and the synchronicity with all HomePods in my house ensure that I never miss a visitor.

What impresses me the most is the doorbell’s ability to instantly display video on my Apple TVs as soon as someone presses the button. The exceptional clarity of both daytime and nighttime cameras, along with very good sound quality, takes home security to another level.

The built-in AI, which automatically recognises faces from my Apple photo library and announces their names, is an innovative and personalized touch. The doorbell also boasts a built-in anti-tamper alarm, which significantly enhances home security.

In a market saturated with subscription-based models, the Aqara Video Doorbell G4’s lack of subscription fees is a breath of fresh air. The dual power modes—battery and hard-wiring—allow for flexibility to cater to individual needs and circumstances.

However, there are a couple of areas for improvement. The high battery consumption can be an issue for those who wish to fully utilise all features, but can’t use the hard-wired feature. For such situations, I would recommend investing in a set of rechargeable batteries. The second downside is the non-replaceable self-adhesive pad, which complicates repositioning the doorbell. Aqara’s suggested solution of using double-sided 3M tape is a workaround, but this aspect could be better addressed by the manufacturer.

In conclusion, the Aqara Video Doorbell G4 is a feature-rich, user-friendly, and flexible doorbell solution. Despite a few minor drawbacks, its benefits far outweigh the downsides, making it a highly recommendable choice for any smart home.

The doorbell – though expensive when compared to non-HomeKit doorbells – generally works really well. The video is high resolution and loads extremely quickly, it captures motion early and is reliable through HKSV.
The battery does drain quickly but if you are able to hardwire the product then there is generally nothing to complain about.
Would highly recommend the doorbell for its functionality, speed and design.

Bought this two months ago and its worked faultlessly. I’m using it connected to the old door bell power supply do can’t comment on battery usage. Easy to setup. Picture quality fantastic. Easy and powerful control within home app. Had a number of people comment on how smart it looks. Already had two firmware upgrades adding new features/improvements. And again, easy to apply upgrades via iPhone. Replaced a troublesome ring doorbell.

Really easy to install and worked flawlessly first time for me with Apple HomeKit & Secure Video. I ran it on batteries for the first couple of weeks after which it reported a 60% capacity remaining so have since added a power supply and it works well on eitherDaytime colour definition is excellent, night B&W vision less clear. My only criticism is the vertical coverage doesn’t extend to parcels left on the ground but I knew this before purchase & was OK with this compromise. All over, pleased with this device.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have hard wired the door bell using the ring plug in adapter and it works absolutely fine. I have not put batteries in. I have also used the angle plate to angle the door bell which is included in the box.
Works with HomeKit flawlessly you can answer on your apple watch, the homepod will chime as well as the chime which is included in the box. The doorbell does need to be within 5 metres for beat results the aqara app will tell you the signal strength and you can experiment accordingly. Apple tv also displays the doorbell. I was using ring doorbell 3 now while the video quality isnt as great the features outweigh the quality. I have downloaded the aqara skill now my echo will also chime and display the front door however very slight delay. I am yet timo put a memory card in as i want the device to record all the time this is only an option when hard wired i believe. No subscription as it is saved locally on the memory card aswell as 7 day cloud free from Aqara.

I bought this as I couldn’t justify another year of Ring subs for no real benefit. Looked at the Reolink and the G4 and was about to push the buy button on the Reolink wired until I read that there was still issues with ONVIF in the latest firmware and that the v4.01 firmware had made a difference on the G4.

The G4 doorbell is the same size as the Gen 2 Ring doorbell but looks more modern and is simply a great doorbell. Good price at 109 and good quality.

Excellent video doorbell. Ignore the reviews about hit and miss motion detection. This will be fixed in the next update. This is a brand new product, so will always have a few small issues. Trust me this is a great smart doorbell. Options are spot on and video quality is good, not great but that is because Apple Secure HomeKit only supports 1080p. Can’t go wrong with this doorbell, you’ll enjoy the security it provides. Also this has sold out twice since launching a month ago.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFinally a HomeKit compatible doorbell without a subscription at an affordable price!

I have used ring for many years which has worked well on its own but doesn’t link into the rest of my home. I also hate subscriptions on top of an expensive product.

So Aqara. Great brand which is slowly taking over the majority of my smart home. Generally really good value and products.

This product itself looks good and so far has worked seamlessly doing what it should be doing inside of HomeKit. It had a good quality image ect. I am enjoying features I did not have via Ring such as face recognition and being able to live stream on my Apple Watch.

The only negative I have at this stage is the build quality. Although it looks nice it feels rather flimsy. I am worried over time that it won’t stand up to being pressed and also the elements. I would also add that I hand this hardwired using the batteries as a backup. I have seen other reviews with some issues using batteries alone.

If you want a video doorbell capable of 24 hour recording but this.

If you want a video doorbell that works with HomeKit, BUY THIS.

