Trivial Pursuit Family I bought this game for a holiday with our grandchildren. It is compact for travelling and has been a great success. I thought that the girls might not be interested but they love playing the game and we use it when they come to our house! Result!
An Engaging Family Trivia Game with Some Challenges! Having added the Hasbro Gaming Trivial Pursuit Family Edition board game to our collection of family activities, I can confidently say that it has become a staple during our game nights. This quick-play trivia game, designed for players aged 8 and up, offers an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating experience. Although it boasts an extensive range of trivia questions across various categories, there are a few aspects that present challenges, leading me to rate it with 4 stars.
The inclusion of two decks of cards, one for children and another for adults, is a thoughtful approach to cater to players of all ages. With six categories, including Geography, Entertainment, History, Sports and Leisure, Arts and Literature, and Science and Nature, the game covers a wide range of topics, making it educational and entertaining for everyone.
A standout feature of the Trivial Pursuit Family Edition is the sheer number of trivia questions it offers. With 400 cards containing a total of 2,400 questions, each game session is unique and keeps players challenged every time they play. The variety ensures that the game remains engaging, and it encourages players to expand their knowledge across different subject areas.
The Showdown challenge adds an exciting twist to the gameplay, keeping things interesting and competitive. The opportunity to choose an opponent to answer a question and the risk of losing a wedge if they get it wrong adds a strategic element to the game. It enhances the overall experience and keeps players on their toes throughout the game.
However, one aspect that requires improvement is the difficulty level of the children’s questions. I noticed that approximately 80% of the kids’ questions are significantly challenging, to the point where it is unlikely that even adults will answer them correctly, let alone children. This can lead to frustration among younger players, and it takes away from the intended family-friendly nature of the game.
Another drawback that I noticed during gameplay is that a considerable number of questions are American-centric. As an UK based player, I found it a bit disappointing that some questions were heavily focused on American history, sports, and entertainment. It would be more inclusive and enjoyable for a global audience if the questions were more diverse and represented a broader range of cultures and regions.
Despite these challenges, the Trivial Pursuit Family Edition remains a fun and interactive board game suitable for family gatherings and game nights. The option to play in teams or individually allows for flexibility in the number of players, making it accessible for smaller or larger groups. It encourages healthy competition, fosters learning, and sparks lively discussions among players.
In conclusion, the Hasbro Gaming Trivial Pursuit Family Edition board game is a worthwhile addition to any family’s collection of board games. Its quick-play trivia format, diverse categories, and Showdown challenge make it engaging and intellectually stimulating for players of all ages. However, the difficulty level of the children’s questions and the American-centric focus of some questions present challenges that can be improved upon. Nevertheless, this game remains an enjoyable and educational choice for families seeking quality time together through friendly competition and shared learning.
A good mix of questions A lot of people have been saying the questions have an American bias towards them, this put me off buying the game for a while, but haven’t purchased the game have to disagree, i’ve seen plenty of UK based questions which would be confusing for an American audience as well, but there is a good mix of questions.
Overall i would recommend the game to anyone who is a fan of quizzing and trivia games but the price is slightly too high, it should be 12-15 maximum
Good modern family updated game This family edition of Trivial Pursuit is ideal to play with children, it comes complete with 2 sets of child questions and a further 2 sets of adult questions — so it’ll take a long time before you repeat any questions. The board is a simpler design than the original Trivial Pursuit versions, with slightly different rules and you can win a wedge on most places — but we still play it by only trying to win a wedge on the 6 traditional zones. We’ve played it many times over Christmas and all enjoyed it, the question difficulty appears to be pitched just right for children between 8 and 12.
Lack of question card holders is unforgivable The questions aren’t too hard or too easy for the most part. They follow the original Genus edition categories, and are content appropriate for the UK.
But because of penny pinching they don’t include any card holders for passing the question cards round the table, which makes gameplay much more awkward.
The board is also quite plain, not decorated like the old Genus edition. I know this is a style thing, but it just comes off looking a bit cheap.
Brilliant fun for everyone! My kids have learnt so much since we started playing this game. They’re aged between 8 and 14 and there are suitable questions for everyone. Wish it came with more question cards though as once you’ve gone through them the game is almost unplayable. Or sell extra question cards!
Great Family Game Brought this game for my Granddaughter’s birthday. It’s a fabulous game with two sets of question cards, one for adults and one for children. We have played and played this game and never get bored of it, we all love it. Definitely would recommend this game.
Perfec Such a great game, I have an 11yr old and a 12yr old and this game is brilliant. Games days/nights are always a regular occurrence in our house and this is another favourite. Fantastic quick delivery too, thank you.
Perfect family game We have an older version so was disappointed at the lack of spaces on the board but the questions are easier and the games are shorter. The children like challenging each other and the wild wedge option.
Well packaged and arrived quickly.
