Merrell Men's Moab 2 GTX Walking Shoe

Merrell Men's Moab 2 GTX Walking Shoe

Shoe sizes are not standardized. Every shoe manufacturer uses different measurements in terms of instep height, toe shape and foot width. However, the basis for your own shoe size is always the length of your feet. Thus, you should always determine your foot length before buying in order to choose the right shoe.

I did not want to purchase a product made with leather and, although these shoes are not advertised as being vegan, they appear to be manufactured using synthetic materials. They are a perfect fit, lightweight and very comfortable. I have walked through long wet grass in them and they are completely waterproof. Very pleased with my purchase which was delivered promptly and packaged as requested.
My second pair of Merrell walking shoes, but my 1st pair with Goretex. Overall, I like the style, quality & fit. I chose to go up a half size from my usual size 8 & they fit perfectly. The only caveat is that with the Goretex lining they are too warm for me in hot weather. Definetly more suitable for colder conditions.
I’ve been wearing these Moab 2 GTX shoes frequently for six months and they’re still in excellent condition including the soles. No problem at all with waterproofing, at least in an urban environment. I got caught out walking today without rain gear in a heavy downpour. My clothing was drenched, I was soaked to the skin, but my feet stayed dry.
There is one drawback. I bought these shoes hoping they’d be like my previous Merrell’s which looked very similar in photos. My old shoes were light and really comfortable. The soles on this shoe are twice as thick and quite heavy, so they feel a bit clunky. Even so, no regrets in purchasing them. They have good arch support and they’re good value for 70.
Been buying a pair of these each year for about five years now. I wear them everyday till they start leaking. Great shoes and waterproof in all weather. The slippy laces are a minor irritant but just require a double bow.
Seems better made than my previous pair. Quite cool to wear. The fit is really good and supportive. I’ve done a few 4mile walks in them and no rubbing. Soles are curved slightly towards the toe, not noticeable in a bad way. Seem to have better lacing than my previous pair. I’d recommend these over cheaper Merrells.
I bought these to replace an old pair that I have had for 3 years; if they are as good as the old ones, I will be happy.
They are totally waterproof, comfortable and the Vibram soles are extremely hard wearing; I estimate that I have walked well over 5000 miles, over all types of surface, in the old ones, and it is the uppers that have finally started to split.
Great value for the price.
Other difference with these Vibram soles they are much harder and a different pattern. 4 weeks on, perhaps done 30 miles they do feel hard and quite loud on tarmac etc like a work boot clunking away. Feet were raw after a 7 mile walk, had to wear other shoes for a few days. Heard GTX 3 are even harder soles.
For me these run small, I’m a 10 and a 10.5 fits perfect (with normal socks).
I think the underfoot cushioning could be improved, feels good until you walk on the pavement then it feels a bit hard. I’ve replaced the inner soles with better cushioning ones.
They seemed to grip well on wet surfaces but have not come down a mountain side with wet rock underfoot.
Waterproofing wise they coped walking through small streams on the beach but obviously would need more exposure to comment on their true effectiveness.
I could have given them 3 stars but with even with their short comings i actually like them (and they look good) so 4 stars it is.
Since the next size arrived I’ve worn them nearly every day and used them on a week away and haven’t had any issues with them, in fact they felt like a pair of shoes I’d been wearing for a lot longer and didn’t require any wearing in. I tend to be very picky with shoes and often have problems with heel blisters when I get new ones.
The only issue I did find, but more of an annoyance rather than an issue was a slight noise they make when walking, almost like a slight “crumpling paper” noise. This appears to come from the insole but I tend to swap these out so I’m not that concerned. Overall I’m really happy with this purchase and may well consider getting another pair in another colour.
Size wise, I know this fits me, as I tried it on in a shop on the high street. I have a broader foot, so Merrell’s have always suited me in this area too.
It sounds silly, bit unfortunately, sizing really only is a guide today, as depending on the manufacturer, I take shoes sized from 10 – 12, so, don’t make assumptions, unless you specifically know the manufacturer and model of shoe you are purchasing.
I purchased these for a recent trip to Iceland, and together with some reasonably thick woollen socks, they were perfect, with the added knowledge that should it rain or snow, the Gore-Tex lining would keep my feet dry. The Gore-Tex wasn’t put to the test on this occasion, so that will have to wait for another time on these particular pair of shoes.
As with all ‘big name’ manufacturers these days, one always has to stay alert. Long time fans and die hard users of many well known and often expensive brands are reporting the same thing – deteriorating quality and longevity ! (This usually, but not always, coincidences with a change of manufacturing facility/process or country that goes hand in hand with the deteriorating product?)
I tend to purchase several pairs of Merrell’s each few years, one pair for more better, casual going out (which lasts me for many years), one pair for the regular walking, every day out and about I do, and believe me, I live in them and wear them to the maximum.
(I believe if buying a quality pair of shoes, they should be lasting more than 12 months !)
I basically then tend to wear them until they get relegated to garden duties, then the bin.
Having experienced both the non Gore-Tex and Gore-Tex version’s over the years, I now just stick to the Gore-Tex versions, as it doesn’t take much of a shower or very long in some wet grass, for the non Gore-Tex versions to soak through, but that’s just my preference and opinion.
Until my experience says differently, I am sticking with Merrell’s.
I hope this review has been of some help?