As a final note I would add I am writing this review in the first days of owning the product, so there may be problems I have not come across yet but if it’s anything like the other Aqara products, I don’t anticipate any problem.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe only gripe I have is the outdoor unit doesn’t chime to give visitors an audio queue (as per the description on the manufacturer’s info) that the button push did something.
I might look for a lengthy USB C cable to put the repeater closer to the door.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersWOW, hallelujah, what can I say? Finally, at last, someone has got this right. A home kit product that’s excellent value for money and works straight out of the box. I should have been a doorbell tester with the issues I’ve had. I started with the Netatamo over the last two years, but the reset button has just broken under warranty, and I am hoping for a refund/exchange. Temperamental at the best of times with dropouts and loads of resets, so much so the button has broken. Good quality product but with no Apple HomeKit Secure Video, so not the best for the price now. Next just tried the WEMO, it had great reviews, and it was ordered and sent from America as it’s yet to be available in the U.K. I couldn’t get this to connect, so I sent it straight back. The Aqara Video Doorbell G4 has nearly got this spot on, but it doesn’t quite make the five stars as it’s too big (I understand why they’ve had to make it this size to house the batteries, but still work in progress. ). Also, the side security screw is in a rubbish position if it is up against the frame on the right, as you can’t tighten this backup. Well done, Aqra, for nearly getting there. The product has been working superbly on apple home kit, you just need to make it smaller and move that security screw, and you may have just nailed it with the specs and pricing.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersExcellent video quality, very easy to set up and as it works with both HomeKit and can record to an SD card, it means you don’t need an ongoing subscription unlike other video-doorbells. I choose this over the similar Eufy one as it is compatible with HomeKit secure video, and will be upgraded to support matter. In terms of privacy, all recordings are encrypted before being uploaded to he cloud, so there aren’t the privacy concerns that I had with the Ring or Nest doorbells. The Facial recognition works well, but relies on the data from your Apple Photos app (if using in the Apple ecosystem), so if you don’t have faces labelled in your photos it won’t work with the doorbell. The motion recognition also works well, but if people move past very quickly it will not always wake up in time, but that may be because I have mine battery powered. If it is wired I think it can be more responsive. The motion activation is easy to customise and I have not had any false alerts, and you can also set an activation zone, but I have not tried this. As for the battery life, it is too early to tell. It has dropped to 80% after 2 weeks, but I have been using it a lot more than normal during this time to check it and set it up. Firmware updates automatically install easily and the doorbell rings through my HomePod and through the chime which is fantastic. The night vision is excellent, and although my upstream internet speed is only 1mb/s the live view seems to work well.

My only criticism is that the chime, which acts as the hub, needs to be plugged in which limits where it can be placed. I would have preferred if this had a rechargeable battery so it can be more freely placed.

UPDATE – on high use settings the batteries lasted 4 months. Based on this they could probably last 6 months in less sensitive settings.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’m unable to have a wired doorbell so have been waiting literally years for this battery powered HomeKit doorbell. Although the instructions that come with it are very limited (so check the website for instructions) it works straight out of the box and I encountered no setup problems. Great video and really clear although only 1080P due to HomeKit constraints, faces are very easily recognised. I don’t have great Wi-Fi but have had no connection problems. I have no idea how long the batteries last but will update when they eventually run out and talking of batteries my only gripe is why AA and not a rechargeable battery? I would have paid a little extra for a rechargeable version if one was available. This why I give it 4 stars and not 5. Still overall very pleased so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but rechargeable batteries would have made it 5 stars

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersWe’ll as the only HKSV it is best by default..! However coming from a 1st gen ring doorbell to this I’m mighty impressed.

Setup with the Aqara app was simple and easy to configure with HomeKit.

Camera quality is higher than 1st gen ring, as you would expect, maybe not so wide, and perhaps not so good in the dark. However HomeKit activity zones has meant the sun no longer triggers motion alerts like ring did and facial detection to tell me who is at the door is brilliant too.

I’d wired my ring doorbell in before using a standard doorbell power supply and have reused this with the Aqara G4 doorbell. One thing to note if upgrading from a ring doorbell – the ring doorbell mounting plate is where you connect the power supply to, however with Aqara you wire to the doorbell itself meaning that I had to extend the exisiting wiring using some bell wire and jelly clips; not a big issue but something to be aware of.

Overall I’d recommend this to anyone who uses Apple’s HomeKit and is particularly keen to store recorded video securely in HKSV. The integration is great and when taking into account Ring’s annual fee, the Aqara is cost effective too.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI’ve only had this for a day so far but 1st impressions are very good.
This doorbell has replaced a nest hello which worked fine although a few hoops were jumped through to get the nest in apple home.

This Aqara doorbell works directly via HomeKit & the Aqara app. Linked to Alexa & google it also rings on all my echos, & google speakers.

The 1 main thing that I’m impressed with is that the chimes are instant whereas there’s usually quite a delay with the nest & ring doorbells.

It has HomeKit secure video & can record 24/7, face recognition & you can even record your own clips for the chime.

    Overall really good.

Love having the features of a HomeKit enabled doorbell this can bring to someone who has not been able to as can’t wire one in. This battery option has finally allowed me to have the benefits of options like, iCloud recordings, face recognition that I was missing out on. Updates (already available on day one) will improve this for sure over time, but impressed with day 1 out of the box.