Fun family game This is a game for the whole family. Kids questions can be answered by by 8 -12 year olds. I would say the adult questions are a bit too easy, much easier than standard edition questions.
Brilliant game Fantastic game, my 6 year old loves it. It has kids questions and adults questions so the whole family can play. It’s as fun for the adults as it is for the kids.
Smart, challenging, dynamic learning game Love playing with my children and even I am learning a lot. It is a sophisticated and intelligent game that motivate children to learn, to know. Except it is a UK edition with very UK questions, which I know nothing about and some I don’t think has any value to learn. My friends have the US edition that seems more familiar as we are more exposed to American culture
A decent family game with younger kids Bought this for our 13 year old for Christmas as he enjoys taking on the parents. I guess it is hard to get the balance right when writing questions for kids. The kids questions are not challenging enough for him, but the adults ones are too hard. However, we still enjoy the game and he enjoys beating us smashing through the kids cards!!
Classic game updated A great update of the original Trivial Pursuit. Fantastic to be able to play with adults and children together.
We played with a 7, 9 and 10 year old on one team, and the grown-ups on the other. It was great fun and the kids were thrilled to win! Also the game board has reduced the spaces between cheeses so the game progresses more quickly, which is helpful for young attention spans.
Good editio I have kids aged 9 and 11, and adults aged much more than that who have spent a lifetime playing TP. We’ve got 2 or 3 other versions but the questions are now getting a bit old. This set works well, with two sets of questions that balance adults and kids chances effectively, and are reasonably current (2017, I think). If younger kids are struggling then get a set of Harry Potter question cards to use instead and they’ll be away. One star off for not having enough question cards (200 each of adult and youth – a bit stingy) and because they’ve messed with the dynamics of the board layout unnecessarily.
Great family game - especially in lockdow Nice to play and learn. It would be good to have more question packs available. Also some of the language in the questions is incorrect – For example the use of which and what is often confused – so that could be improved. Perhaps the cards could also be a little larger allowing for a slight increase in the size of print too.
Great family game Great game although it was missing some parts from the manufacturing process, sent for a replacement. Great family game to play for adults and children together. Great while self isolating to get your brains working
Probably an Excellent choice if it was not damaged. Thank you for promptly sending my parcel. Excellent. But the box is not suitable for a Birthday present!!! I have only noticed it today. Not very happy at all as it’s too late to send back now I have to buy something else.
Good family game I don’t know why this wasn’t done before now, its such a brilliant idea and I love the new part of the game where if you land on a showdown square you can get the chance to steal an other players wedge. makes the game a lot more interesting.
however I found the adults questions easy to just right and the kids questions quite hard. some of them the other adults playing didn’t know and we like quizzes. played with 3 different generations and it proved to be good fun.
Great game Played this on Christmas Day – thoroughly enjoyable- a great mix of difficulty (we only used the adult questions) would have been playing all night if we had followed the rules exactly where they say you have to throw the exact number to finish. We changed it to once you have all the wedges, you can throw again if you answer correctly- this give a point to actually answering if you don’t need any more wedges and just want to land back on the centre to win the game which in itself can take ages! Looking forward to playing again.
Fab game, lots of fun! Fab game for the family. Kids questions are really good – examples topics are social media stars, and school topics eg Vikings or Roman’s, and includes some multiple choice.
Have played with all my children, either one-on-one or altogether. Their ages are 17 (played with the adult cards), 14 (chose two categories to play adult cards from and four categories for kids) and 12 and 11 who both played the kids cards (and win quite a lot!)
Only issue is that we have played so many games (about 3 a night) since we bought it a week ago, that we are seeing some repeated questions nearly every time so have had to use the second deck of cards for both adult and children already. I thought it might have taken a bit longer to get through one deck.
This was a bargain when it was reduced to 20. Glad I didnt pay more, though!
Still good fu We’ve got the original “Genus” edition from way back, so it was nice to get a fresh set of questions. Unlike some other reviews, we don’t agree that it’s been dumbed down but has a good range of questions for all the family so that teenagers as well as adults can enjoy it equally. And that is the point – it’s a family game, not one that’s loaded in favour of more experienced adults who will always win.
It could certainly do with more questions though – there are only 400 cards, so that’s 2400 questions in total. We’ve played it quite a few times and the same questions are now starting to come up again, especially as you can easily get through around half of them in a game with 4 people playing.
Another missed opportunity is the lack of card holders – there are 4 piles of questions which can’t be held very securely in the box, so if you put it on its side when storing away, be prepared for a bit of a mess when you open it again! Elastic bands will solve the problem though. But it would have been nice to have something to put them in while playing, instead of passing piles of loose cards around.
The board itself is very plain. The original had nice illustrations in each space covering all the categories but this new version just has plain, solid colours, which is pretty boring in comparison.
Nevertheless, the game is still good fun and I think you’ll enjoy it if you’re a fan of the original.
